Abstract:
In this thesis I explore the significance of the publication of Betty Friedan�s The Feminine Mystique (1963) to the emergence of the second wave Women�s Liberation Movement in the US in the late 1960s. To this end, I deploy key concepts provided through social movement theory (eg collective identity, collective action frames, social problem construction). I also incorporate Max Weber and Antonio Gramsci�s insights on the indispensable role played by leaders who demonstrate a clear and effective political will. Weber�s three part model of pure charisma is used as a general template for understanding the impact of Friedan�s text. I critique aspects of Weber�s theory of charisma, in particular his failure to appreciate that the written word can mark the initial emergence phase of charisma rather than its routinisation. I augment Weber�s insights on charismatic leadership by attending to Gramsci�s emphasis on the necessity of winning the �war of ideas� that must be waged at the level of civil society within advanced capitalist societies. I examine Gramsci�s understanding of the power available to the organic intellectual who is aligned with the interests of subaltern groups and who succeeds in revealing the hegemonic commitments of accepted �common sense�. In the latter part of this thesis, I apply these many useful concepts to my case study analysis of Betty Friedan�s The Feminine Mystique. I argue that Friedan�s accessible, middlebrow text gave birth to a new discursive politics which was critically important not only for older women, but for a younger generation of more radicalised women. I emphasise how Friedan�s text mounted a concerted attack on the discursive construction of femininity under patriarchal capitalism. I question Friedan�s diagnostic claim that the problems American women faced were adequately captured by the terminology of the trapped housewife syndrome. I conclude by arguing that social movement researchers have to date failed to appreciate the leadership potential of the charismatic author-leader who succeeds in addressing and offering a solution to a pressing social problem through the medium of a best-selling, middlebrow text.

Abstract:
My thesis examines the role that Ladies Home Journal played in challenging the ideals of domesticity that emerged in the postwar period in the United States. Originally founded in 1883, Ladies Home Journal emerged from World War II as the most popular and highly circulated women’s magazine. Husband and wife duo Bruce and Beatrice Gould served as co-editors-in-chief from 1935 to 1962, and populated the magazine with numerous ambitious and talented female writers and editors. Many of these female staff members also married and had children, while maintaining their careers. During an era where employees discriminated against women in the workplace, Ladies Home Journal employed women and published numerous articles supporting women in the workplace. In 1963, Betty Friedan claimed that women’s magazines only perpetuated the idealized, feminine housewife, but I argue that her argument oversimplifies the complexities women’s magazines represented during the 1950s. Divided intro three chapters, I analyze the shifting working conditions for women between the 1940s and 1950s, then unearth the working culture of Ladies Home Journal during the postwar period through an analysis of the editors, writers, and articles. Lastly, I examine three female journalists, Dorothy Thompson, Betty Hannah Hoffman, and Maureen Daly who all regularly contributed to the Journal.

El feminismo como teoría crítica y movimiento social tiene siglos de historia. Con vaivenes, con sus conquistas y sus retrocesos, la teoría feminista ha logrado insertar en el orden social una reflexión y acción frente a la dominación masculina, siempre desde la producción teórica consciente y polémica. En esa lid se inserta este trabajo, cuyo propósito es aportar elementos teóricos para la construcción del sujeto político del feminismo, en una perspectiva institucional; es decir, desde el Estado. Para ello, se desarrolla una aproximación al sujeto del feminismo que reúne las aportaciones de los feminismos liberal, radical, postmoderno y postestructuralista, con el objeto de reconocer subjetividades nuevas, distintas y cambiantes, a partir de las cuales insertar el feminismo en el Estado. Ello se compromete con dos cuestiones que están presentes a lo largo de todo este trabajo: por un lado, la importancia de la dimensión polémica en la construcción de las identidades colectivas –de allí la necesidad de detenernos en el dominio de lo político– y, por otro, el desafío de traer estas diversas formas de vida, envueltas en la categoría mujeres, a una forma jurídica. Con el afán de formular una alternativa teórica al segundo de los compromisos señalados, se propone una lectura de la noción de movimiento teorizada por el jurista alemán Carl Schmitt en 1933.

Die vorliegende Studie konzentriert sich auf die deutsch-israelischen Beziehungen im Feld des humanitären und friedensstiftenden Vor-Ort-Einsatzes. Dabei nimmt die Arbeit die verwickelten und konflikthaften Beziehungen im Bemühen der Politik um Normalität des deutsch-israelischen Verhältnisses in den Blick, ein Bemühen, das durch die historische Einzigartigkeit der Shoa immer schon unmöglich ist. Bestimmt wird die Perspektive der Untersuchung nicht von den vorherrschenden Paradigmen des Forschungsfeldes Internationale Beziehungen, sondern anhand zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements, das sich u.a. in der Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste ausdrückt. Dabei wird eine dezidiert akteurzentrierte Position eingenommen und mit Hilfe der Analysen von Makro-, Meso- und Mikroebenen, welche aufeinander bezogen werden, historische Darstellung, politiktheoretische Perspektiven mit kulturwissenschaftlichen Dimensionen verknüpft und für die transdisziplinäre Darstellung fruchtbar gemacht. Dargelegt wird, in welchem Spannungsfeld von unterschiedlichen politischen Interessen, sozialen Prozessen und historischen Diskursen sich die Aktivitäten deutscher NGOs in Israel bewegen und wie diese Spannungen auch das Selbstverständnis und die angestrebten Ziele einzelner Akteure maßgeblich beeinflussen. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die vielseitigen Interessenkonflikte zwischen der NGO Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste und ihren israelischen Partnern in teilweise dominierenden bipolar ausgerichteten Diskursen gründen, welche neben den ethnischen, religiösen, sozialen und politischen Dimensionen auch immer eine übergreifende moralische Dimension inkludieren. Diese Aushandlungsprozesse im lokalen Einsatz der hier thematisierten NGO sind daher unweigerlich von der kollektiven historischen Erinnerung an die Shoah geprägt, die sich sowohl auf die Handlungsspielräume der deutschen NGO als auch auf die gesamten zwischenstaatlichen deutsch-israelischen Beziehungen auswirkt und daher die erhoffte Normalisierung im Sinne rein politischer Raison nicht realisierbar erscheinen lässt. Die Problematik der Auseinandersetzungen um Universalismus und Partikularismus der Shoah-Rezeption lassen sich somit auf staatlicher sowie zivilgesellschaftlicher Ebene nicht gänzlich auflösen. Die aus diesen unterschiedlichen Rezeptionen zu ziehenden Rückschlüsse ermöglichen es den Akteuren gänzlich unterschiedliche Perspektiven in der Arbeit vor Ort einzunehmen. Die Streitigkeiten zwischen „Sühne“ und „Frieden“ dominieren daher immer noch die Diskurse in- und außerhalb der Organisation.

Abstract:
We study the expansion of the universe on a deSitter 3-brane in a warped codimension-two brane model. We use analytical and numerical methods to solve the jump conditions and quantify the deviations of the Friedmann equation from its standard form. The radion must be stabilized in this model, and it is shown that the magnitude of the deviations is controlled by the radion mass, though in a quantitatively different way from codimension-one brane models. We also examine the effect of the modified expansion rate on inflation driven by fields on the brane.
Nous étudions l'expansion de l'univers sur un desitter 3-brane dans un modèle déformé de brane de dimension 2. Nous employons des méthodes analytiques et numériques pour résoudre les conditions de saut et pour mesurer les déviations de l'équation de Friedmann a partir de son format standard. Le radion doit être stabilisé dans ce modèle, et on démontre que l'importance des déviations est commandée par la masse de radion, cependant de faéon quantitativement différente a partir de modèles de brane de dimension 1. Nous examinons également l'effet du taux modifié d'expansion sur l'inflation conduite par des champs sur le brane.

Abstract:
Stanley Friedman is a composer of many works, primarily for brass instruments, that have become part of the standard repertoire. Solus, for Trumpet Unaccompanied, for example, appears on many audition and competition lists, as do others of his works. On the other hand, Laude: Four Character Sketches for Solo Trumpet, commissioned by the International Trumpet Guild in 1980, is unfortunately not widely known among trumpet performers and educators. The intent of this study is to demonstrate, through discussion and analysis, the qualities and potential appeal of this lesser-known work and to renew interest in its performance. Among the six chapters is an overview of Laude, including an explanation of Friedman's peculiar titles for each movement: Nocturne for St. Thomas, Phantasie für Der Wiz, Berceuse for John Julius, and Rondo for Professor Nabob. Other chapters discuss the procedure for analysis of the work and probable sources for melodic material. The motivic development and form of each movement of the work are also explored. The final chapter includes recommendations for the performance of Laude and is followed by a summary and conclusion.

Resumo: Este trabalho examina os principais pontos de divergência entre os economistas Milton Friedman e Paul Davidson no que se refere ao papel da moeda, assim como a condução de suas políticas monetárias. O ponto de partida para essa análise é o fascinante debate de ideias entre os autores ocorrido no início da década de 1970 sobre o arcabouço teórico desenvolvido por Friedman, o qual prometia sepultar de uma vez por todas qualquer conflito entre economistas clássicos e "keynesianos". Embora o objetivo do monetarista tenha sido eliminar essas divergências, estas ficaram ainda mais evidentes a partir do debate direto entre os autores, deixando claro que o consenso entre eles nos moldes apresentados pelo debate não seria possível. Nesse sentido, o trabalho propõe um método alternativo para solucionar essa "disputa", ao apresentar o argumento de Sheila Dow, o qual sugere que as diferenças entre os economistas são resultado de suas também distintas posições metodológicas, as quais trazem implícitas as diferentes "visões de mundo" dos autores. Essas diferenças metodológicas são, portanto, a chave para compreender como Friedman e Davidson puderam atingir resultados tão contrastantes sobre dinheiro e política monetária
Abstract: This paper examines the main points of divergence between the economists Milton Friedman and Paul Davidson regarding the role of the money, as well as the conduct of their monetary policies. The starting point for this analysis is the fascinating debate of ideas among authors occurred at the beginning of the 1970s on the theoretical framework developed by Friedman, which promised bury once and for all any conflict between economists and classic "Keynesian". Although the objective of monetary policy has been to eliminate these differences, these were even more evident from the direct discussion between the authors, making it clear that the consensus between them in the manner presented by debate would not be possible. In this sense, the paper proposes an alternative method to resolve this "dispute", presenting the argument of Sheila Dow, which suggests that the differences between the economists are the result of their also distinct methodological positions, which brings the implied different "world views" of authors. These methodological differences are, therefore, the key to understanding how Friedman and Davidson could achieve results so contrasting on money and monetary policy

Práce poskytuje porovnání tří proudů liberálních proudů v ekonomickém myšlení 20. století, reprezentovaných osobami L. von Misese, F. A. Hayeka, a M. Friedmana. Obsahuje shrnutí a porovnání základních sociálních a ekonomických myšlenek a metodologických východisek probíraných autorů, jakož i přehled a analýzu názorů na klasický liberalismus, liberální politiku, funkci státu ve společnosti a monetární uspořádání. Detailněji jsou rozpracována jejich doporučení pro vládní politiku v oblasti alokace veřejných statků, školství, boje s chudobou, problematiky monopolů a optimální formy zdanění. Práce obsahuje též stručné porovnání s dalšími autory (D. Friedmanem a M. Rothbardem) a přehled teorií hospodářského cyklu v dílech zmíněných autorů.

Abstract:
The Thesis: Commodity prices are significantly more volatile than prices of industrial products. Production as well as non speculative demand of raw materials are subject to stochastic - sometimes even systematic - fluctuations, which get translated into pronounced price fluctuations by low short run price elasticities of demand and supply. Unstable prices as such provide an incentive to speculate; and - so the Friedman thesis - profitable speculation in itself has a stabilizing effect, since "speculation can be destabilizing in general only if speculators on average sell when the currency is low in price and buy when it is high". Temporal independence between speculative and non speculative activities is the only necessary condition Friedman considers. The counter argument: As can be shown however, even under the assumption of temporal independence speculation can have a destabilizing effect despite being profitable, if the non speculative excess demand is nonlinear. Moreover its precisely because of temporal interdependence on commodity markets, that speculative profits can even be achieved by destabilizing (stable) prices. The extreme volatility of commodity prices therefore may be partly caused by (profitable) speculation as well. (author's abstract)

Abstract:
The failure of politics is closely connected with deeply rooted misconceptions about the term politics. The author argues that a re-reading of Immanuel Kant's work "The Perpetual Peace" written 200 years ago offers a challenging possibility for a new conceptualization of politics, morality and peace. Morality is seen by Kant as an essential dimension of politics and the implementation and acknowledgement of laws by moral demands is defined as a precondition for a community of free citizens. In its public discourse politics does require law and morality. Deriving future rights from existing laws is one of the most favored argumentation used by politicians in the public. If the needs of law and justice are interpretated by politicians in their own interest, i.e. above all guarantees for the realization of political selfdetermination, then a real chance will exist for improving peace in the future.

In questa trattazione si analizzano i principi base da cui si deriva la teoria della cosmologia standard, basata sul modello di Friedmann-Robertson-Walker. Si comincia con l’esposizione del principio cosmologico, che stabilisce l’omogeneità e isotropia dell’Universo alle grandi scale e del postulato di Weyl. Da essi si ricava poi la metrica di Friedmann-Robertson-Walker, che permette di definire una struttura causale in un Universo in espansione. Dalla metrica e dalle equazioni di campo di Einstein si ottengono poi le equazioni di Friedmann, le quali a loro volta possono essere integrate, ottenendo alcuni modelli importanti. Infine, si approfondiscono i concetti di redshift e determinazione delle distanze, concetti molto utili per misurare i parametri che regolano l’evoluzione dell’Universo.

Abstract:
The work contained in this thesis covers the sulfonylation reaction between toluene and one of methanesulfonic anhydride and methanesulfonyl chloride. The desired products of these reactions are the three isomers (onho. meta and para) of methyl tolyl sulfone and the by-products are methanesulfonic acid, when methanesulfonic anhydride was used as the sulfonylating agent, and hydrogen chloride when methanesulfonyI chloride was the sulfonylating agent. When this reaction was carried out using the traditional Friedel-Crafts catalyst, AlCl) the thermodynamic isomer ratio of 60 % ortlw, 30 % para and 10 % meta was obtained. The aim of this work was to increase the selectivity of the sulfonylation reactions to the para isomer as this was required by the industrial partner (Zeneca) for use in further reactions. The two sulfonylation reactions were carried out over a range of catalysts including Alell , a silica-alumina, a montmorillonite clay and several zeolite catalysts. The main catalyst studied was zeolite Beta as in an empirical test of a range of catalsyts it had given the greatest percentage of para isomer, with a selectivity of 60 per cent obtained under certain conditions. Reaction times, temperatures and stoichiometry were amongst the variables investigated for their role in the reaction. It was found that the reaction had an initial induction period whichever solid-acid catalyst was used, and also that the reaction stopped by twenty four hours, presumably due to catalyst coking. Yields of methyl tolyl sulfone of up to fifty per cent with a selectivity of sixty per cent for the para isomer were obtained using zeolite Beta with some catalysts giving higher yields but correspondingly lower para selectivities. The catalysts were studied using a variety of analytical techniques. The analysis of the catalysts, particularly for a series of well-characterised zeolite Y’s, was compared to the catalysis results and several interesting trends were observed. The Sil Al ratio of catalysts did not have a consistent effect on the yield or selectivity, however the amount of extra› framework aluminium was shown to have a near-linear relationship to the yield. The disproportionate yield in the sulfonylation reaction for zeolite Beta was linked to the ability of zeolite Beta, much investigated recently, to have very mobile aluminiums either in the framework or dislodging from the framework. These act as Lewis acid sites.
