Cortazzi, Hugh, ed. Britain & Japan Biographical Portraits Vol IX. Amsterdam University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/9781898823278.

Full text
Abstract:
Published in association with the Japan Society and containing fifty-seven essays, this ninth volume in the series continues to celebrate the life and work of the men and women, both British and Japanese, who over time played an interesting and significant role in a wide variety of different spheres relating to the history of Anglo-Japanese relations and deserve to be recorded and remembered. Read together they give a picture, even if inevitably a partial one, of important facets of modern history and Anglo-Japanese institutions. They shed light on a number of controversial issues as well as illuminate past successes and failures. Structured thematically in four parts - Japan in Britain, Britain in Japan, Scholars and Writers, Politicians and Officials - the highlights in this volume include: The Great Japan Exhibition, 1981-82; Japanese Gardens and the Japanese Garden Society in the UK; Cricket in Late Edo and Meiji Japan; Norman Macrae, pioneering journalist of The Economist; Arthur Balfour - managing the emergence of Japan as a Great Power; Michio Morishima, an economist 'made in Japan'; and Margaret Thatcher - a pragmatist who radically improved Britain's image in Japan.

El cine de Gardel. Teseo, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.55778/ts877231342.

Full text
Abstract:

Francia, 1931.

Finch, Jonathan. Capability Brown, Royal Gardener: The Business of Place-Making in Northern Europe. Edited by Jan Woudstra. White Rose University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.22599/capabilitybrown.

Full text
Abstract:
Lancelot “Capability” Brown was one of the most influential landscape designers of the eighteenth-century at a time when Britain was changing radically from an agrarian to an industrial and colonial nation, whilst Europe was periodically convulsed by war and revolution. The extent and nature of his influence are, however, fiercely debated. Brown worked at hundreds of important sites across England and his name became synonymous with the “English Garden” style which was copied across Northern Europe and entranced Catherine the Great, who remodelled her landscapes in St Petersburg to reflect the new style. He was fêted in his time, and recognised by the Crown, but Brown’s style was readily copied over his later life and particularly after his death. Arguably, this ubiquity led to the denigration of his achievements and even his character, particularly by the agents of the Picturesque. The lack of any personal primary material from Brown - forcing scholars to rely on his landscapes, contracts and bank accounts - has hindered attempts to provide a rounded and credible account of the man and his works. However, by exploring his team of associates and his role as Royal Gardener, new light can be thrown on the man, his landscapes and his landscape legacy. Bringing together a number of perspectives from across Northern Europe, Capability Brown, Royal Gardener explores the lasting international impact of Brown. With Brown’s position as Royal Gardener at its heart, this book explores for the first time his business methods, working methods and European influence. It assesses how, crucially, Brown’s work practices placed him within the world of nurserymen and landscape designers, and how his business practices and long term relationships with draughtsmen and designers allowed him to manage a huge number of projects and a substantial financial turnover. This, in turn, allowed him to work in a way that promoted and advanced his style of landscape. Edited by Professor Jonathan Finch (University of York) and Dr Jan Woudstra (University of Sheffield), and with a varied range of engaging contributors drawn internationally from archaeology, art history, history and landscape architecture, Capability Brown, Royal Gardener weaves together strands from across a broad range of disciplinary interests. It makes an important contribution to the scholarly discussion of Brown’s work, the work of his collaborators, and legacy in the UK and across Northern Europe. Relevant to students and academics at all levels, this volume throws new light on Capability Brown and his impact on the business of place-making in Northern Europe.

Kirwan, Jon. An Avant-garde Theological Generation. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198819226.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book offers a clearer understanding of the nouvelle théologie, an influential French reform movement that flourished during the 1930s and 1940s, championed ressourcement, or, a ‘return to the sources’, and hoped to build a certain rapprochement with modernity by appropriating the historical method, aspects of phenomenology, and social engagement. Comprised of theologians and philosophers from the Jesuit theologate Fourvière in Lyon and the Dominican house at Le Saulchoir in Belgium, they were led by such figures as Henri de Lubac, Jean Daniélou, Marie Dominique Chenu, and Yves Congar. After identifying a lacuna in the secondary literature, the book remedies certain historical deficiencies by constructing a history more sensitive to the wider intellectual, political, economic, and cultural milieu of the French interwar crisis, that establishes continuity with the Modernist crisis and the First World War. It examines the modern French avant-garde generations that shaped intellectual and political thought in France. The historical narrative examines various stages of older generational influence on the development of the nouveaux théologiens, including the influence of the Modernists as well as older generations of Jesuit and Dominican mentors. Moreover, the effects of the First World War are examined, as is their religious formation in the 1920s, the emergence of their wider generation during the crisis years of the 1930s, and their own participation in the wider intellectual thirst for revolution. It explores the 1940s, when the generation of 1930 rose to prominence and the global triumph of their thought during the 1960s.

Grissom, Carol A. Producing Posies: A Technical Study of the Frances Jones Poetker Collection of Bouquet Holders at Smithsonian Gardens. Smithsonian Institution Scholarly Press, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.5479/si.26336971.

Full text
Abstract:

This book focuses on small decorative objects for holding flowers, mainly taken by women to the opera, theater, and balls during the nineteenth century and variously known as posy holders, bouquet holders, flower holders, tussie-mussies, and porte-bouquets. Queen Victoria popularized bouquet holders by appearing with one at the theater shortly after her accession to the throne at age 18, and many reflect designs associated with her reign (1838–1901). In England, the earliest holders were probably owned by the wealthy, but in the latter half of the nineteenth century the low cost of silver and silver plating placed this fashion within reach of a burgeoning middle class. In France, early holders were set with precious gems for the nobility, but thereafter most vases were in electrogilded brass often set with faux pearls and gems made of glass. Exotic silver filigree holders were imported from China and India, and filigree production in Birmingham, England, catered to the wealthy in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. Important catalogs of bouquet holder collections have been published, but bouquet holders are rarely marked, and attributions to place are often without basis. Prompted by a project undertaken by a conservator at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute in preparation for digitization of a large collection donated to Smithsonian Gardens by Frances J. Poetker, 239 holders in the catalog have been attributed to places of manufacture, often linked by designs and materials to those in other international collections. Research and detailed study of manufacture have even determined by whom some were made. This evidence-based technical study and reference guide accompanied by high-resolution photographs is intended to fll a signifcant gap in the available literature and serve as a resource for museums and collectors.
