Full textThe main aim of this work is to discover gender differences in value orientation of today's youth, and to analyze developmental changes and ethnicity in terms of the same. The research is based on the assumption that a person’s gender identity influences his or her value orientation, thus gender stereotypes are adopted also on the level of what is preferred by the individual, or seen as important in life.
In the research participated 118 young people from the Gymnasium in Subotica. The data about gender identity and value orientation was collected by a questionnaire, which was created in favour of this research. In the first part the questionnaire offered a list of gender related traits in order to define the participant’s gender identity. The second part was a list of opposite values, which was adopted from Jensen’s research.
The results confirm the general findings of Jensen and reveal that there is significant gender effect present in adolescent’s value orientation in case of eight opposite values. It also highlights that age difference between the participants doesn’t contribute significantly to a higher or lower visible gender difference in value orientation, but conversely it shows that ethnic difference is an important factor in it.

Full textGender inequality continues to impose limitations on the progress of women in a number of ways. The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine how female administrators have experienced gender inequality in the workplace in order to gain a better understanding of the barriers they have encountered. This study explored participants’ administrative background, experiences as an administrator, challenges encountered related to gender inequality, and what was learned (i.e., coping, strategies to address gender inequality). The findings revealed the main challenges participants’ encountered in the workplace were based on pay and promotion. Through this study, female administrators were given an outlet to express their concerns regarding gender inequality and provide their input concerning strategies that may be effective in addressing gender inequality in the workplace.

Full textThis dissertation investigates the relationship between marital history and individuals’ retirement resources, namely Social Security, employer-sponsored pensions, and non-housing wealth. Prior research provides a foundation for understanding marriage’s positive relationship to retirement security, and suggests that marriage is financially beneficial and can even lessen some external factors that would otherwise damage a family’s financial situation. Yet changing demographics, with fewer people in first marriages and rising numbers of individuals experiencing divorce and choosing to remain unmarried, suggest our understanding of this relationship for today’s retirees may be limited. The purpose of this research is to identify which aspects of complex marital histories are associated with individuals’ retirement security, paying particular attention to gender differences. Using data from nine waves of the Health and Retirement Study (1992-2008), four facets of marital history are examined: marriage type, frequency, timing, and duration. Currently married and currently unmarried respondents are separated during the analyses in order to adequately capture the association between previous marital events and retirement resources. The results indicate that marital history is associated with Social Security, employer-sponsored pensions, and non-housing wealth differently, and that these relationships vary by gender and current marital status. The findings provide support for the argument that marital history, and in particular marital duration, has a strong relationship to retirement resources. Contrary to expectations, currently married women with longer marriages have less Social Security and pension income than married women who experienced shorter marriages. Marital history has no relationship to the retirement security of married men. For the unmarried groups, never married men have the lowest odds of receiving an employer-sponsored pension and have less non-housing wealth than both divorce and widowed men. Unmarried women’s retirement security is associated with the type of disruption experienced; women with multiple past marriages have more resources if they are currently widowed but less if they are currently divorced. Further study is needed to understand how and why complex marital history factors have a relationship to retirement finances, and to expand our knowledge about certain understudied populations such as remarried women and never married men.

Full textThe purpose of the present study was to test the Emotional Stability dimension of the Big Five factors of personality traits theory to predict or explain a relationship with Employee Organizational Commitment, when the relationship between Emotional Stability (ES) and Employee Organizational Commitment (EOC) was moderated by Gender and AgeGroup. Public domain secondary data from the General Social Survey were used in the study. The three age groups under investigation were Millennials, Generation X, and the Boomer generation. A hierarchical linear multiple regression model was applied to test the hypotheses. The statement of the omnibus null hypothesis (H 0) was that the Emotional Stability dimension of the Big Five factor model of personality traits theory did not have the ability to predict EOC. Main hypotheses stated that there was not a statistically significant relationship between the moderated independent variable (IV) and the dependent variable (DV). Results of the full model showed that the theory-testing null hypothesis (H0) was not supported (p < .05), and the Boomer generation contributed most to the DV (Beta = -.511). Recommendations were made for future research.

This action research is to explore the gender politice in traditional folk customs by working with a class of grade of four students in an elementary school. In order to help students discover the gender relations in and the impact on folk customs and activities, a teaching plan which integrates concepts of gender equity education into courses of folk customs is designed. The themes of the folk courses are two folk customs, giving birth and getting married. The courses intend to explore three unfair gender relationships: the dichotomy of gender, the women by otherized, and the concept of having a son to carry on the family name. During the teaching process, I found that I myself still keep integral and monolithic ideas of ‘women’. Also, there is unfair relationship by means of the operation of gender politics. In the research process, first, students see the gender dichotomy. After the course, most of them have learned to respect people’s choice about the gender. Second, though research participants do not care the female status in folk customs, they are willing to care about women’s feelings, and even provide them support to change their status. At last, students can easily identify the ingrained value of having a son to carry on the family name and find out it is the origin of gender discrimination. As a whole, students actively take a part in the course, and provide living experience instead of passively following the classroom teaching. As a researcher, course designer and a teacher, instead of putting emphasis on personal technical phase, I have learned to have deeper understanding in folk customs and the structures of the gender relationships.

This thesis, titled “Cultural Research on Yuan Mei’s Sui Yuan Shi Hua”, is to probe the composition of Sui Yuan literature community and its impact on the cultural form and literature development. The analysis into Sui Yuan Shi Hua is conducted from four aspects, “literature broadcast”, “readers’ acceptance”, “literature reputation”, and “gender identification”, by means of Harold Bloom’s “impact anxiety” theory, Robert Escarpit and Pierre Bourdieu’s theories in Literature Sociology, Roland Barthes’ mythology, acceptance aesthetics theory, and feminism theories. The issues concerning “literature broadcast”, “readers’ acceptance”, “literature reputation”, and “gender identification” analyzed in this thesis is expected to initiate a new realm for research on literature of Ming and Ching Dynasty. This thesis contains six chapters: Chapter 1 discusses the critique nature of verse, and indicates the relationship between verse and discourse. Discourse analysis is employed to discover the close linkage between Sui Yuan Shi Hua and “literature reputation” and strongly imply the “literature broadcast”. In this chapter, research methodology, research direction, and research scope are introduced, and areas that cultural research can supplement traditional research are discussed. Chapter 2 describes the formation and structure of Yuan Mei’s Shing Ling Shuo, and further proposes a new interpretation. Given the factors of “impact anxiety”, “model competition”, and “expansion of literature community”, Shing Ling Shuo tends to respect the readers, promote common customs, and emphasize diversity. The popular appraise gained from the readers has strengthened its foundation in verse, expanded verse writing community, and resulted in positive interaction with the readers. Chapter 3 analyzes the publishing culture from a practical perspective. The discussion on publication, marketing, and sponsorship of Sui Yuan Shi Hua concludes the broadcast and social contact functions of the book, as well as its significant influence on Sui Yuan cultural undertaking. In addition, the analysis provides keen observation to the literature form and laymen culture. Chapter 4 discusses the relationship between garden and literature broadcast. The analysis on utilization of Sui Yuan garden space indicates the advertisement function of Sui Yuan that offers literature exhibit, verse event, image broadcast, and publishing business. A unique linkage is found between garden and “literature reputation”. Chapter 5 discusses the formation and characteristics of Sui Yuan female community from a gender perspective. Yuan Mei devoted to awarding female literature, yet the in-depth analysis of the females reveals the hidden social and power issues. Male, as readers, have exhibited crisscrossing agitation and gender identification on female’s talent, gender, virtue, and fate. This chapter reexamines the commonly perceived edge focus and diversity concept delivered by Shing Ling Shuo from feminism perspective. Chapter 6, the last chapter, begins with discussion on an unexpected reader – Critique on Sui Yuan Shi Hua, to discuss the formation of Yuan Mei’s Sui Yuan cultural undertaking and success factors. This chapter also reviews the hidden ideology and blind spots in Yuan Mei’s broadcast-oriented culture from mythology perspective. The conclusion discusses a series of changes taken place in the literature circle that raised controversial issues concerning “literature broadcast”, publishing, reader, and gender during Ming and Ching Dynasty. The discussion is expected to interpret the text and writers of that era in a more comprehensive manner.

The purpose of this study is to explore the current gender representation brought by cartoons in Taiwan. Taking the cartoons rated top 10 during summer vacation in 2015 as examples, the study is processed from different aspects such as country of origin, sex ratio, role’s clothing, role’s trait, occupation and recreation to discuss the stereotype implied by cartoon. The research shows, the sex ratio of males to females is gradually becoming equal, as about 6:4, and if they are differentiated by nationality, overall the ratio of males to females is 6:4. The overall sex ratio among Korean cartoons is about 7:3. Among them, the most disparate ratio shows in cartoons from the United States, as the sex ratio of males to females is nearly 8:2, and only the sex ratio of males to females in British cartoons is 4:6, as women are more than men. In aspect of traits, males are easier to show positive images than women, and the most positive images were shown in British cartoons. The most negative characteristics and images were shown in the Korean cartoons, and Asian cartoons from Japan and Korea have more inner qualities than cartoons from Europe and the United States. Over all, they already appeared to have traditional images different from the ones in the past. As for the occupational distribution, the occupation of male roles separates very widely, as they often serve in high-level positions or being active in the public domain, but female role's occupation could not get rid of traditional constraints. Particularly, in British and Korean cartoons, there is also phenomenon of fathers carrying works and housekeeper in the same time, it shows on occupation, there is a trend that men are going back to home. As on recreation, women began to attach importance to life quality and stopped staying only indoors. However, men would also pay attentions on recreations that require patience and carefulness. On recreations, cartoons no longer stick to the traditional framework of gender.

The purpose of this study is to explore the university students’ gender role orientation(GRO), gender egalitarianism attitude(GEA), and fear of success(FOS). The participants were 607 university students from 16 classes in Taiwan. The instruments used in this study included GRO Scale, GEA Scale, and FOS Scale. The statistical methods used to analyze the data were one-way MANOVA, two-way MANOVA, chi-squared analysis, Pearson product- moment correlation, canonical correlation and stepwise multiple regression. The important discoveries are stated separately as follow: a. No discrepancies exist in FOS of university students from different ranking of siblings, mother’s employment, and departmental deviance. There is no significant difference of FOS interaction among different sex and GRO. b. FOS of male in family life and life delight is higher, but FOS of female in courtship is higher. c. FOS of university student without boy/girl friend in courtship is higher than FOS of university student wih boy/girl friend. d. There are significant differences of spouse interrelation, interpersonal relationship, and total score of FOS interaction among different sex and gender role orientation. e. Discrepancies exist in GEA of university students from three different variables(sex, mother’s employment, and GRO). f. Significant canonical correlation exists in GEO and FOS. g. Romance satisfaction and GEO have the highest capacity of predicting fear of success. Advanced discussions and further suggestions are addressed based on the result of this study.

This study aimed on discussed the effect on the gender consciousness of aboriginal children gender growth group counseling. The study method was action research, the analysis were taken by group observation record, interview, worksheets in the activities, feedback sheets for each units and on the whole, and reflective notes. We found out problems and solutions from the process of the implement on group counseling, and the students’ feedback and the reflections were both generalized from it. This study took the eight-week action study of the sixth grade aboriginal students at Huanxi National Primary School in Miaoli County. The results of the study were: I. Most students tend to response to the social common expectation, and recognize the social gender ideal. II. Most student are affected by the environment and their model, and they accepted the work division of the gender characters. III. The students were influenced by their friends and interests, the gender recognition was not fixed. IV. Most students developed the critical consciousness, and they agree that the framework of gender needs to be broken through. V. The students’ gender consciousness was not completely inherited by the Atayal culture, the new balance of traditional and modern culture should be found out. VI. The difficulties in the process of the implement on gender growth group were improved. VII. The researcher’s reflection and professional development were promoted in the process of leading the gender growth group. According to the above results, the gender consciousness for aboriginal elementary students gender growth group counseling made the concrete suggestion and reference for school counselors , parents, and the same kind of groups.

Full textCognitive gender differences in mathematics, which were noted in past research have latterly been found to be declining. but are still observed at secondary school level in the field of spatial skills and geometry. However, due to divergent geometry curricula and the multidimensional nature of spatial skills, results from gender studies have led to broad conclusions being drawn from investigations which were affected by random elements. Research results have been influenced by imbalanced representation of the two gender groups in samples and also by differential gender exposure to previous mathematical experience. Both these limitations in research have produced outcomes reflecting negatively On females. Internationally divergent geometry curricula are a result of the traditional synthetic approach to the teaching of Euclidean geometry falling Into disfavour in western countries. Thus, Euclidean geometry has been largely overlooked in current educational research and the cognitive processes such as deductive reasoning, proof writing and hypothesis testing, have received scant attention within geometry teaching over the past decade. The standardized system in most South African secondary schools coupled with a uniform core curriculum for mathematics lends itself to an advantageous environment for empirical studies in mathematics performance. The present gender investigation involved almost an equal number of males and females from 5' selected secondary schools near Johannesburg in South Africa. Performance in Euclidean geometry was evaluated for possible gender differences by means of multiple choice and open ended questions. In keeping with most existing research, mean differences were compared. No statistically significant gender difference in mean performance on Euclidean geometry was found. Further analysis at item level was undertaken for the multiple choice component of the test instrument by means of the one dimensional three parameter logistic model in Item Response Theory, This model, is considered to be very sensitive in identifying differences at different ability levels -a shortcoming in existing research. Four out of a total of twenty Euclidean geometry items, were identified as producing differential gender performance. Similar gender tendencies were observed for all four items. The performance was in favour of most males for each of these items. Females of lower ability (as measured by the item) did not perform as well as males of similar ability level. In all four Cases females of higher ability surpassed males of a corresponding ability level. Perceptual difficulties in females were more pronounced than in males for some of the items.

Full textThis paper responds to the dearth of research into women's negative intra-gender relations and lack of understanding as to why and how these relations manifest. Through a qualitative study of women elite leaders' experiences in UK organizations, the research considers how gendered contexts, women doing gender well and differently simultaneously, intra-gender competition and female misogyny may explain negative intra-gender social relations between women. We consider micro-aggression research and women's abjection and offer a unique conceptualization of intra-gender micro-violence with themes of disassociating, suppression of opportunity and abject appearance. The themes illustrate how the masculine symbolic order shapes and constrains women elite leaders' social relations with other women. We conclude that raising consciousness to intra-gender micro-violence between women is important as a means of disruption; to facilitate women and men's acceptance of intra-gender differences between women; and to open up opportunities and possibilities for women in organizations.

This research tries to realize the behavior of MMORPG players’ gender switching by the means of qualitative and quantitative. Therefore, through Web-based Survey, the first part of this research is to know the relation between the act of switching and players’ demography variable, sex role, and the motive of switching. The second part is to employ in-depth interviews to understand how players portray the other sex and how they recognize the other sex, which could be related to the sex role stereotype. According to the result of quantitative report, there are eight hundred questionnaires available. Most MMORPG gender-switching players are male, mostly students aging from sixteen to thirty. Players, who are more experienced, whether male or female, are more likely to switch gender. Whether the appearance of the role in the game is good-looking is the biggest motivation of switching. Female players with more masculinity are apt to gender-switching because of social interaction, while male players with less masculinity are more liable to gender-switching. On the other hand, the result of qualitative report shows all nine interviewees, no matter male or female, have obvious stereotype about the other sex in description of the characters’ appearances, careers, and personalities. Even if these players have experienced gender switching, they still cannot change the traditional aspects of gender stereotype. For example, male players consider female roles to be slim, sexy, and fair, and female players think male roles fit attacking careers like warriors the best. However, compared to male players, female players allow the roles to have more flexibility. As a result, there is still a lot of space for both male and female players to improve in terms of gender equality.
