Abstract:
Powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe polygoni DC is one of the major constraints in the production of black gram, which lead to a potential decrease in yield (40-90%). In order to know the severity of black gram powdery mildew, the roving survey was carried out to know the severity of the disease in five districts of northern Karnataka viz., Belgaum, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri and Uttara Kannada districts during Kharif and Rabi season of 2012-13. Maximum mean per cent disease severity (PDI) was observed in Belgaum district (68.72%) followed by Dharwad district (59.73%), Haveri district (52.10%) and Uttara Kannada district (44.59%). Whereas, minimum per cent disease severity (PDI) was noticed in Gadag district (20.23%).

Abstract:
Roving survey was conducted in major carrot growing districts of Karnataka, India during rabi/summer 2021-22 to record the incidence of different insect pests and their natural enemies in carrot at the pre-rooting stage and rooting stage. Observations were made from the three randomly selected spots in each field and from each spot, five plants were observed for incidence by looking at the symptoms inflicted by the different insect pests. Data on damage by agromyzid fly was registered by adopting destructive sampling method. Among the three districts surveyed, the highest mean % infestation of agromyzid fly during the pre-rooting stage was recorded in Gadag (22.40%) followed by Dharwad (19.63%) and Belagavi district (15.12%). During rooting stage, the highest mean % infestation of agromyzid fly was documented in Gadag (50.56%) followed by Belagavi district (48.09%) and Dharwad (46.56%). Gadag witnessed the highest % damage of the agromyzid fly during pre-rooting and rooting stages which might be due to year-round cultivation of carrot. Further, monocropping without crop rotation might have attributed to the highest incidence of insect pest of carrot. Sucking insect pests are of minor importance as compared to agromyzid fly, as it causes damage to edible taproot which is of economic importance in carrot cultivation.

Abstract:
In Gadag and Rajarshi (1987), we studied a bivariate (multitype) branching process based on infinite and finite lines of descent, of particles of a supercritical one-dimensional (multitype) Galton-Watson branching process (GWBP). In this paper, we discuss a few more meaningful and interesting univariate and multitype branching processes, based on exact progeny lengths of particles in a GWBP. Our constructions relax the assumption of supercriticality made in Gadag and Rajarshi (1987). We investigate some finite-time and asymptotic results of these processes in some details and relate them to the original process. These results are then used to propose new and better estimates of the offspring mean. An illustration based on the branching process of the white male population of the USA is also given. We believe that our work offers a rather finer understanding of the branching property.

Abstract:
The Rusty-spotted Cat Prionailurus rubiginosus is distributed across India, Sri Lanka, and Nepal, with India harbouring the larger part of its global population. During a rapid survey of three abandoned gold mines in Kappatagudda Wildlife Sanctuary in Gadag, Karnataka, India, we found a dead Rusty-spotted Cat in one of them. The identified individual was taken to Gadag Zoo to determine the cause of death. The gut contained a whole partly digested bat (Microchiroptera) of unidentified species. Our observations suggest that the elusive and little-known Rusty-spotted Cat contributes to this human-made subterranean habitat in various ways. The presence of the Rusty-spotted Cat, a ‘Near Threatened’ and Schedule-I species, in a human-made subterranean habitat demonstrates possible high conservation value of such abandoned subterranean systems and calls for additional research to explore underground ecosystems across the cat’s distribution range.

Abstract:
Ecologically susceptible zones (ESZs) are endowed with the distinct bio, geo, climatic, hydrological, and ecological integrity that sustain natural resources to support the livelihood of dependent populations. However, globalization and consequent anthropogenic activities have led to the erosion of the natural resource base and enhanced the levels of pollutants, triggering global environmental change, evident from changes in the climate. Alterations in the structure and the ecological integrity of ESZs may lead to permanent and irreparable loss of extant life forms or cause significant damage to the natural processes. This study analyses the spatiotemporal processes of ecosystems through insights into land-use dynamics and delineation of ESZs at a disaggregated level (5’ × 5’ grids or 9 km × 9 km). This is based on the grid-based NES (National environment survey) in Gadag district, Karnataka, India, for sustainable management of natural resources. The temporal land use (LU) analysis indicated a decline of 0.33% in the forest cover from 1989 to 2019, primarily due to mining, unauthorized conversion of natural forests to agriculture, commercial cultivation, etc. The built-up area was found to increase from 0.05% to 1.4% due to the expansion of linear corridors, infrastructure projects, and new layouts at the periphery of the town of Gadag. Spatial patterns of landscape dynamics through landscape metrics revealed an increase in the number of patches around Gadag, and Kappata Gudda of Shirahatti from 1989 to 2019, indicating fragmentation of forests with greater shape complexity. ESZ analysis at disaggregated levels (grids equivalent to one administrative unit—panchayat or local governance—with a cluster of villages for implementing biodiversity conservation measures as per the Biodiversity Act 2002, Government of India) indicated nine grids with higher ecological susceptibility (ESZ-1), 31 grids in ESZ-2 (high ecological susceptibility) with a potential to be ESZ-1, 13 grids were in ESZ-3 (moderate ecological susceptibility), and four grids in ESZ-4 (low ecological susceptibility). The implementation of the ESZ framework in decentralized governance would ensure sustainable development. The approach is tailored to take into account the agents of landscape dynamics and local ecosystem conditions to develop appropriate location-specific management strategies for fragile ecosystems. The systematic framework drafted in the current study would aid as a guiding tool for the sustainability of natural resources (water, medicine, food, etc.) by building a self-reliant and decentralized society and averting over-exploitation of natural resources.

Abstract:
"Agriculture is one of India's most important economic sectors, contributing to over half of the country's GDP. India's ability to produce a wide range of items is well-known around the world. Marketing of the self-grown agricultural produces by the farmers is considered a most tedious task with the presence of middlemen (Bhagawan). Competitors, Unavailability of nearby markets and improper are the major circumstances in marketing. Production, grading, transportation, pricing, transmitting information from the production area to the market and from the market to the production area, and finished items are part of the marketing cycle. The agricultural marketing process includes the manufacture of goods and commodities, as well as transportation to and from the consumer. The objective of this study was to gather data on the challenges and potential of mango production and marketing. As a result, it has been identified as a source of significant and essential information on mango production trends and their marketing challenges. Abstract:
Background: Women are highly motivated and receptive to accept Family Planning (FP) methods during the postpartum period. Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) is one of the commonly used reversible methods of contraception and provide very effective, safe and long-term protection against pregnancy and the health risks associated with the method are negligible. Taking advantage of the immediate postpartum period for counselling on family planning and IUCD insertion, overcomes multiple barriers to service provision. The increased institutional deliveries are opportunity to provide women easy access to immediate PPIUCD services. Objective-The aim of the study was to determine proportion of women accepting postplacental intrauterine contraceptive device insertion, and to describe the factors associated with acceptability and non-acceptance.Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted from September 2021 to October 2021 in 250 women admitted for delivery at Gadag institute of medical sciences, Gadag. The respondents were interviewed using structured interviewer administered questionnaire. Results: In the study, it is found that overall awareness regarding PPIUCD in the study population is only 32% which is comparable with the study findings of Rajasthan where the 8 awareness was 20.2%. The readiness rate for PPIUCD insertion after the counselling in present study was 8% which is similar the study report from Government Medical College, Trissur, Kerala where the acceptance rate 1 was 10.5%. The major factors associated with nonacceptance were refusal by patient (50%) and relatives. Conclusions: The emerging factors for less acceptance of PPIUCD are low literacy rate among women and infrequent counselling and education during antenatal period. Integration of a PPIUCD counselling service at every delivery point with provision of couple counselling can improve the success of this programme.

Abstract:
The chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) is one of the important pulse crops grown in India. Chickpea wilt complex is one of the most devastating crop diseases in northern Karnataka. Because of abundant inoculum in the soil and suitable environment circumstances, infected plants die, resulting in full loss of yield. A random roaming study was done in important chickpea farming districts of northern Karnataka, namely Dharwad, Belagavi, Haveri, Gadag, Bagalkot, Kalaburgi, and Vijayapur, during Rabi 2021-22 and 2022-22, to establish disease incidence and its in severity in different places. The survey results demonstrated a link between three pathogens: Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. ciceri, Rhizoctonia bataticola, and Sclerotia rolfsii. Dharwad district has the highest illness incidence (30.20%), followed by Kalburgi district.with 29.85 per cent.

Abstract:
Aims: The Sclerotium wilt of brinjal caused by S. rofsii is an important disease and occurs severely in the brinjal growing areas of northern Karnataka. To gain knowledge about the prevalence of sclerotium wilt of brinjal in different districts of northern Karnataka. And also to study the factors that contribute to the disease occurrence following research was conducted. Study Design: Roving survey. Place and Duration of Study: The laboratory studies were conducted in the Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad during rabi 2020-21. Methodology: A roving survey was conducted in five northern Karnataka brinjal growing districts during rabi 2020-21, observing Sclerotium wilt incidence and calculating percentages. The survey collected data was used to reveal a correlation between disease incidence and soil type, irrigation type, mulch type, and crop stage. Results: The survey conducted in five districts of northern Karnataka (Belagavi, Bagalkot, Dharwad, Haveri and Gadag) revealed that maximum disease incidence of 35.07 percent was recorded in Narendra village of Dharwad district followed by Nulageri village (17.71%) of Haveri district. No disease incidence was observed in Hanchinal village of Belagavi district and Pettur village of Bagalkot district. The average mean of district for Sclerotium wilt of brinjal was also recorded and results revealed that, Dharwad district showed maximum percent disease incidence (12.39%) followed by Haveri (9.03%), Gadag (7.93%) and the least percent disease incidence (6.89%) was recorded in Bagalkot district. Conclusion: A study on brinjal sclerotium wilt found that edaphic factors and agronomic practices, such as flooded irrigation and lack of mulching, contribute to high disease incidence in all five districts. Flooding spreads inoculum, while mulching improves soil temperature and restricts sclerotial germination. The fruiting and flowering stages of crops are most susceptible to disease due to nutrient imbalance and S. rolfsii invasion, urging the need for integrated management strategies to reduce brinjal sclerotium wilt.

Abstract:
Bacterial pneumonia is the most common respiratory problem in small ruminants. The heart blood and lung tissue samples from two dead sheep suffering from pneumonia at the age of six month were subjected for histopathology, bacterial isolation & identification and antibiogram. Acute fibrinous bronchopneumonia was observed at necropsy and histopatholgy. The isolates were identified as P. multocida based on cultural and biochemical properties, and additionally confirmed by species-specific PCR amplification of KMT1 (Multocida toxin hydrolase gene) gene with the amplicon of 460 bp. The antibiogram showed susceptibility to chloramphenicol, β-lactams, quinolones, fluoroquinolones and aminoglycosides. In this study, the occurrence of ovine pasteurellosis caused by P. multocida with acute fibrinous bronchopneumonia was recorded.

Boriss Judins ir „ОРЛИТА” (Amerikas Krievu rakstnieku apvienības) biedrs. Izplatīta stratēģija diasporas autoru vēsturē – iekapsulēties pagātnes atmiņās, pārvērtēt tās, sniegt pagātnes notikumiem jaunu interpretāciju no savu tekstu un savas uzturēšanās vietas skatpunkta. Tagadne diasporas autoru darbos biežāk marķēta kā noklusētais, svešais, nepieņemamais. Romāns „Jukusī pilsēta“ (Город, который сошел с ума) pirmo reizi tika publicēts 2005. gadā, Vācijā, žurnālā «Зарубежные записки», un pēc diviem gadiem izdots Maskavā. B. Judins izvēlas savu dzimto pilsētu, lai reprezentētu padomju pilsētas modeli „Brežņeva laikmeta“ beigās. Romāns „Jukusī pilsēta“ – tas ir romāns farss, kurā autoram svarīgi atainot ideoloģizētas padomju pilsētas modeli un tā sabrukuma cēloņus. Gandrīz visi romāna segmenti tiek pakļauti karnevāliskiem elementiem.
