O presente estudo dedica-se a análise da estrutura semântica e da polissemia do genitivo de posse em português. Tendo em vista análises da posse genitiva em termos de metáfora conceptual (NIKIFORIDOU, 1991; LANGACKER 1991) e da mereologia estrutural (LYONS, 1980), consideramos o problema da insuficiência de tais argumentos para a descrição da polissemia da posse. Como alternativa teórica e descritiva, postula-se que as construções de genitivo correspondam a padrões metonímicos associados a domínios de contiguidade (PEIRSMAN GEERAERTS, 2006), seja via transformação entre esquemas imagéticos de experiências contíguas, seja pelo mapeamento metafórico entre domínios de contiguidade. ---DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.31513/linguistica.2019.v15n2a21413

Busca-se neste artigo um deslocamento teórico da tradução dos antropólogos para a tradução dos nativos, destacando neste trânsito diferenças menos nos pontos de partida ou de eventual chegada que nas modalidades de aproximação. O marco etnográfico desta escolha é configurado por imagens de pensamento dos Waiwai, em particular da comunidade de Jatapuzinho (RR), onde realizei minhas pesquisas de campo. Constelações culturais tais como a busca dos Waiwai pelos 'povos não-vistos' (enîhni komo), sua noção de 'alma-olho' (yewru yekatî) ou seus rituais em relação a diferentes animais e seus respectivos 'donos' ou 'donos-de-roupas' (ponoyosomo) constituem elaborações ou ensaios (sem deixar de lado as conotações reflexivas) sobre a tradução. Sua descrição motiva a introdução de conceitos como a 'ressonância', a 'redundância' e a 'repetição' (aquela que gera diferenças) e deixa entrever pautas culturais maiores como o 'rodeio' e a 'impropriedade'. A atenção às variações e oscilações do suposto original através de suas diferentes versões se conecta com posições da atual reflexão interdisciplinar sobre a tradução. Entre elas as idéias de Walter Benjamin em torno da sobrevivência do original através da tradução; os efeitos de transformação através da tradução apontados por Jacques Derrida; e a viabilidade, segundo Talal Asad, de traduções culturais que, avançando por outros registros, transbordam o discurso etnográfico clássico. Estas convergências induzem a questionar em que medida a concepção de tradução está ligada à concepção de relação e em que medida uma pode ser repensada a partir da outra.

La construcción de genitivo en inglés [NP’s + N] puede ser interpretada de diversas maneras atendiendo no solo a factores léxicos y semánticos, sino también pragmáticos. El objetivo principal de este estudio es plantear que el genitivo agente (John’s claim) es más habitual en inglés que el de posesión (John’s car), a pesar de lo que tradicionalmente se mantiene. El estudio demuestra este hecho analizando ejemplos de dos corpus de lengua escrita: el Brown y el Lobtag. Además de relacionar el genitivo agente con el proceso de nominalización, se ofrece una posible explicación de la frecuencia de esta interpretación semántica.

El presente estudio ofrece una visión diacrónica de algunas de las construcciones propias del elativo árabe, partiendo de las etapas tempranas del árabe clásico. Desde entonces, el elativo ha experimentado un desarrollo notable y ha producido varios usos sintácticos desconocidos para los gramáticos árabes clásicos. Especialmente interesante es la evolución histórica y las relaciones semánticas entre las tres estructuras que expresan habitualmente la noción del superlativo en el árabe escrito moderno: 1) elativo + sustantivo singular indeterminado en genitivo (akbaru madīnatin), 2) elativo + sustantivo ñural determinado en genitivo (akbaru l-muduni), y 3) elativo usado como atributo de un sustantivo determinado (al-madīnatu l-akbaru), todas ellas traducibles como “la ciudad más grande”, pero diferentes entre sí en ciertos aspectos. Se puede observar una tendencia a crear simetrías en el sistema sintáctico del elativo como atributo adjetival, por una parte, y, por otra parte, la forma de expresar una gradación comparativo - superlativo mediante la misma estructura sintáctica (atribución adjuetival) que solo difiere en cuanto a la (in)determinación. Además, una estructura que solo se documenta de forma marginal en árabe clásico, es decir, los elativos de esquema C1uC2C3ā + sustantivo plural en genitive, pasa a ser usado de forma frecuente en el árabe escrito moderno. El plural que le corresponde, C1uC2C3āayāt, es una innovación cuya expansión, particularmente en el lenguaje periodístico, se puede atribuir a la tendencia a la desambiguación.

A tese principal deste artigo é que se nos perguntarmos pela referência do conceito “alienação”, nos encontraremos na posição de ter que admitir que ela é ambígua. Faço uso do termo ambiguidade referencial para apontar duas fontes de ambiguidade: (i) pode se referir ao trabalho como objeto ou sujeito da alienação; (ii) pode designar ou não uma referência. Argumento a literatura marxista de apoio não explicitou essa ambiguidade, pois está presa no paradigma de uma “leitura genitivo-subjetiva”. Não se trata, porém, de defender uma “leitura genitivo-objetiva”, mas mostrar que a sua plausibilidade ajuda a esclarecer que os textos do “jovem Marx” eram ambíguos. Para isso, procuro mostrar o que uma “leitura genitivo-objetiva” diria sobre três contextos específicos de uso de “alienação” e “estranhamento”: Manuscritos de 1844 (parte 1), A Sagrada Família e A Ideologia Alemã (parte 2). Busco também explicitar como essa leitura só faz sentido sob a pressuposição de um nominalismo semântico.

El genitivo de los tradicionalmente llamados pronombres presenta una extraña forma en -īus, con una -ī- que parece resistir a la abreviación, al menos en latín arcaico, a pesar de encontrarse ante vocal. Tal anomalía se ha tratado de explicar mediante la formulación de diversas teorías, aunque casi siempre de forma insatisfactoria. De todas ellas, nos parece que la ofrecida por A. Tovar, la de que se trataría de una antigua forma de genitivo en -ī- hipercaracterizada con la desinencia de genitivo -os, nos sigue pareciendo la más acertada, aunque este autor señale que su punto débil es que no puede «alegar ninguna prueba concluyente para explicar la conservación de la -ī- intervocálica». Por nuestra parte, partiendo de esta última teoría, intentaremos ofrecer paralelos de conservación de la -ī- intervocálica en latín, que no acierta a alegar Tovar, y explicar los distintos tratamientos de esa -ī-, pues no en todas las formas consideradas ni en todas las etapas del latín se comporta del mismo modo.

Se ensaya una filosofía de la risa en el doble sentido del genitivo. El objetivo es el habitual en la historia del pensamiento. La opinión común es la de considerar el humor como lo otro del pensamiento. Paradigmáticamente la filosofía, como metafísica, sería la posición intelectual agelasta por antonomasia: el grado cero del humor. Sin embargo, interpretado el genitivo en sentido subjetivo, la risa se muestra como pensamiento y el pensamiento como continuación de la risa mediante el cerebro como músculo cigomático. Pensar y reír amplían la realidad. El sentido del humor revela ser quizá el sentido filosófico genuino.

O particípio genitivo absoluto (PGA) no grego é entendido como oração adverbial com a funções textuais: anáfora, mudança de referente, de cenário e de parágrafo. Argumentamos que essas funções textuais e os usos adverbiais ocorrem por um processo pragmático de inferência que leva em conta a semântica modal do particípio como pressuposição factível, a estrutura morfossintática do particípio genitivo absoluto e o conhecimento do leitor orientando-o na construção da coerência ideacional. Para isso usamos a Linguística Sistêmico-Funcional no grego de Atos dos apóstolos. Apresentamos a visão morfossintática do PGA como oração adverbial e a textual; depois a semântica modal. Em suma: a semântica e a morfossintaxe do PGA orientam o leitor nas inferências.

Im theoretischen Teil wird die Charakteristik des Genitivattributs gegeben; es werden manche Termini erläutert, wodurch die klassische Deutung von Genitivattribut erweitert wird. Im praktischen Teil wird die direkte Beziehung des Genitivs zum Gliedkern, seine Abhängigkeit von anderen genitivischen Beifügungen, auch Substantivhäufungen, in denen nicht nur Genitive, sondern auch die auf eine Präposition folgende Substantive (Präpositionalattribute) festzustellen sind, analysiert. Hier werden auch alternative Fügungen für Genitivattribut besprochen.

It is well documented that there is a one-to-many relationship between Arabic and English genitival constructions. However, it is unclear whether, given this syntactic variation, such constructions show equivalence in semantic function. For this purpose, a corpus-based contrastive analysis of these genitive constructions in a bilingual novel is carried out. As a prelude to a quantitative and qualitative inspection of the data, the (non)interchangeability of the alternative English genitives is determined by eliciting intuitive judgments from 10 linguistically naïve native speakers of British English. Quantitatively, the study shows that the Arabic genitive almost covers the semantic functions expressed by the various English genitives found in the corpus. Qualitatively, the study reveals that the flexibility derived from the English genitive variation, as opposed to the fixed word order of the Arabic genitive, allows the speaker to convey additional meaning. However, the Arabic genitive which employs various formal devices such as overt markers of case, gender, number, definiteness and person can express the same semantic functions. These features render Arabic functional with one genitive and require English to vary its genitive relative to certain phonological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic conditions.

A nivel pedagógico, una de las cuestiones que más llama la atención es la tradicional exposición de la existencia de cinco declinaciones en latín, de tres en griego. Tal exposición atiende a la diversidad en los temas, cuestión secundaria desde un punto de vista morfológico, haciendo caso omiso de las semejanzas en los morfemas desinenciales. Para el latín, ya A. Ernout observa que es suficiente con hablar de dos declinaciones. Pero incluso es sumamente probable que, aplicando una metodología diacrónica, se pueda concluir una reducción aún mayor que la de A. Ernout. Claro que, en tal supuesto, se plantean problemas fonéticos, morfológicos, sintácticos o semánticos que previamente deben ser resueltos. Uno de ellos, no el único, pero si quizás el más complejo, es el de las supuestas divergencias existentes en el genitivo singular(2). Su solución supone, a la vez, una aclaración de la posible identidad "genitivo = adjetivo", ambos determinantes del nombre. Nuestro propósito radica en aportar posibles luces a esta cuestión, analizando a la vez la situación del determinante del nombre en las lenguas modernas, lo que sin duda ayudará a comprender la situación en las lenguas clásicas

This article adopts the surface overlap and derivational complexity hypotheses to study crosslinguistic transfer in the adult second language (L2) acquisition of English genitive alternation (between the s-genitives and the of genitives) by intermediate and advanced Egyptian Arabic-speaking learners. While the s-genitive (e.g. the boy’s shirt) and the of-genitive (e.g. the shirt of the boy) are allowed in principle to denote possession, the s-genitive is the native option when the possessor is human and the possessum is nonhuman. In standard syntactic analyses, the s-genitive is held to be more complex than the of-genitive, since it involves raising the possessor in the determiner phrase (DP). Egyptian Arabic is also known for its genitive alternation; it uses the synthetic genitive (the construct state), and the analytic genitive (the free state) that both overlap partially or significantly with the of-genitive. The results of an elicited production task showed that the intermediate group tended to produce the of-genitives in contexts in which the s-genitives were the target construction. The advanced group, on the other hand, produced the more complex s-genitives. These findings suggest that the surface overlap involved between the of-genitives and the corresponding genitive constructions in Egyptian Arabic conspired to trigger this crosslinguistic transfer. Also, resorting to the overlapping of-genitive option can be viewed as a strategy to avoid the more complex s-genitive option. The results of the advanced group imply that the acquisition of English genitive alternation undergoes two developmental stages. In the first, learners favor the less complex and overlapping of-genitives. In the second, they acquire the syntactic derivation in the s-genitives that raises the possessor in the DP.

The article is devoted to the essential issue of the historical stylistics of German the development of the "nominal" or "substantive" style in the Early Upper German period (XIV-XVII centuries). The research was based on the chronicle of Worms (XVI century) that represents one of the most popular genres of the period. The purpose of article is to analyze the topology and frequency of various types of genitive definitions of a noun in the text. We distributed nuclear nouns into seven semantic groups with a total number of examples of about 160.
The results obtained allow making following conclusions. The prepositive genitive prevails only in the groups of Nomina agentis and relational names. The connection between semantics and the topology of the genitive is hard to trace. Thus, the genitives of subject, object and possessive genitive are distributed between the pre- and postposition almost equally, with some preponderance of the latter. Genitivus definitivus and partitivus tend to postposition. With regards to parameters under consideration, the Worms chronicle corresponds to the general tendency in the XVI century, that is, to move genitive definitions into postposition.

En una inscripción de Plasencia recientemente publicada se ha propuesto reconocer los teónimos en dativo Solidi, Labbo y Lacissabricobo, el segundo de los cuales está atestiguado también en la inscripción lusitana del Cabeço das Fráguas. Sin embargo, creemos que la interpretación adecuada de esta inscripción debe ser como una secuencia de fórmula onomástica personal con genitivo patronímico Solidi, seguida de un teónimo con su epíteto, ambos en dativo plural (Labbo Lagissabrigobo), lo que implica un cambio respecto del análisis lingüístico tradicional del teónimo Labbo.

São analisados a "Carta" de Pero Vaz de Caminha, escrita chave para a produção do discurso da brasilidade, e o poema "Erro de português", de Oswald de Andrade, tomado como reformulação da escrita fundadora. A implicação ética do acabamento estético das duas escritas em língua portuguesa articula processos de subjetivação que definem identidades culturais possíveis e atualiza uma política linguística que confere tensão entre o caráter genitivo e locativo do vernáculo, respectivamente, do Brasil e no Brasil.

Este trabalho tem por objetivo investigar o mecanismo de Incorporação Nominal na língua Tenetehára e sua relação com as classes aspectuais propostas por Vendler (1967). Nessa língua, o mecanismo de Incorporação Nominal se realiza por meio de dois diferentes contextos morfossintáticos: (i) incorporação total do objeto ao vo e (ii) incorporação do núcleo do sintagma genitivo ao vo. Na incorporação total, quando o objeto direto se incorpora ao predicado verbal, é gerado um predicado que se comporta como um verbo intransitivo. Todavia, nas construções de alçamento do possuidor, apenas parte do sintagma genitivo, a saber seu núcleo, pode se incorporar ao núcleo do vP. O resultado desse processo não altera a estrutura transitiva inicial. Assim, nas construções de alçamento do possuidor não ocorre diminuição de valência, apesar de haver Incorporação Nominal. Ademais, em relação ao plano semântico das construções de alçamento de objeto, o que tenho observado é que os falantes dessa língua costumam apontar duas interpretações distintas, uma para a versão sem Incorporação Nominal outra para a versão com Incorporação Nominal. Assim, no presente artigo, pretendo responder qual organização constante se pode depreender do paradigma de interpretação apresentado. A hipótese que defenderei é que as nuances de sentido entre estes dados têm a ver com a noção de aspecto verbal e as definições de accomplishment e achievement delineadas por Vendler (1967). Neste sentido, minha hipótese é de que as construções sem Incorporação Nominal podem se conformar à classe semântica de predicados verbais de accomplishment, ao passo que as versões com Incorporação Nominal em contextos de alçamento de objeto abrangem obrigatoriamente os predicados de achievement.

Es un trabajo que requiere metodologías complementarias a las tradicionales, y más subjetivas: la narración oral, la pintura temática, la reescritura del texto bíblico. El ejercicio interpretativo conjuga el análisis crítico con las potencialidades que la niñez tiene para jugar, soñar y construir nuevas realidades. El resultado del empleo de una metodología diversa tributa a un modo más holístico de pensar y vivir la fe, que a la vez des-legitima la superioridad del adulto.

La posizione linguistica del Messapico è ancor oggi dibattuta, perché questa lingua, pur appartenendo alla famiglia Indo-Europea, non appare affine ad alcuna delle altre lingue dell’Italia antica, classificandosi dunque come ‘isolata’. Algunos de ellos (v.gr. “historia”, “filosofía”) han sido objeto de ocupación del pensamiento filosófico desde hace siglos. En esta medida mucho se ha dicho sobre el sentido en que la historia de la filosofía es “filosofía” o es “historia”. En este trabajo busco dar cuenta del modo en que se puede acometer esta cuestión, pero desde un ángulo distinto, sc. haciéndose cargo de la pregunta por el genitivo contenido en la expresión “historia de la filosofía”. En conexión con ello se busca presentar diversos modelos de interpretación de la relación de la filosofía con su propia historia que se basan en el supuesto de que existe una distinción tajante entre ambas. Intentaré mostrar que los modelos aquí reseñados son inadecuados y que no logran dar cuenta de manera apropiada de la función metódica que tiene la historia de la filosofía para la filosofía misma.

In this paper, I argue that the difference between indefinite- and definite-declension genitives in Moksha (Uralic) is not in the semantic or referential characteristics of the nominals they mark (as the name suggests), but rather in the syntactic size of the nominals. I show that there is no one-to-one correspondence between the definiteness of a noun phrase and its marking. In particular, indefinite-declension genitives can mark non-specific indefinite as well as specific definite noun phrases. At the same time, indefinite-declension genitives are number-neutral, while definite-declension genitives are specified for number. In contrast to indefinite-declension nominals, definite-declension ones also trigger possessive agreement on the head noun. I analyze indefinite-genitives as NPs and definite-genitives as DPs. Based on what is generally known about DPs, I make several predictions regarding the distribution of the genitives; two definite-declension genitives should be incompatible within one enclosing DP, while there should be no such restriction on the co-occurrence of an indefinite-declension genitive with either another indefinite-declension genitive or a definite-declension genitive. These predictions are borne out, and these new findings enrich the discussion of the ban on the co-occurrence of two DPs which are too close in the structure. More generally, my analysis supports the view that nominals of different structural size can coexist within one language.

This article offers an in-depth treatment of a ‘nonprototypical’ s-genitive, i.e. the descriptive genitive (e.g. women's magazine), which has so far received little attention in the grammars of English. Various types of descriptive genitives are distinguished, i.e. classifying, metaphorical, and generic genitives. In addition, the article raises a number of theoretical issues of a more general nature, such as the delimitation of syntactic phrases from compounds. Most importantly, it is argued that descriptive genitives provide evidence for constructional gradience in the English noun phrase in two ways: (1) gradience between determiner genitives and descriptive genitives, and (2) gradience between s-genitives and noun + noun sequences. A central claim is made that semantic overlaps may give rise to constructional gradience. In this respect the present article complements earlier accounts of gradience that have emphasized the importance of structural criteria only. The article concludes with a brief consideration of measure genitives, which are in many ways similar to descriptive genitives.

AbstractWhereas the alternation between the s-genitive (the New Year's message) and the of-genitive (the message of the New Year) is well documented, our study offers a more accountable analysis of genitive variation by including noun-noun (NN)-genitives (the New Year message). We consider four different variable contexts (s versus of, NN versus of, NN versus s, and NN versus s versus of ), which we analyze using regression analysis. The dataset consists of 10,054 variable genitives drawn from the Representative Corpus of Historical English Registers. The material covers the period between 1650 and 2000, thus enabling us to track the evolution of variable genitive grammar in real time. We report that there is an overall drift toward the NN-genitive, which is preferred over other variants when constituent noun phrases are short, possessor constituents are inanimate, and possessum constituents are thematic. In addition to these substantive contributions, we showcase methods of dealing with a complex dataset covering nonbinary grammatical variation.

Los sustantivos deverbales y un cierto tipo de icónicos en latín pueden recibir dos complementos, que suelen tener los papeles temáticos de Tema y Agente y que se pueden expresar mediante un genitivo o un complemento preposicional, entre otros. Partiendo de esta base, el objetivo de este artículo es, por una parte, estudiar cómo se organiza la expresión de estos complementos utilizando para ello un corpus de títulos de los documentos copiados en tres cartularios de los siglos XII-XIII. Por otra, pretendemos analizar qué relación encontramos entre los diferentes tipos de sustantivos y la categoría sintáctica y papeles temáticos de sus argumentos. De este modo, obtendremos un panorama del funcionamiento de las redes argumentales de estos sustantivos en una tradición discursiva particular del latín medieval.

El movimiento ficticio propiamente dicho consiste en una metonimia por la que un Trayecto se concibe como un Agente que se desplaza (la carretera va a Atenas). El viajero implícito en esas oraciones aparece a menudo en forma de participio en dativo o genitivo que expresa un Experimentador, o en forma de 2a persona genérica. El movimiento ficticio desempeña a menudo un papel importante en oraciones comparativas que describen un Trayecto que conduce a un lugar, y también explica el uso del acusativo con valor de Trayecto en algunos sintagmas preposicionales, que –contra lo esperado– se combinan con verbos estáticos.

Abstract Rulebooks of Easy-to-read (ETR) German recommend to strictly avoid the genitive and to replace it by “von”-phrases with dative. This is backed by the assumption that for the target groups of ETR German genitive-phrases are generally harder to understand than “von”-phrases. However, there has been no empirical foundation for this assumption. The test reported in this paper addressed this problem and wanted to find out whether genitive is really harder to understand than “von”-phrases for two target groups: 17 adults with intellectual disability and 16 functional illiterates, that is people, who learned to read but, due to multiple reasons, do not have reading skills (anymore) that are sufficient for everyday life. The test was designed as multiple-choice test and compares the intelligibility of common forms of the attributive genitive (i.a. genitivus obiectivus, genitivus partitivus) with their “von”-paraphrases. The participants had to read and understand sentences and subsequently choose between statements that applied to the sentences or not. The overall results show that the tested forms of the attributive genitive were easy to understand. Comparing genitive-phrases and “von”-phrases there were no significant differences. That means, both forms were easy to understand for the participants. Some genitive forms were even easier to understand than the “von”-paraphrases. The results lead to the conclusion that the general prohibition of genitive in ETR German has to be revised.

En este estudio se quiere mostrar de modo sintético en qué consiste el acontecer del pensamiento de Cristo. En primer lugar, se indagará cuál es su método de pensamiento. Se mostrará que es com-puesto con el Padre; entre el Logos y el pensamiento del hombre judío que es Jesús; con los hombres. En un sintético apéndice se inferirá lo que esto significa para reconocer en qué consiste el cuerpo de Cristo. En segundo lugar, se mostrarán las dimensiones de su pensamiento: la autoridad y la imputabilidad. En las conclusiones se recopilarán algunos datos y ofreceremos, además, sugerencias que pueden servir para solucionar algunas cuestiones referentes al modo de entender a Cristo.

Zusammenfassung Die Entstehung der sogenannten ‚uneigentlichen‘ bzw. verfugten Komposita im Frühneuhochdeutschen aus pränominalen Genitivkonstruktionen wird gemeinhin als natürliche Entwicklung verstanden, die sich prinzipiell mithilfe üblicher Wandelmechanismen wie Reanalyse oder Grammatikalisierung aus dem mündlichen Sprachgebrauch erklären lässt. Dabei ergeben sich jedoch bestimmte Probleme, die die phonologischen Voraussetzungen für einen solchen Prozess sowie seine Chronologie betreffen. In diesem Beitrag wird durch eine quantitative Korpusanalyse die Diachronie der verfugten Komposita, ihrer mutmaßlichen Ursprungskonstruktion, der pränominalen Genitive, sowie zwischen diesen Strukturen vermittelnder Brückenkonstruktionen untersucht. Dafür dient das diachrone Predigten-Korpus SermonC, das Texte aus dem Zeitraum vom frühen 9. bis zum 19. Jahrhundert umfasst und eine ausgeglichene Basis für die Untersuchung von Sprachwandel mit Langzeitperspektive bietet. Im Ergebnis zeigt sich, dass die verfugten Komposita zu einer Zeit grammatikalisiert wurden, als der pränominale Genitiv längst aus der gesprochenen Sprache verschwunden war und somit die Voraussetzung für natürlichen Sprachwandel auf dieser Grundlage nicht mehr gegeben war. Stattdessen scheint es so, dass diese Grammatikalisierung auf der Basis der rein schriftlichen Genitivkompetenz und somit im geschriebenen Deutsch erfolgte. Daher wird in diesem Beitrag argumentiert, dass sich der Prozess der Entstehung der verfugten Komposita im Schriftlichen abspielte, d. h. in einer geschriebenen Varietät des historischen Deutsch, und erst in der Folge auf die Mündlichkeit zurückwirkte. Erst sekundär fand die neue Struktur, die gewissermaßen eine Kontamination aus pränominalem Genitiv und dem klassischen, unverfugten Kompositum darstellt, Eingang in die gesprochene Sprache. Dieser Hergang ist nicht nur aufgrund der Datenlage plausibel und wahrscheinlich, sondern vor dem Hintergrund des Verlusts des adnominalen Genitivs in den Mundarten zwingend und stellt eine Lösung für die genannten Probleme im phonologischen und historischen Bereich dar.

Se estudia en este trabajo la relación entre los nombres de unidades familiares indígenas en genitivo plural y los nombres indígenas que también puede referirse a ellas, atendiendo a diferentes aspectos. Tras analizar en la primera parte del artículo los procedimientos de derivación empleados para formar los nombres de esas unidades, en esta segunda parte se lleva a cabo una revisión de las menciones de parentesco en relación con los nombres de unidades familiares, con especial atención al tercer bronce de Botorrita. Los resultados refuerzan la idea de que no se trataba de grandes clanes, sino de grupos más limitados en número y extensión temporal, lo que se puede poner en relación con la información epigráfica sobre los procesos por los cuales podían ir surgiendo, dentro de una unidad familiar previamente existente, nuevas unidades con un nombre diferente, que ya fueron tratados en la primera parte.

Die deutsche Sprache gehört zu der Gruppe germanischer Sprachen, die neben dem relativ häufig gebrauchten analytischen Genitiv auch die ältere Form des synthetischen Genitivs beibehalten haben (vgl. das Isländische, Schwedische usw.). Der synthetische Genitiv ist eine attributive Nominalgruppe, in der das Verhältnis zum Bezugsnomen durch Flexionsformen angezeigt wird (daz buoch der wîsheit /Meister Eckhart/), wohingegen mit dem analytischen Genitiv eine attributive Präpositionalgruppe gemeint ist, die die Präposition von enthält und einen attributiven synthetischen Genitiv ersetzen kann. Die Präposition von hat eine vergleichbare Funktion wie die oben erwähnte Flexionsform (eine Vielheit von Personen /Matthias Scheeben/). Beide Genitivformen sind sowohl in den ältesten Entwicklungsstufen des Deutschen wie auch in jüngeren Perioden Konkurrenzformen. Das Thema des vorliegenden Beitrages ist das Verhältnis zwischen dem Gebrauch beider Formen und die Intensität, mit der der analytische Genitiv den synthetischen ersetzt. Es ist ein diachroner Vergleich und beide Genitivformen sind so anhand Belege aus allen sprachgeschichtlichen Perioden der deutschen Sprache untersucht, verglichen und statistisch bearbeitet worden.

Compounding is one of the most productive types of Livonian word formation. Compounds typically are synthetic and contain one or more modifiers, which follow the head of the compound. Most compound nouns have a singular genitive modifier. Livonian also has an important sub-group of compound nouns and adjectives, which has preserved the historical singular genitive ending *-n in modifiers. On rare occasions, the modifier can also be nominative. In such compounds, the modifier partially agrees in case with the head. An important group of Livonian compound nouns, created on the Latvian model, has declinable active present participles as modifiers. The Livonian system of compounds, just like Livonian itself, generally follows traditional Finnic compound word formation principles, but also has characteristics of compound formation typical of Latvian. Understanding the Livonian system of compounds was greatly helped by use of the Livonian written language corpus.Kokkuvõte. Valts Ernštreits: Liitsõnade moodustamise põhimõtted liivi keeles. Abstract In this paper I reconstruct two separative argument structure constructions for West Germanic: one involving a genitive of origin and one involving an instrumental in the process of being subsumed under the dative. Although neither genitives nor instrumentals/datives are typically used to refer to literal origins in space in any of the languages under consideration, a number of verbs attested with genitives and instrumentals/datives can be semantically related to each other as expressing different metaphorical extensions from the concept of separation. The fact that the expression of spatial origin itself is not a function of the genitive or the instrumental/dative can be explained diachronically with reference to a common evolutionary scenario in which adpositional phrases replace bare-case constructions in their concrete, spatial functions before they take over their derived, more abstract senses. The alternation between genitives, instrumentals/datives and separative prepositions is best modelled as a constructeme, a schema with various allostructions.

This paper analyses a fragment of the adnominal genitive that remains in productive use in present-day Dutch, appearing in novel formations like de generatie der babyboomers ‘the generation the.gen babyboomers’ and het trillende filmbeeld des levens ‘the vibrating film picture the.gen life.gen’. On the basis of written and spoken corpus data, this paper accounts for the structural regularities found in the novel genitives, their relationship to the preposition van ‘of’, which succeeded the adnominal genitive, and the place of the genitive in modern Dutch morphosyntax. It is proposed that a constructional approach can account for the genitive's productivity.

This article tries to fill a descriptive gap in the literature on English possessive NPs by offering a systematic description of indefinite possessive NPs (e.g. a friend's house, a widow's pension, men's suits). Specifically, two descriptive issues are dealt with. Firstly, the different types of determining indefinite genitives are discussed. It is shown that indefinite determiner genitives can have specific reference, generalized reference or generic reference. Moreover, it is argued that in all of these cases, the indefinite genitive specifies a reference point (Langacker 1993) for the identification of the ‘possessee’ and functions as a grounding predication. It is also proposed that subsective gradience (Aarts 2004, 2007) can be diagnosed for determining genitives, i.e. that more central and more peripheral members can be distinguished within this category. Secondly, the distinction between determining and nondetermining, classifying genitives (e.g. a [woman's magazine] ‘a magazine for women’) is re-examined. This distinction is relevant to the description of indefinite possessive NPs, since they have been considered as evidence for a fuzzy boundary between determining and nondetermining genitives (Taylor 1996, Rosenbach 2006). It is argued, against such an analysis, that the two functions of the genitive can be clearly distinguished, even in ‘bridging contexts’ (Evans & Wilkins 2000), i.e. contexts in which both a determining and a nondetermining reading are supported. Consequently, there is no intersective gradience (Aarts 2004, 2007) between determining and nondetermining genitives on the level of the constructional semantics.

In this paper I examine the effect of the semantic relationship between an attributive genitive and its head noun on the relative ordering of the two during the ENHG period. Data were collected from five sources, all written between 1500 and 1550 by men who were natives of the city Nuremburg. Since it has been shown that personal genitives more frequently preceded the head noun, while nonpersonal genitives more often followed, the data were broken down into those two categories. It is shown that personal subjective and objective genitives are more likely to follow the head noun than personal genitives in general, while personal possessive and relational genitives are more likely to precede.

AbstractThis article proposes an account of genitive case marking in the Maori DP which shows how the licensing requirements for genitive depend both on thematic role distinctions and on the presence of a functional projection situated immediately below D. An investigation of ordering alternations including genitives, demonstratives, adjectives, and the lexical head indicates that the FP below D is also the location of an identifying or specifying function within the DP. The label “IdentP” is proposed as a cover term for this FP projection. It is also proposed that DPs containing nominalized verbs include a head, Nmz, that has the capacity to license additional instantiations of genitive case marking.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency of genitives with these prepositions in current newspaper texts and to determine requirements for further research. The selected prepositions are described lexicographically, and the frequency of their genitive and dative usage is evaluated in a corpus developed by the author of this paper within DeReKo.

The history of the genitive case from Old English onwards, specifically the diversity of genitival functions in Old English, and the subsequent development of the case as determiner marker as claimed in Rosenbach (2002), can be explained coherently by assuming NP status for genitive nominals and nondistinct categorial status of the determiner class in OE. This article argues that OE, as an inflected language, encodes events in terms of roles carried by participants, and that the genitive case signalled partial or nonparticipation of a designated thing. This enabled a genitive nominal to be subordinated to another NP, which gives a coherent gestalt of the two things, and also to function as a full NP elsewhere. At the same time, the loose categorial status of determiners made it possible for a genitive nominal in prenominal position to function as a determiner. After the OE period, the determiner category became more distinct from others, and a genitive nominal, being a member of this category, ceased to be able to function as NP.

This article explores measures, operationalisations and effects of rhythm and weight as two constraints on the variation between thes-genitive and theof-genitive. We base the analysis on interchangeable genitives in the news and letters sections of ARCHER (A Representative Corpus of Historical English Registers), which covers the period between 1650 and 1999. Thus, we are ultimately concerned with the applicability of two factors that have their roots in speech (rhythm: phonology; weight: online processing) to an ‘unconventional’, written data set with a historical dimension. As for weight, we focus on the comparison of simple single-constituent and more complex multi-constituent measurements. Our notion of rhythm centres on the ideally even distribution of stressed and unstressed syllables. We find that in our data set, both rhythm and weight show theoretically unexpected quadratic effects: rhythmically better-behaveds-genitives are not necessarily preferred overof-genitives, and short constituents exhibit odd weight effects. In conclusion, we argue that while rhythm is only a minor player in our data set, the quadratic quirks it exhibits should inspire further study. Weight, on the other hand, is a crucial factor which, however, likewise comes with measurement and modelling complications.
