Abstract:
Migration has remained a constant element of 21st-century changes (Appadurai, 1999; Gillespie, 2000; Georgiou, 2001). The prospects of a continuation are certain with growing gains in technologies of communication, transportation, and the increasing ease with which the world can integrate and function. The place of Nigerian migrants as reflected in some patterns and particularities (Georgiou, 2001; Adeniyi, 2008) of its elites reveals key characteristics useful for the understanding of discourses around migrants’ return and reverse culture shock (Naficy, 1999). While the coming home is often imagined, a few have proceeded to actualizations, and subsequently opening up new pedestals for the understanding of travelling and dwelling (Morley, 2000). This paper attempts a critical analysis of identifiable features and concludes that the revelations will ceaselessly grow in substance. The paper uses critical discourse analysis to evaluate the experiences of some elites, as rendered in formal and informal interviews, while also spicing it up with secondary data, obtained from media reports, and related literature. It eventually ended with a recommendation on the need for concerted development efforts to enable a realization of the likely higher quality lifestyle, which the elite might have left behind in the West.

Abstract:
Aggregations abound in nature, from cell formations to locust swarms. One method of modelling these aggregations is the non-local aggregation equation with the addition of degenerate diffusion. In this article we develop a finite volume based numerical scheme for this style of equation and perform an error, computation time, and convergence analysis. In addition we investigate two methods for approximating the non-local component. References A. J. Bernoff and C. M. Topaz. Nonlocal aggregation models: A primer of swarm equilibria. Abstract:
The Meletis-Georgiou is a patented Vane Rotary Engine concept that incorporates separate compression-expansion chambers and a modified Otto (or Miller) cycle, characterized by (Exhaust) Gas Recirculation at elevated pressures. This is implemented by transferring part of the expansion chamber volume into the compression one through the coordinated action of two vane diaphragms. This results into a very high gas temperature at the end of the compression, something that permits autoignition under all conditions for a Homogeneous Compression Ignition (HCCI) version of the engine. The relevant parametric analysis of the ideal cycle shows that the new cycle gives ideal thermal efficiencies of the order of 60% to 70% under conditions corresponding to homogeneous compression engines but at reduced pressures when compared against the corresponding Miller cycle.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT The recently discovered RraA protein acts as an inhibitor of the essential endoribonuclease RNase E, and we demonstrated that ectopic expression of RraA affects the abundance of more than 700 transcripts in Escherichia coli (K. Lee, X. Zhan, J. Gao, J. Qiu, Y. Feng, R. Meganathan, S. N. Cohen, and G. Georgiou, Cell 114:623-634, 2003). We show that rraA is expressed from its own promoter, P rraA , located in the menA-rraA intergenic region. Primer extension and lacZ fusion analysis revealed that transcription from P rraA is elevated upon entry into stationary phase in a σs-dependent manner. In addition, the stability of the rraA transcript is dependent on RNase E activity, suggesting the involvement of a feedback circuit in the regulation of the RraA level in E. coli.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper explores discursive narratives as inextricably linked to the construction of identity, place and history by a number of interviewed individuals. From an interactional sociolinguistics (cf.De Fina & Georgakopoulou, 2012) perspective, the study explores the context of the East African diaspora (Georgiou, 2006;Manger & Assal, 2006among many others) as the interviewed participants are all Zanzibar-born individuals for whom the relationship with the island and its history is crucial to their construction of selfhood. The study analyses the narrative voices (De Fina & Georgakopolou, 2008) of those individuals who decided to leave Zanzibar at the time of the 1964 violent political upheaval never to return and those who, on the contrary, decided to go back after a lengthy period abroad. However, more than establishing a division between these two groups, the paper highlights how these individuals take a different positioning (Bamberg, 1997) towards Zanzibar and its history and construct a range of identities in the context of the interview.

Leta 2001 je izšel zbornik Media and Migration: Constructions of Mobility and Difference, v katerem je bilo področje raziskovanja medijev in migracij verjetno prvič deležno sistematične in celovite obravnave. Skoraj dvajset let po izidu omenjenega zbornika je izšel njegov obsežen naslednik The SAGE Handbook of Media and Migration (2020), v katerem je teoretska in empirična kompleksnost sodobnih medijskih in migracijskih študijev tematizirana v štiriinpetdesetih poglavjih več kot šestdesetih avtorjev in avtoric. Če je obdobje izida prvega zbornika zaznamovala prevlada množičnih medijev, pa drugi zbornik naslavlja radikalno drugačno medijsko krajino. Določa jo digitalni spletni kontekst, ki ni samo preoblikoval tradicionalnih množičnih medijev, ampak tudi prispeval k uveljavitvi družbenih medijev in novih medijskih tehnologij. Sodobni mediji so digitalni mediji, ki ne vplivajo le na medijsko konstrukcijo migracij in njihovo osebno doživljanje, ampak področje medijskih in migracijskih študijev postavljajo pred številne teoretske, epistemološke in metodološke izzive.

Abstract:
The article is dedicated to the influence of valide sultans on their sons and rulers of the Ottoman Empire, bearing in mind the importance of their positions. Valide sultan was the title held by the ?legal mother? of a ruling Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. This title was held by the living mother of a reigning sultan. But if mothers died before their sons? accession to the throne, they were never bestowed with the title of valide sultan. Valide sultan was perhaps the most important position in the Ottoman Empire after the sultan himself. According to the Muslim tradition, saying that Mother?s right is God?s right, as mother to the sultan, the valide sultan had a significant influence on the affairs of the empire. One of the illustrations of her great power in the court was the fact that her own rooms were always adjacent to her son?s. We were especially focused on the reign of sultan Mahmud II and his life story full of different suspicion, including the clime of the honorable monk from the Atos, elder hadzi Georgiou, that Mahmud II was a crypto Christian.

Abstract:
Finite topological spaces and their dimensions have many applications in computer science, e.g., in digital topology, computer graphics and the analysis and synthesis of digital images. Georgiou et. al. [11] provided a polynomial algorithm for computing the covering dimension dim(X; 𝒯) of a finite topological space (X; 𝒯). In addition, they asked whether algorithms of the same complexity for computing the small inductive dimension ind(X; 𝒯) and the large inductive dimension Ind(X; 𝒯) can be developed. The first problem was solved in a previous paper [4]. Using results of the that paper, we also solve the second problem in this paper. We present a polynomial algorithm for Ind(X; 𝒯), so that there are now efficient algorithms for the three most important notions of a dimension in topology. Our solution reduces the computation of Ind(X; 𝒯), where the specialisation pre-order of (X; 𝒯) is taken as input, to the computation of the maximal height of a specific class of directed binary trees within the partially ordered set. For the latter an efficient algorithm is presented that is based on order- and graph-theoretic ideas. Also refinements and variants of the algorithm are discussed.

Abstract:
Karunanithi, Shanker, John Georgiou, Milton P. Charlton, and Harold L. Atwood. Imaging of calcium in Drosophila larval motor nerve terminals. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 3465–3467, 1997. Calcium measurements in the presynaptic terminal are essential in the investigation of mechanisms underlying neurotransmitter release. To enhance the genetic analysis of secretory mechanisms, we have developed Ca2+ imaging techniques for Drosophila larval motor nerve terminals. We studied Ca2+ signals in “big” (type Ib) and “small” (type Is) boutons that innervate ventral longitudinal muscles 6 and 7 in each abdominal segment of Canton-S (CS)-strain 3rd instar larvae. The indicator fluo-3 in conjunction with confocal microscopy was used to detect stimulus-dependent changes in [Ca2+]i. The Ca2+ signals were reliable and reproducible, and the resting fluorescence remained constant throughout the experiments. The Ca2+ signals increased with stimulus frequency from 5 to 20 Hz for both bouton types. No significant differences in the Ca2+ signals were seen between the two bouton types at 5 and 20 Hz, but there was a difference at 10 Hz. The decay of the Ca2+ signal was more prolonged after 20-Hz stimulation than after 5 and 10 Hz. At the single-synapse level, the secretory efficacy of Is synapses is greater than that of Ib synapses, but our data show that factors other than differences in Ca2+ entry may govern the strength of synaptic transmission.

Abstract:
Abstract Brain metastasis (BrM) is the most common form of brain cancer, characterized by neurologic disability and an abysmal prognosis. Unfortunately, our understanding of the biology underlying human BrMs remains rudimentary. Here, we present an integrative analysis of >100,000 malignant and non-malignant cells from 15 human parenchymal BrMs, generated by single-cell transcriptomics, mass cytometry, and complemented with mouse model- and in silico approaches. Specific single-cell interrogation of metastatic tumor cells provides a framework of 8 functional cell programs that coexist or anticorrelate. Collectively, these programs delineate two functional BrM archetypes, that co-exist within each metastatic tumor, one proliferative and the other inflammatory, that are evidently shaped through tumor-immune interactions. Our study provides a foundation to understand the molecular basis of BrM in patients with tumor cell-intrinsic and host environmental traits. For more details please refer to the original study: H. Abstract:
The Civil War in GeorgiaOn 9 April 1991, the Republic of Georgia proclaimed its independence from the Soviet Union. Sviat Gamsakhurdia, an anti-communist leader of the Georgian Nationalist movement, was elected President by an overwhelming majority. Soon after the election, however, Gamsakhurdia's popularity began to plummet. He was accused of suppressing any opposition, and he and his supporters accused the opposition of being in league with Moscow and seeking to sabotage Georgian independence. Demonstrators in Tbilisi, the capital city, demanded the resignation of the new government, and the government relied increasingly upon armed forces to maintain power.

Abstract:
Abstract T-310 is an important Cold War cipher. The cipher is extremely complex and it outputs extremely few bits from the internal state. A recent paper [Courtois, N. T.: Decryption oracle slide attacks on T-310, Cryptologia, 42 (2018), no. 3, 191–204] shows an example of a highly anomalous key such that T-310 can be broken by a slide attack with a decryption oracle. In this paper, we show that the same attacks are ALSO possible for regular keys which satisfy all the official KT1 requirements. Two other recent papers [Courtois, N. T.—Georgiou, M.—Scarlata, M.: Slide attacks and LC-weak keys in T-310, Cryptologia 43 (2019), no. 3, 175–189]; [Courtois, N. T.—Oprisanu, M. B.—Schmeh, K.: Linear cryptanalysis and block cipher design in East Germany in the 1970s, Cryptologia (published online), December 5, 2018] show that some of the KT1 keys are very weak w.r.t. Linear Cryptanalysis. In this paper, we show that a vast number of such weak keys exist and study the exact pre-conditions which make them weak. In addition we introduce a new third class of weak keys for RKDC (Related-Key Differential Cryptanalysis). We show that the original designers in the 1970s have ensured that these RKDC properties cannot happen for 4 rounds. We have discovered that these properties can happen for as few as 5 rounds for some keys, and for 10 to 16 rounds they become hard to avoid. The main reason why we study weak keys is to show that none of these properties occur by accident, rather that they are governed by precise pre-conditions which guarantee their existence, and countless other keys with the same properties exist. Eventually, this is how interesting attacks can be found.

Abstract:
SummaryObjectives: To assess the impact of introducing a new Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System (RIS) on: (i) Medical Imaging work processes; and (ii) turnaround times (TATs) for x-ray and CT scan orders initiated in the Emergency Department (ED).Methods: We employed a mixed method study design comprising: (i) semi-structured interviews with Medical Imaging Department staff; and (ii) retrospectively extracted ED data before (March/ April 2010) and after (March/April 2011 and 2012) the introduction of a new PACS/RIS. TATs were calculated as: processing TAT (median time from image ordering to examination) and reporting TAT (median time from examination to final report). Results: Reporting TAT for x-rays decreased significantly after introduction of the new PACS/RIS; from a median of 76 hours to 38 hours per order (p<.0001) for patients discharged from the ED, and from 84 hours to 35 hours (p<.0001) for patients admitted to hospital. Medical Imaging staff reported that the changeover to the new PACS/RIS led to gains in efficiency, particularly regarding the accessibility of images and patient-related information. Nevertheless, assimilation of the new PACS/RIS with existing Departmental work processes was considered inadequate and in some instances unsafe. Issues highlighted related to the synchronization of work tasks (e.g., porter arrangements) and the material set up of the work place (e.g., the number and location of computers). Conclusions: The introduction of new health IT can be a “double-edged sword” providing improved efficiency but at the same time introducing potential hazards affecting the effectiveness of the Medical Imaging Department.Citation: Georgiou A, Prgomet M, Lymer S, Hordern A, Ridley4 L, Westbrook J.The impact of a health IT changeover on Medical Imaging Department work processes and turnaround times: a mixed method study. Abstract:
Beginning from Plato, there exists a philosophical tradition, which interprets philosophy as preparation for death. However, for Plato the death of a philosopher does not necessarily imply death in its ordinary meaning, but rather a spiritual way of life maximally free from corporeal affections. This kind of relationship between philosophy and death was intensively discussed in late antique philosophy, Patristics, medieval Byzantine philosophy, and also in medieval Georgian literature. Based on Plato’s and Plotinus’ philosophy, Porphyry presented definitions of three kinds of death in his Sententiae (8; 9; 23): (1) ‘death’ of a philosopher, (2) natural death, (3) ‘death’ of a soul. The aim of this paper is to provide a philosophical analysis of three concepts of death in the post-Porphyrian tradition, mainly in Byzantine and Georgian texts. The paper is based on the analysis of the above mentioned issues in the texts of Porphyry (also of Plotinus, as of his predecessor), Macrobius, Michael Psellos, as well as in the old Georgian versions of the works of Ammonios Hermiae, John of Damascus and John Sinaites. We also take into consideration the views on the relation between philosophy and death in the thought of the philosophers of Humanism and Renaissance, such as Georgios Gemistos Plethon, Marsilio Ficino, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, and Michel de Montaigne, whether or not and to what extent their views on the relation between philosophy and death are different from the theories of ancient and medieval Platonists.

Abstract:
SummaryIntroduction: Electronic medication administration record (eMAR) systems are promoted as a potential intervention to enhance medication safety in residential aged care facilities (RACFs). The purpose of this study was to conduct an in-practice evaluation of an eMAR being piloted in one Australian RACF before its roll out, and to provide recommendations for system improvements. Methods: A multidisciplinary team conducted direct observations of workflow (n=34 hours) in the RACF site and the community pharmacy. Semi-structured interviews (n=5) with RACF staff and the community pharmacist were conducted to investigate their views of the eMAR system. Data were analysed using a grounded theory approach to identify challenges associated with the design of the eMAR system. Results: The current eMAR system does not offer an end-to-end solution for medication management. Many steps, including prescribing by doctors and communication with the community pharmacist, are still performed manually using paper charts and fax machines. Five major challenges associated with the design of eMAR system were identified: limited interactivity; inadequate flexibility; problems related to information layout and semantics; the lack of relevant decision support; and system maintenance issues. We suggest recommendations to improve the design of the eMAR system and to optimize existing workflows.Discussion: Immediate value can be achieved by improving the system interactivity, reducing inconsistencies in data entry design and offering dedicated organisational support to minimise connectivity issues. Longer-term benefits can be achieved by adding decision support features and establishing system interoperability requirements with stakeholder groups (e.g. community pharmacies) prior to system roll out. In-practice evaluations of technologies like eMAR system have great value in identifying design weaknesses which inhibit optimal system use.Citation: Tariq A, Lehnbom E, Oliver K, Georgiou A, Rowe C, Osmond T, Westbrook J. Abstract:
Abstract Angiogenesis inhibition has become a mainstay of oncology despite having fallen short of its early promise. As originally envisioned, angiogenesis inhibition would cut off the blood supply, deprive tumor cells of key nutrients, leading to their demise. In practice, while there is evidence that tumors under angiogenesis treatment do in fact exhibit some degree of metabolic stress, this is stress is not sufficient to induce significant cancer cell death. We posit that the full potential of angiogenesis inhibition can be realized by the combination of angiogenesis inhibition with emerging tumor metabolism targeting therapies. Because tumors under angiogenesis inhibition are already in a state of nutrient stress, the effects of metabolically targeted therapies such as amino acid depletion (e.g. asparginase, methionine restriction), inhibitors of stress adaption (AMPK and GCN2 inhibitors) or energy metabolism (e.g. IACS-010759, Metformin, POMHEX) stand to dramatically increase in potency whilst remaining selective for (angiogenic) tumor versus (non-angiogenic) normal tissue. Here, we provide proof-of-principal for this thesis. First, we performed metabolomic profiling of angiogenesis-inhibited tumors, which corroborates a state of nutrient stress in angiogenesis-inhibited tumors. Second, we demonstrate dramatic anti-neoplastic synergy (effectively curing of xenografted tumor-bearing mice, irrespective of initial tumor size), without enhanced adverse toxicities, between the anti-VEGFA antibody Avastin and enolase inhibitor HEX. The same results were recapitulated with the VEGFR inhibitor Tivozanib and HEX and the enolase inhibitor could be substituted with the Oxphos inhibitor IACS-010759, with similar effects. The synergy was observed in a broad range of tumor types, even those without clear genetic susceptibilities. Together, these results suggest that angiogenesis inhibitors synergize broadly with cancer therapies targeting metabolism, allowing the realization of the full potential of these previously disappointing drugs. Our results warrant systematic combination clinical trials between angiogenesis inhibitors and established, as well as emerging anti-metabolic cancer therapies. Abstract:
In a reading of Gryphius’ Catharina von Georgien within its political and confessional context of Silesia at the end of the Thirty Years’ War, this article analyzes the transformation of the Christian martyr cult within early modern German tragedy. It argues that Gryphius used the hagiographic type of the royal martyr as a moral example and figure of governmental order. He depicted the pious Georgian martyr Queen Catharina and her devout officials as an inspiring community of civic virtue to be imitated by his fellow Silesians. This patriotic injunction of the tragedy resonates with legal concepts of public law put forward by Gryphius’ mentor, Georg Schönborner and others. The article finds that Gryphius’ martyr tragedy must be read as an aesthetic contribution to some of the legal movements decisive for German state formation around 1650.
