Full textThe most stable oscillators use a sapphire resonator placed at low temperature. This resonator is used in a passive configuration and the oscillation is maintained by an amplifier at room temperature. To reach ultimate stabilities, several controls must be implemented in order to mitigate the phase and amplitude drifts of the signal in the oscillation loop. Such an oscillator is thus cumbersome and difficult to implement in ground applications. The main objective of this thesis is to validate another principle of the use of sapphire resonator: the Whispering Gallery modes MASER Oscillator (Whigmo). The idea is to use paramagnetic impurities that are present within the sapphire crystal to obtain a self-sustained MASER effect. The Whigmo principle has been demonstrated by using HEMEX sapphire resonators, containing paramagnetic ions (Fe3+ ions). Its principle is based on the three energy levels MASER at zero dc magnetic field. By pumping the ions thanks to a whispering gallery (WG) mode at 31 GHz, an oscillation is obtained via another WG mode at 12. 04 GHz. The maximum power delivred is of about 6. 10. 9 W (ten thousand times higher than an H-Maser) for ionic concentration as Iow as 10 ppb. A model combining the WG modes and the behaviour of the ions within the sapphire matrix, allows to describe the Maser power evolution according to various parameters, such as temperature. . Couplings of the WG modes (at 12 GHz and 31 GHz) and the ionic concentration. Measurements on the MASER instability for a power of about 10-12 W, showed that this oscillator is limited only at short term the thermal noise. An instability lower than 10. 14 at short term has been shown through another experiment, by comparing the Whigmo to the state of the art Cryogenic Sapphire Oscillator (CSO). This work suggests that the MASER working at power of 6. 10. 9 W could deliver short-term instability of about 1. 10. 1611/2. The Whigmo is then an oscillator that combine the performances of the traditional CSO and an extreme simplicity. Ln the near future it will elsewhere become the successor of the traditional CSO

Full textA critical analysis of the thermal rating of power cables in tunnels is carried out, with the study of factors of influence specific to cable laying constrains. The heat generation in the cables, due to the transiting current, is dissipated by an axial turbulent forced convection and by radiation with the tunnel walls. To characterize this cooling, an experimental mock-up tunnel has been designed, modelling various cables in a fully-developed turbulent flow. The results are compared and bolstered by 3D numerical simulations, developed under the OpenFOAM code. The studies have highlighted an important underestimation of the convective exchange by the existing standard. Their cooling law is actually a sum of the effects of racks supporting the cables, for a third, and the effect of a flow still underdeveloped for another third. The last third being the actual cooling of the cables. The impact of groups configurations is also studied, with an astonishing result for groups of two cables, which are better cooled than a single cable case, when installed close to a wall. Following the analysis, a single conservative cooling law is proposed to model all studied cases. This law has a significant impact on the permissible current in the cables, which is downgraded from 5% to 9% from previous ratings

Full textThis study proposes to clarify the contribution of France during the first stage of development of the Imperial Gallery of Paintings, which gave birth to the State Hermitage Museum, in Saint Petersburg. It is during this period that the gallery of the Russian sovereigns, within a new palatial complex, is gathered, organized and housed immediately just next to the Winter Palace – the seat of power – in an establishment which is quickly given the – French – name, “Hermitage.”This study is divided in three parts. First, the study will present the contribution of France under Catherine the Great (1729-1762-1796), by examining both the construction of the Hermitage’s building and the formation of the collections. Secondly, we will delve into the reigns of Paul I (1754-1796-1801) and especially his son, Alexander the Great (1777-1801-1825), in order to determine how they managed this inheritance, by highlighting how these sovereigns used the ideas and artworks from France. Finally, the study will establish, how, at the end of this first stage of the evolution of the Hermitage, France stimulated the transformation of the Imperial Gallery into an institution whose trajectory arced towards becoming a museum

Full textThis thesis puts forward a new hypothesis concerning the enigma of the décor of the Francis I Gallery in the royal palace of Fontainebleau, tests whether this hypothesis works for all 16 of its original units, frames included, and considers the question of its likelihood. It is based on an analysis of the unit removed from the western end of the gallery in 1639, Rosso Fiorentino’s Bacchus, Venus and Cupid, now hanging in the MNHA in Luxembourg. This painting is a unicum that falls into the mirabilia category. Behind the erotic scene lies a sophisticated depiction of a recent - here shortened - adage of Erasmus: without Bacchus, Venus grows cold. Using the art of memory, it also “memorises” the paradigm of the heavenly monarchy portrayed in Jean Thenaud’s Treschrestienne Cabale metrifiee (1519) and commented on in his Traicte de la Cabale (1521), two manuscripts commissioned by Francis I. The three motifs at the bottom of the work indicate its discursive modus operandi, drawing on Erasmus, then De Cues, then Bonaventure. It is a painting constructed like the radiant images of Marsilio Ficino’s De triplici vita, but without magical effect. This painting is at the centre of a simultaneously intellectual, material and practical device, linking the 16 original units and inviting a specific reception from the Valois-Angoulême princes so that they can themselves express the organised discursive programme. The intellectual basis of this device is theological in nature: it is founded on the verse of Saint Paul (1 Corinthians 13:12), and refers to Erasmus, De Cues and Bonaventure. It is unique in that it transposes the mental concepts of these Christian thinkers to a painted, stuccoed décor, following the serio ludere maxim, very popular at the time, in terms of formal inventions and original use of images to generate the programme’s rhetoric. The most remarkable of these inventions is the plastic practice of the art of memory, following its classic rules, in all the units, including the frames. The programme exposes the truth of the power of the very-Christian monarchy, via three analogies to the power of the heavenly Monarchy. It defines princely values, as well as two major political ambitions, absolute power and access to the imperium mundi using new arguments. It forms the secrete “mirror for the prince” of the new Valois-Angoulême dynasty. This “mirror” also cites the “theatre” of Giulio Camillo bought by the King in 1530 and illuminates its enigmatic function. We propose Jean Thenaud, supported by Rosso, as the creators

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to quantify the hazard of rock fall on a rock-shed structure, and thus able to integrate this structure into a system of detection and warning. For this type of problem, the inverse methods may allow a characterization (identification and location) of the effort sustained by the structure. These methods are widely used for structures like beams and plates under dynamic loads unknown. To resolve this problem, one of the most used approaches is to create transfer functions between impact point and measuring point on the structure experimentally or numerically, measure responses, and find the force history by deconvolution of the signal. It is known that this type of problem is "ill posed". To obtain a stable solution with physical sense, it must generally be used to stabilize either by filtering noise, or by conventional methods of regularization, such as that of Tikhonov. The problem of characterization of impacts on a structure becomes more complex when the impact location is unknown. To resolve this problem, we can use an approach based on the minimization of an objective function representing the error between measured and estimated responses at several points forming a grid on the structure. In the case of a real structure with complex boundary conditions, it is preferable to opt for an experimental approach. A series of tests on simple structures like beams and plates can control the parameters affecting the quality of the force location and identification. To recreate the characteristics of the structure and behavior, an application of the approach on reinforced concrete slab is most appropriate. By using transfer functions obtained experimentally and validated numerically, the location and identification of force history becomes possible. This study opens perspectives to extend the application of inverse methods to characterize the efforts of such breath generated by a flood or an explosion

Full textThis work deals with the study and the realization of Whispering gallery mode quartz resonators in the K-band (20 - 40 GHz). We evaluated experimentally the quartz dielectric properties (permittivity and intrinsic losses) using the Courtney resonator method. These measurements show that the variation of quartz permittivity with temperature is small and then the thermal sensitivity of the resonator is principaly due to thermal dilatation. The quartz loss tangent at low temperature changed very little from their room temperature value at 300K. Thus the cooling of the quartz brings only a weak profit in terms of the quality factor. We also achieved some Whispering Gallery mode quartz resonators working at different resonant frequencies. Experimental quality factors Q around 60 000 at 300K and of 130 000 at 77K have been obtaind at 16 GHz. Moreover, a Q-factor around 30 000 at 300K has been obtained at 26 GHz. A theoretical model, based on a Mode Matching method has been developed at LPMO in order to evaluate with a good precision the resonant frequencies of our resonators. Moreover, the efficiency of the mode selection method has been experimentally demonstrated. The 26 GHz resonator was used in order to design an oscillator. The achieved oscillator presents very good phase noise performances at 300K. These performances can be still improved by optimizing the circuit of oscillation and/or by using an interferometric corrector
