Abstract:
As a sign, tangible heritage is the most visible trace of the past in our daily life. In constant dialectic with the intangible heritage, it constitutes a physical presence that forces us to take concrete awareness. Knowledge of texts and stories, which for Vitruvius is the high road for the design and construction of a building, is also fundamental in the processes of deconstruction, according to the various stages and different perceptions, through ages and customs, up to retrace the process that transformed it into 'heritage'. The lexicon and the terminology of cultural heritage are in this sense the most important vector of knowledge, enhancement and dissemination. The volume seeks to bring together those who study the language of heritage, from different countries and through different methodologies, and those involved in its management, in order to offer points of view and ideas on the narration and perception of tangible and intangible heritage, in mediation across eras, cultures and identities.

Gjergji, Iside. Sociologia della tortura. Venice: Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-391-5.

Full text
Abstract:
This work addresses torture with the ambition to strengthen a properly sociological approach to it by bringing to the fore the social history of the tortured, also through the fundamental contribution of the political economy. This category is not utilised in an abstract way, it is brought into the picture through the social history of the bodies of those tortured. These bodies are not considered mere biological bodies subjugated by ‘power’, but rather bodies with a voice, bodies capable of revealing their social standing. Placing the bodies’ class at the centre of the analysis allows us to fully grasp the sociological substance of torture, to understand the underlying reasons for its historical persistence and constant diffusion. The book explores torture in a threefold way: firstly by analysing the image of torture as an effective hermeneutic tool of late modernity; secondly by adopting a historical perspective to identify structural elements and metamorphoses; thirdly by examining the concrete practices of torture to enable the establishment of a mutual relationship between history and biography.

Abstract:
This chapter will explicate a new teleological argument for theism, one based on the intelligibility of the universe and the science-friendly character of the laws of nature. Specifically, it begins by presenting some of the preliminary evidence that the fundamental parameters of physics fall in a relatively small range that maximizes our ability to make scientific discoveries. This is called as the “fine-tuning for scientific discovery.” It then shows how this fine-tuning provides potentially powerful new evidence for theism. Unlike the much discussed anthropic fine-tuning (or fine-tuning for life), this kind of fine-tuning cannot be explained by the multiverse hypothesis since it does not encounter an observer-selection effect. Further, it avoids some other objections commonly raised against the anthropic fine-tuning argument, such as the so-called normalizability problem. Consequently, this new fine-tuning argument has the potential of providing an outstanding supplement to the standard anthropic fine-tuning argument for theism.

Full text
Abstract:
Fitness maximization, or optimization, is a controversial idea in evolutionary biology. One classical formulation of this idea is that natural selection will tend to push a population up a peak in an adaptive landscape, as Sewall Wright first proposed. However, the hill-climbing property only obtains under particular conditions, and even then the ascent is not usually by the steepest route; this shows why it is misleading to assimilate the process of natural selection to a process of goal-directed choice. A different formulation of the idea of fitness-maximization is R. A. Fisher’s ‘fundamental theorem of natural selection’. However, the theorem points only to a weak sense in which selection is an optimizing process, for it requires that ‘environmental constancy’ be understood in a highly specific way. It does not vindicate the claim that natural selection has an intrinsic tendency to produce adaptation.
