Abstract:

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
A multi-phase project has developed a simplified portable analyzer emission test method for measuring NOx and CO emissions from natural gas-fired combustion sources. The method leverages the inherent linear performance of electrochemical cell-based technology to provide simplified procedures that will lower cost. This Phase 3 report complements earlier Phase 1 and Phase 2 documents that established the technological basis (i.e., linear performance) of the simplified method, developed a draft method, identified data gaps associated method procedures, and conducted limited lab and field tests to address the data gaps. Those efforts culminate with the Phase 3 report that includes the revised test method, discussion of the key elements of the method, and the rationale for their inclusion. Key outcomes are discussed, including advantages to users and to the quality of the measurement. For example, modification of the NO2 pre-check sequence and calibration gas concentration will have significant impacts on the quality of the NO2 calibration gas as manufactured, and the consistency of the measurement of the species. Plans are discussed for final phase tasks associated with sharing the method with EPA or state agencies and pursuing acceptance. .

Tossey, Brett, and Ramgopal Thodla. PR-180-094506-R01 Challenges for Safe and Reliable On-Shore Pipeline Transport of Supercritical CO2. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), September 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010712.

Full text
Abstract:
There is interest within the pipeline industry in transporting supercritical CO2 in pipelines. A significant issue is the lack of an independent industry standard for supercritical CO2 pipelines. Existing industry standard for liquid and gas transmission are used for mechanical design requirements, but selected properties of supercritical CO2 make it a unique product. Impurities in the gas steam, materials selection, and leak detection in supercritical CO2 require special consideration. The objective of this project is to engage the supercritical CO2 industry in a workshop and use their knowledge to complete a gap analysis. The project is divided into two main thrusts; survey of knowledge and gaps by conducting an industry workshop (Thrust 1) and to outline what efforts and work is needed to close these gaps in a limited way (Thrust 2). This report summarizes the results of both thrusts. This report summarizes the results of the gaps analysis. The primary finding is that the supercritical CO2 pipeline operators in the United States are confident that the designs of their transmission systems are safe and adequate. Another important finding was the need for improvement in the equation of state (EOS). Currently, most models fail to accurately predict the affects of coal combustion impurities on the phase behavior of supercritical CO2. Improvements in metering technology, materials selection criteria, and leak detection were also identified as gaps. The final gap that was identified was the need for a standardized blow-down procedure during system startup and shutdown. An industry standard specific to supercritical CO2 transportation should include sound engineering guidance covering each of these gaps. See the associated linked documents for appendices to this report.

Full text
Abstract:
Countries globally are committing to achieve future greenhouse gas emissions reductions to address our changing climate, as outlined in the Paris Agreement from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Conference of the Parties. These commitments, called nationally determined contributions (NDCs), are based on projected anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions levels across all sectors of the economy, including land use, land use change, and forestry (LULUCF) activities. Projecting LULUCF emissions is uniquely challenging, and the uncertainty of future LULUCF emissions could require additional mitigation efforts in the land use sectors to reduce the risk of NDC noncompliance. The objectives of this paper are to provide critical information on what forest sector mitigation activities are currently underway in the United States on private lands, review recent literature estimates of the mitigation potential from these activities (and associated economic costs), identify gaps in the literature where additional analytical work is needed, and provide recommendations for targeted mitigation strategies should US emissions approach or exceed targeted post-2020 NDC levels.

Abstract:
Despite the progress that has been made in the region to close the gaps and inequalities that affect people with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, stigma and discrimination continue to be obstacles that affect the social inclusion and full citizenship of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer and other (LGBTQ) people. In order to promote equal rights and opportunities for all LGBTQ people, it is crucial to have solid evidence that can inform policy design in the region. This paper presents a comprehensive review of quantitative studies that contribute to this discussion, addressing issues of social attitudes, the challenges of measuring the size of this population and their experiences of discrimination in several countries in the region.

George. PR-015-13603-R01 Meter Station Design Procedures to Minimize Pipe Flow-Induced Pulsation Error. Chantilly, Virginia: Pipeline Research Council International, Inc. (PRCI), October 2013. http://dx.doi.org/10.55274/r0010099.

Full text
Abstract:
This project explored the sources of flow-induced pulsations in natural gas meter stations and the detrimental effects the pulsations have on the measurement capabilities of three types of gas custody transfer meters: orifice meters, turbine meters, and ultrasonic meters. To supplement the PRCI-funded research on the effect of compressor pulsations on ultrasonic flow measurement, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has performed a study to identify best practices for meter station piping design that avoid generating or amplifying flow-induced pulsations. This study involved a literature review to identify features of meter station piping that (1) generate pulsations independently of compressors or (2) amplify pulsating flows entering station piping. Where possible, the study also worked to quantify the effect of flow-induced pulsations on meter accuracy. This information has been used to create best practices and methodologies for minimizing metering errors caused by pulsation. As a result of this research, various design techniques able to reduce or eliminate pulsations in meter station piping systems have been compiled. Mitigation practices specific to obstructions, flow restrictions, piping geometries, gaps, acoustically-induced pulsation, and flow-induced turbulence are discussed. Additionally, common methods of filtering high-frequency pulsations are discussed in detail.

Abstract:
Pipelines fail due to various causes. The "outside forces" incident category includes acts of man (such as impact damage by earth moving machinery) but it also embraces acts of nature. Outside forces has been the dominant incident category in most Western World oil and gas transmission pipeline systems. Incidents due to outside forces have been the leading cause of significant failures on transmission pipelines in the USA since formal record keeping and trend analysis of incidents began in the 1970's. This trend remains currently, with these results reflecting incident experience for 2002. While this situation is not expected to change in the near term, the recent data from 2002 indicate corrosion is overtaking outside force as the main failure cause. The objectives of this report are to evaluate current state of knowledge concerning assessment and management of mechanical damage to pipelines, and identify outstanding issues or gaps to be addressed by the industry. Motivation for such an evaluation and gaps analysis lies in several factors, including much work done has been recently done worldwide. Third-party damage is typically the largest incident category, with the largest consequences, and pending regulatory actions are consequence based, and will require a management strategy to deal with mechanical damage.
