Ross, Valerie, and kimg@deakin edu au. "EXTERNAL PUBLIC PIANO EXAMINATIONS IN MALAYSIA: SOCIAL AND SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE." Deakin University, 2002. http://tux.lib.deakin.edu.au./adt-VDU/public/adt-VDU20031028.140256.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis investigated the social and symbolic significance of acquiring a 'music education' through the taking of piano tuition and external public music examinations. It aimed to discover why the learning of the piano and the certification of musical attainment are so prevalent and revered among Malaysian music students. Its purpose was to unravel the socio-cultural raison d'etre of this approach to music education through the creation of a metatheoretical schema, which is premised upon the theories of symbolic interactionist, George Herbert Mead, music analyst, Heinrich Schenker and social theorist, George Ritzer. Central to the argument in this instance is the symbolic significance associated with the act of playing the piano. The investigation attempted to determine if this 'act' conveyed a symbolic meaning that is peculiar to a specific cultural vista. It further examined the degree to which this practice represented both a validation and a sense of conformity to social norms in the continuity and stability of an expanding middle class society in Malaysia. The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) is the largest of the five main external public music examination boards that operate in Malaysia. Since 1948, over one million candidates have enrolled for ABRSM examinations in Malaysia and a team of approximately thirty ABRSM examiners visit Malaysia for three months every year. The majority of the candidates are pianists. Given such large numbers of piano candidates, one might expect a healthy development of musical talent in the country with aspiring pianists eager to demonstrate their musical prowess. However, this does not seem to be the case. On the contrary, there appears to be a curious lacuna between the growing number of students who enrol for external public music examinations and the seemingly lack of interest in public music making and the honing of general musicianship skills. The thesis hence examined the symbolic meaning of this socio-rausicological phenomena.

Lipori, Daniel George 1966. "Georg Wenzel Ritter (1748-1808) and the Mannheim bassoon school." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/289600.

Full text
Abstract:
Georg Wenzel Ritter (1748-1808) was one of the greatest bassoon players from the past. He was an indispensable part of the Mannheim orchestra, arguably the finest musical ensemble in Europe at that time. He was known all over Europe as a bassoonist with tremendous ability and frequently traveled abroad as a soloist. He also taught many students throughout his lifetime, including Etienne Ozi and Georg Brandt. The bassoon on which Ritter performed was a six-keyed bassoon. This instrument precedes the earliest known documented evidence of the six-keyed bassoon's existence by nearly fifteen years. Ritter also left us a fingering chart which lists an extreme range, going all the way up to eb2 Ritter composed several works which have been out of print for over 200 years or are only available in manuscript. These works include a set of quartets for bassoon, violin, viola, and bass instrument and a duet for two bassoons. These compositions give us an excellent indication of the high level of Ritter's playing ability through the many technically demanding passages. Moreover, other composers, including W. A. Mozart, knew Ritter's playing well and composed some of their own works with Ritter in mind for the bassoon parts. Some of Mozart's works for Ritter include the bassoon parts to the opera Idomeneo K366 and the Sinfonia Concertante for Winds K297b. Ritter is certainly an important figure in the history and development of bassoon playing and deserves more recognition as a prominent bassoon performer, teacher, and composer from the 18th century.

Abstract:
Saint Georges: "A Shared Saint" in the Mediterranean ? An Historical and Anthropological Approach to Pilgrimage (Turkey and Lebanon)Abstract The people of the Mediterranean basin share ways of living and practicing their faith, which resist religious divisions and political manipulations. The religious landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean is more complex and is marked by forms of inter-confessional convergence. This thesis is an anthropological gaze towards a reading of political and cultural changes that affect sanctuaries and recent transformations of rites around two ambiguous shrines. Although this thesis pays attention to two case studies in particular, namely Aya Yorgi in Turkey and Mar Jirjes al Batiyeh in Lebanon, it draws on multi–disciplinary research in order to set a broader context. These places are explored deeply through qualitative analysis, while at the same time taking note of parallel work concerned with other sites such as Lod, Edirne and Athens. Ranging from the search for spirituality around the sites dedicated to St George, my findings that include spiritual as well as secular aspirations suggest a deconstruction of poles of meaning such as sacred and profane, movement and place, religion and secularity, community and individual. This methodologically diverse study argues that, contrary to perception, traditional forms of religious rituals are not necessarily incompatible with late–modern consumer culture. Through consumer culture, religious traditions are being revitalized. Despite the “deep rooted kinship” of the territorial resemblances of modern Turkey and Lebanon, for almost one hundred years, they have been evolving in their own separate lines and pace. Turkey has almost managed to become a nation state after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, less heterogeneous in terms of religious confessions and growing prevalence of Sunni Islam in public and private sphere along with ambivalent secularism. However Lebanon on the other hand is a small country in the region with sectarian political structural system where the confessions sometimes act like different ethnical entities and creating a nation is still a goal matter. Therefore via this study I aim to clarify if the difference between two countries’ demographic, linguistic, and socio political constructions have impact on the attribution of meaning to recently popular anthropological research area: “shared sacred sites” The shared sacred sites that I am scrutinizing throughout this study are both dedicated to Saint George - an outstanding saintly figure all around Middle East, Europe and Balkans: Aya Yorgi is the Turco-Greek name for Saint George and Mar Jirjes (Jiryes, Gerges) is the name given to the same saint in Lebanese Arabic
