Full textTraffic signals are an essential part of the functionality of the traffic network. At the moment there are no especially good tools or automated functions for monitoring the performance of traffic signals in wide areas and for long periods of time. Traffic Flow Garner (TFG) is an interface developed by Dynniq that transmits traffic signal data. It gives a new opportunity to monitor signalled intersections. Its real time data includes the status of signal groups and detectors and configuration data of the intersection. Several performance measures of traffic signals and traffic can be calculated from the data. Calculation of performance measures was studied from the data transmitted by the TFG interface. Two signalled intersections in Oulu were chosen for closer examination. One of them was also monitored at the location. Performance measures calculated from the TFG data were compared with the observed situation at the location. The following performance measures were studied in this thesis: - Traffic volumes - Proportion of detector occupancy and continuous occupancy time - Queue length - Maximum waiting time in queue in cycles (the momentary relation of a supply and demand) - Volume to capacity ratio - Control delay - Level of service - Driving away from the presence of the stop bar detector during red - Proportion of vehicles that arrive and leave the intersection during green - Green ending too early - Unnecessary green time The calculated performance measures corresponded well to the perceived traffic situation. However, the saturation flow rate of the lane affects the calculation of several measures strongly. It was estimated according to the lane type based on earlier studies. When there was no pedestrian crossing to be yielded, estimation of the saturation flow rate was easier and the results were better. Then, for example, the maximum queue length per minute corresponded well to the queue length that was perceived at the location. The maximum queue length did not correspond equally well to the perceived when there was a pedestrian crossing had to be yielded. However, it was mostly in the correct order. Momentary performance was best described by queue length and maximum wait time in queue. They describe well how a road user experiences the traffic situation and performance of the intersection. Performance of periods of 15 minutes and longer was best described by volume to capacity ratio, control delay and level of service. Other measures may be used to estimate, among others, the functionality of the green wave, the adequacy of the green time and unnecessary green time. Properties of storing the calculated measures into a database and properties of the user interface of the traffic performance monitoring system were specified. A performance monitoring system of traffic signals is intended to be implemented based on the results of this thesis. With real-time performance monitoring of traffic signals comprehensive computational information could be obtained instead of spotty or subjective observations about the traffic. Thanks to it changes in programming of traffic signals could be based on a distinctly more reliable view on the state of the traffic network. The road administrator could improve the level of the maintenance of traffic signals based on the calculated measures. It is also possible to observe the effects of changes in programming. Furthermore, automatic alarms could be used for exceptional situations that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to notice. Real-time monitoring enables the road administrator and, through applications, road users to have real-time understanding about the traffic situation

Full textThe Garner Valley site in California is a seismic, geotechnical and structural instrumented site. The structural recordings on the test structure provides data for soil-structure interaction studies. Soil structure interaction is the phenomenon that differentiate the response of a structure based on an perfectly rigid foundation within a perfectly rigid soil, from the response of a structure in reality. In order to analyse soil-structure interaction effects on the Garner Valley test structure, using the substructure analysis method, geotechnical and structural parameters which are necessary for the constitution of the foundation impedance function are analysed by a dynamic parametric analysis of the soil column under seismic load, using uniaxial linear equivalent model, from seismic and geotechnical in-situ data. The shear modulus reduction and hysteretic damping of the soil are therefore found and can be used in combination with geometrical and geotechnical data to calculate the springs and dashpots equations, used as solutions for the foundation impedance function needed in the substructure approach. The small size of the foundation at Garner Valley allows the non-rotational and non-torsional foundation hypothesis. Springs and dashpots are then implemented in addition of the fixed base model, horizontally and vertically. Kinematic interaction is also studied, even though the foundation size is small and the difference between foundation input motion and free field motion are minimal, the use of foundation input motion as input reduces maximum acceleration on top of the structure. This reduction matches the in-situ levels of maximum acceleration when the foundation is flexible, using springs and dashpots. The results of inertial interaction, period lengthening and damping increase, are also noticed, and compared to theoretical results.

Full textInterconnections are electrical conductive tracks that aim to transport electricity or digital signals between components in a circuit. The conventional way of doing this is to use connections of solid metal, since they have low electrical resistance and are thereby suitable conductors. In this study, different materials have been investigated for their suitability to be used as textile interconnections. Textile in-terconnections are needed in for instance medical measuring equipment garments. A textile interconnection in a garment needs to withstand washing and bending. In this study three conductive yarns are tested; Bekinox VN 12/2*275/175S, Shieldex 235/34 and Highflex 3981 7*1 Silver. A textile interconnection narrow fabric with four copper wires within, OHM-e-12-L-1, by the company Ohmatex has also been investigated. The conductive silicon Elastosil LR 3162 A/B has also been investigated for its suitability to fit as textile interconnection and as electrical contact with conductive yarns. Washing tests have been made to investigate how the materials electrical resistance is affected by washing. To measure and under-stand the materials flexibility and how the resistance is affected by bending of the material, the materials have been bended in a bending apparatus that has been developed in this study. It has also been investigated whether or not a silicon coat-ing, Dow Corning 3140 RTV Coating, of the yarns may protect them from the chemical and mechanical wearing of washing and bending. The change in re-sistance has then been compared to values of the uncoated yarns. Since the coat-ing is electrically isolating the yarns, screen printed contact points of Elastosil has been added and investigated. Bekinox withstands both washing and bending well. The electrical resistance of Shieldex increases by washing, but the silicon coated yarns increase less than the uncoated yarns. Shieldex withstands the bending test well and the change in re-sistance is low. Highflex passes the washing test well and has very low resistance. But the Highflex yarn is sensitive to mechanical deformation and gets damaged by the bending test. The silicon coating has no protecting effect here. Elastosil is not suitable as an interconnection and the contact points by Elastosil are neither working well together with the conductive yarns. But Elastosil do withstands both the washing and bending test well. The conductive narrow fabric by Ohmatex withstands both the washing and bending test well and it is suitable as an inter-connection.
Snayer, Leylanie. "Remediation and intertextuality in Garner's 'politically correct' representation of Cinderella." University of the Western Cape, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6257.
Full textFairy tales have been changing continuously. From the likes of the Greek and Chinese versions of the Cinderella tale, Cinderella has been transformed into other versions. Charles Perrault and The Brothers Grimm had their way with the story of Cinderella with both parties putting their own mark on the tale. Disney made the story notorious as the consumers mostly tend to remember Disney's version and not earlier writers of the story (Zipes, 1999). Since then, various other versions in the current sphere of story-telling, especially through movie-making, have had a series of re-telling of the story. James Finn Garner's "Politically Correct Bedtime Stories" has made its mark in the world of politically correct, versions of fairy tales. He has graced readers with his satire and thereby challenged the more traditional versions of the story of Cinderella (and others) by posing a dry, humorous twist and facing the 'issues' which underlie the social problems in Cinderella such as equality, sexism and patriarchal, inappropriate gender biased terminology. Garner takes it upon himself to remediate the story of Cinderella through transformations of events and socially structured power relations, reworking the plot and characters and reformulation of gender-biased terminology. This results in a witty politically correct remodelling of the story which upholds a general moral in line with the contemporary socio-political ethos, championing usage of politically correct language.

Full textHusqvarna is a company that manufactures workwear intended for work in the forest. On behalf of Husqvarna, the possibility of integrating electronics into workwear will be investigated, which is the basis for this work. Through a literature study possible techniques have been studied. Due to the fact that workwear usually is of woven structure, weaving was chosen as the technique. Different types of conductive materials were examined by measuring the electrical resistance. A selection was made of the conductive materials with the lowest resistance for further testing and prototype development. Specimens were woven with canals, into which the conductive material was inserted. In addition, specimens containing non-insulated conductive yarn were laminated. The purpose of the lamination was to insulate the conductive yarn and thereby protect the worker from electrical shocks and cause a short curcuit. Tests were then performed on the manufactured specimens which examined the resistance to washing and sweat. The washing test was done on the basis of SS-EN ISO 6330: 2012 and for the sweat test an own method was constructed, because there is currently no standard that involves sweat and conductive materials in textiles. After washing tests it turned out that the laminate is not to recommend as it came loose on the majority of the specimens. However, the electrical resistance was not significantly affected by the washing. The results obtained from the sweat test showed that the laminate prevented contact between the conductive lines. Nevertheless, the laminate is not to be preferred in this case due to how it was affected in the washing test. In addition, only those specimens that contained only FISK-cable managed to not create contact between the conductive paths. As electronics and textiles are not usually used together, the possibility of separating the different systems when recycling the garment is necessary. From an environmental point of view, it is therefore advantageous to integrate the electronics as little as possible, as it will then be easier to separate from the fabric. In addition, it allows for possible repairs of the various components, which can extend the life of the entire product. For the sake of comfort, however, the electronics and wiring must be integrated much more. The best option for integrating electronics into a garment for this purpose is probably to place the conduits in a lining fabric with a thin insulated cable lying in canals in the fabric. This study´s purpose was to determine whether it would be possible to integrate electronics into workwear, further product development and designwork is neccessary in order to create garments with smart features.

Full textSphingolipids are essential constituents of plasma membranes in all eukaryotic organisms. They also participate as signalling molecules in almost all physiological processes. Here G-protein coupled S1P receptors play an important role. These receptors are selectively addressed by natural ligand sphingosine-1-phosphate as well as by sphingosine analogues FTY720 and cis-4-methylsphingosine. This work describes the synthesis of fifteen sphingosine analogues with potential biological activity. For this purpose, the natural lead structure of D-erythro-sphingosine was modified at positions 1, 3 and/or 4. The biological studies of these compounds provided the first insights to the inhibition of S1P-induced calcium increase, the interaction with S1P receptors and the cellular localization in Chlamydia trachomatis infected cells. Moreover, an adapted method that allowed faster and adaptable access to 4-branched sphingosines was established.

Full textThe archives could seem an insignificant subject. It is still referring to past's utility and the need to conserve it, when our economic context place data, preferably recent, is at the system's heart. The present thesis is based on a study done in a French industrial public firm's research center. It is on three levels. The first level is the individual one, who works in about forty people department, where our participator observing took place. The second one is the "local" level which is this department itself, part of the third, the "global" one which is the whole center. We have taken care of the legislation, norms, behaviors and speeches, from the employees as well as from the management. If archiving is a special time in the everyday work life, we do not assist to a common "ritual". There is no collective interpretation, whatever the level, on these actions. Archive's position interrogate firm memory and sends back to its organization and its politics, and to its perpectives for the future

Full textSpiral garnets are well-documented metamorphic microstructures that have been observed in orogens throughout the world. The preferred orientation of spiral garnet axes has been proposed (Bell and Johnson, 1989) to record and preserve information about the timing, rate, and orientation of the tectonic-scale processes. Using the model of Be Spiral garnets are well-documented metamorphic microstructures that have been observed in orogens throughout the world. The preferred orientation of spiral garnet axes has been proposed (Bell and Johnson, 1989) to record and preserve information about the timing, rate, and orientation of the tectonic-scale processes. Using the model of Bell and Johnson (1989), Aerden et al. (2013) proposed a link between the preferred orientation of spiral garnets and changes in relative plate motion between Iberia and Africa. The goal of this thesis is to this relationship by absolutely dating, eight samples from the Betic-Rif arc with measurable spiral axis orientations were chosen for Sm-Nd garnet geochronology. Chapter one is a detailed literature review of prior work on the formation and interpretation of spiral garnets. In chapter two we present 11 bulk Sm-Nd garnet ages from eight samples, these ages range from 35.6 ± 2.8 to 13.62 ± 0.69 Ma. The results from the obtained bulk garnet ages reveal a more complex relationship between FIA orientations and plate motion that originally hypothesized in Aerden et al. (2013). Large-scale rigid block rotations that postdate garnet growth may have influenced the current orientation of FIA from the western Betic-Rif. In chapter three, zoned geochronology was conducted on a single sample from the Nevado-Filabride Complex. This study revealed spiral garnet formation occurring on a rapid timescale, just 〖0.45〗_(-0.32)^(+0.51) Myr. While other zoned garnet studies have shown similar rapid growth in subduction zone setting (Dragovic et al., 2012), this is the first such documentation of such rapid growth from a garnet hosting spiral inclusion trails in a regional metamorphic setting. We calculated strain rates considering different genetic models for the spiral inclusion trails either by garnet rotation in simple shear, or by episodic overgrowth of suborthogonal crenulation cleavages due to switching stress axes. In both cases a similar fast strain rate of ca. 10-13 s-1 was obtained, which is an order of magnitude faster than typical regional strain rates and faster than previous spiral garnet studies regardless of the method used to calculate strain-rate

Full textDuring the first half of the 20th century, several European avant-garde movements were introduced in Japan, where they grew within a short period of time, sometimes intermingling, which was quite inconceivable from an Occidental perspective. This characteristic was obvious in the case of Japanese surrealism, a synthetic cultural object. During the 1930s, the increasing pressure on artists and intellectuals gave it an even more singular dimension. Like many Japanese painters, Kitawaki Noboru (1901-1951) was interested in surrealism, but he quickly moved away from the Western model to begin a singular artistic exploration through his "Schematic Paintings", with which he aimed to construct a model of reality that appeared less and less ordered in a time of trouble and which consequently could no longer be understood. In this way he aimed to give back to man the place that should be his. Kitawaki’s attempts to draw inspiration from the most diverse fields, without any real temporal, geographical or disciplinary limitations, evoke the work of Renaissance polymath artists. His production, while inseparable from the context, cannot be perceived only in relation to historical events. The in-depth analysis of several of his writings and works, as well as the theoretical and practical schemas he developed (notably the question of the pictorial void) provide information on the painter's aim, which—in contrast to standards—was as much concerned with the background as it was with the motifs of his canvases, and which was more concerned with the manner in which elements were combined than with the elements themselves

Full textPathos is the main feature of the theatre of Garnier. Influenced by eloquence and Aristotle’s poetics, it represents grieves provoked but great misfortunes, in order to instruct and delight. A national disaster constitutes the terrible and pitiable subject of the play. The dramatic techniques Garnier builds up are likely to produce pathos. Many deadly events, following on an earlier disaster, occur in a very short time, but in a place where different points of view can easily be exposed by opposite characters. The scenery sets up an atmosphere of fear. The structure of the play emphasizes the predicament daused by emergency, lack of communication and defeat. But the heroes can overcome their fate when they conquer their inner liberty. The show and the dialogue constantly interact. Themes, style and prosody emphasize the physical signs of passion. As the chorus and most of the characters bewail their lot, lamentation spreads to the whole text. Pathos helps also to instruct : the public is requested to take part to the universal grief of man, liable to passion and to unsteady fortune, and who tries to guess the aims of transcendence

However, RSM results show that the off-stoichiometric YIG film on (111) GGG substrates can remain fully strained in plane with thickness from 23 nm to 74 nm; while the samples on (001) GGG substrates show different degrees of relaxation in-plane depending on film thickness. Magnetic characterization shows that the samples grown on (111) GGG substrates have saturation magnetization Ms~45 emu/cc, which is significantly smaller than standard YIG (~140 Ms~45/emu/cc). Furthermore, the Curie temperature of samples grown on (111) GGG is ~ 310K, in obvious contrast with standard YIG ~560K.

Leading this investigation is a narrator whose frustrations with isolation often result in passive aggressive behavior or violence that furthers her separation from others. Bone Garden proposes solidarity as a salted plot and despair as the bitter fruit harvested by those who believe in it.
