Abstract:
The aim of this study was to describe the use of translation techniques and the impact of the use of translation techniques on the accuracy and acceptability of medical terms in book of the Foundation Module: the midwife in the community. The method used in this research was a mixed method design, combining quantitative and qualitative approaches as it to discuss the quantification of the frequency of translation techniques used by the translator to translate medical terms and the impact of translation techniques applied on the accuracy and acceptability of the medical term translations. The source of data in this study is a book entitled Foundation Module: the midwife in the community and its Indonesian translation and 6 informants as well as a rater to assess the quality of medical terms translation. The results of this study showed that translation of medical terms of total 334 data dominated by naturalized borrowing 32.63%, calque 16.77% and description technique 8.38%. Meanwhile, quality assessment of the accuracy level of the translation showed a highly accurate 80.24% and assessment of acceptability 86.53%. Mostly the techniques used in translating medical terms give a positive influence for the accuracy and acceptability level of translation because the techniques used delivery the same information from the source language into the target language which is accepted linguistically.

Abstract:
The present study aims to analyse wordplay translation on the basis of the three aspects mentioned in the title—wordplay typology, translation techniques and relevant factors. The theoretical framework is eclectic but draws particularly on Delabastita (1996, 1997) and Lladó (2002). Empirical analysis is based on three English source texts and six Catalan translations, and focuses on two main issues: the frequency distribution of pairs of ST + TT segments across translation techniques, and the possible correlation(s) between translation techniques and factors influencing decision-making. It is observed that translators tend to use techniques implying a negative punning balance, i.e. resulting in some degree of loss of punning activity. Moreover, some factors identified in the literature are seen to correlate with the use of particular translation techniques. Finally, in the last section an attempt is made to go beyond description and explanation and to assess wordplay translation techniques in terms of their suitability as translation solutions.

Abstract Translation is a process of transfering source text into the target text viewed from the equivalent of meaning, with equvalencies, the message in the translation text will be the same as the target text. Hence, translating is not just the process of tranfering text from the source language into the target language. However, instead of ideas, translation enters compilation, he processes a translation product. The use of appropriate translation techniques also affects the quality of the translation results. This study aims to describe the ideology of translation in Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this study are qualitative based on types of words, phrases and sentences containing translation techniques and ideology taken from the translated novel of Indonesian Version of Agatha Christie’s Endless Night Novel. Based on the analysis of translation techniques and the ideology of translation used in the text, the ideology used in the translation text is foreignization. Based on the analysis, the results of the study show that of the 18 translation techniques, 12 translation techniques were found consisting of; Literal translation (53%), Amplification (11%), Variation (8%), Particularization (6%), Borrowing (6%), Transposition (5%), Reduction (4%), Calque (2%), Compensation (2%). Meanwhile Description, Linguistic Compression, and Established Equivalent occur only in (1%). The result of the study shows that the most dominant technique used in Indonesian version of Agatha Christie’s endless night novel is Literal translation with 82 occurrences frequency or 53%.

Abstract:
This research focuses on translation strategies and techniques for rendering slang in Quentin Tarantino’s films “Pulp Fiction” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. The material of the research was the original scripts for the films and their translations into Ukrainian. Defining translation strategies when transferring English slang into Ukrainian involved: frequency analysis of the slang words; semantic decomposition of the slang words to establish their meanings; and comparison of the words to reveal consistent patterns of translating English slang into Ukrainian. Slang words fucking, fuck, shit, goddamn, motherfucker make up 3.6% of the total wordcount in “Pulp Fiction” and 1.33% in “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”. They mainly function as exclamations, nominations for something inferior, as euphony, or to denote a despicable adversary. Literal translation has been registered in 31.73% in “Pulp Fiction” and 30.98% in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, explicitation (6.07% and 26.03%,) substitution (39.75% and 48.8%). Slang words were neutralised in 15.45% and 16.8%, omitted in 21.34% and 21.72%. The study hypothesises that the techniques involved show a correlation between the semantic transparency of the slang word and the strategy chosen.

This study was aimed to analyze translation technique on manual instruction of electronic devices at PT. Philips. The objectives of this study are the first to find out the most dominant of the translation techniques used in translation techniques of manual instruction book ‘Philips’ electronic iron. The second is to identify the translation techniques used in in translation techniques of manual instruction book ‘Philips’ electronic iron in case English to Indonesian language. This study applied descriptive qualitative approach in analyzing of the data obtained. The data based on the text of the instruction manual on the Philip electronic devices. The findings of this study showed that there are 120 data consist of 8 words, 55 phrases and 57 sentences on the manual instruction of Philips electronic iron especially translation in English to Bahasa Indonesia. The techniques Calque was mostly applied in translation with 25 frequencies (18.33%), then the second position is Borrowing with 22 frequencies (18.33%), then third is Establish Equivalent with 16 frequencies (13.33%), the fourth is Particularization with 13 frequencies (10.83%), the next is Literal with 10 frequencies (8.33%), the next is Adaptation with 9 frequencies (7.50%), then the next is Discursive Creation with 9 frequencies (7.50%), Amplification with 7 frequencies (5.83%), Transposition with 4 frequencies (3.33%), Generalization with 4 frequencies (3.33%) and the last is Reduction with 1 frequency (0.83%).. This study could be concluded that the translator tended to translate foreign words or phrases more lexically and structurally rather than other techniques

The study deals with the issue of lexical and grammatical transformations used by translators in the process of translating the texts of political news from NATO`s official website. In this article, the definition of the term “translator’s transformations” based on the analysis of different scholars’ points of view on this matter was suggested. Various classifications of translation transformations were mentioned. The paper highlights the reasons for using lexical and grammatical transformations in translation, and why these transformations are helpful for translators. The analysis of the use of the features and patterns of translation techniques to achieve the adequacy of translation was performed. In the article transformations in the translation of the texts of political news (from the NATO official website) were examined. The research is focused on the main characteristic features and peculiarities of using grammatical and lexical transformations in the process of translating political texts. The research object is transformations in translation of the texts of political news (from the NATO official website). The research subject is the features and principles of using grammatical and lexical transformations in the process of translating political texts. The results of the research indicate the most characteristic lexical and grammatical transformation in the translation of political news and the frequency of their use.

Abstract:
Audiovisual translation (AVT) from English into other languages is gaining popularity both in the entertainment and professional realms. Besides language difficulties, an interpreter has to face cultural challenges and a lack of professional knowledge of a particular subject field. This paper examines medical AVT from English to Kazakh. Translation issues in this field have rarely been the focus of linguistic studies, with hardly any studies of the matter with Kazakh as a target language. During the Covid-19 pandemic, it is crucial to be aware of cutting-edge technology and treatment techniques that are available in English. The TEDMED oral report “The Wireless Future of Medicine” made by Eric Topol, a distinguished cardiologist and geneticist, and its voice-over translation provided by the Kazakhstan national bureau of translations were chosen as the material for this pilot study. Continuous sampling was used to select 95 terms and term phrases (T-units) in the source text that were further distributed into eight subject field groups. A standard classification was used to identify the translation technique in each case in the target text. As a result, frequency models were built for both subject groups and translation techniques. Groups related to medical procedures, medical devices, anatomy and physiology were the most frequent. There was a clear correlation between the subject field and dominant translation technique: equivalence prevailed in the fields connected with Kazakh medicine from nomadic times, while in other fields, there was an increase of techniques other than the equivalence.

Mantra Jamuan Laut is spells or words used by a sea-handler in the process of Ritual Ceremony among Malay society in Kabupaten Serdang Bedagai, North Sumatra - Indonesia. This study deals with translation technique, ideologies and quality of the translated text of sea repast incantation from Malay language into English. There was 82 clauses of translated text as the data. The source of data is the utterances of a sea-handler and FGD. Descriptive qualitative was applied by using Molina and Albir’s theory to find out the translation techniques meanwhile the theory of Nababan & Machali used to figure out the quality of the translation. Considering the fact that the data which consists of four incantations are translated by five translators, then the results of their translation vary. From the analysis, it was found that there were 11 techniques of 18 applied with literal as the most dominant technique. Thereby the translators embraced foreignization ideology that mainly focuses on the source text. The utilization of foreignization ideology and the use of source language-oriented translation techniques showed that intercultural and thematic knowledge of the translators are insufficient. Since the frequency of literal technique was less than 25%, the quality of translated-text was regarded as ‘fair’.

This article aims to analyze vocabulary mastery in translating lexical to determine students' vocabulary mastery in translating books. Arabic has a wealth of vocabulary so that the vocabulary is often different but the meaning is the same in Indonesian. In translating a book, a translator must master several elements related to Arabic translation. Errors in translating will have fatal consequences for the content of the text and others who understand it. This is the cause of the importance of mastering vocabulary in translating lexical books. The boarding house has its own unique method of learning. Translating lexical is one of its own characteristics in the dormitory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, the object of research is the students of the Ula and Ulya levels which are the second and third levels of the 4 levels of learning at this Islamic boarding school. while the data collection techniques by observation, questionnaires and interviews. The results of the study showed that the mastery of vocabulary in translating lexical was assisted by the students' notes during the learning process. Students write translations of meaning into their respective books. So students can reopen when they forget. Memorization of vocabulary will make it easier in the future and can also increase vocabulary, but the frequency of finding the vocabulary when learning a student will indirectly memorize it by itself

Abstract:
The ever growing demand for higher data rates and the heavy usage of wireless communication devices have created frequency congestion on certain bands of the radio spectrum. The push has been towards new standards that can quench this thirst for data capacity and more space on the spectrum. This has led to added complexity and cost for radio platforms. In particular, the increase in the number of antennas, switch banks and pre-select filters have made it challenging to implement these platforms cost-effectively. Therefore, concepts such as software-defined radio(SDR) and cognitive radio(CR) have been proposed to tackle this problem. These concepts, allow the use of a single wideband receiver which can handle multiple radio standards spread across the entire spectrum of interest. The introduction of a common flexible hardware platform eliminates the use of multiple off-chip RF pre-filters and thus lowers cost, reduces complexity and form factor. While attractive, these future radio receivers pose a number of unique challenges to the designer. This thesis focuses on frequency translation (FT) techniques and addresses two key SDR/CR challenges: the robustness to out-of-band interference (OBI) or block-ers and the compatibility with CMOS scaling and system-on-chip (SoC) integration. The thesis studies the principles and the performance limitations of existing FT tech-niques and proposes new circuit-and-system techniques to improve the performance of wideband receivers suitable for SDR and CR applications. First, the performance of the frequency translational resistive feedback receiver frontend is studied and analyzed. Instead of using a conventional LNA, the job of the LNA is shared along the receiver chain through the utilization of frequency translation techniques. This approach significantly relaxes the trade-off between noise, out-of-band linearity and wideband operation. Though frequency translation is at the core of the receiver functionality, it is accomplished using time-varying, strongly nonlinear passive mixer circuits. So the operation and noise performance cannot be understood using standard LTI circuit analysis techniques. To this end, an in-depth LTV analysis is presented which accurately captures the gain, input matching and the noise performance of the receiver. Next, a wideband blocker tolerant receiver with an RF frequency range of 0.1 GHz to 2.2 GHz is proposed. By using frequency-translational resistive shunt-feedback, the receiver achieves frequency selective input match across its entire range of operation. Four techniques for improving blocker tolerance of the receiver have been utilized: 1) voltage amplification only after baseband filtering 2) blocker rejection at the antenna interface using an N-path filter 3) blocker current cancellation in the baseband 4) frequency translational noise cancellation which uses an auxiliary path to cancel the noise of the main path. By introducing an auxiliary path, the value of the RF transconductor in the main path is halved which in turn relaxes the requirements of the main path and further improves the overall linearity of the receiver while degradation in the noise figure is prevented due to noise-cancellation. As a proof of concept, a receiver prototype is fabricated in a 130 nm CMOS process. The measurement results demonstrate that the receiver achieves +2dBm in-band IIP3 and +27dBm out-of-band IIP3. The measured noise figure varies from 2.6 dB at low frequencies to 3.2 dB at 2.2 GHz. The receiver can tolerate a +2.5 dBm blocker beyond a 40 MHz offset while achieving a blocker noise figure of 4.6 dB for a 0-dBm blocker at 40 MHz offset. Finally, architecture and circuit techniques are proposed to improve the receiver’s resilience to strong harmonic blockers. Designed in a 40nm standard CMOS process, the receiver can tolerate up to -1 dBm harmonic blockers. On the other hand, it achieves a 1-dB standard blocker compression point of +3 dBm and OB-IIP3 of +24 dBm at a 40 MHz offset from the LO frequency.

Abstract:
When students – even advanced students – produce low quality translations in my translation classes at the Technische Hochschule in Cologne, it is often due to a diminished awareness of what a translator’s job consists of. Due to an interest in expediency and often influenced by the idea that translation boils down to code switching, students frequently severely truncate any efforts to read and comprehend the source text; instead they often try to substitute words in the source language with those from the target language without reaching an adequate understanding of the source text. The resulting translations almost always bear painful witness to the shortcomings of these “neophyte tactics.” Teaching a hermeneutical approach to translation is one effective way to counter such neophyte tactics. Drawing upon especially Heidegger and Gadamer, I will delineate briefly my own notion of “understanding” with particular regard for use by the translator. Based upon this notion of understanding, an approach to translation will then be sketched out. This is a work in progress, and the approach has not yet rendered a clearly defined technique for translation. However, by outlining some elements of cognition that seem to be essential to the process of understanding, it does demarcate some core issues that should be addressed when devising any pragmatics of translation that is hermeneutical in nature.

Currently, organizations rely on professional translators or machines to translate their content. The challenge is that professional translations is costly and too slow while machine translations do not produce high quality or accurate translations even though they may be faster and less expensive. Crowdsourcing has emerged as a technique with many applications. The purpose of this research is to test whether crowdsourcing can produce equivalent or better quality translations than professional or machine translators. A crowdsourcing study was undertaken and the results indicate that the quality of crowdsourced translations was equivalent to professional translations and far better than machine translations. The research and managerial implications are discussed.

Although machine translation and translation memories are frequently used in business, they are inadequate to translate a text from a culture to another one. When faced with philosophy, literature or ancient texts, professional translators have to cope with the fact that the most important things to ‘translate’ are often in the style, in details, or even unwritten. We advocate for changing the user interfaces and use patterns of a few computer-assisted translation techniques so that they could fit the interpretative tradition of cultural sciences. In particular, we will focus on what could foster intertextuality and enable the confrontation of different points of view on the same opus (several translators in several languages). Provided as a participative Web platform, our software is designed as a collaboration and debate place for scholars around the world working on the same opus, author, time or genre. At the end of the chapter, this design is confronted with the observation of a face-to-face working session.

Although colonoscopy is the most frequently performed endoscopic procedure, the lack of standardized reporting is impeding clinical and translational research. Inadequacies in data extraction from the raw, unstructured text in electronic health records (EHR) pose an additional challenge to procedure quality metric reporting, as vital details related to the procedure are stored in disparate documents. Currently, there is no EHR workflow that links these documents to the specific colonoscopy procedure, making the process of data extraction error prone. We hypothesize that extracting comprehensive colonoscopy quality metrics from consolidated procedure documents using computational linguistic techniques, and integrating it with discrete EHR data can improve quality of screening and cancer detection rate. As a first step, we developed an algorithm that links colonoscopy, pathology and imaging documents by analyzing the chronology of various orders placed relative to the colonoscopy procedure. The algorithm was installed and validated at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS). The proposed algorithm in conjunction with Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques can overcome current limitations of manual data abstraction.

Children with cancer and their families experience significant emotional distress throughout the cancer trajectory. Evidence-based psychosocial interventions can alleviate suffering and promote adaptation and positive coping strategies. This chapter reviews interventions frequently used within pediatric oncology settings, including evidence-based approaches and those with limited empirical data to date. Interventions utilized at initial diagnosis, during active treatment, throughout survivorship, and at end of life and bereavement are presented. Strategies such as psychoeducation, procedural support for children, mind-body interventions, play and expressive techniques, cognitive-behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, adherence interventions, support groups, communication, and advanced care planning tools are described along with available efficacy information. Data is also presented to describe the interventions most commonly used by pediatric psychosocial providers when caring for children with cancer and their families. The development of evidence-based standards of psychosocial care highlight the significant progress made toward supporting children with cancer and their families. Gaps in interventions are addressed, particularly on developmental and culturally sensitive approaches, school re-entry support, pediatric to adult care transitions, individual bereavement interventions, and intervention format/delivery. The field of pediatric psycho-oncology would benefit from ongoing translation of science into practice and increased access to evidence-based interventions.

Abstract:
Wound healing is a highly complex process mediated by microscopic cellular interactions. An improved understanding of the physiology of wound healing has laid the groundwork for translational research to create biologic wound care technologies that have significantly impacted patient care. Biologic wound technologies have broad applications and have had a significant impact on the reconstructive ladder, as the reader will see throughout this chapter. Despite their frequent use, many surgeons are unfamiliar with the plethora of products on the market, as well as each product’s relative advantages and disadvantages. This chapter will go over oncologic reconstruction of the nose, scalp, lip, cheek, and extremities after wide local excision of melanomas in these areas, which is a significant challenge for plastic surgeons. Traditional methods for reconstructing these defects include primary closure techniques, skin grafts, local flaps, pedicled flaps, and free tissue transfer; however, the increased risk of metastasis associated with melanoma makes it difficult to use biologic wound healing agents like Integra and Cytal as alternative reconstructive options without causing additional donor site morbidity. In this chapter, we examine the use of biological agents in soft tissue reconstruction, including the surgical approaches, complications, and limitations of various reconstructive methods.

Abstract:
This paper proposes a trajectory planning technique for planar three-degree-of-freedom cable-suspended parallel robots. Based on the kinematic and dynamic modelling of the architecture, force constraints that can guarantee that cables remain under tension are obtained. Periodic parametric trajectories that extend beyond the static workspace are designed. The trajectories involve combined translations and rotations. Substituting the trajectories into the force constraints, interval arithmetics is used to search for global conditions on the trajectory parameters which ensure that the trajectories are feasible. Special frequencies related to combined rotational and translational motions are exposed which can be used to better exploit cable-suspended robots. Moreover, it is observed that the special frequencies related to the translation are akin to the natural frequency of pendulum-like systems. The proposed trajectory planning approach can be used to plan combined rotational and translational dynamic trajectories that can extend beyond the static workspace of the mechanism, thereby opening novel applications and possibilities for cable-suspended robots.

There are many systems that monitor and analyze machinery conditions, but there is a lack on monitoring techniques that are able to identify early faults. This is critical since faulty roller bearings cause most of the problems in rotating machinery. Two major difficulties limit the early prediction of roller bearing failures: The acquisition of high frequency data, and the low energy levels emitted by surfaces cracks on rollers or tracks. Early fault detection requires adequate instrumentation and signal analysis. Therefore, it is important to identify its nonlinear response, and to be able to detect low energy signals in order to detect early faults. The vibration characteristics of the bearing depend on the rotational speed, clearance, radial load, rolling element stiffness, and the surface waviness. Additionally, they generate transient vibrations due to stiffness nonlinearities and structural defects. We present in this work a technique for the detection of early faults. The technique is based on the derivation of the rolling bearing nonlinear stiffness as a function of the roller translation and roller deformation. For the deformation, we determine the relative displacement of the roller tracks and we apply Hertz’s contact stress function. With this formulation we identify the nonlinear response to the external excitation forces. Then, the results are analyzed with a time-frequency map and the phase diagram; the two analyses are compared in order to determine the best signal procedure to identify early failures.

Power consumption, earlier a design constraint only in embedded systems, has become the major driver for architectural optimizations in all domains, from the cloud to the edge. Application-specific accelerators provide a low-power processing solution by efficiently matching the hardware to the application; however, since in many domains the hardware must execute efficiently a broad range of fast-evolving applications, unpredictable at design time and each with distinct resource requirements, alternatives approaches are required. Besides that, the same hardware must also adapt the computational power at run time to the system status and workload sizes. To address these issues, this thesis presents a general-purpose reconfigurable accelerator that can be coupled to a heterogeneous set of cores and supports Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS), synergistically combining the techniques for a better match between different applications and hardware when compared to current designs. The resulting architecture, MuTARe, provides a coarse-grained regular and reconfigurable structure which is suitable for automatic acceleration of deployed code through dynamic binary translation. In extension to that, the structure of MuTARe is further leveraged to apply two emerging computing paradigms that can boost the power-efficiency: Near-Threshold Voltage (NTV) computing (while still supporting transparent acceleration) and Approximate Computing (AxC). Compared to a traditional heterogeneous system with DVFS support, the base MuTARe architecture can automatically improve the execution time by up to 1:3×, or adapt to the same task deadline with 1:6× smaller energy consumption, or adapt to the same low energy budget with 2:3× better performance. In NTV mode, MuTARe can transparently save further 30% energy in memory-intensive workloads by operating the combinatorial datapath at half the memory frequency. In AxC mode, MuTARe can further improve power savings by up to 50% by leveraging approximate functional units for arithmetic computations.

The technique of optical frequency translation by a rotating electric field in a trigonal electrooptic crystal has been adapted to a buried channel waveguide structure. To implement the field rotation under the constraints of a planar geometry, an electrode configuration was adopted consisting of three coplanar, collinear metal strips driven in phase quadrature, with the lightguide under the central strip. Elimination of a cyclic modulation of field amplitude, characterizing the results of a previous study1 by the author, was achieved by appropriately widening the outer electrodes relative to the central one and by choosing a suitable channel depth. Spurious sidebands previously generated by an effective counterrotating field component are thus removed. It is shown that with a residual modal birefringence equivalent to λ/20 differential phase retardation, the device here described can achieve 98% translation into the single first-order upper sideband with <0.5% combined spurious carrier and second-order upper sideband.

Prediction of machine dynamics at the design stage is a challenge due to lack of adequate methods for identifying and handling the nonlinearities in the machine joints, which appear as the nonlinear restoring force function of relative displacement and relative velocity across the joint. This paper discusses identification of such a nonlinear restoring force function for an industrial translational guide for use with the Nonlinear Receptance Coupling Approach (NLRCA) for evaluating machine dynamic characteristics. Translational guides are among the most commonly used joints in machine tools. Both a parametric and nonparametric technique has been employed to identify the nonlinearities. A novel parametric model based on Hertzian contact mechanics has been derived for the translational guide. This model includes the effect of joint geometry, material properties and preload. A nonparametric method based on two-dimensional Chebyshev polynomials is also used. The models derived from the two techniques, i.e., parametric and nonparametric, are fitted to the experimental data derived from static and dynamic tests to get the restoring force as a function of relative displacement and relative velocity across the joint. The resulting joint model exhibits a weakly nonlinear stiffness term and a viscous damping term. The results from both techniques are compared in the frequency domain. The advantages and disadvantages of parametric and nonparametric techniques are also discussed. The design of experiments for evaluating the nonlinearities in such industrial machine tool joints is a challenge, requiring careful alignment and calibration, because they are typically very stiff. This constrains the dynamic experiments to be carried out at high frequencies (e.g. 2000-7000Hz) where the experimental readings are very sensitive to errors in geometry and calibration.

A method was developed for the measurement of slug frequency, slug velocity and slug length of two-phase gas/liquid flow under slug conditions in 2-inch horizontal pipe. The method consists of two pairs of ultrasonic transducers with 1MHz frequency. Non-invasive detection for slugs was achieved over a range of (0.1–1 ms−1) superficial liquid velocity and (0.1–3 ms−1) superficial gas velocity. The slug translational velocity was measured using a cross correlation technique for the modulated ultrasonic signals received. The slug length was measured after measuring the slug time t(slug) and slug translational velocity. The slug parameters measured were extensively compared with conductivity probes measurements and experimental correlations.
