Abstract Whereas Poe’s influence on many national literatures has been the subject of serious scholarly investigation, no attention has been paid to the nineteenth-century Dutch-language imitations, adaptations, and translations of his tales in the Netherlands and Flanders. Based on unexplored evidence in contemporary journals and newspapers, this contribution fills this gap by examining the earliest of such translations, published in the first seventeen years after the author’s death. The appendix provides the first-ever catalog of recoverable translations and adaptations of Poe’s tales until 1900. While even before 1860 Poe’s name featured in literary surveys, reference works, and newspaper items, Dutch-language versions of his tales throughout the nineteenth century appeared only sporadically. For various sociolinguistic, political, and educational reasons, the versions published in the Netherlands antedated and outnumbered those produced in Flanders. Usually offered to the reading public in condensed form, the earliest translations and adaptations were derived from both intermediate source texts—French, German, and British—and from original Poe editions. Plans for the publication of selections of Poe’s prose works in the 1850s and 1860s foundered; not until the late nineteenth century were Dutch-language audiences given access to more than a sprinkling of Poe’s tales.

Resum: La novel·la anònima Pierres de Provença ens arriba des d’un original francès escrit a mitjan segle XV passant per algunes traduccions castellanes i catalanes que van fer-se des de principis del segle XVI. Malgrat la poca atenció que li ha dedicat la crítica literària en general, les aventures del cavaller Pierres i la gentil Magalona han comptat amb lectors de forma continuada fins al segle XIX. Aquest relat cavalleresc és un dels pocs títols que conformen el catàleg de la prosa impresa en català en l’època moderna, i és, per tant, força convenient fer una adequada catalogació de les edicions per tal de confegir un cens acurat que permeta estudiar l’obra i bastir-ne una edició crítica. Hem pogut establir un llistat d’onze edicions verificades pels bibliògrafs, de les quals només se’n conserven nou. La cronologia de les edicions és, a hores d’ara, aproximada, exceptuant-ne les que fan constar la data d’impressió a la portada: 1650, 1683 i 1908. Paraules clau: Pierres de Provença, edicions, català, segles XVII-XVIII Abstract: The anonymous novel Pierres de Provença has come to us from a French original written in the mid-fifteenth century through some of the Spanish and Catalan translations carried out since the beginning of the sixteenth century. Despite the little attention that it has received from most historians of literature, the adventures of the knight Pierres and the beautiful Magalona have had readers uninterruptedly up to the nineteenth century. This short chivalric story is one of the few works that make up the catalog of the Catalan prose of the modern period, and therefore it is quite convenient to make a thorough cataloguing of the editions made in order to establish an accurate census that allows to study the work and build up a critical edition. We have been able to establish a list of eleven editions verified by the bibliographers, of which only nine have been preserved. The chronology of most of the editions is, by now, just approximate, except those that have a specified date print on the cover: 1650, 1683 and 1908. Abstract:
As part of its repressive programme, Franco’s regime significantly limited the publication of literature in Catalan, a language that was pejoratively reduced to the category of dialect. In that context, the decision of writing and editing books in Catalan during the military dictatorship (1939‐75) was itself an act of resistance. This article studies a series of testimonial narratives that were published in the late 1960s and early 1970s in Spain about French concentration camps, including Crist de 200.000 braços. Refugiats catalans als camps de concentració francesos (1968), by Agustí Bartra; El desgavell (1969), by Ferran Planes; and Cartes des dels camps de concentració (1972), by Pere Vives i Clavé. Testimonial narratives about French concentration camps already circulated in the countries where Spanish intellectuals were exiled. However, writers such as Bartra, Planes, Vives i Clavé (survivors of Argelès-sur-Mer, Saint-Cyprien and other French concentration camps) and some Catalan editors committed to the Republican cause were interested in telling their traumatic experiences to Spanish and Catalan readers living in Spain. Therefore, they undertook the task of editing these works although in many cases they were strongly censored. Taking this into account, the purpose of this article is to analyse some aspects of these editions in order to consider how their testimonial narratives remain in constant tension between two forces: Republican writers’ intention to show their own version of recent history and the Spanish government’s imposition of its own institutional and conservative official discourse.

Abstract:
The article stresses mainly the comparison of the position of the clitic object pronouns with respect to finite verbs in two languages from the (Eastern) Pyrenees, Catalan and Occitan. The position of the weak pronoun in relation to the finite verb in Old Occitan and Old Catalan shows interesting differences to the modern varieties of these languages and to Old French. Both languages allow, like contemporary European Portuguese, the positioning of the object pronoun directly after the finite verb in unmarked main sentences. Unlike in Old French this applies irrespective of verb-first-constructions with the verb in the absolute front position (socalled Tobler-Mussafia Law), where in all medieval Romance languages a postposition occurs.

Abstract:
Arguing that the concept of littérature-monde conceals unequal relations between literary cultures, this article examines the socio-economic contexts of literary translation from and into Breton from the fifteenth to the twenty-first century. The value of translation across the corpus of 1025 texts lies primarily in creating intercultural relationships and promoting cultural diversity. Translation into Breton represents a vital defence of a language with dwindling speaker numbers: in the late 1970s it increases dramatically, with littérature de jeunesse spearheading a change in state policy allowing regional languages to be taught in schools. Yet translation can also reinforce an existing power imbalance, highlighting the central role played by French in the linguistic and literary construction of Breton society. Poetry, songs and contes translated from Breton often perpetuate stereotypes of a bardic, oral culture, while nationalist writers reject self-translation into French as capitulation before the dominant culture. Since the 1980s, many have chosen to bypass French by translating into languages such as Welsh, Scottish, Irish or Catalan, creating a network of minority literatures. Since the market for Breton translation is so small, however, such texts serve as valuable identity markers, a symbolic, affective force articulating a quest for socio-political legitimacy via literature.

Abstract:
The motive of the «disinherited widow» has found until now little consideration in literature. Therefore it is interesting to study two novels published within a few decades of each other and which address this problem: Middlemarch (1871/1872), one of the well-known novels by George Eliot, and Pilar Prim (1906) by Narcís Oller. Although it has not been proven, it seems plausible that Oller knew the English novel, because he read a lot of contemporary literature and, besides this, maintained close contact with French literary circles, where the French translations of Eliot’s novels were familiar. This article studies the socio-cultural differences, analogies and consequences of the forced renunciation of the deceased husband’s fortune of two wealthy widows, because a codicile in testament hinders a second marriage. The main problem is not this renunciation, but that the sec ond husband is poor, and so the widow must choose love, poverty and social isolation or wealth, loneliness and social appreciation. It has often been noted that Violant de Bar, wife of Joan I and Queen of Aragon 1387-96, played an important role in the diffusion of humanistic or pre-humanistic culture in the Crown of Aragon. Indeed, Violant encouraged the spread of French customs throughout the kingdom, particularly the new literary currents that contributed to the study of classical authors, and in so doing appears to have caused a true cultural revolution. Her influence continued even after the death of King Joan in 1396. This essay attempts to determine the real cultural impact of Violant de Bar’s presence in the Crown of Aragon by answering the following questions: Did Catalan literary culture undergo a renewal in the 14th century brought about by Violant? Did Catalan humanism originate from a French rather than an Italian model? Was Violant’s legacy truly revolutionary, and what changes did it occasion in the literature produced in the peninsula between the late 14th and mid-15th centuries?

The large n behavior of the hypergeometric polynomial [Formula: see text] is considered by using integral representations of this polynomial. This 3F2 polynomial is associated with the Catalan–Larcombe–French sequence. Several other representations are mentioned, with references to the literature, and another asymptotic method is described by using a generating function of the sequence. The results are similar to those obtained by Clark (2004) who used a binomial sum for obtaining an asymptotic expansion.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the study of a particular aspect of the dialogue between Ivan Turgenev and the literature of the United States of America. The piece of research focuses on the Russian writer’s book collection, namely that part of it, which contains the works of American authors in English and French. According to the existing catalogs and inventories all the surviving copies of Turgenev’s library have been identified with maximum details. As a result, the “American Foundation” today consists of four representatives of romanticism: J. Cooper, W. Irving, N. Hawthorne and E. Poe. All discovered books of American literature are carefully described. The object of the description is the publication history of the book, the features of its external design and, which is especially important, the traces left by the reader on the pages, i. e. nail marks and underlines and notes made by a pencil. Thus, the earliest by the date of publication in Turgenev’s library is the novel by J. Cooper “The Pioneers”, published in French as part of the fourth volume of the massive series of Cooper’s works. Several nail marks were left on the pages of the novel, which certainly belong to Turgenev’s reading style. In addition, in the process of studying Turgenev’s library, it was possible to establish that the collection of fantastic fiction stories by E. Poe, translated by S. Baudelaire, which stands farthest in the chronology of publication, did not really belong to a Russian writer and could not be the subject of his reading. As a result, the works of American authors preserved in Turgenev’s library make it possible to reproduce a picture of the direct acquaintance of the Russian writer with the literature of the United States, and the marks and notes on particular books open up the prospect of setting and solving new problems (“I. Turgenev and N. Hawthorne”, “I. Turgenev and J. Cooper”) in the aspects of both the reader’s acquaintance and subsequent creative reflection.

AbstractThe traditional philological literature on Sardinian claims that Sardinian has a “partitive object” construction, arguing that it is either inherited from Latin or due to Catalan influence. Under closer examination, however, the construction at issue turns out to be a common Romance clitic right dislocation (CLRD) structure involving the preposition de and a partitive clitic. The article presents the syntactic distribution of this Sardinian construction and its clitic left dislocation (CLLD) counterpart and compares it to similar structures in French, Catalan, and Italian. The result is that the structure appears in all these languages when a bare NP is dislocated, including split-QP/NumP/NP constructions: In all these languages, the dislocated indefinite NP is marked by de/di and a partitive clitic (Sardinian nde, French en, Italian ne, Catalan en/ne) shows up. The article ends with a Minimalist analysis, in which clitics are the spell-out of a probe in v that triggers movement of a complement to the specifier of vP to overcome a phase boundary. In this account, a probe that targets indefinite NPs assigns partitive case, while the probe itself is spelled out as a partitive clitic. While taking Sardinian as a starting point, the article bears on more general issues and unveils a common mechanism in one group of Romance languages.

In Catalan, -isme ‘-ism’, -itis, and -metre ‘-meter’ create new words that do not follow the WFRs described in grammar books and dictionaries. As a result, these lexical innovations, such as panxacontentisme (panxacontent ‘carefree’ + -ism ‘-ism’), titulitis (títol ‘certificate’ + ‘-itis’), and emocionòmetre (emoció ‘emotion’ + -metre ‘-meter’), tend to be considered transgressive. The main aim of this paper is to provide a close review of grammar books and dictionaries among other sources to compare the rules described in the literature and the data provided by the bank of neologisms of the Observatori de Neologia. Since language changes and variations are inherent phenomena of any living language, the deviation experienced by these bound morphemes could be conceived as an example of linguistic change and not only as a one-time transgression. In addition, in order to check whether these linguistic changes are specific to the Catalan language, I reviewed some English, French, and Spanish literature. Finally, a set of diachronic corpora, that covers the time span from the 11th century until the present day, is used to study the first examples of these phenomena in the Catalan language. The results point out that in Catalan, these changes can be traced back to the second half of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and that they cannot be considered language-specific, since they affect the different languages under study.

Abstract:
This article aims to single out quasi-conditional constructions in Catalan and describe their main types. The author proceeds from the hypothesis that Catalan quasi-conditional constructions must show considerable similarity with quasi-conditional constructions in Russian, English, French, and other languages. The number of the constructions addressed is about 1 000 examples from Catalan texts by native Catalan authors and about 2 000 examples from Catalan texts by non-Catalan authors, selected by total sampling. The paper shows that quasi-conditional constructions, although formally similar to conditional constructions, differ on certain points from them. Their protasis does not express hypothetical condition, apodosis doesn’t imply consequence, the condition-consequence meaning is often missing from them altogether. In contrast to conditional constructions, transformation of quasi-conditionals ones into formally narrative constructions doesn’t change their meaning. Quasi-conditional constructions can be split into five major groups: presumptive constructions, constructions with protasis in the function of parenthesis, conditional-evaluative constructions, conditional-causal constructions, and logical conclusion constructions. The observables selected as criteria for this classification include: Construction meaning (comparative, existential, evaluative, causative constructions etc.); Changeability of the main dependent clause order; Use of markers. Both my analysis and literature on conditional constructions in other languages confirm that the structure of Catalan quasi-conditional constructions is similar to their counterparts in other languages. The findings can be used for teaching purposes as well as for research in Catalan, other Romance languages, or in typology/syntax.

Resum: Aquest article estudia les descripcions de la llengua catalana fetes pels viatgers estrangers que van recórrer els territoris de parla catalana en l’últim terç del segle xix. També analitza les observacions i percepcions lingüístiques d’aquests sobre la llengua catalana i sobre l’ús que en fan els habitants d’aquests territoris. En relació amb el segon objectiu, ens interessa saber si reconeixien que la llengua que parlaven els valencians és la mateixa que la dels catalans, mallorquins i altres veïns de la catalanofonia; quina posició ocupa la llengua catalana entre la resta de llengües romàniques; si el català té el mateix estatus que el castellà o el francès o bé el consideraven un dialecte. En molts casos no parlen de la llengua amb tant de detall perquè l’objectiu dels seus viatges era un altre, però sovint de les seves diferents afirmacions podem deduir els seus posicionaments per a respondre aquestes preguntes. It also analyses their observations and linguistic perceptions of the Catalan language, as well as the language spoken by the inhabitants of these territories. Regarding the second objective, we are particularly interested in knowing if they recognise that the language spoken by Valencians is the same as that of the Catalans, Majorcans, and other neighbours of the Catalan-speaking world; what position occupy the Catalan language among the rest of the Romance languages; if they consider that Catalan has the same status as Spanish and French or if they considered it was a dialect. In many cases they do not talk about the language in such detail because the purpose of their travels was different, but often from their different descriptions and statements we can deduce their positions and opinions to answer these questions. Abstract:
The article is devoted to non-prototypical structurally separate conditional constructions (NSCC) in Catalan in comparison with Spanish and French. These represent two (or more) separate sentences, one of which expresses condition and the other – consequence without conditional conjunctions. The relevance and novelty of this study follows from the fact that NSCCs have not received sufficient attention yet which is particularly true for Catalan. There is no consensus in specialist literature as regards the terms used to describe this kind of constructions or define their scope. The list of terms for NSCCs in Russian linguistics is too long, and includes the following: “non-prototypical constructions”, “conditional constructions formed as a “syntactic unity”, “supraphrasal unity”, among others. The paper states that it’s necessary to distinguish prototypical conditional constructions from the constructions with conditional con-junction “si”, on one hand, and non-prototypical constructions, on the other. And integral conditional constructions should be distinguished from structurally separate constructions (also referred to as formally separate). There are also non-prototypical structurally separate conditional constructions with interrogative words expressing condition in the protasis and imperatives constructions expressing consequence in the apodosis, constructions with imperatives (verbs like ‘suppose’) expressing condition in the protasis and interrogative sentences expressing consequence in the apodosis. NSCCs can use different moods: imperative, indicative, subjunctive, and conditional. Imperative forms are compatible both with semantics of conditions and consequences. There are also NSCCs without imperatives. And besides that, between the first sentence expressing the condition and the second sentence expressing the consequence filler utterances can occur. As typically in prototypical conditional constructions, in NSCC the condition and the consequence expressed also belong to the same subject of speech (speaker), though in some rare cases may be inserted, as a link be-tween the first and the second sentences of the construction, an interrogative sentence asked by another subject. NSCCs don’t allow the use of subordinating conjunctions, the opposite being a clear sign of prototypical constructions, but the consequence can be introduced with markers meaning ‘then’. The study is based on the texts by Catalan authors, excerpts from Catalan journals and their translations into Spanish and French; texts generated by the author’s informers, native speakers have also been used.

In order to respond to this need, we designed a research project examining how Norwegian and Catalan student teachers express and negotiate their ideas about an Italian–French picturebook in a teacher–researcher designed ecocritical literature conversation (ELC). The collected material, consisting of students’ notes and sound recorded and transcribed group discussions, was analysed following the steps of content analysis with an emphasis on finding evidence of dialogic competencies and ecocritical competencies. Although the students did not explicitly integrate ecocritical terminology in their discussions, we found that when structured in line with ideas of dialogic teaching, ecocritical thinking, and literature didactics, literature conversations proved to be a useful tool for these students to critically engage with and negotiate about representations of nature and ecological wisdom from the selected picturebook.

Això ja ha estat observat en diversos estudis previs, que han considerat aquesta excepcionalitat com a resultat de la interferència del francès o de l’italià, o que l’han qualificada de cultisme. En aquest estudi pretenem analitzar l’ús del mot a l’obra i formular una hipòtesi sobre la singularitat que planteja. Per a fer-ho, caracteritzarem l’adverbi semànticament i funcional en català antic, amb una perspectiva diacrònica (s. xii-xvi), i contrastarem els resultats obtinguts amb els del Curial e Güelfa. D’altra banda, i prenent com a fonament diversos estudis sobre els derivats de tota via en francès, italià i castellà, compararem els resultats obtinguts amb les dades sobre aquests adverbis al s. xv. De l’estudi, concloem que la caracterització del mot al Curial e Güelfa no es correspon amb la de totavia en català antic ni amb la del paral·lel francès; en canvi, s’acosta més a la del castellà coetani i, sobretot, a la de l’italià tuttavia. This has already been observed in several previous studies, which have considered this exceptionality as a result of interference from French or Italian, or which have qualified it as cultism. In this study, we intend to analyse the use of the word in the novel and to formulate a hypothesis about its singularity. To do so, we will characterise the adverb semantically and functionally in Old Catalan, with a diachronic perspective (12th-16th century), and we will contrast the results obtained with those of the Curial e Güelfa. On the other hand, and taking as a basis several studies on the derivatives of TOTA VIA in French, Italian and Spanish, we will compare the results obtained with the data on these adverbs in the 15th century. In this study, we conclude that the characterisation of the word in the Curial e Güelfa does not correspond to that of totavia in Old Catalan nor to that of the French parallel; it is closer to the characterisation of the adverb in contemporary Spanish and, above all, to that of the Italian tuttavia. We conclude, therefore, that we are dealing with a –possible– new semantic Italianism. In 1492 the first edition of the bestselling almanac, the Reportorio de los tiempos, was published by Pablo Hurus in Zaragoza. Written by the converso Andrés de Li, the Reportorio incorporated in toto the Lunari, a Catalan text by Bernat de Granollachs, and published in 1485 in Barcelona. The Lunari contained month by month lunar charts of the years 1485 to 1550. These two works were enormously popular and versions of them appeared in over ninety editions in French, Catalan, Castilian, Latin, and Italian. It was probably the extreme popularity of Granollachs’ text that led to its expansion by Li and the subsequent success of the Reportorio. In the early days of printing, the success of each volume, and indeed the survival of the press, was determined for the most part by the type of work selected for production. This essay explores the evolution of the Lunari to the Reportorio de los tiempos, particularly in terms of text selection, marketability, and medieval traditions of textual incorporation.

We start from the premise that the Francophonie cannot be grasped as a uniform block, but rather as a set of communities that must be analysed empirically. Based on this observation, we propose a case study of the Francophonie in the Principality of Andorra. The Andorran case has common characteristics with other Francophone contexts, but also has many particularities. The French language lives in a multilingual ecosystem where it fulfils only formal functions. Andorra has a vernacular language ‐ Catalan ‐ which is also a vehicular language, but in strong competition with Castilian. Andorran society is extremely diverse, with a national group that does not make up half the population. This group co-habits with communities of nationals from countries of the same region (Spain, Portugal and France). Finally, despite the low social presence of French, it plays a predominant role as a language of instruction. The article looks at the literature on Francophonie and proposes the concepts used to characterize specifically the Andorran francophonie. Then it presents an objective characterization of the Andorran Francophonie through the study of its constitutive elements. Finally, it discusses the subjective characterization of the Andorran Francophonie.

Per fer-ho, recorrem a la lexicografia històrica de les llengües ambientals de la Nàpols de l’època (el francès i l’italià) i a les fonts literàries (autors i textos, obres, tòpics i figures literàries) de què beu l’obra. Així, mirarem de discernir si, efectivament, no menys és un altre italianisme, en aquest cas, no observat fins ara. abstract: In Trinity College Cambridge MS R.3.20, John Shirley offers a famously enigmatic rubric to his copy of Chaucer's Complaint of Venus . He cites Chaucer as the translator of the piece and notes, correctly, that Oton de Granson composed the English poem's original. He then claims that Chaucer's poem is describing a court scandal: an adulterous affair between John Holland, Earl of Huntington, and Isabel of York, daughter of King Pedro of Castile and sisterin-law to John of Gaunt. Shirley's rubrics thus appear to construct a very loose Anglo-Iberian connection for Chaucer's translation of Granson from French to English, so loose as to be generally dismissed by scholars as Shirley's gossipy invention. As it happens, however, Oton de Granson was imprisoned in Castile in 1372, in the same year that Isabel came from Castile to England to marry Edmund Langley, Duke of York. This actual Iberian connection is strengthened by the existence of a fifteenth-century Catalan miscellany that anthologizes Catalan poets with Granson, including the ballades that form Chaucer's source as well as poetry written by one of Granson's fellow captives from 1372. From this perspective, Shirley's shadowy evocation of Castile starts to look less like gossip and more like an attempt to make sense of lyric's transregional movements while underscoring Chaucer's internationalism. What is at stake for Shirley in insisting on this disorientingly transregional moment? What is at stake—for both Shirley and the Catalan compiler—in collecting lyric that moves so porously across geographic boundaries for the purposes of a canonizing project? How, in short, might these lyric miscellanies challenge our idea of nationalizing canon construction?

According to the French historian Pierre Nora, the “collapse of memory” in contemporary society has caused the dissappearance of “milieux de mémorie, authentic surroundings of memory.” Given that we no longer live in a society in which “memory is experienced collectively,” it is necessary for us to create lieux de mémorie, artificial places that act as a Space to remember. This article takes Can Traver (a country house situated in La Garrotxa) as an example and provides an interpretation of the country home as a lieu de mémoire, as a place that reflects the social, economic and legal structures of the rural Catalan territories. The arquitectural typology of the house symbolizes the rebirth of determining values of the history of Catalonia, or, to put it another way, it permits the attribution of a series of meanings related to the Catalan national identity, such as the rural origins of Catalonia or the importance of the family and the insitution of the hereu (first born). These traditional values and country way of life find their architectural translation in the country home. For this reason it is possible to explain the expansion of rural tourism, agrotourism and ecotourism throughout the Catalan territory. This new type of tourism is not simply a way of profiting from rural properties that have lost their agricultural function but rather it is a promesse de bonheur, the potential to experience something authentic, traditional and belonging to the past (even though this experience has nothing to do with the real life of the country or the people who live and work there).

This study looks both at various factors and at a number of interre-lated individuals and groups, all of which played a role in determining the fate of these works. The analysis includes a look at the consequences of the inclusion of the author’s works on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum and at the effects of the Franco regime’s censorship. There is also a discussion of the feminist movement’s embrace of this author, the fact that her life and work have become the focus of tourist attractions, the publishing practices associated with her books and the main challenges involved in translating the works.

Summary: The article analyses the relationship between folktales of the ATU 665 type such as The Wise Brothers, specifically between three Majorcan oral versions collected towards the end of the 19th century, and three works of learned written literature from different countries and periods: The Catalan novel Tirant lo Blanc by Joanot Martorell (15th c.), the French novel Zadig by Voltaire (18th c.) and the Italian novel Il nome della rosa by Umberto Eco (20th c.). From a narrative with the same origin in folklore, which develops a plot based on the hero’s extraordinary capacity for deductive reasoning and sensory perception, each writer inserts it into his work and uses it in a particular way with a specific purpose. As visualized by three filmmakers from outside Catalonia, Barcelona functions as the backdrop to geographic and emotional displacement: the city is a site of cultural (mis)understanaing; a space of clashes between tradition and a modernity identified with the tides of globalization; and a place where Catalan culture and nationalism coexist with and/or recede from the voluntary exile’s awareness. Examined through the lens of American filmmaker Whit Stillman’s Barcelona (1994), Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s Todo sobre mi madre (1999) and French cineaste Cedric Klapisch’s L’auberge espagnole (2002), Barcelona occupies an enormous visual terrain on the screen while staking a more narrowly-defined claim to the narrative thread of each film. These films depict Barcelona as a complex character and draft it into tales of individuals who are both seeking and rejecting the city as a guiding force in the assumption of a new identity forged outside their native terrain. The result, while unique in each cinematic incarnation, is that the visual space of the city acts as an emotional force, both locally, as it is intertwined with the displaced lives of the human characters, and globally, as international audiences internalize Barcelona as the face of late-twentieth and early-twenty-first- century migratory movements and the consequent dialectic between “old” and “new” Barcelona. By exploring the apparition of Barcelona in these three films as an outward expression of the changing dynamics among Catalonia, Spain and the world, this article examines the city’s perceived role in a global culture of displacement and voluntary exile as well as the notion of Catalan culture and identity as translated cinematically for international audiences. Although Barcelona inhabits a central visual and emotional role in each film, the cityscape ultimately does not counteract the lack of a particularly Catalan identity created for the displaced characters onscreen. While these films and characters succeed in internalizing Barcelona during their sojourn, they do not adopt a Catalan identity in the process.

All major Romance languages have patterns of the type jaune paille for expressing shades of colour represented by some prototypical object. The first constituent of this pattern is a colour term, while the second one designates a prototypical representative of the colour shade. The present paper starts with a short discussion of the controversial grammatical status of this pattern and its constituents. Its main aim, however, concerns the origin and diffusion of this pattern. We have not found hard and fast evidence that Medieval Italian pigment compounds of the type verderame influenced the rise of the jaune paille pattern, which first appears in French in the 16th century. This pattern continued to be a minority solution during the 17th century, but established itself during the 18th century. In the 19th century, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese adopted the pattern jaune paille, while it did not reach Catalan and Romanian before the 20th century.

Abstract The paper provides a state of the art in research on prepositional adverbials in Romance that combine a preposition with an adjective, e.g., Sp. en breve ‘in short’ (= PA-pattern). It therefore reviews the existing bibliography on Romance in general, Latin, Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish. The theoretical background is the hypothesis that the PA-pattern could have played a relevant role as a third way of forming adverbials in the diachrony of Romance, paralleling adverbial adjectives (e.g., breve used as an adverb: hablar breve) and derived adverbs (e.g., brevemente). The review confirms that the PA-pattern is marginal in (written) Latin but rises abruptly in early Romance, suggesting a “hidden” past in spoken Latin. This is corroborated by the fact that similar PA-patterns are used in all Romance languages. However, these insights have often to be deduced from marginal observations on the adverbials in use. As yet, research has not systematically studied the role of PA adverbials in the diachrony of Romance.

Abstract Background There is a need to scale-up effective physical activity (PA) programmes for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), where the uptake of PA interventions is low. Identifying real-life workplace practices in PA could contribute to a better understanding of what PA programmes might be most grounded in the ‘real world’. However, there is a scarcity of evidence showing what gets done. This study aimed to identify, describe and comprehensively summarize the real-life implementations of workplace PA initiatives, particularly in Europe, as a prior step to disseminating future feasible PA practices for SMEs. Methods A scoping review of grey literature included a systematic search in the Google advanced search platform that permuted a combination of key concepts (PA, workplace, interventions/programmes), internet domains, and search operators in six different languages (Catalan, Finnish, French, Dutch, English and Spanish) between 2015 and November 2020. The analysis process was iterative, and multiple methods were used to sort, group and categorize the initiatives. Results There were a total of 713 real-life workplace PA initiatives from different-sized organizations identified. These were categorized into five themes: active work and living, exercise and fitness programs, management and leadership, communication and dissemination, and facilities. Finally, feature trees showing a menu for real-life workplace PA practices were implemented. Conclusions Identifying real-life practice providing a state-of-the-art snapshot of current PA practices in workplaces, which is a starting point to better understand feasible practices in the context of small- and medium-sized workplaces.

In this paper we present their empirical properties and argue that, despite the empirical differences, state nominalizations and event nominalizations can receive a unified account. We show that in Spanish, Catalan, French, English and German the question of whether a deverbal nominalization denotes a state or an event, or is ambiguous between both readings depends on independent properties of the verbal base, allowing us to propose a unified account of both classes of nominalizations: the productive nominalizers in these languages can only denote the aspectual notions contained in the base's Aktionsart. We further argue that other languages, like Slovenian, have productive nominalizers that can operate over the external aspect of the predicate; in these cases, the nominalization can denote aspectual notions not contained in the base's Aktionsart.

Contrary to perceived wisdom, we explore the role of machine translation (MT) in assisting with the translation of literary texts, considering both its limitations and its potential. Our motivations to explore this subject are twofold, arising from: (1) recent research advances in MT, and (2) the recent emergence of the ebook, which together allow us for the first time to build literature-specific MT systems by training statistical MT models on novels and their professional translations. A key challenge in literary translation is that one needs to preserve not only the meaning (as in other domains such as technical translation) but also the reading experience, so a literary translator needs to carefully select from the possible translation options. We explore the role of translation options in literary translation, especially in the context of the relatedness of the languages involved. We take Camus’ L’Étranger in the original French language and provide qualitative and quantitative analyses for its translations into English (a less-related language) and Italian (more closely related). Unsurprisingly, the MT output for Italian seems more straightforward to be post-edited. We also show that the performance of MT has improved over the last two years for this particular book, and that the applicability of MT does not only depend on the text to be translated but also on the type of translation that we are trying to produce. We then translate a novel from Spanish-to-Catalan with a literature-specific MT system. We assess the potential of this approach by discussing the translation quality of several representative passages.

The review presents a collective monograph published in the scientific series “Studia literaria” of the Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies of the Research Center of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, which for the first time presents in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary manner the functioning of state censorship as an institution of official control over sociocultural life Slovenes in the territories of the Habsburg Empire, and then Austria-Hungary in the period from 1789 to 1918. Throughout the century under review, Slovenian writers, scientists, editors, publishers, critics, and journalists faced imperial censorship as the most important factor regulating their activities. The institution of censorship itself experienced a number of transformations during this period: from secularization and bureaucracy during the reign of Maria Theresa to the repressive aggressiveness of censorship practices under Franz Joseph. Based on a broad historical, cultural and literary context, the authors – literary scholars, historians, cultural scientists, museum workers, bibliographers – explore the influence of censorship on the process of national revival and the work of outstanding Slovenian authors A. T. Linhart, F. Prešeren, I. Cankar, publishing, periodicals, national theater. The monograph consists of a preface, an extensive introduction and two sections arranged in chronological order, the first of which covers the period from the Great French to the March Revolution, the second from the March Revolution to the First World War. Each section includes ten author’s chapters. The book is equipped with a name index, information about the authors and a detailed English-language summary, including article-by-article annotations. From the beginning of the 20th century to approximately the 1940s the strongest (and, in many ways, the definitive) tide of linguistic substitution in favour of the French language reaches the Occitan speech area at the same time as an Occitan cultural consciousness develops, which comes from the relationship between the Catalan Renaixença and the Occitan Félibrige movements, both going back to the middle of the previous century. In this context, the case of Mistral and his contacts to e.g. Verdaguer have attracted researcher’s interest. The Gascony extensions of this literary correlation are however less reputed. At that point Miquèu de Camelat writes his work. Born in Arrens, a small village in the Bigorre mountains, he is well known as author of Belina, a Pyrenean version of Mistral’s Mireia. With far more explicit ideologic aspects, Camelat publishes in 1920 Mort e viva, a piece that presents itself evidently as the big epic poem from the Gascony Pyrenees, obviously inspired by Verdaguer and concentrating on the important events that – according to the author – determined and still determine the existence or non-existence of the Gascon nation. The comparison of Camelat with his contemporaries, especially with Gascons like Bernat Sarrieu form Luchon and with the Aranese Jusèp Condò, shows us how the same cultural space (provided that we assume a cultural continuity in the whole of the Pyrenean area, at least concerning forms of interaction between man and mountain) was conceived in a total different manner by the Gascons and the Catalans and – depending on the various historic conditions – was transformed differently into literature.

Abstract We present ALMA, a new research project aimed at investigating the interaction between language and knowledge practices from AD 1100 to 1500. Our primary question is how Medieval Italian, French, Occitan, Catalan, and Spanish developed into languages of knowledge and scholarship (German Wissen(schafts)sprachen) in permanent opposition to and exchange with the predominant Latin (but also with Arab, Greek, and Hebrew). Focusing on two domains, medicine and law, the project combines linguistics, text philology, and the history of science with the Digital Humanities and ontology engineering. ALMA will create two multi-lingual, domain-specific text corpora by integrating text editions of hitherto unedited manuscripts and incunabula, and digitized printed editions. Our corpus-linguistic exploration of the ALMA corpora will provide the basis for lexical-semantic studies that analyze emerging knowledge networks and the depth of their linguistic representations. We hypothesize that language evolution and the development of more complex linguistic structures will allow for measuring the impact of knowledge practices on medieval vernacular languages. We will trace the dissemination of lexical material across languages, language varieties, cultural spaces, and periods. This will enable us to follow specific vernacular communication channels. We will use cutting-edge technologies to compile, publish, and share our findings, and to model them in the form of historicized ontologies and Linked Data. Our onomasiological, ontology-driven approach will result in the creation of domain models that can be re-used within the Semantic Web. This has great potential to be relevant for researchers from different disciplines.

La actividad consiste en identificar los tópicos literarios clásicos en diferentes composiciones poéticas o musicales contemporáneas en cualquier idioma objeto de estudio (español, catalán, inglés, francés, alemán o italiano) y después traducir los textos seleccionados a dos o más lenguas, respetando no solo el contenido, sino todos los aspectos formales como estructura, métrica (número de sílabas y combinación del acento de intensidad con el ritmo musical, en su caso) y rima, principalmente. Cuando se trata de composiciones musicales, los alumnos interpretan en directo ante la clase sus propias versiones. Создаются учебные пособия и учебники по языку специальности. Однако остается открытым вопрос создания учебных пособий для узкопрофильных специалистов, для которых иностранный язык – это инструмент для осуществления своей профессиональной деятельности на конкретном участке производства. Цель – конструирование модели учебного пособия по иностранному языку для специальных целей в сфере туризма. Научная новизна исследования заключается в разработке и применении новых моделей учебного обеспечения языковой подготовки узкопрофильных специалистов. Материал и методы. Материалом исследования послужили теоретические труды отечественных и зарубежных ученых, работающих в системе профессиональной подготовки кадров для сферы производства и услуг. Применялись следующие методы: анализ научно-методической литературы, научное наблюдение, обобщение опыта, анализ и синтез, сравнение, моделирование, экстраполирование. Эмпирическая база включала в себя результаты практического применения компетентностного подхода и коммуникативного метода при обучении французскому языку персонала в сфере туризма. Результаты и обсуждение. Многолетний опыт подготовки кадров для сферы туризма показал результативность компетентностного подхода в обучении французскому языку для специальных целей, эффективность программы «Французский язык в сфере туризма» и выявил необходимость построения учебного пособия по французскому языку для специальных целей. Предлагаемая авторская модель учебного пособия «Французский язык в сфере туризма» предназначена для студентов языковых вузов, факультетов туристского профиля, персонала гостиниц и турагентств. Структура учебного пособия включает следующие компоненты: модульность курса, специальную лексику (термины и профессионализмы), перечень профессиональных навыков и коммуникативных ситуаций делового общения, методические приемы, позволяющие сформировать у обучающихся готовность к профессиональной деятельности на иностранном языке. Заключение. Разработанные и апробированные курсы французского языка в сфере туризма следуют базовому принципу языка для специальных целей – использование аутентичных материалов: гидов, каталогов, туристических брошюр, путеводителей, а также сайтов гостиниц, туроператоров, регионов Франции. Однако обучающиеся нуждаются в учебном пособии предложенного курса – пособии, в котором будут системно представлены модули, задачи освоения каждого модуля, специфика упражнений/тестов и требования к заданиям модуля. Данная модель учебного пособия может быть экстраполирована на другие языки и профиль подготовки специалистов. Introduction. The problem of training competent specialists in the sphere of service and production has remained relevant over the past decade. The demand for personnel with professional linguistic competence sets a problem for the teaching community to develop new training courses and programs in a foreign language of a specialty, an important component of which is mastering the language of the professional sphere. Teaching aids and textbooks on the language of the specialty are being created. However, the question of creating textbooks for single-subject specialists, for whom a foreign language is a tool for carrying out their professional activities, remains open. Aim and objectives. The aim is to create a model of a textbook on a foreign language for specific purposes in the sphere of tourism. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the development and application of new models of language training for narrow-profile specialists. Material and methods. The material of the research is based on the theoretical works of national and foreign scientists working in the system of professional training for the sphere of production and services. The methods used at the empirical and theoretical levels are in close interaction: analysis of scientific and methodological literature, scientific observation, generalization of experience, analysis and synthesis, comparison, modeling, extrapolation. The empirical basis of the research is the results of the practical application of the competence-based approach and the communicative method in teaching French to personnel in the field of tourism. Results and discussion. Many years of experience in training personnel for the tourism sector showed the effectiveness of the competence-based approach in teaching French for specific purposes, the effectiveness of the program “French in the sphere of tourism” and revealed the necessity to design a textbook on French for specific purposes. The proposed author’s model of the textbook «French in the sphere of tourism» is intended for students of linguistic universities, faculties of tourism, staff of hotels and travel agencies. The structure of the textbook includes the following components: course modularity, special vocabulary (terms and professional jargon), a list of professional skills and communicative situations of business communication, methodological techniques that allow students to form a readiness for professional activity using a foreign language. Conclusion. The developed and tested French language courses in the sphere of tourism follow the main/basic principle of the language for specific purposes – the use of authentic materials: guides, catalogs, travel brochures, travel guides, as well as websites of hotels, tour operators, and regions of France. However, learners need a teaching aid for the proposed course. A textbook is needed, which will systematically present the modules, the tasks of mastering each module, the specifics of exercises/tests and the requirements for the tasks of the module. The author’s model of the textbook “French in the sphere of tourism” is focused on specialization in three sectors: hotel and restaurant business, tourism as an industry/service sector, where the realia of industrial, organizational and managerial culture are of great importance. The emphasis is on the formation of appropriate psychological attitudes of service personnel in accordance with the requirements of European service standards. This textbook model can be extrapolated to other languages and training profile.

Double-click Select to translate After turning 40 years old, testosterone hormone in men will decrease, but some data regarding the effect of Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) on cardiovascular safety is still controversial. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate the effect of TRT on lipid profile and body fat in men with Late-Onset Hypogonadism (LOH) which affects the incidence of cardiovascular disease. The literature search was performed on the database, such as PubMed and Wiley Online Library and also additional manual searches were performed on the reference list of related studies. The identified articles were selected according to the eligibility criteria. A total of four articles were used in this systematic review and the quality of the study was assessed using the Jadad score. From the four studies that is used, four study discussed the effect of TRT on lipid profiles and two studies discussed the effect of TRT on body fat. On the administration of testosterone gel 50mg/day, all lipid profiles improved after nine months of intervention. However, with IM testosterone after one year, the improvement was only partial. All studies discussing the effect of TRT on body fat showed uniform results, namely a decrease in fat percentage. The results obtained by the studies included in this systematic review suggest that TRT can improve lipid profiles and also decrease body fat in men with LOH.

Following a systematic approach to mapping evidence on this topic would highlight concepts, theories, sources, and knowledge gaps in this area.MethodsThis review used the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) criteria for the selection, reading, and analysis of studies in this area. We searched five literature databases (Web of Science, SCOPUS, library catalog of the Faculty of Sport and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra—EBSCO Discovery Services, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar). Eligible articles contained the word “Pilates,” and the human movement variability was analyzed. Any type of study (except reviews) could be eligible and must have been published between 1 January 2002 and 30 November 2022, in Portuguese, Spanish, French, or English.ResultsOur search identified five eligible entries. Only one study used the Pilates method in its intervention, pointing to a more significant variability of hip–knee coordination, suggesting more diversified coordination patterns, and maintaining the variability of the angular position of the joint.ConclusionVery few studies have examined movement variability in Pilates, and only one applied an ecological framework.

ABSTRACT In this article we sought to describe how self-mutilation is understood by educational institutions and what are the actions taken in the face of the phenomenon, based on a systematic literature review. Searching the BVS Portal, SciELO and the Capes Theses Catalog, using the index terms self-mutilation, self-injury, self-injurious behavior and self-destructive behavior, 20 documents were selected and submitted to content analysis. It was identified that the studies are recent, predominantly qualitative, influenced by Behavior Analysis and Psychoanalysis, and developed with adolescents from public schools. Self-mutilation was understood as resulting from physiological conditions, way of giving meaning to suffering, result of social contagion, communication attempt, manifestation of suicidal ideation and behavior of individuals with atypical development. There are few reports of intervention in the face of the problem, covering clinical, preventive and professional training practices. The need to implement interventions in schools, based on social and collective understandings of self-mutilation, is highlighted.

Käesolev artikkel keskendub sellele, kuidas professor Talvet on tõlgendanud luule ja poeetika, kuid ka kirjandusajaloo, iseäranis barokk-kirjanduse alaseid küsimusi oma kirjandusteaduslikes esseedes. Vaadeldakse ka tema tõlketegevuse mahtu ja tõlketöö põhimõtteid. Jüri Talvet (born in 1945) is a poet and a scholar of comparative literature, Chair Professor of World Literature at the University of Tartu. His numerous translations of poetry and poetical fiction from the Romance languages and, to a lesser extent, from English, reflect his views on world poetry. Those views are also expressed in his theoretical writings from the years of 1977 to 2015. Having studied English literature as the main subject at the University of Tartu, he early developed an interest in Spanish, in other Iberian languages, and in the Iberoamerican literatures. His translations from that area include works from medieval and early modern literature as well as notable literary achievements from the 20th century and the contemporary era. Talvet’s interpretations of Federico García Lorca and the “Latin American boom” authors are supported by profound insights into the philosophy, aesthetics, and poetics of the 17th century Spanish Baroque literature, known as the literary Golden Age of Spain. The influence which Talvet’s activities have exerted has widened the horizons of Estonia’s literary culture: while in the early 20th century, the previous German, Russian and Finnish leanings were supplemented by orientations to, and translations from, French and Italian literatures, Talvet has helped to enrich the Estonian literary landscape with the mentality and traditions of even more distant language areas, such as Castilian (Spanish), Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, and the Latin American countries. In the section “Quevedo and Góngora” of this article, Talvet’s interpretation of some of the key issues of dispute in the Baroque literature of Spain are studied, based both on his theoretical essays and on his translations of the poetry of Francisco de Quevedo. Talvet has attempted to use the terms of the Baroque philosopher and writer Baltasar Gracián, agudeza, concepto (definable approximately as “conceit” or “wit”) and conceptismo, for the analysis of the late 20th century Estonian poetry. On that background, defnitions of conceptismo and cultismo (the other main school in Spanish Baroque poetry) are offered in this article, with implications that those definitions may have for understanding different styles and methods of poetry in general, and the characteristics of Talvet’s own poems and poetry translations in particular. To escape diffusion in pure sensuality and verbal indulgence, poetry has to rely on concepts as well as images. Talvet’s interpretations of poetry and poetical thinking are found to be close to conceptismo, or with a considerable amount of conceptuality inherent to them. The juxtaposition of paradoxical ideas from different levels of reality, social and psychic, is seen as the essential poetical method that Talvet refers to as he defines, quoting Yuri Lotman, the structural-semantic code of poetry as being “paradigmatic”. In the final section of the article, Talvet’s 23 book-length published translations are listed, including translations from Spanish, Catalan, English and French. The list does not include numerous translations of single poems or cycles of poetry that have appeared in literary journals, nor his contributions to anthologies of poetry, nor the translations from his native Estonian into a foreign language, such as Spanish or English, in which he has participated. His translations encompass lyrical works as well as fiction and plays. Talvet has translated classical European poetry, such as the sonnets of Petrarch and Quevedo and Provençal poems, as well as the rhymed poems of American poets into Estonian with complete metrical correspondence and full rhymes. However, in the latest decades Talvet has expressed scepticism in the sense and feasibility of attempting to convey the rhyming complexities of the major European literatures into Estonian, a language with a considerably smaller potential for finding full rhymes. Accordingly, his three translations of Spanish Baroque drama (by Calderón and Tirso de Molina) employ a liberal method of versification. In all his versatile activities as a poet, a translator, and a theorist of poetry, Professor Talvet has shown great devotion to developing and cultivating aesthetic values. A lot of his colleagues and students have benefited from his friendly advice. Thinking of his contributions to Estonia’s literary tradition, one may repeat and paraphrase the sentence that he used for the conclusion of his essay on the Catalan poet Salvador Espriu in 1977: “to write (and to translate) poetry is to work for the benefit of the people.”

AbstractMarriage and the relationship between husband and wife in medieval literature have often been analyzed from many different points of view. However, there is an aspect which remains unexplored and this is the analysis from a discursive perspective of the conversation between the knight and his lady before he departs in search of adventures, war or whatever other reason. This study aims to verify if there is any kind of coincidence or similarity in the arguments used by the lady in different texts, when she tries to stop her husband from leaving. Therefore, in the present study conversations concerning the departing of a knight from his lady shall be analyzed in Icelandic, German, French, Catalan and Spanish chivalric texts of the Middle Ages, taking into account the consequences of the knight’s departure for the lady, for the knight and for the marriage bond itself. A detailed analysis of the lady’s arguments intending to keep the knight by her side seems to lead to a hypothesis concerning the existence of similar arguments across literary texts in different languages.

Who is a native signer? Since around 95% of deaf infants are born into a hearing family, deaf signers are exposed to a sign language at various moments of their life, and not only from birth. Moreover, the linguistic input they are exposed to is not always a fully fledged natural sign language. In this situation, is the notion of native signer as someone exposed to language from birth of any use? We review the results of the first large-scale cross-linguistic investigation on the effects of age of exposure to sign language. This research involved about 45 Deaf adult signers in each of three sign languages (Catalan Sign Language, French Sign Language, and Italian Sign Language). Across the three languages, participants were divided into three groups – those exposed from birth, those between 1 and 5 years of age, and those exposed between 6 and 15 years of age – and received a battery of tests designed for each language targeting various aspects of morphosyntactic competence. In particular, the tests focused on both those morphosyntactic phenomena that are known from the spoken language literature to be good detectors of language impairment or delay (i.e., wh-interrogatives and relative clauses) and on morphosyntactic phenomena that are sign language specific (i.e., role shift and directional verbs). The results showed a clear effect of being native, with significant differences across languages and tests between signers exposed to sign language from birth and those exposed in the 1st years of life. This confirms the life-long importance of language exposure from birth and the reliability of the notion of “nativeness”, at least for syntax. On the other hand, while in most domains the differences observed between populations might be differences in performance, for some specific constructions, signers belonging to the three groups may have different grammars. This latter finding challenges the generalized use of native signers’ grammar as the baseline for language description and language assessment.

The topic variable is used in research on disinformation to analyze thematic differences in the content of false news, rumors, conspiracies, etc. Those topics are frequently based on national news agendas, i.e. producers of disinformation address current national or world events (e.g. elections, immigration, etc.) (Humprecht, 2019). Field of application/theoretical foundation: Topics are a central yet under-researched aspect of research on online disinformation (Freelon & Wells, 2020). The research interest is to find out which topics are taken up and spread by disinformation producers. The focus of this research is both on specific key topics for which sub-themes are identified (e.g. elections, climate change, Covid-19) and, more generally, on the question of which misleading content is disseminated (mostly on social media). Methodologically, the identification of topics is often a first step followed by further analysis of the content (Ferrara, 2017). Thus, the analysis of topics is linked to the detection of disinformation, which represents a methodological challenge. Topics can be identified inductively or deductively. Inductive analyses often use a data corpus, for example social media data, and try to identify topics using techniques such as topic modelling (e.g. Boberg et al., 2020). Deductive analyses frequently use topic lists to classify contents. Topics lists are initially created based on the literature on the respective topic or with the help of databases, e.g. by fact-checkers. References/combination with other methods of data collection: Studies on topics of disinformation use both manual and automated content analysis or combinations of both to investigate the occurrence of different topics in texts (Boberg et al., 2020; Bradshaw, Howard, Kollanyi, & Neudert, 2020).
