Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the early French in Illinois and tells the story of the state's first black settler, Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable. The scant documentary records of colonial Illinois include the report of a crude census conducted in 1732. Negroes at that time numbered 69 men, 33 women, and 64 children, as compared with 159 white men, 39 women, and an uncertain number of children. The chapter considers a number of factors that connect Jean Baptiste De Saible and the ancient Du Sable family of French ancestry, and suggests that his patronage may be accounted for by a custom of the times: Negro and Indian slavery. It then turns to Du Sable, who spent the years from 1805 to 1814 in and about St. Charles, Missouri. In June 1813, Point Du Sable transferred a house, lot and other property in St. Charles to Eulalie Barode, his grand-daughter, wife of Michael Derais. On October 10, 1814, Du Sable “applied for the benefit of the law relative to insolvents.” He died soon thereafter.

Abstract:
In 1770 Madeleine’s mistress, Anne Despense de la Loge, brought the adolescent Madeleine to Lorient, France, as her servant. Their voyage took them through Isle de France (Mauritius), where the French navy was preparing for war against the British. There, she sold or traded Madeleine to a colonial family from Isle Bourbon, Charles and Marie Anne Routier, despite French Free Soil laws that should have prevented the transfer, gift, or sale. Madeleine’s status as an Indian, rather than an African, made her slave status ambiguous at a time when French policy was increasingly tying African descent to slavery. The Routiers’ colonial wealth was founded in their parents’ service to the French East India Company and the expanding use of slave labor in island plantations.

Abstract:
In the familiar tale of mass migration to France from 1880 onward, we know very little about the hundreds of thousands of women who formed a critical part of those migration waves. This book argues that their relative absence in the historical record hints at a larger and more problematic oversight — the role of sex and gender in shaping the experiences of migrants to France before the Second World War. This compelling history of social citizenship demonstrates how, through the routine application of social policies, state and social actors worked separately toward a shared goal: repopulating France with immigrant families. Filled with voices gleaned from census reports, municipal statistics, naturalization dossiers, court cases, police files, and social worker registers, the book shows how France welcomed foreign-born men and women — mobilizing naturalization, family law, social policy, and welfare assistance to ensure they would procreate, bearing French-assimilated children. Immigrants often embraced these policies because they, too, stood to gain from pensions, family allowances, unemployment benefits, and French nationality. By striking this bargain, they were also guaranteed safety and stability on a tumultuous continent. The book concludes that, in return for generous social provisions and refuge in dark times, immigrants joined the French nation through marriage and reproduction, breadwinning and child-rearing — in short, through families and family-making — which made them more French than even formal citizenship status could.

Abstract:
This chapter recounts the accomplishments of the French composer, harpsichordist, and organist Elisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre (1665–1729). She was the first woman to have a work, her opera Céphale et Procris, staged at the Académie Royale de Musique, the prestigious opera house in Paris. An older contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel, Jacquet de La Guerre had grown up in a family of active and respected musicians, and lived amid the rich cultural environment of Versailles and Paris. In a time when musical life flourished at the court of Louis XIV and among the French capital's urban bourgeoisie, Jacquet de La Guerre's life and art fit neatly into the prosperity, splendor, and turbulence of the grand siècle, when Louis, the “Sun King,” reigned (1643–1715) as an absolute monarch.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the daily lives of a broad spectrum of early St. Louis denizens—from the most humble to the most well-to-do—by focusing on their material possessions based on Charles-Joseph Labuxière's inventory. It begins with a snapshot of the lifestyle of Jean Comparios, a longtime French marine who was deployed to Louisiana early during the French and Indian War and posted up the Mississippi to Fort de Chartres, and Marguerite, a black female slave. It then turns to the material things owned by Pierre-François Brunot D'Inglebert Lefebvre Desruisseau and his wife Marguerite La Ferne; Louis Deshêtres and the Deshêtres family; and Jean-Baptiste Hervieux. The chapter discusses marriages, illnesses, and deaths of early St. Louis denizens as well as their material possessions such as houses, clothing, furniture, and household furnishings.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In this chapter, the author highlights the value of online newspaper archives and digitized census, family history, and other sources that he consulted in his research about little-known scriptwriter from the silent era, Mary Murillo. He begins with a background on Murillo, a screenwriter in American cinema for ten years, then worked in British films for six or more years, and moved to work in French films at the start of the talkies. The fact that she had almost disappeared from dominant film history narratives says much about how women filmmakers have been allowed to slip out of the history of early film and about the low status of scriptwriters generally. The author traces the journey he took in trying to know more about Murillo, from typing her name into Google and sifting through family history sources, shipping records, databases, census records, newspapers, contemporary movie guides, trade papers, archives, and asking people. In a postscript, he talks about additional information that has emerged about Murillo since he first investigated her in 2009.
