Abstract:
In this article, deploying Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique and the fictional American icon Betty Crocker within a poststructural feminist analysis, the author analyzes a social science data set investigating how 18 contemporary wives think about wifehood. Crocker and Friedan are emblematic of the cultural DNA that make up wifehood: The mythical Betty Crocker represents the happy, traditional housewife of the 1950s, and Betty Friedan offers a critique of the happy, traditional housewife figure. Thinking about historical trends, in the 1950s to 1960s, femininity and families were rigidly prescribed and, thus, largely unquestioned. In the 21st century, with the influx of postfeminism, prescriptions for femininity and families are thought to be less rigid—but are they? Contemporary wives’ identity negotiations mapped onto both Betty Crocker and Betty Friedan but remained anchored in the Betty Crocker image.

Abstract:
When asked to reflect on the role of feminist criticism today, i immediately recalled the recent deaths of Betty Friedan and Andrea Dworkin. Friedan and Dworkin join an unfortunately growing list of well-known feminist thinkers who have died over the last few years. The passing of Friedan and Dworkin makes us think about the feminism they represented and indeed about the history of feminist thought itself, its ebbs and flows, its metaphoric births and deaths. Ideas, after all, are as living as people, with periods of growth, maturity, and decline.

Abstract:

Abstract:

On an April morning in 1959, I heard a mother of four, having coffee with four other mothers in a suburban development fifteen miles from New York, say in a tone of quiet desperation, ‘the problem.’ And the others knew, without words, that she was not talking about a problem with her husband, or her children, or her home. Suddenly they realized they all shared the same problem, the problem that has no name. (Friedan, 1963: 15)1

Abstract:
For centuries, women have been struggling to establish their place in the society and fight for their rights as becoming an equal to men. This article, presents an analysis on the female characters - Portia and Calpurnia of Rome, in Julius Caesar. The play was written by William Shakespeare who based his story on the historical events of Ancient Rome. Making use of Wollstonecraft and Friedans theories, this article aims at examining to what extent the struggles of women are reflected and presented in the play. The struggles of the female characters are intrinsically concerned with the play and extrinsically relates to the condition of women in Ancient Rome. Upon analyzing, it becomes clear that Roman women had less rights and privileges than men and were considered inferior to men. Women in Roman were seen as weak, feeble and unworthy. Although feminism is not even heard of in Shakespeares time, through studying Wollstonecraft and Friedans theories, Portia and Calpurnias struggle can be considered as the springing of feminists actions.

Abstract:
This article is an overview toward a play of an American dramatist, William Inge. In this case, the play is viewed from gender perspective as considered 'quite representative' to reveal what Friedan (1995) stated as polarisation of men and women. The writer wants to depict the representation of men and women in the play as the central issue affecting the result of this analysis. In addition, the term gender should be understood as an umbrella term pervading the whole discussion. To what extent the verification of the polarisation may analytically come as the conclusion.

Abstract:
We present the gauge invariant free, open Ramond string field theory. Our construction is based on the non-nilpotent part of the true BRS charge. We argue that this truncated charge contains the information sufficient for restoring gauge invariance. By summing all auxiliary fields we are able to close the algebra and discover the new structure consisting of new guage invariant field strengths obeying the special set of Bianchi identities. This structure can be put in the standard BRS framework showing the relation between Yamrons and Banks, Friedan, Martinec, Peskin and Preitschopfs, Ramond actions. We also discuss other formulations of the model, including one proposed by Witten.

Abstract:
As the Women’s Liberation Movement developed in the 1970s, women challenged society’s limited female representation as either the Madonna or the whore. Musicals in the 1970s, including Grease (1972), Chicago (1975) and Evita (1979), complicated the female image through the juxtaposition of feminine stereotypes in the heroine’s persona. With each of the shows centralizing the plot around analysing the contradictory feminine image, the women perform in both public and private settings, along with other characters critiquing their personas. From feminist protesters to the writings of Simone de Beauvoir and Betty Friedan, Sandy, Roxie and Eva reflect the requests of contemporary women to display their gender as something beyond the perceived dichotomy of Madonna or whore in their music performances.

Abstract:

Abstract:
We continue the study of quantum Liouville theory through Polyakov’s functional integral,1,2 started in Ref. 3. We derive the perturbation expansion for Schwinger’s generating functional for connected multi-point correlation functions involving stress-energy tensor, give the “dynamical” proof of the Virasoro symmetry of the theory and compute the value of the central charge, confirming previous calculation in Ref. 3. We show that conformal Ward identities for these correlation functions contain such basic facts from Kähler geometry of moduli spaces of Riemann surfaces, as relation between accessory parameters for the Fuchsian uniformization, Liouville action and Eichler integrals, Kähler potential for the Weil-Petersson metric, and local index theorem. These results affirm the fundamental role that universal Ward identities for the generating functional play in Friedan-Shenker modular geometry.4

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to examine the actualization of women in the novel My Lecturer My Husband by Gitlicious by relying on the formulation put forward by Betty Friedan. The depiction of the minimal role of women in literary production means that female characters in literary works are often portrayed as biased and one-sided. Therefore, it is essential to discuss women's experiences through women authors' works because they have direct experience in describing women's lives. This research is a type of qualitative descriptive research that uses documentation techniques and literature studies as a data collection method. Meanwhile, the data analysis technique used was interactive, including data reduction techniques, presentation, and verification. This study shows that women experience an identity crisis because they often surrender to the situation. Circumstances that require Inggit's character to be at a certain point so that she feels have to return to their nature.

Abstract:
Women are often deprived of their rights based on sexual orientation, gender identity, or sex characteristics. Betty Friedan thinks patriarchal culture makes women too passive, do not think independently, and do not work for themselves. In addition, women are often trapped in feminine mystique, meaning that they are only fixated on the demands of serving their husbands and doing domestic chores. The novel Dominicana by Angie Cruz talks about Ana (the main female character) trapped in a feminine mystique. That novel is the primary source of data in this study. The aims are to find out how feminine mystique is presented in the novel and explain Ana's efforts to get out of these issues. The researcher uses a feminist literary criticism as an approach and applies Betty Friedan's feminine mystique theory. Thus, the results of this study indicate that Ana did not get her rights as a woman and only did domestic chores without having access to public sphere. Therefore, she made various efforts, such as against her husband, finding a part-time job, joining an English class, and revealing her husband's affair. However, the researcher only focuses on the main female character, to discuss the Feminine Mystique that she experiences and the resistance she does. In future research, the researcher hopes that many will analyze this novel as an object of study in literary criticism. Many literary criticism theories and approaches can be used to analyze this novel, such as psychoanalysis, historicism, structuralism, and sociology of literature. Future researchers can also examine this novel with the same approach by choosing different theoretical references.

Abstract:
The last half-dozen years have witnessed an outpouring of Brazilian publications, both rigorous academic studies and popular essays, on women and their roles and activities within Brazilian society. Since the late 1970s, publishers and educated audiences have demonstrated an active interest in works on women that contrasts sharply with the hostile reception accorded Betty Friedan and the Brazilian translation of her Feminine Mystique in 1971. What was once a subject for ridicule has become a timely topic. In 1980 a compendium of the year's nonfiction titles revealed more books listed under the heading of feminism than under biology or botany, and almost as many as under anthropology or cooking.1 The expanding publications on socially determined sex roles have accompanied the development of a small, but active, feminist movement and a general increase in publishing activities in Brazil as the “redemocratization” process gains strength and readers seek more information on previously forbidden topics.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The essay addresses contemporary discussions on women?s transnationalism and women?s agency by looking at the first conference of the UN Decade for Women held in Mexico City in 1975, and at its specific embedding in Cold War geopolitics. Through an engagement with different feminist and activists voices, and particularly with the less visible anti-imperialist, Non-Aligned and socialist genealogies of women?s activism expressed during the meeting, the essay argues that the paradigm of Western feminist knowledge production needs to be revisited, in order to encompass multiple forms of women?s political agency that are not expressed through the liberal framework of women?s individual autonomy from the state. By juxtaposing Betty Friedan?s and Vida Tomsic?s stances during the Mexico City event, the paper shows that women?s political agency during the Cold War era took different forms, which included both the refusal and the acceptance of women?s activism within existing national and international institutions.

Abstract:
While there has been an increasing amount of discussion around feminism, the relationship and controversies between motherhood and feminism has been relatively overlooked. Taking on a new perspective of films, this paper explores the relationship between motherhood and feminism through the content analysis of empirical research and the movie Suffragette (2015). Examining theories from feminists such as Adrienne Rich, Shulamith Firestone, and Betty Friedan, this paper includes a supportive relationship, which is motherhood acting as a cause for feminism, a neutral relationship, which is the two being balanced and rather loosely connected, as well as a negative relationship, which is motherhood hindering and oppressing women. This paper concludes that while it is arguable that motherhood can be a hinder towards feminism, there is more evidence both in real-life and in the movie showing a supportive and neutral relationship. Thus, this encourages future researchers and feminists to more actively include motherhood in its activities considering their positive relationship.

Abstract:
In many situations, it is women who are instead given stereotypes and a double burden, as women's reproductive roles are seen as static and permanent. The increase in the number of women working in the public sphere does not reduce their workload in the domestic sphere. This article aims to demonstrate the phenomena of stereotypes and double burdens with women in the novel La Femme Gelée written by Annie Ernaux. The research is carried out using the descriptive-qualitative method. In the form of words, sentences, and paragraphs, the data is taken from the novel analyzed using documentation. The data is then classified, identified, and studied using the feminist critic's approach by practicing theories from Beauvoir, Butler, Humm, and Friedan. The result shows that stereotypes and the double burden suffered by women are a form of injustice due to gender inequalities. Despite the idea that, like the man, the woman also has the right to express herself and build her career, the novel shows that the patriarchal structure already positions women marginally, making it difficult to change it.
