Abstract:
Capacitive deionization (CDI) technology possessing excellent desalination performance and energy efficiency is currently being widely studied in seawater desalination. In this work, the graphene–composite carbon aerogels (GCCAs) easily prepared by an ambient pressure drying method served as electrodes to remove salt ions in aqueous solution by CDI. The microstructure of the obtained GCCAs was found to depend on the component content in the precursor solution, and could be controlled through varying the mass ratio of resorcinol and formaldehyde to graphene oxide (RF/GO). The surface characteristics and microstructure of GCCAs were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, the electrochemical tests and CDI experiments of GCCA electrodes were conducted in NaCl solution. Thanks to the reasonable pore structure and highly conductive network, GCCA-150 achieved the best salt adsorption capacity of 26.9 mg/g and 18.9 mg/g in NaCl solutions with concentrations of 500 mg/L and 250 mg/L, respectively.

Abstract:
SummaryThere is a growing need to analyze data sets characterized by several sets of variables observed on the same set of individuals. Such complex data structures are known as multiblock (or multiple-set) data sets. Multi-block data sets are encountered in diverse fields including bioinformatics, chemometrics, food analysis, etc. Generalized Canonical Correlation Analysis (GCCA) is a very powerful method to study this kind of relationships between blocks. It can also be viewed as a method for the integration of information from K > 2 distinct sources (Takane and Oshima-Takane 2002). In this paper, GCCA is considered in the context of multivariate functional data. Such data are treated as realizations of multivariate random processes. GCCA is a technique that allows the joint analysis of several sets of data through dimensionality reduction. The central problem of GCCA is to construct a series of components aiming to maximize the association among the multiple variable sets. This method will be presented for multivariate functional data. Finally, a practical example will be discussed.

Abstract:
Background: ynaecological cancers (GCCa) are common and have a significant mortality rate all over the world. Early diagnosis of cancer can play a key role in the treatment and survival of a patient. Identification, staging, treatment, and monitoring of gynaecological malignancies is being done successfully by nuclear medicines. Discussion: Currently, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and positron emission tomography (PET) centered imaging techniques are being developed for use in patients with GCCa as a diagnostic tool. The present work elucidates several clinical studies on the use of radiopharmaceuticals, based on their effectiveness, in the early detection and management of GCCa. It also highlights the importance of reconsidering the biology for nuclear imaging as a future modality for early, rapid and efficient diagnosis of gynecological cancers. This comprehensive review is a part of our study designed to detect gynaecological cancers at an early stage using radionuclide complex, 99m Tc-Cisplatin. Conclusion: This article summarizes the significance of radioscintigraphy such as single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and PET for identification of GCCa in the experimental humans and animals.

Abstract:
Abstract Mutations in ribosomal protein S19 (RPS19) gene have been found in 25% of patients affected with Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA). Two of the RPS19 mutations identified in DBA patients are located in the sequence upstream of the translational start site: a missense mutation g->t at −460 and a 4 bp insertion, gcca, 3 nt upstream of the 5′ end of the RPS19 promoter. All of the RPS19 mutations identified to date are expressed in the heterozygous state. In the present study, in a DBA patient from Ivory Coast we identified the gcca insertional mutation on both alleles. Diagnosis of DBA was made at the age of 3 months. No malformations were noted. The patient responded neither to steroid nor to IL-3 therapies. The patient was regularly transfused but without an effective iron chelation therapy. As a consequence DBA was complicated by a severe hemochromatosis with thyroid, parathyroid, and liver damage. The patient was enrolled into a metoclopramide protocol in our hospital when he was 12 year old. He had a partial response, with increased time intervals between transfusions. While analysis of the RPS19 gene did not identify a mutation in the coding sequence, the 4 bp insertion, gcca at nt − 631 was noted on both alleles. Mother was heterozygous for this mutation and strikingly the father was homozygous. Both parents are apparently healthy. In screening of 200 Caucasian control chromosomes and 100 chromosomes from Ivory Coast we did not identify the 4bp insertion, ruling out the possibility that it is a common polymorphism. A parental disomy was eliminated by a genescan microsatellite analysis using the microsatellites: D19S200, D19S197, and LIPE. To evaluate the effect of this mutation on erythroid differentiation, we isolated 30,000 CD34+ cells from peripheral blood of the patient and normal individuals. CD34+ cells were cultured for 7 days in methylcellulose with EPO, SCF, and IL-3. At day 7, erythroid colonies were isolated and cultured for additional 3 and 5 days in liquid medium. At D7, D10 and D12, aliquots of cells were collected and cloning efficiency and apoptosis was quantitated. RPS19 mRNA was assayed by quantitative RT-PCR and level of protein expression determined by Western blot analysis. The cloning efficiency of DBA erythroid progenitors was decreased by 2.6 fold compared to normal between D7 and D10 and by 3.5 fold between D10 and D12. No difference in apoptosis was noted between DBA and normal erythroid progenitors. Strikingly, during terminal erythroid differentiation, RPS19 mRNA and protein expression levels was similar in the DBA and normal erythroid cells. The presence of the homozygous mutation in the healthy father in conjunction with normal expression of RPS19 in the DBA erythroid cells imply that the gcca insertion at nt −631 is not deleterious and cannot by itself account for the DBA phenotype of our patient.

Abstract:
The proper solution of a multi-criteria group decision making (MCGDM) problem usually involves a series of critical issues that are to be dealt with, among which two are noteworthy, namely how to assign weights to the (possibly distinct) judgment criteria used by the different decision makers (DMs) and how to reach a satisfactory level of agreement between their individual decisions. Here we present a novel methodology to address these issues in an integrated and robust way, referred to as the canonical multi-criteria group decision making (CMCGDM) approach. CMCGDM is based on a generalized version of canonical correlation analysis (GCCA), which is employed for simultaneously computing the criteria weights that are associated with all DMs. Because the elicited weights maximize the linear correlation between all criteria at once, it is expected that the consensus measured between the DMs takes place in a more natural way, not necessitating the creation and combination of separate rankings for the different groups of criteria. CMCGDM also makes use of an extended version of TOPSIS, a multi-criteria technique that considers the symmetry of the distances to the positive and negative ideal solutions. The practical usefulness of the proposed approach is demonstrated through two revisited examples that were taken from the literature as well as other simulated cases. The achieved results reveal that CMCGDM is indeed a promising approach, being more robust to the problem of ranking irregularities than the extended version of TOPSIS when applied without GCCA.

Abstract:
We model dependencies between m multivariate continuous-valued information sources by a combination of (i) a generalized canonical correlations analysis (gCCA) to reduce dimensionality while preserving dependencies in m - 1 of them, and (ii) summarizing dependencies with the remaining one by associative clustering. This new combination of methods avoids multiway associative clustering which would require a multiway contingency table and hence suffer from curse of dimensionality of the table. The method is applied to summarizing properties of yeast stress by searching for dependencies (commonalities) between expression of genes of baker's yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae in various stressful treatments, and summarizing stress regulation by finally adding data about transcription factor binding sites.

Abstract:
A two-stage neural network architecture constructed by combining potential support vector machines (P-SVM) with genetic algorithm (GA) and gray correlation coefficient analysis (GCCA) is proposed for patent innovation factors evolution. The enterprises patent innovation is complex to conduct due to its nonlinearity of influenced factors. It is necessary to make a trade off among these factors when some of them conflict firstly. A novel way about nonlinear regression model with the potential support vector machines (P-SVM) is presented in this paper. In the model development, the genetic algorithm is employed to optimize P-SVM parameters selection. After the selected key factors by the PSVM with GA model, the main factors that affect patent innovation generation have been quantitatively studied using the method of gray correlation coefficient analysis. Using a set of real data in China, the results show that the methods developed in this paper can provide valuable information for patent innovation management and related municipal planning projects.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
Construction projects have developed over several decades through the advancement of technology, increased scarcity of resources and the ever increasing pressure of time and cost constraints. Because of new technology and modern construction methods, construction projects have become increasingly complex. These complexities inherently bring new risks that must be dealt with accordingly. A contract is the primary method through which risks are allocated between the Employer and the Contractor. The conditions allocating the risks legally bind both parties to accept responsibility of those risks, therefore it is important to understand the aspects of law that has bearing on contracts. In this thesis the scope is restricted to construction contracts. Because of the role that a contract plays, especially in the construction industry context, it is important to know the requirements of a modern contract to ensure the successful completion of projects and the continued sustainability of Employer-Contractor relationships. In South Africa, the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is a body that monitors developments in the construction industry. The CIDB has the authority to enforce legislation to ensure that contracts conform to a standard that protects the interests of both the Employer and the Contractor. One of the procurement documents endorsed by the CIDB is the General Conditions of Contract for Construction Works published by the South African Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE). The first edition of the GCC was published in 2004 (GCC 2004) and a revised second edition was published in 2010 (GCC 2010). In this study the GCC 2010 and the GCC 2004 are compared first through a content analysis, to establish the effect the revisions on the bias of the document (or favouring a particular party) and then by means of a survey. The objectives are: a. To test whether revisions to the GCC from the 2004 edition to the 2010 edition resulted in a change in bias (assuming it exists) and compliance with the requirements of the modern contract; b. To determine the extent and effect of alterations to standard clauses of the GCC 2010 on the way in which the contract favours a particular party; c. Providing recommendations for future revisions that would potentially improve project success, relationship building and reduce the need for significant alterations to the standard clauses. Although a construction contract is undertaken between the Employer and the Contractor, the Consultant (who is not party to the contract) commonly drafts the contract on behalf of the Employer. The findings of the study show that the revision had a significant impact on improving the clarity of the roles of the Employer and the Contractor. A marginal improvement was found in the area of payment operating mechanisms. The perceived fairness of the document neither increased nor decreased. Clauses on claims and disputes and risk and related matters were the two areas that respondents identified as having the most bias that may be detrimental to the success of a construction project. Despite survey respondents finding the GCC 2010 procurement document to be fair, clauses are still altered by Employers (probably through Consultants) resulting in a biased contract favouring the Employer. Employers and Consultants should thus be educated more on bias and fairness in contracts and on the implications of shifting more risk to Contractors by altering clauses. Ultimately, the success of any construction project is dependent on the attitudes of the participants. Even the most fair procurement document is not a substitute for a relationship built on honesty and trust.

Lenos, Angelos. "EU-GCC relationship : towards 'strategic partnership'." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2013. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/59738/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the EU-GCC relationship and tests the hypothesis that if the EU and the GCC states share interests and grand goals, to the extent that these are prioritised by the EU and its member states, then value-driven differences are subordinated to interests and as a result (i) the EU and the GCC states enhance their relationship towards a “strategic partnership” and (ii) the EU’s (self-) image as a foreign policy actor is weakened in terms of its normative (self-)image and enhanced in terms of its effectiveness as a useful ‘strategic partner’ in a multipolar and interdependent world. In doing so, the thesis attempts to provide a comprehensive conceptualisation of a ‘strategic partnership’ and to test it within the broader context of EU foreign policy, exploring the role of interests, values and (self-)images in the shaping of EFP. The framework of ‘strategic partnership’ is applied in two case studies of economics and politics; the EU-GCC negotiations for establishing a Free Trade Area and the cooperation of the EU and the GCC states in dealing with the crises in Yemen. The findings of the research suggest that the EU and the GCC states, to the extent that they prioritise their common interests and respond to each other’s (self-) images deriving from the current symmetrical power balance, are moving towards a strategic partnership. Despite the wide gap in the value systems of the parties, this factor has not been the most decisive for the development of this relationship. This conclusion calls for further exploration of the shaping and application of EFP, especially having in mind on one hand the ‘normative power’ argument and on the other hand the need of the EU to negotiate interests, values and perceptions when dealing with emerging powers. Regarding the concept of ‘strategic partnerships’ the research confirms the central role of the symmetrical power balance between the parties and their interdependency. It has identified a level of division of labour between the EU and the GCC states regarding regional challenges and it has highlighted the role of non state actors. It has also underlined the need for flexibility, questioning the role of cohesiveness and institutionalisation of interactions as prerequisites for a ‘strategic partnership’.

Abstract:
This thesis analyses the cost and profit efficiencies of the GCC banking sector over the period 1995-2000. Efficiencies are estimated using the most recent frontier technique, the Fourier Flexible form. The thesis also uses a logistic regression model to estimate the determinants of GCC banking efficiency. The findings show that the level of inefficiencies in the GCC banking industry ranges between 8 and 10% for costs, and 30 and 32 % for profits. There are no major differences in banks inefficiency levels among GCC countries. Moreover, inefficiencies show almost stable trends over 1995-2000. Comparisons of inefficiency levels across bank ownership type and assets size reveal that national banks are more cost efficient but less profit efficient than foreign banks. In terms of bank size, large banks are found to be more cost efficient but less profit efficient than other sized banks. The results also indicate that foreign banks have on average been operating with higher scale diseconomies than national banks. Moreover, scale diseconomies decline as the assets sizes of both national and foreign banks increase. The main results from our logistic regression are that the strengthening of financial capital is a central element explaining bank efficiency in the GCC region; however, the erosion in loan quality reduces banking sector efficiency. The main policy conclusion from this thesis is that GCC governments need to continue to implement financial reform packages that strengthen banking system soundness, foster banking competition, and also devise incentive schemes to improve managerial efficiency in order that GCC banks are better placed to meet the challenges of greater openness.

Abstract:
Function expansion is an important concept in software optimisation, its goal is to decrease execution time at the cost of an increase of the program binary size. This report presents options for fine tuning of function expansion in GCC aswell as the performance profit that can be achieved in execution time and binary program size by adjusting these parameters. Two GCC-flags for function expansion has been studied and tested with four different Unix tools. Results show that it is difficult to achieve improvements by adjusting the parameters and that the amount of iterations in the early inliner in GCC should increase as you increase the level of optimisation.
