Full textBecause the wear laws do not account of evolving tribological conditions, they cannot predict the operating life of contacts between control rods and their guides in Pressurized Water Nuclear Reactors. This restriction is overcome by the study of the chain of tribological phenomena witch control the third body flow and therefore the wear. The aim of this work is to predict this contact life. This problem cannot be studied "in vivo", because of the radioactivity, implying the use of a simulator to attempt to reproduce the real contact geometry and conditions, to create specimens which serve as a reference. The lack of rheological data on the third body is overcome by a catalog relating morphology, cohesion and adherence of this third body. The catalog is established using calculations and tests on different rigs to study the parameters governing birth and life of the third body. The use of this catalog allows the reconstitution of the third body life, the contact behavior, and the third body flow evaluation. One scenario of the contact behavior is described and validated. It shows that the flow of wear particles depends on the third body reconstitution and its morphology is adapted to accommodate the velocity difference between guides and structures. The use of this catalog shows, through tests at different temperatures, that the variation of wear particle flow is due to the temperature influence on the operating conditions and not on the variations of the material properties

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of some boundary value contact problem, with or without friction, between a body and a foundation. We consider the case of small deformations and we study quasistatic process for elastic, viscoelastic and viscoplastic materials. The results obtained concern the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions as well as the behaviour of the viscoelastic solutions as the viscosity converges to zero. The thesis is structured in four parts. In the first part we present the different mechanical models and we recall some tools of functional analysis. The second part is devoted to the study of viscoelastic frictionless contact problems with normal compliance and Signorini condition. In the third part, we are interested in the study of antiplane problems with Tresca's friction, for linearly elastic and viscoelastic materials. Finally, the fourth part is devoted to the study of viscoplastic contact problems with normal damped response and friction

Full textAn object is said to be slender if at least one of its dimensions is small compared to the others. This characteristic makes it possible to impose important deformations on it while remaining in the elastic domain. If we assemble several of these objects, predicting the mechanical response of the assembly requires taking into account contact effects including friction and adhesion. In this thesis, we study two kind of assemblies. The first one is ensemble of plates and the second one of beams. We study in the first part two booklets whose pages are inserted two by two, a type of assembly that has become popular for the impressive results it produces when made with phonebooks. We have characterized the origin of the force that keeps the two booklets interleaved. In the second part we study the compression of a bundle of fibers connected by their ends. We also discuss the link between these experiments and the physics of painting

Full textThe aim of this work is to study theoretically and experimentally the friction in an elastic contact subjected to rolling or sliding (fretting). In a normally loaded elliptical contact, the friction stems from two factors: micro-slip between the contacting surfaces and the elastic hysteresis. In order to evaluate the friction induced by micro-slip, an analytical model was developed by taking into account the elastic displacements on contact surface. The difference between linear velocities of corresponding points of the interface induces a supplementary micro-slip, which can be computed by using the fundamental equations of kinematics. The contact is divided into micro-slip zones, subjected to shear stresses. The tangential tractions and corresponding friction coefficient, were computed for each point in contact surface by considering these shear stresses. The model was developed for circular and elliptical contacts geometry. The stress field on the interface was computed both for rolling and sliding contacts. The Huber-Mises-Hencky equivalent stress, assumed to be responsible for the contact surface failure, was numerically computed in each point of contact surface. The second source of friction, namely hysteresis losses, were studied using impact contact tests. The linear relationship between hysteresis losses and the deformed material volume was assumed. The theoretical results were verified by a comparison with literature and especially deviced experimental tests

Full textThe major scientific difficulties of the physicochemical and mechanics-physics analysis of the relation between adhesion and friction relate to the viscoelasticity of the contact and the great local deformations located on the edge of the contact, located in the crack zone. The central objective of this thesis is to study the correlations between friction and adhesive phenomena of surface. The difficulty of this work consists in differentiating the contributions from various dissipations of energy, surface or volume, being able to take place during dynamic adhesive contacts on polymer surfaces. An original approach is carried out thanks to the use of two home-built apparatus allowing the study of dynamic contacts, between a sphere and a plan, in tangential and normal displacement. The control of the time temperature dependences of polymeric materials allows the adjustment of the viscoelastic properties of the solids in contact

Full textThis thesis presents a study of damping in assembled structures, or, more precisely, a study of the vibrations of assemblies under external excitations. The paper contains five chapters examining this problem from both analytical and experimental viewpoints. An academic investigation is presented as a foundation in order to study assemblies both under constant normal stresses (static), and under tangential stresses linked to the structural vibrations (dynamic). The loss factor that characterizes the damping of the structure is obtained through a quasi-static local study. Then, a dissipation function is given, which allows the refinement of the damping model through a global dynamic study. An experimental analysis is undertaken to examine the results obtained by the modeling. The objective of this analysis is to isolate the effects, at the structural damping, of partial sliding in the assemblies. To isolate these effects, two structures identical in shape and material, one assembled and one uniform, are studied. The data collected from the interfaces are analyzed, and then compared to the analytical results. In order to simulate these effects with greater precision, a modeling is undertaken that takes into account the defects of form for the surfaces in contact

Full textOur interest lies in the bilateral contact between a deformable elasto-visco-plastic solid and a rigid foundation, with Tresca or Coulom friction law. Existence results (and uniqueness results for Tresca law) for associated variational problems are classical. Nevertheless, they are not valid anymore in the frame of aour study, for we have regularized a term in the inequations. We first present the physical background and the mathematical tools related to the problems. We then settle a constructive method for the analysis of variational inequalities involving a regularized convex term. Thus, we obtain existence and uniqueness results, asymptotic convergence results and approximation result concerning theoretical numerical analysis. Then we apply those results to bilateral contact problems involving Tresca or Coulomb friction law. Finally, we present numerical results, in which we compare two ways to compute time discretization and we study the influence of different parameters on the calculus of solutions

Full textThere are lubricated contacts in several mechanical applications. In this thesis, we were interested in the particular case of lubricated contacts in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) regime with spin motion and large contact size. This kind of contacts is industrially present in the taper roller bearing, between the end of the roller and the rib. Only few authors worked on the subject of EHL with a spin motion. However, these authors found that the spin leads to a decrease of the film thickness and the friction coefficient. To better understand how the spin modifies the contact conditions, a test rig and a numerical model were built. The test rig allowed us to simulate closely industrial contacts, both in term of spin quantity and contact size, whereas the numerical model enabled us to understand on which contact parameters the spin motion acts. First of all, the main tendencies measured with Tribogyr and the numerical model are the same as those found in the literature. Then other results were produced. Thanks to the large contact size and temperature measurements, we were able to quantify the thermal dissipation relatively to the contact condition. The result is that the thermal dissipation is linked with the level of spin introduced in the contact. Then, the numerical results showed that the film thickness decreases and looses its symmetry when a spin motion is introduced. The comparison of the results obtained with the test rig and the numerical model showed that the spin introduces an additional shear rate in both rolling and transversal direction that modifies the contact conditions. This additional shearing is not constant over the contact surface and generates a higher heat production and a viscosity reduction by shear thinning effect. Both of these effects lead to decrease the friction coefficient and the film thickness

Full textFriction is scientifically interesting and technologically important. We can characterize friction well, but even the friction force between macroscopic surfaces of known chemistry and topography under known loading conditions cannot yet be predicted from the bottom up. A major obstacle to predicting frictional properties is to link the macroscopic observations to the behavior of the myriad microscopic connections that make up the interaction. The onset of frictional sliding occurs through the breaking of the contacts that were keeping the interface stuck. Recent experiments performed with high spatial and temporal resolution show that rupture nucleates at weak or highly stressed points and propagates outwards from there. Understanding how the rupture travels is an important step towards understanding friction. This thesis presents simulations and theory aimed at improving our understanding of this onset of sliding in dry friction systems. The principal model combines 2D elasticity with an asperity level description of the interface and reproduces and explains many of the experimental results. Analytical calculations provide additional insights

Full textThe study of the response of a non-linear behaviour structure (non-linear material behaviour, large displacement and contact with friction ) impose too long computation time for industrial type structures. In order to reduce the numerical cost, we propose an adaptation of incremental methods to parallel architecture computers. The proposed strategy is based on the use of two decompositions in order to balance computing load among over the different processors. The first decomposition in sub-domains is used to solve global linear problems and the second decomposition is used to integrate the behaviour law. Contact and friction non-linearities are processed using an approch based on large time increment. The algorithm, developed in a parallel environment of the CAST3M finite element computer code, is validated on examples with a large numbers of degrees of freedom and processed on a multi-processor computer

Full textIn the view of robotics or granular media mechanics, we question the statement of the dynamical evolution problem for multibody systems with contacts and friction. The usual approach is event driven and does not allow to state an evolution problem in a systematic way. This matter of fact gave rise to a new approach in the frictionless case we generalize to the case with friction. Sticking to the point of view of Lagrange on the equation of the dynamics, we emphasize the systematic use of virtual powers and duality. This bias suggests to put emphasis on generalized reaction forces in the statement of the evolution problem and not on local reaction forces of the real world, as it is usual in practice. This point of view allows to escape from pathologies known as Painlevé paradox

Full textThe objective of this work is the study of the intrinsic tribological properties (reduction of friction and wear) of aoganimineral additives belonging to the family os soaps of diméthyle-3,5-hexanoique acid (noted acid cekanoïk CK8). The tribological behavior of the studied additives (friction and wear) is intially characterized on a macroscopic scale using an alternative trometer sphere/plane under the extreme conditions of pressure, temperature and shearing reigning in the contact, in order to place itself in limiting lubrification system. The wear reduction is associated to the formation of a tribologica film able to protect materials effectively. The mechanism of action strontium diméthyle-3,5-hexanoate is precisely studied. Electronic Microscopy in transmissionn particulary adpted to the study of the nanoparticles is the means put investigated to characterize the initial additive as well as film formed during tribological tests. Coupling of the various techniques of analysis electronic diffraction, the imaging filtered in energy, the spectroscopy of loss on energy of transmitted electrons (ELLS) and emission of X-rays (EDXS) contributes to determine the chemical composition, the physical and molecular struture of the plases before ond after friction. The comparison of the microstrutures makes it possible to highlight the physicochemical modification undergone by the additive under physical conditions reigning in the contact. In order to complete the study of the intrinsic tribological properties of the additive and tribological film, the investigations on a molecular scale are implented

Full textThe purpose of this work is to characterise the stress tensor and damages induced by rolling contact fatigue. First, experimental tests have been planned to simulate rolling contact fatigue. The influence of the following parameters has been studied: steel (M50 and AISI521 00), surface topography, contact pressure and sliding. A specific device using magnetic sensors has been developed to follow the surface damage evolution. Moreover, an ultrasonic echography device has been used to study subsurface initiation and propagation steps of rolling contact fatigue around inclusions. So, hypothesis on rolling contact fatigue mechanisms and parameter influences have been made. Then, a numerical model using multi-level multi-integration technique has been used to calculate the elastic stress field within a half-infinite body with rough surfaces. The influence of surface topography and friction has been shown in two contact configurations : twodimensional elastohydrodynamically lubricated contact and three-dimensional dry contact. Data concerning microplastic properties of the M50 steel have been used to analyse the calculated stress levels. This work contributes to improve the lifetime prediction of the elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts with real surfaces. Applications include rolling bearings and gears

This damper filters all the perturbations generated principally by the engine along the cinematic chain with impair passenger comfort. The damper consists of two fixed Pa 6/6 washers pressed against a mobile steel late which goes through angular displacements whose frequency and amplitude are dictated by perturbations. The anal sis follows the a roach known as the tribology triplet which consists in studying : the mechanism (or clutch) in order to identify the governing geometric and dynamic parameters the manufacturing conditions with dictate the contact conditions imposed on the first-bodies. The third-bodies which govern through velocity accommodation mechanisms friction (VAM) and thus dam in. The analysis of the mechanisms demonstrates the importance of manufacture on damping performance. First-body analysis point out to the effect of roughness, surface pollution , polymer thermomechanical behaviour on damping Third-body studies have shown that screens can affect damping for yp to a third of the life of the mechanism. Full textThis work is devoted to the dynamic behaviour of the drill-string in the oil well. During drilling, the weight on bit and the effort of cutting generate an axial load and an axial torque in the drill-string. These stresses include a static component and a dynamic component. The dynamic stresses lead to stiffness periodic in time. The equations of the motion consist of a system of differential equations with periodic coefficients. Two problems are studied: the influence of a periodic axial torque which is able to create unstable phenomenon and the interaction between the drill-string and the well. In the first part, the solution of the equations is carried out by factorizing the periodic terms in the base of the Chebyshev polynomials. An experimental device is used to highlight the vibratory phenomena related to parametric instabilities due to the axial torque. The second part concerns the study of the contact between the drill-string and the well. In some cases, this contact will involve in «chaotic” motions. A mechanical model is proposed: it takes into account the motion of bending and torsion as well as the phenomenon of friction between the drill-string and the well. The comparison of experimental results with mechanical models presented validates the software developed
