Abstract:
Mainly a historical novel, the quiet gentleman is also, to some extent, a detective story. The writer has attempted (successfully it seems) a historical reconstruction of the landed gentry's daily life at the time of the regency. The detective story which remains enclosed in the st erth family is to be analysed in judicial rather than in police terms although magistrates are as totally absent as detectives in the novel. The earl of st erth (an imaginary character) is dressed and behaves as a dandy, but his dandyism is mere pretence if the readers refers to historical dandies or to dandies portrayed in novels published between 1820 and 1830. In certain aspects, the novel is also a feminist novel as we see miss morville, the heroine, assert her personality and her spirit of decision throughout the story, whereas her power progressively extends on the other characters. Even if the fiction ends with the amouncement of st erth and miss morville's wedding, the prevailling atmosphere of the novel cannot be qualified as euphoric, on the contrary. Fall, confinement and single combat are the major figures. The influence of jane austen is clearly visible in numerous episodes, the reader finds in miss morville features which belong to elinor the heroine of sense and sensibility: points of comparison are also possible with northanger abbey. The study includes a chapter on the values carried by the novel and a chapter on the writer's style and language, a special interest being attached to the slang of the regency period

Smith, Paul John. "Georgeite : a rare gem for catalysis." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2015. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/78550/.

Full text
Abstract:
The industrial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 heterogeneous catalyst has been in commercialisation for more than 50 years, whilst ambiguity still remains regarding its synthesis procedure. This involves a multi-step process, whereby each of these steps contributes to the resulting microstructural features of the final state catalyst. The initial step involves preparation of a crystalline hydroxycarbonate by aqueous co-precipitation using metal nitrates and sodium carbonate. This is a highly sensitive technique, whereby the retention of residual nitrates and alkali metals is highly influential on the resulting catalyst activity. These impurities are poisons and inhibit the full potential of such catalysts from being exploited. Furthermore, the manufacture of these catalyst materials requires renewed research and investment in order to be more compliant with green chemistry. The widespread utilisation of nitrate salts is primarily attributed to their low cost and significant solubility in aqueous media. However, production of nitrate waste streams places a pronounced burden and strain on our environment and has resulted in government legislation. In many studies, the mineral malachite has been identified as the optimum hydroxycarbonate phase for the role of catalyst precursor. However, whilst fine-tuning of the precipitation route has taken place over the years regarding its optimization, it has in essence remained largely unchanged during this timeframe. Consequently, the work presented in this thesis focuses on identifying, understanding and improving sustainable synthesis routes for the preparation of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts that are devoid of nitrate and alkali-metal reagents. Two preparation routes using precipitation techniques for the production of hydroxycarbonates is reported which fulfil these requirements. This involves using supercritical CO2 as an anti-solvent precipitant, as well as utilising a modified co-precipitation methodology based on the current industrial procedure. Moreover, efforts have specifically focused on the preparation of the amorphous hydroxycarbonate termed georgeite. Thus the work neglects the large volume of literature reporting malachite as the optimum catalyst precursor. The ability to readily manufacture what was previously known to be a rare mineralogical phase could potentially open up additional applications. A series of Cu, Zn and Al containing georgeite precursor materials were produced from metal acetate salts using the semi-continuous supercritical CO2 anti-solvent (SAS) process. The addition of water to the system was found to result in a phase transformation of the resulting precipitate from a disordered mixed metal acetate to the georgeite phase. The physicochemical properties of the precipitant are also highly sensitive to the content of water used, whereby a compromise must be struck between enhancing the content of georgeite produced in the resulting precipitate and maintaining an optimum homogeneous system to operate in. Despite georgeite being a meta-stable phase, it is shown to be readily made. It is capable of incorporating both zinc and aluminium into its phase, which enhances the thermal stability of the material. This can be achieved without the production of additional by-phases, which currently implies no limit to the degree of zinc and aluminium incorporation. The choice of aluminium reagent has been investigated, whereby the aluminium acetylacetonate salt and an aluminium boehmite sol have been identified as suitable reagents. Alternatively, georgeite precursors can be readily prepared by co-precipitation using ammonium carbonate reagents. Whilst the simultaneous formation of a copper-ammine complex hinders the precipitation process, these materials can still compete against conventional malachite precursors. This is attributed to the exclusion of sodium carbonate in the preparation which renders the avoidance of catalytic poisons. However, precursors prepared by co-precipitation are still illustrated to be inferior to those prepared using supercritical technology. Georgeite derived catalysts prepared by both SAS and co-precipitation techniques are shown to be capable of competing against established industrial catalysts derived from crystalline precursors. For methanol synthesis, the georgeite catalysts have superior activity for the initial 10 hours but a severe deactivation phenomenon appears to hinder their performance and is a fundamental problem in this chemical process. It is plausible that this deactivation is correlated to the density of intermediate chemical species on the catalyst surface, which facilitates Cu sintering. However in direct contrast, these catalysts display exceptionally superior performance in comparison to the industrial standard for the LTS reaction, both in terms of catalyst activity and stability. This can be achieved without the alumina component which could eventually make it redundant in the construction of these catalysts. It is emphasised that these significant findings will permanently alter the way georgeite is perceived in the field of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts regarding how these distinct catalysts operate under testing conditions. Evidently, the ‘structure-activity’ relationship was examined in more detail using state of the art techniques to rationalise these catalyst behaviours. This involved examination of both georgeite and malachite precursors, and their subsequent evolution into final state catalysts. This enabled a direct comparison to be made which could shed new light on their unique properties. It was determined that both precursors have a porous meso-structure, which is found to be a key attribute of an optimum catalyst. However, the formation of intimately mixed, poorly structured phases derived from high temperature carbonate species with negligible sodium loadings are also expressed as essential components of an optimum catalyst, and this is readily achieved from georgeite precursors.

Abstract:
The Portuguese Expeditionary Force fought in the trenches of northern France from April 1917 to April 1918. on 9 April 1918 the sledgehammer blow of Operation Georgette fell upon the exhausted Portuguese troops. British accounts of the Portuguese Corps’ participation in combat on the Western Front are terse. Many are dismissive. in fact, Portuguese units experienced heavy combat and successfully held their ground against all attacks. Regarding Georgette, the standard British narrative holds that most of the Portuguese soldiers threw their weapons aside and ran. the account is incontrovertibly false. Most of the Portuguese combat troops held their ground against the German assault. This thesis details the history of the Portuguese Expeditionary Force.

Abstract:
This thesis will serve as a case study on the translation of sociolectal literature, using my translation into English of Acadian author Georgette LeBlanc’s second collection of poetry, Amédé, as a paradigm. Written in the Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French sociolect, this work represents an interesting example of the difficulties that can arise while translating minority language literature, from both a linguistic and discursive perspective. Broadly speaking, the objective of my analysis will be to explore the relationship between the literary representation of sociolect and the creation of underlying networks of meaning, focusing on both the linguistic and discursive aspects of LeBlanc’s choices in portraying Baie Sainte-Marie Acadian French in order to justify my translation of her work into African Nova Scotian English, also referred to as Africadian English.

Caetano, Marie-Laurentine. ""Moy qui suis, ô Dieu, ton humble chanteresse" : anthologie de la poésie spirituelle et féminine du XVIe siècle en français." Thesis, Lyon 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012LYO20028.

Full text
Abstract:
This anthology gathers spiritual poems written by women from the sixteenth century, suggesting a new way of discovering the poetry from the Renaissance ; indeed, we have chosen texts written by women in preference to texts written by men which have usually been strongly emphasized throughout literary history, and also by choosing the spiritual inspiration which is different from the much better-known romantic Petrarchan inspiration. We have made a selection among Catholic works as well as reformed works, in order to show what the sixteenth century French spiritual life really was. We have added a study of the corpus to our anthology in order to justify our choice and to clear up the different important points in women's way of writing, this idea of spirituality and the use of the different forms of poetry, while mentioning research results at the same time, taking into account the most significant progress which has been made concerning the publishing of women's works

Smits, Georgette. "The geochemical history of the sedimentary rocks of the Witwatersrand as reflected in the mineralogy of the heavy-mineral assemblage of the uranium-bearing reefs of the Central Rand Group / Georgette Smits." Thesis, Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/793.

Full text
Abstract:
The well-known Archaean gold deposit on the Witwatersrand is the world's principal source of this precious metal. A tectonically active hinterland comprising Archaean granite-greenstone terrane and pre-Witwatersrand sediments provided the detritus which was deposited at major points of fluvial influx along the northern and western periphery of the Witwatersrand Basin during the sedimentation of the Central Rand Group. The geochemical characteristics of the environment which prevailed at the earth's surface at the time of sedimentation can be reconstructed from the response of the detrital constituents to the changes in surficial conditions during the different stages of the exogenic cycle and after burial at the final site of deposition. The information is provided by the following groups of minerals: (1) those that must have been common in the source rocks but are absent in the reefs, (2) constituents that were preserved during the exogenic cycle, including those altered before denudation of the provenance area, and (3) altered or neo-formed products of post-burial origin. The absence of carbonates, sulphides other than pyrite, sulphates, apatite, iron oxides, and primary silicates suggest that the surface conditions during denudation in the provenance area and en route to the depositional environment must have been acid. The silicates that survived the pre-depositional processes or formed soon after deposition were subjected to diagenesis and metamorphism. The metamorphic silicate assemblage: chloritoid-pyrophyllite-chloriteIIb-muscovite2M1, indicates that the sedimentary rocks attained the lower stage of low-grade metamorphism at a temperature below 400°C and a pressure of about 3 kbar. The thorough elimination of iron oxides and the alteration of ilmenite to leucoxene pseudomorphs by the removal of iron at, or close to the earth's surface was a common process during the Archaean. The dissolution of iron requires neutral to acid conditions, and the required level of acidity increases with an increase in oxidation potential. Detrital uraninite, pyrite, chlorite, and biotite, which react readily under modern (oxidizing) surface conditions, were preserved during the exogenic cycle. Low surface temperatures and rapid erosion and accumulation of large supplies of debris could have delayed the reaction of these oxygen-consuming minerals during denudation, erosion, and transportation. When the detritus arrived at the plane of final deposition, part of the unoxidized uraninite was encapsulated by microbiota, which prevented its reaction, while the remaining portion of uraninite became a constituent of the heavy-mineral assemblage. The common presence of relict uraninite in the matrix of the conglomerates indicates that uranium was dissolved from uraninite which was not shielded by organic matter. The shape of these partly or entirely leached grains was preserved by cutans which precipitated during the removal of uranium. The dissolved uranium was recaptured by dissolved titanium, and the two phases reprecipitated as the uranous titanate species, viz brannerite and uraniferous leucoxene of variable composition. In the Dominion Reef, at the base of the sedimentary succession that filled the basin, and in some of the reefs near the top of the supergroup, part of the uraninite was transformed in situ to coffinite through the addition of silica, a process which requires an alkaline-reducing environment. Such conditions were found, for example, in stagnant pools on the depositional plane onto which a braided channel pattern developed. Owing to the addition of titania and silica, the neo-formed uranous titanates and coffinite occupied much more space than the original uraninite, hence, the alteration of uraninite and, likewise, the formation of cutans took place at a time that the porosity of the sediment made provision for expansion and for the free circulation of pore solutions, Le. shortly after burial. The missing minerals and the behaviour of ilmenite and the iron oxides indicate that the conditions at the Archaean earth's surface was distinctly acid. It is generally assumed that the partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the primitive atmosphere was much higher than it is at present, a condition which must have increased the acidity of the rain water, groundwater and surface waters. Of the oxygen-consuming minerals, only uraninite was oxidized, which implies that the uranium oxide was the most efficient sink for oxygen. The oxidation of uraninite after deposition at the palaeosurface without that of the detrital minerals pyrite, chlorite, and biotite, indicates that only limited amounts of oxygen must have been available at the time of sedimentation.

Bolduc, Lucie. "Construction identitaire dans la littérature "beure" : l'exemple de Georgette! de Farida Belghoul." Mémoire, 2011. http://www.archipel.uqam.ca/4454/1/M12402.pdf.
