Abstract:

Abstract:

"A Heretic in the Schoenberg Circle: Roberto Gerhard's First Engagement with Twelve-Tone Procedures in Andantino." Twentieth-Century Music 16, no. 3 (August 15, 2019): 557–88. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s1478572219000306.

Abstract:
AbstractShortly before finishing his studies with Arnold Schoenberg, Roberto Gerhard composed Andantino, a short piece in which he used for the first time a compositional technique for the systematic circulation of all pitch classes in both the melodic and the harmonic dimensions of the music. He modelled this technique on the tri-tetrachordal procedure in Schoenberg's Prelude from the Suite for Piano, Op. 25 but, unlike his teacher, Gerhard treated the tetrachords as internally unordered pitch-class collections. This decision was possibly encouraged by his exposure from the mid-1920s onwards to Josef Matthias Hauer's writings on ‘trope theory’. Although rarely discussed by scholars, Andantino occupies a special place in Gerhard's creative output for being his first attempt at ‘twelve-tone composition’ and foreshadowing the permutation techniques that would become a distinctive feature of his later serial compositions. This article analyses Andantino within the context of the early history of twelve-tone music and theory.

Abstract:
These observations form a long-delayed epilogue to my article ‘Soirées de Barcelone: a Preliminary Report’ in Tempo 139 (December 1981), where I outlined the history of Roberto Gerhard's Catalan ballet, a major score which was then (and remains now) virtually unknown save for the performance of some excerpts. For the work's conception, and its commission from Colonel de Basil's Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, readers should consult that article, and the article by Julian White in the present issue. This was the work-in-progress – apparently still at that stage bearing its original title Les Feux de la Saint Jean – which Gerhard took with him when the climax of the Spanish Civil War and the fall of the Republic forced him into exile in France in January 1939. He continued to work on it during the following five months he spent in Paris and Meudon.

Abstract:
In January 1827, a serbian poem enters into the conversation between johann wolfgang von goethe and his faithful scribe, johann peter eckermann, who writes, “Mit diesen Worten reichte er mir eine Übersetzung eines serbischen Gedichtes von Herrn Gerhard. . . . Das Gedicht führte den Titel ‘Die Gefängnisschlüssel‘” (“[With these words he] handed to me a translation by Herr Gerhard of a Serbian poem. . . . It was entitled The Prison-Key”; Eckermann 195; Goethe 131). The following week, the two men's conversation returns to the Serbian poem; in the published record of their discussion, the poem is mentioned in the same passage that contains the first appearance in print of the term Weltliteratur (“world literature” [Eckermann 198; Goethe 133]). The original poem on which the translation is based has curiously remained unnamed in Gespräche mit Goethe (Conversations with Goethe)—and it has not yet been named in the large body of Goethe scholarship until now. In the edited volume of Gespräche, one finds a note appended to Eckermann's reference to “Die Gefängnisschlüssel” (“Prison Key”). It clarifies that the title of the German translation of the unnamed original Serbian poem is not “Die Gefängnisschlüssel,” as Eckermann recorded it, but “Die Kerkerschlüssel” (“Dungeon Key” [734]). The latter appears in Gerhard's Wila: Serbische Volkslieder und Heldenmährchen (Vila: Serbian Folk Songs and Heroic Tales), published in 1828. The recovered title of the original Serbian poem is ( “The Wedding of Radul Vlašć”). While world-literary approaches to Gespräche have largely focused on the unnamed Chinese novel that, like the Serbian poem, appears in the same passage in Gespräche as Weltliteratur, this introduction traces how the Orientalist production of the phrase Weltliteratur takes two forms: one in reference to the Chinese novel, the other in reference to the Serbian poem.

Abstract:
Sport is just not cricket any more. Seems like just yesterday the only way weJohannesburg folk could follow a nail-biting international rugby test happening atNewlands in Cape Town was by listening to Gerhard Viviers' commentary on Afrikaansradio. I remember my grandfather sitting on the stoep, a map of the playing fielddrawn on a large sheet of paper on his lap, plotting team moves, attacks, defences andscores, as Gerhard's staccato commentary poured through the speakers of an old Grundigmedium wave receiver next to him; definitely a case of what Marshall Mcluhan wouldcall 'a very cool medium'.In the days before mass media, the sports message sent to those absent from theaction on the field contained little else of fact other than a score, and a winner, andthe message reached the receiver a day, a week or a month later. Messages then graduallyexpanded to include match details and perhaps a grainy photograph or two as newspapersstarted reporting on sport. Radio revolutionised sport in that it provided the impetusfor the massification of sport as teams and individuals developed followings, and theconcept of 'the fan' was born. Radio truly took sports matches beyond the stadiumgates for the first time.

Abstract:
This article investigates whether Johann Gerhard taught theologia regenitorum. First it interprets what Gerhard means by the term theologia. Then it investigates what role philosophy plays in his theological thinking. At last is considered the Inner witness of the Holy Spirit. These three perspectives combined reveals that Gerhard fits into a definition of theologia regenitorum.
