Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractThe article aims to analyze the carnival story of G.R.E.S. Beija-Flor of Nilópolis in the year of 1975 titled "The great decade". We seek to approach, through materiality created with unfolding of textual plot for the visual, carnival fantasies as a tool for propagating the military ideology during the period of the "Brazilian miracle". The patriotic plots of this period, known nowadays as the "white plate", have given the military-aligned groups the patriotic school stigma. The Nilópolis samba school carried this heavy burden, even after the signing of the carnival Joãozinho Trinta, with the plot "Dreaming of a King of the Lion" in 1976, which won the championship that year. Thus, the carnivalesco and the association were nevertheless criticized and judged by the marks of a not distant past: the year of 1975.Keywords: Carnival, White Plate, Beija-Flor, Military, Fantasy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The phenomenon of ‘unknown’ infant deaths addressed in this article was first explored in the course of research on fatalities arising from political violence during the Irish revolution of 1916–1921. Our data are derived from the General Register of Death Indices (G.R.D.I.), held in the General Register Office, Dublin, which are organised alphabetically, and which form an official record of deaths registered either by relatives of the deceased or by medical personnel. When infant ‘unknown’ fatalities were extracted to form a discrete database they showed a curious gender disparity. There were 100 male infant fatalities recorded for every seventy-eight females in the thirty-two counties over the five-year period. On extending the study to 1932, the same ratio was prevalent in the overall dataset of 895 ‘unknown infants’ drawn from the G.R.D.I. (a dataset which excludes the six counties of Northern Ireland for the period from1922). Initial research into the gender imbalance opened out wider questions concerning social mores regarding illegitimacy, and the extent of medical and lay knowledge of how newborn infants might be brought to death.

Abstract:
Alessandro Anselmi and Paola Chiatante’s project for the New Municipal Cemetery in Parabita (Lecce) is the result of the research carried out within the G.R.A.U. atelier since the early Sixties and contributes to heralding a period of accomplished emancipation from that “superstition of the new” which by then was perceived as ossified academic-professional orthodoxy. A focus on field-specific content and processes, as well as an open dialogue with the archetypes, as well as with the linguistic and symbolic codes that enhance historical experience constitute the premises from which originates a work that is as conceptually complex and articulate as it is strongly expressive in its built substance.

Abstract:
This paper presents the results of measurements of vibrations of the pipes of the steam superheater installed in the convection pass of the 235 MWe Circulating Fluidized Bed boiler (CFB) induced using sonic soot blowers of the Nirafon NI-100 type. The measurements were made using two ICP Triaxial 356A16 accelerometers allowing the analysis of accelerations in the maximum range of ±490 m/s2. Simultaneously with vibration measurements, the sound pressure level was recorded using the G.R.A.S. 40BH high-pressure microphone. The measurements and spectral analysis of the recorded signals showed that the acoustic wave of 148 dB is safe for the steam superheater pipes causing vibrations of maximum amplitude not exceeding 1 mm. The field tests confirmed the supposition that the dominant mechanism for cleaning the surfaces of the superheater’s heating pipes are not pipe vibrations, but the breakage of cohesion forces between dust particles.

Abstract:
The present dissertation has analyzed the “cariocalização” of Porto Alegre’s carnival, during its adoption and consolidation as a cultural event of the city – between 1962 and 1973. Initially satiating that there is a carioca’s way of making carnival, this research has analyzed how this way was adapted as it was made it official by the public authorities, like the competition between samba school’s parades as well as determined themes for the parades, with different sectors in it. By using oral and documental fonts, this research has tried to make it clear the questions referring to the adaptation of the carioca’s model of carnival adopted by the samba schools of Porto Alegre.

This paper purposes the comprehension and reflection on which manner occurs the corporal training of the scenic chorus of parades of the G.R.E.S. Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, through the carnival plots which compose its “amazonic triad”, such as: i “Pará – O Mundo Místico dos Caruanas nas Águas do Patu-Anu” (1998); ii “Manôa – Manaus – Amazônia - Terra santa... Considering the existence of a recreated, modernized and stylized mythology in those parades, I analyze the creation process engaged, also through the scenic arts, in order to institute “spetacularization” in popular culture. Therefore, I feature the valorization and conversion process of amazonic culture in the parades of a G.R.E.S., precisely in Beija-Flor de Nilópolis. Assuming the Amazon as core, I analyze the definitions of myth and cosmogony, reflecting on amazonic culture, which has its legends, myths and imaginary transferred from its current reality and nature, and also converted through the process of corporal training into the work of the performers, who compose the parades. From this process, results the charming phenomenon of Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Finally, this paper also tackles on the issue of theatricalization of Carnival as a basis to the establishment of the staging in the parades, as well as a process of conception of a “carnival show”.

Abstract:
The university technology transfer coach has an important role in supporting the commercialization of research results. This thesis has studied the technology transfer coach and their needs in the coaching process. The goal has been to investigate information needs of the technology transfer coach as a preliminary for the design of computer aids.Using a grounded theory approach, we interviewed 17 coaches working in the Swedish technology transfer environment. Extracted quotes from interviews were openly coded and categorized. The analysis show three main problem areas related to the information needs of the technology transfer coach; awareness, communication, and resources. Moreover, 20 features for future computer aids were extracted from the interview data and scenarios and personas where developed to exemplify the future use of computer aids.We conclude that there is a need for computer support in the coaching process. Such systems should aid the coach in; awareness, aiding the coach to focus on meetings; communication, aid the coach to transfer commercialisation knowledge; and resources, aid the coach in accessing and delivering of resources to the coachee. However, it is imperative that the computer aids do not interfere with the coach current process; and that the computer aid is not seen as the sole solution.

Gruffman, Paulina. "The Quest for Gnosis : G. R. S. Mead’s Conception of Theosophy." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Religionshistoria, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-192416.

Full text
Abstract:
G. R. S. Mead is an important but neglected historical personality of the British fin-de-siècle occult, Theosophical, and post-Theosophical milieu. While previous scholars of Theosophy have portrayed the Theosophical movement as quite cohesive in nature, I argue that it might have been a lot more pluralistic, with ostensibly key Theosophical concepts being open for debate. By a careful study of Mead’s editorial activity, his debates with other Theosophists in leading occultist journal over the period 1890s through 1910s, I illustrate that Mead held alternative views of key Theosophical concepts. This gives us a clue as to how the movement of Theosophy can be characterized differently. I suggest that we speak of many different “Theosophies” rather than one singular “Theosophy” to better capture the seemingly diverse makeup of the Theosophical movement. I look at three areas wherein Mead’s views differed from those of other important Theosophists: the concept of “the Masters” as spiritual authority, which sources to turn to and how to interpret them, and the question of whether occultism should be understood primarily in theoretical or in practical terms. I propose that by seeing Theosophy as a debating ground where many different Theosophists competed over the definition of their particular kind of Theosophy, we might also better account for why so many post-Theosophical currents emerged. Lastly, Mead’s concept of “Gnosis” might have served as a bridge between his Theosophical and post-Theosophical periods, as the concept’s meaning, along with Mead’s spiritual outlook, does not appear to have changed over time. This gives some consequences to how we conceive of post-Theosophy, since he does not fit neatly within that category.

Abstract:
Rapidly growing outlying communities, exasperated congestion, complex traffic challenges - coupled with the role of vehicle carbon emissions in climate change - have led to the need for long-term sustainable transportation planning in the Greater Victoria of British Columbia region. Using an exploratory mixed methods approach that employed a literature review, an on-line survey, interviews and the partaking of a personal transportation journey, this study examined the views of Greater Victoria residents regarding the implementation of a Victoria - Green Road Inner Duct (VIC-G.R.I.D.) network of roads as a way to address regional sustainable transportation needs. The study showed positive support from the residents with an approval rating of 81%, and described barriers, motivators and concerns identified by the residents (i.e., potential increase in congestion, funding, and resistance to change). The study results will inform policy development and planning of publicly and politically acceptable transportation strategies in the Greater Victoria region.

Abstract:
When a new deadly disease emerged in urban gay enclaves in the early 1980s, officials originally named it G.R.I.D. (gay-related immune deficiency). The New Right used AIDS as the latest evidence of America’s moral decline, stoking public fears that the disease would spill over into the “general population” and demanding that states implement more invasive control measures. This chapter explores how campaigns to criminalize HIV spread across the country starting in the mid-1980s. Fears of sex work and homosexuality drove early efforts, while one state’s law helped to spread HIV-specific criminal laws across the nation—sparking an epidemic of legislation that would spread to forty-five states.

Abstract:
Abstract While Edward Elgar was writing his Enigma Variations , he went for a walk along the banks of the River Wye with his friend G. R. Sinclair. Sinclair brought his bulldog Dan, who fell in the river and barked as he climbed out again. Sinclair turned to Elgar and said ‘Set that to music’. So Elgar did, in the variation named G.R.S. after Sinclair. Elgar’s manuscript marks ‘Dan’ at the point where Dan barks, though the printed editions rather prudishly leave it out.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the modernist afterlives of the Theosophical Society, and how the heterodox sympathies and sensibilities of Blavatsky and her followers would stimulate a return of Western mysticism in two deeply influential splinter groups of the early twentieth century: G.R.S. Mead’s Quest Society and Rudolf Steiner’s Anthroposophical Society. By 1909, Mead and Steiner had both fallen into disagreement with the Theosophical Society and saw an opportunity to propose a refreshed and repackaged theosophy rooted in the Matter of Britain, Rosicrucianism, and a Christological cosmology. While each brought their own distinguishing cultural quintessence to the enterprise (Mead took particular interest in the Grail mythos, while Steiner rooted his teachings in the healthy-living communitarian Lebebensreform [‘life-reform’] movement), both epitomised the modernist flourishing of theosophical ideals and the easy trafficking of ideas between mystical discipline and literary creation. At a time when the threat of war was increasingly difficult to discount, these two substantial outgrowths from the Theosophical Society represented an almost counterintuitive turn away from the spiritual traditions of India and Tibet to the spiritual inheritance of an increasingly fraught Europe.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how a community of famous (e.g., Pound, Tagore, Underhill) and obscure writers from Europe, Asia, Africa, and North America created a self-consciously modern concept of religion that encompassed Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Buddhist, Hindu, and other traditions in the understudied yet influential periodical The Quest (1909-1931), edited by former Theosophist G.R.S. Mead. This concept of religion was specifically global and worldly: it depicted religious experience as a universal human experience and major “force” in world-historical events such as the Great War. In this discourse, two kinds of transcendence define religion in modernity: 1) a sustained spiritual transcendence of one’s individual self, and 2) a universalizing transcendence of specific religious traditions, experienced as access to a global, all-encompassing tradition that features individual spiritual transcendence. Defining religion this way, The Quest offers, in contrast to an already familiar secularisation narrative, a story of spiritualisation in which modernization entails spiritual intensification marked by the increased importance of spiritual experience to society. Through its periodical form, The Quest offered a means to the kind of transcendent spiritual experience described and theorized in the poetry, fiction, and essays it featured.

Abstract:
The microphone calibration by the reciprocity technique specified in IEC 61094-2 is used to determine the sensitivity of laboratory standard microphones according to the IEC 61094-1 with the smallest measurement uncertainty for the use as reference microphones. So far, laboratory standard microphones by the manufacturer Brüel & Kjær (Type 4160 and Type 4180) are almost exclusively used as laboratory reference microphones. In order to create an alternative, the initiative has been taken to examine the usability of the ½-inch laboratory microphones G.R.A.S. 40AU-1. Studies were launched to check the microphone parameters, the stability and the reciprocity of the microphones as well as the compatibility with microphones by Brüel & Kjær. Basis for the investigation was a new validated reciprocity calibration system. The realization of the system and the research results are presented and discussed. Additionally, results of comparison measurements with national metrology institutes are shown in shortened fashion.

Abstract:
Abstract Foam metal is a foam-like substance made out of metal and can be used in flow control, vibration damping and acoustic absorption mainly based on their special physical properties. A kind of foam metal casing treatment is proposed and tested in this study. The impact of the foam metal casing treatment on compressor stability and noise reduction are experimentally investigated. The foam metal selected in the experiments is constructed from ferronickel and its PPI (pores per inch) is 35. The foam metal casing treatment comprises annular support casing and foam metal ring. The effect of foam metal location on stability of the test compressor are investigated by placing shims in support casing. Both time-mean and high-response instrumentation are applied to capture the steady and unsteady compressor performances with the presence of the foam metal casing treatment. 20 microphones of G.R.A.S type are used to measure in-duct acoustic level of the compressor. It is found that the SMI (stall margin improvement) is 36.1% and the efficiency loss is 1.5% at location 7. When foam metal moves to rotor leading edge, the SMI as well as the efficiency loss are getting smaller. The optimal location in the experiments is location 4 where the SMI of compressor is 14.9% and the efficiency loss is 0.1%. The interaction of foam metal with flow in the blade tip region at these locations are investigated and presented in detail. The PSD (power spectrum density) analysis is carried out to show the unsteady signal development in stall inception. The noise attenuation varies in 0.18∼1.6 dB when foam metal is at different locations. Finally, the mechanism and application of the foam metal casing treatment are also discussed.
