Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate similarities and differences in the classroom discourse of male and female ESL teachers in the academic stream of one Western Australian tertiary institutions ELICOS program. Language and gender research generally suggests that males and females have different and quite distinctive communicative styles. This study attempts to examine if this finding is also manifested in male and female teachers discourse in adult ESL classrooms in the three main aspects of classroom interaction; giving explicit instructions, asking questions and providing verbal feedback, using Sinclair & Coulthards (1975) IRF framework. A sample of six teachers, three males and three females were observed through a process of non-participant observation and their lessons video-recorded in the naturalistic situation of the classroom in order to make a comparative analysis of their discourse.Teacher discourse in the three aspects of classroom interaction, namely, instructions, questioning and feedback, was examined with the purpose of exploring gender differences and similarities so that the reasons and implications for the manifestation of such similarities and differences can be further investigated. Conclusions were then made about the influence of traditional masculine and feminine speech styles on the discourse choices of the teachers. The discourse analysis found that more similarities than differences existed in the teachers classroom discourse supporting the notion that the choice of discourse features is dependent firstly on the context and secondly on the role of the interactants vis-à-vis each other in the community of practice. Although some differences emerged, the teachers in this study generally adopted a facilitative, cooperative speech style in their classroom discourse.

Abstract:
This dissertation interprets gender-differentiated vulnerability to drought within a rural community located in the dry zone, la zona seca, of Nicaragua, a region that has been identified by the government and NGO sector as suffering from prolonged and, since the 1970s, more frequent droughts.  A combination of gender, capitals, and vulnerability demonstrates the value in using a multidimensional perspective to look at the socioeconomic and cultural contexts that form the capacity individuals have had to reduce their long-term vulnerability to drought in Nicaragua.  Due to the place-based characteristics of gender as well as vulnerability the analysis is mainly based on people’s stories about the history of their lives.  Based on these stories a local level picture is created of the households’ situation over time, how their work strategies and management of resources have varied, and how they perceived changes in capacity and vulnerability in relation to continuity and change in the climate.  The issue of adaptive capacity, which currently is less covered in research on gender and vulnerability and recognized in the literature as in need of more attention, and how it distinguishes itself from coping capacity in relation to vulnerability, is placed at the center of analysis.  In an additional analysis of how Nicaragua’s hazard management policies look upon the role and importance of interaction among societal levels and actors in reducing hazard vulnerability I show how the discourse has moved from emergency response to risk management with an increased emphasis on capacity building.  However, the recognition to differentiated vulnerability is lacking which risks hampering a successful vulnerability reduction.

Dolmseth, Abigayle G. "Women and Economic Development in Latin America: A Comparative Study of the Gender-Differentiated Outcomes of ISI, Structural Adjustment, and the Agroexport Model." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2014. http://scholarship.claremont.edu/cmc_theses/845.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a comparative analysis of the gender-differentiated outcomes of three different types of development models implemented in Latin America: industrialization by import substitution, structural adjustment programs, and the agroexport model. In undertaking this thesis, I attempted to answer three related questions: first, were women affected differentially than men were by the implementation of these three models. Second, if women were differentially affected, was their experience also conditioned by other factors, like the sector in which they found employment, their location in rural or urban environments, and their level of education. Finally, given that both of the answer to the former two questions was yes, I attempted to answer the question of why this was happening. In answering this final question, I used the analytical framework provided by feminist economics. Ultimately, I posited that while women’s differential experience was determined in part by certain domestic and individual level factors, like cultural norms and laws preventing women from working in the formal economy, much of their experience has to do with the male bias that inheres in much of classical and neoclassical economic theory.

Hinton, Jennifer Jean. "Gender differentiated impacts and benefits of artisanal mining : engendering pathways out of poverty. A case study of Katwe-Kabatooro Town Council, Uganda." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/35920.

Full text
Abstract:
Artisanal and small scale mining (ASM) is a crucial livelihood for over 20 million miners in developing countries throughout the world (Veiga and Baker, 2004). Despite misperceptions of “mining as men’s work”, ~40-50% of Africa’s artisanal miners are women who occupy critical roles in commercial, domestic and social spheres (Lahiri Dutt, 2003; Hinton et al, 2003a). The widespread poverty, environmental degradation and poor social conditions which characterize the ASM poverty cycle are largely attributed to its informal nature and use of crude technologies while its capacity to reduce poverty through increased incomes is also well recognized. Numerous policy reforms and interventions have been implemented accordingly with variable success. This research posits that ASM policy and action must further be informed by understanding of factors that determine livelihood outcomes through a gender lens. Both quantitative and qualitative methods were used to investigate the gender-differentiated constraints facing women and men miners compared to those in fishing, trading and other activities as well as the main assets or poverty reducing measures to which they have access. Based on a case study in the salt mining community of Katwe-Kabatooro Town Council in Western Uganda, it was found that women are clearly disadvantaged in most assets that comprise the foundation for sustainable livelihoods. Nevertheless, many women miners’ vulnerability has prompted them to “trade up” their assets of labour, cash and growing social capital through livelihood diversification, leading to improved socio-economic and health outcomes. While this suggests a clear pathway out of poverty, the majority of women miners often cope by using strategies that compromise their wellbeing, with far reaching implications for themselves and the community. Although a number of women have been able to overcome major constraints, gender inequalities were shown to play a prominent role in exacerbating the ASM poverty cycle. Findings point to women’s lack of autonomy and decision-making power as a root cause of negative outcomes for health and wellbeing of both women and men. If ASM policy and technical intervention increase emphasis on building human and social capital, more success can be achieved in realizing the poverty reduction potential of ASM.

Abstract:
This research is about gender socialization of children going to Japanese primary schools in the 2010s: it shows the evidence of experiences taking place during differentiated socialization of girls and boys. The purpose of this study is to specify how pupils are acquiring and learning gender norms during their daily life, knowing that those processes are often raised but hardly described in related research works. To achieve this, three complementary methods were set: an ethnographic study, semi-directive interviews and special investigation schemes in order to discuss about gender issues with children. To write down children’s own words is a way to access their representation of sex differences. While being social actors of their own socialization, children are constructing masculinity and femininity, through language, external look, activities, plays, body staging, sexuality and feelings of love expression. Even if the school system organizes sex segregation and normalizes gender roles, children are negotiating those gender relations while performing in their own way the models that school and other social structures offer. Peer groups are also playing a significant role into these complex socialization processes. This thesis in Japanese studies is based on both gender studies and childhood studies

Abstract:
The notion of identity involves the presuppositions of private law withwhich the trend is marked by some «genericisms». That means conceptions who limitthe human gender's definition in specific and abstract features and withoutconsidering the sexually differentiated peculiarities. Nevertheless, the subject of rightwhen it's a feminine subject implies the considering of sexual characteristics, whichcannot be the same that those of the male subject. On the pretext of the gender equality, the right submits then the society to astandardization of the divergent interests and peculiar to every sex. It is then aquestion of showing at the same time the contribution of these conceptions, but alsotheir limits and thus the necessity of opening to the requirement of more«universalist» conceptions. Indeed, it must be demonstrated that only a universalitycan guarantee the recognition of the peculiarities and the feminine differences, suchas a feminine legal identity would admit it. If this study will face diverse currents andauthors of philosophy of the right, it will take for starting point the substantive lawestablished in its various disciplines, the criminal law with certain aspects of the laborlaw or the insurance law.The interest of the question is to allow a more precise evaluation of thequalifications around the woman as the subject of singular right, and by integratingthe contemporary criticisms, who were able to show the insufficiency of a simplygeneric thought to deal with questions so grave as the sexual differentiation in thecivil or labor law- criticisms who, however, hardly accepted the epistemological wayof the philosophy of the right in its specificity

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study focuses on three young women in their final year of school using data gathered during a year-long process of individual conversational interviews, the contents of which were largely determined by their interests. Three themes arise from critical incidents during this year - the debutante ball, teenage pregnancy and dieting. These themes are used to focus wide ranging explorations of what it is to be a young woman at this particular time. The broader cultural production of discursive positions available to, and developed by, these young women as part of their identity formation is discussed. Methodological issues concerning power relationships between research participants are also the focus of critical attention. It is considered that young women's bodies and bodily practices are central to understanding the processes involved in their identity formation. It is in this context that the focus turns to bodies that matter. In contemporary Western cultures 'adolescent bodies' could be said to matter 'too much' in the sense that they are increasingly the focus for disciplinary practices in institutions such as schooling, the church, the family, health care, health promotion and the media. This disciplining is legitimised because adolescence is socially constructed as a 'becoming'. In this case it is a matter of 'becoming woman'; a sort of apprenticeship which allows for knowledgeable others to provide not only guidance and nurturance, but discipline. Using insights gained from feminist poststructuralist theory and cultural feminism this thesis argues that the discourses and practices generated within and across institutions, which are normalised by their institutional base, are gender differentiated. The focus is on young women's embodied subjectivity and how the discourses and practices they engage with and in work to construct an ideal feminine body-subject. The discursive production of a gendered identity has a considerable impact on young women's health and their health-related behaviours. This is explored specifically in the thesis in relation to sexuality and the cultural production of the 'ideal' female body. It is argued that health education and health promotion strategies which are designed to influence young women's health related behaviours, need to consider the forms of power, knowledge and desire produced through young women's active engagement with institutionalised discourses of identity if they are to have an ongoing impact

Zangeneh, Masood. "Gender differentiated motivational orientation and its relationship with the acculturation process." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10500/19023.

Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to examine the associations among gender-differentiated motivational orientations (integrative and instrumental), acculturation success, and risky behaviours (illicit substance use and gambling behaviour) among Iranian youth who have immigrated to Toronto. DESIGN: Given the exploratory nature of the proposed research, a cross-sectional research design was used. SUBJECTS: A combination of purposive-proportional quota sampling and snowball sampling methods were employed. The sample for this research was comprised of 308 participants (M=155, F=153) who 1) were born in Iran, 2) had recently immigrated to Canada from Iran 2-8 years ago, and 3) were currently attending high school, enrolled in Grade 9, 10, 11, or 12 (ages 15 to 18) in Toronto. RESULTS: The results of the current study confirm 1) the findings in the existing literature that adherence to an instrumental motivational orientation is positively correlated with risktaking behaviours; 2) confirm some of the existing literature findings, which suggest that lower levels of acculturation are negatively associated with problem behaviours; 3) show that males possess an instrumental motivational orientation significantly more than females, and that females possess an integrative motivational orientation significantly more than males; 4) indicate that male participants show significantly lower levels of acculturation while female participants demonstrate higher level of acculturation, which confirms that acculturation is significantly determined by gender; and 5) partially support some of the claims in the literature; for example, it found males are more at risk for illicit drugs, while females to be more at risk for alcohol consumption. DISCUSSION The current study is among the first to examine the interrelationships among illicit substance use and gambling behaviour, acculturation success/stress, and motivational orientation among Iranian adolescent immigrants. To understand the predictors of success or failure among adolescent youth, replication of the current study is necessary.

Introduction: Change of gender differences of depression arises prominently in adolescents from 12-15 years old. Previous research points out that stressors, mastery, and rumination play important roles in this phenomenon; but few studies try to integrate the relationship among above-mentioned variables and build a concrete model. The present study will not only analyze gender differences in stressors, mastery, rumination and depression symptoms, but also integrate these variables into a stress process model. The stress process model used to dissect stress into three categories including primary stressors, moderating resources and mental health outcomes—depression. In present study, primary stressors will be divided into interpersonal and non-interpersonal categories; moderating resources include mastery and rumination, which will be divided into brooding and reflection. The study will focus on exploring the interplay between different types of stressors and moderating resources, and examining how they will affect adolescents’ depression symptoms. Purpose: By integrating above-mentioned variables that play important roles in affecting the gender difference of depression, the present study aims to understand the mechanisms behind depression of boys and girls. It may help further infer the difference between depressed and non-depressed persons, and as a springboard, may then help to develop adequate clinical intervention. Method: Study 1 and Study 2 examined psychometric properties of the Mastery Scale Chinese version (MS-C) and Children’s Depression Inventory 2 nd Inventory_Taiwan Version (CDI2_TW) with a sample of 466 junior high school students. Study 3 examined the relationships among stress (i.e., interpersonal/non-interpersonal stressors), rumination (brooding/reflection), mastery and depression symptoms in different gender to validate the Gender-Differentiated Model of Depression which was developed from stress process model. Results: The results indicate that: (1) The MS-C and CDI2_TW yielded good psychometric properties. Moreover, the MS-C scores correlated significantly and negatively with CDI2_TW. (2) Girls’ non-interpersonal stressor, brooding/reflection rumination, depression symptoms were significantly higher than boys’, but there was no significant difference in interpersonal stressor and mastery. (3) Girls’ brooding rumination significantly predicted depression symptoms. Regardless of gender, reflection rumination negatively but not significantly predicted depression symptoms. (4) Regardless of gender, mastery significantly negatively predicted depression symptoms. (5) If the stressor was more annoyed, girls would simultaneously use brooding/reflection rumination in response to stress; and boys would take different types of rumination to cope with stress dependent on the types of stressors, i.e., coping with interpersonal stress by brooding rumination. Discussion: Based on the above findings, the Gender-Differentiated Model of Depression will be compared to Nolen-Hoeksema et al’s gender different hypothesis. Possible applications and future directions are also addressed.

Jean-Pierre, Myrlande. "Les perceptions de la sexualité et les relations de couple de femmes haïtiennes immigrantes au Québec : pour une exploration des rapports hommes femmes en Haïti." Thèse, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1866/10606.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to explore the perceptions of Haitian women that had immigrated to Quebec in the past five years, of their sexual relationships with men and the extent to which it is reflected in the different types of conjugal relationships. After choosing a qualitative research method, the intersectional feminist theory has been adopted for the analysis. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 Haitian women, aged 18 and 60 years and having immigrated to Quebec in the past five years. The women’s perceptions of sexual relationships have been reported as being a set of practices and discourses interrelated built since childhood and reproducing the unequal relationships between men and women that exist in the Haitian society and in the couples. These unequal relationships are transmitted through the generations and through most of the social institutions such as family, school, culture, laws. This process is also influenced by socio-economic and power issues. The results of this research give scientific data on women sexuality and couple relationships as well as the influence of immigration process. These results also emphasize the need for the Haitian social work to encourage the development of economic empowerment of women and their participation in current debates in society on the development of women.

Rape has become the element sustaining the entire construction of Greek/Roman mythological cosmos. The frequency of rape stories found in antiquity basically creates hostility that serves to define femininity and masculinity. Among the great number of works in antiquity, Ovid’s Metamorphoses offers its readers an opportunity to see how literature can be utilized politically. This thesis is designed to examine rapes in Metamorphoses, in which transformations function for particular ends with the intention to expose the sexual deprivation in the genderly-sexed society. The study first explores the ancient culture behind the rampage of rape stories that helps establish the imbalanced gender relation. The subsequent chapters follow the three distinct categories of transformations in Metamorphoses: deception, solution, and punishment, to elaborate how transformations work to aggravate the dilemma confronted by the virgins discussed. To begin with, when transformations are abused to deceive the victims, the emphasis on naturalness of primal sex desires normally exonerates the sexual offenders. Second, as the nymphs are forced to accept unpleasant transformations so as to escape the threat of rape, they are not only silenced and isolated in their dehumanized form but also objectified as possessions to their pursuers. Finally, transformations conducted by goddesses on the rape victims reveal that the sexual violators are either justifiable or excusable while the marginalized victims undergo exceptional traumatic experience both physically and psychologically.
