Full textIn this thesis, we present an experiment producing sodium Bose-Einstein condensates. The use of an atom chip, giving access to highly elongated magnetic traps, allows to produce one-dimensional quantum gases in the quasi-condensate regime. We optimized evaporative cooling and atom transfer in the magnetic trap of the atom chip. We then turned to microwave Feshbach resonances, with the aim of controlling the interactions between atoms, which requires high microwave power. To achieve this, the atom chip encompasses a coplanar waveguide. Rabi oscillations measurements between the two hyperfine levels of the sodium ground state f=1 and f=2 show that we can achieve magnetic amplitudes of several gauss for the oscillating field. We have performed microwave spectroscopy of the molecular states in the [f1=1, f2=2] branch closest to the dissociation limit. The rapid loss of atoms observed close to the molecular resonances seems to limit their use as a tool for interaction control. In a second part, we numerically study the non-equilibrium dynamics of a one-dimensional Bose gas in a box, by solving the 1D Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system is driven out of equilibrium using an oscillating external potential. We focused on density profiles, energies and momentum distributions. Inverse scattering transform methods, with the calculation of the Lax spectrum, are used to study the solitons of the system

Full textOne-dimensional quantum many-body systems exhibit peculiar and intriguing behaviors as a consequence of the reduced dimensionality, which enhances the effect of fluctuations and correlations. The high degree of isolation and controllability of experiments manipulating ultra-cold atomic gases allows for the experimental simulation of text-book models, for which many theory tools are available for quantitative comparison. I will present instances of such efforts carried out during my PhD thesis, namely, the studies performed to investigate the behavior of 1D Bose gas (Lieb-Liniger gas) at equilibrium and beyond. An overview of the toolbox available to date to characterize the equilibrium thermodynamics of a Lieb-Liniger gas will be shown, followed by a detailed study of the breathing mode of such a system

Full textThanks to the experimental breakthrough of the last years in the manipulation of ultra cold atomic gases, it has become possible to realize low-dimensional and mesoscopic quantum fluids. The object of this thesis is the theoretical investigation of a few mesoscopic systems that can be realized with a one-dimensional Bose gas. These systems exhibit interesting quantum phenomena, and are potentially relevant for technological applications. We study the phenomenon of persistent currents induced by stirring the gas confined on a ring with a potential barrier, we examine the feasibility of a qubit based on the superposition of current states in a ring lattice threaded by a gauge field in the presence of a weak-link, and we investigate the dipole excitation of the gas in a split trap induced by an out-of-equilibrium displacement of the external potential. In all these cases, we apply a combination of analytical and numerical approaches that allow to cover all the interaction regimes. As a recurring theme, we disclose a so-far unknown regime of maximal screening of the barrier potential by the fluid, arising from the interplay of effects due to interactions and quantum fluctuations. These results have significant consequences for the behaviour of such systems and are important for the ongoing and future realization of ultracold atomic gases devices
