It is shown that the standard definitions of truth-functionality, though useful for their purposes, ignore some aspects of the usual informal characterisations of truth-functionality. An alternative definition is given that results in a stronger notion that pays attention to those aspects.

Abstract:
Applications of the American Seismic Isolator Standard “SIS” are summarized. The SIS is the only construction standard that specifies design criteria for retaining the functionality of hospitals after earthquakes. The SIS specifies limits for in-structure accelerations and deformations. Earthquake data shows that the SIS limits are the maximum that can be tollerated and retain the functionaluity of hospitals after earthquakes. The Adana and Elazig hospital complexes retained 100% functionality after the severe earthquakes that occurred in Turkey in 2023 and 2020. These earthquakes resulted in 55,000 fatalities and 236 health care facilities losing functionality. Since the 1989 California earthquake, 18 structures with SIS isolators have retained 100% functionality after major earthquakes that caused over 800,000 deaths, and over 700,000 structures to be demolished. The functionality of these SIS structures saved many lives by enabling post-earthquake emergency services. Since 1985, SIS isolators have been implemented in over 40 million square meters of important buildings, bridges, and industrial facilities, in 34 countries. The cost to build these 40 million square meters of important structures with SIS isolators was about the same as constructing ductile moment frames for only collapse avoidance without isolators.

Abstract:
There are a number of devices now used in automobiles that allow subscribed companies to track the car and to aid the owner in the case of accidents, lockouts, being lost, etc. Even in the age of the cell-phone, having a human whom you can routinely contact and who is paid to help you when a problem occurs is reassuring. Given the forthcoming graying of the baby boomers with a significant proportion of us developing a dementia, along with the large number of people who suffer head injuries, strokes, and similar disorders, the market for a similar device, worn on the body—perhaps as a secured bracelet—appears obvious. Compensatory aids may have an important role to play in helping patients become functional—particularly when used as a reminder, to orient them to time and place, or to provide a human voice to give instructions when necessary. Since one operator potentially can handle many patients at the same time, it could be a cost-effective device to obtain. I say “may have an important role” because very few studies have used such a device, much less carefully evaluated its usefulness. In this issue, Fish, Manly, and Wilson (2008) describe a very nice application of a single-case design to evaluate the use of a compensatory device in a patient with a frontal lobe lesion associated with deficits in planning that were characterized as goal-neglect by the authors.

Abstract:
Benjamin Schnieder has argued that several traditional definitions of truth-functionality fail to capture a central intuition informal characterizations of the notion often capture. The intuition is that the truth-value of a sentence that employs a truth-functional operator depends upon the truth-values of the sentences upon which the operator operates. Schnieder proposes an alternative definition of truth-functionality that is designed to accommodate this intuition. We argue that one traditional definition of ‘truth-functionality’ is immune from the counterexamples that Schnieder proposes and is preferable to Schnieder’s alternative.

Abstract:
When selecting web services, users look for those that meet their requirements, primarily the overall functionality and non-functionality quality of service (QoS). In general, various service providers offer a large number of functionally similar services. That makes it very hard for users to find the best ones that satisfy their needs. Thus, service selection based on QoS has emerged as a challenging problem in service computing. So, the authors propose in this paper a web service selection method based on QoS prediction for clustering and ranking services using auto-encoder and k-means. Experiment results show that the proposed method efficiently improves the services' selection accuracy.

Abstract:
Fruit extract of the European blueberry, or bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), is a major component of a great number of pharmaceutical and food supplement products. Compared to most small fruits, bilberry has a high concentration of anthocyanin pigments. Anthocyanins are of biomedical interest due to their properties as antioxidants and protein cross linkers. The major clinical applications for anthocyanins are in ophthalmology, blood vessel and connective tissue disorders, and diabetes. Bilberries are harvested from wild stands throughout Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, and at higher altitudes in southeastern France. Because they are wild, a wide array of genotypes make up the commercial product. As part of an investigation of the nutraceutical components of North American wild lowbush blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium), we are comparing the anthocyanins and other phenolic components from fruit of commercially available Vaccinium species. We are particularly interested in the variation in composition among Vaccinium clones and species.

Abstract:
Glass serves a critical function in diverse technologies ranging from medicine to telecommunications. Fax machines and text scanners use micro-optic lens arrays made from ion-exchanged, gradedindex glass to image original documents. Data for long-distance communication by telephone or computer are transmitted in the form of modulated laser light through highly transparent glass fibers. These signals are boosted for long-haul transmission by stimulated emission in erbium-doped glass optical amplifiers. Lap-top computers use flat-panel-display glass in their liquid-crystal screens (see “Materials for Flat-Panel Displays,” MRS Bulletin, March 1996). Gall-bladder and hysterectomy surgeries have been made minimally invasive in part because of slender glass imaging endoscopes.Functionality in glass is expanding rapidly. New properties are often attributable to new defect species created by strong optical or electrical fields. For example rare-earth-doped ZBLAN glass (a commercial fluoride glass), when exposed to high peak-intensity femtosecond laser pulses, becomes phosphorescent. (See the cover of this issue.) The phosphorescence is visible to the naked eye up to 12 hours after illumination. Other compositions show similar effects. Phosphorescent glasses are transparent and may be more easily formed into contiguous films and fibers than powder or microcrystalline phosphors.

Abstract:
Blueberries (Vaccinium sp.) have a long history of use in native and folk medicine in North America and Europe. Today the European blueberry (bilberry) is used in a variety of pharmaceutical and food supplement products that are recommended for treating blood vessel disorders and ophthalmological conditions. Anthocyanins, the pigments that impart the blue color to blueberries, are considered the active ingredient in bilberry health products, although other related flavonoids are biomedically useful. Vaccinium flavonoids are antioxidants and are also recognized for their anticarcinogenic properties and usefulness in treating urinary tract infections. The most immediate, and perhaps greatest, opportunity for a health market for North American blueberries may be in promoting blueberries as a healthy food. As researchers continue to explore the biomedical usefulness of blueberries, the blueberry food industry should strive to retain the healthful phytochemical in their products.
