Loaiza, Arias Juan Raúl. "Emotions as functional kinds." Doctoral thesis, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.18452/21976.

Full text
Abstract:
In this dissertation, I address the question of how to construct scientific theories of emotions that are both conceptually sound and empirically fruitful. To do this, I offer an analysis of the main challenges scientific theories of emotions face, and I propose a meta-theoretical framework to construct scientific concepts of emotions as explications of folk emotion concepts. Part I discusses the main challenges theories of emotions in psychology and neuroscience encounter. The first states that a proper scientific theory of emotions must explain all and only the phenomena under the vernacular term ‘emotion’ with a common set of conceptual resources and under an overarching generic concept of emotion. The second demands that each emotion category corresponds to well-coordinated sets of neural, physiological, and behavioral patterns of responses. I argue that none of the best contemporary theories of emotions in psychology and neuroscience overcomes these challenges. As a result, a new theory of emotions is required. In Part II, I develop the meta-theoretical framework to construct a theory of emotions that overcomes the challenges above. First, I propose a pluralistic account of scientific kinds based on different patterns of projection that various disciplines may take to justify inductive inferences. These are essentialist, historical, and social patterns. Each of these patterns provides a framework to construct different types of scientific concepts. I argue that among the frameworks for scientific kinds available, the one that is best suited to explicate emotion concepts is a functional framework. Consequently, I conclude by recommending scientists pursue functionalist theories of emotions over essentialist, historical, or social theories.

Dragulinescu, Stefan. "Disease kinds and functional explanations." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2010. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.551662.

Full text
Abstract:
The present thesis is concerned with the character of kinds in human somatic pathology and the relation that these kinds and their members have with function-based explanations. More precisely, in the first part of the thesis I investigate whether diseased organisms, grouped together on grounds of their shared pathological features, could form natural kinds, taking into account that the paradigmatic natural kinds are the kinds of the exact sciences. The second part of the thesis has as a backdrop the Humean/anti-Humean debate over causation (and the specific construal of explanations according to which to explain is to pinpoint causes). In this backdrop, I enquire into what sort of function-based explanations we could provide for the symptoms and pathological behaviours exhibited by diseased organisms, if we construe such organisms as members of natural kinds. I argue in the first part of the thesis that from a metaphysical point of view, the organisms dealt with in somatic medicine form natural kinds in the same sense in which we take the kinds dealt with in the exact sciences as natural. By comparing a 'classical', exact science kind with a kind of disease, I show that whatever features are associated with natural kind membership (e.g, involvement in laws or inductions, explanatory relevance, possession of 'essential' properties, instantiation of substantive universals, etc.) there is no 'ontological gap' between disease kinds and the kinds in the exact sciences. The conclusion that diseases are natural kinds has a certain proviso regarding the question of whether the identity of the individual members of natural kinds is dependent upon their kind membership. Should diseases not be natural kinds, the proviso says, it would be because the properties characteristic of natural kinds must have an identity-influence over the kind members. I present in addition serious problems posed by outlining such identity bearing properties. In the second part of the thesis, I argue that function based explanations concerned with diseased organisms - if we construe such organisms as being members of natural kinds - should illuminate positive causes for the symptoms and pathological behaviours they exhibit. We could obtain such function-based explanations, I suggest, if we interpret the functioning of biological items as the manifesting of causal powers. Against the background of the Humean vs. anti-Humean debate on causation, I show that Nancy Cartwright's capacities are a plausible variant for the powers at work in 'pathological' functioning. I argue that one could track down these capacities if one viewed healthy organisms as nomological machines, in the sense in which Cartwright understands this notion. I also suggest that capacities are necessary in order to vindicate general and, more importantly, singular causal claims involved in medical diagnosis and hence to found satisfactory functional explanations.

Abstract:
Several outcome tools have been developed to measure physical functioning in pediatric orthopedic patients. One such tool, the Activities Scale for Kids (ASK), allows assessment of physical functioning in the community in 5-to 15-year-olds. Previous validation of the ASK showed a significant difference in scores according to global ratings of disability. In this study, the ASK was administered to children without musculoskeletal disability to determine how normal respondents scored. ASK questionnaires were distributed to 137 children and 122 (89%) were returned. Normal children scored quite high, with a mean summary score of 93.12 (SD 6.45). This score differs significantly from the mean summary score for children with mild disabilities as determined in previous studies of disability (P = 0.005).

Amor, Maryann. "The functions of invocations of YHWH in 1 Kings 1-2." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/26017.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1 Kings 1-2 King David’s impending death divides the monarchy over which of his two sons, Adonijah or Solomon, should be the future king. At this pivotal moment one might expect YHWH to reveal who should take over after David, as YHWH had done before (1 Sam 9:1-10:1; 16:1-13); however, YHWH is silent and the human characters take the lead. Nevertheless, YHWH has not disappeared completely from 1 Kings 1-2 because, as the narrative unfolds, YHWH is invoked twenty-four times. Although this language has drawn some attention, with scholars arguing that it either adds theological validation to the characters’ actions or re"ects a theological perspective that assumes that YHWH acts behind the scenes, there is more that might be said regarding its function in the narratives. In this study, I adopt narrative criticism to undertake a close reading of 1 Kings 1-2 that pays particular attention to how characters and the narrator use invocations of YHWH and the events in the plot that prompt or result from this language. I argue that invocations of YHWH have a number of functions in 1 Kings 1-2, with the function of characters’ invocations being particularly dependent on the identities of the characters, their relationships, and the narrative contexts in which they participate.

Paynter, Helen Elizabeth. "Reduced laughter : seriocomic features and their functions in the book of Kings." Thesis, University of Bristol, 2015. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.681729.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores how the interpretation of Kings might be enlightened by applying a hermeneutic developed from the work of Mikhail Bakhtin, a Russian literary critic. Bakhtin demonstrated how the social construct of carnival has made its way into some literature, which he terms seriocomic. Diagnostic criteria for seriocomic literature are: violation of linguistic norms; inversion of hierarchy and oxymoronic combinations; the fool and 'masking'; crowning/decrowning; 'odd feasts'; grotesque and scatological elements; profanation; and fantasticality. Application of these diagnostic features to the book of Kings reveals a florid outburst of seriocomic features within the central (northern) texts of the book. There are some unresolved 'enigmas' in the book of Kings, including the surprising prominence of the nation of Aram; the dubious ethical content of some of the prophets' actions; and I Kings 19: 16-17, where Elijah is commanded to anoint Hazael, Jehu and Elisha. The proposed hermeneutic helps resolve these enigmas. I Kings 19: 16-17 opens an inclusio which closes in II Kings 13. Within this inclusio, certain important themes are developed, including the subversion of the prophetic role, and the subversion of the nations of Aram, Israel and Judah. Additionally, another literary device is identified, which helps to address the other two enigmas, the mise-en-abyme (literary mirroring). In the case of Elijah and Elisha, repetitions of circumstance draw our attention to compare the two men. The seriocomic features of the text subvert the reader's attitude to Elisha, and then by shadowing, scorn is diverted towards Elijah. Similarly there is a complex web of symmetries, pairs, mirrors and parallels between the nations of Aram, Israel and Judah. The text repeatedly directs the reader's scorn and mirth towards Aram, but on each occasion the narrative turns, and disdain is diverted to Israel, and thence to Judah

Göth, Nilsson Annika. "Urban kids- Funktionskläder för tuffa miljöer." Thesis, Malmö högskola, Teknik och samhälle, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:mau:diva-20457.

Abstract:
AbstractUrban kids- Functional apparel for rough environmentsUrban kids is functional apparel for city children. The aim for this project is to develop functional clothes for the autumn and the winter season which provides a contrast to the designs presented today by outdoor and sports companies. The target group is fashion oriented city parents that do not hesitate to pay a little extra for a product representing their life style. This project provides a foundation of information to support the idea that it is possible to design technically functional outer wear for children without the sporty look.By using brainstorming and a mood board, a picture collage which gives the essence of the product, the concept “rocky playfulness” was developed. This concept is a contrast to the sporty expression.Throughout the whole project the design process has been the guide to reach the goal. This means that the project started with a primary research on materials, sustainable issues and eco-certificate, competitors, safety and guidelines for children’s wear and requirements from the user and the target group. The process continued by brainstorming and sketching in order to present three concepts. By evaluation using a function analysis one final concept was chosen for further processing. The result is a jacket and a pair of trousers as shell garments in order to use it a longer period of time during the season. The parts of the clothes mostly exposed, are enhanced with stronger, more hardwearing fabric. The choice of colors is black. This is due to the inspiration by a rocky attitude where black is often seen, but it is however not the only reason. Black is a more genderneutral color suitable for both boys and girls. It is also a practical color considering that dirt doesn´t appear as clearly as if the garment had a brighter color. One other important aspect of this project is to use material coherent with recycling and a sustainableway of thinking, focusing on finding functional material which supports this. During the research the material Eco Storm, from the Japanese manufacturer Teijin, was found. It is a polyestermembrane with an outer fabric made of recycled polyester. The conclusion of this project is that it is possible to produce/design functional wear with an urban feeling. This is in itself nothing new, it has been used in adult clothing, but the difference is that the technical function materials are excluded in the children’s wear. With Urban kids this is now also an option for the children.

Aucker, W. B. "Putting Elisha in his place : genre, coherence, and narrative function in 2 Kings 2-8." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/18488.

Full text
Abstract:
Argues that, against the contexts of confused royal identities, the co-mingling of the northern and southern kingdoms, and the anonymity of the weak king of Israel, the prophet Elisha in 2 Kings 2-8 is portrayed in a manner both royal and divine, performing deeds more typical of the king and YHWH. These deeds include the provision of food, healing, restoration, protection and security. As the final northern prophet in Kings. Elisha holds out the promise of YHWH's presence in a series of stories in which we find no direct speech from YHWH. The answer to the question raised in 2 Kgs 2.14, 'Where now is YHWH God of Elijah?' is answered in 2 Kgs 8.1-6: the great deeds of Elisha are the great deeds of YHWH. The portrayal of this prophet with divine and royal characteristics provides textual coherence to a set of narratives often viewed as disparate, based on the wide variety of form and content which they manifest. Part I (chapters 1-2) establishes the need for the present study. Chapter 1 argues that an examination of literary coherence in the Elisha narratives is overdue. Literary studies have run into some trouble in the book of Kings and the Elisha narrative has proved particularly difficult in this regard. It is asserted that the recent scholarly re-appraisal of Legende as a narrative category, the indistinct borders between Sage, Legende and historical narrative, the uncertainty of oral transmission given the presence of a written text, and the placing of the northern prophetic narratives at the heart of a book ostensibly about kings, pave the way for the present investigation. Chapter 2 provides a theoretical examination of coherence. While the use of the term 'coherence' has increased in biblical studies over the last twenty years, the field has not reflected adequately upon the question, 'What is coherence?' Therefore, chapter 2 looks to the fields of textlinguistics and poetics to provide tools for reflection upon this important question. We conclude that coherence may be viewed variously as 'discourse topic', 'global intention', or 'mental representation'. The chapter closes with the adoption of a model for reading the Elisha narrative.

Lee, Boon-Hui A. "The narrative function of the Song of Moses in the contexts of Deuteronomy and Genesis-Kings." Thesis, University of Gloucestershire, 2010. http://eprints.glos.ac.uk/2123/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Song of Moses is acknowledged to be one of the most difficult texts to interpret within the book of Deuteronomy. Substantial effort has been put in to determine the Song's origin in terms of its dating and reason for composition. But more scholars are now seeing the need to relate the Song to its immediate context. However, the recent contributions to this topic show the need for a closer examination of the Song's narrative function, not only in Deuteronomy but also in its larger context in Genesis-Kings. Understanding the Song's function in this large corpus necessitates the way in which it relates to Deuteronomic themes such as the YHWHIsrael relationship, Torah, worship, and kingship. This thesis examines the theological and hermeneutical function of the Song in Deuteronomy and GenesisKings in their final forms. As a prophetic criticism of Israel, it focuses its audiences' attention on the central command of the Torah, the moral issue of covenant-keeping, and Israel's vocation as witness to the nations, resulting in a theology of history for all nations. With reference to Deuteronomy, the Song expresses the heart of the book. With reference to Genesis-Kings, it gives us a sense of beginning and closure to the history of the people of YHWH in terms of Israel's primeval past and future hope respectively.

Abstract:
In this paper, top-down and bottom-up processing were studied regarding their effect on speech-in-noise. Three cognitive functions were also studied (divided attention, executive functioning, and semantic comprehension), and the effect they have on the speech processing and on each other. The research questions asked were if a difference in speech-in noise perception can be observed regarding the different levels of top-down and bottom-up support, if speech-in-noise is related to any of the researched cognitive abilities, and if there exists any correlation between these abilities. The method is a within-subject experimental design, consisting of four different tests: PASAT, to measure attention, LIT, to measure semantic comprehension, TMT, to measure executive functioning and SIN, to measure speech-in noise. The results showed a significant difference between top-down and bottom-up processing, a significant difference between top-down processing in decreasing and increasing conditions could also be seen. A negative correlation between the benefit of top-down support and the semantic comprehension task was found. Regarding the cognitive abilities a few correlations were found; the semantic comprehension task had a positive correlation to both the central executive task and the attentional task, the attentional task had a negative correlation to the central executive task, and both of the central executive subtasks had a positive correlation to each other. Most of the findings were expected, built on earlier cognitive hearing theories and studies.

Abstract:
In this Thesis, we present a new cosmological analysis of cluster counts, exploiting the AMICO KiDS-DR3 catalogue (Maturi et al. 2019), which is asample of photometrically-selected galaxy clusters, built up through the use of the cluster detection algorithm called Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) (Bellagamba et al. 2018), on the third data release of the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS; de Jong et al. 2017). The catalogue contains 7988 candidate galaxy clusters, in the redshift range z∈[0.1,0.8], on an effective area of 377 deg2. We develop a method to assign a statistical weight to each object in the catalogue, by deriving the selection function of the sample from a mock catalogue. Exploiting the results of the weak-lensing analysis provided by Bellagamba et al. (2019), we derive the masses of the objects. Then we develop two cosmological pipelines in order to retrieve in a ΛCDM Universe the constraints on the matter density parameter, Ωm, the normalization of the power spectrum, σ8, and the cluster normalization condition parameter, S8=σ8(Ωm/0.3)0.5, fixing the other parameters at the values obtained by Planck Collab. (2018). In order to accomplish this task, we introduce a new model for the cluster counts. Subsequently, we implement in the analysis a peculiar source of uncertainty, namely the super sample covariance, aiming at accounting for systematics that intrinsically affects our data. We derive the following constraints: Ωm= 0.28+0.01−0.01, σ8= 0.85+0.02−0.01, S8= 0.82+0.01−0.01, which are consistent with ΛCDM predictions, and competitive, in terms of uncertainties, with results of state-of-the-art cluster number count analyses.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part, we study a class of special functions Aik (y), k = 2, 4, 6, ··· generalising the classical Airy function Ai(y) to higher orders and in the second part, we apply expressions and properties of Ai4(y) to spectral problem of a specific operator. The first part is however motivated by latter part. We establish regularity properties of Aik (y) and particularly show that Aik (y) is smooth, bounded, and extends to the complex plane as an entire function, and obtain pointwise bounds on Aik (y) for all k. Some analytic properties of Aik (y) are also derived allowing one to express Aik (y) as a finite sum of certain generalised hypergeometric functions. We further obtain full asymptotic expansions of Aik (y) and their first derivative Ai'(y) both for y > 0 and for y < 0. Using these expansions, we derive expressions for the negative real zeroes of Aik (y) and Ai'(y). Using expressions and properties of Ai4(y), we extensively study spectral properties of a non-local operator H whose physical interpretation is the massless relativistic quartic anharmonic oscillator in one dimension. Various spectral results for H are derived including estimates of eigenvalues, spectral gaps and trace formula, and a Weyl-type asymptotic relation. We study asymptotic behaviour, analyticity, and uniform boundedness properties of the eigenfunctions Ψn(x) of H. The Fourier transforms of these eigenfunctions are expressed in two terms, one involving Ai4(y) and another term derived from Ai4(y) denoted by Āi4(y). By investigating the small effect generated by Āi4(y) this work shows that eigenvalues λn of H are exponentially close, with increasing n Ε N, to the negative real zeroes of Ai4(y) and those of its first derivative Ai'4(y) arranged in alternating and increasing order of magnitude. The eigenfunctions Ψ(x) are also shown to be exponentially well-approximated by the inverse Fourier transform of Ai4(|y| - λn) in its normalised form.

Abstract:
Magister Artium - MA
This thesis .investigates the function of a topicalized constituent .in the narrative non-direct speech texts .in 2 Kings. Many traditional BH grammarians described the :function of a topicalized constituent as "emphasis". Recent BH grammarians pointed out that extralinguistic factors like the total communicative context should also be considered in the description of a function for a topicalized constituent. The shift from the structural to a more pragmatic approach is illustrated in this study. The pragmatic approach proved to be not only possible, but also advantageous to the study of function in BH. The aim of this study was to test the viability and results of the various theories and categories of the BH linguists. This study also researched whether their linguistic approaches are indeed an improvement on the descriptions as defined by the traditional grammarians. In other words, to see whether and in which way more recent studies of BH could aid the understanding of the function of a topicalized constituent in BH word order. The methodology utilized in this study is briefly outlined as follows: 1. This study examined the description of word order in terms of the traditional and more recent approaches. The categories used to describe the function of a topicalized constituent were our main focus. At the end we compiled a theoretical frame of reference that we regard as representative of modem attempts to acquire a more refined comprehension of BH word order. A theoretical linguistic framework was formulated which could be used in our description of a sentence in BH in 2 · Kings. This attempt could be described as eclectic because it used the diverse perceptions from the various linguistic approaches. Richter's theoretical linguistic framework (with its limitations) together with contributions of Van der Merwe, Buth and Gross were used as a basis for the description of the sentences. 3. Sentences were analysed systematically and holistically at the different levels of description, namely morphology, morphosyntax, sentence syntax, semantics and pragmatics. Because of the difficulty in defining semantics and with pragmatics still in disarray, this study defined some semantic-pragmatic concepts it worked with. 4. In the description of sentences we incorporated and tested the viability of the different categories of various grammarians. By carefully considering the context of each sentence, this study posed the question: which, if any; of the categories could adequately describe the semantic-pragmatic function of a topicalized constituent in 2 Kings.

Frännhag, Helena. "Interpretive Functions of Adjectives in English : A Cognitive Approach." Doctoral thesis, Centre for Languages and literature, Lund University, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-10194.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a theoretical discussion of meaning creation in general, and interpretive functions of English adjectives in particular. The discussion rests on a dynamic view of meaning and interpretation, according to which there are no fixed linguistics meanings – not even for single lexemes. Instead of symbolising meaning in a more or less static and ‘eternal’ fashion, linguistic items are assumed to effect the creation of meaning and to shape meaning dynamically in the particular communicative event at hand, from some kind of underlying ‘raw material’ (also referred to as purport and schemas). It is suggested that the interpretive functions of linguistic items – that is the effects that such items have in the creation of meaning – may be approached in two main ways, namely from the formal and from the semantic point of view respectively. Effects triggered by the form of a certain item are referred to as formal interpretive functions (FIFs), and effects prompted by the meaning created for the form are referred to as semantic interpretive functions (SIFs). FIFs are claimed to be the same for all items – namely to activate, delimit and shape underlying purport and schemas – whereas SIFs are said to differ between items, and also for one and the same item on different occasions of use. It is furthermore suggested that FIFs affect the creation of meaning for the relevant item itself, whereas SIFs affect the creation of meaning for other items, on any level of conceptual organisation. For instance, a form such as tall typically activates and delimits purport and schemas to do with some kind of extension (notably in space), thereby shaping a basic word meaning tall. The meaning thus created may in turn affect other meaning in the larger context. For instance, tall, as created in default interpretation of a tall man entered the room, affects the meaning of the noun phrase a tall man as a whole, in that it specifies the interpreter’s conception of a certain something that entered a specific room. In this case, the relevant SIF is thus to specify. Other SIFs suggested for adjectives are kind identification, element identification, identity provision and stipulation. The aim of the thesis is two-fold: on the one hand to outline a suggestive theory of meaning creation and interpretive function in general, and, on the other hand, to present a theoretical discussion of adjective functions in particular, with the ultimate goal of providing a general framework from which more specific models for in-depth empirical research can be obtained.

Abstract:
As Shakespeare composed the three history plays discussed here, English culture faced a shift in its dominant belief system from an animistic perspective that valued nature and superstition to a humanistic perspective based on reason and personal relationships. In Richard II, Shakespeare creates characters that fall on either side of this divide, and he shows humanism triumph over animism when Henry deposes Richard. In 1 Henry IV, Shakespeare shows that this binary is not so easily reconciled, and Hal (the future Henry V) creates a dual nature that subsumes the tenets of both animism and humanism. After the death of his father and his rejection of Falstaff in 2 Henry IV, Hal demonstrates that the only solution to the humanism/animism debate is to entirely reject the tenets of both and, instead, blend the two viewpoints together. The result is a newly formed conception of kingship and a hero-king.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the identities and functions of late Anglo-Saxon royal agents (c. 950-1066), focusing on bishops and ealdormen. To establish who royal agents were, the thesis explores the family relationships among the leading men in the ecclesiastical and secular spheres, especially those linking men administering ealdordoms to the senior clergy. It also examines the offices of royal agents in late Anglo-Saxon England and argues that the duties of ecclesiastical and secular officials were not fundamentally different. While traceable kin networks appear among senior clerics and among high secular officials, few familial links connect the senior clergy to ealdormen. Thus, this thesis divides these kin-groups into those who gained secular offices, 'lay families', and those who sought power through the ecclesiastical positions, 'church families'. The analysis of the strategies adopted by 'lay families' and 'church families' to secure and maintain political power indicates how the aristocracy served both the king and their own ambitions in the governance of late Anglo-Saxon England. Although these royal agents came from different family groups, their obligations as royal agents appear remarkably similar with the exception of their military functions. This information provides a better understanding of the pool of men from whom English kings generally chose their officials, how rulers may have kept this group from becoming too small, and what was expected of these royal agents. The lack of (recorded) nepotism across episcopal and secular lines provides a more nuanced understanding of the aristocracy in Anglo-Saxon England. Furthermore, by offering an examination of both the identities and the functions of royal agents, this thesis provides a better understanding of the late Anglo-Saxon kingdom and its administration. In addition it creates a clearer picture of the aristocracy, the king, and the Church as well as the relationships between all three.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with system identification and modeling of fractional transfer functions using bounded and uncertain frequency responses. Therefor, both of fractional differentiation and integration definitions are extended into intervals. Set membership approaches are then applied to estimate coefficients and derivative orders as intervals. These methods are applied to estimate certain Linear Time Invariant systems (LTI), uncertain LTI systems and Linear Parameter Varying systems (LPV). They are notably adopted to model driver's dynamics, since most of studies on one or several individuals shave shown that the collected reactions are not identical and are varying from an experiment to another

Abstract:
Design fixation is a phenomenon experienced by professional designers and engineering design students that stifles creativity and innovation through discouraging ideational productivity, fluency and diversity. During the design idea and concept generation phase of the design process, a reliance on perceptual surface feature similarities between design artefacts increases the likelihood of design fixation leading to design duplication. Psychologists, educators and designers have become increasingly interested in creative idea generation processes that encourage innovation and entrepreneurial outcomes. However, there is a notable lack of collaborative research between psychology, education and engineering design particularly on inductive reasoning of undergraduate engineering students in higher education. The data gathered and analysed for this study provides an insight into property inference decision-making preferences and decision switching (SWITCH) patterns of engineering undergraduates under similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] and category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. For this psychology experiment, property induction tasks were devised using abstract shapes in a triad configuration. Participants (N = 180), on an undergraduate engineering programme in London, observed a triad of shapes with a target shape more similar-looking to one of two given shapes. Factors manipulated for this experiment included category alignment, category group, property type and target shape. Despite the cognitive development and maturation stage of undergraduate engineers (adults) in higher education, this study identified similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] to play a significant role during inductive reasoning relative to the strength of category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. In addition to revealing the property inference decision-making preferences of a sample of undergraduate engineers (N = 180), two types of switch classification and two types of non-switch classification (SWITCH) were found and named SIM_NCC, SIM-Salient, Reverse_CAT and CAT_Switching. These different classifications for property inference switching and non-switching presented a more complex pattern of decision-making driven by the relative strength between similarity-based inductive judgements [SIM] and category-based inductive judgements [CAT]. The conditions that encouraged CAT_Switching is of particular interest to design because it corresponds to inference decision switching that affirms the sharing of properties between dissimilar-looking shapes designated as category members, i.e., in a conflicting category alignment condition (CoC). For CAT_Switching, this study found a significant interaction between a particular set of conditions that significantly increased the likelihood of property inference decisions switching to affirm the sharing of properties between dissimilar-looking shapes. Stimuli conditions that combined a conflicting category alignment condition (where dissimilar-looking shapes belong to the same category) with category specificity, a causal property and a target shape with merged (or blended) perceptual surface features significantly increased the likelihood of a property inference decision switching. CAT_Switching has important implications for greater ideational productivity, fluency and diversity to discourage design fixation within the conceptual design space. CAT_Switching conditions could encourage more creative design transformations with alternative design functions through inductive inferences that generalise between dissimilar artefact designs. The findings from this study led to proposing a Cartesian view of the concept design space to represent the possibilities for greater movements through flexible and expanding category boundaries to encourage conceptual combinations, greater ideational fluency and greater ideational diversity within a configuration design space. This study has also created a platform for further research into property inference decision-making, ideational diversity and category boundary flexibility under stimuli conditions that encourage designers and design students to make inductive generalisations between dissimilar domains of knowledge through a greater emphasis on causal relations and semantic networks.

Abstract:
In this PhD thesis several subjects are studied regarding the following topics: formulas for nonlinear control systems on free Lie algebras, stabilizability of nonlinear control systems, digital arithmetic algorithms, and nonlinear Fredholm integral equations with delay. The first and principal topic is mainly related with a problem known as the continuous Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff exponents. We propose a calculus to deal with formal nonautonomous ordinary differential equations evolving on the algebra of formal series defined on an alphabet. We introduce and connect several (non)associative algebras as Lie, shuffle, zinbiel, pre-zinbiel, chronological (pre-Lie), pre-chronological, dendriform, D-I, and I-D. Most of those notions were also introduced into the universal enveloping algebra of a free Lie algebra. We study Chen series and iterated integrals by relating them with nonlinear control systems linear in control. At the heart of all the theory of Chen series resides a zinbiel and shuffle homomorphism that allows us to construct a purely formal representation of Chen series on algebras of words. It is also given a pre-zinbiel representation of the chronological exponential, introduced by A.Agrachev and R.Gamkrelidze on the context of a tool to deal with nonlinear nonautonomous ordinary differential equations over a manifold, the so-called chronological calculus. An extensive description of that calculus is made, collecting some fragmented results on several publications. It is a fundamental tool of study along the thesis. We also present an alternative demonstration of the result of H.Sussmann about coordinates of second kind using the mentioned tools. This simple and comprehensive proof shows that coordinates of second kind are exactly the image of elements of the dual basis of a Hall basis, under the above discussed homomorphism. We obtain explicit expressions for the logarithm of Chen series and the respective coordinates of first kind, by defining several operations on a forest of leaf-labelled trees. It is the same as saying that we have an explicit formula for the functional coefficients of the Lie brackets on a continuous Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff-Dynkin formula when a Hall basis is used. We apply those formulas to relate some noncommutative symmetric functions, and we also connect the monodromy map of a time-periodic nonlinear vector field with a truncation of the Chen logarithm. On the second topic, we study any system of two bodies rolling one over the other without twisting or slipping. By using the Chen logarithm expressions, the monodromy map of a flow and Lyapunov functions, we construct time-variant controls that turn the origin of a control system linear in control into a locally asymptotically stable equilibrium point. Stabilizers for control systems whose vector fields generate a nilpotent Lie algebra with degree of nilpotency · 3 are also given. Some examples are presented and Maple°c were implemented. The third topic, on appendix, concerns the construction of efficient algorithms for Digital Arithmetic, potentially for the implementation in microprocessors. The algorithms are intended for the computation of several functions as the division, square root, sines, cosines, exponential, logarithm, etc. By using redundant number representations and methods of Lyapunov stability for discrete dynamical systems, we obtain several algorithms (that can be glued together into an algorithm for parallel execution) having the same core and selection scheme in each iteration. We also prove their domains of convergence and discuss possible extensions. The last topic, also on appendix, studies the set of solutions of a class of nonlinear Fredholm integral equations with general delay. The delay is of functional character modelled by a continuous lag function. We ensure existence and uniqueness of a continuous (positive) solution of such equation. Moreover, under additional conditions, it is obtained the Fr´echet differentiability of the solution with respect to the lag function.

The purpose of the study was to investigate effects of different kinds of exercise intervention: thirty minutes each time, 3 days a week, 10 weeks of duration on cardiopulmonary function in junior high girl students. Training intensity was approximately 130+5 beat/min heart rate. Sixty-four subjects were divided into control (CG) and three experimental groups. Three experimental groups included the 12min run–walk (EG1), rope jumping (EG2) and new style gymnastics groups (EG3). Eight hundred meter run-walk was chosen as a cardiovascular test item. Data obtained before and after the test were analyzed through SPSS statistic software. One - way ANOVA was used to analyze the different kinds of exercise homogeneity. Two-way ANOVA mixed design was used to test the interaction between the different kinds of exercise and groups. Paired t test and Turkey post hoc t – comparison were used to analyze data if there was a significant difference. The alpha level was set at .05. The findings are as follows: 1. Three experimental groups had better score of cardiovascular endurance than CG after 10 weeks of different kinds of exercise intervention. The post training cardiovascular endurance was better than that of pre-training in three groups. Different exercises invention had effect on cardiovascular endurance in junior high girl students. 2. EG1 had better score of cardiovascular endurance than EG3, however, no difference was found between EG1 and EG3, EG2 and EG3, respectively. 3. Through the result of the study, we found long-term engagement in regular exercise training contributes to significant improvement of cardiovascular fitness of junior high girl students. The result of this research suggests that long-term engagement in regular exercise training contributes to significant improvement of cardiopulmonary function of junior high girl students. The results indicate the necessity of intervention of the training program during rainy days.

ABSTRACT The Quality Function Deployment is a method what is transmitting consumer needs to parts and a stardand what is designing product quality. Two Kinds of Quality Conception represent the relation of preceding and behind process in quality. If we can integrated QFD and Two Kinds of Quality Conception, then the influence of preceding process could be grasped rapidly. In this research we try to use the third stage production process program HoQ in QFD, to calculate weight of relationship, rank importance and target value of process capability index. Then we use The Diagnosis Theory with Two Kinds of Process Capability Index to figure out the relation of the preceding process and the behind process, except to verify the quality responsible in process design. Specially, we can control the process, forecast quality and diagnosis quality of stage. The results can correct the target of value of process capability index, also can afford more news of judgments and decisions to feedback production process program HoQ. Promotion of the quality depends on the proper regulation management and applicable process quality evaluation. Process Capability Index (PCI) is a valid and convenient process evaluation tool, in which the manufacturing industries have continuously tried to adapt the PCI to an actual application and then to establish a suitable PCI evaluation model. In the actual analysis, it seems only to limit the standpoint of process technique and lack of the quantitative explanation of cost in persuasion of real quality promotion. The results of improvement to evaluation should improve the concept that can immediately reduce the product cost through the process improvement and promote the product competition ability in the market, which in turn will urge the top executive to deeply value the significance of quality improvement and support with all strength. This thesis makes use of Quadratic Loss Function concepts and the conduct of the basis of measuring the product quality by way of cost loss. Through a diagnosis theory of Two Kinds of Process Capability Index, the front and back process influence extent is evaluated with putting forward the whole process improvement mode. It is expected to achieve the following three goals: (1)Combining PCI and cost loss concept to analyze the process improvement performance and provide cost analysis for manager ; (2) Make use of Two Kinds of Process Capability Index theory to find the key of process improvement and the range of process capability promotion; (3)To establish a process analysis mode for matching an actual application of industry to present more economical performance . This thesis physically has identified the lithium battery’s manufacturing process as a target of study, which can put forward to the key of process improvement and the quantification of cost loss. After improvement action being taken, the results have clearly demonstrated that the process capability has already been promoted and the loss cost has also reduced. The present thesis has confirmed to meet the target of the expectation after inquiring into a physical identification through several individual cases.

Abstract of Essay This study takes news reporters’ clubs in Taichung City as an aspect of research which aims to make exploration into the function of local news reporters’ clubs. Adopting the channel of qualitative research, this study takes the in-depth interview method to discuss two significant issues: I. How do the local news reporters’ clubs affect the interaction between the local news reporters and source of news? (1) What role do the local news reporters’ clubs play in the course of the interaction between the local news reporters and source of news? (2) What is the interactive relation mode between the local news reporters and source of news? What are the factors to affect the interactive relation between the local news reporters and source of news? II. How do the local news reporters’ clubs affect the news production and what’s the development direction in the future? (1) How do the local news reporters’ clubs affect the press production? (2) What is the feasible direction for the development of local news reporters’ clubs? As to the role played by the local news reporters’ clubs in the course of the interaction between the local news reporters and source of news, we have found eight functions including an increase of social intellectuality, record of facts and avoidance of trouble, sieving of “begging” reporters, specialists’ training and cultivation, striving for autonomy of the press, professionalism of the press, propensity of news source, and exclusive reports. Among them, an increase of social intellectuality, record of facts and avoidance of trouble, specialists’ training and cultivation, and propensity of news source are four important findings by this study in the construct aspect of the press. In the interactive relation mode between the local news reporters and source of news, we have found that it can be classified into modes of “opposition” and “cooperation”, while a significant finding indicates that the interchange shall also include non-disclosure of the news for the latter one, more than just layout, time section and exposure of the news. For “assimilation”, it shows a high degree of difficulty, but small circle will be served as a collective “bribe” subject for the source of the news. As to the factors to affect the interactive relation between the local news reporters and source of news, we can make further exploration from attribute of news source, reporters’ personal attribute, non-coverage mission of local news reporters entitled by the media organization. For the attribute of news source, the finding indicates that news source establishes relation with reporters’ clubs with offering information allowance in high frequency, while the local news reporters are also inclined to make interaction with news resource by means of information allowance based on the requirements of layout. In the aspect of reporters’ personal attribute, our findings reveal that (1) local news reporters’ clubs receive subsidy from news source outlays that may bring impact on professional ethics and affect the interaction between one news reporter and news source. (2) In the aspect of electoral and political party news, party affiliation has certain effect on the interaction between news reporters and news source. (3) Females may generate better interaction with news source towards soft news such as cultures and education. (4) Those news reporters with longer seniority and better professional background may interact with news source easily. In non-coverage mission of local news reporters entitled by the media organization, i.e. business-coverage-in-one, local news reporters bear enormous pressure from advertising solicitation and superiors’ request that may impact the professional ethics and causes a deprivation of freedom of the press. For the aspect on impact by the local news reporters’ clubs on the news production and the development direction in the future, findings reveal that (1) news source always offers news reporters clubs the news information initiatively that may train more “civil servants of the press”, even though it helps save news information time for local news reporters. (2) More reliance on news source to get news information may generate the propensity of news source and cause the inactivity to gain access to news source from the news reporters’ clubs as well as reduce an access to the media. (3) A trend of news uniformity may cause a deprivation of freedom of the press. (4) Local news reporters’ clubs are still required to intensify the cultivation on professional accomplishments of the press, sieving of membership, internal convergence, regular re-election of the club affairs cadres, and regular inspection for raised funds in the future

Quality is fitness that means it can satisfy customer''s requirements. Using Quality Function Deployment(QFD)to transfer customer''s voice into quality characteristics and controlling the key quality characteristics thoroughly could produce high quality production. Traditional Shewhart control chart can be a independent oversee statistical tool for only one characteristic production process, therefore it''s preventable function is limited. The cause-selecting control chart from diagnosis theory with two kinds of quality, not only can control the production processes but can tell us where the problems are. It also can make difference from quality responsible of present production process or last one, and take correct actions right away. In this research we try to use the third stage production processes program HOQ in QFD, to calculate weight of relationship matrix and cor- relative matrix. In order to get items and objective value of process key quality factor and its correlative intensity. Combine with cause-selecting control chart of diagnosis theory with two kinds of quality in practical production processes to verify the objective value and its correlative intensity, to ensure effective oversee and diagnosis unusual situations can feedback correct in time. Abstract:
To maintain consistently low riding-eights, many jockeys engage in repetitive cycles of rapid, short-term weight loss, termed "wasting". The physical and psychological effects of "wasting" are not well understood, although several recent studies suggest that, at least in the short-term, they may be numerous, and with any one of them having a potentially detrimental effect on both the health and riding performance of jockeys. The major aims of the research reported were to investigate the weight-management experiences of jockeys in Australia, and to examine a range of cognitive and other psychological effects of rapid weight loss in this professional athlete population. The methodological framework used to address these aims incorporated both quantitative and qualitative techniques. Four focused case studies illustrated that cognitive responses to weight fluctuations and competition were generally idiosyncratic, with variations within individuals across a range of cognitive functions and testing conditions. The exception to this finding was attentional processing speed, which appeared to be impaired in response to weight loss in most cases. Collectively, the results of the three studies indicate that the need for wasting, and the lack of safe and effective options to meet this need, continue to be pervasive and problematic facets of life for professional kockeys, in terms of their effects on psychological well-being and cognitive function.

This study investigates mathematics for teaching, specifically in the case of functions at the grade 10 level. One teacher was studied to gain insights into the mathematical problem-solving a teacher does as he/she goes about his/her work. The analysis of data shows that the mathematical problems that this particular teacher confronts as he goes about his work of teaching can be classified as defining, explaining, representing and questioning. The resources that he draws on to sustain and drive this practice can be described as coming from aspects of mathematics, his own teaching experience and the curriculum with which he works. Of interest in this study are those features of mathematical problemsolving in teaching as intimated by other studies, particularly restructuring tasks and working with learners’ ideas; which are largely absent in this practice. This report argues that these latter aspects of mathematical problem-solving in teaching are aligned to a practice informed by the wider notion of mathematical proficiency. The report concludes with a discussion of why and how external intervention is needed to assist with shifting practices if mathematical proficiency is a desired outcome, as well as with reflections on the study and its methodology.

Abstract:
This study is designed to understand how investors risk preferences change, when faced by financial crisis. Option prices implied densities provide information about market movements and risk preferences. The data used are European call options prices on the DJIA with a time to maturity of four weeks. This paper obtains the risk aversion estimates by the extraction of options implied risk neutral densities and their translation to real world densities, applied to three crisis : Dotcom bubble in 2001; Subprime mortgage in 2008 and European sovereign debt in 2011. RND is achieved by the use of two parametric methods: mixture of lognormal densities (MLN); and generalised beta distribution of the second kind (GB2). The risk transformation procedure from RND to RWD (real world densities) is achieved by applying the power utility function. The RND empirical results imply that the GB2 method is disregarded due to inferior quality whilst the MLN produces results of higher uncertainty and expected future results of index levels corrected downward. The risk aversion estimates obtained from the RWD generation process do not present any evident pattern of evolution from a stable financial period to one of financial shock. It is also important to mention that for some periods the risk aversion reached negative values. This is a surprising result due to existent theoretical assumption of positive risk aversion. Overall, this study documents inconclusive results. Nevertheless, several important topics are left for future research. Interesting developments would consist: either replicating this study considering more expiration dates, bearing in mind that too many periods would imply an extremely generalised risk aversion estimate that would be counterproductive for achieving the objective of this paper; apply another method from the available literature; or testing the negative estimates with more sophisticated models that are beyond the focus of this paper.

Abstract:
1 Abstract The dissertation Theoretical tools for categorization and functional explanations of relations in language is focused on linguistic categorization from the perspective of empirical gram- matical research. The primary aim is to present the theoretical and practical potential for the investigation of grammatical categories, stressing functional explanations of why cer- tain language structures are the way they are. The text is divided into two parts. (i) The first two chapters are devoted to the theoretical and methodological foundations of empirical linguistic research (including issues of metalanguage, language comparison, discreteness and gradience). Particular emphasis is placed on functional-evolutionary approaches, which describe grammar in interconnection with language use, and more specifically on func- tional explanations by means of frequency. (ii) In the following three chapters, the potential of corpus-based research is demonstrated in accordance with the principles adopted in (i). It is applied to the linguistic categories of possession and adjective comparison in Czech. Possession in Czech is described with regard to hypotheses based on statistical tendencies in language use. The main results of the research revealed the relationship between frequency of use and the animacy hierarchy,...
