Abstract:
Nine newspapers covering U.S. Senate races in 2004 were mostly even- handed in the space and prominence given candidates. Reporter gender, newsroom diversity, and newspaper size were associated with partisan imbalance giving more favorable treatment to Democrats. The partisanship of a story's lead predicted the story's structural imbalance, regardless of the party the imbalance favored. However, story partisan and structural imbalances were negligibly related, suggesting that news processing conventions rather than journalistic partisanship produced the imbalance.

Abstract:
The paper is devoted to the gender politics of the auditing companies in Russia. The main hypothesis of the research suggests that, with the predominance of female labor, the gender structure of the governing bodies reveals the presence of a “glass ceiling” indicating the possibility of gender imbalance not in favor of women. At the same time, high rates of female presence in governing bodies reduce attention to gender imbalance. The research methodology provides for a sample survey and structural statistical analysis of the gender composition of auditors, assessment of the gender profile of the profession. The correlation and regression analysis of factors proves that the gender composition in the auditing environment is determined primarily by the influence of external factors. An assessment of salaries is carried out according to the positions in the regional context and then compared with its average value in the industry. The hypothesis of the existence of gender imbalance in Russian auditing is approved. The analysis of open sources showed the results that companies do not require modern methods and practices that serve to reduce gender imbalances. To solve the “glass ceiling” problem, it is necessary to expand the list of disclosed gender information in company reporting and initiate a broad scientific discussion.

Abstract:
This article investigates whether gender imbalance may be conducive to domestic terrorism in developing countries. A female-dominated society may not provide sufficient administration, law, or order to limit domestic terrorism, especially since societies in developing countries primarily turn to males for administration, policing, and paramilitary forces. Other economic considerations support female imbalance resulting in grievance-generated terrorism. Because male dominance may also be linked to terrorism, empirical tests are ultimately needed to support our prediction. Based on panel data for 128 developing countries for 1975 to 2011, we find that female gender imbalance results in more total and domestic terrorist attacks. This female gender imbalance does not affect transnational terrorism in developing countries or domestic and transnational terrorism in developed countries. Further tests show that gender imbalance affects terrorism only when bureaucratic institutions are weak. Many robustness tests support our results.

Abstract:
Gender imbalance in terms of enrolment performance and the number of professionals in physics has been an issue of concern for stakeholders in physics education. The purpose of this paper is to advance some sociological reasons why females are underrepresented in physics and what can be done to address this gender imbalance in physics; particularly in the classroom. In this paper it was argued that the gender imbalance in physics is not necessarily due to gender brain-difference model as believed by some researchers but rather it may be due to gender-role socialization through some conscious and unconscious socialization activities in the environment. Recommendations were made on how to bridge this gender imbalance in physics; one of such recommendations include that counselors should encourage female students’ to be actively involved in physics or its related activities instead of running away from the subject.

Abstract:
Despite New Zealand's real progress toward gender equality over the past century, women remain under-represented in the country's senior legal positions. Disparities between men and women are not unique to the legal profession. They are particularly problematic, however, given that the law aims to pursue justice, and equal opportunity should be its paramount concern. This article examines some of the obstacles and constraints women face in attaining leadership roles in the New Zealand legal profession. Preliminary solutions to remedy these obstacles and constraints are proposed, including a necessary recognition that many female professionals offer distinct experiences and have different needs to their male counterparts.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine gender as a key moderator in the relationship between effort-reward imbalance (ERI) and burnout among employees in Caribbean workplaces. Design/methodology/approach Based on a survey sample of 323 employees in a small developing country in the Caribbean, this study tested the hypothesis that the stressor–strain relationship (captured by ERI and burnout) is stronger for women than for men. Findings The results revealed that the effect of high effort-low rewards (i.e. ERI) on burnout among females was significantly larger than its effect on burnout for males. In contrast, high effort-high rewards were significantly associated with higher burnout levels for males. Research limitations/implications The study used a cross-sectional approach using self-report measures of burnout, effort and rewards. Practical implications Management in organisations should ensure that male and female employees’ efforts and contributions at work are appropriately and fairly rewarded as a means of reducing negative effects of ERIs. Originality/value The study examined how gender moderated the adverse effects of a popular work-stress model on employee health in a developing country context.

Abstract:
The COVID-19 health crisis brought with it an increase in the workload on family members due to the restriction of services and the suspension of formal and informal care networks. Numerous studies have analyzed how home confinement have affected different gender gaps, including the gender gap related to chores within the home. This research aims to contribute to the existing literature from the perspective of gender geography by introducing the variable municipality size in the analyses. Our research in the case of Spain shows the COVID-19 health crisis to have had a significant impact on gender gaps, albeit to varying degrees. Women, especially those living in small municipalities, experienced a widening of the gap related to care and domestic workload during confinement. The study of the distribution of the more burdensome chores between genders shows an even more imbalanced scenario to the detriment of women. However, following the end of confinement, the situation improved. Although the imbalance against women remains, the gap with respect to the pre-pandemic situation has been reduced.

Abstract:
The study assessed the imbalances in teaching profession in both public and private Nursery and Primary Schools, Public Secondary schools in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State to determine the percentage/ ratio of imbalance and its relationship to learning outcome in mathematics at the primary school level. The study employed the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of all the seventy public and private Nursery and Primary Schools and thirty two public Secondary Schools with six hundred and sixty teachers in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The data generated were analysed using the chi-square statistics. The findings from the study revealed that there was significant gender imbalance in teaching profession in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The worst hit is the public nursery and primary school with an imbalance percentage of 78.87% and 21.13% in favour of female teachers while the private schools have a percentage imbalance of 76.02% and 23.98% in favour of female teachers. The female pupils’ performance in mathematics was better than that of the male pupils. The study revealed that at the secondary school the imbalance was significant at the junior secondary school level and milled at the senior secondary. The study recommended the immediate reversal of the trend of imbalance by employing more male teachers into the public and private nursery and primary schools. This will improve the academic achievement of male pupils in mathematics, hence achieving the best practice in Nigeria education.

Abstract:
Abstract Several recent investigations indicate the existence of gender-related systematic trends in the peer review of proposals for observations on astronomical facilities. This includes the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) where there is evidence of a gender imbalance in the rank of proposals with male principal investigators (PIs) favored over female PIs. Since semester 2017A (17A), the NRAO has taken the following steps: (1) inform science review panels (SRPs) and the telescope time allocation committee (TAC) about the gender imbalance; and (2) increase the female representation on SRPs and the TAC to reflect the community demographics. Here we analyze SRP normalized rank-ordered scores, or linear ranks, by PI gender for NRAO observing proposals from semesters 12A–21A. We use bootstrap resampling to generate modeled distributions and the Anderson–Darling (AD) test to evaluate the probability that the linear rank distributions for male and female PIs are drawn from the same parent sample. We find that between semesters 12A–17A that male PIs are favored over female PIs (AD p-value 0.0084), whereas between semesters 17B–21A female PIs are favored over male PIs, but at a lower significance (AD p-value 0.11). Therefore the gender imbalance is currently being ameliorated, but this imbalance may have been reversed. Regardless, we plan to adopt a dual-anonymous approach to proposal review to reduce the possibility of bias to occur.
