Abstract:

Abstract:
The topic of my graduation thesis is ?Fundraising in the Czech Republic: The Winton Train Project?. The first part of the thesis deals with the options and obtaining of the financial resources for various cultural events from many different sources: from grants and public funds, organizations and committees concentrated around the bodies of the EU, funds of respective regions, the ministries of the Czech Republic as well as from individual Czech cities. I describe that it is also possible to approach non-public sources of finance, such as from businesses for example. The second part of the thesis provides the background, production and analysis of the Winton Train project itself, focusing specifically on the fundraising activity of this socio-cultural event. The third and the final part reflects the production and fundraising experience I gained while carrying out the project ?Charles Bridge 2010? - the outdoor exhibition of photographs in Prague?s Kampa Park. The goal of the thesis, ?Fundraising in the Czech Republic: The Winton Train Project? is to explain the complexity of the task of fundraising, which does not lie simply in obtaining financial means. Fundraising is a set of various complex activities intertwined with the sustainable existence of civil society.

Abstract:
This research sought to explore organisational factors that drive successful fundraising. Drawing on Strategic Management theory, this qualitative study examined the key intraorganisational factors that organisations develop to be effective at fundraising within the context of extraorganisational factors that can affect fundraising effectiveness. In this way, it helps build a fundraising effectiveness theory. The findings from this study afford leaders of nonprofits an opportunity to reflect on their reasons for pursuing fundraising as an income stream, their level of understanding of fundraising, the degree of investment they are willing to make and the critical leadership required by the CEO.

Abstract:
Objectives: The US healthcare system will have to exist on reduced funding in the future, creating a need for new funding sources for health science libraries to survive. The purpose of this study is to investigate funraising in academic allopathic medical libraries. Methods: A cross-sectional methodology was implemented. An electronic survey was utilized to ask fifteen fundraising questions to participants. The questions consisted of: current status of library fundraising, perceptions of the central development office, utilizing fundraising positions inside the library, types of fundraising activities used, most successul fundraising positions inside the library, five year fundraising income, fundraising advertising, utilization of funds, challenges and motivations to fundraising, and donor recognition. These questions were loaded onto checkbox survey software for distribution. The survey was distributed to five members of a blinded focus group for testing. Potential academic medical library groups were identifitied that have academic medical libraries with diverse sizes and budgets. The decision to use CONBLS consortium was decided based on these factors. Results: An email letter containing a survey link and cover letter was sent to all 21 CONBLS members. Usable responses wree received from 15 institutions, or 71.4% of the libraries. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the responses to specific questions. Conclusions: Academic medical libraries in the Southeast region are highly interested in fundraising, but less than half of the libraries consider themselves active fundraisers. Many challenges associated with establishing an active fundraising program exist. Similar fundraising challenges exist in general academic libraries and medical library professionals should reference this literature. In order to improve these statistics, educating directors on fundraising at group levels as CONBLS, SCMLA, and ALADN would help encourage discussion and promote larger fundraising efforts. Establishing key relationships on campus is important for academic medical libraries to establish a continuous cycle of fundraising.

Abstract:
The systematic, downward trend in state funding support to public higher education has resulted in many higher education institutions undertaking large-scale, coordinated fundraising projects or capital campaigns in order to increase third stream income. There is a dearth of research which explores stakeholder management – one of the key knowledge areas in project management – in the public higher education fundraising environment. This research study set out to identify the issues which need to be considered when developing a stakeholder management strategy for fundraising projects at a South African public higher education institution. A qualitative, case study approach was adopted, with semi-structured interviews used to obtain the data. Thematic analysis was used for identifying and analysing patterns or themes within data. The University of Cape Town (UCT) was selected as the case. The research identified that there are a number and variety of stakeholders in the UCT fundraising environment. This could give rise to project complexity affecting the stakeholder landscape. The research highlighted there was a main focus on internal stakeholders, as well as certain external stakeholders necessary for providing third stream income to the university. Some of the strategies used to manage stakeholders were also those identified as critical success factors for effective stakeholder management. The research highlighted the importance of relationship management and stewardship as stakeholder management strategies, which supports the normative approach of stakeholder management. The study found that internal stakeholders possibly cause uncertainty in projects, and hence stakeholder management strategies could mitigate against the possible negative effects.

Nonprofit organizations across the United States utilize participatory sporting events such as running or walking races in order to raise awareness and funds for their cause. Large events, for example the Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco, attract thousands of participants and raise as much as $16 million annually for one cause. Smaller events held in small towns to large cities may attract as few as one hundred participants and raise considerably less for their cause. Representatives of nonprofit organizations and race directors were interviewed regarding staff time and costs involved in producing a run/walk event held in Oregon. Recurring characteristics and best practices for a run/walk event were identified. In addition to the funds raised less the cost to produce the event, measurements of success for this type of special event may include factors such as educating and attracting new constituents to the cause.

Abstract:

Abstract:
As funds dwindle and costs rise university advancement staff have been given higher fundraising goals to meet the needs. In addition, university advancement staff have received pressure to review and lower the costs of fundraising to become more efficient (Drezner, 2011). To enable university advancement staff to attain goals, advocate for resources, or enhance processes, university advancement staff are challenged to measure their effectiveness. However, the process of measuring university fundraising success is unclear as there are many variables to consider and several ways to determine success. For this study the Delphi Technique (Hsu & Sanford, 2007) was used with 3 rounds of questionnaires. Seventeen experts of fundraising analytics were asked to identify both quantifiable and nonquantifiable variables that should be included in a comprehensive model to determine success in university fundraising. Findings include quantifiable measures such as return on investment, growth in giving reports, new and recaptured donors, and fundraiser performance and activity metrics. In addition, findings include nonquantifiable measures such as institutional and environmental forces were identified by the participants as critical components to comprise in a comprehensive model. Further findings include a variety of other metrics, both quantifiable and nonquantifiable, that were identified by the participants as critical components to comprise in a comprehensive evaluation model.

Abstract:
This research examined the language used by higher education development professionals, specifically similar and dissimilar tropes and how they shape the perception of those development professionals. By studying these linguistic devices, insight is provided into this particular occupation and the effects these devices have on perceptions and interpretation. The findings in this study could help to produce more skilled communicators in the field and could be used as a framework to study other professional positions. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to gather data from twelve participants, and the data was then analyzed through thematic analysis. Findings revealed the types of metaphors used by higher education fundraisers and if and how they shaped their perceptions of the profession. Findings also showed what contradictions, paradoxes, and ironies are found in the field and if and how they shaped perceptions of the profession. This study applies theoretical aspects of organizational communication to the field of higher education development presenting new data. This study also provides practical implications for those currently in the field to consider.

Abstract:
Fundraising for higher education is a recent phenomenon in Uganda where the government has supported education for decades. Recent structural adjustment and liberalization policies mandated by the World Bank and the IMF and internal financial exigencies have necessitated funding diversification in higher education in Uganda and increased the need for private financial support. In developed countries like the United States, Canada, and increasingly, the United Kingdom, private support from alumni, individuals, corporations, and other stakeholders is a key component of higher education funding. This study used qualitative methodology and a holistic case study research design to explore the fundraising function at Makerere University. Tierney's organizational culture conceptual framework was used and data were collected through semi-structured interviews, an alumni questionnaire, document analysis, and observations. The findings include a governance and management structure that does not adequately support the fundraising function, strategies that are adapted to suit the Ugandan cultural context, perceptions of corruption and lack of transparency; and internal conflicts that limit communication and damage the image of the institution. The findings show that Makerere University is not strategically capitalizing on its position as the oldest and largest public university in Uganda and the region to mobilize private support. Reforms addressing the issues and seeking to enhance student and alumni experiences are contributing to fundraising success in various units. The reform efforts include transitioning to a collegiate system, procuring enterprise- wide financial and student services systems, faculty and staff sensitization, outreach and community engagement. The focus on the vision, mission and operationalizing the strategic plan presents an opportunity to dialogue with stakeholders and resonates with potential donors. The findings highlight a renewed spirit of resourcefulness that leverages old paradigms to integrate economic, cultural and social contexts to proffer innovative models of funding diversification.

Abstract:
Nonprofit organizations are essential in providing goods and services to the under-resourced in the community. Nonprofits have experienced a growth rate of 47% in 2014 and yet 53% of nonprofits reported less than 3 months cash on hand needed to meet the demands of their clients. This explorative and descriptive study analyzed nonprofit fundraising strategies for providing sustainable quality services. The purpose of this study was to determine what strategies successful nonprofits used to increase funding as it relates to the delivery of quality sustainable service and what conditions influenced fundraising effectiveness. The methodology consisted of a qualitative, thematic research design. The sample consisted 19 participants who held executive level positions in their organizations. Data were collected through a series of recorded in-depth interviews and analyzed using a contrast-comparative qualitative thematic analysis of the recording and written transcription and the NVivo Software Data Management Program. The findings of the study revealed that leaders with transformative attributes and demonstrably connected to the mission drive the fundraising success of the organization by influencing donor relationships, strategies, and performance. The implications of the study include sustainable delivery of service by the development of effective leadership models for the internal stakeholders thus, positively influencing donor behavior and improved quality of life for the under-resourced over a sustained period. Future research using the mixed methods is recommended for examining how leadership styles may influence funding sustainability.

Abstract:
The recent economic downturn has slowed down public sector severely and the situation is expected to get worse until the economy recovers. This is the main reason why also public higher education has grown to appreciate added support from charitable gifts. Therefore, the competition for private charitable donations has become fierce and donors are exposed to an increasing number of solicitations for support. Moreover, fundraising has been acknowledged as “a persuasive activity that seeks to convince donors to a worthy cause”. Furthermore, in a wider perspective, fundraising is not only the science of raising funds, but also the science of financial sustainability of a social cause. From that reasoning, this research is focused on the public sector, with a particular regard to public universities. The mission of a governmental organization defines the value that the organization intends to produce for its stakeholders and for society at large. The former, in order to get its mission and to create value, needs funds, which are not totally delivered by central governments. Therefore, public universities have to fulfill needs through their functions, supported by fundraising activities, trying to involve several types of stakeholders. The research aim of this study is basically to understand, interpret and explain the fundraising phenomenon, process, and activities and how they works within the Italian higher education context. General results will be discussed considering the Resource Dependence Theory framework developed by studies within higher education context. In order to get the research’s aim and to answer to the previous questions, the following chapters will compose the dissertation thesis. First of all, a general introduction about the context, main objectives and contents of the study will be delivered. This section is followed by a general literature review on the topic, with a description of what is the original contribution of the chapters. Afterwards, three essays about the topic are presented, with a specific introduction for each of them and the links to the overall objectives of the thesis. Finally, general conclusions will be stated in the last chapter.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Many business schools in the United States have experienced a decrease in funding. To compensate for the reduced revenue and remain competitive, a number of these institutions have discovered new and creative ways to raise money, such as using the Internet. This study examined the impact that the Internet has on business school philanthropy and identified online giving trends among randomly selected AACSB International accredited institutions in the United States. A 20-item questionnaire was used to measure the results. Of the 107 business schools that participated in this study, 36.4% (n=39) raised money online. Data also revealed that 66.7% of the business schools that raised money online reported that the average size of an individual online gift was $250 or less, and nearly 80% of the respondents claimed that online donations accounted for 10% or less of the total amount they received in annual donations. This study also explored other variables such as the type of institution (public or private) that accepted online donations as well as the type of fundraising office a business school had (decentralized, centralized, or combined). Donor characteristics and marketing strategies used by business schools to promote their online fundraising programs were also examined. The results revealed that many business schools did not accurately track the demographics and characteristics of their online donors. Findings from this study indicated that advancements in technology have increased the opportunities for obtaining financial support to business schools. The results can be used as a benchmark for future investigations.

Abstract:

The voluntary sector is growing in importance; in fundraising turnover, number of players and marketing professionalism. This study explores the process by which the fundraising organisations define and develop their propositions to the market. Starting with an observation that organisations with very different history and tradition present themselves to the market in similar ways, it investigates how three leading Swedish organisations create the basis for their propositions to the market of donors, which in fundraising practice jargon is called the Case for Support. Drawing upon research in philanthropic giving and organisational identity, the author suggests a theoretical framework for such a fundraising Case for Support. It recognises two main sources of influence, an external market source driven by donors, consumer image and behavioural trends and an internal mission driven source, defined by organisational history, values and programme track record. In the playing field between Market and Mission an organisation can reflect, develop and communicate their Case for Support – and their own "selves".

Abstract:
The private equity industry has had a fluctuating history. In the years between 2003 and  2007 the private equity industry expanded tremendously, yet in 2008 a financial turmoil  caused significant deviation in the activity of the industry. During the credit crunch the  liquidity in the market decreased affecting the sources of capital available. When several  firms compete about the capital available, fundraising becomes increasingly difficult and  competition intensifies. Sweden is one of the largest private equity markets in Europe and  has among the Nordic countries been able to raise the largest amount of funds. The  purpose of this study is to examine the fundraising process implemented by private equity  firms, nevertheless the relationship that emerges between the fund manager and the  investor. The authors’ objective is to provide an adequate interpretation of the private  equity industry in Sweden.   The authors have implemented a qualitative method, as the objective has been to obtain a  profound picture of how private equity firms manage their fundraising. The abductive  approach has been used in order to collect empirical data and semi-structured interviews  have been carried out with representatives from four private equity firms. In addition, a  smaller survey has been performed with two institutional investors to add to the objectivity.  Subsequently, the empirical data has been analysed in regards to theory and compared in  relation to the sources to end up in a conclusion.  The authors have through the study concluded that private equity firms in Sweden with a  focus in buyouts not have a common fundraising model. Private equity funds are selective  in their choice of investors and prefer professional, loyal investors with a long-term  perspective and strong capital base. It has from the analysis emerged that good reputation,  history, team and experience is valuable in fundraising. Firms that are successful in their  operations and management appeal to investors. The investors are typically institutionalised  and invest in different asset classes, hence the diversification is mainly in the hands of the  investor.

Abstract:
This study is designed to identify traits that enable the novice professional to advance toward expertise in fundraising in higher education. The goal was to develop a conceptual framework that explains how the novice professional can advance toward expertise in fundraising in the higher education sector. This study found that CFREs employed in higher education tend to be Caucasian females between 41 and 60 years of age who move between jobs more commonly and tend to have less formal education than the older males now heading toward retirement. Male or female, younger or more mature, CFREs in this study tended to have fallen into their current careers by accident or without formal training for the profession. CFREs tend to rely upon annual conferences and informal networking for professional development rather than formal education. CFREs in this study identified several traits requisite for expertise in the field, even if they did not exhibit some of those traits themselves. Based upon these findings, a model for skill acquisition in higher education fundraising is proposed, and based upon that model a set of recommendations is offered for revisions to the current qualification and testing of CFREs and for the development of curriculum that will foster expertise. This curriculum is both replicable at multiple sites and expandable to other institutions and to online delivery, providing the industry with a means by which to prepare more fundraising professionals to meet the growing need in the sector.

Abstract:

Abstract:
