Abstract:
Given the current situation that the research on the linguistic landscape in the tourism field is relatively insufficient, we try to carry out an investigation on the construction of linguistic landscape in the Fulai Mountain tourist area of Shandong Province, China, from the perspective of the tourism language landscape in domestic tourist areas. This study found that the language signs in the tourist area are mainly monolingual, supplemented by bilingual and trilingual signs. There are three languages in the Fulai Mountain tourist area: Chinese, English and Korean, among which Chinese is the preferred code, while English and Korean are marginalized in the linguistic landscape. The administrative department of the Fulai Mountain tourist area plays a decisive role in the construction of the linguistic landscape. We also find some problems with the linguistic landscape in the Fulai Mountain tourist area, such as insufficient construction of a diversified linguistic landscape, non-standard translation of language, and lack of design ideas and regional characteristics of the language signs. In the future, tourist area management departments should attach importance to the value of linguistic landscape construction, fully consider tourists' multi-language needs, improve linguistic landscape design, and regularly carry out linguistic landscape surveys.

Abstract:
The paper presents the analysis of Fula numeral system. Fula is an Atlantic language, dispersed throughout a vast territory in Sub-Saharan Africa. It has over 20 differently-sized lects subdivided into three zones - Western, Central and Eastern. The research included collecting the language data on six major lects, two from each zone. Then this data was analyzed from the point of view of internal and external syntax of ordinal, cardinal, distributive and fraction numerals. The comparative analysis of Fula numeral system on inter-lect scale has never been reflected in earlier Fula studies. Apart from a unique collection of numeral data from all language zones of Fula, the paper presents comparative analysis of such data, including, but not limited to, phonetic and contact-induced variabilities. The sources of structural and lexical loans in the system are listed wherever possible, because the disperse nature of Fula lects means that the contact languages and the ensuing changes can be different for each lect. Special attention is paid to the numeral bases, which can be somatic, commercial of a combination of the two. The Fula numeral system has never been analyzed from this point of view, and the contact changes to it are of great linguistic interest. Also cardinal numerals in Fula can change their form depending on the personality parameter of head noun. This system is unique for Fula and, more specifically, to its numeral system, and is properly described for the first time. Some parts of the Fula numeral system, like distributive and fraction numerals for some lects, have been found underrepresented and poorly described, which leaves room for further research, both field one and typological.

Abstract:
This paper investigates the impacts of standardisation and vehicularizationon linguistic diversity. We demonstrate in the light of Tɔŋúgbe in south-eastern Ghana and vehicular Fula in Northern Cameroon that natural languages are social objects in motion, which can be institutionally and/ or socially subjected to promotion or demotion. In the first part, we show that Tɔŋúgbe, one of the dialects of the Ewe language, brings to the fore data that is not captured by standard Ewe even though such data is critical to the understanding and study of not just the Ewe language, but also, the whole Gbelanguage cluster. We concentrate on the definite article in the dialect and demonstrate that, contrary to what pertains in standard Ewe, NP determination with the definite article in Tɔŋúgbe is an intersection between syntax and phonology. In the second part we argue that vehicularizationas in the case of Fula Adamawa, appears to be a double-egged sword which on one hand promotes a language or a variety among others and, on the other hand, causes the demotion of minority languages or varieties.

During the 17th and 18th centuries the Frisians and the Dutch were dominant in the whaling fisheries of the Davis Strait. They also traded with the Inuit and contributed to the Greenlandic pidgin that both parties used as a trade language. Despite intensive interethnic contacts, there are no traces of the Frisian or Dutch languages in modern Greenlandic, with the exception of the word malamuk ‘fulmar.’ In addition, similar forms are also attested in various Germanic languages. Although the exact etymological origin of this word and the precise route by which it ended up in Greenlandic have not been resolved completely, it is beyond doubt that Frisian and Dutch whaling crews were its point of entry.

Arthur Fula's debut novel Jôhannie giet die beeld (Lit: Johannesburg moulds the graven image) was well received in the beginning of 1954 but has in recent years been largely forgotten. The novel was promoted as the first "by a Bantu in Afrikaans", a designation that differentiated him, a third language speaker, from the typical Afrikaans writer who was ordinarily a white, first language speaker. The novel registers, in the tradition of the ˜'Jim-comes-to Jo'burg novels', the migration of black characters to the urban areas with the persistent struggle between indigenous traditions and the presence of an unknown, even threatening Western modernity. In his second novel Met erbarming, O Here (With Compassion, Oh Lord, 1957) Fula made peace with the permanency of urban black Africans and their aspirations. This essay introduces the emergence of the autodidact Fula's authorship amidst a period of profound change and adaptation in South Africa during the 1950s, tracing his personal history, the circumstances of his writing and choice of language, and the reception of his debut novel.

“Many African languages have a long written tradition, e.g. Ge'ez, Kiswahili, Hausa, etc.” reads the summary of panel 21 of the AEGIS conference “African Manuscripts and Museum Collections in Europe”. The list could be extended to include other names familiar to a wider audience, e.g., Fula(ni) (Fulfulde), Manding (Mandenkan, Bambara, Dyula, Mandinka), Wolof, Asante (Akan), Songay. The Kanuri language however, needs some introduction. This is to a certain extent a historical paradox, because Kanuri was in fact the first African language to be extensively documented in the middle of the 19th century by Sigismund Koelle. In 1854 Koelle published two large volumes on Kanuri grammar and an anthology of oral narratives (1854a, 1854b). Remarkably, four tales from the Koelle's Kanuri anthology found their way into Volume 3 of the 3rd edition of the Grimm Brothers’ Children and Household Tales (1856).

AbstractParadis and LaCharité (1996, 1997) have proposed a model of loanword adaptation, couched within theTheory of Constraints and Repair Strategies(Paradis 1988a,b). One of the mechanisms used in their model, called the Threshold Principle, first advanced by Paradis, Lebel, and LaCharité (1993), poses problems. This principle, whose implementation implies arithmetic counting, goes counter to standard views of generative phonology against counting. In this article, an analysis of deletion contexts found in loanwords which accounts for the data observed on structural grounds only is developed without any appeal to arithmetic counting. Based on the adaptation of French rising diphthongs and nasal vowels in two languages, Fula and Kinyarwanda, it is argued that an analysis based solely on the segmental representations of the foreign forms to adapt and the segmental and syllabic constraints of the borrowing language is sufficient to make correct predictions regarding the adaptation patterns found in these languages.

Abstract:
Among 4,499 segmental malformations found in English loanwords in three large corpora of French, the laryngeal /h/ is the only segment that is never adapted, i.e. replaced by another segment. We suggest that the systematic deletion of /h/ in French follows from the fact that, phonologically, French, like Portuguese and Italian, does not employ the Pharyngeal node, the articulator that characterises gutturals. This prevents English /h/ from being handled phonologically (deleted or substituted) in those languages. The non-availability of the Pharyngeal node also explains systematic deletion of the pharyngeal and laryngeal gutturals in Arabic loanwords in French. In contrast, English /h/ is adapted by languages employing the Pharyngeal node phonologically, such as Spanish, Bulgarian, Catalan, Mandarin Chinese, Greek and Russian. Likewise, the availability of the Pharyngeal node in Fula and English allows the adaptation of Arabic pharyngeal and laryngeal gutturals in Fula, and non-glottal gutturals in English.

Uppsatsens huvudfrågor var att undersöka vilken attityd ungdomar har till användandet av de som benämns som fula ord samt varför de använder dem. Ett ord som kallas för fult innebär att de är ett tabubelagt ord. Det är ett ord som är kraftfullt, framkallar reaktioner vilket innebär att det inte bör sägas. De som personer som använder dessa ord mest är arbetarklassen och ungdomar, framförallt killarna. Dock har tjejerna börjat jämna ut skillnaderna genom att använda de ”fula orden” allt mer.

Orsakerna till att de så kallade fula orden används är för det första för att uttrycka känslor. Det kan vara när en plötslig känslomässig förändring sker eller när man utsätts för fysisk smärta. Sedan kan det också vara en språklig anledning som tas till för att chockera och förstärka ens budskap. Lägg där till att de kan användas för att visa på vänskap och samhörighet, men också för att visa på makt.

Ungdomars attityd gentemot att använda de som kallas för fula ord varierar, men de flesta använder dem om än i olika omfattning. De anser inte att de ska användas i offentliga sammanhang som i nyhetsprogram i media, men att det är okej i den privata sfären. Det är också i den privata sfären som de flesta använder dem oavsett kön, ålder eller klass. Det egna användandet beror dock till stor del på den uppfostran man har fått samt vilken attityd gentemot dem man har. När killar och tjejer jämförs påvisas inga större skillnader, även om tjejerna i större omfattning använder sig av eufemism. Det ska bero på att tjejer oftare strävare efter ett mer vårdat språk.

Medias påverkan på attityden och användandet av de så kallade fula orden är omtvistad. De används i allt större omfattning idag i underhållningsprogram och på internet, även om de mer allvarliga delarna av medias utbud oftast inte brukar dem. Dock förekommer de allt mer i skrift idag, då många privatpersoner skriver både krönikor, bloggar och allt mer SMS.

Uppfattningen att många av de ”fula orden” blivit allt mer stereotypa och mindre chockerande resulterar i att behovet av nya uppkommit. Det vanligaste sättet att bilda nya är att låna från andra språk rakt av eller att översätta dem till svenska. Behovet av att provocera och framkalla reaktioner finns dock kvar, även om möjligheten styrs av omgivningens attityd gentemot de så kallade fula orden.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka chatkonversationernas talspråkliga uttryck i form av ord och symboler som förstärkning till skriftspråket på sociala medier. De delar som undersöks är akronymer, förkortningar, fula ord, diskurspartiklar, slang, symboler och humörsymboler. Målgruppen för undersökningen är ungdomar på högstadiet och de sociala medier som används är Facebook och Kik. En infallsvinkel till uppsatsen är att undersöka om det kan utläsas någon skillnad i användningen av tillägg hos killar och tjejer. Undersökningen bygger på de chatkonversationer som informanterna själva valt ut och avidentifierat. Resultatet visar att det finns en del värderande skillnader, men också en del likheter, mellan killarna och tjejernas användning av de olika tilläggen. Resultatet visar bland annat att killarna och tjejerna använder fula ord lika frekvent. En stor skillnad är att tjejerna använder betydligt fler symboler (till exempel hjärta och tummen upp) än killarna medan killarna använder fler humörsymboler (smilisar eller emojis).

I denna uppsats undersöks ett urval gymnasielevers attityder till i synnerhet svenska svordomar. Tonvikten ligger vid attityderna till svordomar hos dem som har svenska som ett andraspråk och huruvida dessa skiljer sig i förhållande till attityderna hos dem som har svenska som sitt modersmål. Grunden i undersökningen utgörs av en enkät som sedan kompletteras med ett antal intervjuer. Resultaten vilar alltså till störst del på kvantitativa data vilka i sin tur diskuteras utifrån Bourdieus (1991) begreppsapparat om kulturellt kapital, marknader och habitus, samt teorier kring språkets kopplingar till känslor. Undersökningen visar att det finns skillnader i attityder till svordomar mellan modersmålstalande och andraspråkstalande av svenska inom det föreliggande urvalet. Sammanfattningsvis tenderar de som har svenska som andraspråk att svära mindre och reagera kraftigare vid förekomster av svordomar än vad modersmålstalarna gör. Resultaten visar också att andraspråkstalarna har en tendens att bejaka svordomarnas kränkande funktioner, medan modersmålstalarna i högre utsträckning än andraspråkstalarna bejakar svordomar i syften som att förstärka yttranden eller avreagera sig vid smärta. Dessa skillnader antas kunna härledas ur de värderingar som återfinns inom den kultur respektive deltagare vuxit upp i.

Abstract As families are the last fortresses of minority languages. Minority languages which are even not used at home would be nothing but dead languages. The ultimate result of taking no action to protect minority languages is the extinction of minority languages. As a family can be a decision-making unit of languages, family language policy is a bottom-up manner of language preservation, which ensures the mother tongue of a family can be passed down to many generations to come. From the perspective of family language policy, we seek to explore family language policies and language preservation in families of intermarriages between Fulao and Hakka People in Taitung. Among numerous cases of intermarriages between Hakka and non-Hokka people, the majority of cases are the intermarriages between Fulao and Hakka People. As a result, Hakka and Fulao dialects are no longer spoken in some families of intermarriages between Fulao and Hakka People. With a speed of dying out which is only secondary to that of Taiwan`s indigenous languages, Hakka dialect appears an endangered language among all minority languages in Taiwan. In this study, twelve families of intermarriages between Fulao and Hakka people in Taitung are selected as for exploration of family language policies in this study. By means of analyzing language practice, language ideologies, and language management in families of intermarriages between Fulao and Hakka People and outlining language policies in these families, we attempt to have further investigations into the relationship between family language policies and Hakka dialect preservation in this study. As indicated in this study, there are signs of the disappearance of both Hakka and Fulao dialects in families of ethnic intermarriages whereupon Mandarin Chinese are gaining domination. Among the twelve selected cases for this study, Hakka dialect preservation takes place in five cases whereas Hakka dialect is no longer spoken in other seven cases. From the perspective of family language policy, elements that are either favorable or causing hindrance to the passing down of Hakka dialect in generations of families are summarized below: 1. With respect to the language practice of Hakka dialect in a majority of families of intermarriages of Fulao and Hakka people, Hakka dialect is no longer spoken. In a family, there is usually a shortage of Hakka speaking family members, situational contexts for the use of Hakka dialect, and an environment conducive to the learning of Hakka dialect. Abstract:

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka och ge kunskap om hur ungdomars användning av och attityder till svordomar ser ut idag. Egna erfarenheter visar att det finns ett stort intresse, framförallt bland skolpersonal, inför detta forskningsområde. Frågeställningarna ser ut på följande sätt: Vilka attityder har ungdomar idag till olika svordomar? Det vill säga varför svär ungdomar och vilka ord uppfattar de som särskilt grova? Hur ser attityderna gentemot undervisning kring ämnet svordomar i skolan ut? Vilka svordomar använder ungdomar? Förekommer skillnader mellan pojkar och flickor inom dessa frågor?

Metoden är en datainsamling som sker genom en enkätundersökning där elever besvarar ett antal frågor, och där även elevernas kön och ålder tas i beaktning. Som komplement till enkätundersökningen genomförs även en intervju bland skolpersonal. Utöver detta tas även föräldrarnas påverkan i beaktning. Undersökningen är både av kvalitativ och kvantitativ art. Respondenterna bestod av 61 skolelever (senare skolår) och 5 skolpersonal.

Resultatet visar att fan och jävlar är de vanligast förekommande svordomarna och att ordet hora är den i särklass grövsta svordomen. Undersökningen visar även att ungdomar säger sig använda svordomar framförallt när de är arga eller att det sker rent spontant. Samtliga i skolpersonalen och 43 % av eleverna ansåg att undervisning kring ämnet svordomar borde förekomma i skolan. Jag fann även att det är klart vanligare att föräldrar svär än att de tillåter att deras barn gör det. Resultatet visar även tydliga skillnader mellan könen, exempelvis att flickor svär minde än pojkar i klassrummet.


The purpose of this essay is to investigate and provide knowledge about young people’s use of and attitudes toward curse words in today’s society. My own experience shows that there is a big interest, especially among school staff, in this field of research. The questions are following: What attitudes do young people have toward curse words in today’s society? That is to say, why do young people curse, and what words do they find especially offensive? What are the attitudes toward the education about curse words in school? What curse words do young people use? Are there differences between boys and girls in these questions?

The method used is gathering of data from questionnaires where the students answer a fixed amount of questions, and the students’ genders are taken into consideration. To complement the questionnaire the school staff is interviewed. In addition to this the parents’ influence is taken into consideration. The investigation is both qualitative and quantitative. Sixty-one students (later grades) responded to the questionnaire and five members of the school staff.

The results show that fan and jävlar are the most common curse words and the word hora is the most offensive. The investigation also shows that young people curse mostly when they are angry or that it happens spontaneously. Everyone in the school staff and 43% of the students agreed that the school should teach about curse words. I found that it is clearly more common for parents to curse themselves than let their children use curse words. The results show clear differences between the genders, e.g. girls curse less in the class room than boys.

Abstract:
When they set out to colonize Africa, Europeans were faced with the pressing issue of mastering the African multilingual landscape. This chapter explores the role of languages and language policies in francophone sub-Saharan Africa (AOF and Belgian Congo) and pays attention to the biopolitical arsenal deployed by imperial administrations to manage linguistic issues. By focussing on the works of some Third Republic figures like Louis Faidherbe, Onésime Reclus, and Maurice Delafosse, it is shown that strict evolutionist taxonomies were used to foster the predominance of French and assign a vehicular role to African languages such as Swahili, Fula and Wolof. The cultural assimilation engendered by colonialism bore witness to the emergence of Francophonized African scholars such as Cheikh Anta Diop and Amadou Hampâté Bâ who, after WW2, promoted African languages to fulfil their anti-colonial and pan-Africanist agenda. This project of linguistic decolonization is explored via a close examination of Nations nègres et culture by C.A. Diop. His promotion of Wolof, a programme set in motion against Senghorian francophonie, is still ongoing now as demonstrated by the Céytu translation project initiated by Boubacar Boris Diop in 2016.
