Abstract:
Geoecological design and expertise accompany socio-economic human activity as a planetary phenomenon. Biogeochemical activity of the state cannot go beyond the environmental barriers that are available to us as a category of land use. As proof, three stages of geospatial platform formation and analysis of extensive models of breakthrough development of one category at the expense of the others are presented. This leads to the accumulation of negative effects, the elimination of which is achieved in the form of infectious epidemics. Cost (as a labor theory) and health (as an economic activity of a person) form the limits of development strategies of an enterprise, economic entity, and the state. Sanitary legislation does not belong to the norms of law, but it forms the beginning of the measurement of space: first in the interests of a man, and then technology and the economy.

Abstract:
Geo-environmental treatment projects had not been implemented in many old mines of China. Those mines environment has got increasingly deteriorated. So the government provides specialized policies and funding to solve the environmental problems of those mines. Based on the characteristics of the geological environmental treatment projects of old mines, the paper puts forward the principle and index of the treatment projects design and applies in the design of Fengshan limestone mine, Guangxi. It indicated that: (1)The geological environment problems are complex and diverse, and the treatment projects involve a multi-disciplinary cross which are environmental geology, ecology geology, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering and landscape works. It needs to consider the follow key indicators: Geo-environment problems, Feasibility, Benefit, and social demand. (2) the limestone mine in FengShan is high 134m, and there had happened a collapse which had 2.1×104 m3, and killed 6 people. The geo-environment problems include rockfall, rock collapse, land and vegetation destruction, and landscape damage. The mine local in the Leye-Fengshan International Geological Park in Guangxi, the requests for travel security and sight-viewing environment are extremely high. Therefore, drainage, anchoring, rockfalls platforms and rock carvings would be implemented for the purpose of transforming the mine into a sight spot in the park.(3) The treatment projects eliminate the geo-hazard and build the world-class carving attractions reflect the benefit of the project management from the environment, economy and society aspects.

Abstract:
An engineering geological approach to analysed geo-hazards affecting engineering and planning design decisions is presented. The methodological procedures include hazard identification, hazard assessment, site vulnerability, economic cost, environmental impact, risk assessment, social acceptability, decision analysis and engineering design criteria. The practical application of the Engineering Geological Methodology (EGM) is shown in several case studies: dam safety problems due to slope instability and induced seismicity during reservoir filling; seismic hazard assessment in regions with insufficient seismic data and tectonic information; and large scale geo-hazards due to giant landslides and related tsunamis. The EGM approach can provide fundamental criteria for engineering decisions and territorial planning. Social acceptability should be included in the decision analysis being evaluated according with the hazard level of the geological process and the corresponding risk of the affected elements. Examples of geo-hazards and their social acceptability are presented.

Abstract:
Plastic materials are widely used in geotechnical engineering, especially as geosynthetics. The use of plastic-based products involves serious environmental risks caused by their degradation. Innovative research has been focusing on biodegradable polymers of natural origin, especially on poly(lactic acid) (PLA), to reduce the use of plastics. This study aims to explore the potentiality of biopolymers for the production of geogrids, measuring the chemical and mechanical characteristics of raw materials and of prototype samples, similar to those available on the market. First, chemical composition and optical purity were determined by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) and polarimetry. Furthermore, samples of uniaxial and biaxial geogrids were custom-molded using a professional 3D printer. Mechanical properties were measured both on the filament and on the prototype geogrids. The maximum tensile resistance was 6.76 kN/m for the neat-PLA filament and 10.14 kN/m for uniaxial prototype geogrids produced with PLA-based polymer mixed with titanium dioxide. PLA-based materials showed higher tensile properties than polypropylene (PP), the most common petroleum derivative. Conversely, such biomaterials seem to be more brittle and with scarce elongation rate respect PP. Nonetheless, these results are encouraging and can support the use of PLA-based materials for innovative biodegradable geosynthetics production, especially if used in combination with live plants.

Abstract:
Geotextiles, a group of high-performance materials, have grown during the last decades into needful auxiliaries when it comes to infrastructure, soil, construction, agriculture and environmental applications. Although geotextiles made of synthetic fibers (geosynthetics) are considered a modern achievement, the basic concept dates back to ancient times when textiles consisting of locally available natural fibers were employed to increase the stability of roads and soils. In recent decades, considering the growing interest in environmental protection and sustainable development based on using renewable resources and the recovery and recycling of waste of various origins, the use of natural fibers-based geotextiles is a viable alternative, despite their limited-life service owing to their biodegradability. In addition to this feature, their low cost, good mechanical properties and large-scale accessibility recommend them for geo-engineering applications, environmental sensitive applications in geotechnical engineering, such as land improvements and soil erosion control. This paper focuses on geotextiles as a versatile tool in environmental applications given their high theoretic and practical relevance as substantiated by recent literature reports. Natural and synthetic geotextiles are presented herein, as well as their features that recommend them for geo-engineering. Insights on the main types of applications of geotextiles are also included, along with a wide variety of materials employed to perform specific functions.

Over the years, the field of geotechnical engineering focused on physical, chemical and mechanical aspects of the geomaterials. However, recent developments in environmental geotechnics have highlighted the impact of biological processes on geo-materials and their performance. Also, the present day geotechnical problems favour biological interventions to develop eco-friendly and sustainable technology. In view of this, the present study is a preliminary investigation on the impact of microbial loading on fine-grained soils. In addition, a protocol has been developed to establish ‘bio-geo interface’ between bacteria and the geo-material. However, long term studies are demanded in this direction for in-depth understanding of the mechanism for development of prospective application.

Abstract:
The characterisation of the risk of (new) chemicals to species/communities, when both the exposure/environmental concentration and effects (species sensitivity) are variable and uncertain, is the central issue in Probabilistic Environmental Risk Assessment. The spatial variability is one of the largest components of the total variability. This paper tries to explicitly account for this spatial variability by geo-referencing the exposure, effect and finally probabilistic risk. Geo-referencing makes the risk assessment more refined and realistic. In addition, it is also highlighted that geo-referencing the effects of chemicals (species sensitivity distribution) is still a large unexplored area but has large potential to improve probabilistic ecological risk assessments.

Abstract:
Groundwater contamination has been a growing issue in recent times as a result of population growth, urbanization and industrialization. Groundwater is highly susceptible to impacts associated with anthropogenic activities such as the release of waste materials to the environment. The groundwater vulnerability of an area is a function of the geologic and environmental factors of the area. The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of geological and environmental factors on groundwater quality in the Ndele Area of Southern Nigeria. Estimations of groundwater flow direction and overland flow direction in the study area were used to establish the likely groundwater vulnerable areas. The water quality index of groundwater sourced from hand-dug wells and boreholes in the study area was used to appraise the groundwater quality of different locations in the area. Water Quality Index is a means of summarizing and reporting water quality in a consistent manner. The mean values of water quality index parameters evaluated revealed that the WQI of water samples sourced from hand dug wells in the lower altitudes and hydraulc head areas (mini-watershed area) were found to be 101.5, which is categorised to be "unsafe for drinking," while those of the two control locations with higher altitudes and hydraulic heads were 69.0 and 67.2, respectively, and are categorised to be "poor water quality." Water samples sourced from boreholes with average depths of 40m in the lower altitudes and hydraulic head areas (mini-watershed areas) and two control areas were found to be 39.0, 44.3, and 41.2 m respectively and categorized to be "good water quality". Thus, based on some environmental ill practices such as the use of open pit toilets, discharge of suckaway to flow with surface runoffs, and improper disposal of domestic wastes in the area, this study has revealed that groundwater at the locations with lower hydraulic heads and altitudes (mini-watershed area) is highly vulnerable. This may be attributed to the fact that lower lands and hydraulic head areas are susceptible to overland and groundwater flow; hence, infiltration and water table recharge by water from higher altitudes that contaminate groundwater in such areas.

Abstract:
Analogue materials are widely used to simulate prototype rocks in geo-mechanical model tests. The large amounts of solid waste generated by a large-scale model test has always posed problems for studies. The re-use of analogue materials can significantly reduce the cost of geo-mechanical model tests and the resulting environmental problems. However, despite the environmental and economic benefits, there have been few reports on the re-use of analogue materials. In this work, a recycling method for a resin-based analogue material is studied experimentally. More than 300 samples were prepared and tested. By adding a certain amount of resin in solution form to the recycled material, regenerated samples with properties consistent with those of the samples prior to recycling were obtained. Based on a comparative analysis of the test data, an equation is proposed for the calculation of the appropriate amount of resin addition in the recycling process. Thus, a simple and effective recycling method is established for a resin-based analogue material. Verification was performed by independent tests on three group samples with different proportions, and the possibility of repeated recycling was also confirmed. The proposed recycling method makes the cyclic utilization of resin-based analogue material possible and is helpful for reducing the cost and pollution of geo-mechanical model tests.

Abstract:
This article demonstrates the capabilities and integrity of the environmental geological and geophysical techniques for planning the suitability of the extension of Helwan city for construction and engineering purposes. The geological and topographical mapping were utilized as well as environmental geophysical techniques (seismic refraction, ground penetrating radar (GPR), and resistivity soundings) for optimal land-use planning. The seismic refraction profiles were conducted to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of the bedrock, GPR was applied to define the main subsurface reflectors, and the geoelectrical resistivity survey was used to identify the subsurface stratigraphic sequence and the distribution of main structural elements impacting the investigated area. The integrated results and findings of the environmental geological and geophysical survey inferred two major distinctive subsurface layers: a thin surface layer represented by highly weathered limestone, with an average thickness of 3 m, and a bottom layer equivalent to the bedrock composed of hard limestone. In addition, GPR performed an analysis of two remarkable subsurface layers, which supported the generated model of other geophysical surveying techniques. Finally, all the geological and various geophysical techniques were integrated and merged to generate the optimal land-use plan of the extension of Helwan city for construction and engineering purposes and to avoid high-risk areas to reserve the sustainability of the new urban communities.

Abstract:
Abstract. The concept of surface geohazards in mining area is put forward, and the surface geohazards in mining area are divided into three categories: first is surface subsidence fissures, collapse, second is instability of structures, slope deformation hazards (high and steep slopes, landslides and collapses) , debris flows (debris flows, tailings reservoir dam break), third is vegetation cover degradation and environmental and ecological damage in mining area. Author analyses the research status of spatio-temporal characteristics of surface geohazards in mining areas and the representation of geo-infographics Spectrum. Characteristics of typical surface geohazards scene in mining areas can be recognized using multi-resource spatial data, adopting abstract generalization, visualization and analysis of the various features and phenomena from four aspects: geographical environment, geological environment, engineering activity and geohazards. The field presentations of spatial morphological structure and geo-environmental conditions and spatio-temporal process in surface geohazards characteristic area are summarized as data fields, which express the shape, structure, location and distribution of geohazard bodies, action and physical fields which is all fields affected the data field and the coupled field which is scalar or vector field formed by the coupling of two or more fields. By using spatial location, semantic description, attribute characteristics, geometric shape, evolution process and the information of the relationship between features, taking into account the characteristics of object structure, distribution and coupling, the geohazard infographics spectrum is constructed and characterize the multi-field geo-infographics spectrum of surface geohazards in mining areas. It is a composite analysis method of time and space. A preliminary example of geo-infographics spectrum is given.

Abstract:
At present, the main pipelines represent the most profitable economic means in terms of transportation, supply and exploitation of energy resources. Since their laying is associated with a change in the natural environment, the ecological study of these corridors is a prerequisite. Geo-ecological study of the main pipelines is divided into three stages. This is the study of the pipeline route, to establish the existing background before the work begins. The second stage is the establishment of environmental impact during the laying of the pipeline. The third step is to monitor the environmental problems encountered during exploitation. The presented article gives a geo-ecological study of the corridors of gas pipelines in the section 1200, 1000 and 700 mm on the Kazbegi-Red Bridge (North-South) section. Carried out works represents the first stage of the study, and we have identified the physical and biological characteristics of the pipeline corridors. It was determined the purity of air, noise, chemical composition of soil, water and vegetation cover, as well as engineering and geological conditions of gas pipeline corridors. The results obtained do not exceed the values of the maximum permissible concentrations adopted in Georgia and in European countries, although Pl, Co, Ni and Cd show increased values directly near the gas pipeline.
