Abstract:
Purpose: This paper attempts to investigate the presence of Friday the 13th Effect in the Indian stock market. Design/methodology/approach: This paper tests the presence of the Friday the 13th Effect using different sets of hypotheses for 7 days, 15 days and normal versus Friday the 13th by using statistical methods. Findings: The findings of the study do not support the presence of Friday the 13th Effect for all cases. There are few months for certain specific years where the effect was seen. Research limitations/implications: The Friday the 13th effect has been examined for two major indices of the Indian market, i.e., the Bombay Stock Exchange Index SENSEX and the National Stock Exchange Nifty Fifty Index. However, there are other major and sectoral indices as well where in the effect may be checked. Practical implications: The study results indicate that Indian stock market shows phased anomaly. The effect of Friday the 13th is seen only in some cases during certain years only. Originality/value: Friday the 13th effect has been mostly checked for developed nations and again there has been less work done with respect to this particular market anomaly. The present research is an original work done for emerging market naming India.

Abstract:
The problem of efficiency of financial markets, especially the weekend effect, has always fascinated scientists. The issue is significant from the point of view of assessing the portfolio management effectiveness and behavioral finance. This paper tests the hypothesis of the unfortunate dates effect upon52 equity indices in relation to the following four approaches: close - close, overnight, open-open, open-close calculated for the sessions falling on the 13th and 4th day of the month, Friday the 13th, Tuesday the 13th. In the following part of the paper, the statistical equality of one-session average rates of return (close-close) for sessions falling on Friday 13th and sessions falling on other Friday sessions will be compared, as well as for sessions falling on Tuesday the 13th and sessions falling on other Tuesdays. The last part of the paper consists of the analysis of the correlation coefficients of Friday the 13th (close-close) rates of return calculated for the analyzed equity indices’ pairs.

Abstract:
This article begins with a new look at earlier work on this topic and continues with the presentation of a graphical technique for the determination of the months of a year for which the 13th is a Friday. It might be thought that the likelihood of the 13 th day of a month being a Friday is the same as that of the 13th being any other day, but this is not so. The full day/date repeat cycle is 400 years, this being the interval between century years which are leap years. The outcome of an extraordinary counting exercise some 50 years ago by a 13-year-old Eton schoolboy, S. R. Baxter [1, 2], was to show that, over this period, the 13th of a month will be a Friday at least once more than any other day. Of necessity, Baxter’s calculation was intricate and an independent confirmation was undertaken as a matter of interest. The 400-year period beginning 1 March 2014 was considered. The work is described in four stages.

Abstract:
PurposeIt is a well held belief that the full moon period and the date Friday 13th has an impact on the number of emergency call outs for emergency services. The purpose of this paper is to critically explore that belief. It also examines the versatility and richness of response records, and demonstrates the effectiveness of combining data sets.Design/methodology/approachThe work takes four varied data sets, from four rescue agencies along with the International Search and Rescue Database and compared the average number of calls on a full moon night, non-full moon and full moon period (the full moon night, the day before and day after). The average number of incidents on Friday 13th was also investigated. It uses a statistical approach to test the difference between “normal” dates and those dates traditionally believed to be busier.FindingsAlthough there were differences between Friday 13th, full moon nights, full moon periods and “normal” days, the differences were in general extremely small, not significantly significant and in most cases actually dropped during the supposedly unlucky period. The exception to this is a very small increase in the average number of responses during full moons for most data sets, although this was not statistically significant. This paper concludes that there is no evidence in the data for any impact of the full moon upon rescue teams’ activities.Research limitations/implicationsThis research deals with a small set of responses, from the UK only, and addresses an issue that is clearly not the most pressing. However, it does demonstrate evidenced-based management in practice, in that resources have incorrectly been assigned in the past to these dates.Practical implicationsThis work shows that preconceptions exist within the emergency services and that, without evidence-led management, resources can be allocated on hearsay. This shows that widely available software and techniques can be applied to organisational data and used to make management decisions more appropriate.Social implicationsRescue organisations are almost exclusively charity or public sector organisations, meaning that their budgets are sourced from donations or the tax-payer. Putting to bed misconceptions over resources for certain dates will ultimately benefit society in those terms.Originality/valueThere has been very little work on this phenomenon, although some works on A&E department admissions have taken place. This is the only work to date to combine data in this way for this purpose.

The issue of efficiency of financial markets has always fascinated scientists. It is significant from the point of view of assessing portfolio management effectiveness and behavioural finance. In the first part of this paper, the hypothesis of the unfortunate dates effect was tested upon 29 commodity prices in relation to the following four approaches: close‑close, overnight, open‑open, and open‑close. The rates of return were calculated for the sessions falling on the 13th and 4th day of the month, Friday the 13th and Tuesday the 13th. The study proved the occurrence of seasonal effects on the so‑called unlucky dates.

The problem of efficiency of financial markets, especially the weekend effect has always fascinated scholars and practitioners due to its relationship with the financial market efficiency. The issue is significant from the point of view of assessing the portfolio management effectiveness and behavioral finance. This paper tests the hypothesis of the unfortunate dates effect upon 7 equity indexes components (CAC40, DAX, DJIA, FTSE30, FTSEBIT, NIKKEI225 and SENSE), i.e. 419 companies. For all these equities the following rates of return were analyzed: Close-close, Overnight, Open-open, Open-close. As unfortunate days, the sessions falling on the following dates were selected: 13th and 4th day of the month, Friday the 13th and Tuesday the 13th. The research proved the presence of all kinds of the “unfortunate dates” effects on analyzed markets. The effects were registered for all analyzed rates of return. The most dominating “unfortunate dates effects” resulted to be Tuesday the 13th, proceeding the 4th day of the month effect. This is the first analysis of the presence of the “unfortunate dates effect”, in which other than Close-close returns were examined and fulfils the research gap.

Abstract:
The Harmonized System was adopted in the European Union ('EU') via Council Regulation (EEC) No 2658/87 of 23 July 1987, Appendix 1 and known as Combined Nomenclature. ('CN'). Classifying goods in the CN is often anything but straightforward. Despite general rules for interpretation, the classification of goods is frequently disputed. A substantial number of the judgments rendered by the Court of Justice of the European Union ('CJEU') relate to disputes about CN classification. The classification of parts and accessories has taken an unexpected turn on the basis of recent CJEU case law. As a result, many businesses have had to make changes in their databases for the import and export of goods.

Abstract:
This paper posits a socioeconomic explanation for the popularity of the slasher film genre. These films created a unique sub-genre in which teenage protagonists had to contend with unstoppable forces, in the form of manic killers, while every aspect of modernity and the middle-class lifestyle failed them. Cars and telephones die, the suburbs offer no sanctuary, and adults are absent or ineffectual. The slasher genre rose in popularity as the American economy spiraled into recession. By examining the big three franchises of Halloween, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street this paper analyzes the slasher films of the 1980s and their remakes in the late 2000s. It argues that slasher films symbolized a cathartic release for their mainly adolescent audiences at a time in their lives when impending adulthood and an unfavorable economic climate seemed to conspire against them.

Abstract:
The article deals with a little-known mo- nument of Seljuk woodcarving — a door from an ancient Friday mosque (Jami-i Kebir) in Kayseri (Turkey). The carved door, exhibited now in the Ankara Museum of Ethnography, has not yet been the subject of a comprehensive publication. Therefore, this artifact belongs to the group of Anatolian Seljuk woodcarvings, made in the 12th — early 13th centuries, that have a special significance. As rare monuments of Islamic art of the pre-Mongol Middle East, they stood at the origins of the blooming of Anatolian Seljuk art that would occur some decades later. The door was ordered and installed during the Jami-i Kebir mosque renovation, carried out in the second reign of the Seljuk Sultan Giyseddin I Kayhosrov (1205—1211), on the instructions of one of his emirs — Muzaffar al-din Mahmud son of Yagy-Basan, a descendant of the Danishmendid dynasty. The article considers the door’s ornamental decoration, organized as a classic “mihrab” composition, in a set of technical and stylistic aspects. For a comparative analysis, the author inspects a wide range of woodcarvings of the 11th—13th centuries from Anatolia and Iran. The close resemblance of used techniques and decoration, as well as motifs, ornamental themes and epigraphy makes it possible to suggest that the cabinet maker Ibrahim son of Abu-Bakr al-Rumi, who left his signature on the Minbar of the Alaaddin Mosque in Ankara Fortress, could be the author of the magnificent carved door from Kayseri’ Jami-i Kebir.

Abstract:
Egyptian days were one of the most enduring forms of calendrical prognostication in the ancient and medieval worlds. The Romans called these calendrical omens evil, dark, or ominous days (dies ægri, atri, mali, maledicti, ominosi, infortunati, and tenebrosi), and dies aegyptiaci at least by the fourth century C.E. There were twenty-four Egyptian days, two each month, recurring annually. In time, each day was paired with a particular hour viewed as dangerous, suspect, or inauspicious (hora suspecta, aegra, mala, timenda, or even unica). People who feared Egyptian days were bowing to the weight of tradition, much as someone today might have a superstitious fear of Friday the 13th. This article will focus on the role of cultural memory in providing a rationale for a belief in Egyptian days, and on mnemonic aids that were used to remember where they would fall during the calendar year. Special attention will be devoted to an obscure set of mnemonic verses with the incipit Armis gunfe, which the astronomer Johannes de Sacrobosco (Sacro Busto) (ca. 1195–ca. 1256?) disseminated in Paris around 1235. We will consider how these verses circulated in writing and were applied in practice.

Abstract:
Kakawin (manuscript), composed by Rakawi Made Degung from Sibetan Karangasem, received a positive response among lovers of classical Balinese literature, because it is full of Shiva-Buddhist philosophy which until now still lives side by side and harmoniously in Bali. This well-packaged, aesthetically pleasing Kakawin has an important position among the existing kakawin, because the content and unique presentation factor is the spirit of the times, namely the Shiva-Buddhist discourse that is typical of the Balinese model. This Kakawin was completed on Friday Paing Sinta, the 13th anniversary of the Saka year 1915 (1993 AD). The information implied in this kakawin epilogue is truly something unique that is rarely or never found in other kakawin. His Kakawin compositions, the writing of the number of years to the name of the pangawi (author) and its origin, are packaged in a unique way and explained in one last stanza of this kakawin. In addition to starting with the Manggala who worships the Goddess of Beauty (Saraswati) as the sacred God Brahma spouse, the Goddess of Knowledge, and the Soul of the script, at the end of his work, Pangawi begs before Him so that the world will be saved as well as its leader.

Abstract:
Abstract The following paper discusses how the experience and perception of contingency and strategies to cope with it are evident in the architecture of the Muslim ruling class during the early Delhi Sultanate (1190–1320). The discussed building is the most important Friday Mosque in this context, a quasi-visualized symbol of the thematic concept of rulership for the new Muslim political elite. This ruling class established itself in Northern India in the late 12th century within a multi-ethnic, multi-religious and socially heterogeneous society, in which extremely different forms of communication, social hierarchies, worldviews, religious concepts, social norms and perceptions of historical images and experiences met. From the 13th century onwards, the countless immigrants and refugees from Persian-speaking areas had a remarkable influence on the local culture which was already multifaceted due to the various indigenous Northern Indian conceptions of life, faith and perception. Examining the architecture of the mosque as well as its decoration and systems of inscriptions, it will be shown how these almost text-like visual systems where adapted and used by different rulers as part of their diverging strategies of legitimization of their rule and how they created visualized reference systems to promote a coherent, specific historical narrative and a visual experience and language of a meaningful collective past to which all social and religious groups in Northern India could relate.

Abstract:
This paper was a presentation made at the launching of the 60th Anniversary Celebration and the Annual Graduation Ceremony of Peki College of Education, on Friday, 13th June 2014. The paper examined the history of the development of initial teacher training institutions in Ghana since 1835 when the first (i.e. Presbyterian Training College [PTC]) was established by the Basel Mission at Akropong in the Eastern Region. It explains that currently there are 38 public and 3 private colleges of education in the country producing teachers for basic schools. It argues that even though the 41 colleges of education have been elevated to tertiary status to offer programmes leading to diploma in basic education, they are still being run like the old missionary teacher training schools. These and several other factors had led to concerns about the quality of the products of the colleges in terms of the generic and subject-specific competences as well as the capacities of the institutions to meet the increasing demand for basic school teachers. It is therefore suggested that the boarding system in the Colleges of Education be scrapped, and instead, few (about 10) of the colleges selected for development and upgrading into Teacher Education Universities. It is further suggested that special incentives are introduced to attract the top candidates to the colleges of education and also the institutions should review their programmes and study modules to ensure pre-service teachers develop practical skills in teaching the core competencies in basic education.
