Full text
Abstract:
The AdS/CFT correspondence provides a microscopic description of black hole thermodynamics. In this thesis, I study the relation between the classical physics of black holes and this microscopic description. I first consider the gauge theory's holographic encoding of non-trivial global causal structure, by studying various probes of the black hole. I study the charged black hole, so that the thermal scale is separated from the horizon scale, to demonstrate which relates to the field theory scale size. I find that, when probing the horizon, both Wilson loops and the duals of static supergavity probes have a scale size determined by the horizon, but the field theory scale size is divergent for a time-dependent probe. I also use the bulk black hole geometry to study the physics of the boundary theory. If we consider a dynamical boundary, a braneworld cosmology is induced from the bulk. However, the presence of matter on the brane introduces unconventional quadratic terms in the FRW equations of this braneworld. I find that bulk black holes induce identical unconventional terms on a matterless brane, therefore providing an alternative description of the same cosmology. A new conjecture relating classical and thermodynamic stability of black branes has emerged from the AdS/CFT correspondence. I make progress in proving this for the case of Schwarzschild black holes in a finite cavity. I also extend the conjecture to the supergravity backgrounds of the direct product form Schwarzschild-AdS x Sphere, which are relevant to my study of the AdS/CFT correspondence.

Chandrakar, Shant. "Memory Architecture Template for Fast Block Matching Algorithms on Field Programmable Gate Arrays." DigitalCommons@USU, 2009. https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/etd/495.

Full text
Abstract:
Fast Block Matching (FBM) algorithms for video compression are well suited for acceleration using parallel data-path architectures on Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). However, designing an efficient on-chip memory subsystem to provide the required throughput to this parallel data-path architecture is a complex problem. This thesis presents a memory architecture template that can be parameterized for a given FBM algorithm, number of parallel Processing Elements (PEs), and block size. The template can be parameterized with well known exploration techniques to design efficient on-chip memory subsystems. The memory subsystems are derived for two existing FBM algorithms and are implemented on a Xilinx Virtex 4 family of FPGAs. Results show that the derived memory subsystem in the best case supports up to 27 more parallel PEs than the three existing subsystems and processes integer pixels in a 1080p video sequence up to a rate of 73 frames per second. The speculative execution of an FBM algorithm for the same number of PEs increases the number of frames processed per second by 49%.

In this dissertation black hole singularities are studied using the AdS/CFT correspondence. These singularities show up in the CFT in the behavior of finite-temperature correlation functions. A direct relation is established between space-like geodesics in the bulk and momentum space Wightman functions of CFT operators of large dimensions. This allows to probe the regions inside the horizon and near the singularity using the CFT. Information about the black hole singularity is encoded in the exponential falloff of finite-temperature correlators at large imaginary frequency. We also find a UV/UV connection that governs physics inside the horizon. For the case the bulk theory lives in 5 dimensions the dual theory is an SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere, a bounded many-body system. The signatures of the singularity we found are only present as N -+ oo. To elucidate the emergence of the singularity in the gauge theory we further study the large N limit. We argue that in the high temperature phase the theory is intrinsically non-perturbative in the large N limit. At any nonzero value of the 't Hooft coupling A, an exponentially large (in N2) number of free theory states of wide energy range (or order N) mix under the interaction. As a result the planar perturbation theory breaks down. We argue that an arrow of time emerges in the gauge theory and the dual string configuration should be interpreted as a stringy black hole.

Abstract:
As games and the technologies used by them have become more advanced, the cost of producing games have increased. Today, the latest AAA titles are the results of hundreds or as many as thousands of people working full-time for years, and even developing a prototype requires a large investment. This project sets out to reduce that cost by looking at how reusable building blocks can be used in the prototyping process. During the project, seven interviews with game designers were conducted. The interviews found that building character controllers for the player was the most common activity and one of the more difficult tasks when prototyping a new game. As a result, a tool for creating character controllers was made. The tool builds the character controllers to work as state machines where actions in a state and transitions between states are editable through a visual programming language. The visual programming language uses nodes. These nodes work as reusable building blocks. The tool was evaluated by six game designers and four programmers who all thought the tool used a good approach for building and prototyping character controllers. The evaluation also showed that the building blocks, in the form of nodes in the tool, should be functionally small and general, like nodes for applying forces and accessing character data.

Abstract:
This research takes place in the context of Private Mobile Radio networks evolution which aims at designing a new LTE based PMR technology dedicated to public security services. As the frequency bands dedicated to this service is scarce and the need of public safety forces is different, we have revisited the Resource Allocation problem in this thesis with two main objectives: designing new allocation algorithms which outperform the spectrum efficiency and serving fairly the users instead of maximizing the global network throughput. This thesis proposes new Resource Block (RB) allocation strategies in LTE downlink systems. Instead of the well-known resource allocation algorithms, which work on the condition that the RB capacity is already estimated, our RB allocation schemes can improve the potential of the channel capacity, using Beamforming cooperation and game-theoretical problems1. With the MIMO (Multiple-Input-Multiple-output) antennas, the Beamforming technique improves the received signal in order to increase the SINR (Signal-to-Interference-plus-Noise-Ratio), but the improved signal may also influence the inter-cell interference in the neighbouring cells. As inter-cell interference is the main interference in the OFDMA system, a smart scheduling can choose UEs (User Equipment) in adjacent cells to control interference increment caused by Beamforming. In traditional methods, the scheduler allocates RBs to UEs depending on the RB capacities and other parameters, the system then applies the Beamforming technique to these chosen UEs. After the Beamforming, the RB capacity varies but the scheduler keeps the same allocation. Our scheme allocates the RBs and chooses Beamforming vectors at the same time to enhance the performance of the Beamforming technique. It increases the average throughput by increasing the RB’s average capacity. Because more parameters are taken into account, the complexity also increases exponentially. In the thesis we find an iterative method to reduce the complexity. From the simulations, our iterative method also has good performance and improves more than 10% of throughput on the cell edge.2. In contrast to the performance first algorithms, game theoretic allocation schemes maximize the UEs’ utility function from the economical point of view. The NBS (Nash Bargaining Solution) offers a Pareto optimal solution for the utility function. The traditional NBS allocation in an OFDMA system is to optimize the subcarrier allocation at each time slot, but in the OFDMA system, the subcarriers are composed of Resource Blocks (RB) in time series. We propose an RB NBS approach, which is more efficient than the existing subcarrier NBS allocation scheme. We analyze the fast-fading channels and compare them without the path-loss influence. Because of the great path-loss in cell edge, the edge UE always has lower RB capacity than the cell center UE. Our idea is to bring in a compensating factor to overcome this path-loss influence, and the compensating factors are carefully chosen to maximize the NBS function. However, the computation of these factors has a high complexity and we develop four approximated solutions which give same performance and accuracy. The performance evaluation confirms that our method and its approximated solutions are able to spread resources fairly over the entire cell

There are scientists who believe that the media are creating human’s identity, therefore we need to be critical to the images we see. According to Gillian Rose we must view the cover pictures carefully with several criteria to take into consideration. The purpose with this study is to analyze Elle, Plaza Kvinna, GQ and King’s covers to see if men and women are portrayed differently depending on who’s looking. With the help of semiotic and rhetorical tools I saw a difference to how the genders were portrayed. The theoretical position I have taken is gender theory by Yvonne Hirdman, the theory Erwing Goffman presents in his work Media Advertisement where he talks about the decoding of a picture and Laura Mulveys concept of” the male gaze”. In the material, I saw that a different was made between male and females. The magazines that had a male audience portrayed both men and woman on their covers. And the magazines that has a female audience portrayed woman only. Of the four- fashion magazine three of them focused on the credibility of the model instead of letting the fashion speak.

Abstract:
In recent years there has been significant research in the field of computational neuroscience and many of these biologically inspired cognitive models are based on the theory of operation of mammalian visual cortex. One such model of neocortex developed by George & Hawkins, known as Hierarchical Temporal Memories (HTM), is considered for the research discussed here. We propose a simple hierarchical model that is derived from HTM. The aim of this work is to evaluate the hardware cost and performance against software based simulations. This work presents a detailed hardware implementation and analysis of the derived hierarchical model. We show that these networks are inherently parallel in their architecture, similar to the biological computing, and that parallelism can be exploited by massively parallel architectures implemented using reconfigurable devices such as the FPGA. Hardware implementation accelerates the learning process which is useful in many real world problems. We have implemented a complex network node that operates in real time using an FPGA. The current architecture is modular and allows us to estimate the hardware resources and computational units required to realize large scale networks in the future.

Ernest “Dutch” Morial’s 1977 grassroots mayoral campaign disrupted the political status quo in New Orleans with his message of citizen participation. Morial’s citizen-driven campaign reached over the constituencies of established Black Political Organizations, capturing an eager audience with his message of political, social, and economic equality. With the help of volunteers and other community organizations, Morial created a grassroots campaign that focused on making city government more inclusive. Unattached to the traditional patronage structure, Mayor Morial empowered the black community, reducing the constraints of their political access. Although his legacy is difficult to discern in New Orleans current political realities, Morial’s first campaign and administrations represent a departure from the political status-quo and the powerful patronage structures critical to their status.

Context. People in recent times are getting engaged more often in playing video games. Few play for enjoyment, few play for stress relaxation and so on. Generally, the degree of involvement of a player with the game is described as game immersion. People when immersed into playing a game doesn't realize that they are getting dissociated with the outside world and are losing track of time. Objectives. In this research, the main objective is to explore the relationship between the game immersion and game experience using the five factors of game immersion. In addition, the study also involves exploring different methods that can be used to measure game immersion. Methods. In this research, initially literature review has been conducted to explore the meaning of game immersion and also different methods that can be used to measure it and next user studies in the form an experiment was conducted to measure game immersion. After the experiment was conducted regression analysis was performed on the data obtained from the results to describe the relation between game immersion and game experience. Results. After the experiment participants were asked to answer the IEQ questionnaire and the answers obtained from the questionnaire are analyzed using regression analysis. An inverse linear regression was observed between game immersion and game experience. Conclusions. After analyzing the data, from the observed inverse linear regression, it is concluded that game immersion levels decrease with the increase in the game experience.

Abstract:
Few studies have attempted to investigate carnivore dynamics in the privatised agricultural sector of South Africa. As such, the effect of lethal predator management on carnivore populations in private game-farms remains unclear. The black-backed jackal (Canis mesomelas) is one of a number of species that has historically been perceived as a threat to economic security and has frequently been targeted as a pest species. Despite efforts to reduce or remove C. mesomelas from livestock producing areas, recent land owner questionnaires and faecal density surveys report this species as prevalent. The mechanism by which this species persists under such circumstances is currently under debate, and remains a significant question that restricts the sustainable management of this species.

Full text
Abstract:
The Black Gate cemetery in Newcastle-upon-Tyne was established within the abandoned remains of a Roman fort (Pons Aelius) in the 8th century and was an active burial ground until the 12th century AD. The cemetery has yielded 663 articulated skeletons, making it one of the largest skeletal assemblages recovered from later Anglo-Saxon England. Aside from the cemetery there is no physical evidence for settlement in the area from the abandonment of Pons Aelius in 410 AD. until the first phase of construction of a Norman castle in 1080 AD. Documentary evidence indicates the presence of a monastery within the immediate locality of the cemetery; however, archaeological evidence for a monastic settlement at the site has yet to be identified. Consequently, the origin of the contributory population is uncertain. To determine the nature and origin of the Black Gate cemetery population a bio-cultural investigation was undertaken. Investigation into the relationship between health and the different demographic and social components of the assemblage, determined from burial form and variation, enabled a picture of the overall social and environmental impact on levels of physiological stress to be assessed. Indicators of stress were compared with thirteen sites of known context to determine if the health profile observed amongst the Black Gate population shared characteristics with urban, rural or monastic assemblages. A detailed picture of the health and funerary behaviour of the Black Gate cemetery was attained. However, the origin of this population remains inconclusive. This research emphasises the multi-factorial nature of physiological stress and that age, diet, cultural practices and status had a greater impact upon the skeleton than settlement type in the later Anglo-Saxon period.

In this thesis we explore some aspects of strongly coupled field theories using the respective gravitational duals. We start studying gravitational perturbations of rotating black strings in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter (AdS) four-dimensional spacetime. A complete analysis of the spectrum of the quasinormal modes (QNMs) is presented, interpretations in the dual field theory, when possible, are explored. In the scalar sector of the perturbations we obtain the dispersion relations in the hydrodynamic approximation following three approaches: gravitational perturbations, hydrodynamic fluctuations of a relativistic fluid in (2+1) dimensions and an analysis of relativistic wave vectors. The results obtained in the hydrodynamic limit show relativistic effects like Lorentz contraction, damping time dilation and Doppler shift of the frequency. The numerical results also show a crossover from the hydrodynamicto- relativistic regimes and from the non-hydrodynamic-to-relativistic regimes, the last for the first non-hydrodynamic quasinormal mode (QNM). Additionally we report the emergence of a new class of QNMs. In the second part we explore phenomenological models for quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Firstly we explore a holographic model for vector mesons in the context of the softwall model. We explore the melting of these quasiparticle states when the temperature is added via a black hole on the gravitational background. We also calculate the quasinormal modes and the dispersion relations in this model. We follow a similar procedure to explore the melting of scalar mesons. The difference in relation to the vector mesons case is that a quartic dilaton in the ultraviolet (UV) regime can be introduced to describe the gluon condensate, while the linear behaviour of the mass spectrum and confinement is guaranteed by a quadratic dilaton field infrared (IR) regime. We explore the effects of the energy scale associated with the gluon condensate in the mass spectrum and melting of the scalar mesons. In the last part we present a holographic model to describe the gluon sector of the Yang- Mills Lagrangian implemented through the coupling of the dilaton field to the metric. In this context we calculate the mass spectrum of the scalar and tensor sectors of the gluons field. The results obtained are consistent with lattice QCD. We also calculate the vacuum expectation value (VEV) and the energy density of the QCD vacuum, both results are reasonable compared with results currently available in the literature. At the end a new dictionary is proposed, which relates the trace anomaly of deformed conformal field theories (CFTs) to the trace anomaly of QCD. As a non trivial consequence of this dictionary we observe the emergence of a â function similar to the two loops result in perturbative QCD.

Abstract:
Game ranch owners are spoilt by the high prices overseas hunters are prepared to pay, and tend to forget that in the long term it is the local market that may ensure the survival of the game industry. More effort should therefore be put into marketing hunting opportunities for the local hunter. This research focused on analysing the typical building blocks of marketing strategy applicable to service organizations. This was done to determine and evaluate the building blocks of marketing strategy applicable to game ranches in the Eastern Cape Province who are targeting local biltong hunters. A literature review was conducted to determine the ideal building blocks of marketing strategy for service organizations such as game ranches. Thereafter, a survey was conducted by means of a questionnaire to determine the ranchers' perceptions of marketing and evaluate their marketing strategies. Most of the respondents: had a fair idea of what marketing entails; were unaware of the thread that links customer expectations, satisfaction and loyalty; realized the importance of relationship marketing with external markets, but not with internal markets; perceived direct competition as their biggest threat, while other travel opportunities were seen as the most important substitute for hunting; mainly positioned themselves based on the features the ranch offered, and believed that the standard of service delivery and physical features of the ranch (the nature of the offering) were their important competitive advantages. The study proposes that the framework of building blocks of marketing strategy, designed by the researcher be used as a tool with which marketing strategies for game ranches in the Eastern Cape Province targeting local biltong hunters could be developed. Additional research on topics such as advertising and the various market opportunity strategies of diversification and product development, could lead to improvement and modification of this framework, making it an even more powerful tool in developing marketing strategies.

Abstract:
The gauge / gravity duality, or holographic correspondence, is a theoretical tool that allows the description of strongly coupled field theory through a dual classical gravity theory. In this thesis, we advance the use of numerical methods in applications of the holographic correspondence to the study of strongly coupled field theories in three situations. Firstly, we study the relationship between chemical potential and charge density across myriad examples of Lorentz invariant 3+1 dimensional holographic field theories with the minimal structure of a conserved charge. Solving for the classical gravitational configurations dual to the field theories and extracting the charge density and chemical potential, we enumerate the relationships that can exist in a wide range of holographic theories. Secondly, we study the spontaneous formation of inhomogeneous (striped) order, a phenomenon that has been observed in the cuprates, in a 2+1 dimensional strongly coupled field theory. By numerically solving the equations of motion using finite difference techniques, we construct the full nonlinear striped black brane solutions that provide the gravity dual to this field theory. We evaluate the thermodynamics and show that the system undergoes a second order phase transition to the striped phase as the temperature is lowered. Finally, we apply the holographic correspondence to study particular aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD). First, we develop a phenomenological holographic model to describe the colour superconductivity phase of QCD, which is believed to exist at large quark density. We construct the phase diagram for our model, which includes confined, deconfined, and superconducting phases. In a separate project, we revisit the construction of the baryon in the Sakai-Sugimoto model of holographic QCD. In this model, gauge field configurations on the probe D8 flavour branes with non-trivial topological charge (instantons) correspond to baryons in the dual field theory. In order to extend previous studies, we relax an assumption of spherical symmetry and, utilizing pseudospectral methods, numerically construct the deformed instanton in the bulk. Compared to previous studies, we find significantly more realistic values for the mass and size of the baryon.

Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the properties of strongly-coupled large-N conformal field theories (CFT’s) using AdS/CFT correspondence. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction. In Chapter 2 we study the shear viscosity of strongly-coupled large-N conformal field theories. We find that it is affected by \(R^2\) corrections to the AdS action and present an example of 4D theory in which the the conjectured universal lower bound on viscosity-to-entropy ratio \(\eta/s > 1/4 \pi\) is violated by 1/N corrections. This fact proves that there is no universal lower bound of \(1/4 \pi\) on viscosity-to-entropy ratio and may be relevant for the studies of QCD quark-gluon plasma for which this ratio is experimentally found to be close to \(1/4 \pi\). In Chapter 3 we study the formation of the electron star in 4D AdS space. We show that in a gravity theory with charged fermions a layer of charged fermion fluid may form at a finite distance from the charged black hole. We show that these “electron stars” are candidate gravity duals for strongly interacting fermion systems at finite density and finite temperature. Entropy density for such systems scales as \(s \sim T^{2/z}\) at low temperatures as expected from IR criticality of electron stars solutions.

Abstract:
Prior research has established a relationship between playing video games containing stereotyped representations of traditionally marginalized groups and resulting negative attitudes towards those groups. Yet, very little work has examined video games containing more positive, non-stereotyped representations and whether these diverse casts have inverse effects resulting in positive attitudes following exposure, an effect demonstrated in television media. The current study makes use of two paradigms, one based on short-term priming theory concerning immediate exposure to media, and one on long-term cultivation theory dealing with the overall media diet, and the relation to attitudes towards Blacks including symbolic racism, colorblindness, and implicit bias. In Study 1 (n = 31), Black and White participants reported how much time weekly they spent playing a popular game with positive representations of People of Color before completing measures. In Study 2 (n = 91), Black and White participants were exposed to one of three games, one with positive representation, one with negative representation, and a control game before completing study measures. Findings suggested that participant race was related to pro-Black attitudes (p = .009), but that direct exposure to a game with positive representation (p = .13) as well as playing the game during the week (p = .25) was not, while controlling for participant interracial contract. Despite this, discussions are made in face of interesting patterns of results that could be expanded upon in future work to explain the present findings. Furthermore, practical applications of the present study are made for both non-academic creators and consumers of video games.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis adresses the setup and characterization of PTB´s double-ended interferometer, which allows for absolute length measurement of prismatic bodies without the need for wringing to a platen, which prevents deformation caused by their interaction. In comparison with PTB´s prototype, the measurement uncertainty has been substantially reduced due to an improved temperature measurement system, a temperature stabilized vacuum chamber, optics of better flatness and cameras with higher resolution. Further reduction of the measurement uncertainty has been achieved by the developed adjustment procedure including an autocollimation scanning and a correction of the influence of wavefront aberrations. Multiple configurations of orientation of the beamsplitter plate wedges were tested to minimize the influence of parasitic interferences. Comparison measurements against single-ended interferometers on a steel and a filter glas gauge block resulted in deviations of the measured length in the range of 0.4 to 2.6 nm, which is in good agreement with measurement uncertainties. This proves the capability of absolute length measurement of the double-ended interferometer. Comparison measurements on silicon gauge blocks resulted in significantly shorter lengths than those measured in single-ended interferometers with a reproducible length difference of 4 nm for the different used wavelengths of 532 and 633nm. Those effects are presumably based on material and surface characteristics which seem to have a much stronger impact on the measured length when the sample is not wrung to a platen. Due to the large contribution of the roughness and the phase change on reflection to the measurement uncertainty, the full potential of the double ended interferometer will unfold for measurements on lengths changes, like measurement of the thermal expansion or long term stability of different materials, for which the influence of the roughness and phase change on reflection can be neglected.

Abstract:
Thesis (MNutr (Interdisciplinary Health Sciences. Human Nutrition))--University of Stellenbosch, 2006.
INTRODUCTION: The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of certain known risk factors for intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR) in women who gave premature birth to growth-restricted infants at a large regional hospital (Kalafong) in the Gauteng province of South Africa and to investigate the possible associations between the presence of various risk factors and the severity of growth restriction found in these infants. METHOD: The study was designed as cross-sectional, descriptive and observational. The subjects included singleton growth-restricted premature infants (n=80), without congenital abnormalities and their mothers (n=80). Anthropometric data [weight, height, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and triceps skinfold thickness (TSF)] were collected from these mothers three to four days post-partum. Infant birth weights were recorded at birth, while the lengths and head circumferences were recorded within 2 days post-partum. Additional information, such as birth spacing, maternal age, smoking habits and alcohol use, was collected by personal interview and blood pressure data and HIV status was obtained from medical records. Data capturing and descriptive statistics were done using Microsoft Excel and comparative analytical statistics were performed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), version 12.0. RESULTS: The study demonstrated a high prevalence (69%) of infants born with a birth weight <3rd percentile. In the sample, 81% of the mothers were aged 17-34 years and most (93%) had their children 18 months or longer apart. Malnutrition prevalence was moderate. In 58% of the mothers the BMI was normal (18.5-24.9 kg/m2) and in 47% the upper arm muscle area (UAMA) was between the 10th-85th percentile. Grade III overweight occurred in 3% and TSF ≤5th percentile occurred in 35% of the mothers. About half (51%) of the mothers in the sample population had hypertension during the second trimester of pregnancy. Smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy was rare (1% and 6% respectively) and the prevalence of HIV infection in the mothers was 26%. The prevalence (16%) of Grade II overweight among the mothers of symmetric growth-restricted (SGR) infants was higher than among the mothers of asymmetric growth-restricted (AGR) infants (7%). Of the hypertensive mothers, 55% had infants with SGR compared to 45% with AGR (p=0.47). Although rare, smoking occurred only in mothers with AGR infants (3%). No significant differences were found between the smoking and non-smoking group (p=0.21). Although the use of alcohol was more prevalent at 6% in mothers with SGA infants and 7% in mothers with AGR infants, no significant associations were found (p=0.95). Although not significant (p=0.76), there was a higher prevalence of HIV infection in mothers with SGR infants at 29%, compared to 23% of mothers of AGR infants. CONCLUSION: Although further studies are needed before intervention strategies can be planned and implemented, the findings of this study suggest that apart from the usual factors (maternal age and nutritional status, smoking and alcohol use during pregnancy and birth spacing) that may influence intra-uterine growth, hypertension may contribute greatly to IUGR in this study population.

Abstract:
In the development of digitally connected solutions that require the use of personal data, the issue of data privacy is an important factor that must be taken into account. Simply informing users about how data is used and getting their consent with a simple click is not enough to create awareness of the issue of data privacy and let them make a conscious decision about the use of their personal data. Furthermore, there is a big gap in knowledge about what personal data is and what is considered sensitive data. Especially the knowledge about what biometric identifiers that they are used in a variety of everyday life applications and in which sense the handling can be problematic is unknown. This thesis project explores how the use of critical play in form of an activist game can create awareness of the issue of data privacy, inform about the value of biometric data and foster self-reflection of handling one’s own personal data. Through the simulation of dependencies between personal data, the motivation to share them and the aggregation of personal data in combination with real and prospective use cases, players are empowered to reflect on their behaviour and to critically deal with the topic of data privacy.

Abstract:
Turn-final gaze at the interlocutor has been suggested to fill different functions in conversation: being monitoring, regulatory or response-seeking. 16 Swedish toddlers use of turn-final gaze in dyadic interaction with their parents was investigated at the ages 1;0, 1;6, 2;0, 2;6 and 3;0. The turn-final gaze behaviour was investigated for correlations to child age and language level. Additionally, child turn-final gaze in turn-final questions, in turns longer than 5 seconds and in different interaction contexts was examined. Results showed that the use of active turn final gaze increased over ages 1;0-2;0. No correlations between child use of turn-final gaze and child language level could be found. In turn-final questions, 93% of the turn-final gaze was active, i.e. was not present at the start of the turn. Turn-final gaze was used both during conversation and object-oriented interaction at all ages.A monitoring-response-seeking function of turn-final gaze was proposed to be used by the toddlers as a means to get the parent’s encouragement and approval of the child’s interactive language use. Additionally, the importance of choosing a suitable measure type of turn-final gaze while investigating small children was stressed.

"New Applications of the Gauge/Gravity Duality." Doctoral thesis, Universitat de Barcelona, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/119603.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to put forth and present a series of new applications of the gauge/string duality to areas of high energy physics and condensed matter physics. The contributions showcased in this thesis amount to the ever growing recollection of evidence that supports the duality, which has already become a broad and extensive field of its own. Most of the work contained in this thesis addresses the study of the quark gluon plasma, a state of matter that might allow to be approximated by simple gravitational descriptions and is, at the same time, accessible by experiment. This constitutes a great advantage, since it gives the possibility of testing the qualitative predictions that can be derived from the calculations in holography, like the ones presented in this thesis. One of them is that a heavy quark moving suficiently fast through a quark-gluon plasma may lose energy by Cherenkov-radiating mesons. Special emphasis is given to the fact that this effect takes place in all strongly coupled, large-Nc plasmas with a gravity dual. Phenomenological implications for heavy-ion collision experiments are also discussed. On the other hand, an extensive use is made of a IIB supergravity solution dual to a spatially anisotropic finite-temperature N = 4 super Yang-Mills plasma. Motivation comes from the fact that the quark gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions is anisotropic. The analysis focuses on three important observables of the plasma: Firstly, the drag force experienced by a massive quark propagating through the plasma is considered. The results show a generic misalignment of the gluon cloud trailing behind the quark, the quark velocity and the drag force itself whenever anisotropy is taken into account. Secondly, a study of the jet quenching parameter of the plasma is presented for arbitrary orientations and arbitrary values of the anisotropy. Perhaps surprisingly, the anisotropic value can be larger or smaller than the isotropic one, and moreover, this depends on whether the comparison is made at equal temperatures or at equal entropy densities. Finally, the screening length for quarkonium mesons in the anisotropic plasma is computed. The most important result is that not only can the temperature cause the dissociation of mesons, but anisotropy itself, even at zero temperature, may be responsible for it. Lastly, the duality is applied to the holographic description of anisotropic p-wave super- fluids, and a gravitational model is used to perform a complete analysis of their transport phenomena in the superfluid phase. The thermoelectric, piezoelectric and exoelectric effects are thoroughly studied. The results reproduce characteristic features of both superfluids and superconductors. In particular, the viscosities of the fluid deviate from the universal value, as is expected in an anisotropic condensed phase. An additional viscosity coeficient, associated to the difference in normal stresses and not previously considered in the holographic context, is also computed.

Abstract:
In a preamble, a quick summary of the line of thought from Noether's theorems to modern views on conserved charges in gauge theories is attempted. Most of the background material needed for the thesis is set out through a small survey of the literature. Emphasis is put on the concepts more than on the formalism, which is relegated to the appendices.

The treatment of exact conservation laws in Lagrangian gauge theories constitutes the main axis of the first part of the thesis. The formalism is developed as a self-consistent theory but is inspired by earlier works, mainly by cohomological results, covariant phase space methods and by the Hamiltonian formalism.

The thermodynamical properties of black holes, especially the first law, are studied in a general geometrical setting and are worked out for several black objects: black holes, strings and rings. Also, the geometrical and thermodynamical properties of a new family of black holes with closed timelike curves in three dimensions are described.

The second part of the thesis is the natural generalization of the first part to asymptotic analyses. We start with a general construction of covariant phase spaces admitting asymptotically conserved charges. The representation of the asymptotic symmetry algebra by a covariant Poisson bracket among the conserved charges is then defined and is shown to admit generically central extensions. The asymptotic structures of three three-dimensional spacetimes are then studied in detail and the consequences for quantum gravity in three dimensions are discussed.

Abstract:
The human gaze is pivotal in motion planning and control. Gaze is typically directed at visual target sites prior to physical interactions with them. This proactive gaze (PEG) behavior has been observed in a multitude of physical situations. However, PEG has not been examined in virtual reality (VR). Identification of PEG in VR could be helpful for digital human modeling applications and human-robot interactions. In this study we asked 10 participants to perform a pick-and-place (PAP) task in VR while we were tracking gaze behavior. Our results indicate that PEG also occurs in VR. Furthermore, the action to reach directly towards the PAP object or walk to it before reaching, results in different gaze strategies. Relocating before a reach is associated with gaze to additional sites, such as the floor and the table upon which the object was placed.

"Biology and management affecting the decline of a black rhinoceros, Diceros bicornis minor (Linnaeus, 1758), population in Ndumo Game Reserve, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31147.

Abstract:
Black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) are classified as critically endangered on the IUCN red data list (IUCN 2010). In Ndumo Game Reserve in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, a black rhino population has seen a decline in numbers from nearly 50 rhino in 1988 to only eight in 2006. This study aimed to determine the factors or events responsible for the decline in black rhino numbers in Ndumo. The first part of this study focuses on the historical data and literature on Ndumo’s black rhino population. Specifically, I examined historical data regarding Ndumo’s black rhino population estimates, recruitment patterns, mortality rates, number of removals, introductions, densities and other large herbivore population estimates. Results suggest that a combination of high removals due to inaccurate estimates and competition from other herbivore populations, specifically nyala (Nyala angasi) and impala (Aepyceros melampus), played a role in this population’s decline. Also, a change in the Usuthu River course negatively affected the population’s social structure, movement patterns and recruitment success. The introduction of five black rhino from Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in 2008 seems to have been a success, and should increase reproductive success. Secondly, we determined the amount of browse currently (2008) available to black rhino in Ndumo, the proportional species composition of this browse and its suitability for black rhino. The results show that browse availability is fairly high (average of 17.8%) in Ndumo but the suitability is low. Croton menyhartii is the single biggest contributor to browse availability in Ndumo, contributing 25% of all available browse. This plant species is unfortunately rejected by black rhino and most other browsers. Furthermore, two invasive alien plant species (Chromolaena odorata and Lantana camara) are amongst the four most abundant plant species in Ndumo and are also rejected by black rhino. An effective alien plant clearing programme is needed to eradicate invasive alien species in Ndumo, which will help alleviate the poor browse conditions. A population viability analysis (PVA) was done during the last part of the study to predict the possibility of extinction or survival of this black rhino population in future. The VORTEX model was used in this study. Data and trends as actually observed in Ndumo since 1988 was used as the first simulation’s input parameters, to test whether the model will predict a similar decline in black rhino numbers as observed in Ndumo. Furthermore, sensitivity analyses with different input parameters were done to test the probability of extinction or survival under all possible circumstances. The model predicted a high probability of survival, even with most of the sensitivity analyses, suggesting that small populations of less than 50 individuals are viable if managed correctly. Parameters that impacted negatively on the growth rate of this population were density dependant breeding, a low recruitment rate and a decline in carrying capacity.

Abstract:
During this thesis, we have used superconducting circuits with Josephson junctions, derived from the Cooper pair box, in order to implement quantum bits (qubits).
To implement two-qubit gates, we have developed a new circuit, the quantroswap, which consists in two capacitively coupled Cooper pair box, each of them being manipulated and read separately. We have demonstrated coherent exchange of energy between them, but we have also observed a problem of qubit instability.
In order to avoid this spurious effect, we have implemented another circuit based on a charge insensitive split Cooper pair box coupled to a non-linear resonator for readout-out purpose. We have measured large coherence time, and obtained large readout fidelity (90%) using the bifurcation phenomenon.
For metrological purpose, microwave reflectometry measurement on a quantronium also allowed us to relate an applied current I to the frequency f=I/2e of induced Bloch oscillations.
