Full textThe Bible is everywhere in medieval texts, but the ways it was precisely involved in the writing of those texts are still very much to be investigated. This dissertation sheds light on its uses in letter-collections composed within the “Angevin empire” in the second half of the 12th century. A few “causes celebres” led clerics, the “masters of the Word”, to fight one another; the conflict between Thomas Becket and Henry II is the most famous of those. Referring to Scripture was a choice, and not a reflex; those who made that choice used their biblical references, and the exegesis that illuminated their meaning, to foster their social position and relationhips and to fight their political battles, sometimes in rather sophisticated ways. The texts that would soon become the utmost authorities for canon law, Gratian’s Decretum and popes’ decretals, had not yet acquired such status, making possible for Becket and his companion to use the Bible, in an unusual and striking way, as their main legal auctoritas

This research questions the canonical marginality of New Portuguese Letters (1972) and the inclusion of female authors in the Portuguese literary narrative, from the observation that the emergence of women authorship in Portugal was not the subject of critical readings that allowed grasping the literary procedures proposed by women's agency. The readings of the Portuguese literary canon that are guided by gynocritical methodologies of female works retrieval put New Portuguese letters as a literary milestone for the writers who start writing after 1972, paving the way for canon revisionist projects focused on gender category. Taking as its starting point the seventeenth-century letters of Mariana Alcoforado, the three Marias use a genre of autobiographical domain associated with the feminine expression to promote a dialogue with the society of the time. Sharing the credits for this collaborative work, they deliberately do not sign each text. Through these formal procedures, New Portuguese Letters implode categories of authorship and authority of the texts.

Full textThe dissertation for the degree of Art Criticism Science Candidate on speciality 17.00.03 – Music Art. – Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, Kyiv, 2004. In the thesis the Liturgy is reviewed as a complete phenomenon: the analysis of Liturgy as a musical genre is based on the orthodox doctrinal statement, all complex of church disciplines, and also on the es-sence and structure of the text and rite parties. In the dissertation it is offered to apply in relation to church music a concept "a genre canon", the definition of the term "a genre canon of Liturgy" is given. The hier-archical all-level structure of a Liturgy genre canon pattern is reviewed: the text and rite, three-level con-stitution of the contents plan (upper circle of a genre canon model), a complex of the universal character-istics intrinsic to a sacred music as a whole, and in particular to Liturgy, which makes an above-level of a genre canon. All dramaturgy levels receive a visual expression in the designed typological schemes in the thesis. In further, by activity with concrete samples of a genre, the schemes allow to reveal a measure of preservation of canonical tags. The analysis of the monody tradition Liturgy (znamenniy and kyiv chants) has determined canonical legitimacies of three levels of the expression plan (lower circle of a genre canon model). The built thus full model of a genre canon of a Liturgy is utilised as a peculiar matrix for matching with it Ukrainian and Russian composers’ Liturgies of the boundary of the XIX-XXth centuries with the purpose of detection and ratio normative and unnormative features, that has submitted a capability to make classification of the indicated works.

Full textThis thesis deals with the "canon" (in the sense of "list of authors considered the best within a given genre") of Greek and Latin poets in chapter 10.1 of the Institutio oratoria. In this treatise on rhetoric from the Flavian period, the canon-list derives from a literary and doctrinal tradition that selects certain authors for inclusion and evaluates them in relation to each other as reading material and models of eloquence. The present work describes the list of authors in chapter 10.1 both as the culmination of a diachronous process of establishing "canons", and, in synchrony, as an emanation of the cultural context specific to Flavian Rome. It questions the dynamic of how the list was established by explaining the motivations behind different operations of "listing" (selection - or exclusion - of authors, establishment of hierarchical relations between them, and critical evaluation of their qualities). It shows that the main critical influences on the different entries in the list are those of Cicero, Horace and Denys of Halicarnassus. In particular, its show that the dynamics of how the list was established is specific to each poetic genre. Accordingly, the present work is located at the confluence of the history of rhetoric and its doctrines, the history of philology, literary history, and the history of ancient literary criticism

Full textThe objective of this thesis is to study the American independent cinema from the point of view of the difference which it founds with the Hollywood cinema, as a line of flight which deteritorialises the latter, while creating for itself new forms of expression and content. That supposes to consider its relation with the Hollywood cinema as one between two plans of immanence emerged on the same level of individuation inside a broader plan of immanence, that of the North-American cinema. And, at the same time, it supposes to consider the difference between these under-plans in what it implies for a cinema-thought, namely a thought in terms of blocks of movement-images and time-images, facing the particular tensions which characterize the American society. Within this framework, the principal distinction that should be considered is that which passes between: on the one hand, the Hollywood cinema and its various ways (genres, organico-active régime) “of saving” the difference, by representing it; and of representing it by bringing it back to the requirements of only one great form in direct affinity with what I define as a dream of continuity and of coherence of American society; and, on the other hand, the independent cinema and its various ways of testifying to a rebellious core which deteritorialises the predetermined direction towards which the actions and the situations of the Hollywood cinema converge. What is beyond or below Hollywood organic representation and that the independent cinema tears off from the latter is a space of wandering and intensive distribution between forces of power and forces of resistance

Full textInherited retinal dystrophies (IRD), a group of incurable retinal pathologies, are associated with visual impairments due to a malfunction and/or degeneration of photoreceptors and/or retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). Significant progress in the field of gene therapy has allowed the development and the characterization of an innovative tool to treat IRD patients: recombinant adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) that carry and deliver therapeutic nucleic acids. However, due to the heterogenic nature of IRD, gene supplementation will not allow to treat all forms of IRD because: (i) the numbers of mutated genes are unknown according to the state of art; (ii) the dominant forms of IRD in which mutations lead to negative effects are not eligible; (iii) the limit of AAV packaging excludes large-sized mutated genes and (iv) this approach is only applicable when photoreceptors are still alive. To treat all IRD patients, a novel therapeutic approach, independently of the mutated gene and the disease kinetic is suitable: the optogene transfer (light-sensitive protein) to restore photosensitivity in neurodegenerative retina by converting surviving retinal cells into photosensors. The primary goal of my research was to promote and characterize adeno-associated virus type 2-(AAV2) transduction in retinal ganglion cells of dog and non-human primate. A second aim was to investigate the feasibility of AAV2-mediated optogenes transfer in retinal ganglion cells as a therapeutic approach to restore visual function in RPE65 deficient dog, a canine model of IRDs

Full textRecognition is essentially theorized by Aristotle about the tragedy. In comedy, recognition assumes only a secondary role. In both genres, it is essentially dependent on the final dénouement. In the eighteenth century, the authors have been interested in this dramatic principle which they have used massively in the new dramatic genres born in that century. Marivaux, Destouches, Nivelle de La Chaussée, Diderot, Mercier and Beaumarchais have all transposed the Aristotelian notion of anagnorisis in their plays. The differences with the theoretical basis enabled by Poetics and the place of recognition in classical theater are obvious. Being no longer necessarily linked to dénouement, recognition in the new comedies is concerned with all stages of the action. The authors claim the use of this dramatic principle despite the heavy bias against it, as well as they claim the use of the pathetic as a new way to explore drama. Recognition scenes are symptomatic of this desire to go beyond the strict division of gender, as they reflect new aspirations and new pathways for drama to explore. They provide information on the renewal of forms and new kinds of challenges facing the new genres, while embodying the Enlightenment project aiming, above all, to create a relationship that is both intimate and solid with the viewer. Now it is the efficiency of the dramatic effect that conditions the success of new genres and the efficient transmission of the moral, philosophical and political messages which recognition that tries to convey

Full textThis study aims at analysing the writing of history through a corpus of eight novels, published in Quebec between 1980 and 1990. The corpus is comprised of La Tribu and Les Plaines à l’envers by F. Barcelo, of Louis Caron’s trilogy Fils de la liberté, of Premier jardin by Anne Hébert, of La Maison Trestler ou le 8ème jour d’Amérique by Madeleine Ouellette-Michalska’s and of Un dernier blues pour Octobre by Pierre Turgeon. While English distinguishes « history » from « story », French uses the single term « histoire ». If that polysemy may cause confusion, it may also generate a reflection, just as the one underlying this analysis: How does a story tell history? How have stories contributed to the rewriting of Quebec’s plural history in the 1980s? Answering these questions will require three main developments. The first part will be an attempt to explain and understand the fraternal yet fratricidal relationship between literature and history, two disciplines which became distinct in the 19th century. Moreover, it proposes a reflection on the historical novel and historical fiction. The second part will be devoted to the comparative study of the historical and narrative discourses within the constituent novels of the corpus. And finally, in a third part, our reflection will lead us to consider Quebec’s poetics, in order to show how –by rewriting memory– those texts have participated in creating Quebec’s collective identity at the very end of the 20th century
Cormier, Marie Odile. "Le roman sentimental antillais : appropriation du canon et didactisme." Thèse, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/3805.
Full textThe sentimental novel is one of the most read, translated and accessible literary genres. Considering its sales rating, its frivolous reputation seems to be a misleading one. Indeed, in the Caribbean, the overall presence and reception of the novels is an indicator of its phenomenal popularity. We consider that the following aspects of the Caribbean sentimental novel are the most significant ones. Firstly, we underline that the specificity of the narrative patterns of these novels is due to its singularity vis-à-vis the canonical sentimental novel. Secondly, these novels tend to create a very strong sense of nationhood for the readers which are generated by a careful depiction of the everyday life. These previous aspects allow us to underscore the fact that the studied novels interact with the Caribbean social-cultural discourse while insisting on the topic of the female condition. This research brings to light the fact that the appropriation of the novelistic schemes as well as the didactic within allows to consider the Caribbean sentimental novel as a part of the institutionally recognized literary productions. Finally, our essay demonstrates that the novels of these “female writers” contribute to the consolidation of the national identity.
