For the past 25 years, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) in Asia have been increasing. This allows for a potential expansion of exports into Asia for a variety of goods. However usually these agreements have not covered agricultural products. The most recent multilateral agreement currently includes agricultural products and agricultural trade. U.S. pork exports have been on the rise with Asian countries. Trade openness with Asian countries allows U.S. pork companies to gain a market in the region. This thesis estimates the economic impact that FTA’s and multilateral agreements have on pork exports, through the level of open markets measured by Freedom House. Using regression analysis, this research examines the determinants to U.S. pork exports, where trade openness is a major independent variable. Pork is a popular meat preference in East Asia. A regression analysis was estimated to determine the shift along the demand curve of U.S. pork exports to three East Asian countries, China, Japan, and South Korea. Overall all three countries showed their trade openness being weakly associated with the U.S. pork export demand to that particular country during the years of 1995–2013.

Full textThis thesis aims to carry out a comparative research to analyse the policies and countermeasures taken by various countries related to the trade in Rare Earth Elements (REEs). The similarity of the approaches of East Asian countries – China, Korea, and Japan – towards the African continent, and South Africa's mineral policies with the goal of national development provides the basis for the formulation of a SWOT Matrix analytical tool. As mineral resources, particularly REEs, have increased in significance with the advancement of modern technology, it will be valuable from an academic, business and political perspective to undertake such research in order to consider the optimal policy instruments that can benefit resource poor countries, such as Korea in particular, and resource rich countries such as South Africa. In Chapter 3, a number of proposals for Korea to establish rational policy systems to secure a stable REE supply chain will be put forward, followed in Chapter 4 by a SWOT Matrix analysis to provide some recommendations to South Africa for a number of policy instruments to meet its requirements of generating inclusive economic growth through establishing cooperative models.

Full textTrade has been widely accepted as an important tool in spearheading economic growth and development. In many different parts of the world, countries have alleviated poverty and economically prospered through effective trade. Despite the efforts to dismantle trade restrictions and create a common market, the problem remains that of African disintegrated markets which then lead to poor intra-African trade. There is therefore the need to use intra-African trade as an instrument that effectively serve in the attainment of rapid and sustainable social and economic development. The aim of this study is to therefore determine whether the solution to increasing intra-African trade can be found in the Tripartite FTA.

After World War II, regionalism sprang up with time. The fast development of economy and politics, made East-Asia the most glaring rising region. Under this international circumstance, plenty of regional combination movements and associations extended from regionalism became three main regionalisms. They were Asia-Pacific zone, leading by America; East-Asia zone, competing between China and Japan; and East-United zone leading by ASEAN. Influenced by the region combination, the world economy is developing toward the three tops: East-Asia, North America, and Europe. East-Asia zone, as one of the fastest region on growing up economy and development, was at the bottom of regional economic cooperation trend comparing to Europe and North America. The whys and the wherefores, besides economic problems, the causes were also the innovation movements of democracy, the disordered security problems, and the trend of future regional combination. Under the tendency of regional economic combination, the ASEAN not only speed up the inner liberalization, but also signed free-trade agreements at multiple channels with near East-Asia countries. These methods displayed that ASEAN was no longer an inattentive or unsanctioned neighboring-country organization. It became a regional economic one with enormous market and commercial possibilities. While processing of combination in East-Asia, the ASEAN played the leader all along. However, there were still many varieties on combination. Facing the globalization of economy and the unity of economic regionalism, the East-Asia had succeeded in mountains of crisis and trials. The present East-Asia was moving toward economy recovery, but the economy structure and the reformation in every country were just beginning. In order the keep the state stably, arduous efforts and price would be essential.
