Abstract:
African ancestral values and demographic presence are crucial to the making of the Brazilian nation. Yet the tendency is to deny their identity in favor of a unitary concept of nationality and cultural homogeneity under the aegis of patriarchy and Western values. In the globalized world, feminists and formerly colonized peoples have defined identity as a political right; this is the source of the theory of multiculturalism. The critique of Western universalism and patriarchy leads us to question the terms in which this theory has been articulated and points to the need to interrogate whiteness. This critique, developed in the practice and thought of feminist and anti-racist social movements, including Afro-Brazilian movements in the period 1930-1968, contributes in largely unrecognized ways to the construction of post-modern thought. The concept of gender implies moving the focus of attention from women to the relations between men and women. A similar shift can be made in the study of race relations and of feminist thought. Thus, it is suggested that the traditional focus on “Blacks” or on “the Black problem” in Brazil is insufficient. In order to deal effectively with the issue of race, one must interrogate the silent, invisible and unarticulated hegemony of white identity as ethnicity. In this process, reason is found to critically analyze feminist thought from the perspective of non-Western cultures. The line of scientific research and thought initiated and inspired by Cheikh Anta Diop and the analysis of the social and linguistic structures of the Yoruba, an African people who contributed greatly to the formation of Brazilian culture, reveal common grounds and areas of coherence between feminist theory and Afrocentric or perspectivist anti-racist thought. The text explores the legacy and current presence of racism in Brazil in their relation to patriarchy. The Sorcery of Color is proposed as a metaphor for the Brazilian standard of race relations, which transforms a perverse system of racial domination into a pretense of anti-racist ideals and creates the category of Virtual Whiteness as its fulcrum of identity. These factors are traced in the literature of psychology and new tendencies like ethnopsychiatry and the study of whiteness are identified. Also, the emergence of new theoretical and therapeutic approaches in the clinical practice and theoretical production of a new generation of Brazilian African descendant psychologists is observed and characterized as the Afro-Brazilian Listeners Based on documentary research, Black movements in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (1914-1960) are examined in a critical analysis that emphasizes the aspects of identity and education. Frequently, distortion and omission of data occur in studies of these movements, which present a continuum and coherence in thought and practice over the twentieth century, and also contribute to the construction of post-modern thought. In education, the conclusion is that attending to the widely demonstrated need to overcome racial discrimination will depend on a new approach to gender and to African identity.

Abstract:
The current study looks at the construction of professional identity and its relations with gender, by analyzing the discursive practices of a unique set of contrasting groups, i.e. three parallel institutions created to address violence against women in Brazil: An all female police station and two crisis intervention centers – one run by feminists professionals and the other run by lay women from a working class community. In particular, the study investigates how the professionals in each setting respond to self and other assessments made by the female victims of violence.

Abstract:
This essay examines the romantic comedies S.O.S. mulheres ao mar (2014) and Meu passado me condena (2013), which repeat several tropes of the chanchada—a film comedy genre with its beginnings in early twentieth-century Brazil. Both offer a negotiation of changing class status in Brazil during a period of increasing international attention and economic growth (2002 to 2014). Although these films promote new notions of Brazilian cultural identity, they also sustain established hierarchies (of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality) in favor of promoting neoliberal values and ways of being. In particular they promote consumerism, self-improvement, and the cultivation of personal happiness. Unlike Brazilian popular comedy of the mid-twentieth century, these films do not offer self-deprecating critiques of modernity or the failings of capitalism. Rather, S.O.S. mulheres ao mar and Meu passado me condena celebrate and promote the idea of a new emergent Brazil, making gender and sexuality frameworks for thinking about contemporary Brazilian cultural identity.

Abstract:
AbstractThe recognition of individual identity as multilayered and circumstance based leads to a shift from a theory of general rights to a theory of specific rights connected to structural social change. General rights, such as the right to health and the right to work, must be interpreted according to the circumstance of differently situated women, so that rights are specific enough to ensure that they are actually enforced for different groups, including groups that, due to discrimination, are made invisible to the law. In this sense, the different circumstances that help develop the identity of women, Black women or poor Black women in Brazil will be studied to give specific content to general rights recognised by Brazilian law and by International human rights law.

Abstract:
Abstract The present research aimed to identify and discuss the social representations of trans women related to gender identity and transphobia in Brazil and Colombia. In this study participated 43 Trans women, 22 from Brazil, aged between 18 and 55 years (M=29.09, SD=8.53) and 21 from Colombia, aged between 21 and 41 years (M=28.19, SD=7.63). This study adopted a qualitative approach in which semi-structured interviews were used. The data were analyzed by the Iramuteq software, which identified the social representations in classes. The results showed what the participants understood about transphobia and how they regarded their experiences with this gender identity. The participants presented negative social representations, aiming at their personal experiences related to their social context. Themes related to violence, discrimination, prejudice, denial of rights and family support emerged from both the Brazilian and Colombian sample. Implications for Tran´s quality of life are discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a study regarding the homosexual movement in Brazil and issues relating to the "paradigm of the closet", which became central at various times and to various groups related to the identity constructions of the movement. Based on theoretical and methodological perspectives of Cultural Studies, the genealogical analysis and queer studies, we sought to revisit the historical process of formation and political organization of the movement from the 1960s, with the emergence of social networks, to the Sexual Diversity Parade in contemporary times, in order to understand the sociocultural, political and ideological movement that coalesced in the discourses and practices around the calls for homosexuals to "come out of the closet”, publicly assuming a "gay identity". Such influences constitute themselves as political mechanisms for both the social recognition of homosexuality and for the introduction of a "libertarian logic" in the field of subjectivity. The analysis of these strategies has shown that the process of enunciation of homosexuality produces visibility and recognition, creating democratizing consensus, as well as legal and socio-political advancement. The claim of recognition, however, that relies on a clearly formulated identity, can interfere with desexualized conduct and of affective experiences between persons of the same sex, becoming mechanisms of regulation and introducing within the movement itself essential dialogue and practices and identity frameworks.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to uncover how travestis are being represented in one of Brazil’s biggest online journals; Jornal O Globo. O Globo’s words reach millions everyday and are therefore a major discursive stakeholder. I have used Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) and Queer theory to expose the main existing discourses in Jornal O Globo that relates to travestis. The study revealed how O Globo uses an active/passive discourse that limits the performativity of travestis; one expression of this discourse was the modification of the Portuguese language according to other rules than those of grammar. The performativity of travestis that linguisticly requests the usage of female pronouns was to a greater extent respected by journalists when the travesti acted passive/feminine as in becoming victim of unprovoked violence, told a story of financial or artisitic success, or if LGBT activists participated in the news coverage. In summary the active/passive discourse epitomizes a conventional Brazilian gender binarism that consists of two genders that is man and non-man. From a queer theoretical perspective I argue that O Globo’s representations of travestis continuously hinder the performativity of these individuals through their linguistic and discursive practice, which contributes to societal ostracism toward travestis.

Abstract:
This Masters dissertation addresses the agenda, plans, programs and public policies meant to bridge the gap related to the LGBT population (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite and transgender) through education within the Federal Government. The research has the objective of contributing to the knowledge of how the issue of sexuality has been dealt with, more specifically the LGBT theme, on the agenda of education, as well as the demands highlighted and educational policies developed to respond to them. Among the plans and programs looked into, are: the Programas Nacionais de Direitos Humanos [Brazilian Human Rights Programs], the Parâmetros Curriculares Nacionais [Brazilian Curriculum Parameters] and, lastly, the Programa Brasil Sem Homofobia [Program Brazil without Homophobia]. The main focus of this research is on Brasil Sem Homofobia: Programa de Combate à Violência e Promoção da Cidadania GLBT [Brazil without Homophobia: Program to Fight Violence and Foster LGBT Citizen Rights]. This program was chosen as it is an important landmark to the recognition of LGBT people as subject of rights, as well as it has introduced sexual diversity and gender identity policies in education. The analytical and theoretical reference of this research is based especially on the repertoire of educational policies, based on Stephen Ball, and on social justice, from contributions by Nancy Fraser. The methodological procedures used were document analysis of the plans and programs mentioned above and semi-structured interviews with people connected to the LGBT Movement and Government officials and technicians who directly participated in the process of creating and/or implementing Brazil without Homophobia. This paper analyzes BSH [Brazil without Homophobia] and sexual diversity and gender identity educational policies implemented in the 2005-2010 period, after the launch of the Plano Nacional de Promoção da Cidadania e Direitos Humanos de LGBT [Brazilian Plan to Foster LGBT Citizen and Human Rights], which has become the new guidance for policies to be implemented by the Ministries and Offices of the Federal Government. Thus, one can see LGBT go from controversial topic to subject of rights in public policies of human rights and education, as well as physical violence as justification has given space to overcoming inequalities.

Inscribed into the arena of knowledge on gender identities, this work is about transsexuality, a subject on which rests many controversies, starting with the use of the terms transsexualism and transsexuality. They are not only different words, but mean different viewpoints and can demarcate opposing perspectives of fields of knowledge regarding transsexual condition, one that defends the diversity of gender identities and one that conceives it as pathology. This research aims to situate the debate about depathologization of transsexuality in Brazil analyzing its discursive fields. On one hand, I try to identify who are the actors involved in the campaign and investigate how they are producing the debate, showing what kinds of mobilizations have been made and what are their main demands. On the other hand, I seek to identify and analyze the knowledge underlying the depathologization speeches and other discourses which are opposed to this perspective. I present and analyze the proposals of the campaign concerning the continuity of health/medical care as well as the maintenance of the rights of transsexuals in a possible depathologization of transsexuality.

Abstract:
The investigation inquires into the material and social building of the space in the neighbourhood Vila de Santa Luzia, a lacking community of Recife, through participative processes which include a gender perspective. A collective building of public space that integers the concepts of appropriation and identification of the space on behalf of their inhabitants. The production of this urban space, Vila de Santa Luzia, was and still is a complex scheme with multiple dimensions which is continuously changing. Nevertheless, its core is unalterable: the struggle for recognition and consciousness of human dignity. In conclusion, the participation of its inhabitants originates from the tireless dispute for human rights. Moreover, citizenship participation in the transformation of space is assembled with the social categories of gender, class, age and ethnic group. In Santa Luzia’s context, women have a main role in the transformation of their territory and the processes that it generates. For this reason, the analysis incorporates, as a transversal axis, the gender approach and is based on the Equality and Equity Principles from the Human Rights and the Declaration for the Women’s Rights to the City. During the development of the thesis, I analyse the unequal relationships between men and women which are used as a basis to go in depth into women’s participation in social and urban public politics. In first place, the investigation studies the interaction between social movements and public politics, and the coverage of the citizenship basic needs and interests. In second place, it tries to comprehend whether the feelings of belonging and identification with the neighbourhood allow to develop a collective consciousness to participate in its social building. In third place, it analyses who are the social actors that promote and encourage the processes of citizenship participation. In fourth place, it explains the social impact that the citizenship participation processes have in the urban transformation of the neighbourhood. A qualitative methodology has been applied in the study, which included a three months field work in the community of Vila de Santa Luzia. The results of the analysis reflect that the social actors’ participation in the Vila de Santa Luzia is subjected to three main axis: political practice, violence and the feeling of belonging to the place. In consequence, the interactions between social movements and public politics, the feeling of belonging to the territory and the determining factors when participating, have a direct impact on the territory. This impact is addresses in two ways: on one hand, the socio-spatial fragmentation that already existed in Vila de Santa Luzia is increased, both in the social and political environments. On the other hand, the building of a collective identity is strengthened. As I emphasize in the development of the investigation, people participation in the social transformation of the community in the different social scales (their home, environment, neighbourhood and city) is the proof that it is possible a change in the exercise of power for the democratic management of the city. It has to be underlined, that it is needed that citizenship participation breaks the different obstacle that it faces and places the efforts in the real construction of the Right to the City and social justice. Besides, it is also essential that politicians identify themselves with the population, territory and socio-spatial practises, and political practice, for the democratic management of cities.

No âmbito do Poder Executivo ocorr... (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo)
Abstract: From the imposition of a compulsory heterosexual heteronormative discursive order, which places those who do not classify themselves in bipolarity (male/female) on the fringes of society, the gender approach deservesattention. Transsexuality can be characterizedby the condition of the individual who does not psychically and socially identify with the sex assigned to him on the birth certificate. This condition causes the individual excessive discomfort and a sense of social inadequacy, not belonging to the context in which is inserted. In this sense the present work analyzes from the theoretical reference of Alexy through a dogmatic in three different levels (analytical, empirical and normative), the difficulties faced by the transsexual people due to the legal and state omissions, considering that despite the guarantee of fundamental rights in the Federal Constitution, especially human dignity, this has not been effective in safe guarding the rights of transgender individuals. In this sense, in the sphere of the Legislative Power there were numerous bills to try to regulate gender identity, however, none were approved, thus maintaining the absence of a gender identity law in the Brazilian legal system, which ends up further contributing to the marginalization of the transgender person, as it keeps them invisible to the institutions of law in their country. Within the scope of the Government, the institute of the social name was created, which recognizes gender identity, but ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

The present study encompasses the period between the years of 1979-1981. During this time in Brazil, it was possible to verify the reflex of the Sexual Revolution, a movement that generated profound transformations in the sexuality and in the relationships between genders, modifying the concepts of “men and women”. Thus, the Brazilian issue of Playboy Magazine produced in its pages discourses that generated representations of the masculine practice, which reverberated directly in the mechanism of sexuality. Playboy Magazine established a norm, a guideline and a single truthful discourse about a particular ideal model of masculinity. This dissertation aims at contributing to the writing of a narrative of what it is to be a man, as a social construction by its social environment and subject of a constructed, modelled sexuality.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this research is to discuss about violence against transvestites, transsexual women and transsexual men in contemporary Brazil. Its approach is based on the reports of Human Rights violations in this population, carried out through the Human Rights Hotline Service (Dial 100) of the Secretariat of Human Rights of the Presidency of the Republic. The following categories of violation have been identified: verbal aggressiveness, death threat/attempt, threats (except death), murder, discrimination, neglect, financial loss, physical violence and sexual violence. The frequency of violations by federation units, by category of violations and by categories of suspects, was quantitatively determined by relating them to each other. Most of the violations are perpetrated by men, except in cases of negligence, where the main violators are public institutions. Situations of violation concerning the contexts in the family, work, consumption, sexual exploitation and use of public services, especially in the areas of education, health, social assistance and security, were also described in a qualitative approach. Moreover, we aimed at the comprehension of the impacts of violence on the subjectivities of victims making use of the social humiliation concept. In the light of the outcomes of this research and other works held in various parts of the world, the conclusion is that transphobia is a cross-cultural phenomenon which is based on five axes linked to interdiction and reification: corporeal life interdiction, social life interdiction, political life interdiction, reification for sexual use and reification for derision

Abstract:
This chapter presents a discussion of schooling of transsexual persons in Brazil. Considering the high levels of violence affecting LGBT populations in Brazil, federal and state governments, along with LGBT social movements, have conducted conferences to develop policy guidelines for serving LGBT populations, emphasizing education for diversity. From these guidelines, strategies for promoting the schooling of trans persons were adopted in some of the Brazilian states, and the adoption of regulations regarding the use of chosen names in schools is discussed in detail. Policy strategies toward the inclusion of trans persons in Brazilian schools are analyzed, with emphasis on the potential challenges faced by society when opening the school doors to difference.

Abstract:
In her Gaijin (1980), Tizuka Yamasaki (b. 1949) narrates a story of a young woman who marries her older brother’s best friend for the sake of their immigration to Brazil in 1908, and eventually becomes an independent working single mother in the city. Even though the story is loosely based on her maternal grandmother’s life, Yamasaki uses the movie to express her own identity as an educated Brazilian woman, who was involved in women’s movement during Brazil’s military regime. The movie received international acclaim but has not been widely appreciated among the Japanese in Brazil, mainly because it challenges the essentialization of Japanese Brazilian identity, which obscures gender and class. Inspired by Gaijin, which gives a voice to the historical “voiceless,” this book employs life history/story as its main methodology, in combination with substantial archival research. Each informant narrates his/her story and reveals his/her complex identity in relation to the Japanese-born but US-based author, based on their “shared” Japanese ancestry.

Abstract:
Within a year and half after the global recession began in September 2008, one quarter of Brazilian residents in Japan had returned to Brazil, which critically damaged the once thriving ethic Brazilian businesses in Japan’s Brazil Towns. Brazilian dekassegui workers largely married among themselves, and gender subordination often came to be reproduced and even strengthened in the Brazilian diaspora. Over the years, due to Japan’s prolonged recession, the Brazilian population in Japan came to be dispersed. Japanese Brazilians remaining in Japan became increasingly nationalistic as Brazilians, imagining their homeland for its bright future, with the World Cup (2014) and Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (2016). While being positioned collectively as Brazilians, Japanese Brazilians have not come to form a homogenized Brazilian identity in Japan and continued to position themselves individually over “the face” and the definition of Nikkeiness.

Abstract:
Pre-war child immigrants who arrived in Brazil in the 1920s and 1930s grew up as Japanese in the Brazilian countryside, where the Japanese formed various ethnic associations and built Japanese language schools. Counted on for agricultural labor and as caretakers of their younger siblings, prewar child immigrants had little or no Brazilian formal education, but many learned the Japanese language in accordance with their parents’ plan of going home after making a sizable fortune. Young daughters’ sexual honor was defined in relation to family honor, and gender subordination was strengthened for ethnic endogamy. By 1970, prewar child immigrants with fluency in Japanese had come to occupy the important positions in their Japanese Brazilian community in the city and by identifying themselves as quasi-Niseis, they eventually redefined themselves as more Japanese than the Issei and even than the Japanese in Japan.

Abstract:
Chapter 1 examines the workings of racial ideologies through constructions of mixed-raceness and blackness in the United States and Brazil from the development of slavery to the 1990s. Through consideration of legal structures, censuses, scientific and academic writing, and cultural productions, the chapter provides the historical context in which the U.S. mulatta and Brazilian mulata figures emerged and the intertwinement of race, gender, sexuality, and national identity. It provides a genealogy of the relationships of representation, racial categorization, and racial ideology. The chapter sets up a framework for how dominant popular media draws on legacies of slavery and colonialism to produce narratives of racial progress, racial democracy, and multiculturalism while upholding white supremacy.

Abstract:
In Brazil, each region has its own cultural identity regarding accent, gastronomy, customs, all of which may reflect in its literature. Specially, we believe that country's background and contextual features are directly related to what people read. Hence, we perform a cross-state comparison analysis based on Brazilian reading preferences through a multipartite network model. Also, we explore the effects of socioeconomic and demographic factors on favorite books and writing genres. Such cross-state analyses highlight how the country is culturally rich, where each region has its own distinctive culture. Our findings offer great opportunities for the Brazilian book industry by enhancing current knowledge on social indicators related to reading preferences.

Abstract:
Background: In Brazil, 55.000 dementia’s new cases are registered per year, the illness is distinguished by cognition decline. However, this disease’s prevalence is scarce. Objectives: Identify the epidemiologic profile of patients with dementia per region in Brazil during the years 2010 to 2020. Methods: In this ecologic descriptive study, secondary data was obtained in the DATASUS platform. The data gathered referred to hospitalizations by dementia per region of Brazil during 2010 to 2020. Furthermore, we collected data on sex, age, and ethnicity. Statistical analysis was conducted using measures of central tendency and dispersion. Results: The greatest frequency of hospitalizations occurred in 2010 (Mean= 729,8; SD= 662,4;95% CI= 149,1-1310,4), and the lowest in 2020 (Mean= 449,4; SD= 471,7;95% CI= 35,9-862,9). Southeast had the major frequency (Mean= 1.649; SD= 160,2;95% CI= 1.554-1.744) and the least frequent was the North. The female gender prevailed only in 2016 and 2019 (Mean= 297,6; SD= 345,1;95% CI= -4,9 - 600,1). Furthermore, in 2010, patients amid the age of 20- 59 years old established the highest fraction of hospitalizations (Mean= 410; SD= 300,5;95% CI= 146,5-673,4). However, during 2011 and 2020, individuals ≥60 years old predominated. The white patient’s number was larger (Mean= 621; SD= 65,1;95% CI= 582-659). Conclusion: The most prevalent epidemiologic profile was white males older than 60 years old residents of the Southeast which is consonant with the comprehended epidemiology.

Objective: To identify the prevalence of the founding variant c.1010G>A (R337H) in the TP53 gene in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, carried out using data from the Goiania PopulationBased Cancer Registry, in partnership with the team from the Molecular and Cytogenetic Genetics Laboratory of the Federal University of Goias and Clinical Research Unit/HC. Peripheral venous blood collections, DNA extraction, and Sanger genetic sequencing were carried out in 27 samples from unselected patients diagnosed with DCIS in the period between 1994 and 2010, who agreed to participate in the research by signing the free and informed consent form. This work was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of Hospital das Clínicas/UFG, as a proposing institution, and Research Ethics Committee of the Co-participant Institution Hospital Araújo Jorge/Association for Combating Cancer in Goiás (ACCG) in attention to the resolution CNS: 466/2012 and its complementaries (1,940,921). Results: In our study, conducted in midwestern Brazil with a population of women with DCIS not selected for family history and involving 27 samples, 2 cases (7.4%) of the pathogenic TP53 R337H mutation were found. Conclusions: The present study showed that the prevalence of the founding variant c.1010G>A (R337H) in the TP53 gene in patients with DCIS proved to be considerably high, comparing the same rate found in other Brazilian studies for invasive breast carcinoma. This study warrants that there is a need for further studies testing not only the TP53 gene, but also other genes related to hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome in DCIS. Although DCIS is a non-obligate precursor to invasive carcinoma, we highlighted the facts that strengthen the reflection on better genetic research in women with DCIS.

Abstract:
Consuming music through streams has made huge volumes of data available. We collect a part of such data and perform cross-era comparative analyses between physical and digital media for successful artists within the music market in Brazil. Given an artist’s career, we focus on hot streak periods defined as high-impact bursts occurring in sequence. Specifically, we construct artists’ success time series to detect and characterize hot streak periods for both physical and digital eras. Then, we assess their features, analyze them in the genre scale, and perform a cluster analysis to identify groups of artists with distinct success levels. For both physical and digital eras, we find the same clusters: Spike Hit Artists, Big Hit Artists, and Top Hit Artists. Our insights shed light on significant changes in the dynamics of the music industry over the years, by identifying the core of each era.

Abstract:
Background: Every year, around 14 million women and girls aged 15 to 19 (both married and unmarried) give birth. This age group might lead to negative outcomes of pregnancy and childbirth. This scoping review aimed to identify the outcomes of adolescent pregnancy and its contributing factors. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selection; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The research question was identified using population, exposure, and outcome(s) (PEOS) framework. The search included Wiley Online Library, EBSCO, ProQuest, and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 307 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, seven articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Six articles from developing countries (Brazil, Mexico, Zambia, Malawi, and Romania) and one report from developed countries (Australia) met the inclusion criteria with qualitative, quantitative (cross-sectional), and descriptive studies. The existing studies stated that adolescent pregnancy had adverse effects on both mother and babies’ health and well-being. Young maternal age is associated with low parity, lack of prenatal care, premature, and low birth weight. Factors contributed to the increased adolescent pregnancy rate were early sexual initiation, low use of contraception, low educational level, low socioeconomic status, inadequate knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, and gender disparity. Conclusion: Young maternal age contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes of both mothers and babies. Early sexual health education and health promotion on teenage girls may reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy rates. Abstract:
Context: Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD) is a rare X-linked recessive hypomyelinating leukodystrophy caused by mutations in the proteolipid protein 1 (PLP1) gene, associated with myelin sheath development and stability. The result is a broad spectrum of clinical phenotypes. Diagnosis is confirmed by genetic testing. Clinical features include hypotonia followed by progressive spasticity, nystagmus, ataxia and cognitive impairment. Males are more affected. Females are asymptomatic or present milder symptoms. Most cases arise from duplications, point and null mutations. Null mutations are associated with milder phenotypes. Brain Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) may reveal hypomyelination. There is no disease modifying treatment for PMD. We aim to present the case of a woman with a novel variant of the PLP1 gene. Case report: A 38-year-old female presented with 23 years of progression of upper limb tremor, speech impairment, lower limb rigidity and urinary incontinence. She reported abnormal development of reading and writing skills. She had a brother with cognitive impairment, delayed motor development, gait disorder and generalized tonic-clonic seizures; and a sister with upper limb tremor, dysarthria and behavioral disorder. Hypomyelination was detected on brain MRI. Complete exome sequencing detected a novel likely pathogenic variant of PLP1 gene: ChrX(GRCh37):NC_000023.10:g.103041651del:NM _000533.3:c449del, p.Asp150AlafsTer10, heterozygous. Conclusions: The patient’s case resembles a milder form of PMD. This is supported by literature linking deletions and female sex to milder phenotypes. In 20 to 40% of cases with suggestive clinical findings, no PLP1 mutation is found. New studies are needed to identify other variants associated with PMD.

The theme aboutreader formation in Brazil is recurrent in different debates throughout history, considering its importance for the construction of a literate society. This study aimed to draw the reader's profileaged 6 to 10 yearsof the literary text, making an interface with the influence of the Digital Age in the choice of textual genres (fairy tales, legends, fables, among others) and in the formats of reading adhered to by students. Therefore, we aimed to identify the different styles of reading, as well as the ideological aspects inherent to this phenomenon, based on the frequency and formats of reading, namely: on screen and on paper. As a methodology, we carried out a bibliographic survey and applied exploratory research to private school teachers, in a city in the interior of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The survey data point to the great challenge of waking up children's appetite for the universe of reading in the Digital Age. Of the interviewed teachers, most defend the importance of literary reading, however most prefer videos and movies to reading.According to the teachers' testimony, children who like to read develop more creativity and criticality. The research revealed that the option for the act ofreading in detriment to other possibilities of access to culture receives a lot of influence from the encouragement of the school and the family. The sampling highlighted the importance of the literary ambience. We hope that the studywill contribute to the thought of new strategies to encourage reading, by portraying the students' inclination towards audiovisual language

Abstract:
Romania is going through a period of economic transition, subject to the pressures of globalization that affect the evolution of the family, at the micro social level, structurally, from the behaviour and relational point of view. The continuous process of changes in the labour market, the inefficiency of the association between vocational training and job satisfaction, the financial difficulties felt by most families but also the challenge of modernity have emphasized the phenomenon of migration in the last decade. The departure of parents who have to work abroad has become a worrying phenomenon with a higher incidence in the eastern half of the country. It has got complex effects on the evolution of the family, especially on the children left at home with one of their parents or their tutors. Nowadays, the studies show more and more situations of neglect in which children become victims and suffer emotionally and physically. They also suffer various abuses, they are exploited through work or sex. In schools, there is a new profile of special educational requirements (not deficiencies), the profile of children left at home without parental support. It is worrying the migration phenomenon seen as a value model by the young generation and its negative effects at school level: decrease of motivation for learning or school abandonment. The present study discusses a review of the current scientific literature objectively, which examines the impact of breaking attachment relationships between children and parents on socio-emotional development and school outcomes. The Romanian society knows an important socio-economic phenomenon, which has grown since 1990: migration. In 2017, a study carried out at the request of the Romanian Government recorded more than 85,000 children left home alone with one of the parents or without parental supervision. We aim to analyse what effects at school and socio-emotional level have the loss of attachment ties having as moderators the gender of the migrant parent, the duration of the separation, the age at which the separation occurs. When these relationships are interrupted, the child’s emotional development is affected, his emotional balance having repercussions in his social life. The purpose of this study is to identify, monitor the dimensions of the phenomenon in intensely affected areas (Braila and Galati counties), the psycho-pedagogical aspects of children with migrant parents exposed to situations of vulnerability, marginalization and to propose a program of educational strategies in order to optimize school motivation. The main objective of the research is to identify, evaluate and involve them into adaptive actions that have as their objective the rebalancing of the socio-affective relations

Carneiro, Gabriela Coutinho Amorim, Deborah Calado Coelho, and Suzana Bastos Batista. "Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in the treatment of primary dystonia of the pediatric population: a review." In XIII Congresso Paulista de Neurologia. Zeppelini Editorial e Comunicação, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5327/1516-3180.596.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical technique widely used for the treatment of several pathologies, such as Parkinson’s Disease and dystonias. Dystonias, primary or secondary, have several determining factors, among which we can mention genetic mutations, that, generally, do not respond satisfactorily to drug treatments. The difficult control of dystonias makes its management complex, since they are progressive, and, as a consequence, surgical options are often necessary. Objectives: To identify the impact of the use of DBS on the prognosis of children with primary dystonia. Methods: The present work consists of an integrative literature review, in which a careful search was carried out from databases available on the internet, such as Google Scholar, MedScape, Scielo and PubMed, using the following keywords combined in pairs: deep brain stimulation, pediatrics and primary dystonia. The research was carried out in English and Portuguese and, at the end, 10 articles published between the years 2017 and 2021 were selected. Results: Through analysis, it was observed that DBS proved to be an excellent therapy, with good results, especially for patients with primary dystonia, who were more susceptible to showing improvements in motor symptoms. Of these patients, those who have a mutation in the DYT1 gene seemed to respond better when it comes to disabling symptoms, as well as those who have known genetic etiologies. Conclusions: Although there is a limited number of studies related to the pediatric population, the use of DBS for dystonias, especially primary ones, seems to be an excellent therapeutic option for patients refractory to drug therapy. In any case, studies aimed at this group are still necessary in order to enrich and support the current evidence.

Viollaz, Mariana, Mauricio Salazar-Saenz, Luca Flabbi, Monserrat Bustelo, and Mariano Bosch. The COVID-19 Pandemic in Latin American and Caribbean countries: The Labor Supply Impact by Gender. Inter-American Development Bank, October 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0004490.

Abstract:
We study the labor supply impact of the COVID-19 pandemic by gender in four Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries: Brazil, Chile, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. To identify the impact, we compare labor market stocks and labor market flows over four quarters for a set of balanced panel samples of comparable workers before and after the pandemic. We find that the pandemic has negatively affected the labor market status of both men and women, but that the effect is significantly stronger for women, magnifying the already large gender gaps that characterize LAC countries. The main channel through which this stronger impact is taking place is the increase in child care work affecting women with school-age children.

Hulata, Gideon, Thomas D. Kocher, Micha Ron, and Eyal Seroussi. Molecular Mechanisms of Sex Determination in Cultured Tilapias. United States Department of Agriculture, October 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2010.7697106.bard.

Abstract:
Tilapias are among the most important aquaculture commodities worldwide. Commercial production of tilapia is based on monosex culture of males. Current methods for producing all-male fingerlings, including hormone treatments and genetic manipulations, are not entirely reliable, in part because of the genetic complexity of sex determination and sexual differentiation in tilapias. The goals of this project are to map QTL and identify genes regulating sex determination in commonly cultured tilapia species, in order to provide a rational basis for designing reliable genetic approaches for producing all-male fingerlings. The original objectives for this research were: 1) to identify the gene underlying the QTL on LG1 through positional cloning and gene expression analysis; 2) to fine map the QTL on LG 3 and 23; and 3) to characterize the patterns of dominance and epistasis among QTL alleles influencing sex determination. The brain aromatase gene Cyp19b, a possible candidate for the genetic or environmental SD, was mapped to LG7 using our F2 mapping population. This region has not been identified before as affecting SD in tilapias. The QTL affecting SD on LG 1 and 23 have been fine-mapped down to 1 and 4 cM, respectively, but the key regulators for SD have not been found yet. Nevertheless, a very strong association with gender was found on LG23 for marker UNH898. Allele 276 was found almost exclusively in males, and we hypothesized that this allele is a male-associated allele (MAA). Mating of males homozygous for MAA with normal females is underway for production of all-male populations. The first progeny reaching size allowing accurate sexing had 43 males and no females. During the course of the project it became apparent that in order to achieve those objectives there is a need to develop genomic infrastructures that were lacking. Efforts have been devoted to the development of genomic resources: a database consisting of nearly 117k ESTs representing 16 tissues from tilapia were obtained; a web tool based on the RepeatMasker software was designed to assist tilapia genomics; collaboration has been established with a sequencing company to sequence the tilapia genome; steps have been taken toward constructing a microarray to enable comparative analysis of the entire transcriptome that is required in order to detect genes that are differentially expressed between genders in early developmental stages. Genomic resources developed will be invaluable for studies of cichlid physiology, evolution and development, and will hopefully lead to identification of the key regulators of SD. Thus, they will have both scientific and agricultural implications in the coming years.

Funkenstein, Bruria, and Cunming Duan. GH-IGF Axis in Sparus aurata: Possible Applications to Genetic Selection. United States Department of Agriculture, November 2000. http://dx.doi.org/10.32747/2000.7580665.bard.

Abstract:
Many factors affect growth rate in fish: environmental, nutritional, genetics and endogenous (physiological) factors. Endogenous control of growth is very complex and many hormone systems are involved. Nevertheless, it is well accepted that growth hormone (GH) plays a major role in stimulating somatic growth. Although it is now clear that most, if not all, components of the GH-IGF axis exist in fish, we are still far from understanding how fish grow. In our project we used as the experimental system a marine fish, the gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata), which inhabits lagoons along the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts of Europe, and represents one of the most important fish species used in the mariculture industry in the Mediterranean region, including Israel. Production of Sparus is rapidly growing, however, in order for this production to stay competitive, the farming of this fish species has to intensify and become more efficient. One drawback, still, in Sparus extensive culture is that it grows relatively slow. In addition, it is now clear that growth and reproduction are physiological interrelated processes that affect each other. In particular sexual maturation (puberty) is known to be closely related to growth rate in fish as it is in mammals, indicating interactions between the somatotropic and gonadotropic axes. The goal of our project was to try to identify the rate-limiting components(s) in Sparus aurata GH-IGF system which might explain its slow growth by studying the ontogeny of growth-related genes: GH, GH receptor, IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF receptor, IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) and Pit-1 during early stages of development of Sparus aurata larvae from slow and fast growing lines. Our project was a continuation of a previous BARD project and could be divided into five major parts: i) obtaining additional tools to those obtained in the previous project that are necessary to carry out the developmental study; ii) the developmental expression of growth-related genes and their cellular localization; iii) tissue-specific expression and effect of GH on expression of growth-related genes; iv) possible relationship between GH gene structure, growth rate and genetic selection; v) the possible role of the IGF system in gonadal development. The major findings of our research can be summarized as follows: 1) The cDNAs (complete or partial) coding for Sparus IGFBP-2, GH receptor and Pit-1 were cloned. Sequence comparison reveals that the primary structure of IGFBP-2 protein is 43-49% identical to that of zebrafish and other vertebrates. Intensive efforts resulted in cloning a fragment of 138 nucleotides, coding for 46 amino acids in the proximal end of the intracellular domain of GH receptor. This is the first fish GH receptor cDNA that had been cloned to date. The cloned fragment will enable us to complete the GH - receptor cloning. 2) IGF-I, IGF-II, IGFBP-2, and IGF receptor transcripts were detected by RT-PCR method throughout development in unfertilized eggs, embryos, and larvae suggesting that these mRNAs are products of both the maternal and the embryonic genomes. Preliminary RT-PCR analysis suggest that GH receptor transcript is present in post-hatching larvae already on day 1. 3) IGF-1R transcripts were detected in all tissues tested by RT-PCR with highest levels in gill cartilage, skin, kidney, heart, pyloric caeca, and brain. Northern blot analysis detected IGF receptor only in gonads, brain and gill cartilage but not in muscle; GH increased slightly brain and gill cartilage IGF-1R mRNA levels. 4) IGFBP-2 transcript were detected only in liver and gonads, when analyzed by Northern blots; RT-PCR analysis revealed expression in all tissues studied, with the highest levels found in liver, skin, gonad and pyloric caeca. 5) Expression of IGF-I, IGF-II, IGF-1R and IGFBP-2 was analyzed during gonadal development. High levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-2 expression were found in bisexual young gonads, which decreased during gonadal development. Regardless of maturational stage, IGF-II levels were higher than those of IGF-L 6) The GH gene was cloned and its structure was characterized. It contains minisatellites of tandem repeats in the first and third introns that result in high level of genetic polymorphism. 7) Analysis of the presence of IGF-I and two types of IGF receptor by immunohistochemistry revealed tissue- and stage-specific expression during larval development. Immunohistochemistry also showed that IGF-I and its receptors are present in both testicular and ovarian cells. Although at this stage we are not able to pinpoint which is the rate-limiting step causing the slow growth of Sparus aurata, our project (together with the previous BARD) yielded a great number of experimental tools both DNA probes and antibodies that will enable further studies on the factors regulating growth in Sparus aurata. Our expression studies and cellular localization shed new light on the tissue and developmental expression of growth-related genes in fish.

Abstract:
Our hypothesis was that postnatal stress exposure or sensory input alters brain activity, which induces acetylation and/or methylation on lysine residues of histone 3 and alters methylation levels in the promoter regions of stress-related genes, ultimately resulting in long-lasting changes in the stress-response set point. Therefore, the objectives of the proposal were: 1. To identify the levels of total histone 3 acetylation and different levels of methylation on lysine 9 and/or 14 during both heat and feed stress and challenge. 2. To evaluate the methylation and acetylation levels of histone 3 lysine 9 and/or 14 at the Bdnfpromoter during both heat and feed stress and challenge. 3. To evaluate the levels of the relevant methyltransferases and transmethylases during infliction of stress. 4. To identify the specific localization of the cells which respond to both specific histone modification and the enzyme involved by applying each of the stressors in the hypothalamus. 5. To evaluate the physiological effects of antisense knockdown of Ezh2 on the stress responses. 6. To measure the level of CpG methylation in the promoter region of BDNF in thermal treatments and free-fed, 12-hour fasted, and re-fed chicks during post-natal day 3, which is the critical period for feed-control establishment, and 10 days later to evaluate longterm effects. 7. The phenotypic effect of antisense “knock down” of the transmethylaseDNMT 3a. Background: The growing demand for improvements in poultry production requires an understanding of the mechanisms governing stress responses. Two of the major stressors affecting animal welfare and hence, the poultry industry in both the U.S. and Israel, are feed intake and thermal responses. Recently, it has been shown that the regulation of energy intake and expenditure, including feed intake and thermal regulation, resides in the hypothalamus and develops during a critical post-hatch period. However, little is known about the regulatory steps involved. The hypothesis to be tested in this proposal is that epigenetic changes in the hypothalamus during post-hatch early development determine the stress-response set point for both feed and thermal stressors. The ambitious goals that were set for this proposal were met. It was established that both stressors i.e. feed and thermal stress, can be manipulated during the critical period of development at day 3 to induce resilience to stress later in life. Specifically it was established that unfavorable nutritional conditions during early developmental periods or heat exposure influences subsequent adaptability to those same stressful conditions. Furthermore it was demonstrated that epigenetic marks on the promoter of genes involved in stress memory are altered both during stress, and as a result, later in life. Specifically it was demonstrated that fasting and heat had an effect on methylation and acetylation of histone 3 at various lysine residues in the hypothalamus during exposure to stress on day 3 and during stress challenge on day 10. Furthermore, the enzymes that perform these modifications are altered both during stress conditioning and challenge. Finally, these modifications are both necessary and sufficient, since antisense "knockdown" of these enzymes affects histone modifications, and as a consequence stress resilience. DNA methylation was also demonstrated at the promoters of genes involved in heat stress regulation and long-term resilience. It should be noted that the only goal that we did not meet because of technical reasons was No. 7. In conclusion: The outcome of this research may provide information for the improvement of stress responses in high yield poultry breeds using epigenetic adaptation approaches during critical periods in the course of early development in order to improve animal welfare even under suboptimum environmental conditions.
