Abstract:
I attempt to capture the simple and fleeting beauty of Washington, DC, before it folds into time. In my representational paintings and monotypes, I want to convey the elegance and serenity of the streets, cars, pedestrians, and the majestic buildings of our nation’s capital. As a native Washingtonian, I’ve always admired the view of the city from across the Potomac River, from sunrise to sunset. I want to share these views and these experiences of my daily life with the viewer.

Michael, Jason. "Lynn Riggs: Forgotten Genius." VCU Scholars Compass, 2014. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/3351.

Full text
Abstract:
Lynn Riggs was an early to mid-20th century Native American playwright who wrote twenty-four full length plays, his sole enduring success being Green Grow the Lilacs, the play upon which the musical Oklahoma! is based. For much of the early part of Riggs’s career, he was considered a uniquely pioneering and promising playwright, cited in competition with Eugene O’Neill as vying for the position of best playwright of their age. But while O’Neill has gone on to be considered America’s Greatest Playwright, the life and works of Lynn Riggs, save for his contribution to Rodgers and Hammerstein, have gone largely forgotten and unexamined. It is the purpose of my paper to 1) provide a biographical sketch of the man, 2) give an overview of several major themes that run through his work, and 3) provide some theory and analysis as to why the promise of this young and distinctly Native American voice was never adequately fulfilled in his lifetime. I will attempt to argue that a combination of circumstances including Riggs’s poor home life, his at times misogynistic and racist points of view, America’s inability to see Native Americans as other than caricatures and, quite simply, bad luck put much of Riggs’s writing on a fast track to failure and contemporary obscurity.

Abstract:
Fragmented and heterogenous space of Mariánské náměstí needs a new unifying element that will not compete with its surroundings, and yet not blindly respectful. It will simply stand there and in time become a natural part of the area. Rough massive volumes with minimum of windows boldly face surrounding urban blocks. Its dynamic facades emphasize the opennes and chaos of the area. Rough raw boulders with single elegant crystal inserted amongst them. Like a diamond amongst coal. It is interconnected through bridges. People and life flows through the whole structure.

Abstract:
České Budějovice struggles with unsuitable spaces for the Theatre and the Philharmonic. It is also confronted with urbanistic challenges of underused public spaces. This diploma thesis sets out to remedy these challenges and offer a possible solution through the design of Platform of live arts – opera and philharmonic halls at Mariánské náměstí. I approach this problematic area with an effort of creating a distinctive feature, that propagates new spatial relationships and changes the existing perception of space. The center of gravity, two performance halls, are placed in the utmost tip of the plot in confrontation with historical skyline of the old city. Counterweight of this expansive volume is a park, theatrical gardens at the opposite and. The idea is to preserve quality free space around which similar institutions might find their place in the future, thus creating a cultural oasis.

Abstract:
China is a high speed developing country during the past 40 years. However, when China became better and better, there were a lot of issues being left, such as boomed populations, urban village emerging, social media issues and lack of human spirit. All of these issues occurred in the modern urban context, which made the "Loci Genius" lose. So how could architects reconstruct and conserve the "Genius Loci." I try to build the temple for people in the high dense city, which help people to find and think for themselves, to keep peaceful. I believe people and space could build the journey to the pilgrimage. The Buddha joss will not be made in the temple, but be established in every visitor's mind finally.

Abstract:
The target of this thesis is to explain the Travelling Salesman Problem and also create a special program, which will be able to make calculations using the heuristics GENIUS. The Travelling Salesman Problem will be described from two different points of view. The first one is the historical description of the idea of the Travelling Salesman Problem and later will be the problem will be described with some of the very wide number of the calculation methods. For the explanation of the methods, in the thesis there has been chosen some of the algorithms which belong to that methods. The heuristics and also the exact algorithms will be explained. The focus of this thesis is on the heuristics called GENIUS and also in the creation of the program which can calculate it. The program works first with the GENI algorithm and after that it works with US post-optimization algorithm. The program will be described from the point of view of the user and the manual will be written as well. The program will be tested on two different examples and will be compared with the exact algorithm.

Morrison, R. J. H. "Thomas de Quincey : the strands of genius." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26794.

Full text
Abstract:
Several critics have sought to identify the central features in the multiplicity of Thomas De Quincey's work. J. Hillis Miller speaks of the 'common essence', Robert Maniquis of 'those essential patterns', Edmund Baxter of 'the key themes which, to my mind, make of De Quincey's disparate works a unified whole.' Yet despite their merits, these critical deliberation have not revealed the essential De Quincey. De Quincey's genius is constituted in four distinct elements. One: the periodical writer. De Quincey never sat down to write anything without one eye fixed firmly on the monthly magazine audiences he was expected to entertain and enlighten. It was his job to provoke an argument, debunk a trend, relate an amusing anecdote, interpret an idea. Two: the logician. De Quincey's analytical bent is the primary influence on his work as a literary critic and a detective and it serves him extremely well as a populariser, especially of economics. The same bent leads De Quincey to insist on precision in the use of language. Even highly imaginative works like Suspiria are characterised by his love of the analytical. Three: the disciple. Wordsworth is everywhere in the writings of De Quincey. At the same time Wordsworth respected De Quincey's literary abilities and often sought to exploit them. Yet Wordsworth and De Quincey are two strikingly different writers. The most critical difference between the two is the way in which they depict the guilt and fear of their childhood experience. Four: the rhetorician. De Quincey championed the 'literature of power' as a moral force which would galvanise and enliven the energies of man's heart. In the vast majority of his essays he crafts a mellifluous and pliant prose. But in works of 'impassioned prose' like the Confessions Trilogy he produces his own form of 'power' in order to try and beat back the blight of modern industrial advance. These four elements make his work instantly identifiable: they are the fundamental and indelible strands from which he weaves the endless variety of his writing, the 'fixed predetermined centres' around which gather 'whatever heterogeneous elements ... may have accumulated from without'.

Abstract:
Genius loci has been described as "the spirit of place". The main interest in considering an urban monastery program is to create a place that embodies the spirit and culture of Tibetan Buddhism in the context of urban Washington, D.C. Given Tibet's unique culture that has developed over centuries without much Western influence, and it recent history of Chinese rule, religious persecution and infiltration of its language, culture and environment, the challenge of this program is to represent the traditions of Tibetan Buddhism in a modern language of architecture.

Ebadi, Solmaz, and Mirja Johansson. "Music File Sharing : Genius Technology or Copyright Infringement?" Thesis, Jönköping University, JIBS, Commercial Law, 2009. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-7598.

Full text
Abstract:

Today’s technology of music file sharing in peer-to-peer networks is genius. Peer-to-peer are networks composed of several computers enabling files to be shared among users. A substantial part of the files shared constitute unlawful copies; uploading and downloading of such files infringes copyright legislation. File sharing through peer-to-peer networks is therefore both a genius technology and a copyright infringement.

Peer-to-peer technology has been subject to heavy debate in media, both nationally and internationally. The issue of illegal downloads of music is an international dilemma since music is a global commodity. Sweden has been accused of being file sharers’ haven by organisations such as the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Internet access and broadband capacity is very high in Sweden, which is a reason why many Swedes engage in file sharing. The Swedish company, The Pirate Bay, is the creator of one of the most popular file sharing websites in the world, using the BitTorrent application. The website offers free downloading of inter alia music, films and software. Like most peer-to-peer networks the Pirate Bay website includes copyrighted material, which often is published without the consent of copyright holders. As a result The Pirate Bay is facing a lawsuit on behalf of numerous organisations and companies in the music and film industry.

The Pirate Bay is accused of contributory infringement and of preparation to commit a copyright infringement according to the Swedish Copyright Act (SwCA).  Contrary to the American copyright legislation, the SwCA does not contain any explicit provisions regarding contributory infringement. The SwCA refers to the Swedish Criminal Code, which states that preparation to copyright infringement and contributing to such infringement is illegal and punishable. There is currently a lack of Swedish case law regarding copyright infringement and there are no cases concerning contributory infringement. One reason is that the field of law is constantly changing; the copyright legislation is adjusted to the technological developments. The lack of case law causes unpredictability of the SwCA, which may be harmful to the rule of law. International organisations, such as the RIAA, consider the SwCA to be somewhat ineffective and that it needs to be amended in order to uphold the fundamental purpose of copyright.

Copyright is a partly harmonised area of law from a global perspective. However, since the Internet and file sharing through peer-to-peer networks is an international phenomenon, copyright legislation needs further harmonisation internationally. At the time there is an ongoing process of implementing the European Union (EU) Enforcement Directive into the SwCA, which grants greater rights to copyright holders. The Directive contains provisions that simplify the process of taking action against an alleged infringer, which may in the long run increase the amount of case law in Sweden. At the same time the implementation of the Enforcement Directive has been criticised as being too far reaching and intruding people’s privacy.

File sharing through peer-to-peer networks benefits consumers by offering easy access to a wide range of music for a low cost, at the same time enabling artists to reach out to a larger audience. Consumers are vital for the music industry, since they purchase the music. However, the fundamental aim of copyright is to reward copyright holders and function as an incentive to encourage creativity. Consequently, without economic rights the incentive to create is forfeit and music production might decrease. Even if the justification of copyright is primarily to protect creators of a work, it is also essential to emphasise the consumer aspect. Therefore it is of importance to balance the interests of all parties involved.

In order to uphold the purpose of copyright and interests of the general public, it is necessary to promote and develop more legal file sharing alternatives. Music in digital formats has to some extent replaced the traditional Compact Disc (CD) format. Therefore the music industry must cooperate with among others Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in order to embrace the digital developments of music and offer better solutions to consumers. Simultaneously, there is a lack of knowledge of copyright among the Swedish population, which is why more education is required. In conclusion, advertisement and education could decrease illegal file sharing and enhance all the parties’ interests.

McConnell, Rachel. "Pierre Paul Prud'hon and the Genius of Allegory." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Humanities, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/5016.

Full text
Abstract:
Pierre Paul Prud’hon (1758-1823) lived and worked as an artist during the last years of the French Monarchy, the Revolution, the Republic, the Empire and finally the Restoration. He mostly worked with allegory, setting him apart from other artists at the time, such as Jacques Louis David. While Prud’hon was a significant artist in his own time, he is only just being rehabilitated today. In this thesis I trace Prud’hon’s artistic career as an allegorical painter through the different governments, examining thematically his different types of allegories, from the moral to the political. In particular, the context of allegory is examined, including how Prud’hon approaches allegory and criticism and interpretation of his use of allegory. This examination of Prud’hon highlights what was so unusual about Prud’hon’s art – primarily his use, with reasonable success, of allegory. This alone makes it clear that he should be held in higher regard by today’s art historians.

Abstract:

This study examined leaders’ roles in fostering collective genius innovation within one private elementary school, including managing the paradoxes of innovation. Based on content analysis of eleven participants, this study found that teamwork, clear student learning outcomes emphasizing individualized learning, design thinking, and a growth mindset, all impacted willingness to innovate. To develop conditions for collective genius, leaders again focus on teamwork as well as being relational. In terms of their management of the six innovative paradoxes, the school leaders tend to balance their affirmation of the individual and the group, support staff and parents, focus on experimentation and learning, improvisation, patience, and bottom-up initiatives.

Maglio, Rosetta, and Julia Osswald. "Utredning av Genius 2-termometrar på Södersjukhusets vuxenakut." Thesis, KTH, Medicinteknik och hälsosystem, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-298437.

Full text
Abstract:
The investigation was done at Södersjukhuset’s emergency department where two types of tympanic thermometers were investigated. Genius 2 from Philips, which is connected to a patient monitor called IntelliVue and ThermoScan PRO 6000 from Braun, which is mobile. The investigation was done at the request of Södersjukhuset because the staff at the emergency department considered Genius 2 not to be reliable. The intent of the investigation was to determine the cause of Genius 2’s measurement uncertainty and to understand what the general opinion of the thermometer is among the employees.   The investigation began with interviews with nurses and assistant nurses. The goal was to get the general opinion and thereafter investigate the problems using calibrations and thermometer tests. After the interviews, all thermometers that were intended for the tests were calibrated. The calibrations were done to ensure that only working thermometers were included in the tests. The first thermometer test was intended to investigate the variation within and between the Genius 2 and ThermoScan PRO 6000 thermometers. The subjects and the users were constant while the thermometers were varied. The second thermometer test was intended to investigate whether the handling of the thermometers affected the measured values. In this test, the subjects, a Genius 2 thermometer and a ThermoScan PRO 6000 thermometer stayed the same while the user was varied. The last part of the investigation was intended to investigate whether the calibration of the Genius 2 thermometers was consistent after one month.  The results showed that Genius 2 had greater variation within and between the thermometers, compared to ThermoScan PRO 6000. However, the variation was not so great that it affects patient safety. The results also showed that the handling of the thermometers affects the results and that part of the staff were able to execute the temperature measurements in a more comfortable way for the patient. This gave measured values that were considered to be more accurate. The results showed that 20% of the thermometers that had previously undergone calibration failed when the calibration was redone a month later. This means that the Genius 2 thermometer does not meet the existing requirements to ensure that it functions properly. Not all thermometers were included in the investigation which is why our recommendation is to further investigate the problems.

Dunst, Maura. ""Such genius as hers" : music in New Woman fiction." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2013. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/46493/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines music and its relationship to gender and the related social commentary woven throughout New Woman writing, putting forth the New Woman musician figure for consideration. In contrast to the male-dominated world of Victorian music, New Woman fiction is rife with women who not only wish to pursue music, but are brilliantly talented musicians and composers themselves. These women are the focal point of this thesis. The primary texts used are Kate Chopin’s The Awakening (1899); Sarah Grand’s Ideala (1888), The Heavenly Twins (1893), and The Beth Book (1897); George Egerton’s Keynotes (1893), Discords (1894), Symphonies (1897), and Fantasias (1898); George Moore’s Evelyn Innes (1898) and Sister Teresa (1901); and Mona Caird’s The Daughters of Danaus (1894); with George du Maurier’s Trilby (1894) (and, to a lesser extent, the Moore texts) offered in contrast to the foregoing. This thesis seeks to answer the following question: what is music’s function in New Woman fiction, and to what end? Each chapter offers an answer to this question using different areas of women’s musicianship: stifled musicians, performers, composers, and auditors. In addition, the penultimate chapter works toward a theory of “melopoetic composition,” or the blending of literary and musical composition, and discusses the role of mirror neurons in creating a unique reading experience which is visual, aural, and neural. Ultimately, this thesis illustrates that the sister arts of music and literature were woven together by the sisterhood of the New Woman writers, who used fiction as a medium through which to assert their multi-layered creative capabilities.

Abstract:
The following dissertation is based on the comprehensive study of the Minho region, and the transformation process of the wine producing landscapes and their supporting architectures. As a consequence of this new reality, the structures supporting the cultivation practiced in the region, ended up losing part of their function, gradually leading to their ruin. The relationship between the House and the Farmland has always made an important contribution to the population’s livelihood, forming over time a set of unique characteristics created by the need for constant adaptation. With the introduction of technology in the preparation of the land and the subsequent planting of a crop, the speed of execution of the work, has meant that cultural principles essential to the current agricultural landscape, have been forgotten. Calvos, a place with a historical past linked to the cultivation of vines, has currently undergone profound changes to answer to the needs of the work done by mechanization. The existence of a set of three ruins forgotten by the intense vegetation leads us to a current problem. Each project intends to re-establish the essence of the place with the creation of a set of spaces using different mechanisms (Architecture, color, light, memory, lightness) and mainly the use of Nature as an element of valorization of the whole.

Abstract:
During our university studies we learned about the importance of play for children'sdevelopment. During play children practice many elements, such as social andcommunication skills and they learn easier. This because play is fun and they use theirimagination and creativity to develop their play, creating new games - this isimportant for their learning and development. Therefore, we know that play is anexcellent teaching tool, but I wonder what do pedagogues think of play?I also wonder what factors influence children's play and how important the "oldfashionedplay" or play without modern toys such as electronic toys or gadgets are forchildren's development? Therefore, I travelled to a small village in India, where there is no modern technology,to carry out this study about play. Over the course of ten days I observed childrenplaying and interviewed three teachers in a private school to study how thecircumstances make children create their own toys to play with, and how importantthis play and these toys are for the children's' lives and development. As a result ofthis study I came to the conclusion that economic, religious, cultural and genderfactors influence children's play in this village in India. Creating their own toysdevelops children´s creativity and fine motor skills, and helps them socialize whilethey are teaching each other how to create the toy. In a multicultural society like ours in Sweden, we have many first- and secondgenerationimmigrants in our schools, therefore it is important to learn and understandhow other cultures play and how we as pedagogues see and adopt this kind of playand different games to teach. In this study I want to show another perspective of playto understand our own play in Sweden. I believe that this multicultural perspectivewill only enrich our profession.

Radcliff, Matthew Robert. "The Romantic Genius of Einstein and the Science Essay Film." Thesis, Montana State University, 2006. http://etd.lib.montana.edu/etd/2006/radcliff/RadcliffM1206.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
The image of Einstein as a scientific genius, a talent so elevated it can spill over the boundaries between science and art, requires the assumption that art and science are not simply different fields of knowledge, but are polar opposites. Despite two centuries of effort, the debate on the relationship of art and science is far from resolved; the notion that they are exclusive of each other is even less established. However, there remains a tendency to treat art and science as the two extremes of a linear scale of talent. Only an exceptional person, therefore, can straddle the line between them. The traditional science documentary aggravates this separation. Condensing the time and effort involved, through re-enactments of selected experiments, neglects the artisanal, hands-on nature of science. By spotlighting one (or at most a handful) of scientists as special, and condensing a large body of work into a small number of significant events, the documentaries give the impression that creativity in science is a rare occurrence. A new model of science film, based on the personal essay that is prominent in popular science writing (e.g., the essays of Alan Lightman), is proposed to ease the tension between art and science. The essay film, combining elements of the documentary and the personal art film, provides the opportunity to illustrate science as an inherently creative act relevant to all people.

Reddick, Yvonne J. "The genius of the stream : Ted Hughes and fluvial influence." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2012. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/57454/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis engages with Harold Bloom’s theories of poetic influence, beginning with an examination of influence, both literary and fluvial, in Anglophone poetry. The first chapter details the canon of English river-writing, ranging from Spenser’s Prothalamion, Drayton’s Polyolbion, Milton’s ‘Lycidas’ and Pope’s The Dunciad to Wordsworth’s ‘Sonnet XXXVI’ and Eliot’s The Waste Land. I examine Hughes’s reading of these texts as an undergraduate, and introduce the ways in which he engages with them in his poetry. The second chapter demonstrates how Hughes’s work owes a poetic debt to three major writers who lived through the First World War. Hughes’s own father fought in the First World War, and I question whether or not the relationship between Hughes and these ‘father figures’ is Bloomian. Eliot mentored Hughes at Faber & Faber, and the influence of The Waste Land (1922) on Hughes’s river-poetry was seminal. Williamson was a war veteran, and his Tarka the Otter is the source of many tributes by Hughes, from newspaper articles to eulogies. Hughes cites Tarka as having formed his ambition to write for himself. Graves, another war veteran, greatly influenced Hughes via his reading of The White Goddess. In the third chapter, following the methodology of Heather Clark’s 2011 study The Grief of Influence, I trace the ways in which Plath’s work shaped the manuscript drafts of Hughes’s poetry, especially River. I argue that the influence of such writing about water as ‘Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams’ and ‘Ocean 1212W’ was so seminal as to have to be edited out of Hughes’s work. There follows a very detailed chronological appraisal of Plath’s impact on Hughes’s manuscript drafts from the Emory archive. In the fourth chapter, by examining letters in the British Library, I discuss the ways in which the publication of River was a bold statement for the preservation of British rivers. Although his project was not entirely successful, I examine how Hughes’s bids to secure funding from British Gas for his project were motivated by his environmental activism. I also demonstrate how the publication of this book fits into the bigger picture of his campaigns for water quality. The fifth chapter shows how Hughes and Seamus Heaney influenced each other, how Hughes and his son Nicholas Hughes drew ideas from each other’s work, and how Hughes has influenced Alice Oswald. There are elements of a Bloomian ‘family romance’ here, but I largely reject a Bloomian reading by demonstrating that Heaney and Hughes’s friendship, and Nicholas and Ted’s close bond, do not support Bloom’s theories.

Ratcliffe, Jeremy H. "The genius loci of crime : revealing associations in time and space." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 1999. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/11444/.

Full text
Abstract:
In most police services the only spatial and temporal analysis of crime was conducted until recently by statisticians at the force headquarters, with little or no regard for any short term or localised patterns of crime. In recent years there has been a move towards a more decentralised, proactive style of British policing focused at the police divisional and community level. This has left an intelligence void where force level analysis techniques are neither appropriate nor subtle enough to elicit any meaningful information at a local level from the mass of crime data generated within the police service. This thesis reveals patterns in community level crime which have not been recognised previously using traditional techniques in spatial and temporal investigation which tend to lack the necessary analytical ability. Current policing considerations are recognised and the thesis concentrates on three aspects of police crime concern: accurate temporal analysis, repeat victimisation, and the identification of hotspots. A number of new techniques are presented which are designed with the needs of a crime analyst at a divisional police station in mind, an individual who has until now lacked the necessary analytical tools to perform the role effectively.

Fitzsimons, Edward James. "G. W. F. Hegel and the myth of total cinematic genius." Thesis, Manchester Metropolitan University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.576712.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the early 1950s the concept of the individual cinematic genius has been widely accepted as a legitimate status of the successful auteur, and its most renowned advocates have been Cahiers du Cinema of that period - 'the age of the auteur'. Despite being historically questioned and refuted by the other arts of the last century the concept of the genius auteur has survived the 'linguistic turn' of the 1960s and 1970s, and has since been maintained most prominently in the figure of Alfred Hitchcock. The thesis discusses the ways in which historical constructions of genius have been justified by outlining how the concept itself has evolved from notions of divinity prior to the invention of cinema as an art form, to the politicized terms of its contemporary use. Of particular import to this study is Cahiers du Cinema's early justification of cinematic genius that the thesis proves reducible to their understanding of G. W. F. Hegel's philosophy. However, developing an understanding of Hegel' s philosophical texts only serves to further undermine the concept of individual genius revealing a paradox, in that Hegel himself refuted the idea of the singular divinely gifted individual in his Phenomenology of Spirit 1807. The thesis' in-depth analysis of the relationship between genius, cinema and philosophy, through the new lens of Film-Philosophy, shows the concept of the genius auteur to be in many ways inconsistent with the source of its original philosophical justification in Hegel; and incompatible with the very collective nature of a true science of knowledge. In response to this the thesis illustrates the suitability of the critical tenets of Film- Philosophy in confirming the hypothesis that film can philosophise, and can do so autonomously in the sense that it already holds the philosophical ideas within its final product. In investigating the 'myth of total cinematic genius' from this Hegelian perspective against a variety of ancient and historical cultures and beliefs, the thesis' initial study develops the sense in which the signifier genius has evolved from its etymological roots and focuses on its subsequent politicisations. The second study is a more complex development of the ways in which Hegel's concepts of logic and teleology have been historically appropriated into a language of genius associated with the auteur forming the necessary grounds to conduct a critique of Cahiers du Cinema of the 1950s. Studying these early historical expressions of the journal in this larger context develops a more objective understanding of their subjective ideas of the auteur, their practice, their product, as theoretically restrictive on these terms, and their critical appraisals understood in the wider objective context of Absolute Spirit, the thesis returns to 'historical' film discourse on these more interrogative terms of political justification and philosophical misrecognition. On the basis of this revised understanding of Hegel' s oeuvre and its central concepts of Absolute Knowledge and Absolute Spirit, the third study drawing on Hitchcock as the model auteur fully illustrates the autonomy of the philosophical idea in the moving image and thereby relegates the work of the auteur genius to historical forces in a final confirmation of a philosophizing film. The final case study in illustration of this idea of an unconscious transference of the philosophical idea in the moving image in many ways explains how genius has been displaced onto the flesh and blood film-maker by focusing on one individual shot from Hitchcock's 'signature film' Rear Window 1954. Returning to this film and the critical and philosophical climate in which it couched with the hindsight of Film-Philosophy proves a successful means of reducing the genius, film and Hitchcock's film to products of a systematising culture of film and philosophical study that has traditionally discussed the film in the immediacy of their understanding of Hegelianism and cinema. As such, the thesis purports the subsequent necessity to return, not only to the film, shot or sequence in question, but also taking into account the practices and methods of analysis pertaining to how these historical objects have been understood and embalmed in this language of genius. This outline serves to obviate the necessity for a more detailed and measured focus on how these cultural objects have been reduced entirely to the individual under the auspices of the auteur, as well as the ways in which Hegelian philosophy had become a formal and misappropriated endorsement of the auteur genius. Referencing this particular period of the journal and the philosophical climate in which it is couched, the evidence formulated in this thesis will be used to illustrate a final Hegelian understanding of film and cinema that will expand our understanding of authorship and the experimental, as well as developing the ways in which this approach can cause us to rethink film history with a particular emphasis on its inherited notions of cinematic genius.

Full text
Abstract:
William S. Burroughs challenges each reader of Naked Lunch to make meaning of its convoluted pages.  This project explores the two crucial keys to fuller understanding of his groundbreaking literary work:   Logic and Ethics. In "Beating the Dead Horse: Deconstructing the Junk Genius of Naked Lunch," I illustrate Burroughs\' means of exposing the flawed binaries that undergird the Aristotelian Logic of language.  In Naked Lunch, the author bares the slippery nature of any such Logical language, whereby each word comes with a range of denotations and connotations, all of which shift constantly according to a concomitantly shifting context.  This project primarily explores Burroughs\' means of subverting traditional logic by exposing the flaws that riddle the foundations of language, essentially undermining the syllogistic system via the system (essentially fashioning a word virus/vaccine chain). I also analyze the Ethical grounding of Naked Lunch, which grows directly from Burroughs\' logical/linguistic subversions.  Namely, Burroughs sought to expose the problems with the common Utilitarian Ethic that ultimately pushes the individual to the margins while subsuming the individual within the group (a symptom of the binary logical/linguistic systems that pervade thought and encourages othering).  This article provides substantial evidence that links Burroughs\' ethical equations directly from his Algebra of Need to Jeremy Bentham\'s Hedonistic Calculus.

Abstract:
This paper covers the development of the chemical weapons division founded by Ishii Shiro, and discusses the horrible experimentation that was done by the Japanese. These experiments have been a source of controversy. The Chinese feel the Japanese should acknowledge these as war crimes. When the Japanese left Manchuria, they left the world’s largest chemical waste dump behind, and even to this day the government refuses to admit the actions of Unit 731. The information on biological warfare that the Japanese discovered during the experimentation in China later was used as a negotiation tool with the United States to secure their freedom and gain immunity from prosecution for General Ishii Shiro and his men. This paper will show the evolution of Japanese biological warfare during WWII using research obtained from a wide range of documents, books, newspapers, and journal articles, as well as documents found at the National Archives.

Abstract:
There is an increasing awareness among landscape architects and other designers that although it is axiomatic that environmental concerns play a major role in design, it is also necessary to identify and address the issues of place that form a vital part of the well-being of the whole person. One major issue is that of genius loci. the spirit of place. The object of this project is to describe some of the elements that go to make up the spirit of place that is unique to Indiana. "The stage we're at in Indiana, I don't think we have a real 'Indiana' landscape that has sifted out, I think we're still stretching our wings and discovering what we have here." (Eric Ernstberger, Indiana Landscape Architect.)The project consists of four sections:1. Investigation into the history of and writings on contextualism and regionalism both in general and in relation to the Midwest of the USA in particular.2. A. Preference survey of Indiana residents taken from an opportunity sample of 180 residents in three areas of the State, administered by interview. Abstract:
O algoritmo proposto, denominado GENIUS, apresentou desempenho relevante e baixa complexidade.
One of the most important components of network telecommunications is the router. Modern routers employ input-queued crossbar switches that require sophisticated scheduling techniques for packet transmission. The architecture of switches with input queues requires an scheduling process that establishes the transfer of packets from input to output ports. The performance of router depends of the scheduling algorithm, considering its throughput and complexity. In this work we survey the most relevant theoretical scheduling algorithms and propose a scheduling approach using genetic algorithms. We developed a simulator of discrete events for testing of schedulers performance. The proposed algorithm, called GENIUS, presents relevant performance and low complexity.
