Full textBackgroundIt is today commonly known that physical activity is of importance for the physical and psychological development in children and teenagers. PurposeThe purpose of this study was to find out what motivates pupils to be physically active and also to find out what may increase the pupils’ physical activity during the school day. The purpose was also to investigate the teachers’ opinions about the pupils’ physical activity. MethodThe survey was conducted by means of three questionnaires. Participating in the study were two schools in two different municipalities in Sweden. Pupils in grade 7 and 8 (age 13-14) answered two separate questionnaires, 139 pupils in total. In addition, teachers answered a separate questionnaire where 8 answered questionnaires were collected.ResultsThe study shows that the main contribution that would motivate the pupils to increase their physical activity during the school day, were longer breaks. None of the teachers suggested this. The pupils’ motives for being physically active were mainly that they think it is fun and because they feel good while exercising. ConclusionWith small means an increase in pupils’ physical activity during the school day can be reached. However, it demands a higher awareness about which contributions that have the best effects on the physical activity.

Full textAim The aim of the study is to investigate how school leaders at secondary schools in Stockholm County talk about students’ opportunity for daily physical activity during school hours. The aim has been concretised into three issues: How do school leaders view the assignment in the curriculum on daily physical activity? How do school leaders describe the school's work in offering students daily physical activity? And how do school leaders view physical activity in relation to learning? Method The study is of a qualitative approach and data has been collected through interviews with five respondents who work as principal or assistant principal at five different secondary schools. The theoretical starting points of the study are the curriculum and framework factor theory. Results The majority of the school leaders stated that they work to offer their students daily physical activity and the purpose is to improve the learning and their students’ health. The students are offered daily physical activity through scheduled movement training, voluntary movement training, movement breaks in teaching, breaks, P.E. lessons and by moving in the school buildings. The school leaders underline that physical activity has a positive impact on students' learning and also affects their behaviour in school. However, they emphasize that the students do not perform better at a specific subject. Conclusion All secondary school students are offered the opportunity for daily physical activity to a greater or lesser extent. It depends on how the school has chosen to work with the assignment in the curriculum. The schools can choose by them selves how to offer their students daily physical activity. Based on the assignment in the curriculum they can make it from each schools own condition. Much of the daily physical activity offered is voluntary, meaning that students do not automatically become physically active just because they are given the opportunity to be physically active.

Full textAbstract Aim: The aim of this study was, from a curriculum theory perspective, to examine headmasters´ views of daily physical activity in schools. Which conditions do headmasters in schools and a municipality work by and how does an option for physical activity correlate in schools? Further, how do headmasters work for daily physical activity in school ages 12 to 15. Method: The participants consisted of five headmasters from five schools and one chief education officer from a municipality in northern Stockholm. They were interviewed based on an interview guide and a phenomenological approach. Results: Physical environment in schoolyards and inside schools was a key issue to headmasters of the schools and the chief education officer. The results indicate differences between the schools, but cooperation between teachers and subjects was one way that the informants suggested to overcome the problems. Conclusions: Cooperation between teachers of different subjects and greater opportunities of physical activity are examples of strategies in schools to increase daily physical activity. For example schoolyards, lessons outdoor and open indoor halls. Cooperation is also necessary because the physical health is important for the pupils in long terms.
