Abstract:
The present article highlights the problem of translation as creativity in the writings of French translators of the 17th century. The analysis of the traductologic texts of the classicism era allowed to establish two directions in conceptualization of the creative aspect of the translator’s work. Translators who grouped around the newly formed French Academy, in particular Perrot d’Ablancourt and supporters of translations of the genre les belles infidèles, equate the work of the translator with the work of the author and see his task in giving a new real creation of the receiving literature. However, due to the uncertainty of the limits of creative freedom of the translator, their translation practice rather compromised the very idea of creativity in translation. The second and more moderate direction, represented by translators from Port-Royal, is also oriented to the receiving language and culture. The translator is also considered a full-fledged author and must create a real work, but his freedom is limited by the text of the original, differences in language and culture, the rules of translation. The problems of translation creativity, which was discussed in the traduсtological texts of classicism, includes: role of translator and author, their rivalry, choice between literal and free translation, restriction of translator’s freedom, etc.

Abstract:
The Center for Teaching and Learning, Independent Study, and the Department of French and Italian at Brigham Young University collaborated to develop the French 202 Website to be used with the French 202 course. Currently, the French 202 Website is used with the French 202 Independent Study course and with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation focused on the French 202 Website as it is used with the traditional face-to-face course. This evaluation was conducted in conjunction with the Center for Teaching and Learning at Brigham Young University (BYU). Based on the information collected, the evaluator found that (a) faculty used the website to supplement the face-to-face French 202 course, (b) students indicated that the website appears to function according to the criteria for this evaluation, and (c) students felt that because they used the website they were better able to achieve the learning outcomes of the course.

The year 2012 was a year of great controversy surrounding autism in France. Thus it is an ideal time for an investigation of the treatment of and attitudes about autism in France, specifically in comparison with the United States. This investigation encompass several specific categories, and the Freudian psychoanalytic method against the behavior modification method, the French education system and the identification of autism, "Maternal Madness" - the connection between sexism and autism, the philosophy of humanity and the history of medical experimentation and psychiatry in France. This paper questions how is it that all these categories influence the opinions and and treatment of autism in France and what importance these attitudes have in French society.

Full text
Abstract:

To operate as an estate agent on the French Riviera as a Swede to Swedish customers, is quite different from dealing in real estate in Sweden. An example of this is that an articled clerk is required to establish the final contracts in France. Biddings on estates do not exist, as this is not allowed. Instead of this bargaining to bring down the price is often used between the buyer and seller. The estate agent is also working in closer contact with the buyer than In Sweden, as you help with other services as creating bank contacts, recommending craftsmen etc. Estate agents operate with French registration, with Swedish registration and without any registration or education at all. This has created irritation between the real estate agents on this market, as each one of them defends his way to operate, and consider himself serious.

Cox, Joanne Heather. "Challenging leadership : Mission-Shaped Presbyters in Methodist Fresh Expressions." Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/3527/.

Full text
Abstract:
The Mission-Shaped Church report by the Church of England prompted the Methodist and Church of England in the UK to respond to the dislocation being felt between the inherited model of Church, and the missiological challenges of the twenty-first century. The most significant ecumenical development arising from the initial report was the formation of the Fresh Expressions initiative, whose sole task was to release leaders and communities to found churches for the ‘unchurched.’ Examples of Anglican fresh expressions are much researched. In this thesis, I explore how the Methodist Church in Britain has responded to the leadership questions raised by contemporary culture, and do this by examining ethnographically three case studies of Methodist fresh expressions. I argue against the assumption that Methodism is incompatible with the emerging church worldview, arguing that Methodist people have much to offer to the debate. The main finding of this thesis is that leaders of fresh expressions and leadership styles often create tensions between a presbyter's self understanding of vocation within the Methodist tradition and expectations placed upon them. There are irreconcilable differences between the vision and values of a 'fresh expression', and the requirements of the local circuit or district. The discernment of specific gifts for pioneering ministries places pressure on the stationing system and on the understanding of what a presbyter is stationed to achieve. On account of the cultural assumptions of postmodern Britain, leaders are faced with the challenges of cultural accommodation, without necessarily having the tools with which to make such decisions. I argue that there is a need for fresh expressions to be denominationally distinctive before they can be distilled into something new. The thesis also reflects the costliness of research to an ordained minister embarking on practical theology. This thesis exposes leaders as people who are highly motivated but with the potential of being highly flawed. It presents difficult questions before the Methodist Church in light of the collected evidence and reflects on the difficulties faced by the whole church as it continues to respond to the challenges of mission and discipleship in Britain today.

Scanlan, Mark Christopher. "Urban Saints : an interweaving ecclesiology as a contribution to the Fresh Expressions debate." Thesis, Durham University, 2017. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/12490/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is a work of practical theology that offers a contribution to contemporary conversations about church and mission in the UK. It does this by exploring the underlying ecclesiology of Urban Saints (formerly known as The Crusaders’ Union of Bible Classes) before placing this in dialogue with Fresh Expressions. Taking an approach that uses the framework of the Four Voices of Theology developed by the Action Research Church and Society project to set up an open-ended dialogue between theological theory and practice a two-step methodology is employed. The first step draws on an historical review of Urban Saints’ practice to uncover an inherent ecclesial imagination in their work, alongside extended ethnographic case studies of two current Urban Saints groups that explore their operant ecclesiological approach. Taken together these highlight contradictions and ambiguity regarding the church. Participants however are able to appropriate the groups as part of their ecclesial life. As such the groups operate as potential ecclesial spaces. These spaces can then become part of a flexible form of church through what is interpreted as an interweaving ecclesiological approach. This reflects how the groups are used alongside various other communal Christian experiences and relationships to stimulate and support Christian faith. The second methodological step places this interweaving ecclesiology into conversation with Fresh Expressions to challenge and critique its church focused approach to mission. The argument is made that an interweaving ecclesiology utilizing potential ecclesial spaces, such as those of the Urban Saints groups, nuances the Fresh Expressions debate by resisting the drive to form mature churches as a necessary missional step. This moves the Fresh Expressions conversation on from discussions about what defines a church to allow for a focus on mission with a flexible ecclesiology not designed for stability but that can handle change.

Abstract:
The snigger point, or note of cachinnation, was invented by Ambrose Bierce in 1887. He proposed the new typographic symbol as “an improvement in punctuation,” explaining in an essay that “it is written thus ︶ and represents, as nearly as may be, a smiling mouth. It is to be appended, with the full stop, to every jocular or ironical sentence; or, without the stop, to every jocular or ironical clause of a sentence otherwise serious.” Recommended to humorless colleagues who had no trouble recognizing his sarcasm, the snigger point, or note of cachinnation, never caught on. Similar suggestions have since been advanced, independently, with different motivations. In 1899 the French writer Alcanter de Brahm earnestly proposed that a backward question mark be used in print as a point d’ironie , an idea that Alfred Jarry fervently endorsed two years later, though both the irony mark and its creator faded into obscurity shortly thereafter. And in 1967 Reader’s Digest ran a short item by the Baltimore Sunday Sun correspondent Ralph Reppert, whose Aunt Ev seasoned her family letters with the symbol –) representing “her tongue stuck in her cheek,” an idea recirculated on an ARPANET mailing list in 1979 in a proposal to counteract “the loss of meaning in this medium [due to] the lack of tone, gestures, facial expressions, etc.” The ARPANET community never embraced Aunt Ev’s innovation. But three years later a slightly different icon was rapidly and permanently adopted. The emblem was first playfully circulated on the Carnegie Mellon University bulletin board system by a computer scientist, Scott Fahlman: . . . 19-Sep-82 11:44 Scott E Fahlman :-) From: Scott E Fahlman <Fahlman at Cmu-20c> I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers: :-) Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes, given current trends. For this, use :-( . . . The :-( symbol was enthusiastically taken up together with the :-), though not in the way Fahlman intended.
