Abstract:
Fundraising or collecting zakat is the main pillar in an institution for managing zakat, infak and alms or ZIS. The existence of ZIS will have an impact on the welfare of the community in order to alleviate poverty. So there is a need for cooperation in the Zakat Collection Unit (UPZ). One of them is the cooperation with educational institutions which will strengthen the role of higher education institutions or educational institutions for the benefit of the community through zakat funding by participating in UPZ. Abstract Public fundraising system is a key element in the construction of modern philanthropic system. The Charity Law of the People’s Republic of China officially establishes the management mode that combines administrative licensing of public fundraising qualification and registration of fundraising proposals. How this management mode will affect the “ecology” of philanthropy after the Charity Law takes effect is an issue worth close attention. Taking the practices of Guangzhou, the earliest explorer in fundraising system reform and relaxation of public fundraising restrictions, as example, this paper analyzes the influences of relaxing public fundraising restrictions on public fundraising monopoly, reform of government-run charitable organizations, resource structure of non-profit organizations and the construction of philanthropic supervision system and accordingly, proposes recommendations on the implementation of public fundraising system.

Abstract:
While online medical crowdfunding achieved tremendous success, quantitative study about whether and how medical crowdfunding helps people remains little explored. In this paper, we empirically study how online medical crowdfunding helps people using more than 27,000 fundraising cases in Waterdrop Fundraising, one of the most popular online medical crowdfunding platforms in China. We find that the amount of money obtained by fundraisers is broadly distributed, i.e., a majority of lowly donated cases coexist with a handful of very successful cases. We further investigate the factors that potentially correlate with the success of medical fundraising cases. Profile information of fundraising cases, e.g., geographic information of fundraisers, affects the donated amounts, since detailed description may increase the credibility of a fundraising case. One prominent finding lies in the effect of social network on the success of fundraising cases: the spread of fundraising information along social network is a key factor of fundraising success, and the social capital of fundraisers play an important role in fundraising. Finally, we conduct prediction of donations using machine learning models, verifying the effect of potential factors on the success of medical crowdfunding. Altogether, this work presents a data-driven view of medical fundraising on the web and opens a door to understanding medical crowdfunding.

Abstract:
Ethical issues in the contemporary Chinese fundraising industry are increasingly foregrounded, and effective governance has emerged as a particularly important and urgent priority. However, this issue has not received sufficient theoretical and practical attention. We apply a range of tools (factual and value-based, inductive and deductive approaches; historical and logical dialectics; and comparative analysis) to briefly describe the historical development of domestic and international fundraising ethics. We clarify its importance by drawing on a factual description of the main ethical issues in the fundraising industry. A comparative analysis of the three main ethical theories of utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics reveals that virtue ethics is more adaptable in guiding fundraising behavior in contemporary China. In order to effectively address the many ethical issues in the fundraising industry, we argue that a process approach should be adopted that draws on a virtue ethics perspective, which focuses on the character of fundraisers at the time of qualification. We optimize the code of fundraising ethics by drawing on a combination of character and normative provisions, and regulate fundraising behavior, which enables us to shape fundraisers’ professional virtues. Fundraising performance is evaluated by referring to fundraising results, motivation and emotion. We find that while there are still some ethical dilemmas and conflicts in the fundraising industry, issues of good and evil, right and wrong and value ranking still lack a consensus and are open-ended. Future research needs to address this limitation.

Abstract:
We examine the role of incumbent fundraising in deterring strong challengers. We construct a signaling model in which incumbents can use fundraising strategically to ward off quality challengers. We show, however, that only under very limited circumstances will there be an observable relationship between fundraising and challenger quality. Therefore, previous empirical tests for deterrence have systematically underestimated the effects of fundraising in decreasing electoral competition. Our analysis also suggests that by making fundraising easily observable, Federal Election Commission regulations may encourage candidates to overinvest time and resources accumulating large war chests instead of governing.

Abstract:
The extent to which judges should be involved in fundraising for civic and charitable causes is an important issue of judicial ethics. The default principle adopted by judicial councils in Canada precludes judges from fundraising subject to only minor exceptions. Yet anecdotal evidence indicates that some Canadian judges do engage in fundraising. This raises the question of whether there should be a change to the principle so as to allow judges greater scope for fundraising activities. The aim of this article is to review the ethical principles for judicial fundraising and evaluate whether they require modifications for the modern Canadian judiciary. The authors consider several hypothetical fundraising scenarios and propose recommendations to the Canadian Judicial Council’s Ethical Principles for Judges.

The study focuses on the application of innovative waqf fundraising and communication strategies in three waqf-based pesantrens, namely Pondok Darussalam Gontor, Darunnajah, and Tazakka. The primary data are obtained through semi-structured interviews, while the secondary data are collected through observations and document reviews. Both data provide important and useful insights into understanding the waqf fundraising and communication approaches in these waqf institutions. In addition, thematic analysis is utilised in this study to analyse the application of the waqf fundraising models that contribute significantly to the development of waqf in the sampled pesantrens. The results of the study suggest that different types of waqf institutions apply different waqf fundraising methods. Darussalam Gontor and Darunnajah waqf institutions have a similar propensity for using traditional waqf fundraising approaches in which mobilisation and collection of waqf utilise retail and partnership fundraising techniques. While, Tazakka waqf institution applies both modern (market-oriented) and traditional waqf fundraising methods, in which retail, partnership, and crowd (jamā’i) fundraising techniques are used for mobilisation of their waqf. In relation to communication, these three waqf institutions utilise the same methods, that is, individual and community-oriented communications for linking their waqf programmes and activities. These methods of communication are set up to build and manage stronger relationships with key wāqifs. Finally, the study found that these waqf institutions have implemented simple communication approaches and utilised an effective fundraising method in creating and maintaining individual and institutional contributions.

Abstract:
In this article, I report findings from an investigation into the politics and coordination of school fundraising in the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Theoretically grounded in institutional ethnography and critical policy analysis, the study began from the standpoint of parents asked to give money to their children’s school(s). I show how provincial and TDSB funding, parent involvement, fundraising, and school council policies organize parents’ experience of school fundraising. I also explore how participating in fundraising enables parents to meet neoliberal expectations of a “good parent” and how through their efforts to secure advantages for their children, fundraising parents are accomplices in the privatization of public education. I conclude by discussing possibilities for intervention into the social organization of school fundraising in TDSB schools.
