Loew, Katharina. Special Effects and German Silent Film. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463725231.

Full text
Abstract:
In recent decades, special effects have become a major new area of research in cinema studies. For the most part, they have been examined as spectacles or practical tools. In contrast, Special Effects and German Silent Film, foregrounds their function as an expressive device and their pivotal role in cinema’s emergence as a full-fledged art. Special effects not only shaped the look of iconic films like Nosferatu (1922) or Metropolis (1927), but they are central to a comprehensive understanding of German silent film culture writ large. This book examines special effects as the embodiment of a “techno-romantic” paradigm that seeks to harness technology – the epitome of modern materialism – as a means for accessing a spiritual realm. Employed to visualize ideas and emotions in a medium-specific way, special effects thus paved the way for film art.

Postoutenko, Kirill, ed. Totalitarian Communication. Bielefeld, Germany: transcript Verlag, 2010. http://dx.doi.org/10.14361/9783839413937.

Full text
Abstract:
Totalitarianism has been an object of extensive communicative research since its heyday: already in the late 1930s, such major cultural figures as George Orwell or Hannah Arendt were busy describing the visual and verbal languages of Stalinism and Nazism. After the war, many fashionable trends in social sciences and humanities (ranging from Begriffsgeschichte and Ego-Documentology to Critical Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis) were called upon to continue this media-centered trend in the face of increasing political determination of the burgeoing field. Nevertheless, the integration of historical, sociological and linguistic knowledge about totalitarian society on a firm factual ground remains the thing of the future. This book is the first step in this direction. By using history and theory of communication as an integrative methodological device, it reaches out to those properties of totalitarian society which appear to be beyond the grasp of specific disciplines. Furthermore, this functional approach allows to extend the analysis of communicative practices commonly associated with fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and Soviet Union, to other locations (France, United States of America and Great Britain in the 1930s) or historical contexts (post-Soviet developments in Russia or Kyrgyzstan). This, in turn, leads to the revaluation of the very term »totalitarian«: no longer an ideological label or a stock attribute of historical narration, it gets a life of its own, defining a specific constellation of hierarchies, codes and networks within a given society.

Abstract:
The EHRA Book of Pacemaker, ICD and CRT Troubleshooting assists device specialists in tackling both common and unusual situations that that they may encounter during daily practice. Taking a case-based approach, it examines pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators and cardiac resynchronisation therapy. Much more than just a technical manual of device algorithms, the cases help readers to consolidate their technical knowledge, and improve their reasoning and observation skills so they are able to tackle device troubleshooting with confidence. The 70 cases are arranged in three sections by increasing levels of difficulty to walk readers through all the skills and knowledge they need in an easy to use and structured format. Each case contains a short clinical description and a device tracing followed by a multiple choice question. Answers are supplied with detailed annotations of the tracing and an in-depth discussion of the case, highlighting practical hints and tips as well as providing an overview of the technical function of devices. A useful summary of principal device features and functions is also included.

Graham, Christopher D. Investigating the psychology of assistive device use in ALS: Suggestions for improving adherence and engagement. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780198757726.003.0012.

Full text
Abstract:
In ALS, assistive devices—such as wheelchairs, augmentative, and alternative communication devices (AAC) and environmental controls—are often used to compensate for the functional impairments caused by the condition. These devices may help maintain meaningful functioning and help preserve quality of life. Yet adherence to and uptake of such devices is sub-optimal. Drawing on the literature from ALS and other diseases, this chapters explores the psychosocial challenges of assistive device use, and factors that might affect usage—cognitive impairment and mood, threats to identity, social context, illness adjustment/acceptance, and the desire to maintain control over one’s health care. Methods that clinicians can use to intervene to improve non-adherence are then suggested—bio-psychosocial assessment (formulation) informed by cognitive and mood screens, voice-banking for appropriate accents in AAC devices, increasing illness acceptance via counselling, or acceptance and commitment therapy, and empathetic clinician-facilitated discussions with patient-significant other dyads and families.

Abstract:
This article describes a new circuit device, developed in collaboration with scientists at Sandia National Laboratories, based on treed Gaussian processes (TGP). The circuit devices under study are bipolar junction transistors, which are used to amplify electrical current. To aid with the design of the device, a computer model predicts its peak output as a function of the input dosage and a number of design parameters. The methodology also involves a novel sequential design procedure to generate data to fit the emulator. Both physical and computer simulation experiments are performed, and the results show that the TGP model can be useful for spatial data and semiparametric regression in the context of a computer experiment for designing a circuit device, for sequential design of (computer) experiments, sequential robust local optimization, validation, calibration, and sensitivity analysis.

Ž. Jovanović, Vladimir. FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH. Filozofski fakultet Niš, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.46630/fen.2021.

Full text
Abstract:
The book Functional English can be viewed as an introductory reading in the domain of functional language, or language used in order to perform certain communicative purposes. Functional language is a concept normally connected with foreign language learners of lower levels and with problems in achieving the designated standards in terms of the four basic language skills. The book is meant to provide a description of the subject matter of Functional English by establishing the basics, as well as the main features and elements of this linguistic domain. The overall objective of the book is to help with the understanding of existing language features sometimes taken for granted, and which may cause communication difficulties. Simultaneously, its ambition is to enable all the interested parties to reaffirm the foundations and build on the existing language repository, in an attempt to achieve a higher level of competence in English used to perform different communicative functions. The term practical language skills within Functional English entails the ability to formulate or articulate one’s communicative message, as well as the ability to interpret correctly or relay clearly to other parties any verbal material relevant to the process of communication. Moreover, being competent in Functional English means being able to select the adequate communication channel or method, where the key factors are the linguistic devices employed, the correlation between the language used and the intended goal, as well as the context of situation and its relation to the audience or the participants in the verbal interaction.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of transcatheter valve therapeutic modalities has reignited interest in the anatomy of the valvular complexes. Indeed, this knowledge is crucial for individuals who are involved in transcatheter valve therapies. The importance of anatomy for procedure indications, contraindications, performance, and device development are tremendous and cannot be overemphasized. Comprehension of the anatomy is the first step toward successful transcatheter valve therapy. This knowledge should be coupled with the ability to view and understand the valvular complex using different imaging modalities. The ability to have a three-dimensional understanding of the valvular component and its relation to the other cardiac structures is key in performing transcatheter valve procedures. This chapter discusses the aortic valve and the mitral valve complexes and reviews a novel way of understanding left-sided heart valve anatomy using multiple imaging modalities.

Abstract:
Higher-function words such as complementizers, negation, functional prepositions, definiteness particles, comparative markers, and so forth, occurring to the left of their lexical category, are argued to be base-generated as complex left branches, rather than spelling out the main functional sequence. This is generalized to all (base-generated) pre-asymmetries and post-asymmetries and derived from the structure of the lexical entries of the function words, dispensing with idiosyncratic notational devices equivalent to [+ suffix] or [+ needs-to-move]. These complex left branches require a merge-XP operation, and the place of this operation in the algorithm of spellout-driven movement is discussed.

Full text
Abstract:
Image-based measurements of myocardial blood flow afford the assessment of coronary circulatory function. They reflect functional consequences of coronary stenoses, diffuse epicardial vessel disease and microvascular dysfunction and structural changes and thus provide a measure of the total ischemic burden. Measured flows contain therefore clinically important predictive information. Fundamental to flow measurements are the tissue tracer kinetics, their description through tracer kinetic models, high spatial and temporal resolution imaging devices and accurate extraction of radiotracer tissue concentrations from dynamically acquired images for estimating true flows from the tissue time activity curves. A large body of literature on measurements of myocardial blood flow exists for defining in humans normal values for flow at baseline and during hyperemic stress as well as for the myocardial flow reserve. The role of PET for flow measurements has been well established; initial results with modern SPECT devices are encouraging. Responses of myocardial blood flow to specific challenges like pharmacologic vasodilation and to sympathetic stimulation can uncover functional consequences of focal epicardial coronary stenoses, of conduit vessel disturbances and disease and impairments of microvascular function. Apart from risk stratification, flow measurements may allow detection of early preclinical disease, influence treatment strategies and identify therapy responses.

Abstract:
Upper airway obstruction (UAO) from any cause should be considered a life-threatening emergency. In a conscious patient, UAO may present as respiratory distress, stridor, dyspnoea, altered voice, cyanosis, cough, decreased or absent breath sounds, wheezing, the hand-to-the-throat choking sign in the case of a foreign body, facial swelling, and distended neck veins. The cause of UAO should be identified and airway management devices must be immediately available prior to any airway manipulation CT scan, flexible bronchoscopy, and pulmonary function tests should be performed to evaluate the cause and the extent of the obstruction. Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) patients are at increased risk of developing UAO. Endotracheal intubation, insertion of a supraglottic device, laser therapy, and endotracheal stents maybe life-saving

Abstract:
Close observation of various attachment systems in animal skins has revealed various exquisite multi-scale architectures for essential functions such as locomotion, crawling, mating, and protection from predators. Some of these adhesion systems of geckos and beetles have unique structural features (e.g. high-aspect ratio, tilted angle, and hierarchical nanostructure), resulting in mechanical interlocking mediated by van der Waals forces or liquid secretion (capillary force). In this chapter, we present an overview of recent advances in bio-inspired, artificial dry adhesives, and biomimetics in the context of nanofabrication and material properties. In addition, relevant bio-inspired structural materials, devices (clean transportation device, interlocker, biomedical skin patch, and flexible strain-gauge sensor) and microrobots are briefly introduced, which would shed light on future smart, directional, and reversible adhesion systems.

Abstract:
In this chapter Kasia M. Jaszczolt offers a pragmatic, contextualist account of the meaning of devices used for first-person reference that makes use of the post-Gricean idea of top-down modification of truth-conditional content. On this view, the indexical/non-indexical distinction becomes blurred because expressions on each side of the dichotomy can have indexical as well as non-indexical functions. She demonstrates how indexicality can be ‘pragmaticized’, and how the resulting ‘functional indexicals’ can be represented in her radical contextualist theory of Default Semantics.

Abstract:
Ventricular assist devices (VADs) have become a cornerstone of therapy in the management of end-stage heart failure, both as a means of bridging to cardiac transplantation and as destination therapy for long-term quality of life improvement. Responding to medical emergencies in patients with VADs poses numerous challenges to rapid response team (RRT) providers. Managing these patients requires basic understanding of VAD function and physiology and the multitude of complications that follow their implantation. Most healthcare professionals lack exposure to VADs, and although it may seem daunting, this chapter will provide a systematic approach of how to identify, troubleshoot, diagnose, and manage VAD-associated complications and provide emergency care for the VAD patient.

Abstract:
Neural prosthetics (neuroprostheses, neural prostheses) are devices or systems that influence the input and output of information in the brain. They modulate, bypass, supplement, or replace regions of the brain and its connections to the body that are damaged, dysfunctional, or lost from brain injury, congenital conditions, limb loss, or neurodegenerative disease. Neural prosthetics can generate, improve, or restore sensory, motor, and cognitive functions. Some prosthetics are implanted in the brain. Others are connected to it in brain–computer interfacing. This book describes auditory and visual prosthetics, deep brain and responsive neurostimulation, brain–computer interfaces, brain-to-brain interfaces, optogenetics, and memory prosthetics and discusses some of their neuroscientific and philosophical implications. The neuroscientific discussion focuses on how neural prosthetics can restore brain and bodily functions. The philosophical discussion focuses on how people with these prosthetics can benefit from or be harmed by them. It also focuses on how these devices and systems can lead to a better understanding of or change our attitudes about the brain–mind relation, identity, mental causation, and agency. The book considers the therapeutic, rehabilitative, and restorative potential of neural prosthetics in improving functional independence and quality of life for millions of people with disabling conditions.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses financing devices that, although performing an equivalent function to security interests, are not generally considered ‘security’ under English law. These devices fall into two main categories: those involving the retention and those involving the transfer of title. Such financing devices are often called ‘quasi-security’ interests, to acknowledge that their economic function, in ‘securing’ the performance of obligations, is the same as that of true ‘security’. The chapter also considers the characteristics that they normally display, dividing up the discussion by the nature of the collateral involved: goods, investment products, and receivables.

Abstract:
Under normal conditions, the right ventricle (RV) virtually acts as a passive conduit. In critically-ill patients many situations induce uncoupling between the right ventricle and pulmonary circulation, leading to RV systolic dysfunction, then failure. Mechanical ventilation has a major impact by decreasing RV preload, but also significantly increasing RV afterload. RV function should thus always be interpreted and re-evaluated in the light of respiratory mechanics and ventilator settings. RV systolic function is key to the patient’s haemodynamic profile and must be monitored to achieve optimal haemodynamic management. Echocardiography is the best compromise between clinical effectiveness and invasiveness to monitor RV function. A limitation is its inability to monitor haemodynamics continuously. Acute cor pulmonale is defined by the combination of RV dilatation with paradoxical septal motion during systole. In conclusion, RV function monitoring is strongly recommended in many situations encountered in the intensive care unit, such as ARDS, septic shock, and pulmonary embolism. Many devices are available, but echocardiography constitutes the best compromise between accuracy and invasiveness.

Abstract:
From natural disasters to private funerals, digital media are playing a central role in the documentation and commemoration of shared significant events and individual loss experiences. Yet few studies have fully engaged with the increasing role mobile media play in making meanings related to traumatic events across different individual and collective contexts. Haunting Hands provides the first in-depth study into understanding the role of mobile media in memorialization and bereavement as a cultural and social practice. Throughout the chapters in this book, we explore how mobile devices are both expanding upon older forms of memory-making and creating new channels for affective cultures whereby the visual, textual, oral, and haptic manifest in new ways. Encompassing everything from phones to tablets, mobile media are not only playing a key role in how we represent and remember life, but also in how we negotiate the increasingly integral role of the digital within rituals in and around death. Haunting Hands posits how, during times of distress, mobile media can assist, accompany, and at times augment the disruptive terrain of loss. The book expands upon debates in the area of online memorialization in that the mobile device itself takes prominence, not only for its communicative or social function, but also for the ways in which it can contain as well as generate an intimate space within it. In this way, the device becomes an important companion for mobile-emotive grief as the bereaved engage with emotionally charged digital content in solitary, sometimes secretive, and sometimes shared ways.

Abstract:
Technological evolution and revolution are both driven by the discovery of new functionalities, new materials and the design of yet smaller, faster, and more energy-efficient components. Progress is being made at a breathtaking pace, stimulated by the rapidly growing demand for more powerful and readily available information technology. High-speed internet and data-streaming, home automation, tablets and smartphones are now ‘necessities’ for our everyday lives. Consumer expectations for progressively more data storage and exchange appear to be insatiable. In this context, ferroic domain walls have attracted recent attention as a completely new type of oxide interface. In addition to their functional properties, such walls are spatially mobile and can be created, moved, and erased on demand. This unique degree of flexibility enables domain walls to take an active role in future devices and hold a great potential as multifunctional 2D systems for nanoelectronics. With domain walls as reconfigurable electronic 2D components, a new generation of adaptive nano-technology and flexible circuitry becomes possible, that can be altered and upgraded throughout the lifetime of the device. Thus, what started out as fundamental research, at the limit of accessibility, is finally maturing into a promising concept for next-generation technology.

Christie, Jessica Joyce. Rock Shrines, Ceque Lines, and Pilgrimage in the Inca Provinces. Edited by Sonia Alconini and Alan Covey. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190219352.013.11.

Abstract:
This chapter links rock shrines, ceque lines, and pilgrimage as an imperial strategy devised in the heartland and exported into the provinces to order and coalesce Inca territories into an empire-wide ideological geography. Current understandings of carved rock shrines/huacas as materializations of stone ideology are explained. These rock huacas defined certain ceque lines and roads, and their political charge was performed in pilgrimage-related rituals. These roads, as well as their stony markers, could hold many positions on the fluid continuum between physical, functional, symbolic, ideological, and conceptual, and thus, functioned both as long-distance ceques and ceque shrines. Evidence from the provinces is presented in three case studies: the Island of the Sun in Lake Titicaca, Vilcashuamán/Intiwatana, and Ingapirca/Coyuctur.

Abstract:
If a quantum state completely specified the properties of a system to which it was assigned then application of quantum theory to an interaction intended to correlate properties of a measured system to those of a measuring device would leave that device recording no determinate outcome, contrary to what we observe. This is the quantum measurement problem. But the problem does not arise if the function of a quantum state assignment is not descriptive but prescriptive, so that all quantum state assignments are relational. Models of decoherence can certify the empirical significance of rival claims about which measurement outcome a device records, but their application does not explain but presupposes that exactly one such claim is true. The reality criterion which Einstein and colleagues applied to show the incompleteness of quantum description of reality is inapplicable to their chosen system while a slightly modified criterion is false.

Hugh, Beale, Bridge Michael, Gullifer Louise, and Lomnicka Eva. Part V Enforcement, 19 Enforcement of Financial Devices Involving The Transfer or Retention of Title. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/law/9780198795568.003.0019.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates how financing devices that involve either the retention or the transfer of title, although performing an equivalent function to security interests, are generally not considered ‘security’ under English law. Hence, the general characteristics that security interests display when they are enforced, in particular the obligation of the secured creditor to account for any surplus and the obligation of the debtor to make good any deficit, do not rise. The financing devices, being straightforward commercial contracts, are enforced according to their terms, without the application of any of those ‘security’ principles. However, in so far as these devices perform a security function, their express terms often reflect these ‘security’ characteristics, with the contract often providing for a financial adjustment so as to preclude the ‘secured creditor’ receiving a ‘windfall’ or suffering a ‘shortfall’.

Kliger, Alan S., and Rita Suri. Frequent haemodialysis. Edited by Jonathan Himmelfarb. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780199592548.003.0262_update_001.

Abstract:
Haemodialysis is a renal replacement treatment, an ‘artificial kidney’ that performs some of the functions of the normal kidney. It is an inelegant device, providing only a fraction of native kidney’s ability to filter toxins from the blood, but with none of the responsiveness to volume, fine feedback control to regulate solute concentrations, or endocrine functions of the healthy organ. Conventional haemodialysis performed three times a week for 4 hours per treatment filters the blood for only 12 of 168 hours each week, and removes less than 10 per cent of small solutes like urea than does the normal kidney. It is therefore not surprising that haemodialysis patients suffer high morbidity and mortality. A dialysis patient’s expected remaining lifetime is substantially shorter than a comparable person with normal kidney function. For example, a woman aged 40–44 years old in the general population can expect on average 40 more years of life, but if she is on dialysis her life expectancy is only 8.1 years. She is also more likely to have co-morbid disease, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, metabolic bone disease, anaemia, sepsis, depression, malnutrition and inflammation, and physical and cognitive impairment.

Abstract:
This chapter shows how book 1 of Paradise Lost metaphorically depicts the role of the devil in raising the rebel angels out of their “bottomless perdition,” an act of poetic creation analogous to the divine creation of the universe described in the invocation—“how the heavens and earth/Rose out of chaos.” The chief devils described in the catalog that occupies the center of book 1 and organizes its poetic figures and symbolic geography—Carthage, Sodom, Egypt, Babel-Babylon, Rome—are precisely those who will come to inhabit the pagan shrines that human idolatry will build next to or even inside the Jerusalem temple, profaning God's house. This catalog—whose traditional epic function is to size up military force—instead suggests the force of spiritual falsehood, and it corresponds to the defeated devils' own reluctance to pursue another direct war against God; they would rather resort to satanic fraud.

Urton, Gary. Quipus and Yupanas as Imperial Registers. Edited by Sonia Alconini and Alan Covey. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780190219352.013.46.

Abstract:
The Incas used the quipu, a knotted cord device, for administrative and historical record-keeping. This chapter summarizes the modern scholarship on the quipu, which uses colonial documents and analyses of the construction and numerical composition of surviving quipus. Seventeenth-century sources describe how quipu records were calculated using the yupana, a simple device for performing basic arithmetic functions. Most of the extant quipus are found in museums or private collections, removed from their original context, but the recent discovery of several quipus that were left at the coastal site of Inkawasi when it was abandoned offer a unique opportunity to consider how they were used to register the movement of staple goods moving in and out of an Inca imperial storage facility.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter argues that a specific compositional device well known from the Homeric poems, the so-called anticipatory doublet, can be detected in nearly every poem of the Trojan Cycle. Although doublets can be used on either a small or a large scale, it is particularly the latter function that comes out most clearly in the evidence. It may be that some poems were essentially constructed from large-scale narrative doublets (especially the Aethiopis, Nostoi, and Telegony). It is notable that different poems use the same conventional elements (e.g., aristeiai, prophetic speeches, divine epiphanies) to develop these structures. Several examples suggest sustained thematic intensification across doublet structures and use of the device to emphasize character roles, in particular that of the epigone Neoptolemus.

Abstract:
Every language has some means of categorizing objects into humans, or animates, or by their shape, form, size, and function. The most wide-spread are linguistic genders—grammatical classes of nouns based on core semantic properties such as sex (female and male), animacy, humanness, and also shape and size. Classifiers of several types also serve to categorize entities. Numeral classifiers occur with number words, possessive classifiers appear in the expressions of possession, and verbal classifiers are used on a verb, categorizing its argument. Genders and classifiers of varied types can occur together. Their meanings reflect beliefs and traditions, and in many ways mirror the ways in which speakers view the ever-changing reality. This volume elaborates on the expression, usage, history, and meanings of noun categorization devices, exploring their various facets across the languages of South America and Asia, known for the diversity of their noun categorization. The volume starts with a typological introduction outlining the types of noun categorization devices, their expression, scope, and functions, in addition to the socio-cultural aspects of their use, and their development. It is followed by revised versions of eight papers focussing on gender and classifier systems in two areas of high diversity—South America (with a focus on Amazonia) and Asia.

Compton, Richard. Adjuncts as a diagnostic of polysynthetic word formation in Inuit. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198778264.003.0013.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines polysynthetic word formation in Inuit (Eskimo-Aleut), using the presence and variable ordering of a closed class of adverbs within verbal complexes as a diagnostic device to evaluate the adequacy of different accounts of word formation. It is argued that a head movement account of Mirror Principle orders within Inuit words undergenerates with respect to the observed variation in adverb ordering, particularly if a fixed hierarchy of adverbial functional projections is assumed, as in Cinque (1999). Instead, it is shown that an analysis that employs a right-headed structure, XP-sized phasal words, and Ernst’s (2002) semantically based framework of adverb licensing better captures the observed variation.
