Abstract:
We are currently living in an artificial, increasingly complex created system of discourse heavily base on socially constructed systems of language and digital technologies. How we use these technologies to advance the human condition in terms of our very existence makes us inherently cyborg in nature. With the increase in digital technologies in every aspect of day –to-day existence from your morning coffee to higher education, we have become increasingly dependent on our cyborg identities. This thesis, then, serves as a project that looks to understand how we have come to this point and to what extent our newly found cyborg identities can serve as the catalyst for progress particularly in education and the further production and transmission of human knowledge.

Gardner, Bruce Knight. "The Genesis calendar : the synchronistic tradition in Genesis 11." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.322470.

Full text
Abstract:
Six related problems in calendrical study are addressed. In Chapter 2, the West, inheritor of Rome, is seen as solar-calendrical, unfamiliar with Hebrew calendrics apart from the Church's specialised use of a luni-solar calendar for Paschal calculations. Ancient calendars were usually lunar-based, although most periodically synchronised with the seasons (luni-solar). These models are reviewed. In Chapter 3, ANE and Mediterranean calendars show improved international astronomy - historically, the province of priestly astronomers. Yet, in Chapter 4, the third problem is that Mishnaic and Talmudic evidence speaks of strict observance of New Moons and ad hoc intercalation. If mathematical schemes for the lunar month were in operation in the Hebrews' milieu by 380 BCE, why were they so far behind in rabbinical times? The solution is: they deliberately chose to rely on observation. This cannot exclude an earlier, more mathematical tradition (Segal, 1957). The fourth problem, in Chapter 5, is the 364-day solar calendar, associated with Jaubert (1953, 1957), supported by VanderKam (1979), and Davies (1983). By acknowledging the comparative calendrical realism in the Mishmarot, luni-solar and solar evidence is examined in the Primeval History where Creation and Flood evince synchronistic ideas. The fifth problem, in Chapter 6, is the 'Key of Enoch', the idea that Enoch's full age in Gen 5:23 represents 365 days. It is shown that Gen 11:10-26 contains a synchronistic calendar of 6 years and 84 years, similar to that hypothesised by Glessmer (1996) for the 'Otot. This covert scheme is called Genesis 11 Synchronistic Calendar. The sixth problem, in Chapter 7, is the pre-history of Qumran's synchronistic calendars, which the Genesis calendar illuminates. A failure to recognised the covert calendrical genre was caused by unfamiliarity with ancient calendrics, and a traditional reading of P's genealogies.

GENESIS is an existing software system for understanding and reasoning about language and vision. One of the modules in GENESIS uses about 1000 lines of Java code representing 31 rules to turn English sentences into a variety of more meaningful semantic representations. I reproduced the functionality of these rules by training the existing rule-learning program UNDERSTAND with 43 human-readable examples of English sentences and corresponding semantic representations, resulting in 18 rules. These new rules and the framework for training and using them provides GENESIS with a more robust and extensible semantic parser. This research also led me to make several improvements to UNDERSTAND, making it both more powerful and easier to train.

Abstract:
The main focus in this thesis is the understanding of Genesis 12: 1- 13: 4 and its development in the Genesis Apocryphon, one of the re-written Bible text, dealt with in this dissertation. Reading the Genesis Apocryphon, it draws your attention to firstly find out why, and secondly, to see how the author/s of this scroll re-wrote the above-mentioned passage in Genesis. The focus of the Genesis account is particularly on Abram leaving the Promised Land of Egypt, and consequently, what may be regarded as his ill behaviour towards Sarai, his wife, while they were in Egypt. Abraham's leave-taking of the Promised Land, and his behaviour towards his wife are unexpected, for Abram had followed God's calling, and had been promised Canaan for his and Sarai's offspring, However interfers, and lead Abram back on his steps.

Abstract:
This paper is a comparison of narrative in Genesis and Midrash Genesis Rabbah, using as a sample each text's version of the story of Cain and Abel. The paper begins with a survey of the study of Bible as literature and Midrash as literature, examining the work of Robert Alter, Meir Sternberg, Wesley A. Kort, Isaak Heinemann, Ofra Meir, David Stern and Jacob Neusner. Following this is a close reading and poetic analysis of the two primary texts, then a summary and comparison of narrative conventions and techniques. Narrative is examined according to the considerations of plot, character, narration and meaning. Further conclusions are drawn regarding the different portrayal of God in biblical and midrashic discourse, attitudes toward paradox and ambiguity, and strategies for achieving ideological and rhetorical goals.

Galarza, Ballester Mª Teresa. "Antiguan Creole: Genesis and Variation." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de València, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/77724.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates Antiguan Creole (AC), including its socio-history and sociolinguistics. Besides, it is concerned with the central strands of research in creolistics: the diachronic that focuses on creole genesis and creole development, and the synchronic that emphasizes the status of creoles as linguistic systems in their own right. The research has been organized in three parts. The first part is preparatory and concerns theoretical and methodological issues. It begins with a review of the literature concerning creole genesis and the creole continuum and examines the hypotheses to be tested. Next, it is concerned with research techniques and presents the fieldwork methods employed. The second part considers the following areas: the language and its context. It outlines the historical circumstances that led to the emergence of AC and then turns to the sociolinguistic situation of present-day Antigua. Subsequently, it offers a phonological and grammatical description of AC. The third part deals with the linguistic analyses that have been applied in order to test the hypotheses. This part provides a linguistic analysis of three linguistic features of AC that have been soundly investigated in other creole languages: palatal gliding after velars, copula system and its variability, and preverbal markers and past-marking by verb inflection. Firstly, to examine palatal gliding, the study begins with a historical account and then offers a synchronic description of the variable use of the palatal/stop glide complex. Secondly, copular and attributive predication is investigated from a historical perspective followed by a synchronic analysis of copula variability in present affirmative contexts. Thirdly, the research looks at the origin of the system encoding tense, mood and aspect and gives a synchronic analysis of the variable use of past inflection. Finally, the thesis is concluded by relating the findings of the previous chapters to issues concerning creole genesis on the one hand, and issues describing the speech community and the validity of the creole continuum model on the other. It is hoped that the present study offers a sound description of AC in order to demonstrate that AC deserves as much linguistic attention as other better known Caribbean creole languages.

McGrane, Paul Steven. "The genesis of Clough's poetry." Thesis, University of Oxford, 2008. http://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid:18be6cf8-b6fd-469e-8c88-5a1ae59b56ac.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the early poetry of Clough, written between 1830 and 1841, in the light of the information about his personal and intellectual life provided by published and unpublished manuscripts, essays, letters and diaries. More specifically, it sets out to determine the degree to which the seeds (thematic and formal) of Clough’s more mature work can be discerned in the earlier. Chapter One discusses the influence of Clough’s childhood reading, and particularly the heroic ideal as encouraged by his mother. It traces the way this developed, particularly under the historical ideas of Thomas Arnold and the Liberal Anglicans, and the fatalistic moral problems this created. Chapter Three considers Clough’s responses to the Oxford Movement. It teases out those elements that attracted Clough and those he came to reject, particularly in the light of Tractarian ideas about reserve, in relation to poetry, truth and personal behaviour. Chapters Two and Four provide chronological, text-by-text accounts of the Rugby and Balliol poems respectively, offering judgments about influences, dates and sources, and interpretations in the light of Chapters One and Three respectively. Chapter Two argues that much of the Rugby poetry reflects an escapist lament for the past and a failure of will to restore it. Chapter Three argues that Clough’s engagement with Tractarian ideas about reserved truth provides the key context for many of these poems. Chapter Five traces the way in which Clough’s early poetics, derived from Wordsworth via Thomas Arnold, were gradually replaced by his more mature, ambiguous approach which also emerged from his encounters with Tractarian reserve. Two appendices collect ten poems and poetic fragments omitted from Mulhauser’s standard edition; three additional variant texts for poems included by Mulhauser; and four previously unpublished letters to Clough from his friend WilliamTylden.

Turner, Laurence A. "Announcements of plots in Genesis." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 1989. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/3441/.

Full text
Abstract:
The narrative blocks which comprise Genesis are prefaced by statements which suggest ways in which the ensuing stories are likely to develop. This thesis sets out to investigate how these "Announcements" influence their respective plots. In Gen. 1: 28 the primaeval history is introduced by a three-fold imperative. The first part, "be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth" has some success in exerting its authority but is threatened by several factors. The second, "subdue the earth", is negated. The third, "have dominion over the animals", degenerates into a relationship of mutual hostility. Gen. 12: 1-3 contains two promises and a command. The promises of nationhood and land are threatened throughout the Abraham narrative and by the time of his death Abraham has a single heir and hardly any land. However, by the end of Genesis the ancestral family has grown to seventy people who are multiplying, but outside the land that has been promised to them. The command "be a blessing" makes hardly any impact because neither Abraham nor his descendants seem disposed to obey it. In the Jacob story the Announcement is found in 25: 23 and 27: 27-29, 39-40. Jacob's lordship over Esau is never seen. The promise of fertility/prosperity given to Jacob alone actually comes to both brothers thus negating the intended distinction. The prediction that the two will be divided is "fulfilled" but the expectation of division caused by strife is converted into separation within reconciliation. The two dreams of 37: 5-11 which govern the story of Jacob's family suffer different fates. The first is fulfilled several times but the second has three elements of which the first is fulfilled and the others are not. Unlike many scholars I conclude that Announcements influence their narratives in many different ways and that they are misleading indicators of how plots will develop. The reasons why this may be the case are explored in the Conclusion.

Abstract:

The success of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) combined with the detailed analysis of the small imperfections of the Cosmic Microwave Background blackbody spectrum lead to the conclusion that most of the matter content of our universe is made of some non-baryonic material, the dark matter!

In this thesis, we review the compiling indications of dark matter and the so-called freeze-out mechanism which may settle the relic density of the species in the framework of the standard Big Bang model. We also examine principally two methods of detection of dark matter, direct and indirect detection searches.

Let us stress that the Standard Model on its own is unable to provide enough aspirants for the role of dark matter. As a consequence, one has to dig into the tremendous domain of physics "Beyond the Standard Model" in order to have a chance to elucidate the problem of the missing mass.

In this thesis in particular, we consider the Inert Doublet Model (IDM) which includes an additional Higgs doublet, enclosing two neutral scalars candidates for dark matter. We invoke the Standard freeze-out mechanism for the production of dark matter. We get then dark matter candidates in two rather separate mass ranges, one between 40 and 80 GeV, the other one between 400 GeV and 1 TeV. We also show that dark matter annihilation at the galactic center can be at the origin of a gamma-ray flux which can be probed by the future GLAST experiment.

We address a low reheating temperature scenario for the genesis of dark matter in a Left-Right symmetric extension of the Standard Model. The candidate for dark matter is a MeV right-handed neutrino and we show that a baryon-dark matter interaction at the galactic center can be the source of the low energy positrons responsible for the 511 keV gamma-ray excess observed by the INTEGRAL experiment in the galactic bulge region.

Finally, prompted by the possibility to explain the baryon and dark matter rather similar abundances by one single "Matter Genesis" mechanism, we study a non-thermal production mechanism for dark matter. The framework is also Left-Right symmetric and dark candidate is a ~3 GeV right handed neutrino.

Merlini, A. E. M. "Podiform chromitite : genesis and alteration." Doctoral thesis, Università degli Studi di Milano, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2434/38305.

Full text
Abstract:
The renewed interest in chromite ore deposits is directly related to the increase of Cr price ruled by international market trends. The need of detailed knowledge of chemical features of chromitite ore bodies aims new projects focused on the understanding of chemical composition variation of such deposits. The present study, divided in two parts, has been focused on the understanding of the genesis and of the post-depositional alteration processes related to podiform chromitite ore bodies. The first part of the project focus on the major processes that influence chromitite genesis in Troodos ophiolite complex through the study of chromite chemical composition and on its related silicate inclusions that may preserve important information on parental magma source from which chromitite crystallized. Numerous silicate inclusions have been detected in chromite grains of different chromitite pods and in Cr-rich spinels of enveloping serpentinized host rock. The compositional features of silicate inclusions have been compared in term of major and REE elements with those of mineral matrix of fresh host rocks. Moreover chemical composition of selected included clinopyroxenes, were compared to experimental results of Gaetani et al. (2003) on hydrous peridotite partial melting REE contents of clinopyroxene inclusions of chromite of selected samples and in clinopyroxenes of the host rock have been measured in order to evaluate the role of a possible metasomatic process affecting chromite formation. Mineral REE concentrations were measured by means of Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS) using a Cameca IMS~4f ion microprobe at CNR-IGG (Pavia). The analysis of Troodos chromites associated to the study of silicate inclusions detected in chromitite pods as well as in host rock suggests a complex genesis probably related to an interaction between a hydrous boninitic melt, rich incompatible elements with a mantle lherzolite host rock. The second part of the study has been focused on post-depositional alteration processes that affected chromitite deposits of serpentinitic mélange in Kalkan ophiolite complex. In melange environments intense metamorphic alteration leads to major changes in chromite chemistry and to the growth of secondary phases such as ferritchromite and chlorite. In this study we investigate Kalkan hosted melange chromitites through textural and chemical analyses and we propose a new, post-serpentinization, reaction for ferritchromite and chlorite formation on the basis of involved phases: 2(Mg0.60Fe0.40)(Cr1.30Al0.70)O4 + 3/2(Mg2.57 Al0.32Fe0.11)Si2O5(OH)4 + H2O+1/12O2→ 7/6(Mg0.40Fe0.60)(Cr1.85Fe0.08Al0.07)O4+ 1/2(Mg9.18Fe0.34Al1.60Cr0.88)(Al2Si6)O20(OH)16. Results of textural analyses fit well with proposed reaction and show that reaction usually proceeds very close to completion. Alteration of chromite into ferritchromite is controlled by initial chromite to serpentine ratio. In chromitites high ratios prevent complete transformation of chromite into ferritchromite.

Higgins, Andrew S. "The genesis of J.R.R. Tolkein's mythology." Thesis, Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10369/7528.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis critically examines the earliest creative work of J.R.R. Tolkien, from which the first version of his mythology would emerge, as one coherent whole, rather than a series of individual creative acts. It argues that all aspects of Tolkien's creativity worked in a dialectic way to bring to life an invented secondary world the complexity of which fantasy literature had not seen before. In examining Tolkien's early creative process this study also offers an alternative profile and assessment of J.R.R. Tolkien, in contradistinction to the popular image of him as the elderly Oxford don, by critically reading him as a young man, student, budding philologist, soldier and World War One survivor. The scope of this thesis is a holistic examination of Tolkien's earliest creative output comprising poetry, prose, language invention and visual works and includes analysis of several of Tolkien’s early creative works which remain either unpublished or under-analysed. The study uses several contextual frameworks to offer an in-depth analysis of Tolkien’s early imaginative language invention, a neglected area in Tolkien studies, in spite of being at the core of Tolkien’s creative process. This thesis, therefore, is critically responding to a gap in Tolkien and fantasy literature scholarship, and offers new insights on the earliest writing phases of one of the most influential fantasy authors of the 20th century. The introductory chapter presents an overview of Tolkien criticism and defines the scope and range of the thesis. Chapter two examines how myth-making and language invention came together in Tolkien’s earliest works and argues that these two key elements become inextricably intertwined in the first full expression of Tolkien’s early mythology, The Book of Lost Tales. Chapter three explores the underlying religious underpinnings of Tolkien's mythology and his early attempt to employ overt Roman Catholic words and ideas into his emerging secondary world. This chapter goes on to demonstrate how Tolkien combined Roman Catholic ideas with elements of both pagan mythology and Victorian spiritualism into the fabric of his secondary world. Chapter four focuses on the role of visual expression in Tolkien's early mythology by reading two major groups of documents from this period: published drawings and paintings in which Tolkien expressed his early mythic ideas; and a group of visually oriented ‘para-textual’ elements, such as maps, charts and samples of Tolkien’s invented writing systems. These visual representations are explored as ‘trans-medial’ components which, along with layered narratives and language invention, make up the fabric of Tolkien’s invented secondary world. The last chapter of this thesis explores several ways Tolkien experimented with in order to link his growing body of mythology to the primary world. It examines Tolkien’s first ‘framework’ of transmission which relied on dreams, and dream vision, to attempt this link. The second half of this chapter explores how Tolkien developed a parallel narrative transmission ‘framework’ through the re-imagining and re-purposing of Germanic myth and legend. The thesis also includes a series of appendices: a chronology outlining Tolkien’s creative works from this time; a list of the books he borrowed from the Exeter College Library as an undergraduate; a detailed list of examples of Tolkien's early language invention from the time; and a transcript of a report on the literary talk Tolkien gave at Exeter College on the Anglo-Catholic poet Francis Thompson.

Abstract:
This dissertation has a specific objective: to explore the processes underlying the genesis and affirmation of coopetition as management innovation. We asked: what are the microfoundations of coopetition? In what ways is coopetition considered a management innovation? Is it possible to identify generally applicable criteria to recognize coopetition concept? And, finally, is coopetition a new way of looking at interfirm relationships, or more simply a reconceptualization of an old phenomena?

Kim, Dohyung. "A literary-critical analysis of the role of Genesis 38 within Genesis 37-50 as part of the primary narrative (Genesis - 2 Kings) of the Hebrew Bible." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/14568/.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis argues that the story of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 is to be read as the type narrative of the genealogical tensions within Genesis 37-50 and the Primary Narrative (Genesis- 2 Kings). Historical interpreters and literary critics have disagreed over whether this chapter is to be read as a disconnected episode or as a story integral to the surrounding narratives, often given the title 'the Joseph Story'. The argument here is that Genesis 38 does not simply belong to the socalled' Joseph Story' but is an essential partner to the surrounding chapters in the larger narrative running from Genesis to 2 Kings; the history of David's Judahite lineage. Genesis 38 indeed is about building Judah's and Tamar's family, which turns out to be at once Abraham's family and David's. From a narratological perspective, the main characters, Judah and Tamar, both play pivotal roles in this chapter and also in the wider story. Judah's character in Genesis 38 at a micro level represents him as the reluctant and despotic father of his family who is brought to accept his own failings. On the macro level, that is within Genesis 37-50, this transformation of Judah's character allows for his role to become that of family spokesman and leader of his brothers. While Joseph seems to be more powerful as the governor in Egypt, Judah ultimately has the more significant role as the deputy of Jacob's family in Canaan. Judah's character develops through the sequence 'Departure-Transition-Return'. In the end, Jacob's blessing of Judah (Gen. 49:8-12) is the most favourable he gives to any of his twelve sons. In retrospect, this creates for Judah the status of a fourth patriarch succeeding Jacob. As such, the argument is presented that the novella of Genesis 37-50 should not be labelled as it is traditionally 'the Joseph Story' or 'the Jacob Story'. Instead, it would be more accurate to call this unit The Story of Jacob and his Sons. Genesis 38 is situated in the novella as the epitome of the genealogical ambivalences that are the context for the whole Primary Narrative. Tamar, the sparring partner of her father-in-law Judah, shows a twofold role in her story in Genesis 38; she is both a matriarch within the Abrahamic lineage and at the same time the type of the marginal and widowed woman as mother in Israel. Surviving a period of trial as a childless widow, she finally succeeds in giving birth to the heirs of Judah by means of a plan that she herself devises. Tamar embodies all the key features of the role of the previous four matriarchs (Sarah, Rebekah, Leah and Rachel) and foreshadows the characteristics of women such as Ruth and Bathsheba who become the mothers of the Davidic line; they too are widows and marginal women within the Primary Narrative. Tamar can thus be presented as both the fifth matriarch. and also the representative of the later marginalised mothers of the Davidic line. Tamar is the crucial link. The characterisation of Judah and Tamar in Genesis 38 can be understood using the binary thematic-symmetrical structure and what I called the huckel-.lhajJed structure with its three themes: family building (+), shame (-) and deceit (-). These structures give this family a genealogical function which is typical in the Primary Narrative. Genesis 38, far from being some rather awkward insertion into the story of Joseph, is an integral part of ·the story of Jacob and his Sons'. Through the kind of genealogical twists which Genesis 38 epitomises, this wider story turns out, unexpectedly, not so much to be the story of Abraham's descendants, as the story of the Davidic line.

Stoll-Knecht, Anna. "The Genesis of Mahler?s Seventh Symphony." Thesis, New York University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3635308.

Full text
Abstract:

Mahler's Seventh Symphony stands out as one of the most provocative symphonic statements of the early twentieth century. Mahler's musical past is summoned in particular way in this work, knitting a complex web of associations that provide multiple hermeneutic leads. Yet despite the work's stunning qualities and a positive reception at the time of its first performance in 1908, the Seventh has progressively acquired the status of "problem child" in the Mahlerian canon. One of the main factors in this process is precisely its highly intertextual character, since the Seventh has been often heard either as "existing in the shadow" of the Sixth Symphony, or as "too reminiscent" of Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

By focusing on sketch materials previously considered as "discarded" - which are generally overlooked in sketch studies - my dissertation reveals unexpected connections between the Seventh and both the Sixth and Meistersinger. This shows that Mahler's compositional project was strongly grounded in a dialogue with works from the past, and that this referential aspect should be taken as an important key to interpreting the work.

My study sheds light on the complex genetic history of this work. First, it reveals that the composition of the Seventh was deeply entangled with that of the Sixth, since Mahler was already at work on the second, fourth and last movements of the Seventh in 1904 - while he was completing the outer movements of the Sixth.

Second, I argue that Mahler's open allusions to Meistersinger in the Finale are only the audible remainder of a deeper compositional interpretation of Wagner's music. In fact, Wagnerian references are more explicit in the sketches than in the final version, which suggests that Mahler, in the end, sought to occlude the audible "Wagnerizing" in the symphony.

My study proposes a reassessment of the least well known of Mahler's symphonies and shows how this specific work enriches our understanding of Mahler in a unique way. Finally, it invites us to explore the question of Mahler's reception of Wagner; and, by extension, of Mahler's view of his Jewish heritage, as well as of his relation to German culture.

Kirkby, David James. "On judgement : psychological genesis, intentionality and grammar." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9451/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores conceptions of judgement which have been central to various philosophical and scientific traditions. Beginning with Hume, I situate his conception of judgement within his overarching constructivist program, his science of man. Defending Hume from criticism regarding the naturalistic credentials of this program, I argue that Hume’s science of man, along with the conception of judgement which is integral to it, is appropriately understood as a forerunner to contemporary cognitive science. Despite this, I contend that Hume’s conception of judgement prompts a problem regarding the intentionality of judgement – a problem which he does not adequately address. In the second part of my thesis I show how the intentionality problem which Hume grapples with is also crucial, constituting a point of departure, for Kant’s transcendental undertaking. Following Kant’s reasoning, I illustrate how an original concern with this intentionality issue leads Kant to a distinct conception of judgement, according to which concepts only exist in the context of a judgement. Having arrived at Kant’s conception of a judgement, the remainder of the thesis is devoted to the issue of judgement forms. Kant’s postulation of these forms is closely related to his conception of judgement, and I seek to establish both how these forms ought to be understood and how they might be derived. In relation to this latter issue, I suggest that there may a role for contemporary work in Generative Grammar. Specifically, I suggest that it may be viable to understand the forms of judgement as grammatical in nature, thereby securing an interdisciplinary connection between a philosophy of judgement and the empirical investigation of grammar.

Davies, Matthew W. "Genesis, phototoxicity and degradation of retinal lipofuscin." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2008. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/54857/.

Full text
Abstract:
Retinal lipofuscin (RLF) is an intra-lysosomal accumulating waste product thought to be composed of oxidatively modified lipids and proteins. The substrates are proposed to be derived from old or damaged organelles and phagocytosed photoreceptor outer segments (POS). The material that is not degradable by retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) lysosomes accumulates within the cell and has the capacity to photogenerate reactive oxygen species. Consequently, the accumulation of RLF within RPE cells has been linked to cell dysfunction and the onset of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and other retinal degenerative diseases. This study sought to gain important insights into RLF composition and formation, to analyse the efficacy of optical filters in reducing photoexcitation of RLF and develop a nanomedicine with the potential to prevent RLF accumulating and/or degrade RLF accrued within RPE cells. Ex vivo RLF granules were isolated and analysed by mass spectrometry to determine their protein content, and Western blotting to probe for oxidatively modified components. RLF was found to contain a number of molecules adducted to lipid peroxidation products and minimal protein. In vitro models of RLF formation were designed and their physio-chemical characteristics analysed using: spectrophotometry/fluorometry, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting, HPLC and singlet oxygen production measurements. The in vitro models shared a number of characteristics with ex vivo RLF including: the presence of species adducted to lipid peroxidation products, a protein smear on an SDS-PAGE gel and the ability to photogenerate singlet oxygen. The capability of yellow-tinted optical filters to reduce the blue-light hazard of RLF towards RPE cells was analysed using cell viability assays and fluorescence microscopy. Results showed yellow-tinted filters provided significant protection to RLF-loaded RPE cells when irradiated with blue-light compared to a UV blocking filter or no filter. The suitability of a potential nanomedicine for use in abolishing RLF from RPE cells was assessed using: fluorescence and transmission electron microscopy, cell viability assays and flow cytometry. The study succeeded in identifying a carrier molecule that was localised to the lysosomes of RPE cells and an active component capable of degrading POS. When conjugated, the nanomedicine displayed the ability to degrade accumulated RLF. The findings presented within this study have enhanced our understanding of RLF composition and the key substrates involved in its formation. This has lead to proposals of how lipofuscin is associated with the onset of AMD. Studies conducted using UV and blue-light blocking optical filters may assist in the future design of intraocular lenses and aid ophthalmologists in advising cataract patients of the most appropriate lens for surgery. Preliminary work has been undertaken to develop a nanomedicine which has been demonstrated to eliminate RLF from the RPE in vitro. providing the basis for further development of a therapeutic strategy.

Torresin, Chiara <1996&gt. "Genesis and development of Chinese Scar Art." Master's Degree Thesis, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/10579/19245.

Full text
Abstract:
This work analyses the birth and development of Chinese Scar Art of late 1970s and early 1980s. With the end of the Cultural Revolution and the death of Mao Zedong, China went through a period of political and social loosening. This was also reflected in art and literature: following the motto "Seek the truth from facts", new scenarios opened up in the Chinese artistic and literary panorama, especially thanks to the works produced by young people returning from the Down to the Countryside Movement launched by Mao Zedong in 1968. They left little more than teenagers, returned as adults after more than ten years of forced labour and oppression in the countryside, they found a completely changed society. Afterwards, artists began to wonder the reason of what they had experienced, exposing in their works the reality of what they had seen and lived. The advent of Scar Literature first, and Scar Art later, upset public opinion. Based on realism and developed mainly in Sichuan, Scar Art included various currents: the art of the so-called Sichuan School of Painting (Native Soil Art, Melancholy Youth Painting, Contemplative Painting) and Life-stream Art. By analysing the artworks of artists such as Gao Xiaohua, Cheng Conglin, Luo Zhongli, He Duoling, Ai Xuan, Chen Danqing, this thesis researches how they exposed, and then tried to heal, the deepest and most intimate scars of an entire generation, denouncing what they had experienced or saw during the Cultural Revolution.
