Abstract:
The Gambier Sub-basin lies on the southern Australian passive continental margin that formed during continental breakup and seafloor spreading between the Australian and Antarctic plates. In addition to the numerous modern submarine canyons reported on the southern Australian margin, three palaeo-canyon systems have been identified within the Gambier Limestone of the South Australian Gambier Sub-basin. Favourable environmental conditions during the Oligocene and Early Miocene led to deposition of the Gambier Limestone, a widespread, prograding extra-tropical carbonate platform. A world-wide glacio-eustatic sea level fall in the Early Oligocene exposed the shelf in the Gambier Subbasin, causing widespread erosion and minor fluvial incision on the shelf and subsequent formation of nick points at the shelf edge. During the following marine transgression later in the Oligocene, the shelf was inundated and the nick points provided conduits for erosive turbidity currents to enlarge the canyons to the spectacular dimensions observed on seismic data. No less than 20 successive canyon cut and fill events ranging from Late Oligocene to Middle Miocene have been observed and mapped on seismic data across the shelf in the Gambier Sub-basin. The thick, dominantly fine-grained carbonate sheet logically represents a potential regional seal to underlying clastic reservoirs. However, the possibility exists for carbonate reservoir sands to be present within the palaeo-canyons, sealed by surrounding fine-grained carbonates. Although no hydrocarbons have yet been identified in the carbonates of the Gambier Sub-basin, the canyons provide an analogue useful for establishing the scale, internal architecture and geometry of canyon fill systems.

Abstract:
Evaluation of Early Cretaceous source rocks within the onshore Victoria Otway Basin has revealed that thick, mature shales containing predominantly gas-prone and in local concentrations, oil-prone macerals exist northwest of Portland, in the Tyrendarra Embayment, and around the Port Campbell region.Current results of Rock-Eval, bulk composition, gas chromatography, and biomarker analyses, coupled with geohistory and hydrocarbon generation interpretations, indicate that at least three phases of oil generation and expulsion occurred within the basin. The earliest phase, which coincided with the maximum heatflow in the crust around 100 Ma, resulted in the charging of the existing stratigraphic/shoestring traps of the basin. The second and third phases occurred in the eastern end of the basin at around 85 and 60 Ma. There is also evidence to suggest that structural traps of the eastern areas were formed later, during Oligocene time, and that these traps are probably still receiving late-stage charges of hydrocarbons.Although the sparse well density in the basin has resulted in limited, non-uniforin sampling opportunities, several regions with good Early Cretaceous source rocks can be recognised. Some of these good source rock areas are in close proximity to the several known hydrocarbon shows and producing fields. These current studies, which also include a source rock risk analysis indicating source rock adequacy, show that locations for future exploration could include the Casterton-Portland-Mt Gambier western region, the Peterborough-Port Campbell eastern region, and the prospective close peripheries and offshore extensions of these regions.

Abstract:
The upper Middle Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous Relay Mountain Group is the lower part of the northern Tyaughton–Methow basin, southwestern British Columbia. The Relay Mountain Group consists of ~2700–3400 m of clastic rocks that we subdivide into three formal formations. The Callovian and lower Oxfordian Tyoax Pass Formation is marine shale and sandstone turbidites. The Teepee Mountain Formation consists of upper Oxfordian to Valanginian shallow marine clastic rocks with common Buchia and fluvial and marginal marine facies in the upper part of the unit in the northwest. These rocks overlie the lower formation across an abrupt conformable to disconformable contact. The Hauterivian (and Barremian?) Potato Range Formation consists of clastic rocks that are marine in the southeast, mainly nonmarine to the northwest, and derived from the west. This unit displays an abrupt conformable to disconformable contact with the middle formation and locally rests above the lower formation across an angular unconformity. The Relay Mountain Group and correlative strata of the southeastern Coast Belt form an overlap assemblage above the Bridge River and Cadwallader (including Methow) terranes and link them by late Middle Jurassic time. The early Relay Mountain Group appears to have been a fore-arc basin, possibly along an oblique–convergent margin in the middle unit. The upper unit indicates major changes to a back-arc basin linked to the Ottarasko, and possibly Gambier, arc to the west. This is the oldest probable link (~130 Ma) between the southeastern and southwestern Coast belts.

Abstract:
Basin analysis of Albian–Cenomanian rocks of the Tyaughton and Methow basins suggests that the two basins were filled by three principle petrofacies during a regionally significant contractional event. The Volcanic petrofacies, which occurs only in the Tyaughton basin, comprises west-derived volcaniclastic strata. This petrofacies is dominated by intermediate volcanic clasts and minor metavolcanic, sedimentary, and plutonic clasts. This petrofacies and correlatives to the west (Taylor Creek volcanics and the Gambier Group) are inferred to have been a volcanic cover and volcaniclastic apron to the Insular terrane. The Cherry petrofacies occurs in both the Tyaughton and the Methow basins. Paleocurrents suggest that these chert-rich sediments were shed both east and west off a topographic high that separated the two basins. The Cherry petrofacies is dominated by chert-lithic detritus with subordinate sedimentary and volcanic rock fragments. Locally, the petrofacies is characterized by clasts of chert, greenstone, serpentinite, and blueschist; all these lithologies are common in the unconformably underlying Bridge River terrane, which is inferred to have been the dominant source terrane.Rocks that contain the Arkosic petrofacies are 3–8 km thick in the Methow basin, but only a thin unit is present in the Tyaughton basin. This petrofacies is rich in quartz and feldspar, with lesser quantities of volcanic lithic and metamorphic lithic fragments. Detrital muscovite, which is the hallmark of this petrofacies, is interpreted to have been derived from granitic and metasedimentary rocks to the east. This petrofacies is interpreted to have been largely derived from the Omineca Crystalline Belt, which was rapidly uplifting during this time. The three petrofacies in the two basins provide the first provenance link between the Insular terrane to the west to what was then North America (Omineca Crystalline Belt and the Intermontane Belt) to the east; juxtaposition is inferred to have occurred in a contractional setting.

Abstract:
The southern Coast Mountains of British Columbia are characterized by voluminous plutonic and gneissic rocks of mainly Middle Jurassic to Eocene age (the Coast Plutonic Complex), as well as metamorphic rocks, folds, and thrust and reverse faults that mostly diverge eastward and westward from an axis within the present mountains, and by more localized Eocene and younger normal faults. In the southeastern Coast Mountains, mid-Cretaceous and younger plutons intrude Bridge River, Cadwallader, and Methow terranes and overlap Middle Jurassic through Early Cretaceous marine clastic rocks of the Tyaughton–Methow basin. The combination of geological data with new or reanalyzed geophysical data originating from Lithoprobe and related studies enables revised structural interpretations to be made to 20 km depth. Five seismic profiles show very cut-up and chaotic reflectivity that probably represents slices and segments of different deformed and rearranged rock assemblages. Surface geology, seismic interpretations, physical properties, and gravity data are combined in two profiles across the Coast Mountains to generate two new 2-D density models that are interpreted in terms of the geological units. The western part of the southern Coast Mountains consists primarily of Jurassic to mid-Cretaceous plutons to depths of 20 km with slices of Wrangellia (in the west) and Early Cretaceous volcanic and sedimentary rocks (Gambier group) in the upper 10 km. The eastern part, east of the Owl Creek fault, consists of slices of Cadwallader and Bridge River terranes and Tyaughton–Methow basin strata with limited slices of plutonic rocks at depths less than 10 km. Below that, Eocene and Late Cretaceous plutons dominate for another 10 km.

Abstract:
The mid-Cretaceous Peninsular Ranges orogeny occurred in the North American Cordillera and affected rocks from Mexico to Alaska. It formed when a marine trough, open for ∼35 million years, closed by westerly subduction beneath a 140–100 Ma arc complex. In Part I, we described the features of the orogen in Mexico and California, west to east: back-arc trough, magmatic arc, 140–100 Ma seaway, post-collisional 99–84 Ma granodioritic–tonalitic plutons emplaced into the orogenic hinterland during exhumation, an east-vergent thrust belt, and farther east, a flexural foredeep. In western Nevada, where the Luning–Fencemaker thrust might be a mid-Cretaceous feature, arc and post-collisional plutons occur in proximity. The orogen continues through the Helena salient and Washington Cascades. In British Columbia, rocks of the 130–100 Ma Gambier arc lie west of the exhumed orogenic hinterland and 99–84 Ma post-collisional plutons to collectively indicate westerly subduction. East-dipping reverse faults near Harrison Lake, active from ∼100 Ma until ∼90 Ma, shed 99–84 Ma debris westward into the Nanaimo back-arc region. Within Insular Alaska, the Early Cretaceous Gravina basinal arc assemblage was deformed at 100 Ma and flanked to the east by a high-grade hinterland cut by post-collisional plutons. In mainland Alaska, the 100 Ma collision of Wrangellia and the Yukon–Tanana–Farewell composite terrane occurred above a southward-dipping subduction zone as shown by the 130–100 Ma Chisana arc sitting on Wrangellia and southward-dipping, northerly vergent thrusts in the Lower Cretaceous Kahiltna basin to the north. The outboard back-arc region was filled with post-collisional detritus of the McHugh complex.

Abstract:
In this study, an attempt is made to discover the individual psychological characteristics of a modern young gambler. Gambling is considered as a pathological tendency to gambling. The study involved 40 young people aged 16 to 28, 20 boys and 20 girls, regular visitors of gaming computer clubs. 26 study participants spend more than 3 hours a day in the game. The study was conducted during the Covid-19 epidemic. The purpose of the study was to describe the portrait of a modern gambler. At the same time, we were interested in the manifestations of anxiety, aggressiveness and hostility detected by quantitative and qualitative research methods. Hostility was studied by the method of syndrome analysis. The first stage of the study was to conduct survey methods, including MMPI, the Bass-Perry questionnaire, the humorous phrases test, and the Rokich value orientation test. The second stage included methods of qualitative personality analysis. According to the MMPI questionnaire, normatively lowered personality profiles were obtained, which may be associated with an increased sense of caution and distrust. Profile increases were found on the psychasthenia scale in 26 of the examined, on the hypochondria scale in 23 of the examined, which suggests the presence of somatization of anxiety in the portrait of a gambler. Hostility as a factor of readiness for aggression positively correlates with most basic MMPI scales. A trend has been found: women are more hypochondriacal than men. The hand test results are consistent with the MMPI. According to the results of a pathopsychological examination, 22 of the examined revealed autoaggressive personality tendencies, somatization of anxiety. The maladaptivity of gamblers confirms the fear of being funny. For the averaged MMPI profiles, there are differences between gamblers and the control group on schizoidness at the trend level. This study has shown that anxiety and depression, traditionally attributed to players, can increase during Covid-19. Problematic, active players who are willing to play secretly during quarantine are probably at risk.

Abstract:
As part of research conducted for the New York State Office of Mental Health, New York members of ALMACA were sent a questionnaire inquiring into their experiences with compulsive gamblers. Out of 86 EAPs and providers replying to the survey 64% had identified compulsive gamblers. These gamblers represented 1.4% of the total client population. Fifty-nine percent of the respondents that had identified compulsive gamblers (71% of EAPs and 15% of service providers) made referrals to outside treatment facilities with pathological gambling as a primary (or secondary) problem. Seventy-eight percent of the organizations that had someone attend training/education sessions about compulsive gambling said they identified compulsive gambling employees in contrast with 45% of those that had not attended education/training sessions. Respondents indicated a need for basic, as well as advanced, training/education about compulsive gambling. There was also a recognition of the inadequacy of the existing level of treatment services, education and training in the state. The majority of the pathological gamblers presently seen by the New York State ALMACA members are addicted to chemicals, as well as gambling. This is in contrast with studies indicating that most compulsive gamblers are not dually addicted. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of theory and application.

Abstract:
A gambler with an initial bankroll is faced with a finite sequence of identical and independent bets. For each bet, he may wager up to his current bankroll, and will win this amount with probability p or lose it with probability 1-p. His problem is to devise a wagering strategy that will maximize his final expected utility with the side condition that the total amount wagered (i.e. the total ‘action’) be at least his initial bankroll. Our main result is an expression that characterizes when the strategy of placing equal-sized wagers on all bets is optimal. In particular, for a given bankroll B, utility function f (concave, increasing, differentiable), and n bets, we show that it is optimal to wager b/n on each bet if and only if the probability of winning each bet is less than or equal to some value p⋆∈[½,1] (where p⋆ is an explicit function of B, f, and n). We prove the result by using a basic nonlinear programming technique.

Abstract:
Anopheles gambiae Giles (Diptera: Culicidae) is the most prolific malaria vector in sub-Saharan Africa, where widespread insecticide resistance has been reported. An. gambiae laboratory strains are commonly used to study the basic biology of this important mosquito vector, and also in new insecticide discovery programs, where insecticide-susceptible and -resistant strains are often used to screen new molecules for potency and cross-resistance, respectively. This study investigated the toxicity of permethrin, a Type-I pyrethroid insecticide, and etofenprox, a non-ester containing pyrethroid insecticide, against An. gambiae at three life stages. This characterization was performed with susceptible (G3; MRA-112) and resistant (Akdr; MRA-1280) An. gambiae strains; the Akdr strain is known to contain the L1014F mutation in the voltage-sensitive sodium channel. Surprisingly, etofenprox displays a lower level of resistance than permethrin against all stages of mosquitoes, except in a headless larval paralysis assay designed to minimize penetration factors. In first-instar An. gambiae larvae, permethrin had significant resistance, determined by the resistance ratio (RR50 = 5), but etofenprox was not significantly different (RR50 = 3.4) from the wild-type strain. Fourth-instar larvae displayed the highest level of resistance for permethrin (RR50 = 108) and etofenprox (RR50 = 35). Permethrin (PC50 = 2 ppb) and etofenprox (PC50 = 9 ppb) resulted in headless larval paralysis (5-h), but resistance, albeit lower, was still present for permethrin (RR50 = 5) and etofenprox (RR50 = 6.9). In adult female mosquitoes, permethrin displayed higher resistance (RR50 = 14) compared to etofenprox (RR50 = 4.3). The level of etofenprox resistance was different from that previously reported for a similar Akron An. gambiae laboratory strain (MRA-913). The chemical synergists piperonyl butoxide (PBO) and diethyl maleate (DEM) were able to synergize permethrin, but not etofenprox in the resistant strain (Akdr). In conclusion, multiple mechanisms are likely involved in pyrethroid resistance, but resistance profiles are dependent upon selection. Etofenprox is an effective insecticide against An. gambiae in the lab but will likely suffer from resistance in the field.

Abstract:
Anopheles gambiaedensovirus (AgDNV) is a potential microbial agent for paratransgenesis and gene transduction inAn. gambiae, the major vector of human malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Understanding the interaction between AgDNV andAn. gambiaeis critical for using AgDNV in a basic and applied manner forAnophelesgene manipulation. Here, we tested the effects of mosquito age, sex, blood feeding status, and potential for horizontal transmission using an enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) reporter AgDNV system. Neither mosquito age at infection nor feeding regime affected viral titers. Female mosquitoes were more permissive to viral infection than males. Despite low viral titers, infected males were able to venereally transmit virus to females during mating, where the virus was localized with the transferred sperm in the spermathecae. These findings will be useful for designing AgDNV-based strategies to manipulateAnopheles gambiae.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the gambling factors related with the gambling problem level of adolescents to provide basic information for the prevention of adolescent gambling problems. The data was drawn from the 2015 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems of the Korea Center on Gambling Problems for Korean students in grades 7–11 (ages 13–17 years) and included 14,011 study subjects (average age 14.9 years, 52.5% male). The lifetime gambling behavior experience was 42.1%, and 24.2% had a gambling behavior experience within the past three months. The past three-month prevalence of problem gambling was 1.1%. The gambling factors related with the level of adolescent problem gambling include the presence of nearby gambling facilities, having personal relationships with people that gamble, a higher number of experienced gambling behaviors, male adolescents, and a greater amount of time spent gambling. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first report to identify gambling factors related with the level of adolescent problem gambling in Korean adolescents using national data. These findings suggest that gambling prevention efforts must consider not only access to individual adolescents as early intervention, but also environmental strategies such as accessibility regulations and alternative activities.

Abstract:
Dostoevsky’s spirit is broken by a difficult childhood, years of imprisonment and forced military service in the difficult conditions of remote Russia, and the shackles of married life with the “sick, hysterical widow ”. Wandering through dreamy Europe made him aware of the attachment to the Russian homeland and revealed love and allusion of peace; he falls in love with Ana by dictating the text of the “Gambler ”, which will provide them with bread and shelter in the days of losing the gambling luck and questionable existence. In his wandering through Europe as the “land of holy wonders”, Dostoevsky informs us through the confessions of the gambler Alexei about the temptations of the “world” addicted to the gambling table. The significance of divisive passions is questioned: those towards women, love and even more, gambling, destructive, demonic. In 27 days while he was presenting Ana with the thoughts of the main character of the “Gambler ”, and she was recording them in a transcript, the writer was going through his own agony. The novel will see the light of day, but unlike Alexei, a character waiting for a new tomorrow to decide on ending a life driven by an unhealthy addictive habit, Dostoevsky, after the novel ends, experiences catharsis and sails into economic security by taking royalties for this and subsequent novels. As when after a stormy night at sea, a sunny morning dawns, a hint of love, happiness and the desired family peace is prayed to the author. Ana will focus the writer, a gambler, on family life and caring for children, and abduct him from addiction by sailing with him to the next “storm”. The basic theme of the novel – the obsession with gambling – is the experience of Dostoevsky, a writer with “a heart in which God and Satan fight, and the pledge is human life.” In the days when in the hustle and bustle of modern life, COVID-19, complete human alienation and escalation of violence we turn to the spiritual, looking for a way out in the metaphysical, surreal, healing and nurturing, andrational and explainable does not offer a final answer, someone seeks a way out of addiction and someone in a classic, something familiar and valuable. Or in metaphysics that goes beyond the physical and the knowable, in an attempt to reach the higher, the spiritual. The return to the great connoisseur of the human psyche, Dostoevsky, in a return to the interest in man, the inspiration of the human and the humane, but also the space behind knowable and the “metaphysical drama”. The idea of the French writer Albarez that for Dostoevsky, “in contrast to most other novelists, man is primarily not a biological, social, economic, psychological, but a metaphysical being”, becomes understandable.

Abstract:
Many mosquito species, including the major malaria vector Anopheles gambiae, naturally undergo multiple reproductive cycles of blood feeding, egg development and egg laying in their lifespan. Such complex mosquito behavior is regularly overlooked when mosquitoes are experimentally infected with malaria parasites, limiting our ability to accurately describe potential effects on transmission. Here, we examine how Plasmodium falciparum development and transmission potential is impacted when infected mosquitoes feed an additional time. We measured P. falciparum oocyst size and performed sporozoite time course analyses to determine the parasite’s extrinsic incubation period (EIP), i.e. the time required by parasites to reach infectious sporozoite stages, in An. gambiae females blood fed either once or twice. An additional blood feed at 3 days post infection drastically accelerates oocyst growth rates, causing earlier sporozoite accumulation in the salivary glands, thereby shortening the EIP (reduction of 2.3 ± 0.4 days). Moreover, parasite growth is further accelerated in transgenic mosquitoes with reduced reproductive capacity, which mimic genetic modifications currently proposed in population suppression gene drives. We incorporate our shortened EIP values into a measure of transmission potential, the basic reproduction number R0, and find the average R0 is higher (range: 10.1%–12.1% increase) across sub-Saharan Africa than when using traditional EIP measurements. These data suggest that malaria elimination may be substantially more challenging and that younger mosquitoes or those with reduced reproductive ability may provide a larger contribution to infection than currently believed. Our findings have profound implications for current and future mosquito control interventions.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the great global game of chess of Neoimperialist played in South Asia. It explores that to fetch global capitalist designs, global forces have devised a global Neo-Orientalist game of chess in three perspectives, i.e. economic, cultural and political, for three-level players, i.e. great players, little players and domestic players. The economic ventures urge the need to divide the South Asian Muslims into good and bad categories through neo-orientalist cultural and political gambits, as is revealed from Nadeem Aslam's 'The Blind Man's Garden' (2013) that critiques the hegemony of Neo-imperialist global forces working purely for their global designs in the region. It exposes economic, political, cultural and strategic motives behind two basic goals: the establishment of neo-imperialism through the elimination of borders for neo-liberalist gains by homogenizing world culture; and the eradication of global terrorism for which war has already been launched there.

Abstract:
AbstractThe phenomenon that prior gains may increase people’s willingness to accept risky gambles is named as the house money effect (Thaler and Johnson, 1990). Many studies have shown that the “house money effect” is a robust phenomenon but few scholars explain the mechanism of it well. We suppose the reason for the house money effect is that the ante (starting amount) is from the prior gambling profits, and its potential loss has relatively low psychological value. To test this hypothesis, we designed a series of studies using two-stage gambles. A total of 915 university students participated. In Study 1, in addition to a standard condition (which replicated the basic effect), we test how people respond to “prospect theory, with memory” frame, a “concreteness” frame and “quasi-hedonic” editing. None of these types of frames result in a significant house money effect. In Study 2, we certify the reference point shift to 100 Yuan in the second-stage gamble, thus the house money effect can be regarded as the absence of loss aversion; Study 3, consisting of 3 sub-experiments, indicated that gambling profits and normal income will open different mental accounts which are spent quite differently. The pain of losing 100 Yuan allowance is more serious than that of losing 100 Yuan gambling wins. People will typically reject the gamble of 50/50 chance to gain or lose 100 Yuan if the ante is from the “normal income account”, but accept if the ante is from the “windfall account”. The results of the series of experiments prove the accuracy of our hypothesis mostly.

Abstract:
In this paper, which is the third installment of the author’s trilogy on margin loan pricing, we analyze 1367 monthly observations of the U.S. broker call money rate, e.g., the interest rate at which stockbrokers can borrow to fund their margin loans to retail clients. We describe the basic features and mean-reverting behavior of this series and juxtapose the empirically-derived laws of motion with the author’s prior theories of margin loan pricing (Garivaltis 2019a, 2019b). This allows us to derive stochastic differential equations that govern the evolution of the margin loan interest rate and the leverage ratios of sophisticated brokerage clients (namely, continuous-time Kelly gamblers). Finally, we apply Merton’s (1974) arbitrage theory of corporate liability pricing to study theoretical constraints on the risk premia that could be generated in the market for call money. Apparently, if there is no arbitrage in the U.S. financial markets, the implication is that the total volume of call loans must constitute north of 70 % of the value of all leveraged portfolios.

Abstract:
Keno is a renowned game of chance offered by both lotteries and casinos throughout the world. The premise of the game is simple: a set of numbers is drawn at random and players are paid for selecting all or most of those numbers in advance. The mathematical foundation governing the odds and payouts for these basic wagers is elementary. More sophisticated bets, however, have associated probabilities which cannot be easily calculated by applying a manageable series of formulas. As a result, keno’s wagering menu has remained stagnant since the game’s widespread inception. Namely, proposition bets, now commonplace in virtually every other form of gaming, have never been developed for keno to any large degree. This is both unfortunate and surprising because keno is ideally suited for such an expansion. Unlike most other lottery-style games, keno highlights all drawn numbers on a rectangular grid, creating random visual patterns at the conclusion of each drawing. Creative new wagers based on these patterns are rigorously derived herein. These new additions should greatly enhance the game for both gamblers and enterprising gaming operators alike.

Abstract:
The article analyzes prose works of the 19th–20th centuries, presenting verbal pictures of the fair environment. The concept of «fairs» is modeled on the material of the language of works of art by G. Kvitka-Osnovianenko, I. Nechui-Levytskii, S. Rudanskii, O. Vishnia.Several subconcepts have been implemented in them: fair as a cluster; fair as a voice; fair as a living element; fair and grassroots literature; fair as entertainment. The objects of analysis were the vocabulary and phraseology of the respective contexts, as well as stylistic techniques for creating a fair humorous color. There are several varieties of folklore texts (or folklore texts) used by writers as a means of stylizing the animal element at fairs in Ukraine, as well as expressing the variety of socio-cultural masks presented to them (salesman, Jew, gypsy, blind musician, petitioner, gambler, etc.). It is emphasized that the concept of «fair» in the relevant narrative texts retains signs of burlesque and enlightenment. Particular attention is paid in the article to the fact that the texts of fair laughter culture are focused on the traditions of the «bottom», which contrast with the traditions of secular literature and culture in general, that is, the traditions of «the top». In analyzing the verbal imagery of the fair in prose works, it is taken into account that the basic techniques of creating a humorous color are the amplification of titles, actions, processes, as well as pun, the contractual blending of high into low, book and spoken, concepts related to the concept. «yourown – someoneelse's».

Abstract:
Background: Increasingly, celebrities are used as spokespeople for nearly all types of marketing. Endorsements can build positive celebrity-brand associations, resulting in favorable brand, product, or issue knowledge. Focus of the Article: This project examines the impact of celebrity influence in social marketing campaigns. Source and receiver characteristics are used to explore how people react to such persuasive messages from celebrities and how those reactions influence behavior. Research Question: Do race (RQ1) and gender (RQ2) of celebrity influence perceptions of (a) credibility, (b) similarity, and (c) heuristic evaluation? How do these factors influence message evaluation (RQ3)? Perceptions of (a) source credibility and (b) similarity as well as (c) heuristic evaluations will increase positive message evaluations (H1). Such positive message evaluations will increase behavioral intentions (H4). Level of (a) perceived source credibility, (b) perceived similarity, and (c) heuristic evaluation of a message is negatively related to message reactance (H2). The level of psychological reactance to a message source is negatively related to behavioral intent related to the message topic (H3). Importance to the Social Marketing Field: The objective of this study is to better understand how characteristics of celebrities, perceptions of the celebrities, and psychological barriers impact intended behavior change attributed to a social marketing message. Because social marketing seeks behavior change as part of an exchange with the targeted audiences, this study contributes a basic understanding of how attributes of the speaker impact social marketing effectiveness. Methods: An experiment was conducted ( N = 798) comparing how persuasive messages from celebrities of different genders and races are perceived. Results: Results indicate that there are significant differences in how persuasive messages from female celebrities are received as compared to messages from male celebrities. Further, race was shown to play a role in feelings of psychological reactance in response to the persuasive messages. Recommendations for Research of Practice: Results suggests marketers should seek out celebrity spokespeople who have the ability to be well-liked by members of the targeted market. The desire to identify with the message source can be a significant enough benefit to inspire behavior change. Having a spokesperson the audience wants to align themselves with is positively correlated with behavioral intentions.

Abstract:
This paper uses the notion of animal spirits introduced by John Maynard Keynes in the General Theory, and more recently employed by George Akerloff and Robert Shiller in their book Animal Spirits, to explain the speculative bubbles and decisions for war from 1914 to 1945. Animal spirits are a spontaneous urge to action rather than inaction that produces decisions that are not bounded by rational calculations. My analysis shows how confidence, fear, and a propensity to gamble can encourage aggressive behavior that leads to speculative “bubbles” in financial markets and military or political crises. Elements of prospect theory are added to demonstrate how the presence of risk in crises tend to produce a very strong bias toward taking gambles to avoid economic or military loses. A basic premise of the paper is that war and economics were inexorably joined together by 1914 to a point where economic strength was as important as military might in determining the outcome of a war. The final section of the paper deals with the problem of measuring military and economic strength by using the Composite Index of National Capability created by the Correlates of War Project to evaluate the riskiness of the Schlieffen Plan in 1914 and the changes in military capability of major powers between 1914 and 1919.

Abstract:
Mosquito monitoring traps (i.e., CDC light traps) are crucial tools for basic vector ecology research, risk assessment, and vector control programs. Unfortunately, they are expensive which is often an issue in projects conducted in developing countries. Therefore, it would be desirable to have reliable but inexpensive alternatives based on existing consumer products. We compared an off-the-shelf DynaTrap (model DT160, CCFL tube 365 ± 3 nm UV) modified to fit a CDC trap collection bag and to use a 12V power supply, with two commonly used CDC traps: CDC Miniature Light Trap Model 512 (incandescent light, 6 Volt) and CDC Miniature Downdraft Blacklight (UV) Trap Model 912 (4-Watt blue-black-light tube, 12 Volt), in different ecological settings in southwest (Kenieroba) and northwest (Nioro du Sahel) Mali, West Africa. In northwest Mali, the modified DynaTrap caught a mean of 20.67 ± 2.8 females and 5.38 ± 1.0 male Aedes aegypti which was 16.55% and 10.78% more, respectively, than the CDC incandescent trap (control). The DynaTrap caught a mean of 29.75 ± 2.8 female and 17.92 ± 3.5 male Culex quinquefasciatus. which was 47.76% and 20.70% more than the control CDC incandescent trap. The DynaTrap caught a mean of 2.46 ± 0.5 females and 1.63 ± 0.6 males and 10.16% and 2.45% more female and male An. gambiae s.l., respectively, than the CDC incandescent trap. Trap and catch means were lower at the southwest Mali site. However, trap catch proportions by sex were similar to those in the northwest. The modified DynaTrap outperformed both CDC monitoring traps for less than one third of the cost including the cost of the DynaTrap modifications.

CNOOC Turns On the Taps at Two Bohai Sea Fields Production has begun at CNOOC Limited’s Luda 6-2 and Bozhong 26-3 oil field expansion in the Bohai Sea. Luda 6-2 is flowing ahead of schedule, utilizing existing processing facilities of the Suizhong 36-1 oil field. The project has built a new central platform. A total of 38 development wells are planned, including 29 production wells, eight water-injection wells, and one development-and-appraisal well. The project is expected to reach peak production of around 10,000 B/D in 2022. The Bozhong 26-3 oilfield expansion project has also come online. In addition to fully utilizing existing processing facilities, new unmanned wellhead and power platforms were built for the project. A total of eight development wells are planned, including five production wells, two water-injection wells, and one development-and-appraisal well. The project is expected to reach peak production of 2,670 B/D in 2021. CNOOC Limited holds 100% interest in both projects. PPL Awarded Abu Dhabi Offshore Exploration Block A consortium of four Pakistani companies led by Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) was awarded the exploration rights for Offshore Block 5 in Abu Dhabi’s second competitive block bid round. The award marks the first Pakistani company investment in and planned exploration for oil and gas in an Abu Dhabi concession as well as the first partnership between the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) and Pakistani energy companies. Other companies in the consortium include Mari Petroleum Company Limited, Oil and Gas Development Company Limited, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited. Under the terms of the agreement, the consortium will hold a 100% stake in the exploration phase, investing up to $304.7 million toward exploration and appraisal drilling, including a participation fee, to explore for and appraise oil and gas opportunities in the block that covers an offshore area of 6223 km2 and is located 100 km northeast of Abu Dhabi. “The PPL-led consortium is delighted to be selected for the concession award of Abu Dhabi’s Offshore Block 5,” said Moin Raza Khan, managing director and chief executive of PPL. “This award is not only a watershed moment for Pakistan and the Emirate of Abu Dhabi towards bilateral energy cooperation and economic links, but also offers an opportunity to strengthen strategic cooperation with ADNOC to share technical know-how and expertise.” Following a successful commercial discovery during the exploration phase, the consortium will have a production concession to develop and produce the discoveries. ADNOC has the option to hold a 60% stake in the production phase, which is 35 years from the commencement of the exploration phase. The block offers the potential to create significant in-country value for the UAE over the lifetime of the concession. In addition to drilling exploration and appraisal wells, the exploration phase will see the consortium leverage and contribute financially and technically to ADNOC’s mega seismic survey, which is acquiring 3D seismic data within the block area. The data already acquired over a large part of the block, combined with its proximity to existing oil and gas fields, suggest the concession area has promising potential. Beacon Offshore Secures Drillship for Shenandoah Work Beacon Offshore awarded Transocean a $252-million contract for use of its newbuild ultradeepwater drillship Deepwater Atlas to work in the Shenandoah field in the US Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The deal also includes a $30-million mobilization fee from Southeast Asia to the GOM. The Shenandoah program comprises two phases. Once delivered from the shipyard, the Deepwater Atlas is expected to begin operations in Q3 2022, initially using dual blowout preventers (BOP) rated to 15,000 psi. The duration of the drilling program is approximately 255 days and should result in $80 million in contract drilling revenue. Upon completion of initial drilling, a 20,000-psi BOP will be installed on the rig, making it Transocean’s second asset with a 20,000-psi-rated well-control system. The BOP installation and commissioning is expected to last 45 to 60 days, contributing $17 million in revenue. Following the 20,000-psi BOP installation, the Deepwater Atlas will begin the well completion program. The approximate duration of this phase is 275 days and should contribute $125 million in contract drilling revenue. Gambia Block Back on the Market The A1 block offshore Gambia is available for licensing again following a $29.3-million settlement with BP for failing to meet its drilling obligations there, according to the Gambian government. The oil major failed to drill a well before the initial exploration period expired on 29 July. “The A1 Block will revert to the government, free of all encumbrances,” the government statement said. “With BP’s exit, the A1 Block will now be on the market for licensing.” BP was awarded the block’s exploration rights in 2019. Brazil’s 3R Petroleum Negotiating Potiguar Purchase Petrobras is in talks with 3R Petroleum to sell a group of assets in the Potiguar basin for more than $1 billion. In a recent securities filing, Petrobras revealed that 3R presented the best offer in public bidding for the assets in the northeastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, known collectively as Polo Potiguar. The assets include 23,000 B/D of onshore and shallow-water oil production, according to 2020 bidding documents. It also includes the Potiguar Clara Camarao Refinery, which has installed capacity of 39,600 B/D. For 3R, the acquisition would more than double the company’s oil production and launch it into the top tier of Brazil’s independent producers, along with Enauta Participacoes and PetroRio. A successful sale would eliminate a noncore asset for Petrobras in a bid to reduce debt and focus on deepwater oil production. Petrobras Spuds Aram Block Wildcat Petrobras has started drilling a wildcat well in the Aram block of the pre-salt of the Santos Basin using Constellation drillship Brava Star, according to the National Petroleum Agency (ANP). The Aram block is operated by Petrobras (80%) in partnership with CNODC, a unit of China National Petroleum Corp. (20%). The two companies purchased the area in the only bid of the 6th Pre-Salt Round in 2019. They paid $1.24 billion in signature bonuses and the minimum allowed profit oil of 29.96%. Drilling at Aram began on 24 August. With the new Petrobras well, Brazil returned to record levels in exploratory activity seen only in the pre-pandemic period. In all, five wells were drilled in the country during August—the highest number in a single month since May 2019. DNO Begins Drilling at Gomez DNO has kicked off an exploration well at its Gomez prospect on PL006C license offshore Norway. The probe will be drilled to a depth of around 3300 m below sea level, targeting Paleocene-age formations. DNO Norge AS holds a 65% operated interest in the license; Aker BP holds the balance. Aker BP originally had a 15% interest but recently acquired another 20% interest in PL006C from DNO under a swap agreement in which DNO picked up a 25% participating interest in PL1085 (Tanumåsen) and increased its share from 20 to 30% in PL906 (Mugnetind). The swap, pending government approval, will diversify Aker’s position in the southern North Sea. The Gomez well is being drilled using the Borgland Dolphin. The well is expected to take 45 days. Predrill reserve estimates range from 26 to 80 million BOE. The well is close to existing infrastructure, including the Tor and Ekofisk complexes. The Gomez well is one of three exploration wells scheduled this year. The first, Røver Nord (DNO 20%), resulted in what is likely a commercial discovery. Following Gomez, Mugnetind is expected to spud in Q4 2021. Petrobras Starts Production of FPSO Carioca in Sépia Field Petrobras began producing oil and natural gas from FPSO Carioca, the first platform in Sépia field, in the Santos Basin presalt. The FPSO is located approximately 200 km off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, in water depths of 2200 m. The FPSO, chartered from Modec, has the capacity to process up to 180,000 B/D and to compress up to 6 million m3 of natural gas. Seven producing wells and four injection wells will be hooked into the FPSO. The oil production will be transported by offloading vessels, while the gas production will be moved through the presalt gas pipeline routes. The project also has a system to remove CO2 from the gas produced and reinject it into the reservoir, reducing the release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and improving oil recovery. The Sépia shared reservoir comprises the Sépia and Sépia Leste fields, located in the Transfer of Rights and Concession (BMS24) areas, respectively, and operated by Petrobras (97.6%) in partnership with Petrogal Brasil (2.4%).

Abstract:
A great deal of research on the psychology of gambling has been conducted that has looked at non-experienced gamblers in laboratory or classroom settings. Yet there has been comparatively little research examining the practices and beliefs of actual gamblers within their natural gambling context. The current research contributes to the naturalistic study of casino gamblers. It reports the results of 10 weeks of ethnographic participant observation conducted in 1999 in two Indiana riverboat casinos located about 1/2 hour from Chicago. The research examines blackjack players' strategies for and beliefs about winning as explained and understood by the gamblers themselves. It uses blackjack's basic strategy and card counting as organizing principles around which to discuss and assess these strategies and beliefs.

Abstract:
In the New Normal Era, cleanliness is very important to prevent the spread of Covid 19, therefore a garment that has antibacterial properties is needed, which is obtained from bamboo fibers and natural dyes. The author formulates bamboo fibers which are used as the basic material for making fabrics that contain anti-bacterial and natural dyes which are obtained by combining dragon fruit peel, gambier, lime and betel leaf which also contain antibacterial. The softening solution, namely NaOH, is then cleaned of chemical liquid and continued to separate the desired bamboo fibers. Furthermore, after obtaining bamboo fibers, clothes are made according to what they want. The dyeing of the fabric uses the method of dyeing the cloth from bamboo fibers that have been previously mordant at room temperature (27-30oC) for 10 minutes, then drying for 10 minutes. The staining will be carried out by immersing 10 times. Based on several previous studies that the bamboo fiber produced is influenced by the levels of chemicals used in the softening process, and the thickness of the blades used. The thinner the blade is used, the faster the process of forming bamboo fibers. Based on previous literature studies, it is stated that the use of natural combination ingredients consisting of dragon fruit peel, gambier, lime, betel leaf and banana sap can produce antibacterial clothing to support activities carried out in the post-pandemic period like today.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Wolbachia (Alphaproteobacteria, Rickettsiales) is an intraovarially transmitted symbiont of insects able to exert striking phenotypes, including reproductive manipulations and pathogen blocking. These phenotypes make Wolbachia a promising tool to combat mosquito-borne diseases. Although Wolbachia is present in the majority of terrestrial arthropods, including many disease vectors, it was considered absent from Anopheles gambiae mosquitos, the main vectors of malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2014, Wolbachia sequences were detected in A. gambiae samples collected in Burkina Faso. Subsequently, similar evidence came from collections all over Africa, revealing a high Wolbachia 16S rRNA sequence diversity, low abundance, and a lack of congruence between host and symbiont phylogenies. Here, we reanalyze and discuss recent evidence on the presence of Wolbachia sequences in A. gambiae. We find that although detected at increasing frequencies, the unusual properties of these Wolbachia sequences render them insufficient to diagnose natural infections in A. gambiae. Future studies should focus on uncovering the origin of Wolbachia sequence variants in Anopheles and seeking sequence-independent evidence for this new symbiosis. Understanding the ecology of Anopheles mosquitos and their interactions with Wolbachia will be key in designing successful, integrative approaches to limit malaria spread. Although the prospect of using Wolbachia to fight malaria is intriguing, the newly discovered strains do not bring it closer to realization. IMPORTANCE Anopheles gambiae mosquitos are the main vectors of malaria, threatening around half of the world’s population. The bacterial symbiont Wolbachia can interfere with disease transmission by other important insect vectors, but until recently, it was thought to be absent from natural A. gambiae populations. Here, we critically analyze the genomic, metagenomic, PCR, imaging, and phenotypic data presented in support of the presence of natural Wolbachia infections in A. gambiae. We find that they are insufficient to diagnose Wolbachia infections and argue for the need of obtaining robust data confirming basic Wolbachia characteristics in this system. Determining the Wolbachia infection status of Anopheles is critical due to its potential to influence Anopheles population structure and Plasmodium transmission.

Abstract:
AbstractThe mosquito Anopheles gambiae s.s. is distributed across most of sub-Saharan Africa and is of major scientific and public health interest for being an African malaria vector. Here we present population genomic analyses of 111 specimens sampled from west to east Africa, including the first whole genome sequences from oceanic islands, the Comoros. Genetic distances between populations of A. gambiae are discordant with geographic distances but are consistent with a stepwise migration scenario in which the species increases its range from west to east Africa through consecutive founder events over the last ~200,000 years. Geological barriers like the Congo River basin and the East African rift seem to play an important role in shaping this process. Moreover, we find a high degree of genetic isolation of populations on the Comoros, confirming the potential of these islands as candidate sites for potential field trials of genetically engineered mosquitoes for malaria control.

Abstract:
AbstractNowadays, online gambling has a great negative impact on the society. In order to study the effect of people’s psychological factors, anti-gambling policy, and social network topology on online gambling dynamics, a new SHGD (susceptible–hesitator–gambler–disclaimer) online gambling spreading model is proposed on scale-free networks. The spreading dynamics of online gambling is studied. The basic reproductive number $R_{0}$ R 0 is got and analyzed. The basic reproductive number $R_{0}$ R 0 is related to anti-gambling policy and the network topology. Then, gambling-free equilibrium $E_{0}$ E 0 and gambling-prevailing equilibrium $E_{ +} $ E + are obtained. The global stability of $E_{0}$ E 0 is analyzed. The global attractivity of $E_{ +} $ E + and the persistence of online gambling phenomenon are studied. Finally, the theoretical results are verified by some simulations.

Abstract:
The predominant gambling policy to respond to the adverse consequences of excessive gambling has been the Reno Model, which places the responsibility for gambling-caused problems on gamblers themselves. The newly implemented Japanese gambling policy, which shares basic premises with the Reno Model, focuses on the individual pathology of gamblers. However, this model lacks other critical perspectives: environmental and structural factors. To fully understand the harms caused by gambling; it is important to also pay attention to the negative consequences for affected others. In this brief report, we explore family members’ experiences of gambling problems within the specific context of the Japanese gambling policy. Interviews with family members reveal self-stigma of being bad parents which elicits shame and efforts to maintain secrecy, as well as public stigma involving labeling, isolation, risks of status loss, social exclusion and discrimination. The focus on individual pathology in Japanese legislation as well as in public and professional perception, reinforces self-blame, anxiety, and remorse on the part of affected family members. When contrasted with the lived experiences of gamblers’ family members, the inconsistencies and unreasonableness of the individual pathology paradigm in Japanese gambling policy become evident. It is necessary to shift the focus of gambling policies from individual to socio-political-cultural factors, investigating how these factors influence gambling-caused harm, especially in the Japanese context.

Abstract:
Emotional facial expressions are ubiquitous and potent social stimuli that can signal favorable and unfavorable conditions. Previous research demonstrates that emotional expressions influence preference judgments, basic approach-avoidance behaviors, and reward learning. We examined whether emotional expressions can influence decisions such as choices between gambles. Based on theories of affective cue processing, we predicted greater risk taking after positive than negative expressions. This hypothesis was tested in four experiments across tasks that varied in implementation of risks, payoffs, probabilities, and temporal decision requirements. Facial expressions were presented unobtrusively and were uninformative about the choice. In all experiments, the likelihood of a risky choice was greater after exposure to positive versus neutral or negative expressions. Similar effects on risky choice occurred after presentation of different negative expressions (e.g., anger, fear, sadness, and disgust), suggesting involvement of general positive and negative affect systems. These results suggest that incidental emotional cues exert a valence-specific influence of on decisions, which could shape risk-taking behavior in social situations.
