Monageng, Itumeleng. "Optical and gamma-ray study of gamma-ray binaries." Doctoral thesis, University of Cape Town, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/29509.

Full text
Abstract:
Gamma-ray binary stars are intriguing interacting stellar systems that exhibit emission across the whole electromagnetic spectrum. This thesis is focused on optical and gamma-ray emission of gamma-ray binary stars (GRBis). I have performed radial velocity measurements of 1FGL J1018.6-5856 to derive the orbital parameters of the system. In particular, I derive, for the first time, the orbital eccentricity which, together with other parameters, enables us to attain the orbital geometry of the system. I also use the derived parameters to put constraints on the mass of the compact object. For a large range of orbital inclination angles, a neutron star is favoured, while a black hole is allowed for very low inclination angles. I have also explored the long term variability of the Be disc in LS I +61 303. Using the measured parameters of the Hα emission line together with a semi-analytical model which describes the motions of particles in the disc, I examine long term geometric changes of the Be disc in LS I +61 303. I have explored different possible scenarios for the Be disc changes by studying the variability of the eccentricity and argument of pericenter on the superorbital timescale. One of the effects we have examined from the implication of our results is the Kozai Lidov mechanism, which has so far only been explored theoretically. I have explored the Bethe-Heitler mechanism for the production of gamma-ray emission, where energetic protons collide with stellar photons to produce energetic electron-positron pairs which upscatter photons to high energies. This mechanism has been neglected in studies of photo-hadronic processes due to the larger radiative efficiency of pion production. I demonstrate, however, that the BetheHeitler process can dominate the radiative output at lower proton energies where pairs can form but not pions. I calculate the spectrum and modulated flux in the context of the pulsar wind scenario, with photon-photon absorption and cascading effects taken into account. The effects of the ambient magnetic field around the massive star are also considered, which result in quasi-isotropic gamma-ray emission, and the orbital modulation of the flux resulting in photon-photon absorption. The work presented in this thesis encompasses different observational and theoretical aspects of gamma-ray binaries in which I use data and modeling to address some of the puzzling features of these systems. These include understanding the nature of the compact object, and thereby the physical mechanism driving the multiwavelength emission, the variability of the Be disc and its long term interaction with the compact object, and the origin of high energy emission. The results and methods presented have potential implications not only for understanding these objects, but also for other classes of interacting binaries.

This work had the intention to contribute to the improvement in the quality of the values of k0 and Q0 for the reactions 74Se(n, γ) 75Se, 113In(n, γ) 114mIn, 186W(n, γ) 187W and 191Ir(n, γ) 192Ir. Measurements of the irradiated samples in the IEA-R1 reactor and the standard sources from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) were performed by high resolution gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. In order to better investigate the efficiencies in energy intervals where there were no experimental points, the Monte Carlo Method was applied. The original contributions of this work were: the covariance analysis associated to the Least Squares Method, which was used for the adequate treatment of the uncertainties for the reactions 74Se(n, γ) 75Se, 113In(n, γ) 114mIn, 186W(n, γ) 187W and 191Ir(n, γ) 192Ir studied in this work, where all the partial uncertainties involved in the process were used; the experimental determination of the self-shielding factors for thermal (Gth) and epithermal (Ge) neutrons used in the determinations of k0 and Q0 for the 113In(n, γ) 114mIn reaction and the experimental determination of the self-shielding factor for epithermal neutrons (Ge) used in the determinations of k0 and Q0 for the 186W(n, γ) 187W reaction, which were not observed in the literature, as well as the determination of k0 obtained for the 186W(n, γ) 187W reaction in the energy of 625,51 keV, which does not exist in the recommended literature. The values of k0 and Q0 obtained for all reactions were compared to the values found in the literature.

Smith, Terence Kenneth. "Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase." Thesis, University of Surrey, 1991. http://epubs.surrey.ac.uk/843067/.

Full text
Abstract:
The enzyme gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) has been investigated in detail, with respect to both its catalytic action and its involvement in amino acid translocation across cell membranes. A novel source of this enzyme was discovered, Caco-2 cell monolayers which show similar characteristics to those of the small intestine. The catalytic action of the enzyme in the cells, was shown to be similar to that of an isolated purified GGT, (bovine kidney) obtained commerical1y. The Caco-2 cell monolayers were used as an in vitro model to study the translocation of amino acids and dipeptides across these biological membranes. The movement of selected substrates was studied using radiochemical techniques. These studies strongly suggest the existence of two distinct transport pathways: an active pathway which is unidirectional, carrier-mediated, saturable, temperature dependent and some way dependent on GGT; a second translocation pathway which is passive, bidirectional, temperature independent and not directly affected by GGT. This evidence is the strongest thus far, to suggest the involvement of GGT, in the translocation of amino acids. However, it cannot be established if GGT is directly involved, ie: via the gamma-glutamyl cycle or whether indirectly via the catalytic formation of a 'messenger' which regulates the passive pathway. A series of gamma-glutamyl donors, acceptors and inhibitors, were synthesised and used to probe the active site of the catalytic action of this enzyme. Studies of the two halves of the ping-pong mechanism via a gamma-glutamyl-enzyme intermediate allowed probing of the gamma-glutamyl donor and the acceptor site respectively. Evidence for three distinct binding sites was shown, which could be fitted to the shape of glutathione, probably the natural donor. The gamma-glutamyl donor was shown to be non-stereospecifc, although its specificity towards chain length was shown to be greater than 104, with respect to ?-aspartyl and gamma-glutamyl. The site was shown for the first time to require both an a-amino and an a-carboxylic acid functional group to undergo binding. The only type of gamma-glutamyl donors were those with a secondary gamma-amide bond. In contrast the acceptor site was shown to be stereospecific, only allowing L-isomers to undergo transpeptidation, while only requiring an a-amino and an a-carbonyl group. The acceptor capability of a particular substrate, is dependent upon two factors. Firstly the pK of its a-amino group, since the pH of the solution will determine the amount of free base present, which is able to attack the gamma-glutamyl-enzyme intermediate. The second factor is governed by its structure, if it binds only to the acceptor or whether it binds to both the acceptor and gamma-glutamyl binding sites, thus inhibiting. It was also demonstrated that substrates which are able to interact with the carboxy terminus binding site, ie: the third site, have a cooperative effect on the gamma-glutamyl binding site, thus stimulating the hydrolysis of donors. Such compounds include maleic acid, N-acetyl-glycine, aminoacyl-glycines and certain donors ie: glutathione and gamma-glutamyl-p-nitroani1ide.

Leclerc, Troy T. "Variance in Fade-Time of a Gamma-Gamma Distributed Irradiance Signal." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2012. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/5396.

Full text
Abstract:
Free-space optical communications are predominantly hindered by optical turbulence, an effect caused by temperature and pressure variations within the atmosphere. The result is an optical wave interfering with itself due to multipath propagation via tiny refractive-index fluctuations across the wave-front. Optical communication systems are affected when the channel conditions induce fading in the irradiance signal that is received at the detector. The nature of optical interference imparted by the atmosphere is a random process and therefore the received irradiance signal is often characterized by an appropriate probability density function (PDF). Data collected during past free-space optical experiments in the atmosphere support the gamma-gamma distribution as a practical PDF model for received irradiance fluctuations, although the irradiance fluctuations do occasionally tend towards a lognormal distribution. Utilization of the gamma-gamma irradiance PDF allows for calculation of statistical moments of the irradiance threshold level-crossing distribution. Presented analysis focuses on the results of the gamma-gamma irradiance PDF. Previously, expressions were developed for the expected number of gamma-gamma distributed irradiance threshold level-crossings. Expressions for the mean square number of gamma-gamma distributed irradiance threshold level-crossings are derived and presented. The derived expressions lead to the mean and variance of signal fade time. Outcomes of the derived expressions are presented in relation to free-space optical communication system performance. Comparisons are made between the theoretical analysis and experimental data taken at the Innovative Science and Technology Facility (ISTEF) located at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The strength of the atmospheric turbulence is often characterized by three measurable parameters: the refractive index structure constant Cn2, the inner scale l0, and the outer scale L0. The optical path (L~1km) was instrumented such that direct comparisons could be drawn between the measured atmospheric turbulence parameters and the parameters of the gamma-gamma irradiance model. Variance of fade time data were found to agree well for smaller apertures where effects of aperture averaging are not present and in cases where scintillation is weak to moderate. It is suggested that a more appropriate PDF, with a heavier focus on aperture averaging, may be applied in future studies of these fade statistics.

Abstract:
Casein Kinase I (CKI) is one of the first serine/threonine protein kinase activities to be isolated and characterized. In vertebrates, CKI represent a multigene family with seven isoforms, alpha, beta, delta, ε, gamma1-3 for which, very little is known with respect to their biological functions. This study reports that stable overexpression of CKI-gamma2 into fibroblasts impairs cell morphology and the organization of the actin cytoskeleton in a kinase-dependent mechanism and cell proliferation through a kinase-independent mechanism. In addition, by immunofluorescence we determined the subcellular distribution of CKI-gamma2 to perinuclear vesicles. Furthermore, we established that a putative prenylation motif present in the C-terminal extension of CKI-gamma2 determines its proper subcellular localization.

Abstract:
This work focuses on the thermosetting materials area with applications in coatings or encapsulates for microelectronic devices and it seeks to obtain materials with better durability that after their working life, could be degraded and let the recuperation of the electronic material, which means a great advantage for the environment. The strategy followed has been the copolymerization of diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) with mono--lactones and condensed bis--lactones using several rare earth triflates and BF3·MEA as cationic initiators and several tertiary amines as anionic iniciators. This strategy lets the introduction of ester linkages, thermal and chemically cleavable and at the same time the reduction of the shrinkage which is produced during the curing process. The incorporation of aliphatic chains, that come from lactones, between cross-linking points increases the flexibility of the polymeric network and decreases the fragility of the material. The improvement of the mechanical properties also was studied adding layered montmorillonites.

Abstract:
In absence of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson the interaction among the gauge bosons becomes strong at high energies and influences the couplings between them. Each trilinear and quartic gauge boson vertex is characterised by a set of couplings which are expected to deviate from their SM values already at energies lower than the energy scale of the New Physics (NP). The precise measurement of gauge boson couplings can provide clues to the mechanism of the electroweak symmetry breaking and their anomalous values can be a sign of a NP effect beyond the SM. The sensitivity estimation of the measurement of charged trilinear gauge couplings (TGCs) at the Photon Collider based on TESLA parameters has been studied. The considered interactions are the single and double W boson production in electron-photon and photon-photon collisions (signals) at electron-electron centre-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. Signal and background events in the hadronic decay mode overlayed with the pileup, are simulated and analysed and a set of consecutive cuts is applied resulting in good signal efficiencies. The selected events are described with kinematical variables sensitive to TGCs. A new method has been applied to fit event angular distributions in the presence of anomalous TGCs expanding the dependence of the differential cross-section up to quadratic term in the TGCs. In the fit this expression is used to reweight the SM multi-dimensional binned distributions dependent on TGCs where also the uncertainty on the total normalisation is taken into account. Some sources of systematic errors are considered, as the beam energy, the W boson mass and the polarisation measurement. The estimated precisions of the TGC measurements at a photon collider are about one to two orders of magnitude higher than at LEP and Tevatron providing a measurement highly sensitive to the physics beyond the Standard Model. The optimisation of the forward region of the detector brings the amount of the low-energy background to the manageable level providing a clean environment for the TGC measurements at a photon collider with estimated precisions.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exposition of the various forms of Multivariate Gamma Distributions available in the literature. We begin by discussing the univariate gamma distributions and some of their most important properties. These distributions are then extended to the vector variate and matrix variate cases. Derivations, applications and properties are given for gamma distributions in these two categories. Further generalizations associated with several matrix variate gamma variables are also included.

Abstract:
External nuclear medicine diagnostic imaging of early primary and metastatic lung cancer tumors is difficult due to the poor sensitivity and resolution of existing gamma cameras. Nonimaging counting detectors used for internal tumor detection give ambiguous results because distant background variations are difficult to discriminate from neighboring tumor sites. This suggests that an internal imaging nuclear medicine probe, particularly an esophageal probe, may be advantageously used to detect small tumors because of the ability to discriminate against background variations and the capability to get close to sites neighboring the esophagus. The design, theory of operation, preliminary bench tests, characterization of noise behavior and optimization of such an imaging probe is the central theme of this work. The central concept lies in the representation of the aperture shell by a sequence of binary digits. This, coupled with the mode of operation which is data encoding within an axial slice of space, leads to the fundamental imaging equation in which the coding operation is conveniently described by a circulant matrix operator. The coding/decoding process is a classic coded-aperture problem, and various estimators to achieve decoding are discussed. Some estimators require a priori information about the object (or object class) being imaged; the only unbiased estimator that does not impose this requirement is the simple inverse-matrix operator. The effects of noise on the estimate (or reconstruction) is discussed for general noise models and various codes/decoding operators. The choice of an optimal aperture for detector count times of clinical relevance is examined using a statistical class-separability formalism.
