This thesis argues for, citing the example of four novels published at or near to the millennium, the establishment of antirely new genre. But implicit in this is an investigstion into what is meant by term 'genre'. Further the nature of these novels makes central the way in which these novels should be grouped over the grouping itself.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis progresses to look at feature extraction and description for content based analysis involving audio and visual modes. The notion calculation is itself very simple - just a summation of the difference at points in two images. The measure is filtered using a simple digital filter whose output is analysed by Fourier. This is then processed to derive feature vectors from spectral and from regressive analysis. I do have some reservations here - it would appear that the classified data are aliased and there is no discussion of appropriate strategies to mitigate this, or as to whether it leads to untoward effects. I do note that one genre appears largely to be noise. I do have reservations beyond technical ones for it does appear that some of these points could be discussed within the papers bound into the thesis, but I seek clarification and guidance on these points at viva voce. I shall also seek information concerning how the parameters were set since this would appear important, yet some aspects in this choice remain unclear. The research does appear to have developed one of the more demanding data sets for experimental evaluation. This claim could have been amplified, or even made. That new technique appears to have been deployed to success would appear to argue against my technical concerns, but there is an issue of generalisation capability, or the new approach's likely capability of categorising correctly data that is as yet unseen but has been presented in an appropriate format. I certainly consider that the results should be strengthened by an analysis of statistical significance. I certainly agree that there is considerable scope for future work in this area. Mr Roach is also to be congratulated on a good record on conference publication but I do have some reservations of a technical nature for which I shall seek clarification at viva voce.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Recommender systems (RS) are used extensively in online retail and on media streaming platforms to help users filter the plethora of options at their disposal. Their goal is to provide users with suggestions of products or artworks that they might like. Content-based RS's make use of user and/or item metadata to predict user preferences, while collaborative-filtering (CF) has proven to be an effective approach in tasks such as predicting movie or music preferences of users in the absence of any metadata. Latent factor models have been used to achieve state-of-the-art accuracy in many CF settings, playing an especially large role in beating the benchmark set in the Netflix Prize in 2008. These models learn latent features for users and items to predict the preferences of users. The first latent factor models made use of matrix factorisation to learn latent factors, but more recent approaches have made use of neural architectures with embedding layers. This master's dissertation outlines collaborative genre tagging (CGT), a transfer learning application of CF that makes use of latent factors to predict genres of movies, using only explicit user ratings as model inputs.

Abstract:

This study deals with a research on what the opening sounds in movies tell us about the story that we are about to follow. The purpose is to examine if and how the sound in the first five minutes of the movie contribute in giving information about the film’s genre. The theoretical base includes both genre theory and Michel Chion’s theory on film sound. Six different movies representing different genres, countries and year of production are analyzed in an audiovisual way.

The result shows that the sound in the opening sequence could describe the genre which the movie belongs to, but it doesn’t always work like this. The analysis also shows examples on movies where the sound in the beginning of the movie focus on other things, like describing place or ethnicity. In some of the movies, especially the ones that represent adventure and action, you can hear the genre very clearly. In others, for example the comedy, there is a bit harder to decide if the sound alone could tell us about which genre the movie belongs to, and if the sound is typical for that specific genre or if it could be about almost everything. Furthermore, in some movies it was quite clear that the sound concentrates on describing something else instead, for example the place where the story is set.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the rhetorical features of blogs that lend them dialogic strength as an online genre through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin's theories of speech genres, utterances, and dialogism. As a relatively new online genre, blogs stem from previous genres (in print and online as well as verbal), but their emergence as a popular form of expression in our current culture demands attention to how blogs also offer us different rhetorical opportunities to meet our changing social exigencies as online subjects in the 21st century. This thesis was inspired by questions about how blogs redefine the rhetorical situation to alter our textual roles as readers, writers, and respondents in the new generic circumstances we encounter--and reproduce--online. Applying the framework of Henry Jenkins' Convergence Culture and Pierre Levy's Collective Intelligence, this thesis analyzes how blogs enable us as online subjects to add our utterances to our textual collective intelligence, which benefits from our personal experience and the epistemic conversations of blogs as online texts. In addition, it is also an inquiry into how the rhetorical circumstances of blogs as textual sites of collective intelligence can create a reciprocal learning environment in the writing classroom. I ultimately examine blogs through the lenses of alternative pedagogy--informed by David Wallace and Helen Rothschild Ewald's Mutuality in the Rhetoric and Composition Classroom and Xin Liu Gale's Teachers, Discourses, and Authority in the Postmodern Composition Classroom--to suggest the potential consequences of a writing education that includes how we are currently writing--and being written by--our culture's online generic practice of blogs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Genre conventions emerge across discourse communities over time to support the communication of ideas and information in socially and cognitively compatible forms. Digital genres frequently borrow heavily from the paper world even though the media are very different. This research sought to identify the existence and form of a truly digital genre. Preliminary results from a survey of user perceptions of the form and content of web home pages reveal a significant correlation between commonly found elements on such home pages and user preferences and expectations of type. Results suggest that the personal home page has rapidly evolved into a recognizable form with stable, user-preferred elements and thus can be considered the first truly digital genre.

Heeks, Richard James. "Discovery writing and genre." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/13802.

Full text
Abstract:
This study approaches ‘discovery writing’ in relation to genre, investigating whether different genres of writing might be associated with different kinds of writing processes. Discovery writing can be thought of as writing to find out what you think, and represents a reversal of the more usual sense that ideas precede writing, or that planning should precede writing. Discovery writing has previously been approached in terms of writers’ orientations, such as whether writers are Planners or Discoverers. This study engages with these previous theories, but places an emphasis on genres of writing, and on textual features, such as how writers write fictional characters, or how writers generate arguments when writing essays. The two main types of writing investigated are fiction writing and academic writing. Particular genres include short stories, crime novels, academic articles, and student essays. 11 writers were interviewed, ranging from professional fiction authors to undergraduate students. Interviews were based on a recent piece of a writer’s own writing. Most of the writers came from a literary background, being either fiction writers or Literature students. Interviews were based on set questions, but also allowed writers to describe their writing largely in their own terms and to describe aspects of their writing that interested them. A key aspect of this approach was that of engaging writers in their own interests, from where interview questions could provide a basis for discussion. Fiction writing seemed characterized by emergent processes, where writers experienced real life events and channelled their experiences and feelings into stories. The writing of characters was often associated with discovery. A key finding for fiction writing was that even writers who planned heavily and identified themselves somewhat as Planners, also tended to discover more about their characters when writing. Academic writing was characterized by difficulty, where discovery was often described in relation to struggling to summarize arguments or with finding key words. A key conclusion from this study is that writers may be Planners or Discoverers by orientation, as previous theory has recognised. However, the things that writers plan and discover, such as plots and characters, also play an important role in their writing processes.

Pantelides, Kate Lisbeth. "Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology." Scholar Commons, 2013. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/4557.

Full text
Abstract:
Though the pervasive rumor that the “traditional” dissertation persists because of the “I suffered, so they too should suffer” mentality — the professor revenge theory — students are often the ones eager to pin down writing genres so that they can master them. However, hopes to stabilize and thus capture the secret or equation of the dissertation genre are futile, since genres, like language, are alive: rhetorical, evolving, and flexible. Thus, to demonstrate the contemporary context of the dissertation genre, the conflicting perspectives of university stakeholders, the forces working on the genre to enact change, and the process by which genre knowledge develops and transfers in the highest levels of university writing, Mapping Dissertation Genre Ecology explores the discourse, both written and spoken, which constitutes the dissertation as a discursive construct — what I call the dissertation genre ecology. To better understand how dissertations are shaped institutionally, I ask the following questions: How is the dissertation as a genre constituted by various stakeholder groups at the university? How do these myriad accounts contribute to a larger system, a dissertation genre ecology at the university? And, ultimately, how does the dissertation genre ecology affect genre change? Through the use of rhetorical genre theory, my study develops a broad, interdisciplinary conception of genre, one that is not mired in formalistic worries about fixing genre in place. I use the voices of students and faculty from the humanities and social sciences as well as interdisciplinary documents as data for this project. By examining these discursive artifacts and making institutional tensions explicit, my project has broad implications for WAC/WID literature in transfer and genre studies.

Petrenz, Philipp. "Cross-lingual genre classification." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/9658.

Full text
Abstract:
Automated classification of texts into genres can benefit NLP applications, in that the structure, location and even interpretation of information within a text are dictated by its genre. Cross-lingual methods promise such benefits to languages which lack genre-annotated training data. While there has been work on genre classification for over two decades, none has considered cross-lingual methods before the start of this project. My research aims to fill this gap. It follows previous approaches to monolingual genre classification that exploit simple, low-level text features, many of which can be extracted in different languages and have similar functions. This contrasts with work on cross-lingual topic or sentiment classification of texts that typically use word frequencies as features. These have been shown to have limited use when it comes to genres. Many such methods also assume cross-lingual resources, such as machine translation, which limits the range of their application. A selection of these approaches are used as baselines in my experiments. I report the results of two semi-supervised methods for exploiting genre-labelled source language texts and unlabelled target language texts. The first is a relatively simple algorithm that bridges the language gap by exploiting cross-lingual features and then iteratively re-trains a classification model on previously predicted target texts. My results show that this approach works well where only few cross-lingual resources are available and texts are to be classified into broad genre categories. It is also shown that further improvements can be achieved through multi-lingual training or cross-lingual feature selection if genre-annotated texts are available in several source languages. The second is a variant of the label propagation algorithm. This graph-based classifier learns genre-specific feature set weights from both source and target language texts and uses them to adjust the propagation channels for each text. This allows further feature sets to be added as additional resources, such as Part of Speech taggers, become available. While the method performs well even with basic text features, it is shown to benefit from additional feature sets. Results also indicate that it handles fine-grained genre classes better than the iterative re-labelling method.

Trat, Josette. "Genre et mouvements sociaux." Versailles-St Quentin en Yvelines, 2002. http://www.theses.fr/2002VERSA001.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of contemporary social movements, relying on a gender-based approach. It comprises four sections. The first section focuses mainly on the history of clashes between the feminist and the working-class movements in France between 1970 and the early 1990s. It is shown that a structural conflict divides the two social movements. In order, however, to understand the lack of dialogue, during taht period, it also proves necessary to take into account the fact that the French Communist Party went through a belated destalinization process, while wielding every effort to keep all social movements under its sway. The second section provides a critical analysis of the thought of F. Engels, the 19th century socialist theorist, on the one hand, and of C. Delphy's concept of "domestic mode of producction" on the other. The approach finally adopted is shown to differ from both orthodox Marxist theory and radical feminist thought: it is argued that social structure cannot be explained except in terms of the complex interaction between class relations and gender relations. The third section raises the question of how to define social movements. A. Touraine's normative definition is discussed ans discarded: instead it is suggested that a distinction should be made between social movements arising from political crises and long-term social movements allowing oppressed groups to organize and voice their claims. Then, relying on first-hand field work, the text investigates what active part women can be observed to play in both male-dominated and female-dominated social movements. Evidence is also provided for the relevance of an approach in terms of "gendered social movement". The last section is devoted to analysing the various dimensions of oppression and exploring the various paths the oppressed (wheter male or female) will find to put an end to victimization and move from silence to resistance

Simson, H. "Landscape after landscape : pre-genre Italian backgrounds in a post-genre digital age." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2017. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1563810/.

Full text
Abstract:
Artificial perspective and subsequent photographic technologies have been implicated in a dominating Western way of seeing—referred to here as 'natural vision'—in the critical discourses that have defined the last thirty years. These discourses of visual representation provide the background context against which the questions that shape this research are formed. It is set out to investigate whether early background forms derived from proto-perspective paintings can be employed to form an invigorated idea of landscape that is addressed to the crises that shape the present. And secondly, it asks whether it might be possible to redeploy perspectival technologies so that their earliest beginnings can problematise today’s digital contexts, rather than dismissing perspective as the progenitor of a visuality that controls and fixes the status of the observer in the logic of late capitalism. The thesis articulates the artwork’s material presence in relation to these visual, image-producing technologies. It is divided into three chapters, which outline twinned aspects of the practical and theoretical research: ‘Landscape / Fragment’, ‘Materiality / Affect’, and ‘Perspective / Projection’. Each chapter explores different facets of the argument, and the theoretical discussion unfolds through the studio work. With its emphasis on materiality, the thesis considers how these technologies can be used to challenge dominating visual structures as opposed to continually reinforcing them. The research looks beyond the linguistic tendencies of poststructuralism, and considers recent theories of materiality and affect. It draws from semiotic approaches that challenge the scientifically endorsed image of visual truth, and explores other articulations for the landscape image. It asks how these might be used to reimagine subject-spatial configurations defined through representation, and to challenge the associated linearity of narrative history. Abstract:
This thesis uses the prism of genre to explore the character of self/other representations in five 'genre films' made by the Russian filmmaker Aleksei Balabanov and released between 1997 and 2006. It provides the first book-length study of Balabanov and aims to shed new light on the complexity of genre films and their representation techniques in an influential area of post-Soviet Russian cinema. The thesis aims to deconstruct the widespread perception of Balabanov as a populist director of 'mere genre movies', which are replete with xenophobic self/other representations. The films under investigation are linked through their developments of genre, evolving themes, an overarching narrative and multiple dialogicity among themselves, with their audiences and with Hollywood. They are shown to reflect the changing post-Soviet Russian Zeitgeist and its historical context. They do so by self-consciously deploying Hollywood genres and blending them with transgeneric modes/styles under the influence of renowned cinematic and literary inter-/transtextual works. The study examines the relationship between Balabanov's articulation of post-Soviet Russian identity vis-à-vis representations of dominant others, such as America, the Caucasus, Western Europe, Ukraine and, importantly, what the films portray as society's ruling criminal elites (primarily the New Russian 'gangsters').Combining the concepts of film genre with inter-/transtextuality within close film-textual analyses, the thesis focuses on the filmic texts and their visual, sound and narrative elements, which together indicate particular genre blends and their parabolic/allegorical potential. The analytical chapters investigate how these impinge upon the ideological orientation of Balabanov's approach to self/other representations. Film genre thus provides a method for exploring the articulations of an evolving post-Soviet Russian identity in Balabanov's work. The thesis reveals the director's self-consciously ambiguous perspectives on Russia's self, its own otherness in a globalised/ing world and the corrupting influences of the country's state-Socialist militarist past, previous and current military conflicts and the country's capitulation to the capitalist market. The application of a conceptual framework drawn from film genre studies enables the thesis to explore how these popular genre films become a platform for presentations of an internally divided Russian national self in its interactions with its various constitutive others, themselves characterised by diversity and inner heterogeneity. As a result, the thesis provides a long-overdue methodological interpretation of the most controversial segment of Balabanov's oeuvre and challenges received bi-partite views of this hitherto largely misrepresented auteur.

Abstract:
Within two months of its emergence, the BP Gulf Oil spill had become the worst environmental disaster in United States history. However, for those studying public relations the oil spill brought more than ecological disaster, by providing a case study of crisis communication. Although there were a number of crisis responses from BP throughout the course of the oil spill, the primary crisis response crafted by BP was an image restoration campaign which premiered in early June 2010. This campaign, though it exhibits qualities of a standard crisis response, was wildly unpopular with the United States Government and citizenry. This rhetorical analysis attempts to uncover the reasons behind the campaign's failure through an application of the genre model of criticism. By defining the crisis communication genre and applying it to the artifact, the current study uncovers the reasons behind the failure of the campaign. Through this discussion, this analysis identifies that BP did not address all necessary exigencies, nor did it consider the influence a rhetor can have on a message. An explanation for the failure of BP' s campaign provided a plethora of implications to the fields of public . relations and rhetorical criticism, while beginning a discussion to help define the crisis communication genre.

Abstract:
Our object of research concerns the study of the relevance of the Gender Mainstreaming approach in HRM. Reconsidering the universal model criticized by the feminist movements for its “apparent neutrality” in favour of a male domination, the first part of our thesis confronts two theoretical approaches of Human Resources Management which confront the monolithic base of the traditional HRM model : the management of diversity on the one hand, and the dual perspective of the Gender Mainstreaming approach in HRM, on the other hand. This dialectical analysis clarifies the relevance of the Gender Mainstreaming approach in HRM, which is the subject thereafter of an empirical confrontation in the second part of our thesis. Subsequently, the empirical prospective study restitutes the pertinence perceived of the emerging approach by 26 Human Resources Manager of companies located in Alsace. Using investigation per questionnaire supplemented by 14 in depth interviews, the findings of our empirical study suggest that as regards Human Resources Management, the monolithic model and the Gender Mainstreaming approach in HRM have to cohabit together to train “an eternal triangle” with the management of diversity

Abstract:
The carnivorous genus encompasses at least 120 species mainly distributed in SE Asia with Borneo and Sumatra recognized as endemism and diversity centers. They are vines whose leaves modified as pitchers exhibit an array of morphological and physicochemical adaptations that compete to the attraction, the capture and the digestion of arthropods. Besides the great morphological diversity the genus comprises a functional diversity exists: retentive mechanisms vary between species and in some species pitcher morphologies and functioning can also change throughout ontogeny. This thesis attempts to describe the trapping mechanisms and the ecology of some species to the evolutionary history of the diversification of the genus

Blake, Eric Michael. "Genre, Justice & Quentin Tarantino." Scholar Commons, 2015. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/5911.

Full text
Abstract:
The films of Quentin Tarantino have held a significant influence on modern cinema, and therefore on cinema studies. As such, studies on the social and philosophical implications of his work have appeared over the years, mostly in regards to content. However, with the exception of references to his use of cinematic violence, studies of his technique—i.e., his cinematic style—have been rare, and rarer still have been studies of the social implications that arise from the patterns of his style as well as those his subject matter. The following thesis seeks to use the concept of Auteur Theory—specifically, that Tarantino is the primary artist of the films directed by him—to propose that a specific artistic style conveys a specific worldview: namely, that the artistic choices made by the director, in content and technique, can and do convey a viewpoint regarding “real life” and the world. Specifically, this work will culminate in analyzing and determining tenants to be gleaned from the Tarantino canon regarding issues of justice, both on an individual and societal basis. With his focus on crime—again, both societal and individual—Tarantino makes commentary on societal breakdown; the audience’s emotional support (or lack thereof) for characters and their actions corresponds with identification, and therefore draws real-life parallels. Such refers to the concept of “Realism”, which will be discussed in detail. Further, Tarantino’s trend of recycling elements from prior films refers to artistic “Postmodernism”—use of “pastiche” and sampling to create a “new” work. The thesis will analyze the value and meaning of the major samplings in Tarantino’s films—particularly in regards to genre--and concludes that, far from a simple conglomeration, a Tarantino “Genre-Blender” forms a cohesive whole, oriented towards specific impact of the audience. From the above two issues of Realism and Postmodernism in art, and establishing the existence of a cohesive artistic vision in Tarantino’s work, this thesis identifies patterns in such that identify specific viewpoints on questions of “Good”, “Evil”, and “Justice”. Key to this is the dichotomy between objective principles and subjectivity in human interaction amid the applications of principles. Tarantino’s work conveys a belief in certain objective tenants; however, the applications that arise through interaction cause complications, arising through human limitations in perspective. The ultimate purpose of this study is to link studies of social implications of film to not merely content, but in choices in cinematic style. It is a contribution at once to studies of film and to studies of artistic theory (in particular Realism and Postmodernism), using both to analyze how a specific, popular, mainstream artist reflects a worldview through the sensibilities that are channeled in creating his works.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Much of literature is predicated upon the assumption that learning occurring inside the workplace is related to developing expertise associated with the tasks for which the individual is employed and has a background in. This research investigates those individuals who acquire expertise in other disciplines and how the application of that additional expertise changes and enhances the individual and the organisation. By combining perspectives across the disciplinary boundaries and developing multidisciplinary expertise, these individuals demonstrate better methods of achieving business objectives, leading to faster, more imaginative solutions, more frequently, and with significantly less effort. The literature review commenced with defining “multidisciplinary” before addressing communities that cluster around disciplines such as professional societies and Communities of Practice, Aspects of organisational, team and “learning by participation” (Ashton, 2004) literature were also considered. The study took an inductive approach using an ethnographical perspective to data collection and analysis to achieve its aim of determining the existence of multidisciplined individuals and how they acquire additional disciplines. The study used interviewing as its primary method yielding both qualitative and quantitative data from a cross sectional sample set inside a medium sized oil and gas consultancy offering technical and management advice. The disciplines inside the case organisation were mapped to ascertain boundaries where the richest learning opportunities lie. Measuring learning across the disciplines confirmed the existence of multidisciplined individuals with evidence pointing towards the integrated multidisciplined team being the ideal learning environment. The study was able to use Threshold Concepts (Meyer and Land, 2003) to demonstrate the multidisciplinary individual development process. Moreover, having examined the social interaction learning processes the potential negative impacts of Communities of Practice in encouraging this type of multidiscipline approach was highlighted. The study concluded that developing multidisciplined individuals was worthwhile but required organisations to be willing to provide the appropriate platform for such learning by more adventurous individuals who held the appropriate underlying abilities required by the additional discipline (s).

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis explores the role that film genre plays in the construction of, predominantly, Hollywood movie scores. It begins with the simple assumption that each genre has its own set of musical conventions, its signature "paradigm", with the result that Westerns sound different from Horror films, which sound different from Romantic Melodramas and so on. It demonstrates that while this is broadly speaking so, the true picture is more complex, the essentially hybrid nature of most Hollywood films on a narrative level resulting in scores that are similarly hybrid in nature. To begin with, the various functions of film music are described, and that of generic location is isolated as being of key importance. The concept of film genre is then discussed, with particular reference to the notion of hybridity. The substance and sources of the musical paradigms of the Western, Horror film and Romantic Melodrama are described in depth; specific aspects of the War Film, Gangster, Thriller and Action paradigms are addressed more briefly. The thesis concludes with a cue by cue analysis of John Barry's score for Dances with Wolves (1990), demonstrating that while the dominant paradigm the music draws on is indeed that of the Western, the score also incorporates elements from a variety of other generic paradigms, shifts in musical emphasis that are dictated by the changing requirements of the narrative. Film music is shown to be profoundly influenced by film genre, but that the use of generically specific music is as complex and nuanced as cinema's negotiation of genre at narrative level. While genres do indeed have signature musical paradigms, these do not exist discretely, but in constant tension with and relation to one another.

Abstract:

Abstract:
By convention epinician poetry claims to be both obligatory and truthful, yet in the intersection of obligation and truth lies a seeming paradox: the poet presents his poetry as commissioned by a patron but also claims to be unbiased enough to convey the truth. In Slater's interpretation Pindar reconciles this paradox by casting his relationship to the patron as one of guest-friendship: when he declares himself a guest-friend of the victor, he agrees to the obligation ‘a) not to be envious of his xenos and b) to speak well of him. The argumentation is: Xenia excludes envy, I am a xenos, therefore I am not envious and consequently praise honestly’. Slater observes that envy may foster bias against the patron, but the problem of pro-patron bias remains: does the poet's friendship with and obligation to his patron produce praise at the expense of truth?

This thesis examines automated genre classification in literature. The approach described uses text based comparison of book summaries to examine if word similarity is a feasible method for identifying genre types. Genres help users form impressions of what form a text will take. Knowing the genre of a literary work provides librarians, information scientists, and other users of a text collection with a summative guide to its form, its possible content, and what its members are about without having to peruse individual topic titles. This makes automatically generating genre labels a potentially useful tool in sorting unmarked text collections or searching the web. This thesis provides a brief overview of the problems faced by researchers wishing to automate genre classification as well as the current work in the field. My own methodology will also be discussed. I implemented two basic methods for labeling genre. The results collected using them will be covered, as well as future work and improvements to the project that I wish to implement.

Abstract:
In this study we explore automatic music genre recognition and classification of digital music. Music has always been a reflection of culture di erences and an influence in our society. Today’s digital content development triggered the massive use of digital music. Nowadays, digital music is manually labeled without following a universal taxonomy, thus, the labeling process to audio indexing is prone to errors. A human labeling will always be influenced by culture di erences, education, tastes, etc. Nonetheless, this indexing process is primordial to guarantee a correct organization of huge databases that contain thousands of music titles. In this study, our interest is about music genre organization. We propose a learning and classification methodology for automatic genre classification able to group several music samples based on their characteristics (this is achieved by the proposed learning process) as well as classify a new test music into the previously learned created groups(this is achieved by the proposed classification process). The learning method intends to group the music samples into di erent clusters only based on audio features and without any previous knowledge on the genre of the samples, and therefore it follows an unsupervised methodology. In addition a Model-Based approach is followed to generate clusters as we do not provide any information about the number of genres in the dataset. Features are related with rhythm analysis, timbre, melody, among others. In addition, Mahalanobis distance was used so that the classification method can deal with non-spherical clusters. The proposed learning method achieves a clustering accuracy of 55% when the dataset contains 11 di erent music genres: Blues, Classical, Country, Disco, Fado, Hiphop, Jazz, Metal,Pop, Reggae and Rock. The clustering accuracy improves significantly when the number of genres is reduced; with 4 genres (Classical, Fado, Metal and Reggae), we obtain an accuracy of 100%. As for the classification process, 82% of the submitted music samples were correctly classified.

Abstract:
This thesis work adresses text classification in relation to genre identification using different feature sets, with a focus on syntactic based features. We built our models by means of traditional machine learning algorithms, i.e. Naive Bayes, K-nearest neighbour, Support Vector Machine and Random Forest in order to predict the literary genre of books. We trained our models using as feature sets bag-of-words (BOW), bigrams, syntactic-based bigrams and emotional features, as well as combinations of features. Results obtained using the best features, i.e. BOW combined with bigrams based on syntactic relations between words, on the test set showed an enhancement in performance by 2% in F1-score over the baseline using BOW features, which translates into a positive impact of using syntactic information in the task of text classification.

Abstract:
Sexual identity reflects the process of identifications which it is based, without covering them completely. Submerged, these identifications drain deeper ail kinds of constructions, deconstructions and psychological changes that are revealed in the clinic of gender. Why go through the gender of sexual being ? What good will enter queer to think of sex, and its place in the landscape sex ? Why viral HIV contamination of some gay compensates sometimes an impossible sexuation ? What hormones absorbed for gender transformation they perform mental operations for the subject, then they guarantee him the same no change "real" sex ? At once object and process instance, gender is the fulcrum and the red wire innovations and impasses that question us on subjective responses made to the enigma of sexual difference in the sexes. These innovations are authentic creations psychic, which tend to open a possible creation of sex that remains to be defined. How the analyst and clinician work they do with gender in this clinic in constant transformation ? On what structural or processual can they bind their practices and elaborations? In rereading what "refusai of the feminine," the fetish, castration gender invites us there ? How to think from the disorder of gender, sexual difference, "sexual identity"?

Abstract:
* : headspace/gas chromatography/mass spectrometry.
