Abstract:
Arising as direct fruits of keen nightlife observation, the new paintings George Desvallières and Georges Rouault exhibit at the Salon d'Automne from 1903 are gradually pervaded by an implicit Christianity, translating a deep sense of pity felt on prostitutes and showmen. The emergence of this new type of production, which is quickly associated with the figure of suffering Christ, seems to be encouraged by the strong personality of the writer Léon Bloy, met by the two painters in April 1904. By privileging the emotional impact, Desvallières and Rouault set up a new iconography with singular and resolutely expressive plastic that seems to be part of a social approach to denounce the masked monstrosities of the world, and which participates in the questioning of the Sulpician art at the beginning of the century. The term "neo-Christian" is used by Desvallières to describe all "intellectuals, poets, scholar and artists" longing for a renewal of religious art. Since the failure of Joris-Karl Huysmans' attempt at Ligugé in 1901, to which Rouault has joined, it seems that Desvallières has become the main actor of this renewal, both in his painting and writings. In addition to a renewed Christian art, more modern and constructive, he is advocating for the creation of a new school of religious art placed under the protection of Notre-Dame de Paris. Despite the fact this project would not succeed right away, it arouses the interest of Maurice Denis and is undoubtedly at the origin of the creation of Workshops of Sacred Art in 1919

Abstract:
After the collapse of the Soviet Union the former member states have started the transformation process. The transformation process from planned to market economy includes not only the adaptation of the economy to the new market rules but also the profound social and political transformation. For this reason such processes present huge challenges to affected societies. The transformational recession in Georgia was significantly enhanced by the civil war and by ethnic conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia. During the ethnic conflicts and civil war the business and technical infrastructure were damaged and most of them were completely destroyed. Poverty and political instability were predominated. The trade relations with the member countries of Council of Mutual Economic Assistance (Comecon) were aborted. Moreover, the conflict in South Ossetia hampered the power supply from Russia and a conflict in Abkhazia, the production and trade with tea and citruses, which were major trade commodities at that time. In the beginning of 90-ies, Georgian government with the assistance of international organizations, such as International Monetary Fund and World Bank started to elaborate political and economical reforms. The reforms included several aspects, such as the transfer of public assets to private through privatization, the liberalization of domestic market and trade and the creation of market-oriented institutions. Because of lack in implementation neither economical nor political transformation has been achieved. For instance, by the begin of market oriented reforms the awareness of policy makers about the importance of entrepreneurship, in particular small and medium ones for the economy was low. The absence of previous experience prevented the elaboration of appropriate policy instruments and methods for the development of competitive market economy. The stimulation of private sector has been generally neglected. This had a severe affect on political, social and economical problems, which still hampers the development of middle class in Georgia. The presented research indicates that productive entrepreneurship is a driving force of an economy. The entrepreneurial activities on the one hand facilitate the resource allocation and on the other through the development of new products and services urge the competition. Furthermore, they contribute to technological improvements through innovation, create jobs and thus boost the economic and social development of a particular region or country. However, it is important that the legal and institutional framework is appropriately settled. Unlike mature market economies, Georgia is not characterized by well-developed sector of small and medium sized businesses. Most existing SMEs are operating in local markets and predominantly in the shadow economy. It is also noteworthy that small business in Georgia belongs to so called “mom and pop” rather than to innovative, growth oriented businesses. They are mostly engaged in trade and craft. In addition of poor performance, the business activity of SMEs is very centralized. The vast majority of them are operating in the capital Tbilisi. The poor performance of small and medium businesses in Georgia and their negligence by the market forces is among others due to the armed conflicts and state failure. As in the beginning of transformation process, down to the present day, the state fails to provide necessary conditions, such as rule of law, the protection of property rights and competition, transparent and uncorrupted public administration. The result is the weak middle class. The weak middle class by itself has a negative impact on economic development and democratization process in Georgia.

Abstract:
Archdeacon George Anthony Denison was one of the most egregious High Church clergy of the nineteenth=century Church of England. During a life spanning much of that century, his working life included a period as a Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford (1828-38) linked with the Curacy of Cuddesdon (1832-1838); and then, for fifty- eight years, the incumbency of two country parishes: Broad Windsor in Dorset (1838-1845), and the village of East Brent in Somerset (1845-1896). He was Archdeacon of Taunton from 1851 to 1896. Beyond his parish, Denison was a leading figure in the revival of Convocation, as he was a significant figure involved in many of the controversies that assailed the nineteenth-century Church of England. Joyce Coombs’ George Anthony Denison: The Firebrand 1805-1896 (1984) is the only biography of Denison. Other historians have noticed Denison as an adjunct to other figures and events. There has been a tendency to explain Denison with recourse to a range of loose and ill-defined categories, premised on the notion that he is to be identified with the Oxford Movement and later Ritualists. Coombs also made similar assumptions which this thesis question. Moreover her object was to provide an account of Denison’s life rather than an analysis of his doctrine and social and political theology, the purpose of this thesis. The work of the revisionist historian, Peter Nockles, has redefined the historiographical and theological place of the Oxford Movement within the wider context of the history of the nineteenth=century Church of England. One of the fruits of Nockles’ The Oxford Movement in context: Anglican High Churchmanship 1760-1857 has been to identify more clearly a continuing strand of orthodox High Churchmanship. His analysis of the High Church tradition and of the Oxford Movement has demonstrated significant points of divergence. Not withstanding the recasting of the historiographical landscape, there has been no new assessment of George Anthony Denison. He has remained a prisoner of an older historiography both in the field of the history of nineteenth-century education and that of ecclesiastical history. This study sits within Nockles’ revisionist historiographical framework. Its object is to demonstrate that Denison was an example of one holding an orthodox world- view that endured beyond the divide of 1828-32; that he held a vision of the world ordered and governed by divine providence; that his notoriety as a controversialist is to be explained as a defence of this view with its concomitant doctrines. Denison has left a large body of polemical writings, providing the sources to examine this premise. Arguably Denison has been too easily dismissed as a mere controversialist, yet his polemical writings usually sold in the many thousands (often 5,000 -7,000 copies) suggesting that his views were considered to be of some account by his contemporaries.

Abstract:
The recent discovery of fossil hominoids in Thailand and Myanmar unveiled new episodes of the evolutionary history of this group. Those fossils were unearthed in three distinct sites: Chiang Muan in north-western Thailand, Khorat plateau in north-eastern Thailand and the Irrawaddy formation in Central Myanmar. These sites have been geologically characterized and precisely dated between 8. 8 and 13 Ma. The descriptions of those fossils allowed an attribution to Khoratpithecus. Within this genus, three species have been recognized. Morphologically, Khoratpithecus display clear affinities to extant Pongo and, to a lesser extend, Sivapithecus from Siwaliks. The morphology of dental roots within hominoids has been studied using inner anatomy imaging techniques. This morphology displays high taxonomical value, and can be used in phylogenetical studies. Morphometrical analyses of dental crowns, along with virtual reconstruction of shattered or distorted fossils, have been performed using X-ray microtomography. Phylogenetical analyses integrating new specimens and new data confirmed Khoratpithecus as a sister-group of orang-utans. On the other hand, the genus Lufengpithecus, despite classically attributed to Pongo clade, appears closer to Dryopithecus than to Pongo. Such a phylogeny strengthens the hypothesis of a West-East migration through the South of Himalaya for Pongo clade, and a migration from Europe through the North of Himalaya fot Lufengpithecus

Militaru, Alexandra-Corina. Thesis, Rennes 2, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018REN20036.

Full text
Abstract:
The starting point lies in the act of listening and the impression of improvisation left by Enesco's musical works on us, subjective listeners. We shall place the musical experience - and not just the mere musical text - at the core of our analysis. By what means and through what terminology can the impression of improvisation be accounted for in a written and theoretically composed musical work ? The seemingly improvised airs provide an answer to this question and will be considered as aesthetic fiction, in the sense that they exist only for the listener. Two categories emerge from the creation of a typical perception of the seemingly improvised airs, linked to specific writing techniques : written improvisation - as a potentially noted improvisation, and improvisatory writing - as a false improvisation. Written improvisation is defined as the potential avatar of improvisation, a change, a modification which implies writing. Improvisatory writing is defined as false improvisation ; consequently, it is nothing but an imitation, by means of composition, of improvisation

Abstract:
During the violent phases of transformation in post-Soviet Georgia the power of the police passed on to paramilitary groups. Under the rule of president Shevardnadze, however, the police regained a central political role, but it remained embedded in Soviet and pre-Soviet political structures. This becomes visible by looking at the political economy of the police. Informal taxes, purchase of office, and clientelism became established practices within the police. At present, the new government tries to carry out structural reforms in the police sector, which might lead to a break with the current hybrid Georgian state model.

Nikolaeva, Elena. "Landslide kinematics and interactions studied in central Georgia by using synthetic aperture radar interferometry, optical imagery and inverse modeling." Phd thesis, Universität Potsdam, 2014. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2014/7040/.

Abstract:
Landslides are one of the biggest natural hazards in Georgia, a mountainous country in the Caucasus. So far, no systematic monitoring and analysis of the dynamics of landslides in Georgia has been made. Especially as landslides are triggered by extrinsic processes, the analysis of landslides together with precipitation and earthquakes is challenging. In this thesis I describe the advantages and limits of remote sensing to detect and better understand the nature of landslide in Georgia. The thesis is written in a cumulative form, composing a general introduction, three manuscripts and a summary and outlook chapter. In the present work, I measure the surface displacement due to active landslides with different interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) methods. The slow landslides (several cm per year) are well detectable with two-pass interferometry. In same time, the extremely slow landslides (several mm per year) could be detected only with time series InSAR techniques. I exemplify the success of InSAR techniques by showing hitherto unknown landslides, located in the central part of Georgia. Both, the landslide extent and displacement rate is quantified. Further, to determine a possible depth and position of potential sliding planes, inverse models were developed. Inverse modeling searches for parameters of source which can create observed displacement distribution. I also empirically estimate the volume of the investigated landslide using displacement distributions as derived from InSAR combined with morphology from an aerial photography. I adapted a volume formula for our case, and also combined available seismicity and precipitation data to analyze potential triggering factors. A governing question was: What causes landslide acceleration as observed in the InSAR data? The investigated area (central Georgia) is seismically highly active. As an additional product of the InSAR data analysis, a deformation area associated with the 7th September Mw=6.0 earthquake was found. Evidences of surface ruptures directly associated with the earthquake could not be found in the field, however, during and after the earthquake new landslides were observed. The thesis highlights that deformation from InSAR may help to map area prone landslides triggering by earthquake, potentially providing a technique that is of relevance for country wide landslide monitoring, especially as new satellite sensors will emerge in the coming years.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is a comparative study of George Eliot and George Sand. Numerous references to Sand in Eliot's correspondence, as well as in Lewes's criticism, show that the link between the two female authors was more profound than suspected. Lewes and Sand met and corresponded for a few years and his art theory is greatly indebted to Sand's novels. Sand also exerted a profound influence on Eliot's intellectual and artistic development before Eliot met Lewes. Sand was her "divinity." However, it is Lewes who encouraged Eliot to follow in Sand's footsteps. The thesis is thematic and compares first the impact of Sand's religious novels such as Spiridion and Lélia. Then their social thought is examined, with novels such as Le pêche de Monsieur Antoine and Felix Holt, the Radical. The third part deals with their conception of art, with special attention to the doctrine of Realism and to Sand's rustic novels. Their conception of women is also examined as well as their position on the question of woman's liberation. Finally, I compare their views of the complex relationship between femaleness and literature, in the light of recent feminist criticism.

Abstract:
Retention practices in the U.S. Army face an incentive problem. The amount of work that officers undertake to retain a soldier should be based in part on those officers' expectations of accruing benefits. In this paper, I analyze Army National Guard retention rates to see if the possible mobility of a soldier (which affects his leadership's expected benefits) is systematically related to the probability he will be retained. A soldier's mobility translates into competition among military units for that soldier's service. There are two possible and contradictory effects of this competition. The first is the standard microeconomic effect of increasing competition in a monopsonistic environment. This would be expected to increase quantity (in this case, the quantity of soldiers retained). The second, less intuitive effect is that competition among battalions reduces a soldier's ability to effectively commit to long-term service with any battalion. This causes a reduction in quantity. I have found that the second effect dominates. This paper contributes to economic literature by improving the understanding of incentives in large organizations.

Abstract:
This article looks at contemporary Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan and addresses the question of how these states, which suffer from considerable institutional weaknesses, nevertheless retain the ability to control key aspects of statehood, first of all security and a measure of central authority. It is argued that these states invest only in selected aspects of statehood. The needed resources are mobilized by a system of informal taxes, which are then invested in certain selected core functions of statehood. This form of state depends on both formal and informal institutions, which are mutually supportive.

Abstract:
Tax estimation is a fundamental prerequisite for a sustainable fiscal policy. This paper uses the Georgian Household Survey and s simple microsimulation model in order to describe the household incomes in Georgia for the year 2005, their structure and regional distribution within eleven historical regions. Based on a thorough analysis of the existing taxable incomes and following the documentation of the applied model both a tax allowance and three percent raise of the income tax are estimated with respect to tax revenue and distributional effects. The paper comes to the conclusion that the poor income situation of most Georgian households can be mitigated by a tax allowance but is very difficult to be financed because of expected revenue losses. In spite of some progressive distributional effects of an increase of the tax burden, most households will find a very hard to cope with additional tax liabilities.

Abstract:
Poverty is currently wide spread in Georgia. This paper is dedicated to an analysis of the causes, the extent and the intensity of poverty in Georgia. With a strong focus on the period after Shevardnadze’s presidency, the paper shows how poverty has grown in the past 15 years. In spite of a rising per capita income, the variance within the distribution of income is also increasing. The widening gap between high and low incomes represents a danger for the Georgian society and is associated with high unemployment rates, a lack of education for entire societal strata and rising criminality. In addition, high inflation rates affect mainly low income groups. Apparently, the Rose Revolution of 2003 did not lead to an attenuation of poverty but rather intensified it.

Hunt, William Norman. "Destination marketing: George." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/5604.

Full text
Abstract:
A destination is often given its identity by its brand name, creating an image thereof in the customers’ minds which means that destinations exist not only physically but also mentally in the minds of people. Destination marketers play a role in the creation of the images of such destinations which is dependent on what the destination offers in its depth and breadth. Destination Marketing Organisations (DMOs) should be able to not only understand their destination’s offerings but also who they are targeting and how they should market the destination. DMOs have evolved to become more than mere destination information providers as considerable destination information is now created by fellow travellers which are shared via social networks. The most important change resulting from adopting the concept of social capital in the context of tourism would be that tourism scholars and DMOs become aware of the importance of resources obtained through an individual’s social interactions. Despite the fact that the town of George has a number of attributes it is able to market to potential visitors, it does however not automatically make it a desired destination. The main objective of this treatise is to determine what would give George its marketable destination identity which will be achieved by gaining an understanding of the local residents’ viewpoints of George and to measure them according to specific attributes which are carefully formulated in a survey questionnaire. This treatise aims to determine what George can do to create a destination identity and how such an identity can be applied in the successful marketing of George as a destination town. It is an exploratory quantitative study consisting of literature and case study components used to test proposed hypotheses. It aims to provide guidance to the destination marketers by way of researched literature on the topic of destination marketing as well as offer empirical data gathered from responses to a survey conducted with local residents of George which is focused on creating a destination identity through its business, cultural and sporting events. Based on the statistical analysis of the survey results it will be shown that a relationship exists between Destination Marketing and Events, Branding and Media, which plays a pivotal role in the successful marketing of such events and thereby the brand image of the destination. Based on the literature findings and the empirical data gained for this treatise it was shown that events can be used to create a new brand image for a town like George which already possesses a natural beauty and friendly people. Examples will be discussed where destinations throughout the world have managed to change their brand without changing their environment, from which they have gained a new destination brand. George can strategically convert what it already has to become the destination of choice in terms of intra-town activities and events which could not only enhance its own economy but also that of the surrounding towns. The geographic location of George and that of the Surrounding tourist attractive towns make it possible to design and implement intra-town events with relative ease. As found in researched literature, the residents should be made part of any destination marketing campaign. These events should be designed to incorporate the surrounding towns to capitalise on the concept of intra-town events where George becomes the main centre but uses outlying towns to lure tourist. Respondents to the survey indicate that they somewhat agree that George has sufficient infrastructure to host sports (μ = 3.77), cultural (μ = 3.61) and business events (μ = 3.88) and that hosting such events in George would create job opportunities. The responses for all three event types in this regard have a mean value above μ = 4. Respondents indicated that religious events are deemed the most important (mean value μ = 4.25) while also indicating that they agreed with a mean value of μ = 4.18 that entrance fees influence their decision to attend events. The empirical research conducted in George was designed to gain a representative viewpoint of its residents in terms of what they deem the identity of George to be, the main objective (ROM) of which was to determine what would give George its destination identity. The composite image of the residents of George was measured according to specific attributes which were carefully formulated in the survey.

Abstract:
The critical tradition in International Relations Theory has placed great emphasis on the metaphysical nature of sovereignty, the concept assumed to be pivotal to the modern states system. The present study offers an explanation for the metaphysics that characterizes the prevailing notion of sovereignty via insights provided by Bataille. The study focuses on the ontological implications to which Bataille&rsquo
s formulation of sovereignty gives rise. Underlying this endeavor is to probe into the ways in which these implications enrich our understanding of sovereignty. One of the most important achievements of Bataille&rsquo
s approach to sovereignty is that it does not treat sovereignty as merely an administrative and legal issue. This achievement is highly critical in the sense that it enables us to realize the metaphysical dimension of sovereignty. This metaphysics has an important potential to render the problematic points in sovereignty visible. Through the analysis of these points, this study elaborates on the historical development of political authority and state sovereignty. Taking the anthropological data provided by Bataille into account the study claims that with the emergence of modernity, there came into existence a new metaphysical representation of sovereignty.

Abstract:
Saint Georges: "A Shared Saint" in the Mediterranean ? An Historical and Anthropological Approach to Pilgrimage (Turkey and Lebanon)Abstract The people of the Mediterranean basin share ways of living and practicing their faith, which resist religious divisions and political manipulations. The religious landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean is more complex and is marked by forms of inter-confessional convergence. This thesis is an anthropological gaze towards a reading of political and cultural changes that affect sanctuaries and recent transformations of rites around two ambiguous shrines. Although this thesis pays attention to two case studies in particular, namely Aya Yorgi in Turkey and Mar Jirjes al Batiyeh in Lebanon, it draws on multi–disciplinary research in order to set a broader context. These places are explored deeply through qualitative analysis, while at the same time taking note of parallel work concerned with other sites such as Lod, Edirne and Athens. Ranging from the search for spirituality around the sites dedicated to St George, my findings that include spiritual as well as secular aspirations suggest a deconstruction of poles of meaning such as sacred and profane, movement and place, religion and secularity, community and individual. This methodologically diverse study argues that, contrary to perception, traditional forms of religious rituals are not necessarily incompatible with late–modern consumer culture. Through consumer culture, religious traditions are being revitalized. Despite the “deep rooted kinship” of the territorial resemblances of modern Turkey and Lebanon, for almost one hundred years, they have been evolving in their own separate lines and pace. Turkey has almost managed to become a nation state after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, less heterogeneous in terms of religious confessions and growing prevalence of Sunni Islam in public and private sphere along with ambivalent secularism. However Lebanon on the other hand is a small country in the region with sectarian political structural system where the confessions sometimes act like different ethnical entities and creating a nation is still a goal matter. Therefore via this study I aim to clarify if the difference between two countries’ demographic, linguistic, and socio political constructions have impact on the attribution of meaning to recently popular anthropological research area: “shared sacred sites” The shared sacred sites that I am scrutinizing throughout this study are both dedicated to Saint George - an outstanding saintly figure all around Middle East, Europe and Balkans: Aya Yorgi is the Turco-Greek name for Saint George and Mar Jirjes (Jiryes, Gerges) is the name given to the same saint in Lebanese Arabic

Roux, Pascale. "Georges Henein : écritures polémiques." Thesis, Paris 3, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009PA030160/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The Egyptian, French-speaking writer and leader of the surrealist movement in Cairo, Georges Henein [1914-1974] was one of the most subversive spirits of pre-Nasser Egypt. The whole of his literary trajectory is crossed by the idea that the artist, in order to be modern, must plunge entirely and unconditionally into the great “social fray”: literature is a political weapon with which to carry out social battles and the author must seek assiduously and in all his forms, polemic debates. Approached most of the time from the angle of the history of ideas, or under that of linguistics and rhetoric, polemical writings occupy, in the field of the literary studies, largely a secondary place. This study, which is based on an extremely diversified corpus and which is grounded on a transversal approach to the texts, would like to contribute to forge relevant tools for analysis beyond any singular work herein. In addition, if the adopted point of view is principally literary, the study would like to also propose the bases for an interdisciplinary model useful in the study of the polemical writings, taking approach into account, primarily, the contributions of linguistics and the socio-criticism. Our analysis distinguishes itself from a purely internal approach, which regards the text as a closed structure, as well as from purely external approaches, which approach it like a simple reflection of an external reality. The principal question that the study endeavors to answer deals thus with the way in which the polemical text organizes its articulation with regards to the extra-textual via the central concepts of polemical scene and representation

Carlyle, Diane P. (Diane Patricia). "Georges Bernanos, démolisseur d'impostures." Thesis, University of Auckland, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/2379.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis is divided into five parts. The first consists of a revue of the opinions of the critics on the work of Georges Bernanos, and then proceeds to define the aims of the thesis: (i) to combat the pernicious idea that we are dealing with a "Catholic Opus", one where the term "Catholic" would imply "idealistic" or "out of touch with reality", and to arrive at a different way of approaching the work; (ii) to lay bare the hidden unity of the work since the new interpretation we are seeking will derive from the relation of the parts to the whole; (iii) to show the radical nature of Bernanos's thought which lays bare the roots of the Discontents of our Civilisation and, by so doing, imparts a prophetic tone to his writings. In the second part Bernanos is placed within the context of his times and compared to other intellectuals, both Catholic and non-Catholic, in order to separate the "Catholic" from the "non-Catholic" elements in his work. Next, using the methods of Charles Mauron, we study the Youthful Works. In the third part, following the methods of Lucien Goldmann, we place the Novels in the context of Ecclesiastical Politics. In the fourth part we trace the transformation of the Novelist into the political pundit, then we go back to La Grande peur des bien-pensants to retrace the origins of his political thinking. Chapter twelve, "Birth of the Modem World", traces the development of capitalism in France and concomitant evolution of the value-system and ways of thinking. The fifth part contains the second half of the "Ecrits de Combat" entitled "The Modem World" which gives us Bernanos's view - a prophetic view - of the world we inhabit at present, Then the Conclusion.

Losseroy, Gilles. "Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes : Romancier." Nancy 2, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995NAN21010.

Full text
Abstract:
Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes (1884-1974) was a marginal writer during his lifetime and has remained so since his death. Even if his novels disconcert the readers and the critic it is nevertheless possible to situate his work with the surrealist movement. Within this context Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes can be seen as a freethiker, faithful to the negative spirit of Dada, of whom he is one of the most authentic representatives. He did not however wholly reject the movement of André Breton. In a effort to make the author better known to a larger public, this thesis presents firstly each of his works seperately, so as to make the study more accessible to the reader. The main aspect of the novels thematic is based on the quest for " knowledge ". This word is omnipresent in his works and covers a methodical exploration of the human being in his deepest or most vulgar motivations. The quest that is defined in this work in all its multiple aspects springs from the contradictory aspirations which express themselves inside the characters. That is why it starts with the problem of duality in the novels and short stories before following on with Dessaignes' heroes who aspire to having " the power of knowledge " the name of this radio programme is used on purpose, for he worked for the radio. Given the fondamental division of the human being, the characters of Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes formulate an absolue quest, the return to unity which often takes the form of a meeting in tradition. This unity to reconquer is the particular object of their desire
