Abstract:
The growth ofthe revolutionary movement in the ranks of the Russian army on the Romanian front in 1917 has attracted the attention of a number of Soviet historians. M.M. Gitsiu, Deiatel 'nost' soldatskikh sovetov i komitetov na rumynskom fronte i v Moldavii v 1917 g. (Kishinev, 1985), concentrates on the soldier's organizations and the growth of Bolshevik influence among them. E.N. Istrati, Demokraticheskoe dvizhenie za mir na rumynskom fronte v. 1917 gody (Kishinev, 1973), has a broader perspective emphasizing the question of war or peace. M.S. Frenkin, Revoliutsionnoe dvizhenie na rumynskom fronte 1917 g. - mart 1918 (Moscow, 1965), is the best of this genre but despite the title, covers only one of four Russian armies attached to the Romanian front, and the one which was not on Romanian soil. Frenkin's second book, Russkaia armiia i revoliutsiia 1917-1918 (Munich, 1978), written after his emigration to Israel, is a welcome corrective to all Soviet accounts, including his earlier one. But in covering all four fronts, Frenkin devotes limited attention to the Romanian. By far the best general survey of the impact of the Revolution at the front is Allan Wildman, The End of the Russian Imperial Army, 2 vols. (Princeton, 1980, 1987), which is distinguished by balance and insight. However, neither Wildman nor the others mentioned deal with the Romanian response to Russian revolutionary agitation or with Russo-Romanian relations.

Abstract:

Abstract:
AbstractHigh-resolution ground-penetrating radar surveys at 50 MHz on the polythermal glaciers Hornbreen, Hambergbreen and several surrounding glaciers in southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard, are presented and interpreted. Accurate positioning was obtained using differential global positioning system (DGPS). Digital elevation models (DEMs) of the bedrock and surface were constructed. Comparison of DGPS data and surface DEMs with data from the topographic mappings from 1936 oblique stereoscopic aerial photographs and from Mission Russe in 1899–1901 shows that the Hornbreen and Hambergbreen surfaces are about 60–100 m thinner today in the upper part than at the beginning of the 20th century. Hornbreen has retreated by 13.5 km from the central part of the front, and Hambergbreen by 16 km. All the fronts of the nearby east-coast glaciers in this area have retreated. The bedrock DEM shows that the Hornbreen and Hambergbreen beds lie at –25 to 25 m a.s.l. The combination of sub-sea-level fronts and increasing steepness of the glaciers suggests that the low-lying glaciated valley filled by Hornbreen and Hambergbreen may become a partially inundated ice-free isthmus within perhaps 100 years.

Abstract:
The article presents a selected campaign of the Russo-Turkish War, which Turkey fought with Russia and its ally, Austria, in 1787–1792. The Author used the reports of „Gazeta Warszawska” – a leading information magazine, published in 1774–1793 under the editorial supervision of an ex-Jesuit, Father Stefan Łuskina, as the principal source of information. Throughout the entire conflict, Łuskin’s newspaper reported regularly (almost in every issue) on activities on the eastern front. The editor-in-chief was an advocate of pro-Russian position, which did affect the information provided by the publication. The news from the Eastern War published in „Gazeta Warszawska” was selected in such a way as to show the superiority of the Russian army over the Ottoman fleet and army and to prove that the opponents of the Tsaritsa opponents would be inevitably defeated.

Abstract:
Introduction. The article examines newly discovered documents to further analyze the participation of Kalmyks in the Russo-Turkish war of 1735– 1739. Goals. The work introduces new data on the actual circumstances to have preceded the involvement of Kalmyk cavalry into the campaign of 1736 and describes their combat activities. Materials and methods. The paper focuses on documents from the National Archive of Kalmykia — and specifically the then correspondence between Khan Donduk-Ombo, other Kalmyk landlords and regional authorities of South Russia — including dispatches and reports by Kalmyk affairs executives. The comparative historical method proved instrumental in compiling an event chronicle of the 1736 campaign on the basis of coinciding details contained in most of the sources studied. Results. The article publishes a total of ten documents describing the participation of Kalmyk cavalry in 1736 Kuban hostilities. Each of the former clarifies certain circumstances experienced by the Khanate during the military mobilization and sheds light on Kalmyk combat efforts supported by Kabardians, Don and Greben Cossacks. Conclusions. The introduced documentary materials shall significantly contribute to historical reconstruction of not only the Russo-Turkish war of 1735–1739 but also histories of all involved peoples across the North Caucasus and Black Sea Coast.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Russia’s defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905 and the Portsmouth Peace Treaty radically changed the balance of power in the Far East. It caused considerable damage to the image of the Russian Empire in the international arena and had a negative impact on Sino-Russian relations. However, one set of sources allows us to look at the well-known events from a different angle, and this has remained outside the attention of specialists in Sino-Russian relations. Russian satirical periodicals at the turn of the 20th century can serve as such a source, for it was during this period that more information about China became available to a wide range of readers in the Russian press. Along with the growing number of references to China, authors and readers inevitably began to form a unique and sometimes contradictory image of the eastern neighbor. This image, on the one hand, was directly related to current events in politics and international relations, and on the other could itself have a certain influence on the relations of the two empires at various levels. The Russo-Japanese War occupied a special place in the formation of Russia’s image of the East, in general, and of China, in particular. References to military operations on the Far Eastern fronts are found in virtually every issue of the 1904–1905 satirical magazines Budil’nik and Strekoza, which were popular at the time. Of course, the main “evil” for contemporaries was Japan, portrayed in extremely unsightly forms. However, China was not ignored either, especially since military actions partly took place on its territory. This article explores how China was seen by representatives of one of the most popular journalistic genres of those years.

Abstract:
Russian Army and Border guard Colonel Fyodor Fyodorovich Tyutchev (1860–1916), a well – known chronicler of the Russian army and the border guard, served in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905.The purpose of the publication is a comprehensive description of the stay in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904– 1905. The work used sources that had not been previously introduced into scientific circulation, which allowed analyzing the formation of F. F. Tyutchev as a military professional, as well as concretizing the literary and aesthetic concept of the writer. Russian-Japanese War correspondent F. F. Tyutchev, being a correspondent of the newspaper Novoe Vremya, promptly transmitted “hot” information about the affairs of the Russian army to the editorial office. The writer collecting material for future literary works talked with the participants of the Japanese campaign, valuing the opportunity to have conversations not only with the lower ranks who were on the front line but also with the generals whose decisions the outcome of hostilities sometimes depended on. According to the works by Fyodor Fedorovich, we can judge not only the events that took place in the Far East but also analyze the writer’s civil and author’s position, investigate his philosophical beliefs on what is happening, clarify his thoughts, compare the assessments given to him from what he saw and experienced in the war. The presented article develops scientific ideas and traditions in the field of national historiography, generalizing and analyzing individual, previously unknown materials about the Russian-Japanese war and its participants. F. F. Tyutchev, being on the staff of the 1st Argun regiment not only participated in the fighting but also proved himself as a talented artist of the word, conveying the truth of the Japanese campaign in his writings, creating a portrait gallery of the personnel of the regiments of the Trans-Baikal Cossack army.

AbstractLexical borrowings provide important clues regarding the internal structure of segments. We focus on the internal structure of the front rounded vowel /y/ and the arguments which led us to maintain that /y/ is a simple vowel. The unpacking of /y/ in /ju/ in many Russian borrowings from French, German, and several languages of the Turkish family is not the consequence of /y/ including two vowels underlyingly but the consequence of the fact that Russian allows the majority of its consonants to be palatalized. The front rounded vowel /y/ includes the feature combination [−back] ~ [+round]. When an adaptation strategy causes [—back] to delink from /y/ in Russian, [—back] is salvaged by the preceding consonant when this consonant is palatalizable, thus yielding the realization /Cju/.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The article examines an incident in the history of Russo-German literary relations — the lectures delivered by a LEF (Leſt Front for Arts) leader Sergey Tretiakov in Germany (1930–1931) and their reception by German literary circles. Along with ecstatic feedback from leſtist writers, Tretiakov’s appearance provoked criticism from a more conservative public. It is to the criticism of the lecture from the viewpoint of ‘art for art’s sake’ that Gottfried Benn devotes his radio broadcast of ‘The New Literary Season’ (1931), subjected to a detailed analysis in this article. Although contesting Tretiakov’s views of the relationship between literature and politics, as well as offering their slightly cartoonish depiction, Benn provides a fairly detailed description of thetheses; it becomes an important source of information about the contents of Tretiakov’s lectures since one of them was never published. Comparing Benn’s rendering of Tretiakov’s ideas with other publications by Tretiakov, the author discovers that Benn presents an accurate summary of Tretiakov’s critical views on Russian classics and the role of a writer in a Socialist society.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Pax6 is a paired box containing transcription factor that resides at the top of a genetic hierarchy controlling eye development. It continues to be expressed in tissues of the adult eye, but its role in this capacity is unclear. Pax6 is present in the adult corneal epithelium, and we showed that the amount of Pax6 is increased at the migrating front as the epithelium resurfaces the cornea after injury (J. M. Sivak, R. Mohan, W. B. Rinehart, P. X. Xu, R. L. Maas, and M. E. Fini, Dev. Biol. 222:41-54, 2000). We also showed that Pax6 controls activity of the transcriptional promoter for the matrix metalloproteinase, gelatinase B (gelB; MMP-9) in cell culture transfection studies. gelB expression is turned on at the migrating epithelial front in the cornea, and it coordinates and effects aspects of epithelial regeneration (R. Mohan, S. K. Chintala, J. C. Jung, W. V. Villar, F. McCabe, L. A. Russo, Y. Lee, B. E. McCarthy, K. R. Wollenberg, J. V. Jester, M. Wang, H. G. Welgus, J. M. Shipley, R. M. Senior, and M. E. Fini, J. Biol. Chem. 277:2065-2072). We define here two positively acting Pax6 response elements in the gelB promoter. Pax6 binds directly to one of these sites through the paired DNA-binding domain. It binds the second site indirectly by interaction with AP-2α, a transcription factor that also exerts control over eye development. Pax6 control of gelB expression was examined in vivo by using a corneal reepithelialization model in mice heterozygous for a Pax6 paired-domain mutation (Sey +/−). A reduced Pax6 dosage in these mice resulted in a loss of gelB expression at the migrating epithelial front. This effect was correlated with an increase in inflammation and the rate of reepithelialization, a finding consistent with the phenotype of gelB knockout mice. Together, these data indicate that Pax6 controls activity of the gelB promoter through cooperative interactions with AP-2α and support an active role for Pax6 in maintenance and repair of the adult corneal epithelium.

Abstract:
The article aims at identiIying the speciIic qualities oI corerage oI the war between Russia and Japan in 1904-1905 by French newspapers. The study is based on the publications in Iour oI the leading French newspapers oI the period (Le Figaro, Le Temps, Le Journal, and Le Matin) which are presented in Gallica, the online archiye of the National Library of France (Bibliotheque nationale de France). Particular attention is Iocused on publications that reIlect the early period oI the conIlict (27 January - 10 February 1904) and sereral episodes of the war (the shelling of Port Arthur in January-February 1904 and the battle of Liaoyang 24 August - 4 September 1904). The study of archiral documents (a total of 15 issues of Le Matin, 15 issues of Le Journal, 10 issues of Le Figaro, and 2 issues of Le Temps that hare preriously been neither fully translated into Russian nor presented to the academic community) clearly demonstrates that the French newspapers followed one single communication strategy which was quite different from the other pro-Japanese European and American media. The study of hard news and interriews published on the early stage of the conflict reflects the attempts to create a positire image of the Russian Empire in the eyes of French readers, eren though the analysed newspapers relied mainly on reports from English, German, and American newspapers and telegraph agencies. Howerer, reportages, published by a dozen of journalists sent to the theatre of operations in the Far East from Paris, were not only a part of this strategy to reinforce the positive image of Russian troops, they also created an objective picture and a deeply personal account of the event seen through the eyes of a war reporter - the identity and adventures of a war correspondent became, for the first time in the history of French press, a major subject of interest for the audience of the French press. Having examined in detail the publications of two quality newspapers (Le Figaro and Le Temps) and two newspapers for a wider audience (Le Matin and Le Journal) presented on the website of the Gallica archive, the author comes to the conclusion that the French press established a dual approach to war coverage in these years. Despite the great role of information from foreign newspapers and telegraph agencies, gradually, it is the reportage from French correspondents that becomes the leading genre in French journalism at the beginning of the 20th century. Articles describing the reporter's view of the war laid the foundation not only for war journalism but for reportage journalism in the French press as well. Therefore, this study analyses these publications as proper examples of the war reportage and not just as individual correspondence from the front lines. The case of the Russo-Japanese war coverage allows analysing the principles of the construction of belligerents' images in quality and mass newspapers as well as their communication strategy.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Europe is again a divided continent. When it comes to governance, political economy, or values, two contrasting poles have emerged: one Western, liberal, and democratic, another Eastern, statist, and autocratic. The dividing line between them has become ever sharper, threatening to separate Europe into two distinct worlds. This new divide in Europe arises from a clash between two geopolitical concepts for the continent: One is the Western project of a “Europe whole and free,” an enlarging zone of economic cooperation, political interdependency, and democratic values. The other is the Russian project of a “Eurasian Union” to rival the European Union. This article shows how these two sides of Europe have grown further apart in their conceptions of the European space, their values, governance, and economic models. It explores the reasons for the belated Western responses to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s program to divide Europe. The Russo-Georgian war was a turning point, but the West took a long time to recognize the full implications of Putin’s policy. The current confrontation between Russia and the West is not exactly like the Cold War. Russia’s position is weaker. And the battle will be fought out primarily with economic instruments. However, it is clear that this conflict places Central and Eastern Europe back on the front lines of a divided Europe, raising any number of demons from the past.

Abstract:
Introduction. The publication highlights a special period in the history of Kalmykia still insufficiently studied by anthropologists ― that of the Great Patriotic War and nation’s deportation to Siberia (1943–1956) ― introducing memories and narratives thereof. It consists of an introduction, two interviews, commentaries, and a bibliography. The presented narratives belong to individuals who had met the trials of deportation with different life experiences: front-line soldier, Lieutenant L. T. Dordzhiev ― and Elista schoolgirl, daughter of the front-line soldier E. S. Basanova. Goals. The paper seeks to identify and clarify the meanings of everyday practices, details of life that were vital for the generation of our fathers and mothers, so that they remain understandable to the generation of children and grandchildren. Another goal is to understand what construction patterns in deportation narratives can be traced, what images and plots are significant, what verbal formulas and stable expressions are used by storytellers in spontaneous narration, and what assessments of past events and what expressions they give. Materials and Methods. Both the interviews will be explored through narrative analysis. The materials are presented in the form of transcribed spontaneous interviews received by the author from L. Dordzhiev in 2005, and from E. Basanova in 2018. Textological analysis and the method of text deconstruction were employed. Results. The front-line experience of L. Dordzhiev is interesting enough not only for his individual but for his collectivist strategy too, as well as for his participation in Operation Lentil (Russ. Chechevitsa). Male strategies of resistance to a repressive regime show legal literacy and the ability to speak Bolshevik (S. Kotkin) as means of self-defense, as well as a willingness to defend their dignity physically. The woman’s interview shows how the generation of Kalmyk children indoctrinated by Soviet ideology had to live with the values of Soviet society and loyalty to Kalmyk identity. Both the interviews are concrete examples of private memories of the war and deportation years ― first-person memories. The interview texts will be of interest to all researchers of the Kalmyk Deportation and memory of this period. The discursive strategies of these two narratives speak of their positive nature (J. Alexander).

Abstract:
Abstract Background: High-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSOC) is the most frequent histotype of ovarian cancer. More than half of HGSOC is characterized by homologous recombination deficiency (HRD) due to mutations in genes involved in this pathway, including BRCA1/2. Olaparib is a poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) recently approved in front line and maintenance therapy in platinum-sensitive BRCA mutated ovarian cancer patients. Despite olaparib clinical benefits, this treatment is associated with the development of resistance. A better understanding of the mechanisms at its basis could help in finding strategies to delay or overcome/counteract it, possibly translatable in the clinical setting. Methods: We generated an olaparib resistant cell line (BRCA1-/- OlaR), starting from the BRCA1 and TP53 deleted murine ID8 cells (BRCA1-/-) by step wise increasing drug concentrations. Sensitive and resistant cell lines were biologically and pharmacologically characterized and the molecular mechanisms at the basis of olaparib resistance investigated. Cellular viability was assessed by MTS assay, for molecular studies real-time PCR, western blot and RAD51-foci immunofluorescence were performed. Results: BRCA1-/- OlaR cells were 24 fold time more resistant than BRCA1-/- cells and displayed a similar in vitro cell growth compared to the parental cells. Olaparib treatment at IC50 dose caused a longer and stronger G2-M block of the cell cycle in sensitive as compared to resistant cells. BRCA1-/- OlaR cells were cross-resistant to the other PARPis tested, suggesting a common mechanism of resistance. Platinum compounds showed similar cytotoxic activity in sensitive and resistant cells, while a partial cross-resistance was observed with doxorubicin. Interestingly, resistant cells were less responsive to a panel of DNA damage response (DDR) inhibitors (i.e. ATR, WEE1 and CHK1 inhibitors) compared to parental ones; however their combinations with olaparib were synergic in both the sensitive and resistant lines. A partial restoration of the HR pathway (increase in RAD51 foci formation after olaparib and IR treatment), a downregulation of PARP1 protein levels without mutation in PARP1 gene and an upregulation of the MDR transcript could be found in BRCA1-/- resistant cells, strongly supporting multiple heterogeneous mechanisms of resistance. Conclusions: The HR deficient cell line resistant to olaparib we generated showed multiple mechanisms of resistance. The combinations of olaparib with different DDR inhibitors were equally active in sensitive and resistant cells. In spite of the parity relations between the medieval towns and their country surroundings and the high level of development of the settlement structures tracked during the wide-scale research of the settlements of the Southern Russ, the new excavations in the non-fortified settlements keep brining certain discoveries. This is remarkable at Khodosivka-Roslavske settlement found by the Northern Expedition in 2007. The working over of the results of the excavations in 2007—2011 allowed testify highly-developed household and significant level of the inhabitants’ wellbeing. Some peculiarities of the inhabitants’ material culture were characterized, a regular publication was devoted to the specifics of their outfit. The collected spindles and weights for weaving allow imagine the production of threads and cloth, prints on ceramics — specifics of the latter, needles — for clothes making. The osteological collection and leather making tools indicate leather and fur making; awls, sewings, and, rarely, piercers — further processing of the raw material. Leather / fur or thick cloth outfit is marked with a button made of the half of a spindle. The elements of the belt set (buckles, endings, rings-distributors), although a part of them could belong to the horse harness, bags etc., remained better and allow analyze this very specifics of the outfit, especially in view of the whetstones, steel fire strikers and the rest, which had been worn on belts before appearance of pockets in XVII—XVIII cent. Not fully indentified remains the fragment of bronze item which can be attributed to either front plate of bronze bag buckle or one of the variety of Christian incense burner. Substantial supplement of an outfit are the adornments. Aside from the items made of glass, among which, unexpectedly, there are a plenty of bracelets’ fragments, and of amber produced at the settlement, it is necessary to mention a range of metal items. They are temple rings, earrings, necklaces. Among the latter prevailing are the ones produced within the settlement. Together with the glass and amber, the necklaces included mineral components. Fibulas collected on the site have the analogies from the Baltic lands, the same relates to the other items. Arms and hands jewels are represented with bracelets and signet rings. In spite of the rather small researched area of 1041 m2 and so, not too extensive collection of the mentioned findings, its analysis tracks the original peculiarities of the researched settlement.

Background:Takayasu arteritis (TA) refers to chronic progressive non-specific inflammation that involves the aorta and its main branches, causing stenosis and occlusion of arteries in different parts, and ischemic manifestations in the corresponding parts. A variety of immune dysfunctions are involved in the occurrence and development of TA(1)Recent studies have shown that Th17/Treg imbalance plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Takayasu’s arteritis, in which T help 17 cells (Th17) cells are up-regulated in TA patients(2). Th17 cells are closely related to Treg cells during differentiation. There are few studies on the expression level of CD4+CD25+FOX3+T lymphocyte (Treg) cells. This study aims to study the clinical significance of Treg cell expression in peripheral blood of patients with Takayasu’s arteritis. Objectives:To analyze the levels of circulating lymphocyte subsets and serum cytokines in patients with takayasu arteritis (TA), and explore the relationship between their changes and TA disease activity. Methods:A total of 46 TA patients and 43 gender-age-matched healthy controls were enrolled. According to the NIH standard, 30 patients were in active disease. Flow cytometry was used to detect the absolute numbers and ratios of Th1, Th2, Th17 and Treg cells in peripheral blood of all subjects. Magnetic bead-based multiplex immunoassay was used to detect cytokines and statistical analysis was performed. Results:Compared with the healthy controls, the absolute number and proportion of peripheral Treg cells of TA patients significantly decreased while those of Th17 cells increased significantly, leading to the increased ratio of Th17 / Treg. Compared with the inactive group, the TA active group had significantly increased IL-6 and TNF-α, and there was no significant difference in the expression of Th17 cells and Treg cells. Conclusion:In peripheral blood of TA patients, Treg cells decreased, while Th17 cells increased as compared with healthay controls, leading to an imbalance between Th17 and Treg cells. Abstract:
An attempt to compare Russian Tsar Alexander I was the head of the Grand Duchy of Finland, which the Russian army captured in 1809 as a result of the Russo-Swedish war. The final act of the Congress of Vienna of June 1815 decided to establish the Kingdom of Poland. Beside the title of Grand Duke of Finland tsar, Alexander I was awarded the title of the King of Poland. From that moment on, for over one hundred years, the fate of the Grand Duchy of Finland and the Kingdom of Poland was intertwined during the rule of five Russian tsars. The aim of this paper is to answer the question whether two different ways on the road to independence – romantic Polish way with national uprisings, and pragmatic Finnish, relative loyal to the Russian tsars – had an impact on their policy towards both nations. The Kingdom of Poland and the Duchy of Finland were autonomous, were in a personal union with Russian tsars, had their own constitutions, parliaments, armies, monetary systems and educational structures, and official activities were held in Polish (Polish Kingdom) and Swedish (in the Grand Duchy of Finland). Both countries also had their own universities. The first national uprising in the Kingdom of Poland, which broke out in November 1830, resulted in a wave of repression. The Constitution was replaced by the so-called The Organic Statute, the Sejm (the Parliament) and the independent army were liquidated. The Kingdom was occupied by the mighty Russian army, and in 1833 martial law was introduced. The second national uprising of January 1863 led to another wave of repression and intensive Russification of Polish territories. In 1867, the autonomy of the Kingdom of Poland, its name and budget were abolished. From 1872 the Polish language was only an optional choice. After 1863, the policy of the Russian authorities changed towards the Grand Duchy. A session of the Finnish parliament (Eduskunta) was convened for the first time since 1809, the new parliamentary law allowed the dissemination of the Finnish language. After the deadly assault on Alexander II in 1881, his son Alexander III made attempts to limit also Finland’s autonomy. The years 1899–1904 were called the first period of Russification in Finland (“the first period of oppression”). The Manifesto of June 1900 introduced obligatory Russian language in correspondence of officials with Russia. In 1901, the national Finnish army was liquidated. In Russia this was the beginning of the process of the empire’s unification into one cultural, political and economic system. After a short thaw as a result of the 1905 revolution in Russia, the Grand Duchy of Finland, the so-called “second period of oppression” and anti-Finnish politics took place. During the great war of 1914–1918, the Grand Duchy was on the side of Russia. The territories of the former Kingdom of Poland were under German rule since 1915. After the outbreak of the revolution in Russia, the Eduskunta (on 6 December 1917) passed a Declaration of Independence. After a short period of regency, on 19 July 1919, the Finns adopted the republican system with a parliamentary form of government. On 11 November 1918 Germany surrendered on the Western Front. On that day, the Regency Council in Warsaw handed over military authority to the Polish Legion commander Józef Piłsudski. Although Poland still had to fight for the final shape of the state, the 11th of November 1918 is considered the first day of recovered Polish independence.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the evidence from the Grozdov family archive which allows one to trace the continuity between four generations of relatives who carefully preserved their spiritual traditions throughout the tragic and contradictory 20th century. Thanks to the photographs, drawings, letters, documents, diaries transferred by M. V. Ganeyeva (Grozdova) to the museum collections of Tambov, we can see a multicoloured epic picture conveying the entire spectrum of the spiritual world of the intelligentsia during the Great Patriotic War in the hospital city of Tambov. The most informative document of this collection, especially eloquently testifying to the Great Patriotic War, is the diary of Vyacheslav Tikhonovich Grozdov, the grandson of Archpriest Mitrofan Grozdov and the son of the famous surgeon Tikhon Mitrofanovich Grozdov who worked together with St. Luke (Voyno-Yasenetsky) during the war. The pages of the diary depict the stories of the daily life of the front-line city of Tambov where Holy Hierarch-Surgeon Luke arrived on February 19, 1944. Vyacheslav Grozdov recorded the facts of communication between his father and Saint Luke, made notes about their joint operations and speeches at conferences. Vyacheslav himself was repeatedly present at the operations conducted by the Holy Hierarch and, being skilled in drawing, helped him by preparation of figures and tables for his reports at medical conferences. The diary entries reveal that it was Vyacheslav Grozdov who was the author of the pencil portrait of Professor, Doctor of Medicine Archbishop Luke (V. F. Voyno-Yasenetsky), which dates from March 25, 1944. Vyacheslav’s diary entries reveal the everyday self-sacrificial heroism (Russ.: podvig) of the doctors working in Tambov’s evacuation hospitals, and the enormous human pain he had to face. While helping his father in the hospital as an attendant, as well as making sketches of operations and hospital life, Vyacheslav captured pictures characterizing the events of the life of the Archbishop-Surgeon in the city of Tambov. In addition to directly indicating the facts of communication between the Grozdovs and Archbishop Luke, the diary provides the necessary context for understanding many situations throughout the Tambov period of St. Luke's ministry, as well as the wartime life of Tambov in general. Analyzing the evidence from the diary, one can reconstruct and characterize the spiritual and moral environment of the city of Tambov during the archpastoral labours of Saint Luke for the revival of the Tambov diocese during the Great Patriotic War.

Abstract:
Summary: In 1917, with the First World War still raging, Western countries perceived the episodes of generalised social agitation as contagious destruction. The images captured in Russia were shocking: dead in the street, workers dominating public squares, women defending the Czar’s Palace, bearing weapons and fighting in the streets. While Western women were creating links through diverse struggles, Russian activists had advanced their positions demanding for responsibilities in the war effort and insertion into the army. Showing their heads shaven, their chests tightly wrapped under military clothing and their manly looks, the Battalions of Women, Battalions of Death, were formed under the Provisional Government and Minister Kerensky and were authorised to fight on the front. It was the peasant Maria Bochkareva who led these units. With the Revolution, however, the Red Army dismantled the Battalions and purged the women in them, considering them as representatives of the bourgeoisie. This paper describes the historical context of the emergent Battalions of Bochkareva and reviews the tradition of Russian activism and the vital journey of some Russian volunteers in the First World War. Furthermore, it reviews revolutionary facts impacting the fate of women soldiers during the Civil War and the international creation of the myth of the Russian heroine from the figure of Maria Bochkareva. The bibliography provided in the footnotes may be a starting point for a future reflection on those modes of feminist activism, which are unusual in contemporary women’s experience, including the voluntary exercise of violence.Key words: First World War, Russia, Provisional Government, Revolution, 1917, Women’s Battalion of Death, Bochkareva.

Abstract:
Abstract Abstract 1005 The Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia type II (CDA II) is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by an impaired differentiation-proliferation pathway of the erythroid lineage. The vast majority of CDA II cases are associated with mutations in the SEC23B gene, codifying a component of the cytoplasmic coat protein II complex, involved in the anterograde transport of correctly folded protein from the endoplasmic reticulum towards the Golgi (Fromme JC et al, Trends Cell Biol 2008). To date, 86 unrelated cases from CDA II International Registry and 53 different causative mutations have been described (Schwarz K et al, Nat Gen 2009; Bianchi P et al, Hum Mut 2009; Iolascon A et al, Haematologica 2010; Fermo E et al, Blood Cells Mol Dis 2010; Russo R et al, in submission [humu-2010-0373]). This set of patients is composed of 45 cases of Italian origin, and 39 without Italian origin (WIO). Two cases are of unknown origin. Our aim is to characterize the allelic distribution of SEC23B gene mutations in Italian country, in order to define a possible founder effect for the most frequent variants. In this study we included 17 Italian and 6 WIO patients still unpublished, with an overall count of 62 Italian and 45 WIO patients, respectively. Written consent was obtained from all patients in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki. Genomic DNA preparation, mutational search, oligonucleotide primers design and direct sequencing were performed as previously described (Iolascon A et al, Haematologica 2010). Overall we found 30 different causative mutations in Italian patients (13 missense, 8 nonsense, 4 frameshift, 4 splice site mutations and one amino acid deletion) and 32 in WIO patients (19 missense, 8 nonsense, 3 frameshift and 2 splice site mutations). The most representative variants in Italian cohort are E109K and R14W substitutions (27.2%), confirming our previous data (Iolascon A et al, Haematologica 2010). When we analyzed the allelic frequency of 10 mutations (E109K, R14W, R701C, R497C, R217X, R79X, A524V, R264X, R339X, R535X) common to both cohort, we found that R14W variant showed an higher recurrence in Italian CDA II patients when compared to WIO patients (27.2% vs 10.7%). Moreover, E109K substitution showed almost the same allelic frequency between both groups, with only a little prevalence in Italian cohort (27.2% in Italian patients vs 25.0% in those WIO). This observation lead us to investigate whether their frequencies are due to a possible mutational hot spot (i.e. arisen independently) or, perhaps, to a possible founder effect for both mutations, E109K and R14W. So, we performed an haplotype analysis in a case-control study. Here, we focused our attention on E109K mutation. Using the genotype data of CEU population from HapMap Project web site (http://hapmap.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/) we downloaded a list of 9370 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) within a region of 1685 kb upstream, 2656 kb downstream of the SEC23B gene and throughout the gene. From this list, we selected 12 tag-SNPs covering a region of about 1.2 Mb upstream and downstream of the E109K mutation. Tag-SNPs were identified using Haploview software (Barrett JC et al, Bioinformatics 2005), with a threshold of r2 > 0.8 and with a minor allele frequency > 0.35. From 27% of patients with E109K mutation, genotyping was performed by direct sequencing on 16 unrelated patients, 14 homozygotes and 2 heterozygotes for E109K variant. As healthy controls we downloaded genotypes information of 174 unrelated Caucasian subjects (CEU population) available from HapMart. Haplotype analysis, performed using Haploview software, showed that the haplotype CATAGT (composed of 6 SNPs spanning in a 28.8 kb region upstream and downstream of the mutation) is common to the majority of E109K-patients (96.9%); instead, the same haplotype was found only in a smaller percentage (3%) in healthy controls. Additional genetics analyses are ongoing to estimate the age of E109K mutation using a (i) marker by marker approach or (ii) an intra-allelic model to assess the linkage disequilibrium across the marker set, implemented in DMLE+2.2 software. Since the R14W mutation showed an allelic frequency in Italy similar to those observed for E109K, we are testing if also R14W may occur on a common genetic background. Abstract:
Abstract Despite impressive cure rates obtained with modern chemotherapy, the optimal therapeutic strategy in advanced classic Hodgkin Lymphoma (HL) is still debated due to some remaining open issues. These involve the best choice of upfront chemotherapy, the duration and intensity of frontline treatment, the value of consolidation radiotherapy, the role of functional imaging in treatment planning and monitoring and the adequacy of risk stratification tools. These observations have led us to investigate whether intensification of front-line ABVD would be possible while maintaining acceptable levels of toxicity and improving the performance of the schedule. We designed a dose-dense three-weekly version of the ABVD regimen (six cycles), which was also dose intensified, in the first four cycles, by escalating doxorubicin dose from 50 to 70 mg/m2 per cycle, in the absence of consolidation RT. A series of 172 patients (advanced-stage=124, intermediate-stage=48) was studied. Apart from pre- and post-Tx staging, all patients also underwent 18F-FDG-PET imaging after the 2nd cycle (PET2); in case of pathologic uptake at PET2, a new scan was performed after the 4th cycle (PET4). Open-label phase study began I June 2004; specifications are contained in the published article (Russo F BHJ 166,1118,2014) focused on feasibility and toxicity in 82 patients. The demographics and clinical characteristics are in Tab1. Ninety-five percent of patients completed the planned six cycles (median duration time=16.7 weeks). Median actual dose intensities were 20.94 (23.12 cycles1-4), 6.69, 3.96 and 245 mg/m2/week for doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine and dacarbazine, respectively. This corresponded to a 66.9% (85.0%, cycles 1-4) increase in dose intensity for doxorubicin, (total dose 380 mg/m2) and of 32% for the other agents, over standard ABVD. Intensified ABVD was highly tolerated with low rates of hospitalization during treatment, a low incidence of G3/ G4 events, low post-treatment cardiac and pulmonary toxicities and a very low rate of gonadic toxicity. Only two cases of second cancer have been recorded. PET2 was negative in 87% of patients (85% ADV,92%INT). Remarkably a CR rate of 94% (93% ADV, 98% INT) was achieved and EFS and OS at 7-years were 85% (79%ADV, 91% INT) and 96% (93%ADV, 98%INT) respectively (Tab2, Fig1). At univariate analysis (factors: Age, sex, LDH, IPS,B-symptoms, mediastinal bulky disease (MBD), E-disease, PET2, stage IV) the predictive factors of low CR rate were IPS≥3 (CR 89% vs 97%, p=0.03), and PET2pos (CR 65% vs 99%p<0.001). At multivariate analysis PET2 positivity (p<0.001) was the only independent risk factor predictive of low CR rate. Kaplan-Meyer 7yr-EFS was 77 and 78% (Log Rank 1.1, p=0.28) in MBD and no-MBD subsets, respectively. 7yr-EFS was significantly better in patients with PET2neg (87% vs 52% , log rank 24.7, p<0.001) and in patients with IPS 0-2 (88% vs 71% log rank 4.9, p=0.02). At Cox regression analysis PET2 was the only independent factor predictive of Event Free Survival. Intensified ABVD without radiotherapy seems to be adequately powered to exploit early disease chemo-sensitivity yielding high percentage of early negative PET2, high rate of response and survival, without new severe or critical short and long-term toxicities. Abstract:
The knowledge of the science of human body parts for early childhood is very important so that children have the ability to recognize and support the cleanliness and health of members of the body, as well as so that they recognize their identity. In addition, introducing environmentally friendly material for early childhood teachers to enrich learning media. This study aims to improve student learning outcomes in science using environmentally friendly media. The topic raised in this search was about recognizing body parts and their benefits and treatments. This type of research is action research. Respondents involved 19 early childhood students. The results showed that there was an increase in subjects' understanding of swallowing extremities and treatment 60% in the pre-cycle phase, 80% in the first cycle and 93% in the second cycle. The findings show that the use of happy body media has a positive effect on limb recognition. Further research is recommended on environmentally friendly media and ways of introducing limbs to early childhood through media or strategies suitable for the millennial era. Abstract:

Abstract:
PurposeTraditional laboratory measurements of soil water diffusivity (D) and soil water retention curve (SWRC) are always time-consuming and labor-intensive. Therefore, this paper aims to present a simple and robust test method for determining D and SWRC without reducing accuracy.Design/methodology/approachIn this study, a D model of unsaturated soil was established based on Gardner–Russo model and then a combination of Gardner–Russo model with one-dimensional horizontal absorption method to obtain n and a parameters of Gardner–Russo model. One-dimensional horizontal absorption experiments on loam, silt loam and sandy clay loam were conducted to obtain the relationships between measured infiltration rate and cumulative infiltration with wetting front distance. Based on the obtained relationships, the measured infiltration data from the one-dimensional horizontal absorption tests were used to calculate n and a parameters and further constructing D and SWRC.FindingsBoth the calculated D and SWRC inversed from the infiltration data were in good agreement with the measured ones that obtained from the traditional horizontal absorption method and the centrifuge method, respectively. Error analysis indicated that only the infiltration data are enough to reliably synchronously determine D and SWRC.Originality/valueA simple and robust method is proposed for synchronous determination of soil water diffusivity and water retention curve.

Abstract:
The subject of the article is the Russo-Turkish war of 1787–1792, more precisely the campaign of 1789. The issue will be discussed basing on the information published in „Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczno-Ekonomiczny”. The journal was coming out in Warsaw in the years 1782–1792, and Piotr Świtkowski was its editor and publisher. Since the beginning of the Russo-Turkish war, which Austria joined as Catherine II’s ally in February 1788, „Pamiętnik” was posting periodic reports on the activities at the Turkish front. It described the most important battles as well as less significant skirmishes, informed on the movements and the status of the fighting armies, printed the war complements and biographical notes of military commanders. As a supporter of pro-Turkish politics, Świtkowski spoke of the Ottoman Porte and inhabitants of Turkey with fondness, praised the bravery of a Turkish soldier, and positively reflected on the military reforms in that country.

Abstract:
In May 2013, Jack Russo, a Chicago-based tech entrepreneur, had to choose one of four possible product concepts to use as the starting point for his new K–8 educational learning company, TabletTeach LLC. At the time, the K–12 education market in the United States was experiencing major disruption due to print-to-digital transformation, new Common Core State Standards (CCSS), new standardized tests aligned to the Common Core (rolling out in most states in the 2014–2015 school year), and increasing pressure from parents for schools to incorporate technology in their children's learning. Based on his first-hand experience and research, Russo knew there was a significant opportunity for a company that brought to market a tablet-enabled learning solution focusing on grades K–8, which made learning Common Core math and/or language arts fun for every student and engagingly simple for all teachers. This case provides an interesting example of something typically hard to teach: transitioning from the fuzzy front end of a market opportunity analysis to a specific product opportunity. The case bounds the problem by outlining four potential product concepts, which students will then evaluate and rank using their own sets of criteria.Define evaluation criteria for an opportunity analysis of a tech startup in a dynamic market; use these criteria to evaluate a set of product concepts and their business opportunities; refine a set of product concepts to develop and present a recommendation; understand the importance of the problem-persona-product fit and “jobs to be done” data in identifying high-value opportunities; present findings in an opportunity brief and a market opportunity hypothesis statement

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to analyse the experiences and motivations of volunteers who supported Ukrainian refugees who fled to Poland. Our study was conducted among 196 volunteers in Poznan, Poland who answered questions regarding their experiences with voluntary service during the current refugee crisis and the reasons they became involved in volunteer efforts. We found that although the Polish state had no prior experience in welcoming refugees on a mass scale, the Russo-Ukrainian War has resulted in the emergence of “spontaneous volunteers” who have offered their help and assistance to the flood of refugees sweeping in from its eastern neighbor. We also found that because many Polish citizens believe that helping those in need should not rest solely on the government there are two main motivations to volunteer: a general willingness to help and the willingness to volunteer on behalf of Ukrainian refugees. Finally, while this study highlights that in times of crisis, most people are primarily motivated by humanistic and democratic values, including altruism and public service, emotions also play an important role in influencing people's decision to engage in voluntary service.
