We describe the immature stages of six Ancyronyx (Spider Riffle Beetles) species from Sulawesi: A. henningi Freitag & Kodada, 2017; A. longiparamerus Freitag & Kodada, 2017; A. skalei Freitag & Kodada, 2017; A. schoedli Freitag & Kodada, 2017; A. tobada Freitag & Kodada, 2017 and A. toraja Freitag & Kodada, 2017. Abstract:

In his seminal text, The Power Elite, C. Wright Mills initially drew critical attention to U.S. state power, asserting that economic, political, and military elites flow through a revolving door, cycling in and out of positions of power. Following its publication, several social scientists began to examine the nature of the U.S. state, including individuals like G. William Domhoff and Michael Useem. One particular work by Peter Freitag examined the class composition of presidential cabinets. Freitag examined whether presidential cabinet members came from the elite corporate sphere, went into the elite corporate sphere following their tenure in office, the extent of interlocks among the Democratic and Republican Parties, and whether particular cabinet positions were more interlocked with the elite corporate sphere than others. In this article, I examine these same questions, looking at presidential cabinets between 1968 and 2018, that is, across the last half-century. In doing so, I find consistency with many of Freitag’s initial findings: most presidential cabinets remain heavily interlocked, there is little difference between Democratic and Republican cabinets, and there is a significant amount of cabinet members that come from and enter the elite corporate sphere following their time in office.

Abstract:

Wolfgang Freitag’s seminal article, ‘The indivisibility of art librarianship’, published in the Art libraries journal in 1982, occasioned a revisiting of the premises of that article for the historic joint conference of ARLIS/NA and the Visual Resources Association in St. Louis in 2001 to see how his thesis stood the test of time. The two articles that follow, one each by Wolfgang Freitag and Martha Mahard, are reflections on the original article and the course of events in the intervening twenty years. They are published jointly, here and in Art documentation.

Many articles have appeared in the Arithmetic Teacher showing teachers how to use magic squares in their classrooms. Games (Bernard 1978), pattern searching (Atkinson 1975; Freitag and Freitag 1970), drill and practice (Bright 1977). and explorations (Wills 1989) are all activities that can be designed around magic squares. This article. however, serves a different purpose: to present the teacher with an easy method for constructing magic squares to use in these applications. In addition to explaining a method that can be carried out manually, a computer program that will do all the work is included.

Os marcadores discursivos são itens que exercem um importante papel comunicativo, articulando simultaneamente valores distintos: de caráter textual, ao estabelecer ligações coesivas entre partes do texto e de caráter interpessoal, ao manter a interação entre os interlocutores e auxiliar no planejamento da fala (MARCUSCHI, 1989). O presente trabalho tem como objetivo geral descrever as funções dos marcadores discursivos olhe, olha, veja e repare em um corpus sergipano, e como objetivos específicos: identificar todas as ocorrências dos referidos marcadores na amostra Redes Sociais de Informantes Universitários de Itabaiana/SE (ARAÚJO; SANTOS; FREITAG, 2014); analisar tais ocorrências quanto às funções desempenhadas, e contribuir com a descrição e sistematização de tal categoria. Para tanto, selecionou-se 24 interações conduzidas da amostra Redes Sociais de Informantes Universitários de Itabaiana/SE (ARAÚJO; SANTOS; FREITAG, 2014), pertencente ao Banco de Dados Falares Sergipanos (FREITAG, 2013, 2017). Selecionadas as interações, realizou-se a extração de todas as ocorrências dos marcadores propostos para análise. Em seguida, tais ocorrências foram analisadas quanto ao seu valor funcional nos contextos empregados, sendo as ocorrências de olhe e olha também ouvidas para constatar usos vocalizados (ói e óia). Por fim, os dados obtidos foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva. Os resultados alcançados nesse estudo podem contribuir com os trabalhos descritivos de marcadores discursivos, mais especificamente de chamada de atenção do ouvinte, e também com estudos acerca da fala sergipana, uma vez que o corpus utilizado é uma amostra de fala de uma comunidade universitária do estado de Sergipe.

Ochotonophila flava Dickoré & Freitag sp. nov. (Caryophyllaceae – Silenoideae) is described from the mountains of Bamiyan Province, central Afghanistan. It differs from the two previously known species endemic to Afghanistan, Ochotonophila allochrusoides Gilli and O. eglandulosa Hedge & Wendelbo, by its cream to yellow petals and elliptic leaves. A key to the identification of Ochotonophila species is provided; distribution and ecology are outlined.

Abstract:

Charles Ragin's crisp set and fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (csQCA and fsQCA) are being used by increasing numbers of social scientists interested in combining analytic rigour with case-based approaches. As with all techniques that become available in easy-to-use software packages, there is a danger that QCA will come to be used in a routinised manner, with not enough attention being paid to its particular strengths and weaknesses. Users of fsQCA in particular need to be very aware of particular problems that can arise when fuzzy logic lies behind their analyses. This paper aims to increase its readers' understanding of some of these problems and of some means by which they might be alleviated. We use a critical discussion of a recent paper by Freitag and Schlicht addressing social inequality in education in Germany as our vehicle. After summarising the substantive claims of the paper, we explain some key features of QCA. We subsequently discuss two main issues, (i) limited diversity and the various ways of using counterfactual reasoning to address it, and (ii) the logical paradoxes that can arise when using fsQCA. Making different choices than Freitag and Schlicht do in respect of dealing with these two issues, we undertake some reanalysis of their data, showing that their conclusions must be treated with some caution. We end by drawing some general lessons for users of QCA.
