Abstract:
In 1986 a donation of books deriving from the library of A. J. B. Wace was presented to the Australian Archaeological Institute at Athens. It was Wace's habit to keep some of his correspondence with scholars and friends in books either written by those scholars or closely connected with their work. Over fifty letters and other papers were tucked away in eight volumes, mostly dating from 1946–51 though including some earlier items. The correspondence deals with a wide range of subjects of some archaeological and historical interest, and includes several letters from Ernst Meyer, here transcribed in full. The correspondence is catalogued here, and indexes are provided.

A Review of: Burke, L. “Models of Reference Services in Australian Academic Libraries.” Journal of Librarianship and Information Science 40.4 (2008): 269-86. Objective – To investigate the current organizational models for reference work in Australian academic libraries, and how these reference services are staffed. Design – Mixed methods. Setting – Academic universities in Australia. Subjects – Forty Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL) member libraries. Methods – A literature study was undertaken to (1) find a definition of reference services and (2) explore the development of reference service models over time. Statistics from the CAUL member libraries were studied for trends in student population and number of academic and library staff. A web-based survey, with questions based on the findings in the literature study, was then distributed to the 40 Australian university libraries in 2006. Respondents were asked when the library commenced different reference services in five areas: formats in which the library received and responded to reference queries, information literacy, subject specialization, liaison activities, and collection development. Respondents also answered questions about the organization of the reference department, including: whether they had a separate or integrated model; the size of the reference collections; if they had a librarian dedicated to supporting students studying in remote or distant mode; if the interlibrary loans department was part of the suite of reference services; and if they had a mission or statement of purpose for their reference services department. Main Results – Based on the literature study, the working definition of reference services (1) for the project was “all activities which assist in providing relevant and appropriate information services to patrons” (270), including: • All interactions with patrons to assist them in their searches for information in all media types. • All training by librarians of patrons to be able to access information for themselves. • Activities to help the library stay informed of relevant developments, such as establishing and maintaining relationships with patrons. The literature study also revealed (2) a shift from the traditional reference service model, focused on the reference desk and the services delivered from that location, to new models involving “consolidation of reference service points, establishment of tiered reference, reference by appointment, reorganization of reference departments, and limiting services to primary users” (271). The core aspects of reference services have changed little over time, including face-to-face reference work, print collection development, bibliographic instruction, and attending meetings. In some aspects, however, there has been a shift in emphasis, e.g., in bibliographic instruction from the teaching of tools to the teaching of information literacy. In addition, reference work has come to include “going out to users,” or academic liaison work, as well as research consultation as a general way to assist undergraduate student in getting started on assignments and projects. The Web-based survey (n=40, response rate 87.5%) showed that 32.4% of libraries have an integrated inquiry point which incorporates information queries and other queries that are not necessarily related to traditional library reference services (272, Table 1). This survey result supports the findings of the literature study in showing a trend of library services moving away from the traditional reference desk. A majority of the responding libraries still retained a separate reference department, but a significant number of libraries have developed departments incorporating reference services with other library services. Those that retained the separate department varied in how they described services to patrons, the most common name being Information Services, a more user-friendly and descriptive name. In staffing the reference service, the respondents were asked to indicate the classification level of their staff using the Higher Education Worker (HEW) scale (an Australian salary scale, based on competencies, minimum 1 / maximum 10). Staff spans a variety of levels (4-10), the most common level being HEW6, a level where all libraries had staff. This indicates that a large part of reference staff in Australian academic libraries are highly qualified. The shift in higher education, resulting in greater numbers of students and fewer staff (including librarians), has in many libraries resulted in a more flexible organization of reference services, and the utilization of staff from other sections of the library for manning the reference service point. There is also evidence of how the changing student population leads to changing demands for library facilities and services, e.g. a decrease in the traditional complex reference questions, as well as in over the counter loan transactions, and an increase in more general queries. Conclusion – Reference services in Australian academic libraries are becoming more flexible and integrated (although the definition for integrated is still unclear), in part as the result of client demand, and in part due to decreased funding. The author sees an emerging role for reference librarians in helping patrons to navigate the increasingly complex information environment, and to assist in developing the skills to critically evaluate the information they access for authoritativeness and appropriateness.

A Review of: Salisbury, F., & Karasmanis, S. (2011). Are they ready? Exploring student information literacy skills in the transition from secondary to tertiary education. Australian Academic & Research Libraries, 42(1), 43-58. Objective – To determine what existing information literacy skills first year students possess upon entering university. Design – Quantitative survey questionnaire. Setting – A research university in Australia. Subjects – 1,029 first year students in the health sciences. Methods – First year students enrolled in the health sciences were asked to complete a paper questionnaire in their first week of classes in 2009. The 20 question survey was distributed in student tutorial groups. The first 10 questions collected information on student demographics, expected library use, and existing information seeking behaviour. The remaining 10 questions tested students’ understanding of information literacy concepts. Data collected from the survey were analyzed using the statistical software SPSS. Main Results – Most of the students who responded to the questionnaire were between the ages of 16 and 21 (84.3%) with only 2.2% over the age of 40. Approximately 15% of respondents had completed some postsecondary university or vocational education prior to enrolling in their current program. The students ranked Google, a friend, and a book as the top three places they would go to find information on something they knew little about. Google was also the most popular choice for finding a scholarly article (35% of respondents), followed by the library catalogue (21%). A large proportion of students correctly answered questions relating to identifying appropriate search terms. For example, one third of the students selected the correct combination of search concepts for a provided topic, and 77% identified that the choice of search phrase could negatively impact search results. Students also demonstrated prior knowledge of the Boolean operator AND, with 38% correctly identifying its use in the related question. Most students were also able to identify key markers of a website’s credibility. Questions relating to ethical information use and scholarly literature proved more challenging. Almost half (45%) of the students said that they did not know the characteristics of a peer reviewed journal article. Twenty five percent of respondents indicated that citing an information source was only necessary in the case of direct quotes, with only 28% correctly identifying the need for citing both quotes and paraphrasing. Only 23% were able to select the example of a journal citation from the list presented. Conclusion – Students enter university with existing strengths in concept identification and basic search formulation, but require the most assistance with locating and identifying scholarly literature and how to cite it appropriately in their work. The findings will inform the development of an online information literacy assessment tool to assist incoming students in identifying areas where they may require additional support as they transition to university.

Abstract:
This study examines the influence of Friends groups on public library policy in the UK, in order to investigate ways of involving Friends groups in library policymaking. The methodology of a grounded theory, and a semi-structured interview method, were used for the study. Fifty interviews were carried out with Friends group members, library staff and managers, and councillors in five councils in England. There were more respondents who agreed than disagreed with Friends groups being allowed to influence library policy. The present groups have influenced many policy areas, such as policy on opening hours, decisions on library closure and building a new library, and library rules and regulations. They have exerted an influence on these areas mainly through campaigns or lobbying. However, there were also respondents who had personal concerns about the strong influence of Friends groups, particularly through these activities. They did not approve of these activities as being the ideal method of Friends groups to get involved in library policy. This is because these activities caused conflicts between Friends groups and library authorities or councillors. The respondents who had many experiences of such conflicts perceived Friends groups to be unrepresentative of library users and the community. Influential groups, which had an impact on library policy, were born as influential groups. They were formed with unique managerial elements, such as simple and clear goals, spontaneous establishment, strong leadership, a well-structured and active committee, and strong membership power, i.e. having many professionals and famous people as their members, such as politicians, artists, writers, and celebrities. The majority of the respondents agreed with the establishment of a British National Friends of Libraries organisation (NFOL), and considered its role in enhancing the operation of Friends groups, in supporting library services, and in campaigning to the government. However, many respondents did not recognise the fact that the Library Campaign (LC) had become a new' British NFOL, and many group members did not have much information about the LC. Consequently, the study suggests that the LC publicise itself more actively and that Cilip support the publicity of the LC. The study revealed that consultation is the most sensible method of getting Friends groups involved in library policy. Accordingly, the study suggests that Friends groups, library management, and councillors make guidelines for consultation. The study concludes that Friends groups could successfully operate and get effectively involved in library policy, if: together with library management they create some guidelines for the operation of Friends groups; they invite professionals and famous people to their group; and they maintain good communication with their members, the community, library staff, councillors, and also the local media.

The short feature has emerged intermittently since the late 1980s and has been vulnerable to the conditions of the Australian film industry in general. Government renewed its support for the short feature in the 1990s viewing it as a development model for writers, directors and producers making the transition from short form drama to feature length production. While there is no doubt that the short feature model provides invaluable 'experience through practice' for writers, directors and producers, a lack of market demand, its continued dependence on government funding and the mixed development outcomes of those it supports suggests that the future of the short feature remains unclear. This thesis also includes School Friends, a 50-minute screenplay designed specifically to suit the parameters of short feature production. It is a redemption story about a man who attempts to get his life back on track after being released from prison.

Recent reforms to the higher education sector are presenting challenges for academic staff and university administrators across Australia. Within this context, LIS education faces its own specific issues and challenges. This paper reviews the current trends in the LIS education, looking at student numbers, aca-demic staffing and curriculum issues. Education providers also need to consider the career-long learning needs of the profession. It is argued that LIS educators cannot work in isolation: the LIS profession as whole must work together collaboratively to ensure it has a bright and relevant future.

The thesis examines those students in the department of Information Studies at Curtin University of Technology who have articulated into the Bachelor of Applied Science (Information and Library Studies) through holding an Associate Diploma which qualifies them as paraprofessional library technicians.An analysis of students in the department over a period of ten years examines the number and characteristics of library technicians upgrading their qualifications and compares the academic performance of articulating students with those who have no previous qualifications in librarianship. This examination reveals little difference in the academic performance of the two groups. Interviews with academic staff and students reveal attitudes towards articulation, articulating students, education and the relationship between the professional and paraprofessional levels in librarianship which will need to be taken into account in future curricula and course development.

The history and development of the education and training of library Technicians in Australia is currently recorded in the literature in a piecemeal und uncoordinated manner. The aim of this research is to provide a current and coherent account of the history and development of courses, examine the role of major stakeholders and identify the major issues that have accompanied the evolution of education and training for paraprofessional library staff. A comprehensive chronicle of the education and training of library technicians will contribute to the research and literature of Library and information science in Australia. The research will examine: • why formal education and training courses for library technicians were introduced in Australia; • how education and training courses have developed and evolved in response to library industry workplace changes from 1970 to 2000; • what role the professional organisation, the Library Association of Australia, and its successor, the Australian Library and Information Association, has played in the education and training of library technicians; and • what impact government policy on vocational education and training has had, and continues to have, on the training of library technicians. An extensive examination and analysis of existing primary and secondary information sources, including books, journal articles, conference proceedings, government publications, online and Internet documents and TAFE course documentation was conducted in the course of this study. While the methodology was generally restricted to an examination of documentation available in published sources, it was supplemented with personal communication with relevant individuals and institutions where necessary.

Abstract:
After an initial Interrogation of the theory of professions and historical writing, this study examined three major phases in the development of professional and paraprofesslonal library occupations in Australia. The early professionalising phase from the 1930s onwards where the Australian Institute of Librarians took control of education for librarianship was analysed In detail. Issues crucial to the understanding of subsequent development included the inequalities of library provision and funding, publicised by the Munn-Pitt Report of 1935 and reiterated by a series of later international consultants; conflict and contestation between librarians from different areas of the library and information sector; a lack of occupational status and measures undertaken to imrrove that status In the face of an Increasing femlnisation of the workforce. In a move to improve the status of librarians, the senior university librarians who dominated the Association's educational processes decided graduate qualifications would be essential. Although the Institute and later Library Association of Australia had evinced little interest In the education of 'non professional' or 'subprofesslonal' library workers, staff shortages In a time of higher funding levels resulted In the Victorian Branch of the Association sponsoring the first library technicians' course in 1970. As similar courses became available, the Association acted to ensure portabllity of qualifications and to enforce uniform educational standards.

Abstract:
In her book Decolonising Solidarity: Dilemmas and Directions for Supporters of Indigenous Struggles, Clare Land suggest how non-Indigenous people might develop new frameworks supporting Indigenous struggles. Land argues research is deeply implicated with processes of colonisation and the appropriation of indigenous knowledge. Given that architectural archives are central to the research of architectural history, how might these archives be decolonised? This paper employs two disparate archives to develop a framework of how architectural archivists might begin to decolonise these archives. Firstly, these archives are the Grounds Romberg and Boyd Archive (GRB) at the State Library of Victoria (SLV). Secondly, the Greg Burgess Archive is now located at Avington, Sidonia in Victoria. The materials from each of these archives will be discussed in relation to two frameworks. These are the Tandanya-Adelaide Declaration endorsed by The Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and the Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) framework developed by Janke (2019). These archival frameworks suggest how interconnected architectural histories and historiographies might be read, reframed and restored. Decolonising architectural archives will require a continuous process of reflection and political engagement with collections and archives. In pursuing these actions, archivists and architectural historians can begin to participate in the indigenous Reworlding of the archive.

The distress of bereaved fathers remained inadequately understood since most of the existing studies had concentrated mainly on the mothers’ experience. This scoping review aimed to investigate the fathers’ experience on the incident of newborn death. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selec­tion; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The research question was identified using population, exposure, and outcome(s) (PEOS) framework. The search included PubMed, Wiley Online Library, Science Direct, ProQuest, EBSCO, gray literature through the Google Scholar search engine databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and primary studied full-text articles published between 2010 and 2019. A total of 307 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, seven articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: A total of 307 articles were obtained by the searched databases. After screening, 55,052 articles were excluded because of 54,847 articles with irrelevant topics, 22 book review articles, and 183 duplicate articles. Of the remaining 88 articles, only 18 articles met the inclusion criteria. After conducting critical appraisal, a total of six articles from developed countries (Australia, Sweden, Spain, and Columbia) with qualitative studies was selected to further review. This review emphasized three main topics about experiences of fathers after the death of the newborn, namely psychological conditions and coping behaviors of fathers, and supportive care from health professionals. Conclusion: Further support and care of health professionals need to focus on fathers’ experience of grief following newborn death, especially on their physical and mental well-being. This scoping review aimed to identify the partner violence screening practices of community-based health care providers in pregnant women. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selec­tion; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The search included PubMed, Science Direct, EBSCO, Wiley Online Library, and ProQuest databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2010 and 2020. A total of 580 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, eight articles were eligible for this review. The critical appraisal for searched articles were measured by Mix Methods Appraisal Tools (MMAT). The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Two articles from developing countries (Zimbabwe and Kenya) and six articles from developed countries (Australia, Norway, Italy, and Sweden) met the inclusion criteria with a mixed-method, qualitative, and quantitative (cross-sectional) studies. The existing studies revealed that violence screening in pregnant women was effective to increase awareness of violence by their partners. Screening practice had an empowering effect on women to disclose the violence experienced. Barriers to the health care providers performing partner violence screening included: lack of knowledge, experience and training, confidence in undertaking the screening, taboo cultural practices, and absence of domestic violence screening policies. Conclusion: Partner violence screening practice should be strongly considered at antenatal care visits. Further insights of community-based health care providers are required to perform effective screening. The inclusion criteria were English/ Indonesian-language and full-text articles in peer-reviewed journals published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 543,111 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, six articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Six articles from developed countries (Australia, Sweden, Singapore, Israel, and England) met the inclusion criteria with qualitative and quantitative (cross-sectional) studies. Three main aspects discussed were support, challenges, and psychological conditions of experience of husbands during labor time of pregnancy. Support of husbands was identified as physical and moral. Challenges faced by husbands included lack of preparedness, knowledge, and encouragement from health care professionals. Psychological conditions of satisfaction and concern were found in husbands’ transition to fatherhood. Conclusion: Responsibility, emotion, experience, and barrier of husbands are related to maternal health problems. Better involvement of fathers will be able to enhance better quality of relationships and family health through understanding, experience, and assistance, especially in the childbirth process. This scoping review aimed to investigate the appropriate method of sex education and information for adolescents. Subjects and Method: A scoping review method was conducted in eight stages including (1) Identification of study problems; (2) Determining priority problem and study question; (3) Determining framework; (4) Literature searching; (5) Article selec­tion; (6) Critical appraisal; (7) Data extraction; and (8) Mapping. The research question was identified using population, exposure, and outcome(s) (PEOS) framework. The search included PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley Online Library, ProQuest, and EBSCO databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 460 articles was obtained from the searched database. After the review process, twenty articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Eleven articles from developing countries (Nigeria, Thailand, Iran, California, Vietnam, Spain, South Africa, Indonesia) and nine articles from developed countries (USA, England, Australia) met the inclusion criteria with quantitative (cross-sectional, quasi-experiments, cohort, RCT) and qualitative design studies. The findings discussed available sources of sex education for adolescents including peers, school, media, and other adults. Digital media (internet and TV) contributed as preferable sources for adolescents. The parents and teacher’s involvement in providing sex education remained inadequate. Inappropriate sources of sex education like invalid information from the internet and other adults caused negative consequences on the sexual and reproductive health of children and adolescents. Conclusion: Parents-school partnership strategies play an important role in delivering appropriate information about sex education for children and adolescents. The research question was identified using population, exposure, and outcome(s) (PEOS) framework. The search included Wiley Online Library, EBSCO, ProQuest, and PubMed databases. The inclusion criteria were English-language and full-text articles published between 2009 and 2019. A total of 307 articles were obtained by the searched database. After the review process, seven articles were eligible for this review. The data were reported by the PRISMA flow chart. Results: Six articles from developing countries (Brazil, Mexico, Zambia, Malawi, and Romania) and one report from developed countries (Australia) met the inclusion criteria with qualitative, quantitative (cross-sectional), and descriptive studies. The existing studies stated that adolescent pregnancy had adverse effects on both mother and babies’ health and well-being. Young maternal age is associated with low parity, lack of prenatal care, premature, and low birth weight. Factors contributed to the increased adolescent pregnancy rate were early sexual initiation, low use of contraception, low educational level, low socioeconomic status, inadequate knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, and gender disparity. Conclusion: Young maternal age contributes to adverse pregnancy outcomes of both mothers and babies. Early sexual health education and health promotion on teenage girls may reduce the risk of adolescent pregnancy rates. Abstract:
For the first time, one of the popular children’s magazines of the Western Ukrainian Diaspora “Young Friends” became the subject of research. Founded in March 1955, it ceased to exist in 1984. There is no complete filing of this newspaper in any book collection of Ukraine, it has not been digitized yet, the editorial office did not have a site. For this reason, the author conducted a study of this journal in the library-archive of the Union of Ukrainians in Great Britain (UUB) in London. The peculiarities of journal formation and the specifics of the editorial policy are clarified. The experience of publishing a Ukrainian children’s magazine abroad for a long time (in color and on chalk paper) without any financial support from the state, but only by public money, is quite instructive for the current situation in Ukraine when children’s periodicals have almost disappeared from the national information space due to indifferent contemplation of the state.

In the article investigational three magazines which went out after Second World war in Germany and Austria in the environment of the Ukrainian emigrants, is «Theater» (edition of association of artists of the Ukrainian stage), «Student flag» (a magazine of the Ukrainian academic young people is in Austria), «Young friends» (a plastoviy magazine is for senior children and youth). The thematic structure of magazines, which is inferior the association of different on age, is considered, by vital experience and professional orientation of people in the conditions of the forced emigration, paid regard to graphic registration of magazines, which, without regard to absence of the proper publisher-polydiene bases, marked structuralness and expressiveness. A repertoire of periodicals of Ukrainian migration is in the American, English and French areas of occupation of Germany and Austria after Second world war, which consists of 200 names, strikes the tipologichnoy vseokhopnistyu and testifies to the high intellectual level of the moved persons, desire of yaknaynovishe, to realize the considerable potential in new terms with hope on transference of the purchased experience to Ukraine. On ruins of Europe for two-three years the network of the press, which could be proud of the European state is separately taken, is created. Different was a period of their appearance: from odnogo-dvokh there are to a few hundred numbers, that it is related to intensive migration of Ukrainians to the USA, Canada, countries of South America, Australia. But indisputable is a fact of forming of conceptions of newspapers and magazines, which it follows to study, doslidzhuvati and adjust them to present Ukrainian realities. Here not superfluous will be an example of a few editions on the thematic range of which the names – «Plastun» specify, «Skob», «Mali druzi», «Sonechko», «Yunackiy shliah», «Iyzhak», «Lys Mykyta» (satire, humour), «Literaturna gazeta», «Ukraina і svit», «Ridne slovo», «Hrystyianskyi shliah», «Golos derzhavnyka», «Ukrainskyi samostiynyk», «Gart», «Zmag» (sport), «Litopys politviaznia», «Ukrains’ka shkola», «Torgivlia i promysel», «Gospodars’ko-kooperatyvne zhyttia», «Ukrainskyi gospodar», «Ukrainskyi esperantist», «Radiotehnik», «Politviazen’», «Ukrainskyi selianyn» Considering three riznovektorni magazines «Teatr» (edition of Association Mistciv the Ukrainian Stage), «Studentskyi prapor» (a magazine of the Ukrainian academic young people is in Austria), «Yuni druzi» (a plastoviy magazine is for senior children and youth) assert that maintenance all three magazines directed on creation of different on age and by the professional orientation of national associations for achievement of the unique purpose – cherishing and maintainance of environments of ukrainstva, identity, in the conditions of strange land. Without regard to unfavorable publisher-polydiene possibilities, absence of financial support and proper encouragement, release, followed the intensive necessity of concentration of efforts for achievement of primary purpose – receipt and re-erecting of the Ukrainian State.
