Abstract:
This thesis proposes a model that can simulate multiple generations of genetic inheritance as a way of creating varied 3D content automatically. The proposed model should be less complex and less resource demanding than existing models while producing considerably better results than a model generating content by simple randomization. To achieve variation, the design of the base 3D model for character customization was based on different animation techniques, modifiers were based on anthropometry elements from advanced genetic simulations and known cognitive factors important for recognition. By use of ideas from other successful content generation and other implementations of 3D genetics, four genetic inheritance models where designed, implemented and evaluated. The results show that the proposed model produces very good and advanced looking results of genetic kinship, and can be used for generation of large numbers of content and all while using small amounts of resources.

Abstract:
The Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) was firstly proposed in 2014, and it has been highly studied and developed in recent years. It has obtained great success in the problems that cannot be explicitly defined by a math equation such as generating real images. However, since the GAN was initially designed to solve the problem in a continuous domain (image generation, for example), the performance of GAN in text generation is developing because the sentences are naturally discrete (no interpolation exists between “hello" and “bye"). In the thesis, it firstly introduces fundamental concepts in natural language processing, generative models, and reinforcement learning. For each part, some state-of-art methods and commonly used metrics are introduced. The thesis also proposes two models for the random sentence generation and the summary generation based on context, respectively. Both models involve the technique of the GAN and are trained on the large-scale dataset. Due to the limitation of resources, the model is designed and trained as a prototype. Therefore, it cannot achieve the state-of-art performance. However, the results still show the promising performance of the application of GAN in text generation. It also proposes a novel model-based metric to evaluate the quality of summary referring both the source text and the summary. The source code of the thesis will be available soon in the GitHub repository: https://github.com/WangZesen/Text-Generation-GAN.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study is to research Generation X (1964 – 1979), Y (1980 – 1995) and Z´s (1996 – 2012) needs and wishes for the workplace, what they have for positive and negative attitudes towards motivation, relations and work environment. The study was conducted by conducting qualitative research, doing a content analysis, and using previous research of generations. The qualitative research was carried out by doing interviews with 12 persons, out of which four were from each generation. Models such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs, the Two-factor theory and Reinforcement theory has been used in the study. The study has found that having knowledge of the complexity of generational differences can be a deciding factor if an organisation is successful or not. In many ways there is a consensus between the generations, but there are also differences. Regarding the participants needs and attitudes it was identified that participants from Generation Z are very driven by inner motivation and working towards a purpose. They are driven to create change in society through their work. Important needs are familiar relationships and constructive feedback. Participants from Generation Y was also driven by a purpose but was also motivated by outer motivations such as a salary that can reinforce their hard work. Participants from Generation X were the most driven by outer motivations. In conclusion, the study recommends organisations to invest resources in the complexity of generational knowledge in the workplace to understand to understand the employees needs in the workplace. If an understanding is managed is it possible to make use of the employees’ competence better and create successful teams, as well to prepare the workplace for the future multigenerational workplace.

El, Chababi Maria. "Are They Really Different? The Entrepreneurial Processes from the Perspective of Different Generations of Immigrant Entrepreneurs." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/31692.

Full text
Abstract:
Immigrant entrepreneurship is defined as business establishment and ownership among immigrants who arrive to a new host country. Immigrant entrepreneurship has become an important theme due to the increasing rates of immigration to developed countries, and its impact on their economic development. However it is also discredited and qualified as low value-added, rarely innovative, restricted to the ethnic communities and with stagnating growth potential. Following this debate, a new research stream affirms that immigrants should not be treated as one entity. Thus attention is shifting towards groups of immigrant entrepreneurs that were previously neglected in the literature. One such group consists of the second generation children of immigrants. Work to date provides ample investigation about immigrant entrepreneurs and their entrepreneurial process; however there is less research on similarities and differences in the entrepreneurial process experienced by first and second generation immigrant entrepreneurs. Despite some recent research on second generation immigrant entrepreneurs, this topic remains understudied. The objective of this study is to understand, from a multi-level perspective, how different generations of immigrant entrepreneurs experience the entrepreneurial process. Using a grounded theory approach and qualitative in-depth interviews, the findings indicate that first and second generation immigrant entrepreneurs experience the entrepreneurial process differently by facing different micro and macro level enablers and obstacles. They also recognize, evaluate and exploit opportunities differently. The extent to which they are embedded in specific environments affects their entrepreneurial experiences.

Berman, Alan. "Generative adversarial networks for fine art generation." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32458.

Full text
Abstract:
Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), a generative modelling technique most commonly used for image generation, have recently been applied to the task of fine art generation. Wasserstein GANs and GANHack techniques have not been applied in GANs that generate fine art, despite their showing improved GAN results in other applications. This thesis investigates whether Wasserstein GANs and GANHack extensions to DCGANs can improve the quality of DCGAN-based fine art generation. There is also no accepted method of evaluating or comparing GANs for fine art generation. DCGAN's, Wasserstein GANs' and GANHack techniques' outputs on a modest computational budget were quantitatively and qualitatively compared to see which techniques showed improvement over DCGAN. A method for evaluating computer-generated fine art, HEART, is proposed to cover both the qualities of good human-created fine art and the shortcomings of computer-created fine art, and to include the cognitive and emotional impact as well as the visual appearance. Prominent GAN quantitative evaluation techniques were used to compare sample images these GANs produced on the MNIST, CIFAR-10 and Imagenet-1K image data sets. These results were compared with sample images these GANs produced on the above data sets, as well as on art data sets. A pilot study of HEART was performed with 20 users. Wasserstein GANs achieved higher visual quality outputs than the baseline DCGAN, as did the use of GANHacks, on all the fine art data sets and are thus recommended for use in future work on GAN-based fine art generation. The study also demonstrated that HEART can be used for the evaluation and comparison of art GANs, providing comprehensive, objective quality assessments which can be substantiated in terms of emotional and cognitive impact as well as visual appearance.

Abstract:
Generative modeling is a major branch of machine learning attributed to designing models that can learn how data are generated and hence are able to synthesize novel data. With the recent advancements in deep learning, generative models have been improved significantly and successfully applied in a variety of domains, including computer vision, video generation, audio generation, and even in medical applications. Amongst different categories of generative models, GAN-based models [1] are by far the most well-known generative models applied to a variety of computer vision tasks due to their ability in synthesizing large images. Recent advances in likelihood-based models [2, 3], however, suggest that these models could alternatively be used instead of GAN-based methods while exhibiting huge benefits such as stable training and useful learned representation. These advancements enable likelihood-based models to generate images that are as realistic as those of GAN-based models. In this project, we study modern generative models and their categorization with focus on computer vision tasks. We study Glow [2], a recent flow-based generative model, in detail and extend its architecture for conditional image generation tasks. We evaluate the model against the most popular GAN-based counterpart [4] and show that this model could be an alternative to GAN-based models while enjoying advantages that are inherently lacking in GANs. We also show that by generalizing the operations in Glow [2] so that they are all conditioned on the features of the condition input, we are able to generate more visually appealing results compared to recent Glow-based conditional models [5, 6].

Abstract:
Machine Learning is a fast growing area that revolutionizes computer programs by providing systems with the ability to automatically learn and improve from experience. In most cases, the training process begins with extracting patterns from data. The data is a key factor for machine learning algorithms, without data the algorithms will not work. Thus, having sufficient and relevant data is crucial for the performance. In this thesis, the researcher tackles the problem of not having a sufficient dataset, in terms of the number of training examples, for an image classification task. The idea is to use Generative Adversarial Networks to generate synthetic images similar to the ground truth, and in this way expand a dataset. Two types of experiments were conducted: the first was used to fine-tune a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network for a specific dataset, while the second experiment was used to analyze how synthetic data examples affect the accuracy of a Convolutional Neural Network in a classification task. Three well known datasets were used in the first experiment, namely MNIST, Fashion-MNIST and Flower photos, while two datasets were used in the second experiment: MNIST and Fashion-MNIST. The results of the generated images of MNIST and Fashion-MNIST had good overall quality. Some classes had clear visual errors while others were indistinguishable from ground truth examples. When it comes to the Flower photos, the generated images suffered from poor visual quality. One can easily tell the synthetic images from the real ones. One reason for the bad performance is due to the large quantity of noise in the Flower photos dataset. This made it difficult for the model to spot the important features of the flowers. The results from the second experiment show that the accuracy does not increase when the two datasets, MNIST and Fashion-MNIST, are expanded with synthetic images. This is not because the generated images had bad visual quality, but because the accuracy turned out to not be highly dependent on the number of training examples. It can be concluded that Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks are capable of generating synthetic images similar to the ground truth and thus can be used to expand a dataset. However, this approach does not completely solve the initial problem of not having adequate datasets because Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks may themselves require, depending on the dataset, a large quantity of training examples.

Abstract:
The aim of synthetic data generation is to provide data that is not real for cases where the use of real data is somehow limited. For example, when there is a need for larger volumes of data, when the data is sensitive to use, or simply when it is hard to get access to the real data. Traditional methods of synthetic data generation use techniques that do not intend to replicate important statistical properties of the original data. Properties such as the distribution, the patterns or the correlation between variables, are often omitted. Moreover, most of the existing tools and approaches require a great deal of user-defined rules and do not make use of advanced techniques like Machine Learning or Deep Learning. While Machine Learning is an innovative area of Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science that uses statistical techniques to give computers the ability to learn from data, Deep Learning is a closely related field based on learning data representations, which may serve useful for the task of synthetic data generation. This thesis focuses on one of the most interesting and promising innovations of the last years in the Machine Learning community: Generative Adversarial Networks. An approach for generating discrete, continuous or text synthetic data with Generative Adversarial Networks is proposed, tested, evaluated and compared with a baseline approach. The results prove the feasibility and show the advantages and disadvantages of using this framework. Despite its high demand for computational resources, a Generative Adversarial Networks framework is capable of generating quality synthetic data that preserves the statistical properties of a given dataset.

Abstract:
Introduction: A population that can live and work longer has resulted in a wider range of generations being active in the workplace simultaneously and the diverse multi-generational work environment is a new challenge for human resource management. The most recent generation that is entering the job market is Generation Y, which is also referred to as Millennials. Currently, organizations and Human Resource departments are facing the issue of Generation Y entering the workforce and the issue at hand is considered to be real. The main focus in this paper is Generation Y and how their work attitudes in the workplace differ or resembles that of the previous generations. Purpose: With this research we want to primarily establish and present our observation of the differences in Generation Y and preceding generations’ work attitudes occurring in multi-generational workplaces, and later evaluate to what extent it is present in the work environment of the chosen business sectors in Sweden. Method: This thesis major applies the deductive approach. Both primary data and secondary data were collected during the research. Primary data was collected through interviews and the secondary data was gathered from Internet resources, books, published articles and journals. Conclusion: The differences between the generations’ work attitude are present within all of the aspects of work attitudes studied excluding individual vs. team orientation where the data was conflicting. Differences in some aspects were more and the potential to cause clash was noticeable and in other aspects there were less differences or personal factors found to be more important than generational factors.

Abstract:
The development in recent years' in our vicinity places new demands on the Swedish Armed Forces. The national defence is once again in focus and for the first time in a very long time the Swedish Armed Forces is facing a readmission and growth. Over the next ten years retirements among officers will be of significant size. At the same time the Swedish Armed Forces have had a hard time filling the positions at the Officers' Programme the last few years. The purpose of the study is to gain an understanding of the motives that existed for applying for the Officers' Programme. The study is conducted with an inductive approach, a qualitative method and inspired by Grounded Theory. The empirical data is obtained through interviews with first-year cadets at the Officers' Programme. During the coding process of the empirical data four main categories emerged which give an understanding of what was behind and motivated the cadets to apply for the Officers' Programme. These four main categories are Personal Ambition, Social Inclusion, Potential Development and External Influence. The conclusions in the study are that the cadets' motives and underlying factors for applying for the Officers' Programme are that an individual with great Personal Ambition senses that Social Inclusion as well as Potential Development are fulfilled in the Swedish Armed Forces. In this process, External Influence acts as a catalyst and drives them to apply to the Officers' Programme. The cadets express a desire to perform. They also express a desire to be part of a larger group and work for the best of the group. Furthermore, they express a desire to defend the Swedish freedom, our values and our democracy. In addition, the cadets express their appreciation of benefits such as sports in working hours, getting a paid academic education and the opportunity to make a career. They also have a need to get feedback on their work and emphasize the importance of the personal experience.

Abstract:
A new generation has established itself on the labor market with other characteristics and expectations of leadership than the generations before. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate managers’ experiences of leading employees who belong to Generation Y, i relation to other generations. The research questions covered what managers consider represents Generation Y as employees and how managers experience their leadership in relation to Generation Y. The study's results were analyzed in relation to theory about situational leadership in relation to theory about leaders’ followers. The method consisted of qualitative interviews of managers at organizations within different line of business in a larger city in Sweden. The results show that Generation Y as employees are considered to be self-centered and flexible, also to have demands on development, a personal leadership and to be assigned meaningful tasks. They are also described to have qualities that are suitable for the organization they work for and an uncertainty about whether their characteristics is because of their age or generation is expressed. Managers describe their leadership in relation to Generation Y as that it focuses on the needs of the individual and the context by building up a relationship with Generation Y as an employee.

Abstract:
Dále byly použity dvě další datové sady keramiky a snímků z MRI (BraTS). Nad těmito dvěma datovými sadami je provedeno zhodnocení vlivu generovaných dat na učení a zhodnocení přínosu pro zlepšení klasifikace a segmentace.

Abstract:

This report summarizes a Bachelor Degree Project in Integrated Product Development, carried out during the spring semester in 2007 by three students at the Product Design Engineering programme at the University of Skövde. The project was performed as an assignment for KinBag ab, a sister subsidiary to Kinnegrip ab in Lidköping, who develop, manufacture and market the golf bag KinBag, a bag with an integrated wheel carriage system. The purpose of the project was to redesign the golf bag to attract a target group consisting of golfers aged between 20 and 40.

The layout of the project was as follows: The project began with a feasibility study where different problems were identified with the basis of a market research which eventually was summarized in a dynamic specification of requirements. The feasibility study was followed by a generation of ideas which contained everything from sketches to simple mock-ups with an intensive amount of thoughtful brainwork and information gathering in between. This led

to the development of a number of design concepts, both on an overall level and on different parts of the golf bag. Even more detailed models were created and visualized in a three dimensional environment by means of a CAD program.

The report portrays the product design process and methods utilized in the project, as well as the final result - a full-scale operational prototype of the new generation of KinBag.

Abstract:
It has been a while that computers have replaced our record books, and medical records are no exception. Electronic Health Records (EHR) are digital version of a patient's medical records. EHRs are available to authorized users, and they contain the medical records of the patient, which should help doctors understand a patient's condition quickly. In recent years, Deep Learning models have proved their value and have become state-of-the-art in computer vision, natural language processing, speech and other areas. The private nature of EHR data has prevented public access to EHR datasets. There are many obstacles to create a deep learning model with EHR data. Because EHR data are primarily consisting of huge sparse matrices, these challenges are mostly unique to this field. Due to this, research in this area is limited, and we can improve existing research substantially. In this study, we focus on high-performance synthetic data generation in EHR datasets. Artificial data generation can help reduce privacy leakage for dataset owners as it is proven that de-identification meth- ods are prone to re-identification attacks. We propose a novel approach we call Improved Correlation Capturing Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Network (SCorGAN) to create EHR data. This work, leverages Deep Convolutional Neural Networks to extract and un- derstand spatial dependencies in EHR data. To improve our model's performance, we focus on our Deep Convolutional AutoEncoder to better map our real EHR data to our latent space where we train the Generator. To assess our model's performance, we demonstrate that our generative model can create excellent data that are statistically close to the inputdataset. Additionally, we evaluate our synthetic dataset against the original data using our previous work that focused on GAN Performance Evaluation. Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems have improved greatly in recent years. They are being used to understand all kinds of data. A practical use case for AI systems is to leverage their power to identify illnesses and find correlations between different conditions. To train AI and Machine Learning systems, we need to feed them huge datasets, and in the training process, we need to guide them so that they learn different features in our data. The more data an intelligent system has seen, the better it performs. However, health records are private, and we cannot share real people's health records with the public, whether they are a researcher or not. This study provides a novel approach to synthetic data generation that others can use with intelligent systems. Then these systems can work with actual health records and give us accurate feedback on people's health conditions. We then show that our synthetic dataset is a good substitute for real datasets to train intelligent systems. Lastly, we present an intelligent system that we have trained using synthetic datasets to identify illnesses in a real dataset with high accuracy and precision.

Abstract:
There exists a vast literature on nonuniform random variate generators. Most of these generators are especially designed for a particular distribution. However in pratice only a few of these are available to practioners. Moreover for problems as (e.g.) sampling from the truncated normal distribution or sampling from fairly uncommon distributions there are often no algorithms available. In the last decade so called universal methods have been developed for these cases. The resulting algorithms are fast and have properties that make them attractive even for standard distributions. In this contribution we describe the concept of Automatic random variate generation where these methods are used to produce a single piece of code in a high level programming language. Using a web-based front-end to such a program this is an easy-to-use source for researchers and programmers for high quality generators for a large class of distributions. Using our UNURAN library we have implemented such a system, which is accessable at http://statistik.wu-wien.ac.at/anuran.

Abstract:
Artificial music generation is a rapidly developing field focused on the complex task of creating neural networks that can produce realistic-sounding music. Generating music is very difficult; components like long and short term structure present time complexity, which can be difficult for neural networks to capture. Additionally, the acoustics of musical features like harmonies and chords, as well as timbre and instrumentation require complex representations for a network to accurately generate them. Various techniques for both music representation and network architecture have been used in the past decade to address these challenges in music generation. The focus of this thesis extends beyond generating music to the challenge of controlling and/or conditioning that generation. Conditional generation involves an additional piece or pieces of information which are input to the generator and constrain aspects of the results. Conditioning can be used to specify a tempo for the generated song, increase the density of notes, or even change the genre. Latent walking is one of the most popular techniques in conditional image generation, but its effectiveness on music-domain generation is largely unexplored. This paper focuses on latent walking techniques for conditioning the music generation network MuseGAN and examines the impact of this conditioning on the generated music.

Abstract:
This experiment was designed to give further understanding of the underlying factors which influence group idea generation. The first objective of this study was to compare the impact of using computer technology and traditional technologies for creating ideas. The effectiveness of three idea generating techniques, original brainstorming, nominal group technique, and electronic brainstorming were considered. It was, however, hypothesized that electronic brainstorming would outperform the nominal group technique and original brainstorming regardless of the length of time provided. The second objective of this study was to probe how subjects in different idea generating conditions discerned their performance during and after sessions. It was expected that subjects in the original brainstorming groups would perceive that they produce more ideas and they would be more satisfied with results and the process. An ANOVA with a 3x2 factorial design was planned for the study. The independent variables for the study were types of group and types of session. Yet, on account of small sampling size an inferential analysis was precluded. A descriptive analysis was followed. The analysis of five dependent variables, quality, originality, practicality, numbers of nonoverlapping ideas, and perceptions showed that there were no significant differences among three idea generation techniques regarding the length of time provided. However, a quantity variable showed that numbers of nonoverlapping ideas were increased as the length of time were prolonged in six idea generating conditions.

Abstract:
Within a short time, Sweden will be undergoing major changes on the labor market regarding generations. The Baby boom generation will retire soon and the labor market will mostly consist of Generation X and Y. By leaving the labor market, the Baby boomers are taking their knowledge with them; consequently there will be a huge void, which can be difficult to fill by the next generations. However, Generation X and Y have other knowledge, which the Baby boomers lack. Characteristic values are found among the generations. The Baby boomers value hard work and loyalty while Generation Y value a balance between the private and working life. Our purpose is to examine whether generational differences in the workplace on values and attitudes exist. Values can be similar to the organizational culture because it helps the employees to gain a sense of identity and belonging in the workplace. This leads to common goals and visions, which eventually increases productivity. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used, which was implemented through three interviews and 68 surveys on both the customer service and bank office. The study shows that there are not major differences between the values and attitudes of the generations within the examined bank. The organizational culture is strong, leading to values being hidden. Furthermore, the result shows that the culture is stronger than the traits, which are characteristic of each generation. Lastly, the results indicate a number of the theoretical values do not agree with what the employees responded. A notable difference between the two departments can be explained by the size of the working group and their own organizational culture.

Abstract:
During the last decade, the Internet usage has been growing at an enormous rate which has beenaccompanied by the developments of network applications (e.g., video conference, audio/videostreaming, E-learning, E-Commerce and real-time applications) and allows several types ofinformation including data, voice, picture and media streaming. While end-users are demandingvery high quality of service (QoS) from their service providers, network undergoes a complex trafficwhich leads the transmission bottlenecks. Considerable effort has been made to study thecharacteristics and the behavior of the Internet. Simulation modeling of computer networkcongestion is a profitable and effective technique which fulfills the requirements to evaluate theperformance and QoS of networks. To simulate a single congested link, simulation is run with asingle load generator while for a larger simulation with complex traffic, where the nodes are spreadacross different geographical locations generating distributed artificial loads is indispensable. Onesolution is to elaborate a load generation system based on master/slave architecture.

Abstract:
My work is my critique of a generation that is dependent upon the conveniences of consumerism. Consumerism in our culture is almost inescapable. I do not condemn or celebrate this way of life because it is the only one I know. There are many things about consumerism that I hate such as the waste it creates or class system it creates. At the same time I enjoy the ease and the comforts that it allows us. This is one of the problems with our generation; we do not take a stand either way because we are so dependent on consumerism. No matter how self reliant we may think we are our culture still desires consumerism.

Abstract:

A segmented market, according to traditional methods, appears increasingly difficult in mature consumer markets. A common explanation is that the mature markets are often characterised by over-supply which results in a great variety of choices for the consumer. Furthermore, the consumer of today has a more complex and flexible purchase behaviour which is difficult to catch. This makes consumer segmentation difficult. International studies indicate that dividing consumers into generation cohorts might be advantageous in understanding consumers of today. For actors in the marketplace it is important to know their target groups to be able to attract them. The purpose of the present study is to describe and compare the generations, Generation Y (1978-1994) and 55 plus (1938-1953), with a starting point in a basic model of the purchase process and purchase behaviour. A secondary purpose of the study is to give some normative recommendations.

The empirical part of the study focuses on the Swedish consumer market. The study is constructed by a combined design of methods. The initial part is qualitative and contains 16 in-depth interviews. After completing the interviews, a literature review was carried out. The last part of the empricial data collection is quantitative and based on a survey.

The study shows differences in abilities and procedures to handle great information quantities and to avoid “information overload”. The two generations show different purchase behaviour in many respects, driven by different needs. Generation Y is more driven by social risk and social influence than the 55 plus cohort. Generation Y is tempted by the “right” brands, that are socially accepted and considered ”hot”. The younger generation endeavours to buy at the lowest price and therefore they have in general a low and often false loyalty vis-à-vis the stores. 55 plus, however, have in common a high and true loyalty vis-à-vis the stores. These older consumers are attracted by, and to great extent use, stores and employees which are regarded as competent and service-minded. In conclusion, generation Y could to a high degree be considered as emotional when choosing products but rational in their choice of distribution channel. 55 plus, on the other hand, is more rational when choosing products but emotional in their choice of distribution channel.

Based on these result, we propose that the two generation cohorts should be approached in different ways, thus questioning a standardised mass marketing approach. Moreover, the study indicates that traditional marketing methods should be questioned and more focus should be given to emerging communication channels, for instance Internet-based communication channels, brand ambassadors and product placement.

Keywords: Consumer behaviour, Generation Y, Generation 55 plus, Market communication, Segmentation, generation cohorts.

Abstract:
Employment figures and population demographics indicate that Baby Boomers (1946-1964) hold a small and shrinking share of school principalships. The oldest Baby Boomer principals began to retire during the middle of the 1990s, and their void created an opportunity for younger Baby Boomers and members of Generation X (1965-1981) to replace them. The youngest Baby Boomer principals are beginning to retire, and Millennial Generation (1982-2000) administrators are stepping up to fill the ranks. Millennial Generation educators have been in the field long enough to develop the requisite classroom teaching experience, graduate school master's level education, and training needed to obtain administrative positions. Principals develop their leadership skills through the assistant principal experience, and because Millennials are a relatively new addition to the ranks of assistant principals, little is known about their perceptions' of the challenges and rewards of the principalship. Generational differences between Generation Xers and Baby Boomers have been investigated by other researchers, but this study was unique because it directly compared Generation X and Millennial Generation assistant principals. The study explored Generation X and Millennial Generation assistant principals' perceptions of the challenges and rewards of the principalship. This qualitative study involved 12 assistant principal participants, and the analysis of the coded interview transcript data produced major coded themes with valuable implications regarding the participants' motivations, career ambitions, professional development needs, and their perceptions' of the principalship. This study indicated that Generation X and Millennial Generation assistant principals have distinct similarities and differences, and school division superintendents who understand the generational differences may make more informed leadership and personnel decisions about their future principals. The findings and implications were intended to assist superintendents and personnel/human resource directors in their efforts to recruit, select, support, and ultimately promote Generation X and Millennial Generation assistant principals to the principalship. The findings of this study suggested opportunities for researchers to continue the investigation of the topic.

Abstract:

Background: The Swedish labour market is facing a major change. The members of the Record-generation (born 1945-54) are about to leave their workplaces, while the young MeWe-generation (born in the 1980’s) is ready to start their careers. While each generation is characterized by its own, unique apporach to life and work, researchers claim a shift of generations in the workforce also will change the attitudes in organizations. Thus, the question is whether, and how, the fundamental differences in attitudes of the generations also are reflected in their approach to leadership and a manager's role in an organization.

Aim: The purpose of our paper is to examine and compare the attitudes towards leadership among some members of MeWe-generation and some members of the Record-generation. This aim was chosen by us in order to see how the demands, expectations and aspirations of managers may be in for a change when the younger generation is ’taking control’ over the organizations.

Method: We have carried out 14 interviews, with seven respondents from each of the two generations. This means we have a qualitative approach. Through our study, we studied each generation's attitude about leadership, related to three themes: traits, relationships and power/influence in the decisions made.

Results: We found significant differences in attitudes towads leadership among the Record-generation respondents and the MeWe-generation respondents. The differences can be summarized to that the MeWe generation has a more relationship-oriented approach to leadership while the record generation is more organization-oriented. This means that the MeWe-generation whishes a manager to create a good atmosphere in the workplace, while the Record-generation wants a manager who creates, and maintains, structure and order.

Abstract:
Magister Commercii - MCom
Diversity management in South Africa, post 1994, has increasingly become a focal area when considering strategic human resource issues in the corporate environment. To date "traditional" diversity topics have largely centered around the differences in employees' race, culture, gender, language and disability status, and scores of academic and management text has been produced in this regard since the birth of democracy in this country, sixteen years ago. Whilst change on the political front has been vanguard, resultant societal change has largely been ignored by corporate South Africa. The era of equal opportunity has led to changes in income levels, consumer buying power and demographics and has paved the way for a new breed of human capital in the workplace. One particular breed, having been raised in the New South Africa, has shared experiences and backgrounds which are completely different to that of their parents and their grandparents. Their common location in history has dramatically shaped their belief systems and their expectations of life in general, with work life being a major facet thereof. These generational differences has resulted in tensions in the workplace where it has become evident that employees of varying ages are finding it difficult to 'speak the same language'. The concept of generational diversity has its roots in Generational theory, the underlying hypothesis on which this study rests. This hypothesis, as postulated by American researchers, Strauss and Howe (1993), states that every generation has a common set of beliefs and behaviours, a common location in history and a common perceived membership. These in turn shape the generational group's core values and view on life and work. Authors such as Zemke, Raines & Filipczak (2000), Kupperschmidt (2000), and Lancaster & Stillman (2003) point out that understanding the differences that exist between employees of varying ages can potentially enhance organizational culture, increase productivity and minimize conflict. However, very little academic research on this topic has been undertaken in the South African context, and it is against this backdrop that this exploratory study endeavoured to test the hypothesis in a local context. The study surveyed a national group of employees of varying ages, who work for a large financial services organization, headquartered in the Western Cape. The major aim was to develop a hierarchy of work values, suggesting a relative ranking and ordering of important workplace attributes, per generational cohort to either support or disprove the hypothesis.

Telling stories about a family's common past solidifies its sense of community, and enriches member's sense of identity and belonging. In preindustrial times this information flowed orally thanks to continuous and prolonged cohabitation, but the dispersion of kinship in modern society has severed the ties between the generations. On-line communities can help restore these links by providing virtual spaces whose design specifically encourages storytelling. In order to arrive at this design, this thesis (1) surveys the importance and characteristics of family storytelling, (2) discusses the procedures used by oral historians and folklorists for story elicitation, and (3) analyzes a number of existing systems in terms of the above theoretical background. This thesis concludes with a series of guidelines for the design and implementation of communities for family storytelling. Different ways of indexing and accessing stories are discussed, and appropriate representations and interfaces that facilitate the storytelling process are presented.

Abstract:
We systematically optimize the yield of XUV pulses at 93 2 eV with respect to experimentally adjustable parameters such as gas pressure, focal position of laser beam and interaction length by using few cycle laser pulses. We demonstrate carrier-envelope phase dependence of the optimized XUV spectrum, consistent with the formation of isolated attosecond pulses. We present the progress to- wards a newly developed attosecond beamline and describe its essential parts in detail. We perform initial experiments on photoelectrons detection. This work will contribute further for optimizing the setup for attosecond streaking experiments.

Abstract:
Following the introduction of new laws and regulations to ensure data protection in GDPR and PIPEDA, interests in technologies to protect data privacy have increased. A promising research trajectory in this area is found in Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), an architecture trained to produce data that reflects the statistical properties of its underlying dataset without compromising the integrity of the data subjects. Despite the technology’s young age, prior research has made significant progress in the generation process of so-called synthetic data, and the current models can generate images with high-quality. Due to the architecture’s success with images, it has been adapted to new domains, and this study examines its potential to synthesize financial tabular data. The study investigates a state-of-the-art model within tabular GANs, called CTGAN, together with two proposed ideas to enhance its generative ability. The results indicate that a modified training dynamic and a novel early stopping strategy improve the architecture’s capacity to synthesize data. The generated data presents realistic features with clear influences from its underlying dataset, and the inferred conclusions on subsequent analyses are similar to those based on the original data. Thus, the conclusion is that GANs has great potential to generate tabular data that can be considered a substitute for sensitive data, which could enable organizations to have more generous data sharing policies.

"Prediction and analytics of operating parameters on thermoelectric generator energy generation." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/3872.

Abstract:
The efficient use of energy at all stages along the energy supply chain and the utilization of renewable energies are very important elements of a sustainable energy supply system, specially at the conversion from thermal to electrical energy. Converting the low-grade waste heat into electrical power would be useful and effective for several primary and secondary applications. One of the viable means to convert the low-grade waste heat into electrical energy is the use of thermoelectric power conversion. The performance of thermoelectric generators, subjected to thermal effects, can vary considerably depending on the operating conditions, therefore it is necessary to measure and have a better understanding of the characteristics and performance of the thermoelectric generator. It is important to understand the thermoelectric generator’s dynamic behavior and interaction with its operating environmental parameters. Based on this knowledge, it is then significant to develop an effective mathematical model that can provide the user with the most probable outcome of the output voltage. This will contribute to its reliability and calculation to increase the overall efficiency of the system. This thesis provides the transient solution to the three-dimensional heat transfer equation with internal heat generation. It goes on to describes the transfer and generation of heat across the thermoelectric generator with dynamic exchange of heat. This solution is then included in a model in which the thermal masses and the operating environmental parameters of the thermoelectric generator are factored in. The resulting model is created in MATLAB. The comparison with experimental results from a thermoelectric generator system confirms the accuracy of the artificial neural network model. This thesis also presents two practical applications, the prediction of the input parameters with a given output voltage, and sensitivity analysis designed for the model. This is to enable users to customize the thermoelectric generator for their requirements. This allows for better usage of resources eventually.

Abstract:
As the digital age matures, we seek to understand the Generation X and Generation Z, precisely their visual perception and emotional responses to the different dimensions of online aesthetics - classical and expressive. The development of digital products and environments with a specific user experience in mind is beneficial for creating the most suitable outcome. Emotional responses to the different aesthetics can have an impact on consumers' behaviour as well as on their opinion and the image of the digital content presented. Previous research has proven that age has an impact on visual perception and online experience, but little is known about differences in needs and approaches between the important web user groups of Generation X and Generation Z when presented with a web interface. Our research focuses on their emotional responses and initial reactions towards website interfaces that have been influenced by a specific aesthetic style and seeks to find observations to improve the online experience of these two generations. The study examined individuals from Generation X and Generation Z by conducting semi-structured interviews. We focused on two aesthetic extremes - classical design and expressive design. Participants were shown websites with high levels of the two contrasting aesthetics and asked to review their feelings caused by the websites and thoughts about the designs. Three categories of sites were used to expand the scope of websites: e-commerce, articles, and portfolios. This study found no major concrete differences between the generations and how they perceived the aesthetic extremes and reacted to them. Both generations preferred web interfaces with classical aesthetics. However, we have identified some critical structural needs that our participants have expressed irrelevant to the aesthetic direction of the page. Pages with entertainment value benefited from a more expressive aesthetic and the sites where functionality is a higher priority benefitted from a more classical aesthetic. We also came to the conclusion that none of the generations preferred a single specific aesthetic direction, therefore, no definite aesthetic preferences for either generation could be drawn. Nonetheless, small differences in emotional responses were defined. Generation Z was more open towards more expressive and visually engaging sites compared to Generation X which sought comfort in their online experience and therefore preferred classical aesthetics.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Code generation in a compiler is commonly divided into several phases: instruction selection, scheduling, register allocation, spill code generation, and, in the case of clustered architectures, cluster assignment. These phases are interdependent; for instance, a decision in the instruction selection phase affects how an operation can be scheduled. We examine the effect of this separation of phases on the quality of the generated code. To study this we have formulated optimal methods for code generation with integer linear programming; first for acyclic code and then we extend this method to modulo scheduling of loops. In our experiments we compare optimal modulo scheduling, where all phases are integrated, to modulo scheduling where instruction selection and cluster assignment are done in a separate phase. The results show that, for an architecture with two clusters, the integrated method finds a better solution than the non-integrated method for 39% of the instances. Our algorithm for modulo scheduling iteratively considers schedules with increasing number of schedule slots. A problem with such an iterative method is that if the initiation interval is not equal to the lower bound there is no way to determine whether the found solution is optimal or not. We have proven that for a class of architectures that we call transfer free, we can set an upper bound on the schedule length. I.e., we can prove when a found modulo schedule with initiation interval larger than the lower bound is optimal. Another code generation problem that we study is how to optimize the usage of the address generation unit in simple processors that have very limited addressing modes. In this problem the subtasks are: scheduling, address register assignment and stack layout. Also for this problem we compare the results of integrated methods to the results of non-integrated methods, and we find that integration is beneficial when there are only a few (1 or 2) address registers available.
