Abstract:
O presente estudo dedica-se a análise da estrutura semântica e da polissemia do genitivo de posse em português. Tendo em vista análises da posse genitiva em termos de metáfora conceptual (NIKIFORIDOU, 1991; LANGACKER 1991) e da mereologia estrutural (LYONS, 1980), consideramos o problema da insuficiência de tais argumentos para a descrição da polissemia da posse. Como alternativa teórica e descritiva, postula-se que as construções de genitivo correspondam a padrões metonímicos associados a domínios de contiguidade (PEIRSMAN GEERAERTS, 2006), seja via transformação entre esquemas imagéticos de experiências contíguas, seja pelo mapeamento metafórico entre domínios de contiguidade. ---DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.31513/linguistica.2019.v15n2a21413

Abstract:
Busca-se neste artigo um deslocamento teórico da tradução dos antropólogos para a tradução dos nativos, destacando neste trânsito diferenças menos nos pontos de partida ou de eventual chegada que nas modalidades de aproximação. O marco etnográfico desta escolha é configurado por imagens de pensamento dos Waiwai, em particular da comunidade de Jatapuzinho (RR), onde realizei minhas pesquisas de campo. Constelações culturais tais como a busca dos Waiwai pelos 'povos não-vistos' (enîhni komo), sua noção de 'alma-olho' (yewru yekatî) ou seus rituais em relação a diferentes animais e seus respectivos 'donos' ou 'donos-de-roupas' (ponoyosomo) constituem elaborações ou ensaios (sem deixar de lado as conotações reflexivas) sobre a tradução. Sua descrição motiva a introdução de conceitos como a 'ressonância', a 'redundância' e a 'repetição' (aquela que gera diferenças) e deixa entrever pautas culturais maiores como o 'rodeio' e a 'impropriedade'. A atenção às variações e oscilações do suposto original através de suas diferentes versões se conecta com posições da atual reflexão interdisciplinar sobre a tradução. Entre elas as idéias de Walter Benjamin em torno da sobrevivência do original através da tradução; os efeitos de transformação através da tradução apontados por Jacques Derrida; e a viabilidade, segundo Talal Asad, de traduções culturais que, avançando por outros registros, transbordam o discurso etnográfico clássico. Estas convergências induzem a questionar em que medida a concepção de tradução está ligada à concepção de relação e em que medida uma pode ser repensada a partir da outra.

La construcción de genitivo en inglés [NP’s + N] puede ser interpretada de diversas maneras atendiendo no solo a factores léxicos y semánticos, sino también pragmáticos. El objetivo principal de este estudio es plantear que el genitivo agente (John’s claim) es más habitual en inglés que el de posesión (John’s car), a pesar de lo que tradicionalmente se mantiene. El estudio demuestra este hecho analizando ejemplos de dos corpus de lengua escrita: el Brown y el Lobtag. Además de relacionar el genitivo agente con el proceso de nominalización, se ofrece una posible explicación de la frecuencia de esta interpretación semántica.

El presente estudio ofrece una visión diacrónica de algunas de las construcciones propias del elativo árabe, partiendo de las etapas tempranas del árabe clásico. Desde entonces, el elativo ha experimentado un desarrollo notable y ha producido varios usos sintácticos desconocidos para los gramáticos árabes clásicos. Especialmente interesante es la evolución histórica y las relaciones semánticas entre las tres estructuras que expresan habitualmente la noción del superlativo en el árabe escrito moderno: 1) elativo + sustantivo singular indeterminado en genitivo (akbaru madīnatin), 2) elativo + sustantivo ñural determinado en genitivo (akbaru l-muduni), y 3) elativo usado como atributo de un sustantivo determinado (al-madīnatu l-akbaru), todas ellas traducibles como “la ciudad más grande”, pero diferentes entre sí en ciertos aspectos. Se puede observar una tendencia a crear simetrías en el sistema sintáctico del elativo como atributo adjetival, por una parte, y, por otra parte, la forma de expresar una gradación comparativo - superlativo mediante la misma estructura sintáctica (atribución adjuetival) que solo difiere en cuanto a la (in)determinación. Además, una estructura que solo se documenta de forma marginal en árabe clásico, es decir, los elativos de esquema C1uC2C3ā + sustantivo plural en genitive, pasa a ser usado de forma frecuente en el árabe escrito moderno. El plural que le corresponde, C1uC2C3āayāt, es una innovación cuya expansión, particularmente en el lenguaje periodístico, se puede atribuir a la tendencia a la desambiguación.

A tese principal deste artigo é que se nos perguntarmos pela referência do conceito “alienação”, nos encontraremos na posição de ter que admitir que ela é ambígua. Faço uso do termo ambiguidade referencial para apontar duas fontes de ambiguidade: (i) pode se referir ao trabalho como objeto ou sujeito da alienação; (ii) pode designar ou não uma referência. Argumento a literatura marxista de apoio não explicitou essa ambiguidade, pois está presa no paradigma de uma “leitura genitivo-subjetiva”. Não se trata, porém, de defender uma “leitura genitivo-objetiva”, mas mostrar que a sua plausibilidade ajuda a esclarecer que os textos do “jovem Marx” eram ambíguos. Para isso, procuro mostrar o que uma “leitura genitivo-objetiva” diria sobre três contextos específicos de uso de “alienação” e “estranhamento”: Manuscritos de 1844 (parte 1), A Sagrada Família e A Ideologia Alemã (parte 2). Busco também explicitar como essa leitura só faz sentido sob a pressuposição de um nominalismo semântico.

El genitivo de los tradicionalmente llamados pronombres presenta una extraña forma en -īus, con una -ī- que parece resistir a la abreviación, al menos en latín arcaico, a pesar de encontrarse ante vocal. Tal anomalía se ha tratado de explicar mediante la formulación de diversas teorías, aunque casi siempre de forma insatisfactoria. De todas ellas, nos parece que la ofrecida por A. Tovar, la de que se trataría de una antigua forma de genitivo en -ī- hipercaracterizada con la desinencia de genitivo -os, nos sigue pareciendo la más acertada, aunque este autor señale que su punto débil es que no puede «alegar ninguna prueba concluyente para explicar la conservación de la -ī- intervocálica». Por nuestra parte, partiendo de esta última teoría, intentaremos ofrecer paralelos de conservación de la -ī- intervocálica en latín, que no acierta a alegar Tovar, y explicar los distintos tratamientos de esa -ī-, pues no en todas las formas consideradas ni en todas las etapas del latín se comporta del mismo modo.

Se ensaya una filosofía de la risa en el doble sentido del genitivo. El objetivo es el habitual en la historia del pensamiento. La opinión común es la de considerar el humor como lo otro del pensamiento. Paradigmáticamente la filosofía, como metafísica, sería la posición intelectual agelasta por antonomasia: el grado cero del humor. Sin embargo, interpretado el genitivo en sentido subjetivo, la risa se muestra como pensamiento y el pensamiento como continuación de la risa mediante el cerebro como músculo cigomático. Pensar y reír amplían la realidad. El sentido del humor revela ser quizá el sentido filosófico genuino.

Lo scopo della seguente tesi magistrale è quello di analizzare la graduale scomparsa del caso genitivo in greco da una prospettiva diacronica e dialettologica. Verrà inizialmente presentata una breve storia della lingua greca e delle sue diverse fasi linguistiche: greco antico (da Micene all’Impero Romano), greco medievale (da Bisanzio all’Impero Ottomano), greco moderno (dalla caduta dell’Impero Ottomano alla cosiddetta “questione della lingua”) ed infine neogreco (dall’indipendenza della Grecia fino ai giorni nostri). Sarà poi introdotto il sistema generale della declinazione dei casi in greco insieme con le loro caratteristiche morfologiche (desinenza e variazioni dell’accentuazione). Particolare attenzione verrà data al genitivo introducendo, innanzitutto, i suoi vari impieghi ed usi; si passerà successivamente al fenomeno del sincretismo con il caso dativo prima e, in alcuni contesti specifici come nella declinazione dei pronomi personali, con il caso accusativo. Sarà, quindi, esposto il caso genitivo così come è formato ed usato nel neogreco. Verranno poi esposte le problematiche esistenti nella sua formazione (paradigmi mancanti nella declinazione); le costruzioni linguistiche alternative per la resa del genitivo; il modo in cui le parole di origine straniera entrate nel lessico del greco vengono declinate. Seguirà una breve analisi della perdita del genitivo in alcune varietà linguistiche e dialettali del neogreco.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate the evolution of genitive noun phrases (i.e. Genitive+Noun and Noun+Genitive structures, split genitives, his genitives and combined genitives) and their “analytic” equivalents (i.e. N+[of+N] structures) in some prose texts belonging to Old and Middle English. In the first part of the study, different aspects of the various synthetic structures are examined. Firstly the investigation of the alternation between G+N and N+G structures in Old English shows that the (in)animacy of the genitive referent is a more important factor than the relative morpho-syntactic weight in determining the phrasal word-order. Secondly, the analysis of the relative frequency of the various synthetic structures demonstrates that N+G structures almost disappear during the Middle English period, in correlation with the change of function of the prepositional phrase of+N. On the contrary, G+N structures tend to remain stable up to the XIV century. Two hypotheses are proposed with respect to the preservation of G+N structures throughout the Middle English period: either they became fixed formulas or they were the result of a process of reanalysis of the –es marker as the possessive his in the so-called his genitive structures. In particular it is claimed that a four-stage grammaticalization path of the possessive his is what caused the bleaching between his genitive structures and NPs with –es genitives. The second part of the study investigates the function and distribution of the prepositional phrase of+N: more specifically, it is claimed that the reanalysis of the predicative structure [[verb of movement] + [of+N]], used in ablative contexts, led to the change of function of the prepositional phrase from adverbal modifier to adnominal modifier. Finally, a large part of the study is reserved to the investigation of the different semantic relations conveyed by both the genitive NPs and the N+[of+N] structures: in particular, it is showed that in Old English any synthetic structure could be associated to any semantic relation. On the contrary, in Middle English the reanalyzed N+[of+N] structure appears to take over the genitive NPs in any semantic relation, except the alienable/inalienable possessive relations where the G+N structure is still the most likely choice.

La tesi analizza il fenomeno del genitivo -aes nelle iscrizioni dell'impero romano. La prima parte introduce lo status quaestionis e vengono offerte le spiegazioni formulate dagli studiosi a partire dal XIX secolo fino agli anni 2000, che corrispondono a tre tesi principali: influenza del greco, l'influenza dell'osco o dei dialetti italici, l'analogia con la terza declinazione del latino. Il lavoro prosegue, nella seconda parte, con la presentazione dei dati raccolti, in tutto circa 1100 iscrizioni, catalogati in un database, e con l'analisi della distribuzione della desinenza per quanto riguarda l'area geografica, la collocazione cronologica, la tipologia epigrafica, la composizione della formula onomastica e il tipo di contesto linguistico. Nella parte conclusiva, vengono confrontati i dati ottenuti con le ipotesi, confutando quelle che non permettono di rendere ragione del fenomeno, per proporre una nuova interpretazione.

What is the place of relatives with genitive subjects in a typology of relative clauses? Are they full or reduced, headed or free relatives? Can they appear pre- and postnominally? Can they be head-internal relatives? Are they finite or non-finite? Can they be restrictives and appositives? These are the questions that this thesis will address. Full relatives have nominative subjects. Thus, relatives with genitive subjects are not full relatives. Relatives with genitive subjects share, however, many properties with reduced relatives. Among others, both prohibit relative pronouns and complementizers. Both employ participles, i.e., verbs that lack tense but exhibit nominal properties. Both prohibit nominative subjects. Therefore, it will be argued that relative clauses with genitive subjects are reduced relatives. There exists, however, one difference between relative clauses with genitive subjects and standard reduced relatives. Only the former permits non-subject relativization. It will be argued that reduced relatives are headed by a NP and that the difference in permitting genitive subjects is caused by a difference in the case licensing mechanisms within this NP. Only if N can license structural genitive case can a language have relative clauses with genitive subjects. The verb in reduced relatives lacks tense. If the finite/non-finite distinction is based on the presence of tense, then reduced relatives are non-finite clauses.
(cont.) Furthermore, there are no non-finite free relatives. Thus, reduced relatives must be headed relatives. Finally, reduced relatives cannot be appositives. Appositives are full clauses. Thus, reduced relatives can only be restrictive relatives. In certain contexts, however, reduced relatives permit another reading. They can receive Free Adjunct interpretations. This is because Free Adjuncts too are smaller than CP. Thus they depend on the matrix clause for their temporal interpretation. This can result in a reading according to which the events in the matrix and the adjunct clause co-occur, i.e., in a when-reading and in an if-reading if the matrix clause contains a modal. The reading that is always available to reduced adjunct clauses is the because-reading, which as a default is the most salient way for the adjunct to establish a logical connection to the matrix clause.

Abstract:
The genitive ratio (GR) is a novel method of classifying nouns as animate, concrete or abstract. English has two genitive (possessive) constructions: possessive-s (the boy's head) and possessive-of (the head of the boy). There is compelling evidence that preference for possessive-s is strongly influenced by the possessor's animacy. A corpus analysis that counts each genitive construction in three conditions (definite, indefinite and no article) confirms that occurrences of possessive-s decline as the animacy hierarchy progresses from animate through concrete to abstract. A computer program (Animyser) is developed to obtain results-counts from phrase-searches of Wikipedia that provide multiple genitive ratios for any target noun. Key ratios are identified and algorithms developed, with specific applications achieving classification accuracies of over 80%. The algorithms, based on logistic regression, produce a score of relative animacy that can be applied to individual nouns or to texts. The genitive ratio is a tool with potential applications in any research domain where the relative animacy of language might be significant. Three such applications exemplify that. Combining GR analysis with other factors might enhance established co-reference (anaphora) resolution algorithms. In sentences formed from pairings of animate with concrete or abstract nouns, the animate noun is usually salient, more likely to be the grammatical subject or thematic agent, and to co-refer with a succeeding pronoun or noun-phrase. Two experiments, online sentence production and corpus-based, demonstrate that the GR algorithm reliably predicts the salient noun. Replication of the online experiment in Italian suggests that the GR might be applied to other languages by using English as a 'bridge'. In a mental health context, studies have indicated that Alzheimer's patients' language becomes progressively more concrete; depressed patients' language more abstract. Analysis of sample texts suggests that the GR might monitor the prognosis of both illnesses, facilitating timely clinical interventions.

We investigate this phenomenon on a construction pair in Turkish, which shares the same external GEN-POSS morpho-syntactic template despite having distinct grammatical categories. The results of the study which consists of a series of production and comprehension experiments with various methodologies (written sentence completion, self-paced reading and eye-tracking) indicate that structural priming might access the morphosyntactic level of representation in Turkish. Priming seems sensitive to the distinction between the phrasal vs. clausal nature of structures. During the processing of GEN-POSS constructions, the grammatical information regarding the constituents is accessed. Complex forms are further decomposed if processing resources are available. Overall, language production and comprehension seem to operate on the same structural representations but through different mechanisms. In addition, the study also contributes to the understanding of structural priming as a methodological paradigm and to the establishment of a bridge between the processing and theoretical linguistic analysis of Turkish nominalized verbs. To conclude, this study pioneers in exploring structural priming in Turkish and opens way to future research in this line.

Kinesiska och miao-språket hmu har nära kontakt med varandra och påverkan från kinesiskan har iakttagits i hmu på lexikal och fonologisk nivå. Denna studie undersöker hur påverkan från kinesiskan ser ut även på syntaktisk nivå i fråga om användningen av genitiv och nominalisering. På kinesiska uttrycks detta med en och samma partikel, vilken har en motsvarighet i hmu. Studien delades upp i två delar: en korpusundersökning och en meningsanalys över två olika upplagor av Nya testamentet på hmu. I den tidigare upplagan användes den partikel flitigt som på hmu sägs uttrycka genitiv och nominalisering och korpusundersökningen visade en minskad användning av denna partikel i den senare upplagan av Nya testamentet. Meningsanalysen visade att kinesisk påverkan finns på användningen av genitiv men inte på nominalisering i hmu. Med detta har vi fått en klarare bild av hur kinesisk påverkan ser ut på just dessa syntaktiska funktioner i hmu.
The Chinese language and the Miao Language Hmu live in close contact with each other. The influence from Chinese has been noted in the language of Hmu in both lexicon and phonology. This research examines what the influence from the Chinese language looks like in the syntax of Hmu when it comes to genitive and nominalization. In Chinese this is expressed with one single particle, which has an equivalent in Hmu. The research is divided into two parts: a corpus study and an analysis of sentences based on two different editions of the New Testament in Hmu. In the earliest edition the Hmu particle, which is said to express genitive and nominalization, is used frequently and the corpus study showed a decreased usage of this particle in the later edition of the New Testament. The analysis of sentences showed that there is a Chinese influence on the usage of genitive but not on the nominalization. The picture of what Chinese influence looks like on these particular syntactic functions in Hmu is now clearer.

Abstract:
The paper deals with Russian syntactic constructions prichina, chto P (lit. ‘cause that P’) and prichina togo, chto P with expletive pronoun to in genitive case, that are in most cases interchangeable. The purpose is to describe the syntactic and semantic properties of these constructions in Russian using corpus data. The semantics of the noun prichina ‘cause, reason’ and its argument structure were critically examined, and a representative set of examples where this noun is a part of one of these constructions was analyzed. The following results were obtained: 1) the description of the argument structure of the word prichina was supplemented; 2) the constraint on the use of chtocomplements with deverbative nouns observed in [10] was shown to cover non-deverbative noun-predicate prichina ‘cause’; 3) it was shown that the semantic role of the chto-clause may be either Cause or Effect depending on the syntactic function of the construction; 4) it was determined that both meanings of the noun prichina (objective vs subjective cause) may be expressed in both constructions — with and without to — irrespective of syntactic function of the construction.

Abstract:
The corpus study of grammatical variation is not considered a complex task anymore. However, the corpus annotations used to solve the task are based on specific theoretical assumptions which do not necessarily cover all possible variants found in empirical material. On the example of the German preposition wegen and its variation in case government this article shows why available tools in corpus managers can be insufficient. An experiment is presented in which data obtained from annotated corpora are automatically labeled using a developed algorithm. An analysis of the corpus material showed that the preposition wegen primarily governs the genitive (about 60% of all uses). The dative, which is recognized by modern linguistics as a conventional variant, is relatively rare (5%). Additionally, the analysis also revealed that for 35% of nouns following wegen case cannot be determined, a phenomenon which is not mentioned in the corresponding dictionary entries of all lexicographic sources known to us. Thus it is not possible to identify the proportion of such underdetermined instances of case government using only the existing annotation of the analyzed corpora, since it did not include tags for nouns with no clear case assignment.
