Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
Voice over IP (VoIP) is a methodology that refers to the delivery of multimedia and voice sessions over an Internet connection and it provides an alternative to regular voice calls using phone lines, usually referred to as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) is an API denition for browser-to-browser VoIP applications; the denition acts as a foundation for applications using voice, video, chat, and P2P le sharing in a browser environment without the need of either internal or external plugins. To allow WebRTCto make calls to non-WebRTC VoIP applications, a initiation protocol (which is not included in the WebRTC implementation looked at here, i.e., the one released by Google) is needed. One such protocol is the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), which is the standard protocol used for initialising, changing and terminating interactive sessions for multimedia today; it is particularly known for its use in VoIP applications. In this thesis, we evaluate the possibility of the creation of a WebRTC implementation using SIP (this type of implementation is referred to as WebRTC-SIP) that runs on an ARM A9 processor architecture. The evaluation is split into two steps. The first step consists of analysingand performing tests of the Linux audio drivers on an ARM platform. The tests are used to determine how a WebRTC-SIP application could affect the audio drivers on such a platform. The second step involves implementation of a WebRTC VoIP application using SIP in a browse renvironment. The measurements done on the audio drivers show that they can cope with the CPU load created by a WebRTC-SIP application. Based on this and the knowledge gained from implementing such an application for use in a browser, two theoretically possible implementation methods are presented. The first solution builds on the WebRTC-SIP application done in step two, which utilises the support of WebRTC that is built into many browsers to power the application. The second solution is a application which uses a WebRTC to SIP gateway to allow it to set up calls to non-WebRTC applications.

Abstract:
This master's thesis focuses on designing and implementing a framework that would offer basic program resources for application development on hardware platform FITkit Minerva. First part of this work focuses on designing a data channel between PC and the kit for which the USB interface was used. Next part focuses on implementing a channel between an ARM based microcontroller and FPGA Xilinx Spartan-6. That led to creating a special system inside FPGA that allows adding new HW components that communicate with the microcontroller, which can be used for implementing HW acceleration techniques. Another outcome of this work is a debugging interface that allows to program and debug FPGA using development environment Xilinx ISE without a need of the original Xilinx JTAG adapter. This was achieved by using the XVC protocol that allows to create a custom JTAG adapter that in this case was implemented in the software of the microcontroller.

Abstract:
A wireless sensor network consists of small, limited-resource embedded systems exchanging environment data and activating controls. These networks can be deployed in hostile environments to monitor wildlife habitats, implemented in factories to locate mobile equipment, and installed in home environments to optimize the use of utilities. Each of these scenarios requires network security to protect the network data. The IEEE 802.15.4 standard is designed for WSN communication, yet the standard states that it is not responsible for defining the initialization, distribution, updating, or management of network public keys. Individuals seeking to research security topics will find that there are many 802.15.4-compliant development hardware kits available to purchase. However, these kits are not easily compared to each other without first-hand experience. Further, not all available kits are suitable for research in WSN security. This thesis evaluates a broad spectrum of 802.15.4 development kits for security studies. Three promising kits are examined in detail: Crossbow MICAz, Freescale MC1321x, and the Sun SPOT. These kits are evaluated based on their hardware, software, development environment, additional libraries, additional tools, and cost. Recommendations are made to security researchers advising which kits to use depending on their design needs and priorities. Suggestions are made to each company on how to further improve their kits for security research.

Abstract:
This report is the result of a conducted Minor Field Study (MFS), to the greatestextent funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency(SIDA), in an attempt to design a system for evaluating smaller solar power systems indeveloping countries. The study was to the greater part conducted in Nairobi, Kenyain close collaboration with the University of Nairobi. The aim was to develop asystem that would use easily available components and keep the costs to a minimum, yet deliver adequate performance. The system would measure certain parameters of asolar power system and also relevant environmental data in order to evaluate theperformance of the system. Due to the specific competence of the collaboratinggroup at the University of Nairobi, a Kinetis Freescale K64-microcontroller with anARM-Cortex processor was selected as the core of the design. Components wereselected, schematics were drawn, a circuit board was designed and manufactured andsoftware was written. After 12 weeks a somewhat satisfying proof-of-concept wasreached at the end of the field study in Kenya. The project however proved howdifficult it is to go from first idea to a functional proof-of-concept during a limitedtimeframe, and also in an East-African country. The final proof-of-concept was testedat Mpala Research Centre in Kenya and despite containing some flaws proved that itwould indeed be possible to design a working system on the principles discussed inthis report. The system is open-source, so anyone may use and modify it.
