Rio de Janeiro is a destination known worldwide and it has been gaining notoriety as one of the most famous gay-friendly destinations in the world. Tourism is one of the main sources of income of the city, what benefits not only the private companies in this area but also the population in general. With this in mind, this dissertation intended to understand how tourists feel about Rio and, mainly, to understand their perspective on how gay-friendly Rio is. Through literature review concerning the theme, this study included qualitative and quantitative research in order to have a better understanding of the subject, besides the development of a new scale to measure the gay-friendliness of a destination. The data were obtained from personal interviews with gay people and from a survey conducted among gay tourists about their recent experiences in Rio. The results indicated what aspects are more important to gay tourists, such as security, expressing identities and sexuality openly, beyond stablishing relations between the different variables taken under consideration. It has been clear that the travel motivation varies according to the destination image and that satisfactory experiences tend to create destination loyalty, recommendation and revisit. With the results, it has been found the importance of touristic marketing in providing gay tourists with satisfactory visits. At last, the research proposes measures to be taken by the interested parts to attract and retain tourists that are so financial and economically valuable.

Full textUsing a "production of space" analysis adapted from the work of Henri Lefebvre, I examine the case of Montreal's gay village. I argue that the emergence of this space, in both material and symbolic terms, has led to a particular sense of "spatial identity" among many gay men in Montreal. I analyze the implications of these "space-based" identities for queer community formation and conclude that the Village constitutes a compromise with the dominant culture, rather than a radical form of spatial praxis.

The existing literature on intimate partner violence is vast, yet scarce about phenomenon of same sex intimate partner. Thus, this work aimed to study the prevalence of violence and violent dynamics in gay couples, lesbians and bisexuals, both in the role of victims and perpetrators in the past and present relationships, comparing the groups with each other. It was taken an online sample of 74 participants who self-perception as being gay, lesbian or bisexual. Gays were aged between 19 and 85 years (M= 29.88, SD= 12:38), lesbians between 21 and 52 years (M= 32.36, SD= 10:32) and bisexuals between 20 and 39 years (M= 25.18; DP = 6.27). The instrument used was the questionnaire "Violence and Abuse in Same-Sex Relationships" (Noret & Richards, 2003; translation made by Domingues, Sani & Soeiro, 2014), in which after a literature review about the implicit concepts, we proceeded to statistical analysis in order to meet the stated objectives. The main results show consistency with international and national studies have revealed, namely that violence within relationships of gays, lesbians and bisexuals exists and worrying rates. The three groups showed similar prevalence in all analyzed dimensions, being the most common type of violence, both received as practiced, psychological/emotional. Interestingly outing behavior, conduct specific to this type of population, was the type of violence least mentioned. So this is a population that should not be overlooked and which should work promoting intervention and prevention policies about the phenomenon of violence, knocking obstacles encountered by the revelation of this problem.

Full textSexual orientation identity involves private and public ways of self-identification therefore it is considered as a key multidimensional element in the identity of people. Moreover, it has direct influence in making decisions in the personal and interpersonal sphere. Nevertheless, in Peru there is no scale that evaluates this construct in lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people. Therefore, this research aimed to adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Identity Scale (LGBIS) proposed by Mohr and Kendra (2011) on a sample of 378 LGB Peruvian people. First of all, a linguistic adaptation of the scale was done. Later, appropriate validity evidence based on test content was assessed by 6 experts in the topic. Validity evidence based on internal structure was estimated by an exploratory factor analysis which showed a multidimensional solution of two factors. Consequently, this structure differed from the original version. The two dimensions were identified as: uncertainty and acceptance concerns (ordinal a = .88, EEM = 3.29) and identity integration (ordinal a = .91 EEM = 1.86), According to these results, a new scale was proposed: “The Lesbian, gay and bisexual dimensions of Sexual Orientation Identity Scale” (EDOS-LGB). In conclusion, results showed that interpretations based on the scores obtained by adapting the EDOSLGB presents validity and reliability evidence in lesbian, gay and bisexual people from Perú.

This is to demonstrate how are strongly marked by heteronormativity, understood as the organization of male sexuality, and how the privilege of this standard becomes invisible even homosexuality in the novels overall.

There is much social, cultural and academic debate on topics related to adoption by gay men. Literature on this subject refers to many variables in the formation of these families, highlighting gaps in the journey these men are taking. Bearing in mind the need for credible information, we sought to understand the process experienced by openly gay men and their adopted children in order to identify the key challenges. This was qualitative research carried out through semi-structured interviews with six men aged between 35 and 52 years old, when they adopted children aged between eight months and 14. We sought to identify different scenarios throughout the process, from the initial desire to adopt, to the necessary legal and personal preparation, as well as the daily routine of bringing up children of different ages. We identified similarities among parents who adopted children later in life, in particular their willingness to adopt children with varying profiles. These men are primary caregivers responsible for their children’s daily life and education. We also found both the decision to adopt and the process itself were carried out independently of family and friends. Men often have to deal with feelings of anxiety and fear throughout the process, as they slowly develop a closer relationship with, and support the needs of the adopted child. Changes in the parents’ daily routines, even if they were anticipated, were much bigger and difficult to cope with - as well as problems faced by single parents. It was concluded that the parents’ sexuality was less important in cases of single parent adoptions made later in life, in which parents were ill-prepared and lacked social support, highlighting the need for pre- and postadoption support
